Let's start the week with a bang. Formula 1 is Singapore bound, as the travelling carnival prepares for the sport's solo night race. Despite being a relative newcomer to the F1 season, this is already one of my favourite events. This year, organisers have lined up Shakira, Linkin Park and Shaggy concerts throughout the weekend. I'm sold!
Big Audio Dynamite
To tide you over until then, we found a spare five minutes to look back at the previous Grand Prix in Monza and break it down F1 Debrief style.
Amongst other things, we discuss why Italy is more dodgy than Brazil, dance to Jaime's banging tunes, watch Luca's random appearances and rue Rosberg's missed opportunity. Be sure to listen in.
Pulp Fiction
Christine launched her brand new ebook on an unsuspecting world today. Between the Lines (Formula Primo Confidential) follows on from the sucessful release of two F1 books earlier this year and marks the girl's first foray into the world of fiction.
Available on the Amazon Kindle (and its associated apps and devices), you can download a free sample right now. I'm sure Christine will be keen to hear your feedback and more.
Comin' To Your City
I have in recent past had cause to complain about the half-arsed efforts the BBC put into some of their F1 coverage - notably their current obsession with the cheap looking opening montage, coupled with melodramatic voiceover, the kind of thing an intern could knock up in an afternoon.
The following ESPN opening clip for College GameDay caught my eye this week, and I'm thinking BeebSkyBeeb could learn a thing or two before next season. Country music duo Big and Rich wrote the theme, but it's the effort that's gone into the visuals that appeals to me.
No question, F1 coverage needs more street parades and pom poms.
That ought to be enough to get the week started, we'll see you in the (Facebook) comments.
That is a rough penalty. Not a good time for it.
Hello Monday
Hola Lunes.
Pretty stupid having a hand in the neutral zone
TD
Yep.
That Eagle was WIDE open.
Terrible coverage
*looks baffled*
what on earth are you commenting on?
NFL
on Channel 4
ah-ha! streaming?
Weird catch too. One handed while landing on his back
It's on TV
excellent, i'll put it on.
We just increased our commenters by50%
hehe. i only have a short time, but i'm up for watching a bit.
hehe
Good. :)
Atlanta Falcons red
Philadelphia Eagles white/green
wow, the presenter made no effort for tonights game :)
I don;t think he is capable of effort. Listen to the other guy in the studio. He is the Brundle
noted.
12 men in the huddle. Stupid penalty again
the official guy has a mic on the field? can the crowd hear that too?
I think we'll be seeing/hearing a lot about Julio Jones this season.
It only took 3 minutes for Aus v Switzerland to finish. Grrrrrrrrr.
But at least Switzerland won :D :D :D :D
yes
i like it.
Yes. Referee speaks to 6 other officials and tells everyone what is happening
SHort game.
Did you enjoy being in Aus when Ireland won?
I was in a restaurant, I didn't hear too much about it really.
Shame. Would have been a fun day to be at work
I can't make up my mind if the Eagles offence is great or hopeless
The briefest of insomnia-fed good morning folks
Hi Leigh
Hi Steven,
Enjoying the American Football?
That looked more like basketball
Baffled by it. Some weird things going on
There was an Irish bar full of people near where we were eating, that might have been fun
I bet.
No rugby - the only thing that mattered in Ireland today was the All-Ireland Gaelic Football final
yeah! :)
well... yesterday. Couldn't help, but notice from my Facebook / Twitter (etc), that Ireland beating Australia barely registered after a short while. It was all about the GAA
And in other news, the first race of NASCAR's Chase for the Cup has been......... postponed due to rain.
Ryan sacked again
They don't have time for rain delays in their schedule
They're running the race at 10am (EST) tomorrow I think
...or today, I forget. Oh you know what I mean.
Falcons are racking up the penalties.
Face mask is a stupid thing to get penalised for
I'm printing out sub plans that were just emailed to me by a colleague who broke her toe yesterday. Good times. :(
Ouch
OMG
Are sub plans not military secrets?
