Who cares about F1, football, or any of that rubbish that also goes on in other places. Its all irrelevant, because ladies and gentlemen, boys, girls, we are in Eurovision week!
Woo, who's going to win? I genuinely don't know. I'm thinking France, but you don't know what they sound like in any of the rehearsals? Well I imagine ESCDaily is covering all the dress rehearsals with videos and everything, they are awesome. Fancy some thoughts a bit more audible? Well ESCInsight has that one covered too, daily updates every single morning.
And of course the two semi-finals are on the 10th and 12th of this week. The UK, Spain, and all of the countries in Semi Final 1 can vote in the first semi final, and everyone else in the other. The final is on Saturday and all three begin at 8pmGMT+1.
But I suppose I have to talk Formula 1, and there was some racing going on in Turkey yesterday. And guess who won. Leigh and Lukeh of course have their updates and if you missed it (like me, who was playing in torrential downpour only to lose 2-1, after we conceded 2 goals in 1 minute) of course you can read the fabulous highlights on Sidepodcast. Theres also news of DRS being confirmed as not-banned at Monaco, which is going to be fun, especially if you support a team with Kobi and Checo in it (has there been a 'how many front wings has Checo gone through' count by the way? I could swear its at about 4).
Football time and Manchester United all but secured the title. Manchester City all but secured the Champions League Playoff spot. And Charlie Adam all but secured his way out of a deal to Tottenham Hotspur. In the FA Trophy, Darlington won and in the FA Vase, Whitley Bay won their third successive vase, which by any feat, isn't half bad at all. And also means that the North East ROCKS!
Sadly this shall be my last daily for a little while, revision has to come first, and unless anyone fancies a conversation on how crucial the Second Boer War was on the 1906 Election, Sidepodcast ain't the place to do so. So from me. Au revoir.
Monday........

The Eurovision is good to everyone :)
Glad I have prior plans for Saturday

I saw the last 20 minutes of the game, when I got to Dad's. Quite the atmosphere at Old Trafford afterwards.
Yeovil Town are sitting proudly in... 14th in League 1. (Which is really Division 3 in old money). Amazingly, Plymouth Argyle are in the same league and about to go down, we get South West TV news and they are always banging on about Plymouth's results ahead of everyone else's. :)

I was watching an interesting thing on (al jazeera english i think) tv the other day, about how print is about to boom.
It maybe dying off in traditional markets in the west, but a new generation of people in the developing world are going to be able to read and have micro disposable incomes. they may not ever to be able to afford a computer, but they will have a couple of cents spare to buy a paper. its likely far more newspapers will be sold over the next 50 years than there were in the last 50 years
I would, but #nopolitics. :D
Especially as it's the kind of politics discussion that could start a war.
Morning.
Sounds like an interesting study topic. Good luck with your revision!

Think this got lost in midst of the race, but apparently the 2013 'ground-effect' aero have been abandoned with the teams going with something else: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/13326363.stm
i read that yesterday and thought "not bad"
Notice, though, how the article had clear mentions of the DRS, but nothing on KERS...
KERS will be part of the new engine rules, I think. This was just detailing the aerodynamics.
True, I suppose. It'd be interesting to see if they try to make KERS vaguely relevant, as opposed to the system they have now.
I'm disappointed, but I suppose with the success of the DRS they don't need to make the wings drastically smaller.
I wish they would. Proper hybrid cars would be awesome I reckon.

Aye, I think it's important for them to at least consider the potential of electric cars in the new formula.
I think they are actually being sensible, the new floor could be like the double diffuser of 2009, someone could have a floor that gives a lot more downforce leaving the others playing catchup.

Nah, I'd much rather go down to the local pub and see 8 comedians for £8 - some of whom may actually be funny!
he he... I like making up new feature requests for Mr C... :)
I had to surpress a laugh during the demo recording because I had been planning to mention how to add a guest post when I was talking about that and I was going to say, "you go to the contact section at the top of the site, but it's not there yet so you actually go to the about page and you have to remember it by thinking to yourself I wonder if there is a bit on this site which explains who these crazy people are who run a comunity driven site that doesn't have a contact section and then when you get to that page you'll see that they do have a contact section on the about page not the contact page because there isn't a contact page got that?"
But I decided that it would be better to let people build themselves up to writing a guest post so I cut it.

Hehehe. That would be a great video too though :)
Well I was vaguely thinking about tackling the guest post via the form, via the posting when you log in thing and about the wiki. So I could do it there... (ps. I was thinking of doing those as three seperate videos as I guess people might just want a reminder on each thing).
But it will need a bit of time free so it might not be for a bit.
Absolutely. You can't rush genius.

