Hello there, it's Sunday and it's not a race day, so what are you doing with your hours? I know we have people out and about, travelling. Pat is on his way to the Goodwood Revival, and Amy is in Sydney watching some tennis. Meanwhile, here at Sidepodcast, we're locked away in the office thinking, plotting, planning and getting creative. Oh, and we'll be recording the Debrief soon, promise.
What else has been going on in the world? HRT confirmed the least surprising news of all time, by announcing Narain Karthikeyan for the Indian GP. He'll also be turning up in a cockpit near you at Singapore for one of the Free Practice sessions just to get his eye in. That led to plenty of rather dubious headlines, as RG noticed.
The 'Karthikeyan returns to HRT cockpit in Singapore' title in my e-mail is slightly misleading...
In non-F1 bits and pieces, yesterday was another episode of Doctor Who, and I've blogged my thoughts here, while Lukeh has his here. Just two episodes left of this series, blimey time flies.
Finally, I'll just give a quick mention to my not-quite-so-new-now website which is a dedicated space for all things author-y. The piece about reading without a Kindle, also available here on Sidepodcast, is worth another look if you've ever been in two minds about the ebook world.
Let's start Sunday with a smile

:)
Not as funny as Sutil running, if you can call it that
Thanks for doing the daily for me! :)
*christine.
Goodness I miss my mac
Amazing how lax the gridwalks used to be

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy7uk7MOeF4&feature=related
hehe. hey lou.
love the HRT email subject too. optimism much.
Mr c, I was meaning to ask you, do you think pay as you go dongles are worth the money?
Maybe MiFi would suit you better, hooking up your phone too when needed
dongles, no. mifi, yes. because it works with ipods and ipads:
http://www.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/MiFi
works everywhere except the coal hole :)
but I have unlimited internet on my phone so that's no issue for me...
I bought an unlocked one on Amazon. For a little bit extra it gives you a choice of all the carriers in the UK and you can buy a SIM when you travel abroad too
I got full bars of 3G in there tonight. I wonder if upstairs is a blackspot. [Probably can't cope with 12+ online devices in one tiny location]
ahh, could be.
Or they've made coverage better in the area, Either way, it was good to see
Speaking of which, any potential for a SPC meet-up in the coming months. It shall be Christmas soon, y'know
;)
xmas beer sounds like a good plan. snow permitting.
If you build it, they will come
...and wind and rain and ice
:D
i really can't afford 80 pound.. and don't use my ipod on the internet anyway. The thing is this is only a tempers solution to the issue that we have no internet here and I may need it for work next week and the following few weeks. We should be getting internet in no more than a month... stupid landlord.
A month..? How on Earth does it take so long in this day and age?
Then it's probably your best option [other than hacking your neighbours' WiFi ;)]
Dongles need drivers, therefore they are BAD!
ahh, no idea then. haven't used a dongle for years and the drivers on the mac sucked. soz.
technicalities... we pay a monthly rent for everything, but no internet is set up. Apparently someone may be coming to check the house next week, and then the landlord will say if he'll count it as in our rent too... and we don't want to buy internet if it could be part of our contract.
Gosh I wish moving was simple
#affinty
A bit late I know, but was Vettel's second stop last week the quickest in F1 history (and the first under three seconds)?
It came up as 2.9 seconds on screen anyway.
Can you share from phone to computer? which phone is it?
they're all locked :(
Tethering is an option, though not a free one
oh so it'll hurt my mac if I get one? I can't cope with so little internet in my life!
You won't hurt it, just do some research on the forums first
htc desire. Ive done it before but for some reason it won't let me here. Maybe I don't get enough 3G signal?
Probably not :)
They can be a pain to set up and maintain, but most of the time they are ok. The carriers always seem to try to do funky unnecessary things that cause problems. If they just used the built in drivers in Mac OS X, there'd be much less pain :)
speedtest.net
Let us know the results
I wish I understood what most of that meant but if its gonna be complicated ill just avoid it. I'm having enough trouble sorting out my stupid room and putting a desk together.
on my phone? Cool shall try.
