Morning sidepodfolk! I hope this week is a good one for you – one with enough commitments to keep you from being bored, but not enough to tire you out. In case you do feel stressed this week, I've found a few cute links for you:
Let's start with Aelita Andre. In case you weren't watching Aljazeera's lunchtime show yesterday, she's a four year-old abstract artist who's recently opened an exhibit in New York. If only I had painted like this instead of making pictures of bunnies and square houses! Let's hope she ends up a child-prodigy success story.
Ever wanted to see a cat take on a watermelon?
Some hedgehog owners haven't worked out that hedgehogs anoint themselves as a defence mechanism and insist on bathing them. Still, a hedgehog in bath foam is cute.
If I ever marry, I want a cake like one of these. Alternatively, I'd settle for a birthday cake along these lines.
Final cute link: a toddler and a sea otter playing with each other. Everybody say "N'aww".
On to the F1 news.
I will skirt around the enormous elephant in the room, because of sidepodcast's 'no politics' rule. It would degenerate into me going on for pages about the importance of human rights and how awesome Mark Webber is for making a statement on his website, followed by some 'I love Max Moseley – despite his controversial proclivities – because he says sensible things in the Telegraph'. That said, I think Leigh O'Gorman had a fantastic idea for a replacement race.
Instead of a GP in Bahrain, how about @alex_wurz @AussieGrit @BSenna & others race 2nd hand Skoda's at the Nurburgring? Charity race? :)
Jenson Button (and Jessica Michibata) took part in the Blenheim Triathlon today. Jenson finished ten minutes and twenty seconds behind the leader. Go Jenson!
Now is it time for some science links to inspire us? Yay, I love this time of the week! Okay, here we go...
A bit of evolutionary theory for you, sweetly packaged in an article about skunks.
Ever wanted to build your own rocket and go up into space (fine, I'll admit that my brother and I made one out of a box when I was four. We were most disappointed when it didn't fly)? Some optimistic Danes show us how it's done (almost).
People who understand physics: does anyone think technology like this could be adapted for the varying angles of F1 car suspension so we could have electric engines and be green?
Some chemists have had a vote and decided that a few new elements should be added to the periodic table, despite them only having been fleetingly observed.
A group of physicists, more impressively managed to make anti-hydrogen and store it for one thousand seconds. We stand in awe.
That's it from me for today. I hope your Monday goes well!

Morning all
Quiet morning...... nice to see my suggestion for a Skoda race was met with approval
;)
Definitely worth a read:

flatmate took this one just for me :D

hahaha! you'll be a lot closer than that in October. :D
this will be me! Just with the BETTER Lotus :D
although, perhaps doing that in Monaco > Korea, who knows :D
won't be anywhere near as glamorous, but hey, less guests for the team to entertain. :)
and its allll weekend, not just for one session :)
My workplace really is a pen vacuum... I went in for 15mins to send off my application form and I've lost 2 pens :P
Hehe, Leigh, you know that I'm always enthusiastic to see Bruno on track!
I saw that - had a whole bunch of articles about it, but realised I couldn't cover it as well as Aljazeera had in their Inside Story episode without banging on for pages.
I hate when that happens! I took to using pencils unless completely unavoidable - fewer people want to steal cheap pencils ;)
Have you looked around for rifts and wormholes? :)
I vented on my site on Friday and yesterday.
I saw the Friday one - it was one of the ones I wanted to post. Can you linky to yesterday's venting session, please?
Not a vent as such, but more a warning...

