Hello out there, we're on the air and it's Sunday night tonight. I have returned, and once again in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fashion, to be the super-sub on another daily. This time Lou isn't feeling too grand, and of course we all wish that she gets better soon.
So, Formula 1 news, and as per tradition for whenever I do a daily, there is absolutely none to talk about. Sauber did some testing at Vairano with Esteban Gutierrez, that's about as high as I can go really. How fun. Lewis Hamilton though did appear on the new Jonathan Ross Show on ITV, which also featured several highlights including his latest crash in Spa, that my friends I find interesting. I don't remember the BBC ever showing F1 coverage other than at the Sports Personality of the Year.
So lets broaden our horizons, football! And lets not bother with this pointless international football (apart from poor old Scotland, drawing 2-2 with the Czech's after the away team were awarded a penalty that never was, shame...), but yesterday was Non-League Day! I popped myself along to watch Gateshead beat Alfreton Town 2-0 to continue their unbeaten start of the season, as they find themselves in second place of the Blue Square Premier, level with Wrexham, but behind on goal difference. 'Heed Army!
In this week's not-so-subtle dig involving Caroline Wozniacki, Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald, Wozniacki's new boyfriend Rory McIlroy has said "I think we definitely spur each other on," which is great, as Wozniacki really needs to win her first major to justify being number one, and McIlroy really needs to stop spending time with his sponsors and start doing a bit better in the European Tour to take down Donald, who isn't going to be winning a major any time soon.
Speedway time! And last week was supposed to be my attempt at introducing everyone to the wonders of the sport. Sadly my internet decided it wouldn't play ball and didn't allow me online. I think that's a conspiracy. Although it was probably a relief as the track at Torun failed to produce much entertainment. The particular highlights was the wildcard Darcy Ward, in his first Grand Prix outing, finishing 3rd, another win for the unpredictable Swede Andreas Jonsson, and the only Brit in the GP, Chris "Bomber" Harris scoring 0 points from 5 rides. Actually... that isn't really a highlight. The next Grand Prix is the Nordic Grand Prix in Vojens, which is this Saturday evening (hint, hint).
I'll leave you with two things. Firstly a heart warming tale from the world of football. Former Fulham, Tottenham and Sunderland midfielder Steed Malbranque has retired from football at the age of 31 to look after his ill son, who has cancer. Certainly a good-hearted individual.
Secondly, it is the Rugby World Cup on Friday being held in New Zealand, so, despite it being the wrong code played by those down south, it is still an adequate time of one of the few moments England were World Champions:
ooh, supersub daily. cheers rg.
Hey RG, have you tried the Speedway GP game for the iOS yet?
I probably would have if I had an Apple product to play it on.
Oh and there you go NASCAR - two drivers got together so one took the other out in revenge. Not my style really!
missed lewis on tv, was he any good?
Looking forward to the Rugby World Cup, even if timezones mean missing a lot of it
And last week was supposed to be my attempt at introducing everyone to the wonders of the sport.
ooooops. i forgot.
That might help. Well if get a chance it's worth checking out.
Although the trailer had me laughing with Harris being last in a heat. It's got the realism nailed on.
Who is showing it on TV in the UK? I'm not keen hanging out at the Aussie pub if I can help it...
Sadly I think it is ITV
Hmm. I am sure I can see it if I really wanted to. Thing is, I'm not too fussed about rugby and I'm not too keen watching it with a bunch of expats first thing in the morning.
It is enjoyable to watch, more so than football for me, but I wouldn't make a point of going out at 8am to find it on TV somewhere.
I got bored of it because they play the same people in the same tournaments year in, year out.
Mm I got a bit bored in the Six Nations, but this is the World Cup and it is only every few years, and the last one is what got me watching the game more often. I like underdogs and the USA really impressed last WC
Mr C, if you aren't into the helicopter jumping, this may not be on your list either, but the camera looks cool.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWfph3iNC-k
no.
I can't believe how close he got to the guy on the ground taking pictures!
