The countdown to the Montreal GP continues but more importantly (to me at least) is the fact that South Africa 2010 is only 3 days away. And for all fellow tennis-lovers: Wimbledon is starting in less than a week. Or 13 days, to be exact. Despite downshifting, Sidepodcast is now bringing widespread sports coverage to the masses. But moving on to more pressing things like click-able links:

And finally I hope we can have a poll on which team is most likely to have a paddock bust-up. We need more on-track action guys!

People keep trying to take my shift on Monday and ooh its tempting because 2am race=ouch but its a public holiday and I get paid at 250% of my normal rate. Why can't I get paid that much to have a day off?

Hmm. Sleep. I need some of that - blasted helicopter kept me awake last night hovering nearby for about an hour. Night all.

    Morning everyone,

  • Amy07/06/2010 at 23:47

I can sleep through helicopters because i've lived a block from a hospital for 4 years and gotten adjusted to the noise. Its handy,

Question, does the new start time for the Canadian G.P. (12h00 local, 17h00 GMT) suit Europe, or would a more traditional 14h00/19h00 GMT be preferred?

  • Alison07/06/2010 at 23:56

Hiiiii I'm still alive. I'm pretty merry....

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2010 at 23:56

wasn't it 1800GMT previously? i think it works fine

broadcasters used to get annoyed the the GP cut into their evening programming - 1200 local is a bit early on Canada's I would have thought...

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2010 at 23:56

    drunk Alison?

  • Alison07/06/2010 at 23:59

    12h00 is a bit-early-ish, for an on-site race.

Personally, I LOVE the usual 08h00 (GMT -05) races. By 10h30 I am ready to tackle the rest of Sunday. Nothing says F1 like waking up to watch a race.

agreed. it's not what you'd call subtle. it just throws everything but content text and images away.

    Morning

A video interview of Sebastian Vettel has led Mr. C to label him mini-Schumi.

Spot on Mr. C. He's lost his fun, aloof side and become the serious, ruthless character we used to dislike...

  • RubberGoat08/06/2010 at 06:30

Apparently this is supposed to help in planning which games to watch. My guide is much simpler: watch Spain and Brazil and the final (where both teams will inevitably end up in). :D

WOW. That's "Information is Beautiful"-worthy. Check it out even if you hate football...

  • F1Wolf08/06/2010 at 07:04

Mr Goat, what team is your team ? NZ or DK ?

  • Amy08/06/2010 at 07:26

    Right, here goes:

Born in England with an Italian Mum,

    Grew up in NZ,

Married a Dane who will kill me if I don't them

Sits next to Spanish and Argentinians who also have threatened me if I don't support them...

Turns out all my colleagues want England to lose, and we also had a big discussion about Argentina vs. Brazil. Fun times :D

  • Christine08/06/2010 at 09:20

    Oooh. Care to elaborate ?

    Erm, assuming I understand correctly.

There are 20ish players and 32 teams. So the teams are ranked by order of betting odds, and the top 20ish have a ticket, and then the remaining teams all fall under one ticket. You get to draw out of the hat, so if you draw that golden ticket, you get more than one team but they are all rubbish.

    I think.

  • Leigh O'Gorman08/06/2010 at 10:14

the other alternative is that two people in the world like Brian McFadden and that can't be right.

i've been arguing for years that one brian mcfadden is in fact a temporal anomoly that is silently ripping the fabric of time and space apart - what many don't realise is that it's Simon Cowell's ego that is holding reality together

Guinness on Wiki ... admittedly, this nearly made me wretch:

"Guinness is frequently used as an ingredient in recipes, often to add a seemingly authentic Irish element to the menus of faux-Irish pubs[53] in the United States, where it is stirred into everything from french toast to beef stew"

    Guinness in French Toast???

Great quote, shame about the way Jean implemented his thinking. If this was going to tender, it should have been sent out for it weeks, maybe even months ago. A decision is needed now due to design deadlines, not in six weeks time when a tender is completed!

I follow two people who think Twitter is for this sort of random musing. Surprisingly, they've got a massive amount of followers. People seemingly love random.

  • Jeremy08/06/2010 at 11:28

And so so so sorry to Jeremy for missing out on your birthday in the post. I really ought to include a compulsory birthday clause for all the Tuesday celebrants so far. A very happy birthday nonetheless!

Don't mention it. Thank you all for the birthday wishes. I have had an excellent day. Buffet lunch (classy choice I made there) and then 3 games of ten pin bowling. I haven't bowled in years so of course I sucked, but I had so much fun!

In academia, it still does mean that. They might have been moaning that that was the formal term for one while I was studying (probably because there is no such thing as a vodeo or iVod), but strangely nobody seemed inclined to do the obvious i.e. come up with a better academic name for the concept!

  • me08/06/2010 at 13:30

am going to go out on a limb and suggest either:

    a) podcast

    b) video podcast

given that podcast doesn't specify that it's an audio show, and there's no such thing as an audiocast, why complicate things?

