Tuesday is barely a few hours old and is already looking unusual. I don't recall my last daily post for this site, but it must have been a while ago. To further compound my confusion, I've borrowed Christine's MacBook to write this on, as mine is somewhat tied up rendering new and interesting things.
At present, we're three hours into a four hour burn and a secondary desk fan has been called into action to prevent the poor machine becoming a pool of aluminium. Our studio is consequently both very noisy and also very cold... as I write this, it's 1am.
Feed me some Formula 1
As drivers, teams and media prepare for the European season's final hurrah in Monza this weekend, we've been busy wrapping up news from the last race at Spa-Francorchamps. Do have a listen to the latest edition of F1 Debrief to get our thoughts on happenings in Belgium.
On that subject our release coincides nicely with the official video edit of the same race on the Formula 1 site. While easily one of the best post-race productions I've seen, I do question why so many unique camera angles and shots come to light after the race, rather than during it. Be sure to watch the montage, if only to witness how exciting and varied live F1 coverage could be, given the right talent behind the desk.
Moving into the present and some news courtesy of F1Minute - The technical brains behind some of the top teams are split on how much of a difference they think DRS will make in Monza. It occurs to me mid-season testing could make such a big difference this year, with so much DRS experimentation happening at race meetings.
In the past, we used to bemoan cars running around the Autodromo Nazionale Monza ahead of a Grand Prix, as it reduced the amount of running teams needed to fit in during Friday practice. However, this year such an event could give the FIA chance to try out various overtaking zone options, allowing them to select the best one come the weekend. As it is now, we won't really know what to expect until lap three or four of the GP, by which point it's too late to make any changes.
That uplifting note on which we end
I'll leave you with some enjoyable F1 tweets of the week and a reminder to find out about the things Red Bull got up to in Cardiff at the weekend. I was most excited to learn what Daniel Ricciardo could do with a NASCAR at his disposal.
Anyone for a warm cup of tea?
Nice daily, Mr C!
Re: race edits, I think the reason they don't use all the fancy edits is because they don't necessarily add much to the story. And when you're doing something live, you don't really want to spend too much time doing replays (which they're already kind of doing). Also. they don't always make things look that much better. Previous race edits also showed some new angles, but didn't always make it better - for me, anyway.
i love the cars heading over the crest of the hill and and the shot through the armco. i love all the pitlane camera work around rob and red bull and the cars coming in together. all of that could go to make for better race coverage.
I like the bleakness of todays' daily... I feel like I'm with Mr C there in the cold noisy room!
ooooh I have sidepodcast mail. I assume. I don't know anyone else in England who a) knows my address and b) would send me mail addressed to "Amy"
Good morning!
Hehehe you're much more sensible than me. I was just confused when mine came. How pretty is Christine's handwriting??
F1 engines power history (chart) http://martif1.com/2011/09/06/evolucion-de-la-potencia-de-los-motores-de-f1/
Someone has definitely been at my desk. Things have moved.
Morning all
cleaners, per chance?
Mr C has admited as much in the daily!
I don't think Mr C could be classified as such :)
Who's been sitting at my desk?
My desk is still a mess
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
That would be the original JS.
:)
Interesting goings-on in Asia.
The Chinese want to build an oval with more seating than Indianapolis Motor Speedway. http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/09/05/indycar-and-china/
Whilst the Thais want a Grand Prix, which could be fun since they have good backing. People forget Red Bull is half-owned by a Thai family. http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/09/06/the-pros-and-cons-of-a-thai-grand-prix/
Aye - Terry Angstadt confirmed this prior to Sonoma in the infamous Randy Bernard / Brian Barnhart press conference.
Unfortunately, this is the same Chinese race IndyCar (and previously both IRL and Champ Car) have been trying to secure for the six / seven years.
I don't trust Angstadt when he says something is 90% complete - deals tend to fall through several weeks later. I really thought Bernard had trained Angstadt to keep quiet.
I wonder if they will go back to surfers if they are in the greater neighbourhood
The answer is still no, for now.
And technically, this series / car never visited Surfer's bar a non-Championship event at teh end of '08.
Surfer's Paradise was a CART / Champ Car stable race.
I guess its also a case of if V8's will let them now as well.
But bizzarely called 'The Indy'!
I missed that, I don't tend to watch/read them.
Sounds like CART's Korea..
The V8' s are popular there, but nowhere near the level of CART back in the day.
A lot of the CART / Champ Car events were essentially titled "Indy"
CART used to be called "Indycar" (small c)
As opposed to Indy Car, IndyCar or INDYCAR
;)
knowing Qingdao and people from that area the only thing that will happen will be yet another case of government money embezzlement ... and how on earth can they justify such a big capacity track when they struggle to fill up grandstands in Shaghai, that is twice as rich and 10 times as large ...
Qingdao should stick to beer making ...
Which is why this will fall through like every other CART / IndyCar / IRL / Chap Car plan to go to China, etc...
These championships should really ask around before they make commitments..
As I said, this sounds like Angstadt opening his mouth when the best advice would be to "keep quiet"
Zhuhai would probably be more feasible option. Track is there and perhaps good enough for Indy (not an oval though) and only an hour ferry ride from Hong Kong and basically 15 min by taxi from Macau... Would be much easier to fill up the grandstands, and cheaper too ...
Rain due Sunday, that'll make Silverstone fun!
Does it get many spectators for other races?
It needs to be an oval though to help maintain the balance of circuit order.
...especially now that the Milwaukee Mile is not returning.
there are many local races, championships, popular place with petrolheads :-) , with a bit of promo they could go after the usual Macau GP crowd ...
well perhaps, but if their goal is to break into China then they may consider some alternatives to the mad Qingdao idea :-)
True, but as I keep pointing out, they have much bigger problems at home to be looking at, rather than thinking of venturing further abroad.
#affinity
every time I come back to this tab I want a cup of tea. Grr.
If their goal is to break into china they could just drop a few plates...
oooh, i could do with one too.
My lunchtime viewing