I don't think the guy taking the pics could believe it either. :)
madness is what it is.
It's really amazing to watch it. It's like he's flying, but it's just so dangerous.. NOTHING can go wrong or that's it.
That looks like so much fun
I know they can work a lot of this out accurately but it only takes a few mph of wind speed to dump him in the rocks. Turning on his side dumps all the lift that he is creating so that looks very risky
Yeah. I've only ever seen them do that in wide open spaces, not going through trees like that.
Like high altitude free fall
yeah. Like human flying squirrels.
Except with no trees
and a helmet cam.
there were trees. plenty of trees!
I was saying that I'd never seen that part before. Yike.
ah, i see. yes. i'm still not doing it.
Not in the high altitude stuff we were discussing
Jonathan Ross show. Not sure what time Lewis is on it

ta.
23 minutes
ooh, i left it running, i must be about there.
hehe, lewis is great in this interview. must be the best i've seen him.
He is growing into his role. Much more natural now but still has all the classic racing driver traits. Didn't want to see the crash but was happy with the clip of the win. Had to know what was in the bottle etc
Morning all.
I've written an update in my post about the spanish politics.
You can read it here: http://www.martif1.com.
I may write an english version this afternoon.
Hohoho this post has reached 20 visits in less than one hour.
Although I've read some bad words about me on twitter, but I don't care about them.
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
Morning all, if anyone's interested I've uploaded my photos from yesterday
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lukehmuse/sets/72157627589454996/
lukeh, you still around chap?
*waves*
yay!
we're just putting together a speed jam post, with a couple of pics from people who were there. could we use one or two of yours, and if so, could you maybe sum up the day in a paragraph or so too?
Yeah of course, I'm just cleaning up at the moment (hoovering is worryingly my F1 fix for the day) but I'll send something your way in a little bit. Feel free to use any photos though
legend. thank you!
Excellent pictures. Looks like a very colourful day out!
Thanks for the daily RG. Super supersubbing.
No problemo, have sent you a bit of writing :)
Morning from a Hot Hazy, and Humid Tundraland, Thunderstorms are expected later this afternoon, so no human flying squirrel flights around here please, Mr C. ....:P
yay. received.
never!
I am fighting wordpress... i now understand the pain!
it's awful isn't it?
It starts out so nice and siple, it luss you into thinking all you want to do is possible.
...then it slaps you with a soggy salmon
Dont suppose you know of a a plugin so you can style your own blockquotes?
Brilliant guest post ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/red-bull-get-up-to-speed-in-cardiff
Or even just not have ugly standard ones?
we wrote our own. sorry.
It is like everything else, you have to learn or figure out it quirks and accept them for what they are, but it does help to pick up some else's code to see how they do this. Saltire gave me a free driver's lesson regarding images when she posted her blog on my site, for example...
Hehe, i have an assistant who
is supposed to be doing all of thisdoes the codey parts.I shall add it too the mountain of things he needs to fix :)
todo: fix wordpress
easy.
Speaking of Wordpress, I still have to set up a "Konversion Korner" on my website section as I now have a crazy idea of turning a WWII US Air Force mechanic into a Williams Front Jack man from a very specific race a few years ago...
This conversion will still be in the concept stage as it will require re-position of the arms into a more realistic position.
Not for the faint-hearted, Tony Kanaan's brakes failed in morning warm-up today and he only slowed down because he hit Castroneves. He's okay and so is Helio.
Video - http://t.co/sctcHVs
Just watched that after seeing your tweets. Wow. It makes me like Helio even more that he jumped out of his own car to go check on TK. He was the first responder to him.
You really don't expect it at all. Amazing no one was hurt.
Check out :57. He comes within feet of that track marshall. Whoa.
I noticed, he's probably the luckiest of all because he wasn't in a safety cell
marshal nearly got totalled.
Best Baltimore video I've seen (apologies if it's a repost):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI67z9R5XLM
Best part is after all this, they qualify on class pole and win their class! :O
I haven't seen the whole incident. Awesome. :)
pat described it, but i hadn't seen the clip.
