Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Pinky?
Good morning, afternoon and evening whatever time of the day it may be and hello from another Friday. I still can't believe it's April but we're getting ready for the second race of the 2011 Formula 1 season with Sepang hosting the Malaysian Grand Prix this weekend. Can you believe the track has technically been in Formula 1 for 3 decades now? It still feels like a new race to me! If you kindly point yourselves towards the Race Information thread Christine has compiled all the info you need to make sure you're all swotted up on this weekend's race. Remember, Free Practise 1 and 2 take place in the early hours of today so if you want to silly o'clock it up, then we'll be here commenting as ever. Onwards to the links!
Paddock News
Well I blame Mr Motivator for the flexing - He's had enough. His quiff has snapped and he's unleashing his red bull fury. Christian Horner has told his rivals to just STOP. - no, it is not hammer time, and yes, that grolsch is now ready. But he is saying stop because he's a bit fed up of his rivals saying the front wing of the Red Bull is still flexing. So what, it like's to exercise right? Maybe the other cars are just plain lazy. That's definitely it.
Back in Brack...ley - Those lovely, lovely people in Brackley that were formerly known as Honda and Brawn have decided to give HRT a bit of a helping hand by giving them access to one of the spare wind tunnels the team has which is nice of them. Joe says that HRT are hoping for a better weekend than Australia with is like saying I hope this teapot will not melt now it is not made of chocolate. In all fairness though, I thought HRT did alright considering the mess they turned up in and Liuzzi did his best to get the most out of car totally not ready. Surely the only way is up, right?
Elsewhere...
Jenson and Lewis, Dressed to Impress I Guess - Finally, the Hugo Boss competition to create a funky little race suit for various Grand Prix around the world has launched in the UK and you can get the chance to win a really awesome trip to Silverstone for the race and paddock access and a hotel and everything! Awesome! Of course Lou did come 3rd a few years ago in Jenson's helmet competition for Silverstone... perhaps this is an omen... also I should say there are various races the competition applies to but this is in regards to the British Grand Prix competition launching yesterday. Woo!
He didn't see Pele, he was having a go at NASCAR - Kimi-mania is running wild in NASCAR now as he's actually gone and done those tests for Kyle Busch Motorsports in preperation for his five race debut coming later this year. I still find the idea of Kimi in NASCAR absolutely mental, it just seems very random to me but fair play to the Iciest of all Ice Men for finding more icing to go on his already icy cake of his that he probably bought from Iceland.
Bathurst has never looked so highly defined! - The genius that is Mr C found this excellent little video yesterday of Jenson's lap around Bathurst that was so highly publicised last week filmed with an onboard HD camera and my word does it look lovely. And it's only a diddy little camera too! Even more amusing was Janna's discovery for Mr C that can come in perfectly for future Sidepodparties...
Well you could press Ctrl+S but... that's so Windows... - Thought this was an interesting little discussion about the save icon we're all so used to of a floppy disk. It's never really occured to me before I read this but now I can't help but wonder... why is it still such an out dated piece of technology? I mean, I know it's just an icon but I suppose it really does show how iconic something can be with making us know what it means. Whenever I see a floppy disk icon it automatically stands out as how to save something for me, on computers, games, whatever. Interesting little train of thought though.
And Finally
Perhaps Roadie #42 is the real answer to Life, the Universe and Everything - Over the past few months I've kept an eye on the updates from Coldplay's Roadie #42 and I thought I'd post the update that he so kindly provided this week on the progress of Coldplay's album scheduled to be released later this year. I love little updates like this with bands just giving a greater deal of what's happening and the big picture (did someone say Big Picture?) of their album work. Plus I like Coldplay, and so does David Tennant, so they're cool no matter what anyone says!
Well I'm done for the day chaps and chapettes, but hurrah for another F1 weekend! I'm also gonna work on my latest Forza 3 creation and hopefully get back to you all soon. To end this week I thought I'd go for something summery and just something to chill out to and well, it still links to F1 as if you've played F1 2010 you'll have definitely heard the Unkle mix of F.E.A.R by Ian Brown so here it is again, just such a fantastic little tune. Hope you all enjoy the F1 and have another lovely day of sunshine and summer-approaching gloriousness!
g'mornin new daily post.
"Finally, the Hugo Boss competition to create a funky little race suit for various Grand Prix around the world has launched in the UK "
i love it when you choose jenson!!
Hi Friday.
I'm going to get an early night because I've been up late often recently and if I'm catching some of FP2 I need to wake up early. Also I'm cold and my bed is warm. Night..
oh, game players please don't forget:

@beaks_the_twitt: morning all. practice day at project KL. team HK / Smith not driving until P2, hope the rookie doesn't 'do a chandook'...
points for lotus :)
Which rookie? Razia?
valsecchi.
Morning :)
I'm so confuzzled. I was fast asleep but Nick woke me up....
Valsecchi? I thought was the third driver?
Why did he do that?
dunno, mike tweeted it a couple of weeks ago: https://twitter.com/#!/MikeGascoyne/status/50732634195755008
Karun Chandhok to drive here for us in P1. Davide Valsecchi will make his debut in F1 in P1 in Malaysia
Chandhok is the reserve
Razia is the third driver
Valsecchi is a test driver.
I wonder if they are planning on giving all of their 5 a side team a drive this season
:)
could well be. can't think with such limited running that's a very good idea mind you.
Doesn't seem a lot of point to it. I can only assume that the drivers are being given a couple of runs in return for sponsorship money.
i guess so, but we know karun doesn't have much of that.
I guess they hope that with the Indian GP coming up that Indian companies will get interested in F1 and Chandhok is in the ideal position to pick up some sponsorship
Hola, everyone.
hey chap, what's new?
Mr. C! And a good day to you, sir! I am looking for a shirt that will sport SPC for my 5K and 10K runs to represent.
the world has gone running mad :)
when are the dates?
Not real sure, there's some on my radar screen. Still recuperating for the Marco Island Half Marathon. I'll be back in a couple of weeks
is anyone going to hang around for FP1?
yup, should do. yourself?
I am going to try, but I need to be up at 5:30 so it may be one-eye thing.
Yes, now that SPEEDTV is now live streaming FP1 and FP3. I love it, no commentary, just cars, times and the odd radio transmission
didn't realise there was no commentary.
I guess SPEED Tv can't afford to pay 3 guys in Charlotte NC to act like they're in Malaysia for all sessions
You can get the Beeb feed from questionable sources. There is also another podcast that should be doing a live (audio-video(?)) commentary during FP1 and FP3.
I really like the no commnetary thing, so I can get the info from SPC
:)
Speed can't pay the guys to start 8 minutes early to pick-up the world feed (which usually starts at 7 minutes to, with the swirly logo). THat means that the quali and the race are delayed by 7 minutes or so. At least it was when Speed was available here and not blacked out.
Mr. C, does it normally take a long time to up load pictures. I had a great shot of me at the Hooters Half Marathon
the uploader button on realtime doesn't work sadly. we usually use flickr or twitpic.com.
Now that Joe has stated that his next Audience with... is in lovely (and currently thawing) Montréal.... when can we buy tickets?
normally 2-3 weeks before the event, but hassle him in his comments and he might take reservation sooner.
Bert, I would love to meet up with you again for that with my brother. But my nephew, who, only thinks of himself is getting married that weekend. I offered to fly him and his fiance to Vegas to get married by an Elvis impersonator, but they declined, so I'll miss it.
Arrrrgghhhh!!!!! But you can stream the race to your phone or something, right?
I don't think the soul-moving sound will be the same, plus Dr. Saward will not be there with his tidbits of pit shannanigans
I did love the venue last year in Old Montreal, Rickards Reds and good F1 talk, it was heaven
Okay, off to the lanai for more beer and finish the "Aside". See you at 2200
It was a nice venue... Nice part of town for tourists to see. Thankfully it was breezy, otherwise we would have cooked.
One thing I think Joe could do is record the session and turn it in to a podcast, perhaps as end-of-season filler stuff.
we tried that in london, didn't work out so well. PA companies don't really understand the concept of recording :)
No, you have to hook directly in to the console, which in Montreal seemed a decent setup. If the direct recording could work the only thing left to do is either having a mic for questions, speak the question loud and clearly (which at the end of the evening may be a challenge or the Joe repeat / summarize the question before answering (or avoiding the answer).
true. the other problem you have is joe can't be as open if the talk is being recorded.
Then I take the live show. :-) But then there are all those Formula 1 spies with telephoto lenses, parabolic listening devices and the like.
hehe!

Dunno, didn't see it :P
Oh well...
I had it on in the corner of my computer but unlike during most FP sessions this time I could not avoid working, bummer. so only caught glimpses of action here and there. quite impressed with HRT, disappointed with Lotus.
Red Bull and McLaren look like cars to beat at this stage of the season ...