I didn't mean to scare you. For 9 out of 10 people, they just work without drama. If you do get one, just ask for help here if something goes wrong
Jeremy, hopefully I have a simple question that I was unable to figure out last night. I want to upload a playlist I have in my iTunes to Ping. How do I do that? Do I need to individually select each song or can I upload it as one playlist?
Ummm... I'll have to get back to you... I don't really use it.... :)
Jeremy = help desk :-)
I'd love to not use it, to be honest. What's a better way to share playlists with people?
Jeremy = better get to work :)
On a Sunday :(
Not sure anyone does
hehe thank youuu!!
Boooooo
I know! Sorry! It feels like we're all at dinner with a doctor asking about our ailments!
Occupational hazard?
I'll try not to do this too much, Jeremy. :)
well given the fact the app is downloading super slowly I'm gonna say its probably my 3G. I don't get 3G signal in many parts of this house except, thankfully, my room :)
I honestly don't mind! I'm just not here as much as I'd like.
You have my email and I'm on Facebook. I don't check social media stuff very often though because my bosses prefer to communicate in emails :)
Never mind, I just deleted mine.
Thanks anyway. :)
Aw, thanks. I don't really do Facebook, so an email would work, but no worries.
Don't work too much on a Sunday, it's against all that right and good. :)
If only everyone thought like that
yeah, no kidding. I have things to do tomorrow for work, also.
I'm in denial because I have been sneezing all day like crazy and I can't breathe through my nose. Mold allergens are high right now. I hate them.
You need to find a way for your allergies to take a holiday while you stay at home chillin'
hmm.... I've seen some pretty low airfares to Pittsburgh lately....
But somewhere nice where they may want to stay and settle down
I know they have a nice airport there, but I'm not sure they'd consider that a holiday...but it's supposed to be an up and coming area for young professionals. I wonder if my allergies are yuppies?
They seem annoying enough, so maybe
Mold loves Florida, and I can't stand it, so I'll send them there.
Sounds good, they'll love the party scene on Miami Beach
:D
Oh dear....
The old IndyCar came out a solid three seconds slower than the current Formula Nippon's at Motegi. Thankfully, we'll be shot of that car very soon.
they're not racing nippons though?
No, just active comparison's being made throughout the event. The conditions are slightly different to last week (when the Nippon's ran), but not 3 seconds different.
Considering the cars have similar powerplants too, it's not a good look. I was listening to an interview with Wheldon a few days ago - he was raving about the new car and how it handles like an actual racing car and not a block of wood.
odd thing to compare. surely they're quite a bit slower than an f1 car, but that doesn't stop them.
The reason folks are interested is because few other comparable series' ever run on the Motegi road course.
It's as close to a back-to-back they can get. I'd dread to think how much quick a GP2 car would be.
but... they're not racing them either? doesn't make any sense to me.
kinda like this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sFGXh-zthM
fun i guess, but no-one is going to quit watching DTM because it got beat by an f1 car. are they?
It's one of those thing's where no one has ever quite known how poor these cars are - remembering too that they are just clobbered together oval cars; however it's still rather unlikely that they wanted to seen as slower than a Nippon machine.
That's really not what I'm getting at.
i would say indycar has more problems than what their cars top speeds are. i mean, that isn't why i stopped watching. top speed isn't why danica is going to nascar either (i'm guessing).
breaking wilson's back because he's a bit tall is a good reason to change the car though.
I doubt they wanted to be shown as that much slower than a second-rate junior formula.
A big point.
i'm betting f-nippon couldn't care less :)
I'd think they might actually be (very) quietly pleased.
:)
maybe they could make an aero kit ;)
They're still annoyed at being turned down, so no aero kit for a while yet.
who are?
