Who cares about F1, football, or any of that rubbish that also goes on in other places. Its all irrelevant, because ladies and gentlemen, boys, girls, we are in Eurovision week!

Woo, who's going to win? I genuinely don't know. I'm thinking France, but you don't know what they sound like in any of the rehearsals? Well I imagine ESCDaily is covering all the dress rehearsals with videos and everything, they are awesome. Fancy some thoughts a bit more audible? Well ESCInsight has that one covered too, daily updates every single morning.

And of course the two semi-finals are on the 10th and 12th of this week. The UK, Spain, and all of the countries in Semi Final 1 can vote in the first semi final, and everyone else in the other. The final is on Saturday and all three begin at 8pmGMT+1.

But I suppose I have to talk Formula 1, and there was some racing going on in Turkey yesterday. And guess who won. Leigh and Lukeh of course have their updates and if you missed it (like me, who was playing in torrential downpour only to lose 2-1, after we conceded 2 goals in 1 minute) of course you can read the fabulous highlights on Sidepodcast. Theres also news of DRS being confirmed as not-banned at Monaco, which is going to be fun, especially if you support a team with Kobi and Checo in it (has there been a 'how many front wings has Checo gone through' count by the way? I could swear its at about 4).

Football time and Manchester United all but secured the title. Manchester City all but secured the Champions League Playoff spot. And Charlie Adam all but secured his way out of a deal to Tottenham Hotspur. In the FA Trophy, Darlington won and in the FA Vase, Whitley Bay won their third successive vase, which by any feat, isn't half bad at all. And also means that the North East ROCKS!

Sadly this shall be my last daily for a little while, revision has to come first, and unless anyone fancies a conversation on how crucial the Second Boer War was on the 1906 Election, Sidepodcast ain't the place to do so. So from me. Au revoir.

Yeovil Town are sitting proudly in... 14th in League 1. (Which is really Division 3 in old money). Amazingly, Plymouth Argyle are in the same league and about to go down, we get South West TV news and they are always banging on about Plymouth's results ahead of everyone else's. :)

I was watching an interesting thing on (al jazeera english i think) tv the other day, about how print is about to boom.

It maybe dying off in traditional markets in the west, but a new generation of people in the developing world are going to be able to read and have micro disposable incomes. they may not ever to be able to afford a computer, but they will have a couple of cents spare to buy a paper. its likely far more newspapers will be sold over the next 50 years than there were in the last 50 years

True, I suppose. It'd be interesting to see if they try to make KERS vaguely relevant, as opposed to the system they have now.

I'm disappointed, but I suppose with the success of the DRS they don't need to make the wings drastically smaller.

I think they are actually being sensible, the new floor could be like the double diffuser of 2009, someone could have a floor that gives a lot more downforce leaving the others playing catchup.

he he... I like making up new feature requests for Mr C... :)

I had to surpress a laugh during the demo recording because I had been planning to mention how to add a guest post when I was talking about that and I was going to say, "you go to the contact section at the top of the site, but it's not there yet so you actually go to the about page and you have to remember it by thinking to yourself I wonder if there is a bit on this site which explains who these crazy people are who run a comunity driven site that doesn't have a contact section and then when you get to that page you'll see that they do have a contact section on the about page not the contact page because there isn't a contact page got that?"

But I decided that it would be better to let people build themselves up to writing a guest post so I cut it.

Well I was vaguely thinking about tackling the guest post via the form, via the posting when you log in thing and about the wiki. So I could do it there... (ps. I was thinking of doing those as three seperate videos as I guess people might just want a reminder on each thing).

Just had a look on wiki - it's a bit complicated.

16 (restaurants and with meal), 18 (otherwise):

The government has been steadily restricting alcohol in Turkey, with proposals to create alcohol-free zones, bars on alcohol sold in new packaging, bans on sports advertising, restricting sales, and making it harder to have alcohol at public events.

Only those over 24 may participate in events which distribute alcohol.

The South Pacific island nation of Samoa is to jump forward in time by one day in order to boost its economy.

Samoa will do this by switching to the west side of the international date line, which it says will make it easier for it to do business with Australia and New Zealand.

Waiting for Bernard to make the call on whether kits are allowed from Indy 2012, or season opener 2013. First three/four races 2012 are spec, after that..

The other conclusion is that whoever puts out the spectators number for the Turkish GP is not telling the truth. The organisers claimed a crowd of 110,000 over three days. Utter tosh. There might have been 42,000 on race day (although I doubt it), but there is no way that the number adds up to 110,000. I suspect that they sold a bunch of three-day tickets and have pretended that the people turned up every day, which assuredly they did not.

Are they released by the circuit owners or the race organizers?

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/05/2011 at 13:09

I assumed the race organisers as they would have been the ones that sold the tickets.

But isn't the race organizing now done by FOM?

  • RubberGoat09/05/2011 at 13:12

    Post from Joe

Wow. He sounds a little grumpy! Totally agree with his sentiments about how the races are much more exciting but I don't agree that we should give up on Turkey. I just think it's been promoted really badly...