Morning ladies and gentlemen
Morning Mav
Ah Leigh, just the person
I think we have a problem
Oh..?
I've been eagerly awaiting your article... but then something Jackie just said me go back and reread your email
It was supposed to be attached to it wasn't it? :-D
So I'm giving my niece my ASUS Aspire One Netbook which I Ubuntu'd last year. I made it all pink for her, and tried to remove the annoying password prompt which pops up every 5 minutes. Seems to have disabled the netbook remembering the password to the wifi unless I manually configure it in the Networking option!
Oh and it's in Danish now too. and my nieces are 5 and 8
No, sorry about that. I won't get it finished until tonight.
I was also thinking of splitting it in half and making it a two-parter, but as it's not finished yet, it's not solid.
oh, that's ok... I interpreted it right the first time, Jackie interpreted "I thought I'd send you a guest post" as meaning "here you go, one post"
It's more a case of tidying it up though, so not much left to do with it
two-parter? crumbs... I can only find two pictures!
Ehhhh.... turn one of the pictures upside-down and say he had an accident
:D
do you think anyone would notice if i used a picture of the artist formerly known as... instead?
It'd be a bit odd. Not many electric guitars on the grid - especially in the early 50's
Surprisingly quiet day from Sauber
Amazed Virgin have found a gap to Lotus, will that last through tomorrow?
otherwise, as expected
did a little red corvette ever line-up on an F1 grid?
Should be interesting to see their race pace as opposed to qualifying pace though.
That was interesting. If Lotus are still having tyre warming issues, then it could be a long year for the team.
Only in Hollywood. Elvis won.
I think Hamilton might be right about the pace of the Red Bulls. Surprised to see Christian Horner so vigorously defending his team though.
I guess I shoulda known... By the way you parked your car sideways
Nakajima drove for them right?
Listening to Trackside - early entries for Indy is already up to 35 cars for 33 spots...
Nice
Thought that was de Cesaris
Yamamoto... we could be here all day
A lot of mind games going on between Red Bull and McLaren this year, was all a bit one-way traffic in that sense last year
I do wonder if Horner will go all Kevin Keegan at some point though
oooh that would be fun!
I'd love it if that happened, I'd love it if it did!
grabbing a notebook and starting sketching for the journos suggests he might just grant your wish
What - like long, floppy, mullet-like hair?
any pics of these sketches ?
He should get Jarno Trulli to join Red Bull. They could be journo fighting superheros.
it was Noble's notebook, maybe he posted something on twitter?
I'd love to see how the onboard camera makes it look like the wing moves when it's all just down to rake
Morning. Glorious sunny day with all the smells of the country... and I'm in a little dark box room facing away from the window, tapping away at a computer. I think as this has been a busy week I shall work slowly. :)
morning pat
Treat yourself, it's a lovely day and a Friday, it's only fair :)
Of course then all the idiots come out saying "oh we'll pay for it later with rain". Don't be silly.
Morning
I'm trying to persuade the pair of sparrows outside my window to go and find a hotel room
He hasn't, so I asked him if he will...
Good man
"Thought this was an interesting little discussion about the save icon we're all so used to of a floppy disk."
The rate of development of storage media suggests to me that simply keeping the outdated floppy disk symbol makes more sense
An envelope for email is surely stranger?
I had to send an actual letter this week. Crazy times. Couldn't find a stamp. Didn't know where my nearest post-box was.
Similar experience writing a cheque this week. How do you write a cheque again? How do I do my signature?
I believe you have to go outside and shout for the post person. Or the Mobile Box of Post, I forget their names, they're little red boxes that walk I think.
We do both of these things at work all the time..
I seem to remember from when I was very young that he's called Pat
That is the chap! He has a black and white cat or so rumours suggest
I always thought the cat was just an urban myth, why would he need a cat?
Some say that she actually delivers the post and Pat is just the front for the whole operation. Also that she invented the concept of that horrible licking taste of stamps.
All we know is, they called her Jess.
grr :)
...and you're called Pat...
are you the post person?
We just went to check out the pool. Very pretty. Didnt bring any bathers :(
I have been known to take it from time to time :)
I really do not get this chase for "Likes" and "Followers" ... pathetic ...
Same - I find Facebook generally annoying
i only get it if there is a trip to korea involved :D
i disagree. i like teams and drivers getting into social. more followers likely = more awesome content. hopefully.
well that is the genuine contest and in the whole context of Air Asia marketing it can be understood. but why person a) needs 10,000 followers by the end of weekend and person b) 2000 likes before China GP is beyond me ...
Nick wants to strut down the paddock and the first person who asks him what's up he'll lower his sunglasses, smile and say 'I got 2000 facebook followers' before strutting off again
Normally I 'd agree, but the begging for "likes" on Facebook is a bit like the people that beg for followers on Twitter.
There's very little in that aspect that actually engages fans, it's just building a database for very little in return. Competitions and interaction is quite different from pulling "likes"
I am not against getting social, what I do not like is this number of likes and followers becoming the new religion ...
it's good to have a target i guess. i'm interested purely as to when twitter followers overtakes rss subscribers and then if/when rss subs drop off a cliff. my guess is it'll be all about twitter by the end of the year.
yes, throw in a race helmet like Jorge Lorenzo and I may consider :-)
Boo. I likes my RSS.
tooo slow ;)
Me too. After I visit Sidepodcast the first thing I go through are my rss feeds on google reader!
I agree for normal people but teams and drivers should have loads
Speaking of social media, my like count is now (if i remember rightly) only 33 ahead. Im not going to check it again from now on but will do one last plea for help on Sunday. So if you are saving your like til the end or know someone else who might be able to help out please get onto that :) Whatever happens from here out happens and I dont want to look at it and possibly ruin my weekend. The taxis here are traumatic enough!
So it would be all about the 'now' with nothing held back in an RSS queue for later?
for F1 I use twitter to keep me up to date, but for general news the right side of my rock melt window does great job (and that is RSS more less) ...
Today i had a paddock pass that said vodafone mclaren mercedes guest and i used it to stand outside lotus. If that aint an uber fan then what is :)

Ohh I forgot to mention in the daily, Pat and Mr CD a welsh band called The Joy Formidable are supporting the Manics at the CIA. They're very very good and I'm a little bit worried I may burst from excitement at the gig as the past week or two I've really gotten into them.
#mayhavetoselotapemebacktogether
tweet this at team lotus :-)
*Mr C, even. No match for that Mr DVD
Mr CD!
good question, don't know. that's just the way spc subs are going.
oooh, cool. did you get my email btw?
i did already hahaha. Mabel looked at me and didnt have a flicker of recognition so i think my known by name not by face theory still holds true :)
Yeah I did, cheers. Will let you know soon if anything gets sorted :)
Oh cool must check them out tonight then
:D
perfect.
we need more pictures of you.
Lou showed me a song called Whirring that has been playing on the radio and that kind of blew my brain to smithereens. It's a kind of nice poppy rock song that's really catchy then suddenly turns into what can only be described as an absolute beast, just huuuuge. So, so, so good. They've only brought out one album but it's very good.
They are quite good indeed
there are some of me on my camera, modelling pretty new team lotus hat. Cant get them off with no camera connection ipaddy thing :)
Gascoyne says Lotus is much quicker than it looked this afternoon ... I wonder when will they start being as quick as they say they are... are there any excuses they haven't used yet left ?
i pad has a rubbish camera :)
hehe
They need to hurry up because they've been pretty underwhelming as of yet.
less than 1 megapixel, mmmm 2001 technology
i am sure heikki would have been quicker if his car was actually working :)
BBC have a news article which links to LOLcats: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-12893416

