Hello Sidepodcast fans, it is Tuesday the 20th September 2011, nearly a whole month since my last daily post! So Formula One is off to the bright lights of Singapore for F1's only night race, which is now in its 4th year. Crazy to think that Piquet's spin was that long ago.
F1 News
- Renault believe a resurgence is possible in 2012 after their upturn in performance since adding updates to the car that worked. Although what they are called, or who will driving along side Petrov remains unknown.
- Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that Bahrain did stump up the money for the race that never was, and in the long term he wants races in South Africa and Mexico. Where and how such races would be fitted into the F1 calendar remains to be seen, but one thing is certain Bernie will always follow the money!
- Speaking of tracks, Damon Hill has said that Formula 1 chiefs (so Bernie) need to do more to look after the interests of race promoters. With the huge hosting costs some tracks are struggling financially, which is why the rumoured sharing of a race between France and Belgium seems to be on the cards for the future.
- With Sam Michael set to leave the team after the race in Singapore, Williams are brining another update to the Singapore GP in the hope that it will improve their performance.
Jaime Alguersuari is already in Singapore and has been tweeting a few pictures:
The view from my room! I can see turn 5!! La vista desde mi habitacion se puede ver la curva 5! http://yfrog.com/nvzw6qj
Along with his video, taken at 2:10 UK time. Always seems crazy sticking to European Time: http://yfrog.us/1g51365936z
So with F1 2011 the game coming out this Friday (in the UK) some have been lucky enough to have preview copies of the game, and as such videos have been appearing on YouTube. Below is a preview lap of the Indian Grand Prix circuit using F1 2011, the circuit does look really good so lets hope they've got it as close as possible to the real thing.
And to make it relevant to upcoming events in this video you can see the Singapore GP circuit in the first part of this video.
Now I leave you once more so all that is left for me to do is say I hope you have a good day and I shall see you in the comments!

Posting this as apparently, Singapore is the first country not to require medical helicopters in the modern safety era. This has also helped Australia do away with medical helicopters while still meeting FIA standards.
Oooh, someone told apple Dubai exists http://www.apple.com/ae/
Obviously, rallying around a port would be crazy :P
You're welcome :)
Unlike F1? :P
the benefit of not being in the middle of a field. Or forest. Or nowhere
I would imagine there's more to it than that. For example, would this not apply to Monaco because it's too packed and Nice is the closest hospital?
how is everybody ? I still haven't solved my music issue... the song is still in my head, for third day already, I need some help ...
morning all
Looks like Joe has a new blog of his old globetrotter columns http://joeontheroad.wordpress.com
Oooohh nice
Its caused quite a stir as the prices are about 10-20% less than the shops here.
#conspiracy it only happened after steve jobs retired :P
A nugget of info I found out last night, Jon Pertwee - better known to most as the 3rd incarnation of the Doctor - raced at Brooklands prior to serving in WW2.
I am finding a lots of interesting info on pre-WWII racing ... reading the "Hitler's Motor Racing Battles" - very interesting book, gives one a bit different perspective on Mercedes, Porsche, VW, Audi ...
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
Were the Globetrotter columns part of grandprix.com?
I think so.
Originally autosport
i think the blog was plugged into grandprix.coms twitter though when joe was still there, its posting like mad :D
Scarbs just tweeted a link to this magazine - looks like messrs Saward and Tremayne write for it too: http://www.pmw-magazine.com/
I went outside to watch the bike race and some press photographers took pics of us watching while scoffing down lunch. That's gonna look good!
i think fanvision have been lurking. They have sent out a customer experience survey :)
I notice GMM have kicked into action today following some silent period.
This might not mean much to some. It may not even come to anything, but it the very practice I've been banging on about for ages that may grow motorsport in emerging markets.

I left an interesting comment earlier, I await modderation :)

Positive or negative?