Afternoon Ping --> "Déjà Vu"
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/06/06/deja-vu/
Leigh, I swear I had a deja vu moment as I reached the bottom half of the article - it was as if I was reading your article all over again! :D
That was not a trick, but an error - removed now
:D
Are you kidding? I thought you were trying to be clever there!
:D Thought so, ta! :)
I thought about leaving, but...
I shall write no more about Bahrain until the story takes an inevitable twist either today or during the Canadian GP weekend
:)
I officially endorse this
;)
And the toll keeps rising...
:(
It's sad, but you know, that race is a dangerous relic. The risk is the big pull, right?
Yep.
Monaco race edit is up!
http://www.formula1.com/video/
Lots of radio messages from Lewis, including this gem when he was told of his (first) drive-through:
"Surprise, surprise. The stewards love me, really."
No wonder he was so worked up by the time he talked to Lee.
You know, Lewis is a really awesome driver and a cool guy, but I really wish he'd shut up sometimes!
Agreed
I'd cut Lewis some slack - goodness knows what we would've heard from Senna or Schumacher if team radio was also open to the public back in their day...
That said, he called Michael a "dirty driver" when he passed him at Ste. Devote. Given everyone else's reaction to that move (hard but fair), I'm a bit surprised at that one.
Michael IS a dirty driver.... Always has been
That can be argued, but I haven't heard anyone criticize Michael on that overtake. From what I've seen, everyone's called it hard but fair.
That move wasn't dirty. I thought that was an expert move - something Lewis could not manage.
The move itself was ok I thought also, Lewis was just being a brat
My mate (the one who got me into running) is trying to get me to do a mini triathlon. 400m swim, 18km bike ride and 4km run. The only thing I can't do yet is the swim...
There is that
I can't swim at all - scares me senseless
I also had an embarrassing moment in a swimming pool as a child that traumatised me forever...
;)
Heh. Indeed so.
One thing I didn't like so much about the race edit: too much of THAT WOMAN for my liking.
What's the ratio of THAT WOMAN to Ginger Spice?
Another thing that FOM is out of kilter with
:D
You just reminded me, I promised to do a "Ginger-edit" for a friend of mine who was a Ginger fan back in the day, but isn't an F1 fan. I was telling him how much Ginger had slipped in the intervening years.
I think I may have just reserved two tickets to the Senna Movie next week, introduced by Jan Magnussen.
Ace
:D
Only downside is that they are front row, but I don't care!
Looks-wise, not much. Otherwise, a LOT.
My word; 4pm and I am getting tired......
:/
Nick has forced me to buy Alex's book for my Kindle
You need to be forced to buy Alex's book? Tsk tsk. ;) :D
Forced..? Or kindly coerced...
She had one before but got angry and destoyed it with soy milk :)
Errrm that is not what happened! It was just an unfortunate accident!!
FEUD!! :D
Calm down, this isnt lou and alex!
Oooohhh... this could get all NASCAR on us
;)
Awww. :P :D
I won't ask
More like suggested. I had no idea you could get it on the Kindle. Once I saw it there I had to buy it so more like subliminal coercion....
Someone asked me if I was attending the "sidepodpub" on the 29th. Trying to figure out where it is. Any one here know? Thanks! :)
Completely forgot about this... I'm in if it's in London
If it is in London, we'll have to get the last train back. Don't feel like paying for a hotel room. :)
The 29th..? That's a Wednesday or something, isn't it?
Yep, yep it is
Sure it's not in July? The 29th of July is a Friday.
I thought it was June - oh well. If it's July, I wont be here I'm afraid
:(
Don't know, the person who mentioned it just said the 29th. I'll still be in the UK then anyway. So, anyone know exactly where in London and around what time it will be?
Bassano will be the chap with the details I assume