We still have to do all the work for the next day, even if we're sick or injured and aren't there to deliver it. So she sent all her plans to me so I can put them on her desk in the morning for the sub.
I see,
TD Atlanta
Can't believe the Falcons are going to lead at half time
Holy moly, back and forth, back and forth! Atlanta strips the ball from Vick and get it back.
now intercepted by the Eagles!
hmm. Commenting verrrry slow.
comments kind of broken...
ok, signing off guys. G'night.
Evenring . Anyone still around?
For those playing at home I'm tracking Pamela here http://flightaware.com/live/flight/SIA238
Morning folks (again),
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
even our taxis are reminding me it is almost the time to hop on the Singapore bound plane :-)
http://twitpic.com/6n8k80
woo! when are you flying in?
Friday around noon, enough time for half a day in a pool before the track action begins :-)
aren't these night race rhingys just fabulous for that :D
I do believe rain is forecast, but if I remember correctly, rain was forecast the two years, wasn't it?
yes, one has the entire day for life before it gets spoiled by F1 :-)
the forecast in Singapore is exactly the same 365 days a year :-)
A colleague of mine just told me he's going!
Aye
:)
how do I get a song out of my head ? any ideas ?
Sing another one REALLY LOUDLY.
that would get everybody out of the office and that is not the point :-)
I kept telling Pamela she didn't need to go so early to be touristy because you can be touristy every day before the track action, but she went anyway. She's the smart one, because that means she won't be at work tomorrow :)
I remember last year everyone telling me the forecast was so rainy that clearly the race would be a washout. Yeah, it rains every day in Singapore but its 99% of the time before I even wake up in the morning. I've only been rained on once both times I've been there.
You didn't mention that being an issue before ;)
Surely this is the year where it rains during the race though?
it hasn't any other year, I see no reason why it should this year.
Ha !! And now you've stepped into my fiendish trap Batman !!
it rained the first year, but about 2 km away from track :-)
I went to Singapore 5-6 times, F1, holidays and I swear I can't remember getting wet even once. in KL though, every time every day :-)
thats my way of saying 'how about next year, when I won't be there (probably)' :D :D
it did rain during a support race last year, I remember hiding under the grandstand for about 10 minutes :D
I was in the pool probably not realizing it is raining :-)
oh wait, I was not there last year :-)
this is my first year in a hotel with a pool and I will be making the most of it. Hopefully enough of the hotel will be staying on European time for it to be deserted when I get up :D
where you staying ?
pan pacific
oh, the one with race view :-) I think I stayed in that one the very first time I went to Singapore.
Fair enough.
Pamela should be there by now, I am eagerly awaiting a text with a report on our room. Charging the battery on my phone is probably a good step, I think it's dead.
I was actually planning to stay there when I went for the first Sing GP but that year the hotel prices were totally ridiculous, Monagesque one could say. so to save money we picked up Shangri-La resort on Sentosa, which was about half the price of any downtown hotels. and since then never went to another hotel in Singapore :-)
ahh yes, 2008 I stayed in a backpackers because I'd still be paying a hotel off now. With the Ibis last year and the Pan Pacific this year I'd hate to think what I'd try upgrade to next time I go. I think it'll be back to the Ibis in reality land :D
Just seen some of the cyclists go past - FYI Copenhagen has pretty much been closed off for the UCI world champs this week...
“It's amazing to be in the same team but for sure in Switzerland it is never easy because it doesn't matter what I am going to do or which ranking I am going to have because it's never going to be enough for Swiss people because they always look to Roger - but that's okay,” Wawrinka said.
awww, Stanley :(
F1M ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/bernie-ecclestone-confirms-bahrain-paid-cancelled-f1-race
Pamela knows how to make our hotel appeal to me
http://lockerz.com/s/140141570
FOOD.
I decided to ramble
http://davidcbrooks.wordpress.com/2011/09/19/changing-hands/
eeeek look at the picture Pamela sent from our balcony! i am shocked we even have a balcony! http://twitpic.com/6ndbn3
wow!
but please tell me you own a better camera?
heheh thats probably her iPhone. My phone has a better camera than my camera :D
I don't know what's weirder: that Bernie offered Bahrain a refund, or that Bahrain told Bernie to keep it.
