Good morning, oh veritable denizens of Sidepodcast. Tuesdays are a bit dull, aren't they?

As Bridget did yesterday, I too shall skirt the rather sizeable mammal in the room whilst bringing you the day's F1 news. The good news is that there are only three more days until the action begins in Montreal. Even in the most soporific on F1 times, Montreal usually manages to throw up something interesting, so this time round we could be on for a genuine classic.

Last time I was here I brought you doomsday news about Pirelli's predictions of a laughably short lifespan for their supersoft tyre in the principality, and whilst they may not be making quite the same noises this time, Paul Hembery is equally convinced that the Canadian GP will be a 'thriller'.

Checo Perez is still jumping up and down and waving his arms in the corner, trying to grab the attention of the FIA and assure them that he will be fit to race. He has had to cancel a planned visit to Maranello to play in the Ferrari simulator, meaning he will turn up at the circuit having not even turned a virtual wheel around it.

Jenson Button believes that McLaren can 'dictate the pace' in Montreal, all they need to do is just beat the Red Bulls on in qualifying. Sounds so simple when you put it like that, doesn't it, JB? Pedal a bit harder on Saturdays and your Sunday will be a walk in the park.

So did you get your Olympic tickets? I didn't (which might have something to do with the fact that I didn't apply for any) and the BBC are reporting that some 55% of applicants for tickets were left with their bank accounts untouched. Those who failed to get tickets in the first ballot will be given priority in the second ballot, later this month.

Whilst I've been writing this, Steve Jobs has been wrapping up his speech on the details of iCloud. I would have paid more attention, but reading about Apple things that I can't afford generally sends me into fits of jealous rage, so best save that for another time. I will say, however, that iTunes Match does sound like very bad news for Spotify.

Moving on to inspirational news, former stunt rider, Eddie Kidd, who suffered brain damage in 1996 during a failed jump, has finished the London Marathon. He started on the 17th April and has covered up to a mile a day using a specially built walking frame and in doing so has raised more than £72,000 for charity.

Finally, in 'oooh, pretty' news, volcanoes in Chile's Puyehue-Cordon-Caulle range have been erupting, giving the chance for some stunning photography.

That's all from me, have a happy Tuesday and I'll see you in the comments.

    Wait, WHAT?

More confusing than Lotus v. Lotus, and that's pretty darn confusing!

what starts as chaos ends as chaos ...

  • Nick07/06/2011 at 07:50

I think they should freeze all the dates.

If Bahrain cant happen, have it in Qatar or Spain/portugal

  • Alex Andronov07/06/2011 at 07:54

Moving it always seemed crazy... surely people had already booked tickets and hotels in india?

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2011 at 07:57

    Morning all

The end of the season appears to be descending into chaos

    This is getting farcical now

Moving it always seemed crazy... surely people had already booked tickets and hotels in india?

I made my suspicions about the state of the Delhi race known over the weekend

    :/

  • F1Wolf07/06/2011 at 07:58

    This is getting farcical now

it has been farcical since the race was "postponed" instead of cancelled ...

  • Nick07/06/2011 at 08:00

I made my suspicions about the state of the Delhi race known over the weekend

I think it will be fine, they ran in korea on a track that was about 2 weeks old. they could get the indian track to that state in 4 months no problem.

Problems will likely be with access roads and the like. Indian governments dont move any where near the speed of the developers there

  • Journeyer07/06/2011 at 08:00

If Bahrain cant happen, have it in Qatar or Spain/portugal

At this rate, a December racedate is pretty much dead in the water now. They should just revert back to the original 2011 calendar without Bahrain and leave Bahrain for 2012 (provisionally, anyway).

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2011 at 08:02

Well, up until March, they were supposedly 2 weeks ahead of schedule (I even had photos taken the last week of February) and now they "suddenly need time?"

    Hmmmmm...

how different will Bahrain be in beginning of March ?

The teams, paddock e.t.c. likely have all ready rebooked all there accommodation for December now. I dont think they will appreciate having to change it back now

I think they will keep the date as it is and maybe cancel if it doesnt calm down

  • Journeyer07/06/2011 at 08:03

how different will Bahrain be in beginning of March?

Hard to say. But judgment on a 2012 race shouldn't be made until October, at the earliest.

  • Nick07/06/2011 at 08:04

I doubt it. They're still not keen on going there. If anything, they'd love sticking to the previous status quo.

Odd, though, that Ferrari and Force India voted to race there, while McLaren didn't.

  • F1Wolf07/06/2011 at 08:05

it is FIA, they will postpone the judgement until a week ahead of the race ...

They said they will be ready for the original date anyway though?

The attitude the past week has been along the lines of "India could do with more time". I raised an eyebrow several times... several !!

Well more time is always needed.