I'm new here, so I don't know anyone other than Turkey Machine. *blush*
Welcome :D
Hi, I'm Eric. Now you know me :) and let me introduce you to my friend Leigh :)
Hello, I'm... ehhh... Leigh (also known as TheF1Archive on the twittermajig)
Welcome! :D You've been here before, right? At the last race? :)
Thanks everyone!
And yes, I was here at the last race, still getting a feel for how the site works.
I fly out to the UK in 2 weeks!!! :D
Oh WOW. Lucky you! :) Perfect time to meet the gang (except me - I'm nowhere near the UK.) :D
Me either. I'm in the American Midwest. Though I keep weird hours. (off to bed for me in a few)
I'm in North Carolina for now, but soon I will be spending a minimum (hopefully) of 6 months in the UK. I'm past giddy. *giggle*
I'm in Dubai, might be in London around the 29th of July, don't really plan these things!
When is that wedding?
In the summer
Helpful thanks :D
Hey all, just wanted to let you know i think the meetup with Kai in London will be in June, I know she's coming over and maybe going to goodwood which is 1st weekend of July. Not sure she's around for the end of July. Hope this helps :) and Hey Emily!
Speaking of which, where's YOUR Emily? :D Haven't heard from her in ages.
In that case, I'll see some of you later this month
:)
Gah - need to sort Spa flights and hotels tonight
well i met my Emily for coffee and lunch today, she's working lots atm but said if she's free she'll come up to London for the meetup with me to say hi to everyone again :) so you may hear from her soon.
Hrmmm, I wonder if my friend Marina knows about this... She's planning on being in Oxford that day, might be able to talk her into coming to London for the day. :D
i'm hoping i'll be able to go. It may be around the time i have my German exchange student.
the more, the merrier
:)
German exchange student! :) Well, if said student turns out to be an F1 fan, that may not be much of a concern. :D
woohoo!
Ohh, North Carolina, NASCAR territory. You'd better be careful they don't see you on an F1 site :)
Ick, hate nascar.
ahhh hehe she's not really an exchange student. i met her through the exchange a few years ago, now it's probably better to call her a friend :) she's not really an F1 fan :(
Right folks,
I have to disappear for a bit
Back later
:)
That's what Marina was saying about me earlier this year. I'm a new fan.
Seriously, fast cars that look like super awesome go carts, running on tracks that AREN'T an oval! What's not to like? :p
Quite the minority in your neck of the woods. :D
Bingo! :D
See ya Leigh. Time for bed for me too. Night folks!
see ya! i'm off too for a bit
I feel like I'm in a recurring nightmare... Stuck waiting for more parcels that almost certainly aren't coming.... Ridiculous!
That's no fun. I sent a parcel to TM 5 weeks ago and it still hasn't been delivered... :
Booooo!! I have one day delivery on this. Considering it was ordered on Friday, it really should be here....
I only have one more parcel that needs to arrive before I fly out, so long as it's here by then, I'll be happy!
Hi! :)
You're more patient than me clearly :P To be fair I'm not off work again now until Sunday so it would be quite annoying....
Right, so I found a final screening of Senna on the 29th with better seats, so I reserved 4 ;)
The movie was launched in Spain two weeks ago but I haven't seen it yet! I don't have much spare time, hope I'll be able to go the the cinemas this weekend :)
Evening all
It's Apple's WWDC this evening but as I am off to a Senna Q&A I will miss it
For Mr C, Alex and any other Mac heads, here is a fun Keynote Bingo :D
http://www.krazybig.com/bingo/
Cool, well done
I'm a full time student, but I'm out for the summer already, thus this trip. Advisor is letting me take online courses to finish my degrees so that I can stay in the UK. :) I'm also not working for now, which sucks.
Enjoy a little something from the sidepodcast.com back catalogue.

