Welcome to your (late) Saturday Heikki News update.
Due to the summer break there has only been one race since my last update, the lovely Spa. Heikki made it into Q2 for the second year there in a row! I was hoping for some rain on Sunday simply because I got rained on so much last year, and also because rain always gives Heikki an excellent chance for a strong finish. Sadly things stayed dry and he came home in 15th.
In the off season Heikki did all the things you’d expect him to do. Running, golfing with the Finnish number one, making friends with reindeer, watching his karting team and chilling out in Finland. Doesn’t that cottage look lovely!
After some plane related drama trying to get to Spa he also stole a plane from Lewis Hamilton. That’s not something everyone in the world can say.
Taking off again, took an aircraft that was going to @LewisHamilton tomorrow morning, sorry mate you gotta take a train... Or a bus!
This weekend he is in Poland, playing golf again.
Busy week training at home, now off to Poland, attending a golf competition at the Sand Valley golf club! Links course, will be difficult...
By the next edition of Heikki news I will have been to Singapore so if everyone can cross their fingers for a good result there I would be very happy! Have a great weekend everyone, see you in the comments.
how can it be that soon?! yikes.
I know! But I'm so ready for the holiday :D And going with Pamela will be awesome because after going twice alone it'll be nice to share it :D
Good morning! :)
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
Broken gear box.
Good morning folks
Perfect T-shirt for gamers http://www.bustedtees.com/controlfreak
Awesome!

Two of these in our house :)
He was a bit tired because he was up all night playing poker with Ascari.
Hi again SPWorld.
I've gone to a old church, which is abandoned, and I've found out that someone had broken the door.
Then the police came, etc, etc, etc...
Great!
The other day I saw a guy who was wearing a t-shirt with the following message:
I laugh :D
Afternoon folks,
How are you all?
Hi Leigh.
Fine, and you?
Not too bad, just tired. Sitting in Rockingham at the minute - it's all a bit quiet at the minute.
Me and my brother are queueing for the red bull event. Jake Humphrey walked into us in the Bay and had a brief chat, yay :)
ticket problems solved?
the awfully lovely @tgtweets got some yesterday and offered me hisas he couldn't go.
woohoo!

Morning from a Sunny Tundraland, everyone.....
Yay for Saturday Heikki News! great post, Amy.
Met Roberto Moreno earlier. He's a lovely chap.
woohoo, US Open time :D
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/david-coulthard-versus-mercedes-benz-world
Did you ask him if he ever talked to Michael Schumacher after he took his seat almost 20 years ago to the day? ;)
Decided! I will buy the iPod Touch next Tuesday. I'll go to an Apple Store which is near my house.
I am starting to think about which apps will I download first. I guess F1M will be one of the choosen ones, as well as That Will Be The Day.
gosh, people are retiring from this slam left right and centre
Olly Gavin in the GT2 Corvette #ALMS blog post about Baltimore track, "the bumpiest since Houston 2007", "If you go into Turn 1 and you’re braking, I don’t think the car’s ever got all four wheels on the track at the same time; it’s moving around a lot", but he likes it.

Watching Modern Family... Great! :D
Evening. Golf was okay but quite windy which was a bit distracting.
I have steak and kidney pie.
IndyCar qualis are on now but there's no coverage to speak of so I'm ignoring it aside from a few Tweeters.
*hugs*
The man in the golf shop was eating a pasty with chips when we paid, that looked like a good idea and but I fancied pie instead. :)
Do you want to know anything or shall I avoid commenting on it?
Did you go alone this time?
One day I should play golf...
Great that you got in, hopefully it'll be a decent event
Good show.
Can't say I care either way any more, if they want to make it that difficult.
I hear that.
Yes, I love the grandpa and the gay family.
Although the teeneger's face looks like a dog...
With Dad as usual, I beat him :)
Same, especially the chunky dad. So funny.
A photo taken by a friend of mine just some minutes ago.
Beautiful.