What an elaborate description of lol!
i looked at the duty free price of the hdmi adaptor, shall buy on the way home for 40" f1 timing for china :)
Ironically, I have just spilt apple on my iPhone! :D
Although I have never, ever heard the acronym KMT - Kiss my teeth, apparently
Whhaaa...?
Points for Heikki: http://plixi.com/p/90506221
Twitter seems broken. Must be Friday afternoon then ;)
Sounds promising :)
ehm ehm ... the cars not working seems to be their problem from day 1 ... :-)
The New Mercedes ad is brilliant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRpXqbaSDzE
Points for Merc, and BTW I would pick Schumi, because you just know he would barge through the traffic faster ;)
OK that was brilliant. Another awesome advert! Stop making me like you mercedes :)
Who would you pick, and why? This is almost Friday Fun-worthy!
I would pick Nico but his decision making was very poor in Inception
I can confirm he is pretty good without traffic, but the taxi driver in Switzerland may vouch for him as a good traffic driver too :-)
All I know is that you do NOT argue with a woman during labour, if she'd rather go with Nico...

The spark commentator today is one of air asias social meedia experts. I wonder when theyll have one thats not related to the team in some way
Yeah I thought so - but well worth seeing again :)
you didn't say hello?
no :)
Can someone comment when the 5live podcast is up so i can go a-lobbying?
grr.
i can't complain though, i can't be arsed to ravel in the first place.

i like to see people but never ever approach them :)
Sunday when Rob from GrandPrixDiary does it?
apart from that, hes still not really a random fan, theyre flying him to malaysia
how will they know you're an uberfan who's been to two out of two races?
Well yeah.
many, many, many tweets about watching them. Its the silent passive way

From the top down it's starting to look really, really cool but I won't show that just yet... ;) hopefully sometime tomorrow it'll be done! See you all later!
I worked out today i have no idea how malaysian garage labelling works.
Maldonado and heidfeld aRe missing flags by their names, team lotus have front on instead of sideon helmets like everyone else, alonso has no name above his garage at all, narains name is spelt wrong and mercedes are round the wrong way.
Cooool :)
A well-timed friendly hello is likely to go down well, especially if they're not busy.
Oops!
Bacon flavour McCoy's are like a huge bag of Frazzles :)
When they stop falling to pieces, presumably.
I'm not sure RSS subscribers will ever fall off a cliff, but I suspect you're right about Twitter overtaking - you'll stop getting new sybscribers as people forget about their subscriptions, cease opening their feed readers and silently convert. RSS will only be lost upon individual reinstalls when the subscribers realise they don't use RSS any more, so it'll be more of a gentle stroll down a hill.
Hello everyone... I have been mega busy!
hi alex
For those taking part in the Pole Poll... http://sofaf1.com/2011/04/08/malaysian-pole-poll-4/
I have finally got around to opening it!
Me too. Hi guys
It's hilarious for me to read this and have no idea what you're talking about. :)

Classic Frazzles as loved in childhood (and since!).
New McCoys. Frazzles for grownups.
I admit it doesn't work without the actual crisps or the taste :)
Friend has just arrived, when he gets off the phone I'll ask him why in the world he is wearing a jacket. It's a gorgeous 20 deg C out, at least

Thank you Mr Jobs
hello all. need help
Hey Joe, wassup?
I follow a lot of Americans on Twitter through IndyCar and sportscar blogs etc, if I'm on there after about midnight (7 ET) my feed gradually gets less and less understandable as they are talking about sport or what have you. :)
I run a lot of races and getting tired of running in my FD t-shirt. I am looking for a shirt that, prepare to gag, looks similar to the design of the HRT car. Does anyone know of HRT having shirts, it'll be great since there are no sponsors to muck up the shirt
Well played, sir. I'm at work.
#confidential
num num.
I enjoy it.
Good morning from LA.
Crazy. Amy's likes lead is down to 17. She's leading 261-234. And her net likes-comments score is way down now.
Did you talk about this already?
Yay for F translation! Bless you!
hehe
Only that Amy said she wasnt going to keep an eye on it so it didnt ruin her weekend.
Oh you made it, how is it? :)
Good idea, that. :) But I'm sure we're checking for her anyway. ;)
Schumi looks good this weekend, eh? :D
I have been to the pub this afternoon too. Channelling Bassano.
COLD. By my standards anyway. :) Temp is fine, but when you add wind chill, it just becomes silly cold.
Better, yes, I think good is still to be determined :)
Indeed. Free practice doesn't score points anyhow. Red Bull are scaring ahead though. It's looking like Webber is our only hope to keep this title competitive.
Still early days. McLaren seem even more on pace than last time, and they were good here in '10 too.
Good plan!
True. But Red Bull dominated that race with a car that wasn't as dominant as this year's.
I just cannot wait to be home all weekend, watch racing, and sleep.
Did people see this crazy Muppet Theatre?
http://lancecardinal.blogspot.com/2011/03/scratch-built-palisades-muppet-theatre.html
[hearts]
Brawn had a crazy dominant car and it still wasnt an easy championship to win. Red Bull have the odds in their favour, but it aint over until it's over.
#needstobemorelikeBassano
That's the spirit!
Not to my knowledge, do they have a website?
we all do. :)
Well dang it and heckfire... I'm going to bust outta here... And head outside!
Hi Bassano, everyone. HRT web-site is hispaniaf1team - dot com!
yeah, so many teams have lost it themselves let alone others improving midseason
Ciao
Legitimate links are fine here. In context, of course :)
I'm such a trend setter
Helloooo :)
I've had a nice afternoon OUTSIDE!! :D
Q: If you are looking for a recipe online, what are your search terms, specifically?
Hi
Great stuff
I've also got my P60 and I'm owed a tax refund so it's a very happy Friday :D
That's early! Or did you leave?
Home time for me, cold Guinness in the fridge awaits
No I didn't leave but my last payday of the tax year was 3 weeks ago so they've had a bit of time to get it sorted.
http://t.co/e7ZyOYd
Imagine's Bassano banging the side of the iPhone - trying to adjust the set saying, "it's the wrong colour"
Looks fizzy
#suspicious
In the first half of the season. Red Bull has more money now than Brawn did then, so they will be in better shape.
depends on what the recipe is for.
Give me an example
"fried chicken recipe", "steak and mushrooms recipe", "pasta primavera recipe"
Same here. Thanks
If you're not having joy like that, I'd go onto a recipe website first then search internally on one of those.
I tend to search backwards with the key word at the beginning but that's me :)
Recipie steak and ale pie
In my head "Recipie steak and ale pie" is asking for a recoup to make a steak and ale pie whereas the other is more like the recipie for a particular one like e ingredients.
In the case of recipies the distinction probably doesn't make much difference but because it matters in other things I tend to generally go that way.
It would appear that in this case you get exactly the same results.
In the case of a recipe I actually almost always do this.
Recipe not recoup!
Ahhh do you remember when sidepodcast used to stop you from commenting too quickly?
#nostalgia
..and relax. :)
Is recipie a recipe for a pie?
:)
recipe from Birmingham
:)
Ah that noddy holder joke never gets old!
All that's missing is the outside, my next place needs a balcony or a garden. I have a shared garden in which people in the downstairs flats and anyone parking their car can spy on me.
Didn't fancy the pub on my own today.
Having a specific conversation about google searches for recipes
Should have known you wouldn't be wanting to cook ;)