Bah. Glued to live blogs here. :D
I'm just sick to death of my postal service. They've angered me considerably today! They keep randomly redirecting my mail to someone elses house. I called them to lodge another complaint today and it turns out they lost the first complaint altogether.... Absolutely fabulous.

Loving this post which continues the journalists vs bloggers debate: http://anygivensurface.wordpress.com/2011/06/03/the-big-debate-journalists-vs-bloggers/
I wonder how many other sports and activities this is going on in and we have no idea about it.
Apple shininess makes people do the craziest things
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/chinese-teenager-sells-kidney-iphone-212819458.html
I think it's going on in most of them if I'm honest.
Football is closing ranks in respect of photography. You have to be accredited to take / sell photos of matches. To get accreditation for the football league you have to submit 15 press clippings from the previous season, 30 for the premier league. It's a great example of a circle you can't break in to....
Hullo all.
Hey mate. It's a bit quiet here tonight. How's tricks?
Not too bad, been better. Surprised how quiet it is though, usually plenty of chatter after an Apple thingy
Yeah, very surprised! Did see the Apple 'thingy' looks interesting.
How was your Cornetto?
Highlight of my day :)
:D Did look good. I've been working at home today and our Ice Cream man didn't come.
It was a very odd moment noting down things to be told here's a free cornetto for everyone in the middle of a busy day. This is my kind of office :)
Hello.
Might have been why I've largely been quiet across all s/m today, well that and something else.
Wow nice one
:D
#sidepodspace
Tomorrow at 4:12pm Eastern/9:12p UK a Soyuz will launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome with the next three members of the ISS crew
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/living/index.html
During the last shuttle mission Commander Mark Kelly recorded a message which U2 played in Seattle. U2 have linked up with several people on the ISS during their tour.
Finally on the iplayer there is a program on the Huygens mission to Titan. It starts with Yuri Gagarin going into space and ends with the Huygens landing on Titan. Titan is fascinating and the Huygens mission is really interesting. If you don't want to sit through all the build up and watch students messing about designing instruments I would suggest watching the last half hour of it.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0109ccd/Destination_Titan/
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/shuttle_station/features/U2_ISS.html
Was it the only way to see his entire ego?
Is Titan somewhere we can escape to?
:D
Maybe Easyjet have a cheap flight there
Not for a few million years yet. It is like the Earth was a very long time ago. It is weirdly similar to the Earth but totally different. It has lakes and rivers and the processes that form them are identical. THe difference is instead of water they are all ethane and methane
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/tweets-of-the-week-standing-up-and-being-counted
Ah, that's not so good.
Sour grapes.. 'unidentified driver and engineer' say Hildebrand had an illegal fuel tank in the 500
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/new-cars/motorsports/shareTweet/article2046233/?utm_campaign=Shared+Web+Article+Links&utm_medium=Referrer:+Social+Network+/+Media&utm_source=twitter.com
It's yellow! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Titan_in_natural_color_Cassini.jpg
I'm not living there.
Yup. Methane rain falls like snow though....
It creates a few problems. It's a billion miles from the sun so not much chance of getting a sun tan.
Is the colour so important?
Well, you know, I really don't like yellow. But if it was our only option, I could probably get over it.
Wait till you get there and find the red bitd amongst the yellow
:D
By the time it is suitable for us the colour should have changed anyway.
Purple will do nicely.
I am not sure we get the choice. Unless we can ship the right chemistry out there and shift the stuff that is there. The good thing about all that methane and ethane is we should never run out of fuel
:D :D
If the CERN thing figures out how to make a big bang, we could start again and make everything purple!
Oooh!
It's possible but we can't have another big bang without wiping us all out.
All we need to do is find a gas that creates a purple atmosphere and replace the current atmosphere with that
That is probably a better idea. No one put me in charge of CERN.
I think you should be in charge of it. Take all the technical gubbins out and you have a huge bunker to do what you like with and a huge round running track.
Lightning near our house! http://www.flickr.com/photos/rubbergoat/5806008346/in/photostream
Leave room for the car!

How can I be last in my own game this week..
Oh no! :)
Where did you go wrong?
What you should be doing is supporting the HRT's see
I picked someone who usually gets podiums, and he crashed :)
Oooh, tricky.
Evening!
Senna was fantastic! I recorded 40mins of Q&A, I'll see what the quality is like when I get home and maybe it'll be broadcastable
Awesome.
Sounds a little quiet but very listenable
I sense a podcast episode in the making ;)
YAY.
Are you allowed?
It was a public session but I will speak to Christine and Mr C about it first and maybe email the Director
If he's not keen then I guess I could be persuaded to 'keep it among friend's ;)
Oh yeah, permission. hehe
There was no 'off the record' discussion but it'd make a good podcast and I don't think it contains any spoilers for the film
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Who was the Q&A with?
Not trying to be a spoilsport but if it was intended as a 'thing you pay for' they might not want it released
Roger has pulled out of Halle, this kind of makes me happy because now I don't have to watch it :)
I'm quite happy to respect that, if it's his wishes. I think it'd be good promo but I don't want to tread on anyone's toes
The Director, Asif Kapadia
Fab
Hello Kai, Bassano, everyone, hope you're well, just popping in & out here.
Kai, if I remember rightly, you're in CT. Don't know if there've been any SENNA screenings near you, but in case there haven't, here's a link to the only one known in the Boston area.
http://starlight.org/newengland/sennatickets/
Cheers, Anthony
Hi Anthony
Hi Anthony
Thank you! I got to see it on a very strange day where it happened to be streamed on Netflix for about 5 hours, then taken down. It was so weird. But I'd love to see it in the cinema.
It'll be fun if I see you at the theater. For now, gotta split, have a businness to run! Cheers
Take care!
TMR Game results should anyone want to see them.. http://toomuchracing.com/2011/06/07/tmr-game-2011-week-20/
June 30 is the advanced screening for $15 general admission/$35 special reserved seating, proceeds going to charity. I'll be in the UK, but maybe a lurker will go to Boston to see it. :)
Sounds like fun.
It's way past my bedtime now so I will bid you goodnight
Good night.