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/05/2011 at 13:12

But isn't the race organizing now done by FOM?

Technically, they're the rights owners, not the organisers.

  • Journeyer09/05/2011 at 13:12

But isn't the race organizing now done by FOM?

    Or some Bernie-led consortium anyway.

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/05/2011 at 13:13

Remembering of course that the promoters / organisers are actually the same people

  • Journeyer09/05/2011 at 13:13

Technically, they're the rights owners, not the organisers.

    Ah. Fair enough.

  • Alianora La Canta09/05/2011 at 14:22

Are they released by the circuit owners or the race organizers?

Not sure. FOM promotes the race but doesn't own the rights.

  • Alianora La Canta09/05/2011 at 14:26

I suspect that they sold a bunch of three-day tickets and have pretended that the people turned up every day, which assuredly they did not.

One-ninth of the race ticket holders didn't show up on race day in 2009, so that's probably an accurate gross figure (i.e. tickets sold) rather than a net one (i.e. people who showed up). If anything, it's slightly better for the organisers for someone to buy a ticket and not show up than for them to attend as a paying spectator, because they don't get any per-customer income on the catering (that'll be a one-off income tab per caterer) and they have less cleaning-up to do after the race finishes.

If the figure for non-attendees is 1/9th, then that gives a race attendence of 37,333 (up over 5000 from 2009's attendance) and a 3-day attendance of 97,778. And I believe Joe's assessment that most of the tickets sold were 3-day ones would be accurate.

  • Alianora La Canta09/05/2011 at 14:29

The other thing is that the 2010 3-day figure (presumably also "tickets sold") was 110,400. So the figures have dropped slightly since last year however the figures are massaged.

Good(wood) stuff. I looked at the prices earlier. I'll either do the same two days or add Sunday, but I'm not yet sure if I'd want a 3rd day there even with all that stuff. The difference in cost isn't much, the travel or hotel cost might be (not sure if I'll commute).

It is May and that means the build-up to the Indianapolis 500, which this year celebrates its 100th Anniversary.

The first track action is Thursday (weather permitting) and that will be for Rookie Orientation Practice. Anyone new to Indy has to complete runs at certain speeds. I mention this partly to get everyone excited for Indy again and partly because the ROP list was released today and these drivers are on it:

JR Hildebrand, Ho-Pin Tung, James Jakes, Scott Speed, Pippa Mann, Charlie Kimball and James Hinchcliffe.

A mix of talent levels and experience levels there.

my problem is i got so many shots last time i want to go for more than one day. I did think i could do that, but it's a pretty long train journey so i'd need to get up at like 5 just to get there for 10 (would want a full day there for shooting etc).

Think i need to take a few days out to just work through how i could make it work, would love to go, specially if loads of sidepodcast people came too, would be such a laugh. I also feel like as it would be my 4th year in a row it's now part of my year and i need to go.

ah well, will see which day Jenson is confirmed for and work it that way maybe. whatever happens i want pics from you all! :)

  • MartiV809/05/2011 at 18:46

    One question.

Yesterday I was relistening to one of the F1 Debrief's Sidepodcast has produced during this season, and I heard something like 'Nick Heidfeld made a three-point-turn'.

I realized Christine and Mr C were talking like 'that's very strange, what has he done', but I didn't understand what did you mean.

Any volunteer wants to explain it to me hehe?

yeah i finish uni for summer in June, if i've got a house in Farnham for second year over the summer then things become easier, but many want you to move in late August which is too later for FOS. I could maybe leave the exchange student (cause she's a family friend) for friday + sat and return that evening, but it all depends on money/farnham house.

May be able to get mum to drive me for a day but that gets complicated cause i much prefer to shooting independently so i don't worry about running off from mum and loosing her in the crowds :D

    Two videos from Spa..

I read Adam Cooper on twitter, he was talking about that.

The first video is really, really scary. The driver was so lucky, and fortunetely there were no photographers or marshalls there.

Any volunteer wants to explain it to me hehe?

A 3 point turner is something people are taught when they are learning to drive. It is a way of turning the car so it is facing the opposite direction. So first they dive forward and turn the steering to face the opposite kerb stopping just before they reach the kerb. Then they reverse to the normal side of the road. At this point the car is diagonally across the road but pointing in the opposite direction to the one it started in. The third point of the turn is to drive off and straighten the car up so that it is in the normal position.

  • MartiV809/05/2011 at 18:54

Bye bye everyone, see you tomorrow ;)

yeah i finish uni for summer in June, if i've got a house in Farnham for second year over the summer then things become easier, but many want you to move in late August which is too later for FOS. I could maybe leave the exchange student (cause she's a family friend) for friday + sat and return that evening, but it all depends on money/farnham house.

Well hopefully it all get sorted, otherwise we'll do our best..

Yeah, put the delivery at 4-6 weeks. That could improve, I guess it depends on how many orders there are and how much space is in the production line
