Hello there, it's Sunday and it's not a race day, so what are you doing with your hours? I know we have people out and about, travelling. Pat is on his way to the Goodwood Revival, and Amy is in Sydney watching some tennis. Meanwhile, here at Sidepodcast, we're locked away in the office thinking, plotting, planning and getting creative. Oh, and we'll be recording the Debrief soon, promise.

What else has been going on in the world? HRT confirmed the least surprising news of all time, by announcing Narain Karthikeyan for the Indian GP. He'll also be turning up in a cockpit near you at Singapore for one of the Free Practice sessions just to get his eye in. That led to plenty of rather dubious headlines, as RG noticed.

The 'Karthikeyan returns to HRT cockpit in Singapore' title in my e-mail is slightly misleading...

In non-F1 bits and pieces, yesterday was another episode of Doctor Who, and I've blogged my thoughts here, while Lukeh has his here. Just two episodes left of this series, blimey time flies.

Finally, I'll just give a quick mention to my not-quite-so-new-now website which is a dedicated space for all things author-y. The piece about reading without a Kindle, also available here on Sidepodcast, is worth another look if you've ever been in two minds about the ebook world.

Mr c, I was meaning to ask you, do you think pay as you go dongles are worth the money?

I bought an unlocked one on Amazon. For a little bit extra it gives you a choice of all the carriers in the UK and you can buy a SIM when you travel abroad too

i really can't afford 80 pound.. and don't use my ipod on the internet anyway. The thing is this is only a tempers solution to the issue that we have no internet here and I may need it for work next week and the following few weeks. We should be getting internet in no more than a month... stupid landlord.

  • lou17/09/2011 at 23:42

technicalities... we pay a monthly rent for everything, but no internet is set up. Apparently someone may be coming to check the house next week, and then the landlord will say if he'll count it as in our rent too... and we don't want to buy internet if it could be part of our contract.

Gosh I wish moving was simple

    Probably not :)

They can be a pain to set up and maintain, but most of the time they are ok. The carriers always seem to try to do funky unnecessary things that cause problems. If they just used the built in drivers in Mac OS X, there'd be much less pain :)

The old IndyCar came out a solid three seconds slower than the current Formula Nippon's at Motegi. Thankfully, we'll be shot of that car very soon.

    they're not racing nippons though?

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 00:17

    they're not racing nippons though?

No, just active comparison's being made throughout the event. The conditions are slightly different to last week (when the Nippon's ran), but not 3 seconds different.

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 00:18

Considering the cars have similar powerplants too, it's not a good look. I was listening to an interview with Wheldon a few days ago - he was raving about the new car and how it handles like an actual racing car and not a block of wood.

  • Mr C18/09/2011 at 00:18

No, just active comparison's being made throughout the event. The conditions are slightly different to last week (when the Nippon's ran), but not 3 seconds different.

odd thing to compare. surely they're quite a bit slower than an f1 car, but that doesn't stop them.

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 00:20

odd thing to compare. surely they're quite a bit slower than an f1 car, but that doesn't stop them.

The reason folks are interested is because few other comparable series' ever run on the Motegi road course.

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 00:21

It's as close to a back-to-back they can get. I'd dread to think how much quick a GP2 car would be.

  • Mr C18/09/2011 at 00:22

It's as close to a back-to-back they can get. I'd dread to think how much quick a GP2 car would be.

  • Mr C18/09/2011 at 00:23

    kinda like this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sFGXh-zthM

fun i guess, but no-one is going to quit watching DTM because it got beat by an f1 car. are they?

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 00:23

but... they're not racing them either? doesn't make any sense to me.

It's one of those thing's where no one has ever quite known how poor these cars are - remembering too that they are just clobbered together oval cars; however it's still rather unlikely that they wanted to seen as slower than a Nippon machine.

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 00:24

fun i guess, but no-one is going to quit watching DTM because it got beat by an f1 car. are they?

That's really not what I'm getting at.

  • Mr C18/09/2011 at 00:26

That's really not what I'm getting at.

i would say indycar has more problems than what their cars top speeds are. i mean, that isn't why i stopped watching. top speed isn't why danica is going to nascar either (i'm guessing).

breaking wilson's back because he's a bit tall is a good reason to change the car though.

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 00:27

i would say indycar has more problems than what their cars top speeds are. i mean, that isn't why i stopped watching. top speed isn't why danica is going to nascar either (i'm guessing).

I doubt they wanted to be shown as that much slower than a second-rate junior formula.

breaking wilson's back because he's a bit tall is a good reason to change the car though.

    A big point.

  • Mr C18/09/2011 at 00:28

I probably should have mentioned that. The Nippon's are running a more primitive version of what Swift offered IndyCar; however with Swift, it would have remained a spec-series.

    who knew?!

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 00:48

    who knew?!

The series are well aware of it. The car Nippon use is quite innovative in that it dampens the dirty air coming out of the rear of the car making following through corners much easier.

  • That'll be the Day18/09/2011 at 09:00

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - Which driver tested for Toro Rosso, on 18 Sep in '08, after finding himself without a seat when Super Aguri folded?

  • Marti18/09/2011 at 09:48

Here are two questions for That'll be the Day

How many drivers finished the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix? Which personality tried to qualify for the race, but couldn't do so?

  • Amy18/09/2011 at 09:52

not quite, more "Roger, there is a rumour that you're changing your racquet, can you confirm that?" he gives really detailed answers rather than just saying yes or no. Interviewers dream.

    Oh dear....

The old IndyCar came out a solid three seconds slower than the current Formula Nippon's at Motegi. Thankfully, we'll be shot of that car very soon.

