Hello there, me again! Many thanks to Gavin to publishing an emergency daily, but I'm here to fill us in on the details. What shall we do today? Let's have a list of ten things. Five Formula One items for discussion, and five not so F1 related.

F1 all the way

  • Motorhomes. I like this F1 Big Picture, obviously, that's why I posted it. It makes the Mercedes GP motorhome look very welcoming. What did you make of the motorhomes this weekend? There were only a few that were particularly exciting. I quite liked it when there was a race on to have the best motorhome as well as the best car, but cost-cutting affects all areas of F1, I suppose.
  • Rate the Race. Yesterday we posted the latest F1 Debrief show, and with it came our ratings for this race, plus a quick mention of driver of the day. After the episode went up, I gathered our findings in a post, which means you can let us know your rating and top driver as well.
  • Joe has posted his thoughts on Turkey, and remains adamant that we won't be going back to the circuit any time soon. I can see what he means, but the track really grew on me yesterday. I suppose you can't base a ridiculous 17 year or somesuch contract extension on one race. Or can you?
  • The debate over the new regulations that help overtaking rumbles onwards, and I quite liked this post from Autosport that gathered together thoughts from various people in the paddock.
  • Also from Autosport, the excellent Paddock Life that talks many of the things I've mentioned here, but also Vettel being a bit naughty on the podium. Read on!

Outside motorsport

  • Firstly, the big countdown to Eurovision is on. It takes place this Saturday, and we'll be live commenting and Factbyte Factboxing all the fun and games here on Sidepodcast. RG has some fantastic coverage on his blog, though, and recently listed why the UK could win. It won't happen, but yay for optimism!
  • I'm not sure if we have promoted Lukeh's Summer Portrait blog here or not yet, but it's worth doing it again anyway. I think it's fair to say we were all stunned at the quality of the sketching, and it's such a nice idea. It makes me feel all happy and summery. I wish I could draw!
  • I know I linked to this in the comments yesterday, but it is still boggling my mind a little bit. Samoa is going to skip a day in an effort to match timezones with Australia. I can see why they're doing it but are you really allowed to just wake up one day and say, nah, I want it to be tomorrow? Because I could make great use of that!
  • If you like what you see when you come and read a Sidepodcast daily post, why not sign up to try your hand at writing one? We've got regular slots available but always welcome the one-off post as well.
  • The last thing I will say is that I am away for four days now, and whilst I will still be popping in to Sidepodcast all the time, I am going to be leaving Mr C on his own. If you see him in the comments, make sure to look after him. You know what he's like.

That will do it for today. Again my thanks to Gavin for jumping in, and all that is left for me to say is to wish you a great day, and as always, I'll see you in the comments.

    Continuing on from yesterday / today;

    ;)

    Who was driving that one?

It was an entry with a Brazilian F3 driver that - to be honest - I had never heard of, Vincenzo Guadalajara

The guy isn't even in Driver Database!! Although he started following me about ten minutes after I asked Midweek Motorsport who he was (they had no idea either)

If you could jump in that would be great. I'm going to be writing my usual daily with loads of links tonight anyway ;)

Excellent work Gavin, if you see your post rated one star it's no reflection on you, it's just me struggling to tap the right place on the iPad screen. Next time Amy, zoom in!

I'm not surprised by that oddly. No one else in F1 I follow goes on about how hard it is to leave their family behind so much.

According to reports from Istanbul, Sutil assaulted one of the LRGP owners and badly injured him after the Chinese GP

He said he is hearing stuff from RAI TV and French TV but it's not being reported:

There isnt any link. The story isnt on the internet. RAI and TF1 mentioned that Sutil had a bar fight after China.

Some others reported that one of LRGP owners was a victim (Scars were visible on his throat) of an assault from a paddock person

  • Amy10/05/2011 at 12:08

Hard to discuss speculation (only GMM do that), but if it's true, Sutil can kiss his F1 career goodbye.

  • Amy10/05/2011 at 12:11

    Sounds like it.

I'm not inclined to believe it, surely if it had happened it would have hit the news quicker, and English speaking media would be all over it.

Especially if Hamilton was involved. And I always assumed Sutil was the nice, non agressive type?

Let's wait and see, but a couple weeks ago Dimitris was perpetuating the rumour that Sonangol had become title sponsors of Lotus, so maybe he's jumping the gun again?

Not sure what you mean by jumping the gun. Joe has mentioned the Sonangol angle, though, so it looks like there's something to it.

Yeah, f1 journos seem to know him, but he is a bit unreliable.

Then again sonangol reps were in the Team Lotus garage at the weekend

Hello all, can't stop but just saw this www.bbc.co.uk/new…business-13343600 Microsoft buying Skype - Good or bad?

It has its pros and cons, but as a whole, more bad than good for me. I'm not sure MS will handle Skype the way they should. May also complicate things for non-Windows users.

They have a huge userbase and proven technology. Microsoft will probably replace/merge it with live messenger, and put itnto into xboxes.

Once they have it in the living room they can do a lot with it in terms of both ads and usage charges

I think Its not so much the details, which are quite limited compared to say a gmail or facebook account, but the goodwill.

A ready made customer base of people happily using a product is valuable, add in the tech that makes it all possible and microsoft can really grow it.

Non-English in the sense that they use the local language of wherever the race is, right?