I probably should have mentioned that. The Nippon's are running a more primitive version of what Swift offered IndyCar; however with Swift, it would have remained a spec-series.
who knew?!
The series are well aware of it. The car Nippon use is quite innovative in that it dampens the dirty air coming out of the rear of the car making following through corners much easier.
ooooh, kinda makes sense why there's a comparison.
Worth a quick look though. What they offered IndyCar was a very interesting concept.
http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:VnxA01smozMJ:www.swiftengineering.com/images/news/press_releases/2-8-10/SWIFT-INDYCAR-ANNOUNCEMENT-FEB2010.pdf+Swift+017.n&hl=en&gl=uk&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgXG53pJCQ7c8cMES5ErKcOiYvgWqZEL1SEOSXcYD2HaaNvkAsLN8MHLfdH7jVn2OgmQclOmObBAl0BFfLlg5v6b6cxBSSyr7M_Q-vOiAeDOR1THjEWEQJcvaXp5uHR39mXItyS&sig=AHIEtbSamZ2gG5GZoIEBMITxZypcw3nTlA&pli=1
i remember it.
I'm not staying up for the Motegi race though. 5am is not an option tonight. Besides Sky are airing it at 9am.
eek! i may still be up. no huge desire to tune in, sadly.
Motegi race was... interesting, in spots. Won't say any more as many will watch the 9am show. Enjoy!
Morning everyone
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
Here are two questions for That'll be the Day
well light ruined the end of the tennis so I'll find out who wins on tv tomorrow. But i did get to listen to Roger's press conference in the taxi to the airport so that was very cool. My friend got to ask him the last question of the day :D
how awesome!
Roger... Have you heard about Sidepodcast.com?
Awesome Moto2 race...
I love F1, but those riders are incredible!
Here's my new minimum blog. I don't forget my old one, but I wanted to have one in english :)
I'll see what we do. http://socalledinfinity.wordpress.com
not quite, more "Roger, there is a rumour that you're changing your racquet, can you confirm that?" he gives really detailed answers rather than just saying yes or no. Interviewers dream.
"Roger, Is this a spade?" :)
That's great! I remember when I was predictiong that Bourdias would be absolutly useless in F1 as the indycars where seven seconds a lap slower than the F1 cars at Gilles Vileneuve durning the few years where both series ran at Montreal.
The worse part was that there was a three to four second gap from the worst F1 car at the time (may have been Super Aguri) to Bourdais indycar car pole time.... :p
That'll be the Day does not answer questions, only poses them :)
Good afternoon everyone :)
hehe!
Good Afternoon!
Unfortunatly I am going to miss the show today, Is there a replay facility?
Replays have been a bit tricky. I'm working on it is the official answer I think :)
Whilst appreciating that you are quite busy these days, can you think about a version that is suitable for a mobile device [for the future]. Even audio only would be fine
Lovely coffee grown in India, who knew!
No worries, have a good show :)
I have not only thought about it, I know what the solution is, but carving out 3 hours to broadcast, plus around 3 hours to select the music is sadly about as much as I can do these days :(
I will try and sort it :)
Might be the poppy (opium) grown in the next-door country that gives it its flavour there.... :P

I've just found a great, great music video on YouTube, from Iz Kamakawiwo. Somewhere over the rainbow. A classic, but a great song.
Here it is the link: http://socalledinfinity.wordpress.com/2011/09/18/somewhere-over-the-rainbow-by-iz-kamakawiwo/
Enjoy this video about McLaren's steering-wheels: http://socalledinfinity.wordpress.com/2011/09/18/99/
Evening folks
How is everyone this evening?
Fine thanks.
What about you?
Evening.
{Checks his own pulse}
Well, I am please to say that reports of my immediate demise have been greatly exaggerated...
Not too bad thanks. Just catching up with last night's Doctor Who
:)
:D
A week late and a pound short...