It's the middle of the night isn't it....

Hello all, I see you're talking about my favourite subject.
On that note, got a text from my friend confirming drinks at hers tonight. Pimms on the balcony :)
Just got to decide whether to take the pink wine or pear cider to follow the Pimms.
Not sure you guys get Chalk Talk this way, but here is ours in the US.
http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/video-malaysian-gp-chalk-talk-2011/
That's a tough call. I'd for the pear, but that's me.
Thanks, just remember that over here all cider is hard ;)
A lot of people like Steve Matchett's chalk talk
Here's my little write up of SidepodBoston for those who missed it so far. I pinged it late at night earlier this week.
Pingly dingly dee: http://solongandthanksforallthefishies.blogspot.com/
oh yes, of course. :)
Have read. Will comment later
I wasn't sure if you could open that link or not, but I like them a lot.
Is that a threat? ;)
Ahh I missed that, thanks
Nope. I was half asleep when I read it so commenting then would have been a bad idea
Listening to Motorsport's podcast with Allan McNish
http://www.motorsportmagazine.co.uk/2011/03/31/aprils-audio-podcast-with-allan-mcnish/
oh thanks, I'll check that out later.
Hah, was about to link to the chalk talk. Good thing I looked back in the comments :)
The new one about the nut and bolt brought back a few memories from my materials engineering classes from a LONG time ago.

Excellent stuff.
Thanks, Pat. It's hard to explain the feeling of being there together and how the weekend was, but I did the best I could.