That was crazy good stuff! :D What time is the race?
Yeah very lucky.
TK on Helio: "He saved my life"
The ALMS race with these cars was last night at 9.30pm UK, it was good fun.
The IndyCar race coverage starts at 7pm UK with the race green at 7.45pm. I'm seeing suggetions on Twitter that they may start the race from turn 3 instead of the front straight.

Watched the video this morning, the onboard from Helio's car, and honestly it's one of the scariest wrecks I've ever seen.
That video is incredibly scary. Yeeesh...

NASCAR in Cardiff is a weird concept. Well done Red Bull for doing it
FYI, it's very hot and humid today. It hasn't been like this for a month or so. Very uncomfortable for drivers, for sure. 86F/30C
Thanks
I watched the end of Indy Lights. They said the weekend is sold out. That's good.
Thanks... just in time to see a Danica commercial.
No live coverage in Canada.
Incredible
That should make it even more interesting
It's the link you posted for the last race
I see :)
I hadn't started looking for a feed yet
Tell me about it... I got the ALMS race last evening, but no INDY. How do these guys think you can build fan loyalty?
Especially being in North America, I could understand it if it had been here
@FTHurley
Wow, the last street race for the current Dallara. It's much-maligned, but it deserves credit for serving well where it was never meant to.
One of the Indy Lights guys, the older guy, Willy T. Ribbs, couldn't finish the race because it was so physically demanding.
He is way too old to be racing at that level
He's moving on to something else now, that was his last open wheel race, he said.
Sort of like Allan Jones in G.P. Masters?
It's about 20 years too late for his last single seater race
Yes. A total disconnect between self image and reality
It makes me sad when people hold on for too long and don't have anything else. :(
I understand Jones more because he was coming back to race a bunch of other old guys. The difference was none of them had let themselves go to the level he had and some of them were still incredibly fit
Tony George on the grid
Danica is pathetic.
no freaking personality
I think the Willy T Ribbs thing was more of a publicity stunt than anything.
Danica needs to 'prepare' for an interview. Shows everything she says is an act. Even her voice changed once she had 'prepared' herself
Hinchcliffe....sharp guy
Alright everyone, sing it with me
"This is the dawning of our brave new world..."
yep.
A guy at work has a crush on Danica and does not "get" that she's not a good driver. Simona's a better driver and has a fun personality
That is the weirdest ad. 75% of it is about a fake product
The same 3 commercials for 4 hours. Good times.
:D
:D
Simona is very cool and takes it all in stride, it seems, even with a horrible season, including still wearing those gloves from the burns. I love her.
good for the sport though. i'm watching nascar next year to see how she does. would i follow simona to nascar? nope.
Bernie wants a girl in F1 and Simona's the only candidate right now. Robin Miller reported such late last year.
oh don't get fancy, just sing it. We have a race to get underway!
:)
bet he doesn't. bernie might want danica in f1, but that's about it.
It will be interesting to see the reception she gets there because NASCAR does not 'need' a gimmick like her. She is only going into the second division anyway.
I'm my dad's daughter. :)
None of the actual F1 media has mentioned it
She has a TV audience who only want to see her
She had one top ten this year. As long as she's on ovals, she does better. But will never be great.
yeah, and the fans can be a lot more venomous with criticism, I think. It will be interesting.
Once she steps up to Cup races she will get no coverage and no preferential treatment because they have all the big names they can handle. Theyeven have Earnhard junior who is like their own Danica
Miller was at lunch with an Indy team owner with F1 ties when Bernie called and asked if he knew of any girls that could drive. The only name that was mentioned was Simona. That may have just been a crazy idea. I'd like to know if Joe has any info on same
Beautiful
is Bob Jenkins mispronouncing more words than usual?
New venue, tech difficulties.
I noticed that, too. Didn't know it was possible.
Didn't he say Maury-lond?