Afternoon folks, popping in quickly with this this piece that made me smile. May be taken with a pinch of salt [BBC F1 gossip]:
Vettel was reportedly banned from drinking champagne on the podium as he celebrated winning on Sunday. The 23-year-old championship leader was told he must resist drinking the champagne because Turkey's new alcohol age limit is 24
:)
He definitely did drink some, though!
Arrest him and ban him from leaving the country untill the end of november

The South Pacific island nation of Samoa is to jump forward in time by one day in order to boost its economy.
Samoa will do this by switching to the west side of the international date line, which it says will make it easier for it to do business with Australia and New Zealand.
At present, Samoa is 21 hours behind Sydney. From 29 December it will be three hours ahead.
:D Back to the Future?

I feel sorry for all the people who will miss their Birthdays!
:D Hahahaha! It'll also attract tourists in that it's now one of the first to greet the New Year instead of one of the last.
Meh. Think about the people born on February 29! ;)
It needs to. It's silly how it's a whole day behind when it basically depends on Aus/NZ...
It's good, they can stay a year younger.

Keep an eye out for Open Wheel Weekly this week. The first 2012 Dallara aero kit is to be unveiled
Any more news on that? Are we going to have a spec series or will Indycar become a proper formula again?
There's no way to watch it though. I bet Miller will have it on Speed.com mid-show, like the announcement last week.
In general, I just don't rate him at all, but he's never raced on a Super Speedway or any kind of oval before. There are a lot better or experienced drivers than him that might not make it
I see.
and that team will no doubt be trying a bit harder to get Scott Speed qualified
absolutely. Not the least of which to stop him whining.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/09/world/middleeast/09bahrain.html
Didn't the FIA say they'd give Bahrain until June?
Hmmm.
We should know a little more soon. The earliest new aero kit from another manufacturer is looking like Indy next year
Don't forget, even Paul Tracy missed out last year
Waiting for Bernard to make the call on whether kits are allowed from Indy 2012, or season opener 2013. First three/four races 2012 are spec, after that..
He's old and has too much success ballast though.
spec aero that is, 3 engines will be in from the start of the year

Post from Joe
The other conclusion is that whoever puts out the spectators number for the Turkish GP is not telling the truth. The organisers claimed a crowd of 110,000 over three days. Utter tosh. There might have been 42,000 on race day (although I doubt it), but there is no way that the number adds up to 110,000. I suspect that they sold a bunch of three-day tickets and have pretended that the people turned up every day, which assuredly they did not.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/05/09/conclusions-from-turkey/
Are they released by the circuit owners or the race organizers?
I assumed the race organisers as they would have been the ones that sold the tickets.
But isn't the race organizing now done by FOM?
Wow. He sounds a little grumpy! Totally agree with his sentiments about how the races are much more exciting but I don't agree that we should give up on Turkey. I just think it's been promoted really badly...
Technically, they're the rights owners, not the organisers.
Or some Bernie-led consortium anyway.
Remembering of course that the promoters / organisers are actually the same people
Ah. Fair enough.
Not sure. FOM promotes the race but doesn't own the rights.
One-ninth of the race ticket holders didn't show up on race day in 2009, so that's probably an accurate gross figure (i.e. tickets sold) rather than a net one (i.e. people who showed up). If anything, it's slightly better for the organisers for someone to buy a ticket and not show up than for them to attend as a paying spectator, because they don't get any per-customer income on the catering (that'll be a one-off income tab per caterer) and they have less cleaning-up to do after the race finishes.
If the figure for non-attendees is 1/9th, then that gives a race attendence of 37,333 (up over 5000 from 2009's attendance) and a 3-day attendance of 97,778. And I believe Joe's assessment that most of the tickets sold were 3-day ones would be accurate.
The other thing is that the 2010 3-day figure (presumably also "tickets sold") was 110,400. So the figures have dropped slightly since last year however the figures are massaged.
This video is genius http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=2012382155067
Very suspicious, and I don't see how this makes Bahrain any safer for F1 to be.

Goodwood tickets are booked, will be there Friday & Saturday.
yippee. not sure what we're doing yet, but i'm thinking all three days. must discuss.
Good(wood) stuff. I looked at the prices earlier. I'll either do the same two days or add Sunday, but I'm not yet sure if I'd want a 3rd day there even with all that stuff. The difference in cost isn't much, the travel or hotel cost might be (not sure if I'll commute).
i think it'll depend how many people go. lots of people to meet up with might make it worth the three days.
Unfortunately I've got Kai staying or I could offer you a room. We'll be travelling by train so I'm hoping the shuttle bus is on again.
Not that it's unfortunate for me that Kai's here but you know what I mean #needtostopdigging
That's what I'm thinking too. Slower walk about with a group rather than rush about on my own. Might at last see why they call it a garden party atmosphere, so far it has been 'mad rush pushing through people'. ;)
same! although one year it was 'huddle in the tent to keep dry'.
Oh don't worry, wasn't angling for one, ta though. :)
I'm thinking if there's a group coming we could get ourselves into a hotel somewhere nearby for night time drinkies.
We need you to set up a Sidepodb&b
It is May and that means the build-up to the Indianapolis 500, which this year celebrates its 100th Anniversary.
The first track action is Thursday (weather permitting) and that will be for Rookie Orientation Practice. Anyone new to Indy has to complete runs at certain speeds. I mention this partly to get everyone excited for Indy again and partly because the ROP list was released today and these drivers are on it:
JR Hildebrand, Ho-Pin Tung, James Jakes, Scott Speed, Pippa Mann, Charlie Kimball and James Hinchcliffe.
A mix of talent levels and experience levels there.
Maybe just a b as my cooking is appalling ;)

I'm sure it will be, always super duper easy to get to via the shuttle bus form the train station too
Hoping to be there too but just keeping an eye on working out accomodation stuff before deciding whether it's plausible + possibility I might be busy with new job but with weekends off I should be there for at least one or two days hopefully.