I remember that! I was eagerly hoping the rain would go our way. :D
Pan Pacific has a LOVELY pool. Make the most of it. :)
So envious!
I am also impressed they came through with the twin room after telling me they didn't have any free when I asked months ago. I'm not big on sharing beds with my friends :D
Balcony? As in you-get-to-go-outside balcony? :O
We didn't have a balcony when we went, but we did have floor-to-ceiling windows with an amazing view. :)
verrrry nice
I certainly didn't pay to have a balcony, the balcony rooms were dearer!
please beg, borrow or steal a DSLR. you can't have a view like that and keep it inside your head ;)
All bull. Makes Bernie and them look like good guys. I don't believe it for a second
maybe they googled you and decided to play it safe :)
to be fair, they paid for that and we didn't. :D
I don't know how to use them :( All the people I was with at the tennis had them and I was scared and confused.
I promise I'll try my best with what I have at my disposal :D
but they're teasing us.
Most have an auto mode these days.
Think I'm gonna get one for my birthday.
:D
I think Pamela booked the better room since she booked after I did and the slightly cheaper non balcony rooms had been snapped up. By asking them to combine our bookings into the same room they appear to have upgraded one of them rather than downgraded the other. 10 points for customer service.
more like 50! :D
i need one of these: http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/Products/LUMIX+Digital+Cameras/LUMIX+G+Compact+System+Cameras/DMC-GF3/Overview/7731478/index.html
changeable lens, compact size.
looks better with the bigger lens: http://www.bjp-online.com/british-journal-of-photography/news/2078423/panasonic-unveils-lumix-camera
I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip!
Afternoon all
Any thoughts on which brand yet? Don't exclude the Micro 4/3 format either
HI Bassano
How are you today?
Ah, Mr C beat me two it. I like the Olympus Pen series too
Hi Leigh. Good thanks, booked a day off due to serious tiredness and an excess of leave :D
Very nice.
What's Micro 4/3? Thinking a Canon, cause my mates have them, they feel easy to use and the pics come out good.
Good idea.
Looks like I have lurked into a condo. about cameras!
.. look at the Sony NEX range!
also..
look at my Goodwood Revival Pics from Sunday!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lynchie999/sets/72157627575141547/
damn you autocorrect!
condo = convo.
you were just looking at one :)
That Lumix Mr C linked is one. Smaller than DSLR but with interchangeable lenses. A good in-between size if you don't want to lug a large camera around
I'm reading about it on Wikipedia now. Interesting idea.
Was Natalie doing Goodwood again this year?
our little Lumix took these pics: http://sidepodcast.com/post/the-beautiful-south
but a changeable lens for that would be heaven. which is what the GF3 essentially is.
speaking of photos, now that I've decided to perhaps use this Tumblr thing since Posterous has gotten all stupid and stuff, I think sharing the multitude of photos of my meals is in order because food rules. So here is the first one :D
Next step, finding a tumblr theme. Way too tired for that at the moment though :D
ooooooooh.
this is my favourite photo that my friend took at davis cup over the weekend simply because its different to all the other ones :)
If your mates can lend you lenses when you need 'em, it's not a bad avenue. Personally, I think the Nikons are better value at the entry level.
This may help http://www.trustedreviews.com/digital-cameras
oooh, nice! would've been ever better if the shot was focused on roger, though. :)
nooooooo!
but the whole reason I like it is because he isn't in focus, the creepy photographer is instead :D
I have a Lumix now, and I find I am lacking in certain areas when I take pics. I feel I'm ready for the next step up, but it's been a great camera.
Thanks for the tips guys!
hehe. to each his own. :)
which model?
didn't know sony did 4/3rds. canon are being left behind.
Panasonic DMC-TZ4. Had it just over two years and it's taken some great shots.