Although yas didnt look it the first time i went, it was clear when i went last year it was clear the surrounds were only half finished for the first race

  • F1Wolf07/06/2011 at 08:07

There should be no connection between Bahrain and India. If India can't be ready for the original date, just cancel the race this year ...

  • Nick07/06/2011 at 08:09

There should be no connection between Bahrain and India. If India can't be ready for the original date, just cancel the race this year ...

    Haha, like that would happen.

they proved in korea they are happy to run on a building site.

If they canceled india but not korea then the sport would look pretty bad in a huge market

  • Journeyer07/06/2011 at 08:10

There should be no connection between Bahrain and India. If India can't be ready for the original date, just cancel the race this year ...

There was an article a day or so ago saying India's postponement was purely to reschedule Bahrain and not because they wouldn't be ready in time.

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2011 at 08:10

There should be no connection between Bahrain and India. If India can't be ready for the original date, just cancel the race this year ...

It'll be more than ready though I think. It may even be super ready, although still several days short of super-duper ready, which is something else entirely different.

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2011 at 08:14

...and in some belated IndyCar moanage, Graham Rahal has been insinuating that JR Hildebrand's Panther car had an extra or even a larger fuel tank in order to help him try to win the Indy 500.

Sighhhh... Graham, you came 3rd - deal with it.

so, FIA made 2011 calendar change it can't make without agreement of all the teams (says Mosley) and plus released 2012 calendar with 1 race more than it actually intends to organize (says Todt) ...

what were those WMSC members on during that meeting ?

  • Nick07/06/2011 at 08:54

I wonder what happens in Bahrain if the GP is canceled now following its approval and more protests. Reduced restraint? Retaliation?

Not a lot of people seem to be thinking about that angle

Honest answer? Things stay the same. They won't get better, but they won't get worse, either. But again, F1 doesn't need Bahrain and Bahrain doesn't need F1 (except if you're the royal family).

  • Journeyer07/06/2011 at 09:15

Mind you, it's not like FOTA have publicly challenged the FIA on this issue, either. Do they even know they have that right? I've never seen them raise it.

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2011 at 09:17

Mind you, it's not like FOTA have publicly challenged the FIA on this issue, either. Do they even know they have that right? I've never seen them raise it.

There's supposed to be a statement from them in the next day or two - which may mean nothing

Given recent developments, they may have to redo that statement all over again. Bernie's recent remarks may mean we'll now get a stronger statement from FOTA. That said, FOTA's disunity has been exposed - again.

Did Montreal have a contract for 2009?

I think if the cash runs out, with an ever full calender races may be dropped quicker than before

  • Leigh O'Gorman07/06/2011 at 09:34

Did Montreal have a contract for 2009?

I thought they simply balked at the idea of another GP at the time, only to change their minds later on.

Yes! I did have a minor panic when we were talking about having a thread for each day of Wimbledon that we would need one for each day of the Olympics too. Not this year, at least.

Interesting story on Autosport about Mark Higgins breaking the 4 wheeled lap record for the Isle of Man TT course and planning on having a go at lowering the record further. It hasn't been a great week on the island with 3 deaths already. What can you expect if people race motorbikes on a 35 mile track with 200 corners on public roads.

I like the skill of the TT but they ought to have made significant changes over the years, deaths aren't acceptable.

Some stunning photos of the ISS. These were taken by the last Soyuz that left the ISS in the middle of the shuttle mission. Attached to the ISS are the shuttle Endeavour, a Soyuz and at least one unmanned supply vehicle but I have no idea which one. These photos take a lot of zooming so you can have a good look at anything that interests you.

It's difficult to make it a lot safer while still going through towns and over a mountain. I think they should do everything they can to make it safer and I am sure modern leathers and helmets have improved it greatly.

They have but the bikes themselves are much, much faster. I don't think they should be running full-on Superbikes similar to the ones raced on closed-course tracks in World Superbikes, BSB, AMA, etc.

Getting burgundy/dark carpet and a really light colour wallpaper, hopefully cream. I need more relaxing colours and they're much nicer.

    That's a pretty cool fact

I don't have much trivia for this mission. There is an American astronaut and a Japanese who became a doctor because his uncle said being a doctor was great but once he became a doctor he decided being an astronaut sounded like more fun

They always have something like that on a Soyuz. I love watching it on the way up. It is the only way to understand how much effort goes in to keeping a rocket pointing up. It's like balancing a brush on your finger. You can do it if you make constant movements of your hand. The rocket engines are doing the same and you can see the pig make all sorts of interesting movements in response to what the engines are doing.

Oh, how I wish I had a fast/reliable enough connection to watch stuff online! It does sound like rather a complicated business - as is witnessed by the...um, mishap of the Danes who I linked to in yesterday's daily.