Somebody might want to give him the Cincinati pre-hospital stroke checklist test
I was just thinking the same thing.
Vicki's freakin' out. She's not gonna chat. :)
Imagine getting two seater run and having to spend the time answeing dub questions
I'd be more nervous about talking on tv than the ride.
Ok, how long until Rahal gets taken out or takes himself out this time?
and now they've turned it loose Versus are completely ignoring it
He does have a problem with bad luck. Just wondering how ugly the lineup will be
I would be gutted that I just couldn't enjoy it.
Also I thought Al jr worked in race control. How can he do that from the two seater?
Viso is in row 4. eek.
I just can't see the start being clean. There is bound to be a first corner pile up
Just don't want it all strung out
Being IndyCar I doubt they can wait till the first corner...
Why are they sorting tyre barriers now?
I can imagine everyone being so careful to avoid a crash and that causing a crash because no-one expected the car in front to be so slow
Oh my god!! My PC has brokendown!! (angry like Hamilton in Hungary 2007)
Why?? Now I am online with my little netbook, but my super-mega-ultra-powerful dell doesn't work.
Bad timing
The chicane is just before they need to go two wide for the start?
I'm in shock.
Tread can or rat cam?
me too!
they made it
Never seen a kerb cam in the middle of the track before
ALMS skipped the chicane for the start, thought these would too
Because there were only 3 rows two wide as everyone else had the chicane to deal with
It's cool. I like it.
Seems the obvious thing to do
I hope it is stuck down better than the manhole covers
That's why I thought maybe it was a rat cam.
I assume it is in a manhole cover so I hope the rates don't get at the cables
Bob Jenkins isn't actually making sense today. (More than usual)
I really do not like him.
Maybe they hired one of the rats to hold the camera.
:D
I like this split screen shows the driver's view and what it looks like from the outside.
During a race they are showing what happened on Friday???????
PC pit-stop. My father is in my room, trying to solve my problems.
Always intersting to see the computers' "heart"
Good stuff but a bit small on a web feed
Thanks for covering my daily for me R.G, you're a star :) Thanks also for the link to the Lewis Hamilton Jonathan Ross chat, haven't seen that yet!
Pics from the weekend from Marshall Pruett

Gives the show link. Lewis is 23 minutes into the show
Seems odd
Bourdais stuck in 3rd gear
No problem, anytime!
I thought Dixon was holding up the queue because he is on blacks
Someone has a link to watch that race you're talking about?

Nice move
good job Simona
Thanks Steve :)
Dixon pits
yay Simona.
I had never watched IndyCar before. Let's see what those americans do...
This race is unusual. It's the first race on a new street track. Half the track is very bumpy
Funny then! :) I've seen the Pit-Lane looks like a parking...
Kanaan passes Patrick, right in the place his brakes failed this morning, brave
They're using part of the Camden Yard building, famous baseball stadium.
Nice move by Kanaan. He is clearly becoming confident in a car they just put together with bits before the race
Love super slo mo.
My American culture is nothing...
Does anyone know how many laps they can do on a tank of fuel here? Do the teams know that in racing conditions?
I think they were trying to stretch to 42
Thanks. So it looks like two stops for everyone
No worries. I'm not too up on my Spanish culture. We can help each other. :)
I love that Indycar mechanics put a hand on the front wheel of the car as it leaves the pits like they are pushing it
Power missed the chicane
Should be a penalty but apparently not
Just found out that F1 Timing App costs 16€,
As some of you say... W00t!
Seems Uncle Bernie has discovered the Apple world!
"at the discretion of the...blah blah blah"?
And you say you have no American culture
Did he slow down? I completely missed it
Brundle liked Miller's grid walk
@PippaMann @kazb711 sorry I missed this guy's Indy grid run. He's got everyone talking so he's done his job very well by the sounds of it.
Anyone else want to buy a set of firestones?
I have Sidepodcast culture.
