Daily Cartoon Sep 17

Another day, another daily! With a weekend off before we dive into to the flyaway third act, let's check out what's going on in the world!

Woz Goin' On?

How do you solve a problem like Korea?: After last year's grand prix was only just about finished in time, Korea are confident that 2011 will be a much better event. The track is unique in that it's a centrepiece for a modern city development that will rise over the next few years, changing the track from a dirty swamp circuit to a sparkly futuristic one. I have seen the official documentation and can confirm the plans for the Yeongam circuit, looking forward:

  • 2014: Commercial Hub of city complete
  • 2016: Parks and lake land complete; many apartments available
  • 2017: Many skyscrapers loom over city, which is now a beacon of commerce
  • 2018: 90% of city complete, Yeongam has a huge international population
  • 2019: Bernie raises circuit fees to GDP of Spain
  • 2020: Locals complain about the circuit being a financial blight and annual inconvenience
  • 2022: Yeongam dropped from F1 calendar
  • 2030: Yeongam residents and workers forget about F1 and wonder why all the city roads are so ridiculously twisty and stupid
  • 2035: Hey, why don't we host an F1 race?

Live the 2011 season in your living room!: Codemaster's latest F1 game will be out by the end of the month and now it's more realistic than ever. Here's what F1 2011 has in store:

  • Safety Car: At last, after years of pleading from fans, the safety car is available in game. This means you can now spend portions of your game time not racing. Instead you'll have to drive slowly for a few minutes, which sounds incredibly exciting!
  • Live the Championship: If you don't play as Vettel, you cannot win.
  • Legal Eagle: The action doesn't stop once the race is over: head straight to the courts to fight over the rights to the 'Lotus' name; argue with the stewards over your exhaust technology; argue with your boss when you're replaced for a race by Marcus Winklehock. In fact, 47% of the game will be LA Noire style conversational scenes.
  • Run from Brundle: As you wait on the grid, you must avoid being caught up by Martin Brundle on his grid walk. Hide behind engineers, throw C-list celebrities in his path, pretend to need the loo - just don't get caught!

Vettel insists the title fight is now over yet: All his competitors have accepted defeat, but Sebastian Vettel says that the everything is still up for grabs. In a recently press conference he said, 'Oh come on, guys! Don't leave! Play with me! I'll tie one hand behind my back. OK, OK, two hands! No? I'll disable my KERS! I'll start from the pitlane. Anything! Don't leave! ... aw.'

No glow-in-the-dark Pirellis: Last year, Bridgestone made their tyre-type markings glow in the dark for the night race in Singapore, but Pirelli have no such intentions. Among many reasons, the most obvious that springs to mind is: it's not dark.

Hahahah. It does sound strange people complaining about no SC in games. :)

I'm trying to share that playlist via Ping, but Ping is 'experiencing technical difficulties' at the mo, so I have to keep trying. That's annoying.

Probably the Yamamoto. Everyone asks: Just... why?

Great daily Stuart but surely somewhere it should have said

Yeongam residents complaints about the noise result in motor racing being banned in the city

I was going to say Liuzzi, but as far as I know it hasn't ruined 3 other things on iTunes...yet.

I think Stuart should send that cartoon to Derek Daly and tell him to ignore it for two days before he looks at it

Let's go with that for now. :)

I was able to sign in to Ping, finally. I had published the playlist before that. Now I don't know how to find it. I've tried dragging it into the 'add songs' list, looking at my recent activity, and I don't know what else to try.

That must be horrendous. A plane hitting a grandstand at racing speeds???

I imagine the body count is only going to get higher

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 01:11

didn't hit the grandstand (there are videos on youtube).

Never come across that one either.

For a first serious driving manual it would be hard to beat Bob Bondurant's book

Watching the GT1 race from Beijing - their gravel traps look really, really, really deep.

    That's something at least.

long distance shot so hard to say, looks like a red bull air race shaped plane that hit the ground near a grandstand.

    P51 is a WWII fighter

ah, okay. seems to be some kind of looped race and one pilot gets off line.

citizen journalism is pretty damn awesome though. amateur shots told me way more than 20 written news sources including CNN.