  • RubberGoat08/06/2010 at 13:31

am going to go out on a limb and suggest either:

    a) podcast

    b) video podcast

given that podcast doesn't specify that it's an audio show, and there's no such thing as an audiocast, why complicate things?

Indeed. If video+podcast = vodcast, then by that logic audio+podcast = aodcast. Craziness.

  • me08/06/2010 at 13:33

Indeed. If video+podcast = vodcast, then by that logic audio+podcast = aodcast. Craziness.

agreed. and if your video is hosted on a video sharing network and isn't a syndication show, downloadable to anything. then it's:

    a) a video

  • RubberGoat08/06/2010 at 13:35

When have we known the Castrol rankings to be accurate and truthful though? They just claim to be, that's all.

I note that Rubens Barrichello is still better than Alonso BTW...

Apparently so. And Lewis is better than Jenson somehow?

Jenson did have a lower key 2nd half season last year, while Lewis was on the rise. I can't remember who had more podiums though, or over the first half of this year tbh.

great! I only use Photoshop... How is it different?

best way to think of it - it's a workflow tool, which is designed to help you organise, select and optimise photographs.

final tweaking still needs to be done in photoshop, but lightroom is the best way of managing thousands of pics from a single shoot, and applying similar corrections to all of them.

kind of like flickr on you desktop, in terms of organisation, searching and metadata. but you get to colour correct, crop and tweak too.

this pic was edited solely in lightroom 2: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sidepodcast/4675049805/

That'll be awesome. I may have to watch that one if there's time. Which there won't be.

he doesn't work for a media outlet with a big enough audience to qualify. he did say though in bahrain he'd would be back for one or two races. i think he hinted at the last race of the year, not sure.

The places where you can go are determined by the chip in them...

Some have access all areas (Bernies)... the paddock passes don't get you into the hospitality area of Paddock Club so you generally need two passes if you go to both...

Some passes will have media rights...

Bernie's security guys keep an eye at all the electronic turnstiles...

He should do really well based on his Sebring experience. 24 is a different thing though. Hopefully they'll get a 'petrol class' podium.. There's an Autosport.com feature on him that went up today, I've yet to read.

  • Alianora La Canta08/06/2010 at 20:37

    are they transferrable? they have pictures on them. {Comment #360}

Yes and no. Entities entitled to take people are allowed to bring X number of people each. All of them have to have their own pass. An entity can decide to take Person A instead of Person B, but only if Person B has a pass of the correct type. To get such a pass, Person A would have to prove it was needed. If the call comes at short notice, it may not be possible to get the beauracracy moving fast enough to get it issued.

You will notice that all the people who are replacing Ant have a pass issued by another source - Maurice because he's a journalist (I'm trying to remember if he's freelance or whether a paper would be bringing him at this time) and the others, being F1 reserve drivers or technical geniuses, are entitled to passes through their respective teams. I don't know whether this indicates a lack of organisation or resourcefulness on 5 Live's part.

    thank you thank you thank you thank you! {Comment #465}

    Seconded with much relief!

  • Pat W08/06/2010 at 21:35

I think downshifting will be over soon. We now have sidepodchats, rumoured podcasts from Brackley and live commenting 27 different sports. I foresee a Leo like network based on live commenting sports and podcasts that result from them

They need to register sportscommenting.com and adapt the doohickey and LCLT. Could be big.

  • Steven Roy08/06/2010 at 21:35

a lot depends on how interesting f1 is though. past two weeks have been interesting, we'll have to see how the season goes.

Or Le Mans, or the world series that is evolving from it, or IRL or tennis etc

  • Pat W08/06/2010 at 21:35

exactly mr c - this is sidepodcast, not sidefootcast!!

    (my work here is done)

Offsidepodcast, someone said last week :)

  • lou08/06/2010 at 21:35

    :)

how about tennis? i hear that can be interesting ;)

  • Pat W08/06/2010 at 21:36

    RG and Lukeh would.

  • me08/06/2010 at 21:36

    RG and Lukeh would.

    they would too

  • me08/06/2010 at 21:36

    annoyingly catchy!

  • lou08/06/2010 at 21:37

    RG and Lukeh would.

just as long as Lukeh didn't expect me to listen to it that would be fine ;)

  • me08/06/2010 at 21:39

Or Le Mans, or the world series that is evolving from it, or IRL or tennis etc

i hear ya. i think though that playing with new stuff, like i did today ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/sidepodcast/4682011375/ ), gets shoved aside when there's too much content generation.

research and development was non-existent between say jan and march this year.

  • Christine08/06/2010 at 21:43

i hear ya. i think though that playing with new stuff, like i did today ( http://www.fli...depodcast/4682011375/ ), gets shoved aside when there's too much content generation.

Thing is, though, we made all that content so you could play with new stuff. It was just technical stuff not web stuff. Now we've changed focus, and will probably change again at some point. You're already scaring me with your iPad talk. It's just the way we are, flighty and fickle and open to anything, and we've always said that was the case!