I've heard there's a taste sensation there somewhere
I've just realised I have forgotten to change my Fantasy Racers choices in time for Malaysia. Oops.
I wonder how out of touch Motorsport are.
Ed Foster in a comment on the McNish podcast asked if anyone would really watch a video of five people talking about racing. We watched someone install a blind in someone else's house.
:D
Trailblazers we are, I tell ya
ummm... haven't they made exactly that?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRcteOLqwho
warning, audio on that video is f.....lipping awful.
He was talking about videoing the one hour podcasts they do with Franchitti, McNish etc. I think he sees a difference between discussing events and just talking. Clearly Twit, CNET etc are not watched by anyone at Motorsport.
I like what they are trying to do with these videos they just need someone technical to make it better.
You're right, the audio is awful.
I never quite understood the need for video when all it is is talking heads. If you're not goign to show me anything visual, I don't need stupid video.
I think video can help in some of podcasts. They help you get to know people and you can see some of the interraction between them that you just don't get from audio
i can't imagine us ever putting something so low quality out.
i said at the beginning of the year that the internet had exposed everyone in f1 as people just like us. i said i even thought sidepodcast was better at certain things than others, but i never expected quite a direct example.
on a shelf in shop, motorsport magazine looks like a professional product and you could imagine it being put together in plush offices, by professional people. that video makes them look like little more than clueless amateurs, it's devaluing their brand massively.
Internet output gets a lot of stick even when it's unjustified. Today, you need to produce professional quality media to be taken seriously when kids at home are doing so much better.
Must try harder but keep trying, is the message I suppose
you get the impression that it must be quite hard for them to make, or they'd just do it again better.
They just don't have any background in video/audio. The good thing is they are trying which many others are not. The quality could be so much better.
I keep telling you that you two just don't understand how good your product is or what it could be worth. I meant to say that I put a comment on Amy's facebook thing saying Air Asia should sponsor sidepodcast and Another F1 podcast and Air Asia liked that comment.
Motorsport was such a traditional backward publication until very recently. If someone had told me two years ago that they would have been trying to put out stuff like that I would have laughed.
Video is hard to make - much harder than audio. The one (disastrous) attempt I made it at showed me that much. Remember that some of these professional outlets struggle to make a serviceable podcast...
I think they are a fairly small group of people who are not tech savvy
nah, that's easy. if you have the space and the people there's no effort at all.
Hire someone or ask around
F1 is full of tech people
Cluelessness is abound :(
agreed.
I beg to differ - unless you need a lot more space than just the one room or you mean the people have to have video recording training (which, certainly if you live where I do, is pretty difficult to acquire).
You say that but if anyone goes near the archive Christine freaks out because the quality is not as good as now. You have been through the learning curve
Costs money
hehe. they would be a good match for an aside with joe. christine and i don't travel anywhere!
yes, but we didn't/don't have a professional brand to wreck.
I think Amy would volunteer for any travelling
Sidepodcast, brought to you by AirAsia. You go fly with them so we don't have to.
You do. You just don't realise it. If you don't believe me stick put a poor quality podcast
Motorsport doesn't exactly have an amateur arm to practise on...
okay, but we didn't when we were learning.
I like that. Has a ring to it.
they don't HAVE to put out everything they record either. practice until it's right. no?
:D
Or "AirAsia: The only way to get a better experience of F1 than listening to Sidepodcast"
But that is due to your background. You probably knew more about this before you started than they will in a year's time
How do they know if it's right by the definitions of the audience until the audience have heard it? Remember everyone has a different definition of "right".
I would rather they put out what they are putting out. The quality may not be great but there is value to the content
If it sucks, give it to your mum to listen to... Don't broadcast it!
:D
So does a bad product, more so in fact
fair enough. to me, it's like seeing behind the curtain, and it has lowered my opinion greatly (along with the podcast).
What if your mum avoids all podcasts because they're off the internet? Seriously, the best way to learn is by getting an audience, listening to it and acting on it. Of course, the smaller and more honest that audience is in the first instance, the better, but there comes a point where one runs out of ideas on how to improve the product without that feedback loop being established.
agreed.
I doubt anyone would cancel the mag because the video is bad
I'd volunteer to 'meet the foreigners' :D
and if your sales plummet?
Hmmm if you think you're buying a professional product and then you see the goons that are producing it, it might stop me renewing a subscription....
Very, very unlikely. Of all the motorsports magazines out there, Motorsport has the least connection (that I know of) between its core print product and its website.
i can't take them seriously anymore. i wasn't a subscriber because the content didn't interest me, but two years ago, i did at least respect them.
Unless they carry on at that level
especially when you realise they're all in the uk when a grand prix is on. does no-one from that mag need to be in malaysia?
I have been reading Nigel Roebuck since the 1970s. I am not going to change my opinion because the video is dodgy
Agreed
That should be named, The James Allen curve :D
The specialism of the magazine is F1 through the lens of historical perspective. You can be anywhere in the world to do that provided it has a decent internet connection.
hehehe. i just to respect him when he was a pitlane analyst :)
:D
I think you can distinguish between different products produced by the same people. Just because a video is bad doesn't mean their written articles are bad.
what are they talking about in the video? not 1970's f1.
but it does mean their perception of quality is much lower than i would hope. maybe their benchmark for quality articles is equally low?
And then he tried narrated video
I don't see why, that's not their specialism, or it wasn't when I bought one a while ago. They aren't F1 Racing.
nah, i hated him for being a commentator and ruining years of f1.
They are reviewing all sorts of things including Moto GP. I don't think you need to go to all the events to do that
They're looking at it with the lens of 1970s F1 and the intervening times. They don't need to say they are because it's in the angles they chase. You won't catch Motorsport interviewing newbies any time soon - they want people who have been in there long enough to understand that lens of experience and expect answers that implicitly demonstrate the interview subject has a memory longer than a week last Wednesday.
Why would it be? Their benchmark for quality articles is very high. They are still working on the video and audio and haven't found their benchmarks yet. They are writers not producers.
just me then. if you're prepared to put out that crappy video, you're prepared to put out any old crap in print too.
There was no need to bring that up again. I had almost forgotten that
Oh wait a second, is it a day with a Y in it? Must be about time Mr C had an argument.
No. It means their production standards for a particular medium are low. Not only does it say nothing about their print production standards, but it says nothing whatsoever about the content quality standards (for either medium, unless you spotted some factual errors in the podcast or something).
I think opinions on quality can change very quickly. Mine certainly can. For example I used to read the Independent newspaper pretty regularly until I read a lead article about a topic I knew a lot about already. I could never read it again after that.
hehe, i must do something more creative (and actually listenable).
I'd give it a second go, if that was the same, I wouldn't again
Treating a live race as narrated video probably didn't help his cause...
Sounds like you've never bought a copy of Motor Sport.
I think that is unfair. THey are like a lot of businesses in all sorts of fields. They are very good at one thing and are trying to branch out and are not particularly good at the new stuff yet. They will get there
It's a fun argument (for me and I suspect Mr C at any rate). Hope we're not spoiling the ambience for you. #sorrychristineifitis
yup, i bought one once in 2007.
:D
I think he needs a holiday. I recommend Air Asia
He went to Boston last week... vicariously!
Well, that is how he travels
So why don't they hire someone who knows what they're doing. Or produce content for internal analysis until they've got it sorted. Obviously they think the content they've produced is good enough or they wouldn't send it out.
hehe
That is one of the things I like about this site. You can have an argument without it being heated. Very rare on the net.
Then are you playing devils' advocate on behalf of someone who's never heard of Motor Sport and what their impressions would be if they heard about the video before all else? Otherwise I don't understand the point. The print mag has the best reputation of all racing mags, the only time that slid was when Haymarket mucked it around. Good writers putting out a bad video/podcast doesn't make their writing bad.
That's about the same vintage as my newest Motorsport (I have the 2006 one with the Damon Hill interview and the 2007 one immediately after the McLaren/Ferrari mess). Nice magazine but too expensive for me.
agreed. by all means pay someone and learn from them, but don't expose yourself in front of the world like that. it's embarrassing to see.