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 01:23

It's still early. Would we want solid reporting or nonsense that might end up being retracted - especially where multiple deaths have occurred. Personally, I'd much rather the latter.

  • Mr C17/09/2011 at 01:26

NBC and CBS running with headline "plane crashes into stands", video doesn't seem to show any stands.

  • Alison17/09/2011 at 01:28

Did a pilot recently die in an airshow here?

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 01:28

Haven't seen any video, so I can't possibly comment. In saying that, CNN and NBC are probably not the most responsible outlets for news. I normally put them in the Sky News / Fox News / ABC basket for garbage reporting.

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 01:29

Red Arrows pilot died returning to the airport after the air show

I tend to think they (and ABC) are marginally better than Fox, and CNN Int'l is better than CNN US.

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 01:29

Slightly impressed at the speed of availability, not so much of the upload speed but that it was searchable already.

I've not watched it and don't plan to.

  • Pat W17/09/2011 at 01:33

I'd forgotten that it was the anniversary of Colin McRae's accident this week, and actually didn't know it was the same date as Zanardi's a few years before.

Anyway I really liked the little tribute the Race of Champions put together, which I was lucky enough to see live (Alister giving it the full beans in the Impreza).

  • Amy17/09/2011 at 05:23

this is the first time I've ever had someone texting me from a roger press conference. Hope it doesn't take too long though, i need to go shopping!

  • Amy17/09/2011 at 05:26

    kill.me.

i had to go early, my friend had to pick up her accreditation!

  • RubberGoat17/09/2011 at 08:38

Hahahah. It does sound strange people complaining about no SC in games. :)

I only ever liked it in NASCAR Racing 2003 because it meant you had to think about Strategy :)

Your dailies are so entertaining and creative, Stuart. Love it.

Yeah great stuff yet again :D

  • RubberGoat17/09/2011 at 08:40

oh, looks like it's been updated to be more 'descriptive'. Be warned, and Mr C, you can delete that if you see fit. Sorry. The last thing I want to add to this week is more awful stuff. :(

It's fine by me as long as you warn us first. I stopped reading as it's too gory. Not sure I need to see that sort of video though...

  • That'll be the Day17/09/2011 at 09:00

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - Which well-loved former British F1 driver, who secured 16 victories to his name, was born on this day?

  • Lukeh17/09/2011 at 10:58

    How are you all?

  • Pat W17/09/2011 at 11:36

    How are you all?

    Very good thanks. :)

  • Pat W17/09/2011 at 11:38

Thanks to Jackie and Mav who couldn't make use of some courtesy tickets, I am going to Goodwood Revival tomorrow. :)

I'm going to bring my mum, which could be a good idea or a bad one. She's never been to a race and loves vintage things, and GR has loads of that outside of the racing.

  • Lukeh17/09/2011 at 11:40

Stepdad might have something. Trying to find a way to get him along too with a spare ticket from ebay. I know they'd both love it. Was half tempted to give them the tickets and not go myself but I suspect Johnnie Walker expect blog promo in return.

You live in the UK. The sun is out, so it is summer. Temperature has nothing to do with it. If the season was called "Temper" then everyone would be out screaming at the top of their lungs, As the saying goes, it is called "Mad Dogs and Englishmen", so you can separate the two... as much as Welsh, Irish and Scots and everyone else in the Commonwealth begs to differ.... :P

    Kimi to Williams? Interesting idea

    joesaward.wordpre…lliams-and-sutil/

    Was reading that just now!

Interesting idea, in theory. But F1 comebacks rarely work out anything like you expect them to - just ask Michael. Also, I don't think Kimi and Frank would get along very well, for a lot of reasons. Kimi's the kind of guy you need to pay some attention to so he'd do well. Williams has never really been known for that TLC - and that may cause clashes later on.

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 20:43

sounds a bit like JV to BAR, no? why would he bother.

This is the poor man's version of that - literally; Williams don't have a lot of money to pay Kimi with.

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 20:45

    (....unless they mean replacing pastor)

Joe already said they won't, sadly.

But he does give the Sutil-to-Williams idea a good boost.

Would be shame for Rubens to fall one short of 20 seasons, and miss out on a Williams-Renault.