  • Steven Roy08/06/2010 at 21:43

I love that Tom Merritt and Becky Worley start their pre-show warm up discussions by talking about the stories they won't be discussing.

    You want another one already.

    two more

  • Christine08/06/2010 at 21:45

I read that as panda tethering rather than camera tethering. Is tethering pandas legal?

I got an update from my panda adoption thing, and apparently the pandas keep wandering off and they have to tempt them back to the safe habitat with tasty bamboo.

    Perhaps they should try tethering.

  • me08/06/2010 at 21:45

I read that as panda tethering rather than camera tethering. Is tethering pandas legal?

sure. zoo's do it to ensure christine doesn't walk off with them.

ahh, not yet. i really must do that.

research and development was non-existent between say jan and march this year.

i totally get why you needed to change your focus. doing the same thing for ages when the subject your covering gets dull is not a nice way to spend your free time. Sometimes you just need to play with new stuff and spend time being totally creative. Being creative is awesome. :)

What can you do with an iPad that is so special then?

  • me08/06/2010 at 21:48

    what did becky do btw?

@leolaporte sorry for interrupting your show- learning

  • lou08/06/2010 at 21:49

ahh, not yet. i really must do that.

it's amazing. i watched it today and it was awesome! very well made, and Stirling was as usual brilliant! :) he said something about how when he had to stop racing he felt lost, which made me sad... I'm very excited that he's coming to goodwood this year! :)

  • Steven Roy08/06/2010 at 21:50

    what did becky do btw?

@leolaporte sorry for interrupting your show- learning

She skyped into the studio and straight on to skypasaurus wiping out Amber Mac who was recording Net @ night at the time

  • me08/06/2010 at 21:50

What can you do with an iPad that is so special then?

firstly (and christine, you started this), it's silent. so i was using it during sidepodchat, and the mics don't pick up typing, or scrolling like on a mouse or keyboard.

you can hold it up and flip it over to show the camera stuff and christine and i can pass it back and forth.

  • me08/06/2010 at 21:50

She skyped into the studio and straight on to skypasaurus wiping out Amber Mac who was recording Net @ night at the time

also, it's light enough to mount on velcro. so we could do that thing giggles suggested years ago. have him on a screen in the background, velcroed to the wall.

I thought the way they interacted with each other was great and the way Stirling analysed Hammond's crash was facinating. Moss got back nto a car way too quickly after his accident.

He actually did a season or two in the BTCC for Audi in the 80s

  • Christine08/06/2010 at 21:52

When I read silent I thought fan because that was the biggest problem you seemed to complain about before

  • lou08/06/2010 at 21:53

i think barcelona summed it up nicely, ten laps in and there were other more interesting things to be doing. i can see that happening in valencia too

I think starting the season in Bahrain with a rubbish race got the season off to a flat start. I think i started reading at one point during Barcelona.. i can't even remember what happened, i'm guessing a red bull won... I think the only thing that will keep me interested in Valencia is knowing i actually went there, stood on the track and on the podium! :) i think each lap i'll be thinking 'i've been there..' :D

  • me08/06/2010 at 21:53

When I read silent I thought fan because that was the biggest problem you seemed to complain about before

the eepc's solved that, so i can't credit the ipad with doing it better.

You learn alot about Moss's character and personality actually. It also covers a second side to brain recovery, which is what one of our A2 psychology units is based around. very interesting, i've already had a chat with my teacher about it and she thinks it's fascinating! so in a way i was actually revising! :)

ahh, poor timing, it would fit in just before the start of the race too.

It would slot in nicely between the Le Mans finish (2pm) and the F1 (what is the BBC time, 5?).

There is a World Cup game at 3 but it is only Serbia vs Ghana, you'll be hard pushed to find any takers to watch that.

  • lou08/06/2010 at 22:05

    want? no. i said need.

you need three?.. so when they bring out ipad 2.. can i have one of the old ones? ;)

i totally should have had a blog. I defended and loved them until and past their dying day... and well.. i got nothing. (except a JB signed postcard thing)..

you openly dislike them and they invite you to go posh camping with them and meet crofty.. sit meters away from Jenson and Rubens and provide a free bar.

    not.fair

you gotta blog more often. good things come to those who blog.

  • lou08/06/2010 at 22:39

aren't you a few years late for that?

apparently so. although all of my merchandise i own is from teams that no longer exist.... it would feel wrong buying a mclaren t-shirt now.. and i'm not sure i would have the heart to.

I bought a Honda t-shirt and a few weeks later they pulled out...

I bought a Brawn t-shirt and a few months later Mercedes bought them out. I not fond of Mclaren but i don't want them to leave! ;)

  • me08/06/2010 at 22:39

it was a strange way of saying thank you, i'll grant you. but i doubt they knew much about us really. we were with usp content, who should get all the credit.

Stupid thing is i was just about to buy a domain for a brawn gp blog thing following them this season when Jenson signed with Mclaren.