They reckon he braked early after it to make sure he didn't go faster that lap
That's mostly UK culture. :)
Steven, I think the cars can go much farther, but everyone pitting early got everyone nervous about strategy
Yes. As soon as one of the leaders pits the others have to in case there is a yellow.
Power got a 3 second penalty
Race control - where the magic happens.
Indycar race control looks like a sports bar
Sensible to make him serve it on-track rather than a stop/go
That's not a nice thing to say with Al jr in there
30 laps, no Safety Car. I'm impressed.
Ironic that a man named Power gets a penalty.
"And Power is forced to shut down for 3 seconds"...
Full stop. I'll never repeat that.
I'm amazed
I have no idea who al jr is let alone al snr!
IndyCar. Always full of surprises.
Al Unser Jr, once arrested for DUI
Both were very successful Indycar drivers but jr had an alcohol problem
domestic violence as well
Ah! I have heard of the Unsers
Looks like he is in the right place then
Scheckter parked on track
Pitting now means they can go the distance without re-fuelling
SC for a stalled Scheckter
nice looking car....too bad
Dixon passing Simona under yellows but gave it back
I see they didn't get my all caps tweet from before, to stop talking over the team radios or don't bother airing them.
Lee McKenzie is at the restaurant with the Chandhok menu.
http://t.co/XWSnD5c
I think we'll have to arrange a visit.
yay!
He gets everywhere
Good evening :)
I'm so looking forward to the rugby! :D
I thought you were going to Southampton not Rugby
*groan*
If you want better punch lines you need to feed me better openers
The rugby doesn't start for a week
The daily reminded me though :)
Now it makes sense.
Wonder how the two wide re-start will work
Yellow
At least someone understands me.
That is like the Pau F3000 race from years ago
Oops
That answers that.
Hillarity
:D
This is a bit like the Beijing A1GP...
I thought they were good, then they got to the hairpin..
just opened a can of red bull and found a speed jam code on the ring pull.
really should read instructions more carefully. oops.
I can't believe this did not happen at the start of the race
Dixon has a left rear puncture
That was an insane move by Briscoe. That move was way too late to ever work
very very optimistic
:)
I guess the next question is will yellows breed yellows and the next re-start result in a similar mess.
From @akwaxy in the stands
http://t.co/VraP8uJ
Kanaan jumped from near the back to 9th, avoiding that melee!
He went right up the inside. There were about 12 cars parked and several damaged
Sometimes you get run over by someone and have to start from the back, other times you find an open lane!
:)
Simona 5th. Good news
woo hoo!
I assume Briscoe is going to get a penalty for that
I think I saw her hit the brakes so she didn't get into that mess.
How can you re-position cars as they were prior to an incident?????
They are randomly reordering the field??
If race control screwed up, BB made up the rules last time out.
They are pretending the crash did not happen
Kanaan gained all those positions due to intelligence but loses them all because the incident officially did not happen
WHAT?
Stupidf
They are putting the cars back in the positions they were in as the yellow came out. So they are saying the first contact happened but all those who ended up parked get there positions back
Crazy
Why? I don't get this.
No-one does
That is insane.
I've got a real and sudden urge to buy a whiteboard. Don't know what I'd do with it but I want it!!
RT @Crushr99: @99forever TK can't pass 'disabled' cars under yellow, That's why Hildebrand won the 2011 Indy 500. #IndyCar #Not
Best wait till you move or it is one more thing to move
Good idea. I'll "save it for later" then. Maybe the urge will have passed later.
That too
TK is apparently now shown 11th so it isn't quite as bad.. maybe.
He passed 12 parked cars so unless they have damage or have pitted he should be behind them
Positions given back to those who got stuck, not those involved in contact.
I'm confused as to who should be where now so just rolling with it..
Same
Poor Helio. Must be awful to lose positions because of someone else's stupidity :)
Same except I disagree with whatever it is they have done.
This yellow is ridiculously long
Briscoe, sent to end of the line
What is Rahal doing?
yep
Simona 4th :)
Doing great
Does anyone in the booth know what they are talking about?