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 20:45

sounds a bit like JV to BAR, no? why would he bother.

Because the alternatives are to be a second rate rally driver, do 99 NASCAR races per season or float around aimlessly.

He has seen life away from F1 and getting back into it may appeal

  • Lukeh17/09/2011 at 20:46

Would be shame for Rubens to fall one short of 20 seasons, and miss out on a Williams-Renault.

Too few truly competitive seats, and Citroen had a megastar (in Sebastien Ogier) on its hands it was never going to give up for Kimi.

The likes of Ogier, Ott Tannak, Martin Prokop, Aaron Burkart might though, not forgetting the return of some manufacturers to WRC.

Too few truly competitive seats, and Citroen had a megastar (in Sebastien Ogier) on its hands it was never going to give up for Kimi.

Also, in terms of rallying Ogier is simply far better than Kimi -- and it looks like Citroen have already lost Ogier.

    *Googles*

Dang. I do find it odd that Citroen would pay him so much, only to make him play second fiddle to Loeb. I do wonder how tight that contract is, though - I'm not sure Citroen will let him go so easy.

That said, didn't Ogier see the signs? For all of Citroen's wrangling, it was Loeb himself telling Ogier to stay away and go to Ford. Perhaps he should've listened the first time...

Loeb has just signed for two more years, when he was originally to retire at the end of this year.

That said, didn't Ogier see the signs? For all of Citroen's wrangling, it was Loeb himself telling Ogier to stay away and go to Ford. Perhaps he should've listened the first time.

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 21:08

point being, kimi was a name people had heard of, why didn't he sell rally to f1 fans?

Because i don't think he was really interested in doing that. And Citroen never really pushed Kimi on it, either, given that Loeb was (and is) the center of their world.

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:08

I can't think of any time (off the top of my head) when that's ever worked in motor racing. Even when Mansell went to IndyCar, no one suddenly started following it over here.

i followed montoya to nascar and i'll be following danica to nascar.

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 21:09

I wonder what came first, this:

Loeb has just signed for two more years, when he was originally to retire at the end of this year.

    or this:

Loeb and Ogier have had something of a falling out this year by all accounts.

I suspect one caused the other here.

  • Mr C17/09/2011 at 21:09

Because i don't think he was really interested in doing that. And Citroen never really pushed Kimi on it, either, given that Loeb was (and is) the center of their world.

    rally's loss i guess.

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 21:10

Kimi put no effort into selling anything to anyone. He was only interested in what he was doing with no interest in building anything

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:10

i followed montoya to nascar and i'll be following danica to nascar.

Hell, even I didn't follow JPM to NASCAR -- and Danica, well, it was nice knowing her

    ;)

I wonder what came first, this:

The cracks started appearing last year

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:11

Kimi put no effort into selling anything to anyone. He was only interested in what he was doing with no interest in building anything

Why should he though - that's not his job. Jean Todt has done more for WRC this year alone than Kimi has since he started rallying.

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 21:11

    rally's loss i guess.

The WRC should have used him a lot more

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 21:11

Which makes me worry as to whether or not he'd be a good fit with Williams. They need Kimi to keep sponsors happy just as well as driving fast. And I'm not sure Kimi would ever be willing to do that kind of legwork.

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 21:12

The cracks started appearing last year

There's only room in Citroen's world for one Sebastien, apparently. :D

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 21:13

    No reason Kimi should

Todt has a long job in front of him to get it back where it was

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:13

Pretty much. Can you imagine the meetings when they had to decide team tactics -- who goes on gravel first, etc...?

I think he fits much better in an F1 team than in rallying

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:15

Todt has a long job in front of him to get it back where it was

I think the biggest priority for Todt must be to sort out some of the awful TV deals the WRC finds itself in.

It doesn't matter who's in it if no one can watch it.

Indeed. It was probably too much. That said, have Citroen made the right call here? Loeb can't win forever, and Ogier will keep getting better.

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 21:17

It doesn't matter who's in it if no one can watch it.

Like half of F1 next year. You would think the FIA would have learned enough from the WRC to put clauses in the F1 commercial rights contract to prevent this happeneing

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:17

Indeed. It was probably too much. That said, have Citroen made the right call here? Loeb can't win forever, and Ogier will keep getting better.

