Welcome to your (late) Saturday Heikki News update.

Due to the summer break there has only been one race since my last update, the lovely Spa. Heikki made it into Q2 for the second year there in a row! I was hoping for some rain on Sunday simply because I got rained on so much last year, and also because rain always gives Heikki an excellent chance for a strong finish. Sadly things stayed dry and he came home in 15th.

In the off season Heikki did all the things you’d expect him to do. Running, golfing with the Finnish number one, making friends with reindeer, watching his karting team and chilling out in Finland. Doesn’t that cottage look lovely!

After some plane related drama trying to get to Spa he also stole a plane from Lewis Hamilton. That’s not something everyone in the world can say.

Taking off again, took an aircraft that was going to @LewisHamilton tomorrow morning, sorry mate you gotta take a train... Or a bus!

This weekend he is in Poland, playing golf again.

Busy week training at home, now off to Poland, attending a golf competition at the Sand Valley golf club! Links course, will be difficult...

By the next edition of Heikki news I will have been to Singapore so if everyone can cross their fingers for a good result there I would be very happy! Have a great weekend everyone, see you in the comments.

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - Juan Manuel Fangio retired from the last race of 1950, held on this day, but what was the problem with his car?

  • Marti03/09/2011 at 09:03

    - Juan Manuel Fangio retired from the last race of 1950, held on this day, but what was the problem with his car?

    Broken gear box.

He was a bit tired because he was up all night playing poker with Ascari.

    Hi again SPWorld.

I've gone to a old church, which is abandoned, and I've found out that someone had broken the door.

Then the police came, etc, etc, etc...

Not too bad, just tired. Sitting in Rockingham at the minute - it's all a bit quiet at the minute.

Decided! I will buy the iPod Touch next Tuesday. I'll go to an Apple Store which is near my house.

I am starting to think about which apps will I download first. I guess F1M will be one of the choosen ones, as well as That Will Be The Day.

Olly Gavin in the GT2 Corvette #ALMS blog post about Baltimore track, "the bumpiest since Houston 2007", "If you go into Turn 1 and you’re braking, I don’t think the car’s ever got all four wheels on the track at the same time; it’s moving around a lot", but he likes it.

I have steak and kidney pie.

IndyCar qualis are on now but there's no coverage to speak of so I'm ignoring it aside from a few Tweeters.

The man in the golf shop was eating a pasty with chips when we paid, that looked like a good idea and but I fancied pie instead. :)

Back at the hotel now. Tired.

Met Roberto Moreno earlier. He's a lovely chap.

Did you ask him if he ever talked to Michael Schumacher after he took his seat almost 20 years ago to the day? ;)

We were actually talking about the CART races at the Rockingham circuit. He wasn't a huge fan as there's only one racing line around.

It also seems as if the GT categories have taken his fancy. He told me he'd like to get racing again if a seat came about.

    :)

What? F1 in Cardiff? Is this something to do with Torchwood?

  • Lukeh03/09/2011 at 19:52

What? F1 in Cardiff? Is this something to do with Torchwood?

Definitely. It was based around cardiff bay and everything torchwood were definitely involved (before they went all CSI and rubbish)

Was a Red Bull Speed Jam event with mostly karting but a bit of f1 and stunt bikes too.

Me too. I think it was Servia who got a flat during quali. I didn't end up hearing the reason, but they suspected it was chicane or track surface impact that caused it.

My mother just transferred her line rental to Talk Talk. That meant BT owed her around £20. So one day they sent her a letter saying they would send a cheque and the next day they sent the cheque. Both had the same advertising leaflet in them.

So much waste and extra cost

The Inner Harbor there is beautiful. Lots of shops and restaurants all around the harbor and a great aquarium. The rest of "Balmer", not so much. Only people not from there say "BalTimore" with 3 syllables.

I heard earlier that throughout the braking zones in turns 1-4 they rarely have all 4 wheels on the ground at any one time due to the bumps. Drivers seem to really like the layout of the course, though.

My mother just transferred her line rental to Talk Talk. That meant BT owed her around £20. So one day they sent her a letter saying they would send a cheque and the next day they sent the cheque. Both had the same advertising leaflet in them.

Wait your mother has left BT? How will you ever flesher technical support calls now?

The answer to Alex's question is that I have access to loads of other phone numbers. For example I could use 0121 28 TRACK or alternatively I could use the direct line for BT's executive level complaints team.

It's the aero that lifts manhole covers. It happened a lot in the past until people realised they needed to weld them. We had cars before where the manhole cover went right through the floor

I notice that I find it slightly annoying when commenters say one car is "stuck" behind another. They aren't stuck, per se. Either the one behind isn't getting it done or the one in front is.

  • Steven Roy03/09/2011 at 22:14

I notice that I find it slightly annoying when commenters say one car is "stuck" behind another. They aren't stuck, per se. Either the one behind isn't getting it done or the one in front is.

It's all about how they tell the story. Joe has spoken about how the F1 story could be told to make it more interesting and last week I was listening to a space podcast where people were saying the same. Talk about the hum story and don't make it sound like a science paper.

Saying it is stuck behind another car is like comparing it to a traffic jam and that just is not interesting. They need to explain why it can't overtake the car in front and what is going on in the car because I am sure the majority of race fans have no clue what a driver does

  • Kai03/09/2011 at 22:22

I agree. It's so interesting to me how someone can defend and modify their line slightly on certain straights or corners and maintain their concentration on their own race, even in a much slower car. "Stuck behind" someone seems to imply the one in front has no skill, they're just in the way and should just yield. Sometimes that's appropriate and possible, but most of the time that's racing, people!
