2 years ago, I loved the Canadian Grand Prix. I really do not know why, I mean Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld scored BMW Sauber's first ever win and 1-2, while Timo Glock scored his highest finish at the time in fourth. I just can't think why that was awesome. And so, F1 returns to the land of Ice Hockey and Maple Syrup after a years break. But, that comes later on in the week. In fact, I had no real reason to bring it up for a rather miserable Monday, but its cheered me up. Good times, onto the bulletpoints:

  • For the last one and a half years, Wetpaint has served as a good host for the Sidepodcast Wiki. But due to the poor navigation and lack of being like a wiki, the Wiki can now be found over at Wikia. Already, going by the Dictionary page, it looks bloomin awesome.
  • As well as the Wiki, there have been a few awesome posts going up on Sidepodcast as well. Tweets of the Week is back! (formally hosted on F1 Minute of course). Also, the About page is getting a facelift. It now includes info on the presenters, the history and apparantly the housewives favourite, Alex Andronov.
  • Gavin popped off to the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen to watch the Speedway Grand Prix (the greatest spectacle on earth, sorta). He took some pics of what he could see, but sadly, none of my new favourite person Tai Woffinden. Who.is.awesome. I've probably confused you right now, so I'll swiftly move on.
  • Early in the morning, and I mean early, earlier than Australia GP early, a group of us watched the IndyCars from Texas. I won't lie, I enjoyed it. Overtaking, drama and a bloke called Ryan winning (which always is a bonus). You can relive the experience if you want, or watch the main talking point which was a scary moment involving Simona de Silvestro.

So thats all for this week, apparantly there is this, World Cup thing coming up on Friday. Don't know if you've noticed that recently. For me, I have a ton of exams coming up as well, 4 in 3 days starting on Tuesday. So I might not be around too much during the week, but I'll be here on Friday, don't you worry.

Have a nice Monday.

Brilliant news that the wiki has moved to Wikia, I used to be head sysop over at the F1 Wiki until I ran out of time to do it. Now no one edits it, and it looks a bit rubbish. :(

  • Lady Snowcat07/06/2010 at 06:38

    To mirror the opening post...

2 years ago I hated the Canadian Grand Prix...

A certain Brit derailed a win for Kimi and marked the point where 2008 became a bad year....

This year I will be there as a rather disinterested observer and I can only hope that something exciting enlivens the affair... not a crash but perhaps a spot of fisticuffs in the paddock?...

Much as I'd like it to be between Alfonso and Felipe, Mark and Seb and Jense and Lewis I think that the biggest likelihood is....

    Vijay and Mike?...

    Odds anyone?....

  • RubberGoat07/06/2010 at 06:43

A certain Brit derailed a win for Kimi and marked the point where 2008 became a bad year....

Yeah, a very strategic decision on who to crash into when he didn't see the light... but it wasn't just Canada where Kimi went off - Monaco, Canada, France were all races where a slight mistake (only one by him) and all was lost :(

  • RubberGoat07/06/2010 at 06:51

    Morning,

I didn't get any pics of Tai Woffinden because I had no idea he was your man #sorryRG :(

And Spa was the kicker. I was cheering for Kimi to win that because I knew if he did, he had a shot at the WDC...

I find this interesting. I would have thought he would be looking around considering his talent and the fact the team seem set against him. Maybe this partly explains the silence after Turkey.

However, this is great for Red Bull as there's no chance of him going rogue and not following team orders on the basis of him leaving at the end of the year...

I guess Alonso learned that lesson in 2007?

Difference is in 2007/8 there were two top teams McLaren and Ferrari. With 4 teams at the top there is a few more options. It seems though, that Nico Rosberg isn't definate for Mercedes next year yet.

So there are 8 prime slots available - I think at least two will be different next year, with Webber, Massa, Schumi prime candidates...

Indeed and at the moment neither Renault driver is confirmed for next year.

I guess you can't have two MEGA silly seasons in a row. :D

As for Buemi... I'm not convinced. Going by the current pace, Jaime/Tim has a better chance of getting that seat.

Can anyone here do that? It's a bit of a silly idea as you don't see that much...

People tried at the race last year and you would see them spreadeagled by 7am the next morning. No more race for them!

Last year for me, I got up at 7 to watch the warmup and scope out a good spot - did tons of walking (about 10km the first day I think) so by midnight I was really tired.

On sunday I did the same so I was pretty beat after the race!

I have the opposite problem with your podcasts as I listen to the ones I transcribe in half speed, and then I listen to them again at full speed just to make sure I didn't miss anything. At normal speed it sounds like everyone is very excited and talking very fast. Speaking of which, someone at work said to me today "did you know whenever you talk about the Grand Prix you start talking really fast?" :D :D

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2010 at 15:03

bassano - you heading to joe next month?

    Ooh, fabulous!

  • Bassano07/06/2010 at 15:14

bassano - you heading to joe next month?

    Huh?

    Silverstone, don't think so?

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2010 at 15:15

fair enough- anyone else heading to it?

  • Bassano07/06/2010 at 15:20

fair enough- anyone else heading to it?

