Hello out there, we're on the air and it's Sunday night tonight. I have returned, and once again in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fashion, to be the super-sub on another daily. This time Lou isn't feeling too grand, and of course we all wish that she gets better soon.

So, Formula 1 news, and as per tradition for whenever I do a daily, there is absolutely none to talk about. Sauber did some testing at Vairano with Esteban Gutierrez, that's about as high as I can go really. How fun. Lewis Hamilton though did appear on the new Jonathan Ross Show on ITV, which also featured several highlights including his latest crash in Spa, that my friends I find interesting. I don't remember the BBC ever showing F1 coverage other than at the Sports Personality of the Year.

So lets broaden our horizons, football! And lets not bother with this pointless international football (apart from poor old Scotland, drawing 2-2 with the Czech's after the away team were awarded a penalty that never was, shame...), but yesterday was Non-League Day! I popped myself along to watch Gateshead beat Alfreton Town 2-0 to continue their unbeaten start of the season, as they find themselves in second place of the Blue Square Premier, level with Wrexham, but behind on goal difference. 'Heed Army!

In this week's not-so-subtle dig involving Caroline Wozniacki, Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald, Wozniacki's new boyfriend Rory McIlroy has said "I think we definitely spur each other on," which is great, as Wozniacki really needs to win her first major to justify being number one, and McIlroy really needs to stop spending time with his sponsors and start doing a bit better in the European Tour to take down Donald, who isn't going to be winning a major any time soon.

Speedway time! And last week was supposed to be my attempt at introducing everyone to the wonders of the sport. Sadly my internet decided it wouldn't play ball and didn't allow me online. I think that's a conspiracy. Although it was probably a relief as the track at Torun failed to produce much entertainment. The particular highlights was the wildcard Darcy Ward, in his first Grand Prix outing, finishing 3rd, another win for the unpredictable Swede Andreas Jonsson, and the only Brit in the GP, Chris "Bomber" Harris scoring 0 points from 5 rides. Actually... that isn't really a highlight. The next Grand Prix is the Nordic Grand Prix in Vojens, which is this Saturday evening (hint, hint).

I'll leave you with two things. Firstly a heart warming tale from the world of football. Former Fulham, Tottenham and Sunderland midfielder Steed Malbranque has retired from football at the age of 31 to look after his ill son, who has cancer. Certainly a good-hearted individual.

Secondly, it is the Rugby World Cup on Friday being held in New Zealand, so, despite it being the wrong code played by those down south, it is still an adequate time of one of the few moments England were World Champions:

I probably would have if I had an Apple product to play it on.

  • Rubbergoat03/09/2011 at 23:28

Oh and there you go NASCAR - two drivers got together so one took the other out in revenge. Not my style really!

  • Mr C03/09/2011 at 23:28

Although the trailer had me laughing with Harris being last in a heat. It's got the realism nailed on.

Who is showing it on TV in the UK? I'm not keen hanging out at the Aussie pub if I can help it...

Sadly I think it is ITV

Hmm. I am sure I can see it if I really wanted to. Thing is, I'm not too fussed about rugby and I'm not too keen watching it with a bunch of expats first thing in the morning.

It is enjoyable to watch, more so than football for me, but I wouldn't make a point of going out at 8am to find it on TV somewhere.

I got bored of it because they play the same people in the same tournaments year in, year out.

Mm I got a bit bored in the Six Nations, but this is the World Cup and it is only every few years, and the last one is what got me watching the game more often. I like underdogs and the USA really impressed last WC

I know they can work a lot of this out accurately but it only takes a few mph of wind speed to dump him in the rocks. Turning on his side dumps all the lift that he is creating so that looks very risky

He is growing into his role. Much more natural now but still has all the classic racing driver traits. Didn't want to see the crash but was happy with the clip of the win. Had to know what was in the bottle etc

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - The first four drivers who qualified for the 1960 Italian GP finished in the same order on this day, but who won?