No. Mute is my friend.
If they do they don't know how to explain it
One just said that because of all the caution laps the leaders are going to have to pit for fuel much sooner?? Really?
But then I can't hear the cars. :(
One of them just said someone was losing 3 laps per second.
They should do what the BBC used to do with the football and just mute the commentators and just have track side noise.
So where was Power, Mr. Director?
This coverage is making me cranky.
That would be heaven. :)
They had the perfect high camera shot for the earlier stop then didn't show it for the lead
Driver of the race has to be TK
Simona leads for a little while, until she pits. yay. :)
yikes
...and goes to the back now. :(
Love to see TK in 3rd, but I want Dario up there, too.
So Servia's gotta crash out. :)
a caution would help matters..
No he needs to stay where he is to keep the championship interesting.
Or get passed by both of them
oh, okay. :)
Power will close the gap here and probably at Motegi too, since they are running the road course there (unless they refuse to go). Then the last two are ovals which is Dario territory
I can deal with that. Dario should stay where he is.
*sends telepathic signals*
Do we really need to see everyone in the race and ignore what is happening in the race?
He is half a second behind TK. I think he has his tinfoil helmet on to block your signals
It pays the bills. NASCAR does it too. It gives each team some guaranteed TV time. It was one of my questions at Joe in MTL 2010.
The way I figure it, they've rarely been able to do that "Through the Grid" feature because usually it's chaos on track.
harumph. I'll have to have a word with him about that.
Crash
Sato
Local yellow only
Boo Sato, that's a shame. He was quick and had caught the Dario group
I wonder if Power will smile when he wins? I haven't seen him smile in ages. He seems a bit of a tortured soul.
He should do, he was dominant
There it is. :)
Someone hand him a drink, for goodness sake.
Great, my feed switched to a NASCAR channel showing commercials, instead of hearing postrace interviews.
An Indycar race finishes with a driver saying the officiating was terrible and Barnard said one thing in the drivers meeting then did something different.
There seems to be something familiar about that
Mine just died after Rahal had a go at Barnard
I suspect he won't have a job by the time the new season comes around
I am stunned he still has it.
Just thinking back to the race that ended up in an enquiry. Am I right in thinking that the people involved in the crashes that ended the race were given back the positions they had before they crashed? If so that is the opposite of what happened today.
They interviewed TK. He said the usual stuff and said his career has been full of drama followed by happy endings, so he was glad he had a good result today after the crash this morning.

Dario interview now
Now Dixon
Thanks
Some speculated that perhaps it is better to keep him until the offseason, give them time to find someone new
These guys all look so wiped out, more than usual.
I might buy myself a cool diary to keep the whiteboard at bay :D
buy a filofax ;)
Too expensive!!
buy a filofax looky likey?
I think I want a dodo diary http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1903001862/ref=oss_product
Is it the last of it's kind?
:)
Heh! Tony Cotman / @nzrconsulting
Was leaving RC & had to get a wheel back from a fan who stole it from @hinchtown @newmanhaas car. Said he found it on wall.
Briscoe has some interesting comments too on his Twitter feed @RyanBriscoe6
Just started following him. Thanks for RT'ing so I saw the first few.
He just mentioned the safety truck after turn 1 on the start.
It only seems a few weeks since we were talking about the F3 championship starting and now Felipe Nasr has won it
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/94254
It feels to early to be wrapping up titles
I just found out Danica finished 6th not 7th, Tags overshot the chicane on the last lap and was moved back a place
I haven't paid much attention to F3 this year but there seem to have been quite a few multiple race winners so I am surprised it is wrapped up this early
Blog post from Olly Gavin, #4 Corvette in ALMS on the race last night in Baltimore. Turns out the turn 1 crash caused him to deal with exhaust fumes for the rest of the race.
http://www.olivergavin.com/2011/09/olly-battles-through-to-3rd-in-baltimore/
That has to be awful
he tweeted something earlier about exhaust and burning carbon fiber. :(