Oh, how I wish I had a fast/reliable enough connection to watch stuff online! It does sound like rather a complicated business - as is witnessed by the...um, mishap of the Danes who I linked to in yesterday's daily.

The Russians have been launching versions of the Soyuz since the 60s so they rarely have any problems now.

The Copenhagen Suborbitals don't really have the budget they need to make their launches totally reliable

  • Nick07/06/2011 at 20:40

Even if it is a step backwards I can understand why NASA want a modern Apollo rather than the shuttle. A lot less complicated, more reliable and safer but just not as capable

I think the shuttle was a big step backwards.

nasa went from focusing on deep space capable craft to a very limited range one.

It was a very good delivery truck, but that shouldn't be what Nasa is about.

  • Bassano07/06/2011 at 20:42

I think the shuttle was a big step backwards.

The did a lot of research in the late 90s. Rigged one of our Concordes with probes and sensors. For a while I think they were serious about a replacement

We had a thank-you frame/plaque in our crew room with a space suit badge from one of the Apollo missions

  • Nick07/06/2011 at 20:43

I think the shuttle was a big step backwards.

Not the shullte itself. but the shuttle program becoming nasas main focus.

it should have been a side project

  • Steven Roy07/06/2011 at 20:45

It was a very good delivery truck, but that shouldn't be what Nasa is about.

The shuttle should have been a first off re-useable craft but they still have the same design 20 years later. Going back to a modern version of Apollo is hardly progress. They should have developed a version of the shuttle to set up bases on the moon and Mars by now. If any moon or Mars missions are based on Apollo then that limits the amount of equipment that can be carried.

I think it is a shame that the ISS has not been used as a launching point for missions that go further afield

  • Bassano07/06/2011 at 20:46

it should have been a side project

Would've been an expensive side project.

How much do you think was spare for the main event?

  • Steven Roy07/06/2011 at 20:50

The did a lot of research in the late 90s. Rigged one of our Concordes with probes and sensors. For a while I think they were serious about a replacement

Makes you wonder what kind of useful data they got from that

  • Bassano07/06/2011 at 20:51

Makes you wonder what kind of useful data they got from that

A lot of it was about skin temperature I think, what with the long term issue of insulating tiles

At the time it was thought they were working with Boeing on the SST project. A supersonic passenger replacement for Concorde. Who knows

  • Pat W07/06/2011 at 20:51

If any moon or Mars missions are based on Apollo then that limits the amount of equipment that can be carried.

They could send the crew and the equipment separately, no need to have it in one Apollo-like capsule design. Could send the equipment on a few months ahead and park it in orbit.

  • Bridget07/06/2011 at 20:56

The Copenhagen Suborbitals don't really have the budget they need to make their launches totally reliable

Remind me to save a bit more before I make the Mars-trip craft! Space travel is expensive...why don't they get corporate sponsors like F1 teams do? A successful mission would be great publicity.

nasa went from focusing on deep space capable craft to a very limited range one.

It was a very good delivery truck, but that shouldn't be what Nasa is about.

I was watching something on Nat Geo the other day that said something to the tune of "people in the funding offices have lost interest in space missions because of the problems on the home front." Sad, but true, given that we haven't yet found an Earth-like planet close enough to colonise.

They could send the crew and the equipment separately, no need to have it in one Apollo-like capsule design. Could send the equipment on a few months ahead and park it in orbit.

Would assembling it in a vacuum not present...um...challenges? Also, how do they get enough water up there to keep a colony going (even if they do it in several trips)?

  • Steven Roy07/06/2011 at 20:56

At the time it was thought they were working with Boeing on the SST project. A supersonic passenger replacement for Concorde. Who knows

    I know of the SST.

They still need to launch the equipment somehow

  • Pat W07/06/2011 at 20:59

They still need to launch the equipment somehow

Launch it on smaller rockets like today's. Assemble at the station. Seems crazy to me to ever need to build anything the size of a Saturn 5 ever again whilst the station exists.

  • Steven Roy07/06/2011 at 21:00

Remind me to save a bit more before I make the Mars-trip craft! Space travel is expensive...why don't they get corporate sponsors like F1 teams do? A successful mission would be great publicity.

F1 teams can guarantee lots of TV coverage. With rockets there can be a lot of build up and then the whole thing can fizzle out or explode so sponsors have a low chance of a return on their money.

Would assembling it in a vacuum not present...um...challenges? Also, how do they get enough water up there to keep a colony going (even if they do it in several trips)?

They assembled the space station in a vacuum. THere is lots of water on the moon

  • Bridget07/06/2011 at 21:07

Point. I hadn't considered that. If they crashed on take-off, they'd probably be held in breach of contract.

They assembled the space station in a vacuum. THere is lots of water on the moon

I had forgotten that. I know there's a joke in stopping off to charge the glasses on the moon, but I can't quite reach it.