If Joe's on his way to Singapore by now (probably), it might be some time before the site is updated.
It was a quote in the papers here
Doh!
ESPN F1 have a podcast and Legard is in it: http://www.espn.co.uk/formulaone/sport/video_audio/112196.html
eh?
Aye - started earlier this year I believe.
I just remembered, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Singapore Grand Prix.
Oh... and Kimi is now showing interesting in running the Indy 500...
FFS.
Hm. Shortly after the Le Mans Peugeot gossip and then the Williams gossip. Has he "made a secret visit" to a team which happens to be reviewing its driver line-up?
You know Indy, Pat. They'll review driver line-up even after qualifying day....
This is getting ridiculous now. I just wish he'd stick to something instead of becoming a Jacques of all series...
Yeah but the world and his dog is using Kimi to scare their current drivers
Probably.
Interestingly, Valtteri Bottas will be making his British F3 debut this weekend at Donington - didn't see that coming.
I'd be quite happy to never see Kimi in F1 again. I don't have some fanboy hatred of him. I just think he doesn't deserve another chance considering all those other drivers clamouring to get into F1 who never get a look in due to in season testing ban.
When he was in the sport he came across as barely interested and I think it sets a bad example to spectators. Almost comes across slightly mocking considering how much people pay and struggle just to get access to a race.
A quick driver when he could apply himself. Kinda surprised he even wants to come back to F1 at all, I don't get it. He turns away from it as it doesn't interest him and now he wants back again.
Who's to say he might not do a Lauda and win? Who knows?
To be honest, when looking at some of the potential rookies coming through, I'd almost rather have Kimi.
The rookie situation is a bit tough though; however beyond, the Hulk - who let's face it, had a mostly indifferent rookie season - none of the potential GP2 competitors strike me as future Champions. Lots of potential future Heidfeld's and Coulthard's, but no Champions.
Outside of that, Ricciardo is at this stage firmly locked into the Red Bull program and no way for Kimi in there, while the likes of Bianchi, Pic (both of them), Wickens, Rossi, Van der Garde, etc... look decent, but not outstanding.
Dunno about Kimi. I can't say I was his biggest fan, I just wish that he would commit to something now he's left F1.
I really really want to see him have a proper crack at Le Mans, I think he would do well and fit in the paddock there.
It is a crime the Hulk is not in F1 and yet Pastor is.
If you have a grid full of decent drivers, they'll all go flatter each other and make them better than they seem. Not to mention we'd probably get tight championships. It's all relative.
True - it'll be interesting to see how Hulk does in future years. Maldonado, for all his criticism, hasn't done that badly and has on a number of occasions out-shun Rubens.
That's what I mean. The GP2 field this year was decent, but very, very far from stellar.
But it's all relative - people will be praising those guys as great drivers because there's no better benchmark on the same grid.
He might do a Lauda.....he might do a Schumi
I just don't the blokes attitude warrants giving him another chance at the moment. Clearly we're only privy to what the press sells us but I think Kimi needs to drop the cool man image and show he's desperate to get back into F1. All these stories of saying he wants to do this or that strike me as a bloke who's bored and is seeing what options are out there. As a team leader I'd think why employ someone who's going to run off at the first chance of something better.
Hulk should be in that Williams......and dare I say it....is it time Rubens retired for good and let some fresh meat in for the grinder :-)
I genuinely don't think Hulk would be doing much better than Rubens or Pastor in that car.
Look how long it diResta to get a break. I think there are a few good young guys around. Vergne looks good, Marcus Ericcson looked a bit special
Bottom line is he is a real racer and should be in F1. I couldn't care less about his persona or apparent attitude. I just want to watch him race
Along with many others which could do well, Frentzen had the better of Schumi in lower league racing....
So many out there worth a craic
Jules Bianchi
Oliver Turvey
Bradley Wickens
Eric Vergne (or however you spell it)
Also I don't think Grosjean was ever given the chance he deserved.
Totally understand that, but the bloke wasn't interested in F1 and turned his back on it. Why should he be waved back in again? Plenty of other deserving drivers.
Hey all. Just found out F1 2011 is at my local game merchant. I told them to lay on it like it's a handgrenade until I get there. Anyone played it yet?
I don't believe he wasn't interested. We have all spent a lot of years complaining about drivers who think the world revolves round them and F1. Kimi has a wider view of the world and decided he wanted to try other things. I can imagine that wanting to try rallying and not being able to do so till your powers have started to wane is an unappealing prospect. Now he has tried a few other things he may have decided that F1 is where he should be. I think Kimi with renewed enthusiasm would be great for F1.
Motorbike fans don't criticise John Surtees for quitting bikes to try F1 and I am sure he would not have been criticised had he gone back to bike racing.
I think F1should have the best drivers available and Kimi is definitely one of those. I don't see the fact that he has had a couple of years off affects anyything.
THere was a live stream about the launched commented on in yesterday's daily around 6pm You may get some info in those comments
Sweet,
Just finished recording number one for the next podcast. That has made my Tuesday significantly nicer.
:)
the F1 2011 launch and tv trailers are Youtube, and look stunning in HD.