If I were doing the Grand Prix, I would

Am hoping he'll do Spa, on current form, he should do

  • me07/06/2010 at 15:21

fair enough- anyone else heading to it?

yes, us. i think. we'll get tickets this evening.

  • Pat W07/06/2010 at 15:23

fair enough- anyone else heading to it?

I can't make Joe and Goodwood, and I've picked Goodwood (hoping he does Spa)... Hopefully we'll see a good contingent there though?

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2010 at 15:25

yes, us. i think. we'll get tickets this evening.

Aye - thinking of getting a train up and coming back to London after afterwards. Unfortunately I won't be doing the GP itself

which says a lot about f1 this year. we will travel to two race tracks this year, on the same day that racing is happening. but never pay to pass through the gates.

    crazy.

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2010 at 15:28

    us neither.

Something to do with being priced out of it. Heard raceday in Turkey did OK numbers on Sunday once they slashed ticket prices

  • me07/06/2010 at 15:29

Something to do with being priced out of it. Heard raceday in Turkey did OK numbers on Sunday once they slashed ticket prices

it doesn't represent value for money.

it doesn't represent value for money.

    ...or sanity

  • Pat W07/06/2010 at 15:30

it doesn't represent value for money.

Silverstone tried to do something about it by putting the cars in view twice, at least in a couple of places anyway. Seems a bit backwards to me.

  • lou07/06/2010 at 15:31

yes, us. i think. we'll get tickets this evening.

Aye - thinking of getting a train up and coming back to London after afterwards. Unfortunately I won't be doing the GP itself

based on how late the last one finished i'm thinking i wont make it back from the venue to London in time for my last train :( bad times.

  • Bassano07/06/2010 at 15:32

Aye - thinking of getting a train up and coming back to London after afterwards. Unfortunately I won't be doing the GP itself

What time is the 'audience'? I might consider it...

based on how late the last one finished i'm thinking i wont make it back from the venue to London in time for my last train :( bad times.

    :(

Yeah - the last train will get me back in London about 1am - it'll be late, but then again I'm used to that

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2010 at 15:32

    7-11pm

Yeah - the last train will get me back in London about 1am - it'll be late, but then again I'm used to that

I'm ok with that. Getting on the last train has always been my issue ;)

  • lou07/06/2010 at 15:33

    :(

Yeah - the last train will get me back in London about 1am - it'll be late, but then again I'm used to that

1am is an hour after my last train. bad times. i shall see Joe another time hopefully. he's too awesome. :)

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2010 at 15:35

I'm ok with that. Getting on the last train has always been my issue ;)

    :)

I'll be sober, so I'll survive. The venue is about 5 miles from Milton Keynes Central station and the last train is about 11.45, so there should be enough time

  • me07/06/2010 at 15:35

Silverstone tried to do something about it by putting the cars in view twice, at least in a couple of places anyway. Seems a bit backwards to me.

i can see that, but i'm not sure it makes a difference. the price is too high for a day out. even if it were an oval, it wouldn't make me pay.

  • Bassano07/06/2010 at 15:36

True.. and my bank balance has been in pain for ages after paying for the Spa ticket (though not entirely due to that). If it were somewhere other than Spa I probably wouldn't be going.

    What do you need from me? {Comment #433}

If I'm doing the combining at my end rather than yours (I don't think we ever got round to deciding that), I could do with the information about the teams and drivers which don't do Le Mans Series (mostly they're in the American Le Mans Series, which I haven't got into yet). Otherwise I need to hurry up and get this done before I manage to distract myself (I've got at least 2 hours of good thinking energy left today, so this is a good time for me to be doing stuff).

  • Pat W07/06/2010 at 21:16

    booo. plans for tonight?

Boring day at work is all (and a boss that is increasingly frustrating).

So I did my game results but I'm a bit bored of that too :) Did that while watching the 2009 GP2 Monaco, which wasn't spectacular but I'm too stubborn to stop a race once I've got halfway in..

Couple of episodes of The Wire coming up in a while.

    don't kill yourself over it alia, really wasn't meant to be hassle. {Comment #435}

It's not hassle. My lack of organisation skills is hassle and I need to fix that quick (by Thursday at the latest because I've got an interview for a job that will require some). If I've got to fix it by Thursday, I might as well get my act together now...

Couple of episodes of The Wire coming up in a while.

    Series 2 any good?

  • Pat W07/06/2010 at 21:24

If I'm doing the combining at my end rather than yours (I don't think we ever got round to deciding that), I could do with the information about the teams and drivers which don't do Le Mans Series (mostly they're in the American Le Mans Series, which I haven't got into yet). Otherwise I need to hurry up and get this done before I manage to distract myself (I've got at least 2 hours of good thinking energy left today, so this is a good time for me to be doing stuff).

I don't think there's many from the ALMS we'll need to worry about, very depleted field this year. Highcroft in LMP2 and the Corvettes and Risi Ferrari in GT2.

So if you do those and I send the LMS ones (with gaps for the non-LMS ones because that's how the document I did is formatted) over to you tonight, then that should be all the profiles done for tonight, which should help matters.