Heikki and Lewis drumming. Hadn't seen this before
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVE9n0MnUOU&feature=feedrec_grec_index
Hehehe
This is really funny :)
http://youtu.be/6enbuVBuvO8
Love 0:10
i recall norbert haug having a go too.
I just can't imagine that even if I can picture him as a drummer in jazz band
wow! Heikki was awesome!
Heikki drums a lot - something he picked up from a Finnish heavy metal band I believe.
can't find the video anymore, but he looked like this: http://77.240.18.21/~admin42/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5323&start=15
I know he's a big Nightwish fan but I didn't realise he was that good at drumming himself. Awesome.
There are some videos on youtube where he jams with Nightwish
Quite a good episode of Who - creepypeeps
:)
I think I'll go to the World Series by Renault race in Barcelona, which will be celebrated between the 8-9 of october.
10 € the paddock ticket. And Kubica will be there!
€10??? Free surely, as with every other event.
I think the general ticket is free, but if you want to enter the paddock you have to pay 10€
Paddock pass is free at every other event.
It seems is different in Montmelo :|
Hmmm - that is very odd. Where did you see €10?
A friend of mine told me it was like this.
I'll phone the circuit to be sure.
World Series site says nothing about any charge.
The Circuit the Catalunya is a little bit special in this kind of cases.
For example. The F1 tests tickets are more expensive than usual.
But the World Series mandate is free access across the board and if the World Series don't charge, then something is not quite right with the circuit.
I'd be surprised - the track is being more than compensated by Renault.
We'll see...
Well, its time to go.
Good night! :)
Night Marti
Well, I think it is about time I decided to mow the front grass....
I always thought attendance was free but there was a small fee for the paddock?
I havent been, but im sure other people have told me the same about silverstone?
I just d/l'd the ticket - free pit/paddock at Catalunya. Free everywhere according to the site at least
Oh and the WS paddock for silverstone has always been free too
Hi guys...
Away on business but just have a few mins to post about Kimi to Williams (what else?)...
Obviously I hope he does go to Williams...
The current mich better racing will suit him very well and with a Renault engine the Williams may well be a different proposition...
I think Kimi has missed F1 (although not the media) and the time away may have focussed him on what he wants rather than what the guys around him tell him he wants....
The Rubens Williams relationship has not been particularly productive and the only reason anyone would want Sutil is for his money and Williams already have someone with money....
So it will be down to whether Kimi wants to do it and also... money...
Perhaps Frank will give him share options!?!....
Anyway if he does go back I'll be heading to a few more races next year....
(Oh and quite a few F1 fans did follow the Kimster rallying. I'd never have visited Sweden, Finland or Jordan if he hadn't gone rallying)...
I thought that may make you happy
You are obviously a very observant guy....
But I have had these moments before...
And I would still have loved him back at McLaren in 2010...
Really don't accept this theory. Williams had a Cosworth engine last year and weren't anywhere near this bad - they even had a pole position. The problem is much more than simply the engine.
He should have gone there. Kimi and Lewis would be great to watch
Not many trees in Jordan.. or are we talking Jordans in trees?....
Mostly dust, rocks and short stubby brush...
(No offense of course)...
That would have been well awesome.
They were pretty bad last year.... and had mega problems with the way the power was laid down with the Cosworth power train I believe...
I am a great fan of the Hulk but had to admit that his pole flattered the car and was the result of unusual circumstances....
Agree. It still seems to be accepted that the Renault is the least powerful engine of the four.
I agree
Power isn't everything...
Just ask Red Bull....
Same with this year I believe. The problems of old do not seem to be fully fixed.
Yeah, well, many years ago, I used to be able to jump up and pull myself into that hammock that I set up under the maple tree.....
Amazing how those things grow... Now I have to climb up an extension ladder....
My point exactly.
The first 1/3 of the year, sure, but then they consistently got point finish positions, Q3 etc. A lot better than this year anyways
I actually expect him to turn up at Le Mans next year, not F1. (Or possibly MotoGP :-) )
Le Mans with Jaguar -- who recently announced some sort of tech deal with Williams, didn't they?