So easy to spend more than you intend in the supermarket..
You're not coming??
it's looking less and less likely for me. i'll evaluate properly after friday when i'm a bit more free from work, but i have a German exchange student staying with me at home, plus being unable to drive, and having limited funds for accommodation etc. Am close to giving up with solutions and just admitting i wont be able to attend my fav weekend of the year this time round.
That's a shame. :(
Maybe try for one day, train it there/back?
my problem is i got so many shots last time i want to go for more than one day. I did think i could do that, but it's a pretty long train journey so i'd need to get up at like 5 just to get there for 10 (would want a full day there for shooting etc).
Think i need to take a few days out to just work through how i could make it work, would love to go, specially if loads of sidepodcast people came too, would be such a laugh. I also feel like as it would be my 4th year in a row it's now part of my year and i need to go.
ah well, will see which day Jenson is confirmed for and work it that way maybe. whatever happens i want pics from you all! :)
Presumably you'll be done for the year at Farnham by then? That's much nearer. Complicated with the exchange student though (do they like racing..? :) )
One question.
Yesterday I was relistening to one of the F1 Debrief's Sidepodcast has produced during this season, and I heard something like 'Nick Heidfeld made a three-point-turn'.
I realized Christine and Mr C were talking like 'that's very strange, what has he done', but I didn't understand what did you mean.
Any volunteer wants to explain it to me hehe?
Two videos from Spa..

He did this too, we ought to have done the comparison :)
http://twitpic.com/4vlcq0
Which bit? The three point turn or the fact that it was weird?
yeah i finish uni for summer in June, if i've got a house in Farnham for second year over the summer then things become easier, but many want you to move in late August which is too later for FOS. I could maybe leave the exchange student (cause she's a family friend) for friday + sat and return that evening, but it all depends on money/farnham house.
May be able to get mum to drive me for a day but that gets complicated cause i much prefer to shooting independently so i don't worry about running off from mum and loosing her in the crowds :D
It's easy to get lost at Goodwood ;)
The three point turn.
aw it was my first time there! i'd like to think after 4 years i have a better idea than i did then :D
http://www.motorward.com/2009/10/how-to-three-point-turn/
I read Adam Cooper on twitter, he was talking about that.
The first video is really, really scary. The driver was so lucky, and fortunetely there were no photographers or marshalls there.
Thanks :D
A 3 point turner is something people are taught when they are learning to drive. It is a way of turning the car so it is facing the opposite direction. So first they dive forward and turn the steering to face the opposite kerb stopping just before they reach the kerb. Then they reverse to the normal side of the road. At this point the car is diagonally across the road but pointing in the opposite direction to the one it started in. The third point of the turn is to drive off and straighten the car up so that it is in the normal position.
Bye bye everyone, see you tomorrow ;)
Or that

Catch Gavin in the morning
Yeah, I'll see if he's around before I head out to work
Am reading Pat's Staurday account of Spa, just got to the 'Proper Belgian Beer' section :D

you could tweet amanda?
140 characters might be hard. As it's over a month away, I'm sure it can wait another day :D
true. alt, you could comment the request then tweet the link. it is aaages away though :)
i guess if you were reaaaaaally inspired, you could write a whole post about it...
I'll see what Kai wants to do, maybe we'll colaborate
Eventually Alonso and his people got up to leave, he looked over at us and we all wished him luck for the race!
Wow. Just amazing. On that note it was time to return (we may have had another beer first).
Mr C, I ordered my iMac this evening
Can't get too excited while the build to order specs are put together
Will probably know the Lion release date before it arrives
blimey. is that because of the ssd?
Yeah, put the delivery at 4-6 weeks. That could improve, I guess it depends on how many orders there are and how much space is in the production line
I'm in no hurry really, just keen to get clicking :)
i read somewhere that apple are waiting for a new ssd model to be released? if true, it'll ship as soon as it's available.
The MacBook Airs are now shipping with a better [Samsung?] drive
The iMacs have a new Z68 chipset/controller which is apparently much better. Just trawling the Mac news as we speak, haven't seen any SSD mentions yet
:)

Morning. I tried to contact Amanda as she was tweeting but she never responded. Was she supposed to write the daily today?
No idea to be honest
I got me some strawberries today
:)
So the Indy500 has lost one entry - "China Racing" has quietly disappeared
Who was driving that one?