I have finally opened my mail. I shall be a-stickering Singapore. I wonder if thats illegal there. Probably.
don't get arrested - sticker heikki.
thats my korean intention :D
That could be an awesome book/movie title
"The Korean Intention"
To get arrested?
of course
we have tea now :)
Theres only 5 weeks til I hope to fly out and I still have no itinerary. I'm glad I don't win trips a lot, it might take years off my life.
My boss convinced me to have another day off before I go because he didn't like that I was coming back to work for one day in between my NZ trip and my Korea trip. I don't much fancy the idea of sitting at home doing nothing since I won't be being paid for it but he insisted :(
me too!
Grrr... I'm trying to sort out train tickets for Donington later this month - only National Rail purchase area has been down for the last two day
:(
I have coffee
*FAIL*
I also now have tea
Woohoo!!! A parking permit is mine :D :D :D
I knew they'd love Alphonso!
my VPN expires in 30 days and I am in two minds over renewing it for another 12 months if I'm not going to need to watch lots of BBC coverage next year.
I am - I watch MotoGP and some other stuff sometimes. Plus the BBC F1 website has lots of stuff for UK only - I wonder how much of that there will be next year?
I use the iPlayer for a few other things now and then, and a little bit of Hulu, so I'll probably end up doing it anyway, but I'll likely moan about it :D
:D
Same here probably. It's very useful and quite cheap. I may just have Danish F1 TV on and Radio 5 Live next year, just might miss out when the ad breaks are on...
That is assuming I will watch it live, that is...
Sky Sports is on mypremium.tv, if i recall correctly. and it doesn't need a VPN for it to work. :)
It is Christine's Rankings day today so if anyone has spotted anything, please do yell.

Hello world.
Just arrived from hospital. Nothing wrong, but my dad has had a little problem.
How are you all?
I'm fine, if a little sore from the miles on the bike I put in over the weekend. Hope your dad's ok.
Last week I did 40km. I suffered a bit hehe.
He's ok, thanks :)
The latest forecast indicates worsening conditions with no projected breaks in the rain through the remainder of the day and into the night. Due to this forecast, the USTA is cancelling the Tuesday, September 6 Day Session (session #17), and the Tuesday, September 6 Night Session (session #18). Play will resume tomorrow, Wednesday, September 7 at 11 a.m. ET, gates open at 10 a.m. ET, weather permitting.
Time to get a roof, New York.
How are you going to cope for a whole day?!
what am I meant to do at work now! I am training the new Amy and now I'll actually have to pay attention!
that would be one big roof.
This weather stuff is real greedy like that. Tssh, weather!
I've been keeping up with the tournament on the BBC website in work and tomorrow all I'll have to read about is how many Wales are going to lose by tonight when they play England. Damn you weather.
:D :D
They did have the chance to add a roof to both of their stadiums at one time or another but both times they went 'no! bigger is better!'
Melbourne will probably have its third roof by the time they even get one.
#disclaimer
I was wondering if I should teach new Amy how long I spend in the comments each day. Probably not.
Legend.
it's only fair on her that you do ;)
I did 55+ miles total last week, 23 in one day. I think that's the one that's hurting :)
Paul di Resta for being so 'diplomatic' despite provocation at Spa
Paul di Resta for announcing that he is going to ASI to be on the Autosport stage, the F1 grid and drive in the live action shows. I think he wants them to re-name it the Paul di Resta show.
Paul di Resta for.... Any more would be hogging it.
Has anyone seen the new Santander advert with Hamilton and Button? Building a giant lego car, can't find it on YouTube yet.
Someone stole the music
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcUPbwOYtu8
The only Lego/Santander ad I can see on youtube is the bridge from last year
Wasn't the one I was thinking of.
I wish the BBC had told me before Monza was in the UK, I would've gone!

Last week I almost published my race review as a Doctor Who title (which was a really odd moment) so I know how you feel :)
I opened the rankings post in a new window and new posts kept appearing. I was very confused

could be worse, she could easily have declared alonso as last years world champion.
:D
Evening all. It's been a long week. Managed to watch the Belgian GP on iPlayer, was a good one.
Also I finally watched "Murray Walker's Life in the Fast Lane". What a great documentary.

the Austin Statesman F1 Twitter feed just posted this link, pointing out that NASCAR's season finale and some big Texas NFL games are happening on F1 weekend - http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/new-cars/motorsports/formula-one-sets-itself-up-for-another-failure-in-us/article2154788/
Genius as ever
hehe, legend!
Respect to Ant Davidson for putting his name on the entry list this weekend for Silverstone, I thought he wouldn't be healed yet. They've listed Simon Pagenaud as a 3rd driver just in case.
Hahah, someone has the Twitter name @pjharvey and it isn't the singer PJ Harvey.. who has just won the Mercury Music Prize.
Well this is awkward - @pjharvey

You'd think he'd have changed it then :)
