Hello and welcome to Monday, it's that time again, time for a daily. I suppose it is also back to school time again. I always remember the fifth of September as the sort of time I'd get that sinking feeling. Thankfully, school was a while ago for me. Anyways, what kind of F1 things are we talking about?

  • This weekend, we put up a couple of posts, the first of which involved David Coulthard and his Mercedes Benz reality versus virtual race. The action kicks off today at 3pm, with live streaming on the website, so if you have spare time, it might be worth seeing who can win - DC on track, or the excellent gamers on the simulator.
  • We also heard from both Lukeh and James who attended the Red Bull Speed Jam in Cardiff, with some great pictures and words about their day out. It seems Red Bull are pulling out all the stops at the moment to keep the crowds entertained, so well done to them.
  • There's also news doing the rounds that Narain Karthikeyan has found himself sponsorship to be driving at the Indian Grand Prix, but are HRT prepared to give him the opportunity? I suppose if the price is right, any opportunity turns into a business transaction. I am always surprised at the lengths F1 goes to trying to get drivers into cars for home races.

We finished recording the latest episode of F1 Debrief last night, so it should be released at some point during the day. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for that one, and have a fabulous Monday!

I remember how big news it was when BBC announced F1 will be broadcast in HD.

Here we had to put up with the inferior definition and old 4:3 format. And then yesterday while browsing the TV menu I spotted ESPN HD channel. I swear it was not there few days ago. Curious me went on to check what are they showing. And I saw an add for F1 ...

So, without telling anybody, they brought us F1 in HD. There was no announcement, till now there is not a mention on espnstar.com nothing ...

In any case, dilema - stay on with BBC over internet or go HD on big screen but put up with ads and the dreadful commentary ...

  • Amy05/09/2011 at 08:42

I go HD on big screen, switch to BBC over internet in the adbreaks. Although I guess I have BBC commentary anyway on my TV so thats not an issue.

the events over internet and TV are not exactly time synchronized, 15-20 secs lag ... so would not work. and jumping from TV to computer is not very enjoyable ...

I do not believe so, because when I check the calendar for March the whole month is available except Thu - Sun on GP week. But the moment I add Wed and Mon all the rooms become miraculously available. If I check any other day I can add children to the booking, for GP week I can't , I must book extra room ... I think I am going to write a friendly email to the hotel and ask for some clarification :-)

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - Which driver, who died on 5 Sep, was employed by Cooper Cars and Brabham before taking his 1st win with Team Lotus?

I think a lot of that is because the current series is made for US TV with lots of ads, so on the BBC they need to fill the time somehow. Doesn't make it less annoying.

That's frustrating. Maybe instead of emailing them you should consider another hotel.. unless they all do it?

Good work, how was the weekend?

Good weekend, but I forgot how grey and miserable Rockingham is. It really feels like a circuit in the middle of an industrial estate - probably because it is!!

Sadly, the leftovers of the failed CART attempt makes it feel quite desolate - all the grandstands from the original events are still up (capacity 52,000), so it always feels as it if you are in a big empty space.

Good weekend, but I forgot how grey and miserable Rockingham is. It really feels like a circuit in the middle of an industrial estate - probably because it is!!

It is a bit bleak sometimes. I went to the CART events and it was a good venue with enough people there, just in the wrong place. I can certainly see how it might be a bit soulless for a smaller event. You'd need binoculars to see the road course from the stands.

    Nice. Same one?

Yeah a transfer of my current job. I was keen to keep my pay and terms etc. on a part time basis. It's much better than I'd be able to get in a normal part time student job.

I may get impatient waiting for her to make the time though and just make the trip on the train + 20 minute walk.

It's nowhere near as convenient to reach as the older store but I am willing to make the effort for the BIGGEST store. Plus as a cardholder I get free hot dogs in the first week they're open :D Plus I need a couple of bags of meatballs for my freezer.

It's a video about a man who has built a mini-wooden pieces esculture of the Tower of Pisa.

A good song choice (something different, for once). Highlights include a very good edit on the Hamilton-Kobayashi crash, as well as generous servings of Rob (even if he's not in a good mood).

He had no idea where hid lead was, as opposed to the structure.

    Freddie Mercury stuff today.

Lotus unveils Evora S in honor of Freddie Mercury

While I'm not so keen on what I think is commercializing the Lotus name too much, I do like that they're auctioning it off for charity.

Also, if you go to the Google site, their video doodle for Freddie is quite something as well.

Hehehee... Colin Chapman had absolutely no qualms about commercialising the Lotus name - in fact, he was one of the first to do it in F1.

Heh. Fair point. But I do think opening up to sponsors is different to making one-off Lotuses that don't really contribute to the brand. Do you see Ferrari making special one-off editions of their car, for example? I mean, they do make customized ones for paying customers, but that's not really as a marketing exercise, which this one is.

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/09/2011 at 15:58

Exactly. Do luxury car manufacturers need to market their wares? I don't see Lambo doing it, or Bugatti. They stay above that.

I've only ever seen Lambo in GT sportscar racing. For ages, I thought Bugatti had gone under such is their utter silence in the car and motorsport industry.

It didn't stop Lambo from selling cars, though. Also, the Bugatti Veyron got a lot of publicity with nary an ad - because they made a very good car. If Lotus want to be treated seriously as a luxury carmaker, I think they should act like one and stay above the marketing fray, letting the cars speak for themselves.

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/09/2011 at 16:04

agreed. the problem with those is we need a studio setup permanently. we can't build it every day or several times a day and we have no room for a fixed set up. might do some more for fun during the off-season or something. good to experiment.