If power was everything then that Williams BMW should have ruled! What a joke that was....
They won races at a time dominated by the Scheuy / Ferrari behometh
Well at least I'd get to see a lot of new tracks on that basis...
Red Bull aren't winning simply because of the engine, just ask Renault and Lotus.
I actually think the Renault engine has closed the gap a lot this year
I get the impression their acceleration curve is a lot more aggressive this year
Didn't they have permission to do a little fiddling with the Renault engine?!?...
Nope - just all the bits around it.
If power was everything then that Williams BMW should have ruled! What a joke that was....
They won races at a time dominated by the Scheuy / Ferrari behometh
That's my point exactly. The wou the odd race. Schuie / Ferrari was winning everything, or at least to the point where you did not want to bet against schuie not winning the race.
Their problem is that they employed a flipping genius to design that beast of a car :)
it's just a kers deal though, so not sure why that would mean a factory tour of williams
they've started doing the stuff that mercedes and ferrari had already been doing - catching up was inevitable
Don't disagree but the Renault engine is pretty good too...
There a whole lot more to it than that. Specifically, Ferrari's advantageous Bridgestone's played a decisive part in Schuey's success
Jaguar coming back to Le Mans still has some secrets about. Who knows how extensive the deal may actually be at this stage?
Don't forget the endless testing on their two private tracks too...
That too.
I think we shouldn't rule out the possibility Adrian Newey is run on a Renault engine too
williams say they want to extend the deal and be Jaguar's motorsport arm - but thy're not at the moment
Debrief outtake preview ping sort of thing: http://sidepodcast.posterous.com/f1-debrief-outtake-in-which-mr-c-reduces-chri
Ooh trailers! :)
Awwww!
Nasty Mr C. I was expecting tears as in 'dead like ringo starr' tears ;)
Interesting idea...
Mr Newey isn't actually human... but an amazing cyborg sent back from the future...
That was why Ferrari wanted him.... and Ron... of course....
Shocking
If that is the intro what is the show like?
Ouch!!!! Forgot to listern to Giggles radio live and taking it out on Christine, mr. C?
Maybe come up with a quick intro and bin this section?
:)
I look forward to the intro actually being 'Welcome to a debrief, this week, stff happens, and stuff"
that should cost a whole heap of milky bars ;-)
mr. C's in the doghouse again, that's for sure....
don't know what got into me.
didn't mean any of it honest.
Hmmm....
Hmmmmmmmm.....
You need to go shopping...
can't imagine anything christine would want less than a trip to a race.
Christine cannot be plied with gifts. ;) (ok, maybe milky bars...)
a trip to a race where it pours it down for 4 hours?
To the travel agencies. Montreal in June after the GP is nice....
Mr C "does a Hirvonen"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLsO-GG5Geo
:)
They want to be home. Out is bad, mostly.
absolutely. this is what christine wants most in the world: http://www.endlesspools.co.uk/
but i'm not in that much trouble ;)
oh, I had a chance to use on of those! They're awesome!
:)
Noo, what I want most in the world is a baby panda. But I would settle for an endless pool.
a pool with an end will suffice?
Now the Otters, Marmots and Pandas are extremely disappointed.... :-(
more expensive than an endless pool.
Right, I'm off folks. Sleep is needed.
G'night
"Hmmm, the Empress does not seem to share in your optimistic appraisal of the situtation, Commander"
Want want want! Nick are you watching??
I could keep my ducks in there ;)
Great, mr. C now you are getting Nick in trouble too!
Mmmmmm, it is amazing how the words "Peking" and "Duck" go together....
There we go Mr C....
Cheap get out for you...
i'll get right onto that then ;)
Hello
Hi Pat, good day at Goodwood?
Hah! Nick can manage that on his own...