Hitler would have produced good quality video
#Meme
Considering the lack of people who appear to know what they're doing in this field, Motorsport's best hope is probably to hire you, Mr C. You know what you're doing, you love F1 and you won't take any nonsense off the decision-makers :)
no i'm not.
the point is, if you can put that video out and put your name on it, your perception of quality is so much lower than i can deal with, i don't want to know how you lay out your magazine, how you crop images, choose typefaces or write copy.
Would he have to leave home or the office? That could be a deal breaker
I like the look of these
RT @OfficialSF1Team: Es feins Bettmuempfeli! Good night from KL. http://yfrog.com/hsqedzaj
i'm not good enough. that's my point, i want to LOOK UP to these people. i don't want to be better than them.
They should market Sauber Chowder
I believe Mr C could negotiate, or perhaps get Motorsport to pay for a trusted apprentice to be his "agent in Chelsea"...
He had Lene Riefenstahl to do that. Spelling will be wrong
You're going to be looking an awfully long time then. You don't know how good you are...
Sub-contract web stuff to sidepodcast.
They should have higher quality standards. I agree with that much
I disagree. They've had a lifetime working with all those things and know them intimately. Video etc is new to them and they haven't a clue what they are doing with it, or what is good and what isn't. I agree they should find someone who does but I can't see how a lack of knowledge in one area badly affects an area they know maybe more than anyone.
I keep telling him that.
Godwins's Law failed me :(
here's a good example of a low budget video (cannon 5d dslr), made by people who know what they're doing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjPop_M7sEo
that oooozes quality, that's the kind of thing i expect from haymarket, motorsport magazine, f1 teams or whatever. that is better than we can produce and that is my benchmark.
if we can do it on a budget of nothing... it isn't good enough.
:) Well, modesty is a virtue...
£775 is a low-budget video camera? *faints*
You just didn't use it correctly!
Unbelievable. He starts fights every single day, and the conclusion is that he's brilliant?
Bah. I'm gonna start being more contrary.
For handheld HD, yes
No you're not ;)
It's in HD? That's probably why it slowed my computer down running the video...
I beat Godwin. WIN
It's not a fight, it's discussion
very, very low budget. a bbc standard camera costs £17,000.
http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/index.php?t=product/sony_pmw-500&bannerID=5
if you wanna shoot news stories etc. for feature programs you can triple that and then double it :)
We know you're brilliant, we just keep forgetting to tell you. Sorry :(
You are brilliant too.
i do?
uh-oh xx
I don't see any way Motorsport would be caught spending £17000 on freebie content in an entire decade...
mmmm... Lisa Bettany...
No it's not. It's a fight. No wonder we can't start a proper flame war
Ok, yes but on a pro-am scale that's not necesary.
Last season's finale of House was filmed on an SLR photographic camera
I think, the 5D that Mr C mentioned
i know, but that's why you rent freelancers for a couple of hundred a day.
:D
true enough, but i heard they spent a lot more time/money in post production to sort it all out. just a rumour though.
If I had know that I would have clicked on the link. Great photographer and has her own show on TWiT now
agreed. sorry, was just making a point.
wait, she has a show and a brain?
I agree with you. No, hang on...
alex lindsay's brother shot the video, watch it, it's amazing.
Ask Janna
£200 a day x 16 days (for the number of videocasts Motorsport produces at the rate I can see on the website) = £3200 per year. Over the 10-year range, that's more than the £17000 camera that I said would blow the decadely freebie budget.
The only way the podcasts are going to be done to a quality Mr C will accept is if they cost money. Quite substantial money.
Who's paying the camera operator cos I can guarantee he doesn't come for free and a tad more than £17k?
Surprised there were no commments for the youtube vid, until now
I don't care what the camera operator costs. My point is that the camera on its own would be more than the likely decade budget for freebies...
Ok, moving on. Free Practice - highlights only or worth putting on in the background for some interesting commentary and a few choice moments?
Hitler hated free practice!
Back then, the first lap was everything
I've had the comms on while tidying up. It's alright :) Up to you.
i've confused you alia. i am not suggesting motorsport buy or rent a £17,000 camera. i'm just telling you that £700 is cheap as chips. watch the camera+ video it looks amazing and it was done on a £700 camera.
forget the 17,000 price tag.
Anything to distract me from being HUNGRY!!!
The video is a plug for her iphone app. Great quality
It's worth watching to see all the cars falling apart in interesting ways
Camera+ is good. Still no app that does everything the best but in time...
Other than the video was sufficiently jerky due to the bit rate that I struggled to watch it at all. There's a reason why few streams are done to full SD capacity let alone HD.
He had two racing teams
Sold
This is true. Poor build quality all round!!
Other than that, thank you for clarifying you meant to advise a £700 camera plus someone with a clue on how to operate it.
ok, trust me then, that when you find people who know what they are doing, a very small budget can go a long way.
Will do.
Is the argument over or do we need to pay for another half hour?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teMlv3ripSM
hehehe. love the conversation all, i must go watch things that inspire me now :)
and #sorrychristine
I saw that last week, was probably linked from here :D
Worthy repost though
OK. Thanks for the chat :)
Me too.
My diet sucks. Can I give up yet?
No
Humph! I'm hungry... :(
Ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/mark-webber-leads-both-friday-free-practice-sessions-in-malaysia
That means it's working
Yes
That means its the wrong diet
If you aren't hungry, you aren't consuming more calories than you eat
Atkins will load fat into your ateries by the shovel load, that doesn't count
*burning more than you eat
Well, the Soviets hated "escape roads!" ;-)
I'm just too used to eating sandwiches and crisps at this time of night.... Bad habit that's now totally banned!!
Fruit?
Celery? It takes more calories to eat a stick of celery than there are in the stick of celery itself, but it has lots of fibre for that feeling of fullness.
Untrue
It is? Must be one of those stories Mum made up to get me to eat my vegetables then...
Yep. Urban myth
Evening folks.
Thought I'd drop by and see if I can bump Sauber's point score with this lovely video :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBFJ0q2I8dE&feature=channel_video_title
They're also improving their website, now has a little section for upcoming interviews with team members. They had a nice one with a marketing person - I forgot his title heh - so if they get some more involved personnel it could make a nice feature :)
Well, maybe the jury is still out but I'm not spending more than 5 minutes proving or disproving it and my time is up :D
I've also been trying to eat soup at work and adding beans to it for proteiny fibry goodness instead of cheesy paninis. I don't think my wallet could cope with not taking my free lunch though.
Are you doing the low G.I. thing?
No I'm pretty sure I've read a paper about that before. The long and the short of it is that it's nonsense....
If only they would sort the stupid language feature out.
Also doing one of those 'live viewing' events in Hinwil, if you can afford it and live in Switzerland... http://community.sauberf1team.com/events.cfm?luuid=2R53DKE9
:D
I looked at their team merch the other day and it took 3 lots of back and forward clicks to get it in English. With English language selected
No not really. I think the crux of this issue is that (free lunch aside) my meals are healthy and nutritious but I snack way too much. I have a major weakness for salt and vinegar crisps or chips or peanuts. That kind of thing.
It was far, far worse last year so it is at least an improvement. I give up on the media section, so now I could tell you the German for login.
Look into it, cut nothing out but proportioin your meals correctly
And stay off the crisps = bad carbs :D
See if I could do this, I'd be a size 8!!!
Then enjoy life, live with it and love yourself
Hah no this is no good! My summer clothes are too tight and I can't afford any new ones. So a 4 week evening snacking ban is definitely in force!
I don't eat particularly healthy and I snack a lot... trying to slightly change both but I always give myself Friday off. :)
Treats are definitely required
Maybe that's the body's way of saying 'eat more at meal time'
Erm NO!!! You're a bad influence!
Rare treats, though this is not news to me
People who promote diets are the bad influence
Yes, especially if you can make them smaller.
Today's Friday exemption is bacon sandwiches but I'm not putting butter on the bread and I've got a few green things too. Partly because I ran out of things in the cupboards. This makes up for feeble pasta stuff I had Wednesday. :)
Eating healthily is better than the acceptable meaning of the word 'diet'
It is better to eat vaguely heathily than to binge and try to diet it all off. Unproven but it feels it. :)
On the shopping list: scales
Agreed but they promote unrealistic images of what is possible
I don't think you can always trust your appetite though. I get very hungry when I'm hormonal. Ignoring being hungry isn't the same as starving yourself.
Absolutely
I trust mine totally. If your body is telling you that it wants food it may need it.
Cutting out one meal or evening snacks is a bad move. Eat as often as normal but eat less each time.
What you choose to eat at those times is in your control though
I just eat too much. There really is no need to be eating at 9pm! I'm sure in a couple of weeks I can break the habit.
Film Fact: In regards to return on investment, the most profitable film of all time is?