I had no idea the Isle of Man TT races were on this week but they have had three deaths already. Motor sport is really dangerous if you use tracks like that.
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/06062011/58/rider-dies-isle-man-tt.html
I'm watching a few minutes of the Stanley Cup Final with the Bruins and Canucks. There was a huge hit and the Bruin Nathan Horton was taken to the hospital, but he was moving all of his limbs, so that's a relief. They had strapped him on that stretcher really good, and even taped his hands together in front of him. I thought maybe he couldn't move them.
Sports can be dangerous. :(
I didn't know it was the Stanley Cup Final either. Clearly I am very ill-informed.
Changed days in sports like ice hockey when that level of care is taken of an injured player.
The track in the Isle of Man is 35 miles long. It's all public roads with standard kerbs etc. Every year one or two people die. Unbelievably one day of the meeting the track is open for anyone to take anything they like out on it. All those bikers who have been their drinking all weekend and then they are allowed to go as fast as they like with hundreds/thousands of others doing the same
Sounds like it was fun in the old days, and just plain dangerous now. Maybe I'm just getting old.
Like the NFL, the guy got a 5 minute major penalty and was charged with interference for targeting the guys' head when he wasn't looking.
It is something that should never have made it through the 60s but somehow it is still there today
From the live blog
Things have been nasty throughout, but the worst was Aaron Rome's blindside cheap shot on nathan Horton that has sent the Bruins winger to the hospital
http://www.nesn.com/2011/06/bruins-live-blog-bs-return-home-looking-to-get-back-in-series-with-game-3-on-garden-ice.html
I thought that was allowed in hockey. I have only been to one hockey game and one of the teams had a 16 yeard old who was clearly very good. He went on to be the top player in the country. The opposition did not take kindly to this kid making them look stupid so someone introduced his nose to a stick at great speed
I guess they're buckling down on targeting the head. The regular checking into the boards is fine, and the game is rough anyway, but they are taking more notice and penalizing head hits. I saw one the other week where the dude wasn't even looking and the other guy laid him out. Cringe worthy.
I guess all sports have to take things like this more seriously now
Speaking of which, I wonder if we'll have an NFL season this year. Right now, no, it looks like, but I haven't had time to follow it.
Another strike?
I'll care about the NFL again when the Redskins stop sucking AND Dan Snyder is no longer the owner.
Or when I get free Bronco's tickets, 'cause the stadium is within walking distance of my soon to be office at the end of the month. As is Rockies stadium. And the place where the Avalanche play. Too bad I don't really care about any of those sports.
Here's a bit on it.
http://mhutch.blogspot.com/2011/03/how-long-will-2011-nfl-strike-last.html
That could take a while
They're working out contingency plans for an 8 game season if need be.
You must be busy getting ready for the big move.
I think I will just ignore it until a game actually takes place. Whenever that is
That's what I've been doing. Works for me. :)
I have to get some sleep. See you guys later.
I'm not holding my breath, that's for sure.
Night
Only 2 more weekends left in VA., 3rd weekend we're in the car and on our way!
Rocknall Approach. SidepodAirways flight 004. Anyone read?
Rocknall? I think your navigation is off
KInloss Approach then. ?
It would take a lot of paddling to get from Kinloss to Rockall.
Or an Osprey......
Any interesting going on in the Capital of Sidepodcastland, then ?
It has been fairly quiet for the last few days. I guess that will change very soon with Canada and Le Mans both being this weekend.
Hmmm, not looking good for Giggles Radio then....
Two races and his kid throwing a spanner in the works last weekend too
...And here's me teaching Radio Navigation when the station I am trying to home in on is not broadcasting.... :P
That kid has it in for you
He sure does, I wonder if he is just trying to shot down pilots like mr. C offs drummers...
say somebody is late with the June 7th daily. And I did offer Chrisitne a post a while back, I wonder min ecan sub in.
James did last Tuesday but I don't know if that was a one off or a regular thing. Since he hasn't posted a daily someone will so if you want to do it go ahead.
I have already sent it off to Chrisitne as filler. Perhpas she forgot , or maybe, wants to forget that the manuscript ever existed.... :P
Send her an e-mail or a DM on twitter reminding her that she has it
Time I was asleep.
I look forward to reading your daily in the morning.
Night all

Good that he is tweeting though, although posts like this did amuse me! http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/05/28/session-will-restart-at-15-35/
looks like mix up between tweet and blog post, case of wrong window on the screen ? :-)
Late daily, totally my fault, apologies to Simon! http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-7th-june-2011