It is like everything else, you have to learn or figure out it quirks and accept them for what they are, but it does help to pick up some else's code to see how they do this. Saltire gave me a free driver's lesson regarding images when she posted her blog on my site, for example...

Speaking of Wordpress, I still have to set up a "Konversion Korner" on my website section as I now have a crazy idea of turning a WWII US Air Force mechanic into a Williams Front Jack man from a very specific race a few years ago...

This conversion will still be in the concept stage as it will require re-position of the arms into a more realistic position.

  • Joe in Fla04/09/2011 at 18:31

    Danica is pathetic.

    no freaking personality

  • Bert04/09/2011 at 18:32

I understand Jones more because he was coming back to race a bunch of other old guys. The difference was none of them had let themselves go to the level he had and some of them were still incredibly fit

I think the Willy T Ribbs thing was more of a publicity stunt than anything.

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 18:32

Danica needs to 'prepare' for an interview. Shows everything she says is an act. Even her voice changed once she had 'prepared' herself

  • Joe in Fla04/09/2011 at 18:33

    Hinchcliffe....sharp guy

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 18:35

Alright everyone, sing it with me

"This is the dawning of our brave new world..."

    yep.

  • Joe in Fla04/09/2011 at 18:36

A guy at work has a crush on Danica and does not "get" that she's not a good driver. Simona's a better driver and has a fun personality

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 18:36

That is the weirdest ad. 75% of it is about a fake product

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 18:36

"This is the dawning of our brave new world..."

The same 3 commercials for 4 hours. Good times.

Simona is very cool and takes it all in stride, it seems, even with a horrible season, including still wearing those gloves from the burns. I love her.

good for the sport though. i'm watching nascar next year to see how she does. would i follow simona to nascar? nope.

Bernie wants a girl in F1 and Simona's the only candidate right now. Robin Miller reported such late last year.

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 18:39

oh don't get fancy, just sing it. We have a race to get underway!

    :)

It will be interesting to see the reception she gets there because NASCAR does not 'need' a gimmick like her. She is only going into the second division anyway.

She had one top ten this year. As long as she's on ovals, she does better. But will never be great.

yeah, and the fans can be a lot more venomous with criticism, I think. It will be interesting.

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 18:43

Once she steps up to Cup races she will get no coverage and no preferential treatment because they have all the big names they can handle. Theyeven have Earnhard junior who is like their own Danica

  • Joe in Fla04/09/2011 at 18:43

None of the actual F1 media has mentioned it

Miller was at lunch with an Indy team owner with F1 ties when Bernie called and asked if he knew of any girls that could drive. The only name that was mentioned was Simona. That may have just been a crazy idea. I'd like to know if Joe has any info on same

  • Pat W04/09/2011 at 19:56

Wonder how the two wide re-start will work

    That answers that.

I thought they were good, then they got to the hairpin..

  • Mr C04/09/2011 at 19:56

just opened a can of red bull and found a speed jam code on the ring pull.

really should read instructions more carefully. oops.

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 19:56

I can't believe this did not happen at the start of the race

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 19:56

Dixon has a left rear puncture

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 19:57

That was an insane move by Briscoe. That move was way too late to ever work

  • Joe in Fla04/09/2011 at 19:58

That was an insane move by Briscoe. That move was way too late to ever work

    very very optimistic

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 19:59

I guess the next question is will yellows breed yellows and the next re-start result in a similar mess.

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:01

Kanaan jumped from near the back to 9th, avoiding that melee!

He went right up the inside. There were about 12 cars parked and several damaged

  • Bert04/09/2011 at 20:01

Kanaan jumped from near the back to 9th, avoiding that melee!

Sometimes you get run over by someone and have to start from the back, other times you find an open lane!

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:02

    woo hoo!

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:03

I assume Briscoe is going to get a penalty for that

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:03

    woo hoo!