Ooooh is it a new one??
Yep
Apparently not
Though...

Gross revenue $248,639,099

That is flippin' amazing.

Nice job Lukeh
I am impressed with the creativity.
I'm incredibly tempted into looking into buying screen capture software to actually record creating a livery and just speed it up to just show how everything is created, think it'd make for an interesting little video for people to see.
maybe, but they blew a cool $25 million marketing it
Maybe that's what did it
maybe, although that's a pretty standard marketing figure these days
True but not as a multiple of production costs
Also, try to figure out what you need to eat. Sometimes the body craves a particular food because it's actually after some type of nutrient that is featured in it. Therefore if you crave a particular unhealthy food a lot, it may be worth considering stocking healthier-but-still-tasty alternative sources of that nutrient and possibly alternate between them.
Hah! Crisps and pizza?? :D
Several cultures (particularly in the Mediterranean) have a habit of eating late. The time itself isn't a problem as long as you're not eating lorryloads of food just before bedtime.
You would go crazy if you lived in lou's uni flat ;)
Fat? Sugar? Salt? Fibre? (Crisps can contain quite a lot of fibre relative to other snacks)? The nutrients associated with whatever you put on the pizza toppings?
Students don't exactly keep traditional time scales
Maybe the budget was so small they thought it was a misprint...
Perhaps now is a good time for Alison to adjust to her future student ways :)
Hehehehe I already live on about 5 hours sleep a night....
I'm wondering what El Mariachi grossed, it was made for $7000
Would BB Flashback Express do? It's free and I quite like it...
I meant hardware, sorry. Would go through my TV and Xbox.
Ah, OK. Unfortunately I cannot advise on that subject...
Would be difficult. Has to be Component Video Recording. HDMI is not possible, with the HDCP system.