tv: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1THKIPBMf8
I've amazed myself by only getting excited over it this week.
Evening all. Work got very busy towards the end as I was trying to get my desk as clear as possible, mostly achieved that... the reason being that I'm now on holiday until next Wednesday. :) :)
It would, if he is motivated.
Ultimately I don't mind where he races as long as he races somewhere because almost every series has top drawer drivers in it even if there are only 2 or 3 of them. I don't like seeing him sitting it out.
Enjoy a little something from the Sidepodcast back catalogue.

Hello!
Evening!
Great lap! Lovely video.
The track looks great!
I can't create an account on Google +, although some rumours say it's now available for everyone :(

Jackie, I sent you a tweet you may be interested in.
Cool thanks Bassano, will go check
Question: Can you create pages and groups in Google+? Just like in Facebook
That's a very very good deal, is there much interest amongst the group for going to Spa?
Shhh, no planning ;)
#Confidential
Okay, shall make it a favourite and keep till later :D
Ok, gonna create a fake-account. Now I am 21 years old. Shh!
Or a real account from the future
Did someone say something there...#notreading
Good point of view!
Christine added to a circle.
Still discovering how this works.
I have no clue, maybe we need a guest post on how to google+
I have given in and signed up. What do I do with it?
create circles, add people to the circles. add posts, either public or to specific circles.
simply really ;)
Sit back and let google use your data :)
Sounds simple
I guess
Hai :) Another day down!
Are you feeling better than last night
Hah! I guess so. I have 2 days in work and 1 training course before I'm FREEEE
Doesn't seem long when you put it like that
Hooray!
You're doing training before you leave?
Doesn't make a lot of sense
Yah. I'm getting a transfer. It's not totally down the drain for them I guess. It's the last one in a series of courses I've been doing so I thought I might as well finish off.
Is there a North to South conversion course?
I was born in Barking!
But you've acclimatised
You need to be de-programmed
That's quite an accusation! I'm not scouse.
I was thinking Northern
I'm not Northern!
I'm hungry. Is it too late for Dominoes?
It's never too late for pizza
I thought you were supposed to be Scottish
That is not the same as Northern!?
Definitely not
They might be a bit tough to eat...
That's why I'm saying Im not Northern....
Wooo I've ordered a little pizza. Just occured to me I didn't eat since lunch. Oops.
Things I have learned this evening.
If you could fold a sheet of A4 paper 42 times it would reach the moon
Err... ok. How does that work?
Someone tell NASA that!
Each time you fold it, it doubles in thickness. 42 lots of doubling 0.1mm takes you just past the moon
Unfortunately it isn't possible
Mythbusters did an experiment with a hangar-sized piece of very thin paper. Think they got to double figures
A theoretically long piece of string, made of paper
Yes. Or if you cut your A4 sheet into a gazillion little pieces then pile them up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRAEBbotuIE
That is where I have been going wrong. I have never used a road roller or a forklift
That's the sort of experiment I dislike seeing. That's not a non-standard sized and therefore not the same scaled thickness as a piece of paper.
So yeah they folded it more than seven times, but is it really disproving the myth?
A very thin piece of paper isn't going to get you to the moon now is it....
Only in theory. In the end though if it is only 297mm long you can't make it stretch quarter of a million miles
Shucks!
I'll cancel the Dragons Den appointment then?
The name Paper Moon is probably already taken anyway
Keep the appointment. We just need a new idea
Is that like Button Moon? Where's Mr Spoon when you need him?
I think we should pitch a Dragon's Den fan club. I think they're all vain enough to fight over being president of that.
:D
Interesting approach. I approve
Shall I make you a membership card?
How much?
I assume after expenses the balance of fees is given to the Dragons to invest so there is a chance of members making a profit