Hey, Pat! Pull up a chair..... If you are looking for mr. C, he is out back in the doghouse, again, for this outburst, titled Exhibit "A".
Exhibit A:
sidepodcast.poste…mr-c-reduces-chri
Bah! Stupid link did not work. Try this.
http://sidepodcast.posterous.com/f1-debrief-outtake-in-which-mr-c-reduces-chri
Very good thanks. A completely different event to the Festival, yet some familiarity. Great to see the classic Lotuses and BRMs racing even if they seemed really slow in the wet (it did mean some pretty cool powerslides though).
Absolutely pelted it down halfway through the 60s GT race, it had to be cut short. I liked those cars a lot.
Also saw a flight of ten Spitfires, very rare occurrence.
I saw those Lotuses in Rachel Clarke's pics and thought of Dario, predictably. :)
ooh, sounds awesome.
Ten??? I had no idea that there were that many still flying
Triumph or Supermarine Spitfires, Pat ?
I think it was 9 Supermarine.
:)
We didn't do very well on driver-spotting because we didn't know where the drivers were located until very late on, and had gone for a walk around the circuit and the trade stands.
That's an outburst?
Neither did I, and was amazed when they announced it. And they took off almost over our heads. There was supposed to be an 11th but the rain showers kept it away. We were lucky actually, the skies cleared just in time for the display, then clouded over again after it finished. Low cloud cover.
I sympathize that you were Lou-less. :)
I would love to see that many Spitfires flying together.I guess that means the Revival IS on my list after all
Mr Christian Bale?
haha
:O :O :O
I was with Mum so had to not be watching cars all day, had to go around the shoppy bit with all the vintage stuff for sale. :)
Her first proper motorsport event, said she wanted to go back again so that's a result. Probably helped by all the Goodwood-y paraphernalia like the actors, period vehicles, Laurel & Hardy (same actors from FoS) and even the large numbers of spectators in period clothing.
And seeing Stirling Moss signing books in one of those stands!
Hopefully they'll keep doing it, they always have a few but I think this was the first time they'd got so many.
Always important to consider the guest. :)
Great! Yay!
I did have something of a hangover from a gig last night.. having been ok on that level of beer before, I figured it would be a mild headache and carry on.. Err no
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/f1-debrief-what-is-this-crazy-world-we-live-in
Didn't expect this tonight
shorter show, faster to edit. woot :)
Yay! Thank you, C's. :)
Another ping: http://www.christineblachford.com/post/10379901456/introducing-formula-primo-confidential-with-between-the
Amazing.
Ooooh! :D
tonight, we are spoiling you ;)
Kai,
Are you around for tonight's game?
I'll be switching between that and the Emmys, but they are so bad so far, I may be around more for the game. :)
:)
Okay, so here's to our first commenting of Sunday Night Footlballlll!
or Football, whichever we decide to watch...
I'm still kind of amazed to see Michael Vick just out, about and playing.
Nice gadget play or how to get your QB injured on the first drive
:)
Just reading up on Vick. Injuring a $100 million QB is not a great idea
expensive
Easy sack
Do you have a fave in this game?
Not really. You?
Not really. I haven't seen much of the Falcons since I started watching again. I'm just happy to be watching football again.
Atlanta seems to have a decent running game.
I think it will take a few weeks to figure who has what
For me
I agree. And maybe Philly will tighten up coverage and their running game won't be so good by the 2nd half, as the announcer just said.
What's his name again? Not Al Michaels... Collinsworth?
Collinsworth
Thanks. We 27 year olds need to work together. ;)
TD
I can't see many teams allowing Vick so much freedom without bruising him
Wow. Good job getting his feet down.
True
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-19th-september-2011
I decided today that I'm going to this in Providence, Rhode Island this Saturday. http://www.waterfire.org/about-waterfire/welcome
I've been twice before, but I've never gone on my own. It's awesome.
Looks fun
Shall we jump into tomorrow?
Why not