Graphics were mainly Italian and later French, before switching to English.

In the early days, it might be local language, but the graphics were really basic - you might occasionally get gaps between two cars and the top twelve would be just the car numbers on the bottom of the screen

  • Anthony (PTaruffi)10/05/2011 at 16:04

Not sure actually. I just don't see him doing that well for some reason.

My basis is just that F1 drivers historically have made big splashes when they come to Indycars. Seven-to-nine years ago, on CBS's Sixty Minutes, Michael Schumacher publicly turned his nose up at Indy, and pointed out that phenomenon to underline his disdain. He also said it was too dangerous for him.

  • Leigh O'Gorman10/05/2011 at 16:08

Yes. But going to pretty much any of the companies you guys were talking about earlier would surely turn it into over-bloated unuseable tat over the next three or four years. The big companies do like to add all these pointless 'features'.

Yeah the car, or rather the 'base' of the car with two 'concept' aero kits which won't actually be raced. The test car will run in a few months, and teams will get their first cars in December/January.

  • Pat W10/05/2011 at 18:22

Yes, that's true. But well, teams try to develop their cars to the limit, so I think it wouldn' help them a lot to have to focus on a new car in the middle of the season, knowing they'll be in the fight until the last races...

This isn't actually true I don't think... it's one of those weird myths... I think it's to do with recycling... Newsagents now get money for giving back non-bought newspapers whereas they used to have to get rid of them somehow and would give them free to fish and chip shops and florists.

But also once people started thinking it was about health and safety I think even more places changed because they were worried people would think their fish and chips wasn't safe because people thought, "well maybe there's something in it".

  • Mr C10/05/2011 at 18:45

    It could be.

In NASCAR they take this very seriously and it is interesting to note the latest innovation at Charlotte Motor Speedway where there will soon be the world’s largest high definition video screen, which will measure 61 metres in length and will be 24 metres high. Situated between Turns Two and Three, on the outside of the backstretch, the screen will be visible from the vast grandstands opposite the pits. The screen will consist of 158 panels with nine million bulbs, supported by a steel frame 100 ft high.

I have an idea for fixing quali...

    Q3 (as now) 107% rule

    Q2 102% rule

    Q1 101% rule

All disqualified drivers start from the back of the grid with those knocked out in Q3 behind those knocked out in Q2 etc.

  • Alex Andronov10/05/2011 at 18:47

All disqualified drivers start from the back of the grid with those knocked out in Q3 behind those knocked out in Q2 etc.

So a driver qualifies for Q1 starts behind those who failed to get out of Q3 but met the 107?

I liked the year where it was in reverse championship order, which was pre-sidepodcast. That was great because it really really really annoyed Schumacher.... it evened things up quite nicely. But the TV people didn't like it.

I just think that while my system sounds mildly complicated everyone understands the 107% rule and it would mean that people would have to keep going out... And if they don't make it then they would have to start from the back and try and "do a Webber" in the modern parlance.

  • Mr C10/05/2011 at 19:01

I would suggest getting rid of Blue flags as well then

  • Pat W10/05/2011 at 19:03

They changed it a few times yes.

I liked it best at Magny-Cours when it rained just before Friday's session and then dried, and the fast guys had to go out first. It was on combined times Friday and Saturday, Minardi went into the next day with a 3 or 4 second margin which was how far behind they usually were, so they got the front row. Much fun seeing Schumacher, Ferrari and other flap around trying to get them put to the back 'for safety reasons'. FIA said 'No'. :)

That gives Liuzzi a 4 minute head start on Vettel.

Schumacher gets nearly 2 minutes too

It's not bad. It's the local park and I have a great view from the top (I can see Sweden). Also I saw a deer and a Pheasant the other day...

  • Pat W10/05/2011 at 21:47

For another word on the IndyCar do read Pruett, his words are always carefully considered and more often than not he's bang on.

Not sure I like the new car mockups. Too much like modern F1 cars.

The F1-style front wing and other bits surprised me. I quite like the crossover between IndyCar and F1, be interesting to see if they all turn out that way.

Swindon, Sweden, they both have IKEA and Volvos...

(not very good at this, where's christine?)

  • Lukeh10/05/2011 at 22:50

Today I've been doing my first sketch for years using 12 tones of pencil instead of just the one or two. Now I remember why I went to one or two.

"Oh how does this one look? How about this one? This is darker... this is lighter... ooh this is a bit more lighter... ooh that's too light..." and so on. Fun though. I think I prefer it this way in fact.

Tis probably the most unexciting train of thought but it's awesome when you get the right shade :)

They really seem quite easy to keep. The young and very old ones get special attention but the rest are thrown outside and just get a hay bale now and then (we don't have any green grass yet just mud and snow)

That would be a little cruel when they can barely stand. The trouble with horses is that they have no brakes and they want to drive. 5mph on a horse is scary

I have only been on a horse once and regardless how hard I pulled the strings the horse went wherever it wanted. Unfortunately where it wanted to go was to lean over a bridge above a motorway. No soapbox would do that

    !!

Sitting on a horse walking across the bridge was uncomfortable. When it decided it wanted to go and lean over the edge and have a close look at the traffic it was way scarier than a race car swapping ends at close to 100mph

The horse was homocidal not suicidal. It was staying where it was it just wanted to dangle me over the edge of the bridge.