  • Alianora La Canta07/06/2010 at 21:26

Or at least all the ones that are going to matter ;)

I'm on 6 of 12 and there was a lot of setting-up, it is getting going now though. I like it, find it interesting and I like that it isn't the usual 22-24 for a US series. Bit hard to follow with all the slang though but worth sticking with it.

    Okay no problem.

I think for SPC all we need to really think about are Audi, Peugeot, Mansell (won't be in contention but he's Nige!), Rebellion, Aston Martin.

Then maybe a paragraph on the other classes.

I want to be careful that it isn't too long, I found with the Indy 500 post that it made Doohickey thread switching a problem.

  • Pat W07/06/2010 at 21:34

Then maybe a paragraph on the other classes.

Or maybe two on each. Or a line per car. We'll have to see what works.

Bearing in mind we also have to explain qualifying..

  • Lukeh07/06/2010 at 22:53

Please remind me why we need a 20-race calender?

Because bernie wants to go loco down in aca pulco

Coming soon - the Aca pulco GP

  • Amy07/06/2010 at 22:53

Ah well, shorter weekend = less to blog about which means I might actually manage to write about it :D

  • me07/06/2010 at 22:54

Please remind me why we need a 20-race calender?

i'm 100% against it. but we want to race on brilliant tracks like canada and spa, while bernie wants the money from bahrain and abu dhabi.

  • lou07/06/2010 at 22:54

bernie has more races than there are room for.

    but.. that shouldn't happen.

Where? Korea's probably going to get cancelled due to the war bubbling over, last I heard China was about to lose its race and that's based on a calender that's already only got 19 races. Even with India joining in, that's still only 18 races for 2010 and 20 only arriving in 2013 when the US and Vatican Grands Prix are in (assuming all other races keep their contracts).

Maybe Bernie got a hold of the Twit GP from Moto GP the other week and is looking for a country called Twit.

That or we're going to have a Top Gear race on the Ejurjonsigoogle Volcano in Iceland...

korea isn't going to vanish though. worst case it'll be delayed a year.

china is in for the long haul aren't they? and then there's russia. they are more too. lemmie think.

  • Joe in Fla07/06/2010 at 22:58

Speaking of new races, I hope Austin just copies the A-1 ring, I loved that track. I cringed when I heard they were talking to Tilke to design

  • lou07/06/2010 at 22:58

    money talks and bernie walks.

bernie is silly. the races are great.. but Fp fridays are awesome too! the thought of only 2 days in monaco rather than 3 days of track events makes me sad..

why did they have to mess with the old system. f1 seemed okay when i started following it... no silly abu dhabi gp.. a canadian gp, 1 spanish gp.. heck there was even mid season testing at silverstone! it was good times! (except the honda bit.. that was bad times)..

I only found out the other day Tilke designed the A1 Ring. Stunned I was.

i agree on all counts. i think the answer is "money".

If Korea starts fighting properly, there's no telling when or if the country will be in a condition to host the race. Nobody knows the true strength of the respective militaries and both have a superpower in their corner.

Where did you read China was in for the long haul? As for Russia, they're on at least attempt 4 at hosting a race - I refuse to assume their presence until they have a calender spot.

  • lou07/06/2010 at 23:00

the track is sinking.. they can't turn up to find there is no track. mother nature says no to a chinese gp! ;)

  • me07/06/2010 at 23:01

    didn't know that.

  • Lukeh07/06/2010 at 23:01

I was gobsmacked when I found out. I thought his first f1 track was Malaysia.

A1 Ring is really very good too.

money sucks!! everything was fine and dandy in 2006, we had tyre wars, Alonso showing Schumi up, Jenson won, no THAT woman... a nice calender, Ant driving, SPC starting.. it was a good year for f1.

Bernie says he can't have a contract for more than 5 years. Well he has a contract with at least one of his other circuits that is substantially longer than that, which tends to refute his statement.

oh i see. at the moment though, he has a rather full calendar for 2011. which is why i'm assuming there comes the need for shorter weekends.

It's not full if China's not there (or Korea, but as you said we need to see if they're even fighting at that time of the year), and Bernie's words have only convinced me it won't be - when he speaks nonsense reassurance, it's usually because he wants us to feel something about a situation we should be thinking the opposite about.

  • me07/06/2010 at 23:17

It's not full if China's not there

well no that is true. but it's also not full is silverstone isn't there. it's not full if monza isn't there. but that's a silly argument isn't it? at the moment, we have no information to suggest either way and seeing as bernie hasn't said no, we assume it still is. no?

  • Alianora La Canta07/06/2010 at 23:19

    but it's also not full is silverstone isn't there. it's not full if monza isn't there. but that's a silly argument isn't it? {Comment #611}

It's not silly because the way Bernie's talking and the lack of contract China has at the moment suggests there's a very real chance it won't be on the calender. Removing Silverstone or Monza would take either some spectacular force majuere or some serious contract-breaking.

  • me07/06/2010 at 23:21

i see. well your definition of a not-full calendar is different from mine then :)

in the meantime, it would appear that discussions about reducing the length of an f1 weekend are ongoing. which is likely only a necessary action if the calendar is extended unfavourably in length.