Bigger question is who makes way at Ford? If Ogier does confirm the move then that would be a massive shift in the order.

From what I read, Hirvonen's contract expires at the end of this year? VW are still in need of a team leader. Although all things considered, I'd rather let go of Latvala.

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:23

I dunno. Hirvonen has been good, but not championship good (although he came so close in 2009), but Latvala has something.

His luck this year (all bad) has been shocking. It's like a different part of the car breaks at every rally.

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 21:23

When was the last time the commercial rights contract was up for review, though? I don't think Todt's had a chance to right Mosley's wrongs there.

Not sure Mosley would have even looked it. He was so obsessed with F1, he left many of the other categories to look after themselves - to their own detriment mostly.

Kinda like Mark Webber? :D That said, I think both drivers are close enough to equal on ability, so perhaps Ford should just do what's more convenient.

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 21:25

I'm talking about Steven's point on the F1 contract. :) But yes, Todt is doing a lot more for WRC than Max did - it's Todt's first love, after all.

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 21:26

When was the last time the commercial rights contract was up for review, though? I don't think Todt's had a chance to right Mosley's wrongs there.

Max's whole pitch for his vote of confidence was that he was the only person who could re-negotiate the commercial rights contract. One the vote pass he forgot about it. So Todt inherited the mandate to do it.

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 21:26

Not sure Mosley would have even looked it. He was so obsessed with F1, he left many of the other categories to look after themselves - to their own detriment mostly.

Max trashed the WRC, WEC etc etc

Not even like Webber - worse actually. Parts that have no relation to eachother, or parts that would normally not be stressed under rally conditions, seem to be failing once and then never again.

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:28

Max trashed the WRC, WEC etc etc

The junior formulae all failed under Max too. Look at what happened to F3000, F3, etc under his tenure.

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 21:28

Max's whole pitch for his vote of confidence was that he was the only person who could re-negotiate the commercial rights contract. One the vote pass he forgot about it. So Todt inherited the mandate to do it.

But don't such contracts normally have set review periods, though? Like once every x years or somesuch?

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 21:28

The junior formulae all failed under Max too. Look at what happened to F3000, F3, etc under his tenure.

And the only successful junior ones have been those supported by Renault (GP2, WSR).

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:29

But don't such contracts normally have set review periods, though? Like once every x years or somesuch?

Most are reviewed yearly and options for extensions are taken at those points; however the status of a sport at any particular time can determine its attractiveness - or otherwise - to a TV station.

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 21:29

But don't such contracts normally have set review periods, though? Like once every x years or somesuch?

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:29

    GP2 was also a Bernie/Flavio project.

  • Steven Roy17/09/2011 at 21:30

But don't such contracts normally have set review periods, though? Like once every x years or somesuch?

They also don't generally last for a hundred years and the rights are not just offered to one buyer

  • Journeyer17/09/2011 at 21:30

And the only successful junior ones have been those supported by Renault (GP2, WSR).

Bernie/Flavio/Renault, I'd say. In any case, was Max involved there?

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/09/2011 at 21:31

Bernie/Flavio/Renault, I'd say. In any case, was Max involved there?

He would have had to facilitate the technical / safety aspects in some way, but the shape of the GP weekend is all Bernie.

Indeed. In any case, Jake's last blog post is a very curious one. He deliberately mentioned the Sky bit at the end to seemingly allow commenters to post about it 'on topic'. And he's been mentioning the audience numbers a lot too - seemingly as if to make a point.

Before I sign off, I'm sure that there will be plenty of people reading this who are keen to know about our plans for the 2012 F1 coverage.

As soon as there is something concrete to announce, I know that the BBC will do that. However, I can tell you I am committed to helping the BBC make its F1 coverage next year as compelling as it has been for the last three years.

And thanks for your continued loyalty - all 5.8m of you who watched the race with us on Sunday.

it will boil down to what arrangement the BBC has for the f1 coverage. i can easily see them deciding to cover it from London so Jake can present it. but if they opt to keep going abroad, i do see Jake missing more than 1 race.