Thing is, when I went to the car race a few weeks ago my mate with the DSLR stood in the same spot and took the same pics, and not only did they come out looking nicer but he didn't have to do much processing, while I spent days doing that!
yeh, its essentially their own version of 4/3 rds.. supposed to be the best compact interchangeable out there (apart form the pens obviously!) ... also, have a look at the A55 / 33 SLTs from sony too... there are smaller than DSLRs but with the same specs etc... (they have the translucent mirror good for sports!)
Nice pics
gf3 is quite a step up in price, but still less than a dslr.
what did his setup cost?
i'm probably going with the Lumix, just because they're as focussed on video as they are still images. the new x-series is apparently fantastic for filming HD footage: http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/News/Latest+News/Two+new+high+performance+lenses+for+Lumix+G+cameras/8015136/index.html#anker_8015138
But part of the beauty of 4/3 is the commonality of the lens system. Sony always wanna do their own proprietary thing :(
can you not use the sony lenses on the olympus then?
Er, really? Nikon D3100 with lens is £420 [HD video too]
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-VBA280K001-D3100-18-55vr-Kit/dp/B00403MA4M
Doesn't look like it. Sony E-Mount system
BAH!
ooh, seems like a good price.
I sold my D40 thinking I'd get another Nikon but I am torn about a Micro 4/3
I have a 200mm lens but I guess I could flog it. In the meantime, I wait
Just a standard Canon DSLR. about 4000DKK I think...
i'm not allowed a gopro until i agree to jump off a cliff, no idea what i'll have to do to convince christine we need a new compact :)
A tandem Skydive?
:)
Helloooo :)
I'm in for another afternoon on the phone. I hate insurance! I think if I added up the money I spend talking to them on the phone, I'd have enough saved up not to need any....
Hi Alison. Buying or claiming?
Neither! My travel insurance has been auto renewed even though I asked them not to :(
This is why cancelling the direct debit is always a good idea
It was a recurring payment on a card (apparently)
That's becoming more common. Pretty sure you should be able to cancel that too, if not online then over the phone to your bank.
Damn insurers
I have no idea, I'm not a very loyal customer. I normally just compare again when it's up for renewal but my bank are giving it to me for free by virtue of being a student so I definitely don't want this.
Enjoy a little something from the Sidepodcast back catalogue.

Love this onboard lap by Berger at Suzuka. Shows how much more effort was involved then. Manual gear changes, engines and tyres that were not detuned etc. While you are watching his hands work and his head getting thrown everywhere listen to what his feet are doing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXaTt3VxytI&feature=feedrec_grec_index
Bloody fantastic. Suzuka is next up on my wish list [Spa was 1st, Montreal 3rd]
Prohibitively expensive for a GP weekend though
That's awesome. What we saw of the onboards at the Senna Movie on the big screen were like that. Magic.
I bet it is
Shows what we are missing with detuned cars and steering wheel twiddling.
And no V12's
Maybe for my 45th, I'm not sure I can wait 10 years for my 50th :D
yay for statesman :)
Good afternoon!

DUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buff... That was close!
if anyone's interested, mr c posted this earlier. There's a live stream with the guys behind f1 2011 going at the moment:
http://www.livestream.com/apexracinguk
#excited
Oooooh it's weird seeing a virtual david croft :D
Are there virtual sausages?
it's only fair :)
oops, nearly missed it.
I like how when they were in the paddock alonso kept walking about in the background.
So far really impressed with the fact there is a window and a calendar.
uh oh, it totals how many penalties you get.
hotel changes colour!!
the hotel changes colour in the game!!
best game ever.
Was putting game stuff in my daily :)
in short, it looks amazing :)
interesting, the safety car doesn't actually come part of the license. Never thought of that.
phew, proper live timing. Last years was a bit broke :)
heheheh, it even has trulli trains.
Is that rfactor, or is that F1 2011? (I'm slightly confused here)
oh, wait, perhaps I should actually listen to the audio!
graphically it looks stunning this year, Singapore looks brilliant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2sKv96TnPw&feature=related
There at India now
*They're
The left the track and putting you back again is quite annoying.