Is there still that vast hole at (the former) Darlington Circuit that you may be able to fill in with a pre-fab bunker and then just add add the soli to cover it over with.?

Bah! You just make sure that the underground part becomes the basement and you build the bigger part on top of it. As long as your former entrence way beomes the stairway, you are set.

If you want to see a bunker built right, check out the three massive flaktowers of Berlin. Castles built during WWII to hold Anti-Airraft guns.....

Is she a fan of him? Now hi is in italy, i think.

She became a fan during the world cup. He moved to Milan to play for Inter. Then after he moved there Inter discovered he could not play in the Champions League because he already played in the Europa League this season

Good player, although he is becoming old.

  • RG05/09/2011 at 18:17

Eto'o is the man. 30 million for moving to a russian team. 20 million par year. 3 year contracto.

    - 30+20+20+20=90 millions euros in three years.

Only lasts until the knockout rounds.

  • RG05/09/2011 at 18:38

I thought it lasted for the whole season. I may be wrong... It explains many things

Only if its in the same competition.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2011 at 18:38

What kind of a rule is that?

Players are only allowed to represent one team in European competitions in any season. It's a standard rule in any football cup competitions. If a club signs a player who has played in the FA cup for another team earlier in the season he cannot represent them in that competition.

It stops teams in the late stages of cup competitions signing up a lot of top players who can then go back to their previous clubs after the cup is finished. Transfer windows now make that impossible but there was a time.....

  • Steven Roy05/09/2011 at 18:40

Maybe its Jenson's retirement plan during McLaren. You just do not expect McLaren to screw up as badly as they did during Spa qualifying...

I must have missed something, Jenson's grid position was the team's fault... I thought he said he misunderstood

  • jackie05/09/2011 at 20:35

Just outside. We don't operate in Soton itself. Plans to open early next year I think.

I used to live in Southampton whilst studing for a PG degree, loved the place, I'd go back in a minute to live there

Someone has made a film about the disasters that happened to Apollo 18. I thought the only disaster that happened to it was that it was cancelled like all the others after 17. No according to the film.

I'm really looking forward to moving there. It looks like an awesome place to live. The studying I'm not so sure about but....

You're going to the good uni I hope, and not the bad one in town that I went to. Bad experiences meant I didn't like the city very much, the only thing I liked was being independent from home. Heard lots of better things about the other one. Better location, atmosphere, courses..

  • Alison05/09/2011 at 20:40

Wonder if that was a case of 'grass is greener' though :)

Probably is, I am going to Southampton University though yeah.

Did you say what shop it is? Wondering if I know it or if it is worth driving the 90 minutes to harrass you for a discount. :)

I must have missed something, Jenson's grid position was the team's fault... I thought he said he misunderstood

The part that you missed was calling Jenson's position in Spa the team's fault I say McLaren wanted to ensure Hamilton was ahead of Button under circumstances that should have had Button blown Hamilton out of the water. As everyone is saying, Button got screwed. If your McLaren, you do not screw a driver like that by accident, you are just too good a team for that. That only leaves that what McLaren did was done by design....

  • Alison05/09/2011 at 20:44

No discounts available I'm afraid. Not even for staff. MEANIES!

Cue conspiracy theory, I don't buy into that one

Sounds like nonsense. Why would they make themselves a laughing stock on purpose?

  • Steven Roy05/09/2011 at 20:48

Sounds like nonsense. Why would they make themselves a laughing stock on purpose?

I remember when Heikki was Lewis's tea mates there were a lot of people who thought the team was totally biased to Lewis and they didn't want their second driver to win. The theory was the team would not sign a proven winner as his team mate because Lewis ran the team

Yeah should be a good time. The common and the centre of town are really nice places in spring/summer especially.

  • Jordan F105/09/2011 at 20:58

Simple to ensure Hamilton get a better grid positon than Button. Button should have been able to cobber Hamilton in wet conditions, right? Maybe Hamilton a little more on the edge than we think he is and just needs to have it proven that the team is behind him 100%.

Like I said, McLaren is too good a team to screw up like that....So there's another reason for that.

And what laughing stock. Hamilton got 2nd place right.....so that's good.

Although I would have expected Button to get pole by more than a second in those conditions, if McLaren really wanted the two drivers to race.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2011 at 21:00

Button should have been able to cobber Hamilton in wet conditions, right?

Why? Lewis seems pretty good in the wet to me

The whole everything that Button has as advantages - the smoother driver, the ability to drive the car under changeable conditions, the wet weather weather expect and all that stuff.

Plus Hamilton is going though a bit of a rough spell with all the incidents he has had.

So create a situation where the favoured driver has a better gird position then his teammate and see teh boast inthe ego it gives him. It turned out well, Hamilton got 2nd place right?

    Button who?

Button seems to make good calls in changeable conditions but I don't think in actual driving ability in those conditions he is any better than Lewis.

Plus Hamilton is going though a bit of a rough spell with all the incidents he has had.

    True

I don't believe McLaren would do that deliberately. Even if the management wanted to do that why would Button's engineer do it?

The same thing happened to diResta and it is not in FIF1's interest to take the pressure off Sutil

The same reason why we all listen to bosses who's decisions we disagree with. It pays the bills.

I've spent some of the evening updating my YouTube channel with a few things from last year's Silverstone 1000km. They are quite short but since they aren't very good I didn't stitch them together to make a long one. I'd planned to get around to writing about it (after 51 weeks..) but since I couldn't link to videos which weren't there I busied myself with uploading. :)

I also discovered Picasa can output photo slideshows as video so we'll see if that looks okay in a blog post. Hopefully I'll write that Tuesday or Wednesday.

    Anyway here's the channel.