That's great! I remember when I was predictiong that Bourdias would be absolutly useless in F1 as the indycars where seven seconds a lap slower than the F1 cars at Gilles Vileneuve durning the few years where both series ran at Montreal.

The worse part was that there was a three to four second gap from the worst F1 car at the time (may have been Super Aguri) to Bourdais indycar car pole time.... :p

Unfortunatly I am going to miss the show today, Is there a replay facility?

Replays have been a bit tricky. I'm working on it is the official answer I think :)

  • Bassano18/09/2011 at 13:29

Replays have been a bit tricky. I'm working on it is the official answer I think :)

Whilst appreciating that you are quite busy these days, can you think about a version that is suitable for a mobile device [for the future]. Even audio only would be fine

I have not only thought about it, I know what the solution is, but carving out 3 hours to broadcast, plus around 3 hours to select the music is sadly about as much as I can do these days :(

I will try and sort it :)

A friend of mine told me it was like this.

I'll phone the circuit to be sure.

World Series site says nothing about any charge.

  • Marti18/09/2011 at 19:10

World Series site says nothing about any charge.

The Circuit the Catalunya is a little bit special in this kind of cases.

For example. The F1 tests tickets are more expensive than usual.

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 19:11

The Circuit the Catalunya is a little bit special in this kind of cases.

But the World Series mandate is free access across the board and if the World Series don't charge, then something is not quite right with the circuit.

I'd be surprised - the track is being more than compensated by Renault.

    Hi guys...

Away on business but just have a few mins to post about Kimi to Williams (what else?)...

Obviously I hope he does go to Williams...

The current mich better racing will suit him very well and with a Renault engine the Williams may well be a different proposition...

I think Kimi has missed F1 (although not the media) and the time away may have focussed him on what he wants rather than what the guys around him tell him he wants....

The Rubens Williams relationship has not been particularly productive and the only reason anyone would want Sutil is for his money and Williams already have someone with money....

So it will be down to whether Kimi wants to do it and also... money...

Perhaps Frank will give him share options!?!....

Anyway if he does go back I'll be heading to a few more races next year....

(Oh and quite a few F1 fans did follow the Kimster rallying. I'd never have visited Sweden, Finland or Jordan if he hadn't gone rallying)...

  • Steven Roy18/09/2011 at 20:39

I thought that may make you happy

  • Lady Snowcat18/09/2011 at 20:46

I thought that may make you happy

You are obviously a very observant guy....

But I have had these moments before...

And I would still have loved him back at McLaren in 2010...

  • Mav18/09/2011 at 20:47

...and with a Renault engine the Williams may well be a different proposition...

Really don't accept this theory. Williams had a Cosworth engine last year and weren't anywhere near this bad - they even had a pole position. The problem is much more than simply the engine.

  • Steven Roy18/09/2011 at 20:47

And I would still have loved him back at McLaren in 2010...

He should have gone there. Kimi and Lewis would be great to watch

    (No offense of course)...

They were pretty bad last year.... and had mega problems with the way the power was laid down with the Cosworth power train I believe...

I am a great fan of the Hulk but had to admit that his pole flattered the car and was the result of unusual circumstances....

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 20:50

    Really don't accept this theory.

Agree. It still seems to be accepted that the Renault is the least powerful engine of the four.

Yeah, well, many years ago, I used to be able to jump up and pull myself into that hammock that I set up under the maple tree.....

Amazing how those things grow... Now I have to climb up an extension ladder....

    My point exactly.

The first 1/3 of the year, sure, but then they consistently got point finish positions, Q3 etc. A lot better than this year anyways

  • Mav18/09/2011 at 20:52

Red Bull aren't winning simply because of the engine, just ask Renault and Lotus.

I actually think the Renault engine has closed the gap a lot this year

  • Leigh O'Gorman18/09/2011 at 20:57

I actually think the Renault engine has closed the gap a lot this year

  • Lady Snowcat18/09/2011 at 21:00

Their problem is that they employed a flipping genius to design that beast of a car

Don't disagree but the Renault engine is pretty good too...

That's my point exactly. The wou the odd race. Schuie / Ferrari was winning everything, or at least to the point where you did not want to bet against schuie not winning the race.

There a whole lot more to it than that. Specifically, Ferrari's advantageous Bridgestone's played a decisive part in Schuey's success

it's just a kers deal though, so not sure why that would mean a factory tour of williams

Jaguar coming back to Le Mans still has some secrets about. Who knows how extensive the deal may actually be at this stage?

a trip to a race where it pours it down for 4 hours?

Hi Pat, good day at Goodwood?

Very good thanks. A completely different event to the Festival, yet some familiarity. Great to see the classic Lotuses and BRMs racing even if they seemed really slow in the wet (it did mean some pretty cool powerslides though).

Absolutely pelted it down halfway through the 60s GT race, it had to be cut short. I liked those cars a lot.

Also saw a flight of ten Spitfires, very rare occurrence.

We didn't do very well on driver-spotting because we didn't know where the drivers were located until very late on, and had gone for a walk around the circuit and the trade stands.

Neither did I, and was amazed when they announced it. And they took off almost over our heads. There was supposed to be an 11th but the rain showers kept it away. We were lucky actually, the skies cleared just in time for the display, then clouded over again after it finished. Low cloud cover.

I was with Mum so had to not be watching cars all day, had to go around the shoppy bit with all the vintage stuff for sale. :)

Her first proper motorsport event, said she wanted to go back again so that's a result. Probably helped by all the Goodwood-y paraphernalia like the actors, period vehicles, Laurel & Hardy (same actors from FoS) and even the large numbers of spectators in period clothing.

And seeing Stirling Moss signing books in one of those stands!

I agree. And maybe Philly will tighten up coverage and their running game won't be so good by the 2nd half, as the announcer just said.