I bet Webber wish he had that Sunday
oooooh harsh, it reset him to the track when he missed the pit entry and tried to pit :D
Hehe. I know why they've added. Still doesn't seem to punish going off.
Viva la Spurs.
Don't like the fact they have got rid of Rob the engineer. Southerners....
When doing circuits they take photos every.2.steps. around the circuit
mental...
the hotel!! yaaaay.
Evening.
Good luck with the new book, Christine. I'm not really into motorsport fiction so I'll pass but I hope it sells well!
I am currently uploading Goodwood Revival photos/videos to Picasa. I saw Lynch's earlier, they are amazing, especially the Spitfires.
One more day to get Portal for free on Steam [for Mac or PC]
http://gigaom.com/apple/get-portal-free-on-steam-until-sept-20/
Would veeeeeeeeery much recommend this to all.
Evening Pat
Ooh interesting thanks. I don't have time today so will have to remember tomorrow night..
They're fantastic, wow. Looking forward to seeing yours too.
Did you manage to get through with your hangover? :)
Another cool kickstarter project. A bluetooth keyboard with 'levitating' keys. http://kck.st/oynncN [check the video]
If only it was inclined slightly
Mine are.. more amateur. :) Got a couple of lucky ones, though my camera died with a couple of hours to go.
Yeah that was a struggle.. Was much worse than the Spa Sunday hangover. Plenty of water and cups of coffee/tea in the morning, was mostly normal for the afternoon. :)
My right ear is still ringing which is very annoying now, why do some gigs have to be superloud?
I must have a browse through kickstarter some time when I have some free time
Which reminds me, I found a shop just off the Strand that sells Curry Wurst, it's called Herman Ze German: http://t.co/HgFwsn56
That deserves a visit just for the name
I have to get some sleep, absolutely drained after a very busy day today. Night chaps :)
Sold! Must go there.
Sausage was an option at GW but went for the burger.. nice but a mistake.
in the sense that it wasn't as good as wurst at absorbing hangover
Night.
Am trying to write a blog post or two but am similarly tired.
Night Lukeh
19 Villiers St, just near Embankment station
Evening :) I have just had my work leaving do. Had a tad too much Sangria.
Ideal, doubt it'll be open post-pub though
Fun night then?
Yeah really nice. I'd like to say I'm sad to be leaving but I've been working 60 hour weeks the past 5 weeks. I'm literally sick of the sight of the place!
No spelling mistakes so you can't have had that much
All things relative when I'm up at 6am....
OUCH
Everyday since last Tuesday. I'm pretty tired at the moment! :D
I was thinking of Sangria then 6am
I've got enough time to sleep it off. Why do you think I came home at 10.30?
To go back to work?
Sangria's not that strong [it's all relative though ;)]
Good idea
Aye. I'm not off until Saturday. I don't know that I'll make it.
Ask Nick, we were having a conversation on Saturday and I just started talking to him like he was a customer. Marbles = long gone
And you chose to have a leaving do on a Monday?
Yikes
We were already having a meeting tonight. We went after. I couldn't be doing with going in on a different night as well.
Goodwood pics! - https://picasaweb.google.com/PatrickWotton/2011GoodwoodRevival
Coincidentally, Lara Platman just linked these proper pics which are very nice - http://t.co/K6aoHRJq

Cool, shall check 'em out tomorrow. Night folks

See ya
Nearly shot of 'em :)
I'm alright! I can still stand unaided.... Tired tired tired. I'm really trying to save like a crazy lady. So scary not having full time work. Replacing full time job with £4k student loan does not compute in my head....!!!
It is quite a step
I think it's much worse going back too. When I left school, I'd never had a lot of money and never knew any different. Now it's a bit more like.........
Yeah same. Trying to live on the loan instead of pay would be a bit scary.
I just have no idea how that's ever enough money!?
I suppose they assume most are in halls so rent costs are low.
It's still more than I pay now though. Liverpool is cheap. Southampton is not!! :D
Yeah it is a bit pricey generally. Looking for rented accomodation somewhere or found some?