I think I saw her hit the brakes so she didn't get into that mess.

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:04

How can you re-position cars as they were prior to an incident?????

  • Pat W04/09/2011 at 20:05

They are randomly reordering the field??

  • Bert04/09/2011 at 20:05

How can you re-position cars as they were prior to an incident?????

If race control screwed up, BB made up the rules last time out.

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:05

They are randomly reordering the field??

They are pretending the crash did not happen

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:06

Kanaan gained all those positions due to intelligence but loses them all because the incident officially did not happen

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:06

They are pretending the crash did not happen

    WHAT?

  • Pat W04/09/2011 at 20:07

They are pretending the crash did not happen

    Stupidf

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:08

    WHAT?

They are putting the cars back in the positions they were in as the yellow came out. So they are saying the first contact happened but all those who ended up parked get there positions back

    Crazy

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:08

They are pretending the crash did not happen

    Why? I don't get this.

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:08

Good idea. I'll "save it for later" then. Maybe the urge will have passed later.

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:14

Maybe the urge will have passed later.

    That too

  • Pat W04/09/2011 at 20:17

Positions given back to those who got stuck, not those involved in contact.

If they do they don't know how to explain it

  • Joe in Fla04/09/2011 at 20:31

    No. Mute is my friend.

One just said that because of all the caution laps the leaders are going to have to pit for fuel much sooner?? Really?

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:31

    No. Mute is my friend.

But then I can't hear the cars. :(

One of them just said someone was losing 3 laps per second.

  • RG04/09/2011 at 20:37

But then I can't hear the cars. :(

They should do what the BBC used to do with the football and just mute the commentators and just have track side noise.

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:37

So where was Power, Mr. Director?

This coverage is making me cranky.

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:37

    That would be heaven. :)

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:38

So where was Power, Mr. Director?

This coverage is making me cranky.

They had the perfect high camera shot for the earlier stop then didn't show it for the lead

So Servia's gotta crash out. :)

  • Joe in Fla04/09/2011 at 20:45

    a caution would help matters..

  • Pat W04/09/2011 at 20:45

Love to see TK in 3rd, but I want Dario up there, too.

No he needs to stay where he is to keep the championship interesting.

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:45

So Servia's gotta crash out. :)

Or get passed by both of them

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:46

No he needs to stay where he is to keep the championship interesting.

    oh, okay. :)

  • Pat W04/09/2011 at 20:47

Power will close the gap here and probably at Motegi too, since they are running the road course there (unless they refuse to go). Then the last two are ovals which is Dario territory

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:48

Power will close the gap here and probably at Motegi too, since they are running the road course there (unless they refuse to go). Then the last two are ovals which is Dario territory

I can deal with that. Dario should stay where he is.

    *sends telepathic signals*

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:49

Do we really need to see everyone in the race and ignore what is happening in the race?

  • Steven Roy04/09/2011 at 20:49

    *sends telepathic signals*

He is half a second behind TK. I think he has his tinfoil helmet on to block your signals

  • Bert04/09/2011 at 20:50

It pays the bills. NASCAR does it too. It gives each team some guaranteed TV time. It was one of my questions at Joe in MTL 2010.

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:50

Do we really need to see everyone in the race and ignore what is happening in the race?

The way I figure it, they've rarely been able to do that "Through the Grid" feature because usually it's chaos on track.

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 20:51

He is half a second behind TK. I think he has his tinfoil helmet on to block your signals

harumph. I'll have to have a word with him about that.

I am stunned he still has it.

Just thinking back to the race that ended up in an enquiry. Am I right in thinking that the people involved in the crashes that ended the race were given back the positions they had before they crashed? If so that is the opposite of what happened today.

  • Kai04/09/2011 at 21:11

Mine just died after Rahal had a go at Barnard

They interviewed TK. He said the usual stuff and said his career has been full of drama followed by happy endings, so he was glad he had a good result today after the crash this morning.