Indy Baltimore grid order after quali:
1. Power
2. Rahal
3. Briscoe
4. Franchitti
5. Bourdais
6. Ryan Hunter-Reay
Back at the hotel now. Tired.
We were actually talking about the CART races at the Rockingham circuit. He wasn't a huge fan as there's only one racing line around.
It also seems as if the GT categories have taken his fancy. He told me he'd like to get racing again if a seat came about.
:)
Evening all, just got home from cardiff. Good day :)
Hi Lukeh
Hope your day was good
Yeha, good times. Very surreal seeing an F1 on the streets of Cardiff
:)
I may drop off early - am truly exhausted - will be back tomorrow
:)
What? F1 in Cardiff? Is this something to do with Torchwood?
Definitely. It was based around cardiff bay and everything torchwood were definitely involved (before they went all CSI and rubbish)
Was a Red Bull Speed Jam event with mostly karting but a bit of f1 and stunt bikes too.
I had no idea there was an event in Cardiff. The more of those things they do the better
Mm it looked difficult. They were fun to attend though, I miss it.
That would be nice to see.
How many people turned out?
We were talking about Gunnar Jeannette yesterday, the guy with the GoPro videos and the freefalling. His car is on the grid now and Michael Phelps just tried it out for size. http://ow.ly/i/gJwN
I would love to see Moreno racing again. He deserved better from racing than he got
He is a bit big to fit in there
If anyone is in for the ALMS it is live here now http://www.americanlemans.com/primary1.php?cat=live
the race starts at about half past.
timing - http://scoring.americanlemans.com/scoring.php
I will tune in, in about 20 minutes
I'm here. ESPN3 is actually working this time, mostly, so that's a nice surprise.
Hey everyone. I've had a super busy day and I'm not feeling too great. I have something important to do first thing tomorrow and well... would it be okay if some one could cover my daily for tomorrow please?
I can do for sure, unless any new folks want it...
I can't wait to see how the road surface / suspension of the cars hold up
Hope you feel better soon
Me too. I think it was Servia who got a flat during quali. I didn't end up hearing the reason, but they suspected it was chicane or track surface impact that caused it.
Is Sebring a test for Baltimore, or vice-versa?
I love one of the quotes from quali.... We are here to test the cars, not test the walls. We know the walls work very well.
Take care, Lou.
:D
:)
Green flag, bit of a traffic jam
I think the 4 Corvette is Olly Gavin. :(
They just rebuilt the engine this afternoon.
Thanks so much RG. My head's killing me, been sorting out new uni house today and it's been a bit of a stressful day tbh. Much appreciated :)
No worries, get yourself some good ol' rest ;)
#sidepodspace
There are 2 iphones on the space station
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/news/SmartPhones_Space.html
When I feel that way sometimes it's dehydration. Maybe water will help?
*sidepodhugs for all* you guys are the best. I shall be back tomorrow feeling alot more human and a lot less dusty! :) xx
Good thinking. Drink some water slowly.
been drinking water all day today cause of the dust and things, it may be lack of sleep i think, but more water can't do any harm :)
I'm glad you thought of it. Sometimes I forget when I get super busy. Take it easy.
having mum with me helped :) hehe speak soon! xx
I have no audio on ESPN3. This is lovely.
I have an advert
4 minutes with no audio. And that's the second time it cut out. I hate this crap.
If the hub is off, it is not a good sign.
What is German for "the hub is kaput"?
We're back now so you should be too
Audio is back. I had just a pic during racing. For now it works.
Watching the race now. Fabulous accidental parking move by Beretta
Don't know if this was reported... Autosport says that Quick Nick and La Régie have each updated their Facebook status to "Single".
How long is this race?
Interesting that the pits are all in the shade so they pit crews can't get track temps, they have to rely on previous data.
In my opinion Pirelli is now ready for F1. Is the comment I see plastered on the side of this site! A NON Profit site!!
Does anyone else think Sidepodcast is giving undue prominence to Pirelli? ;)
Only kidding!
2 hours
2 hours. 1:40 left
The separation was announced yesterday
Maybe I need to upgrade my internets. The tubules must blocked.
Thanks
You don't have British Telecomm, do you?
I think Autosport had the first version of it yesterday. They will probably get 4 near identical posts out of it
grrrrrr
Nope, Bell Canada. Grandfathered in to a true-ish unlimited plan. No cap but throttling on torrents during peak hours.
Dad's router broke. So BT sent him a new welcome pack. The router doesn't arrive until Monday.
down boy...easy.... that's it....
;)
My mother just transferred her line rental to Talk Talk. That meant BT owed her around £20. So one day they sent her a letter saying they would send a cheque and the next day they sent the cheque. Both had the same advertising leaflet in them.
So much waste and extra cost
Cute how Hindy says Mary-Land. hehe
The Inner Harbor there is beautiful. Lots of shops and restaurants all around the harbor and a great aquarium. The rest of "Balmer", not so much. Only people not from there say "BalTimore" with 3 syllables.
Good pass for the GT lead
The area around the racetrack looks nice.
I heard earlier that throughout the braking zones in turns 1-4 they rarely have all 4 wheels on the ground at any one time due to the bumps. Drivers seem to really like the layout of the course, though.
It's those mackems, can't pronounce at all... *throws away any chance of living there next year
hehe
*pretending to know what a 'mackem' is* ;)
Muscle Milk AMR with yet more problems :(
I like that car. More accurately I like that sound.
Its a person from Sunderland.
People from Sunderland who are not proper Gerodies
Thanks for the addition to my vocabulary knowledge. :)
Wait your mother has left BT? How will you ever flesher technical support calls now?
uh oh! Good point!
Are you making up words now?
Flesher? That was supposed to be raise!!!
In which language?
haha
I thought it was yet another colloquialism I didn't know!
flesher/raise, whatever. They're close.
Her headping is working. She just texted me. That never happens at this time
The answer to Alex's question is that I have access to loads of other phone numbers. For example I could use 0121 28 TRACK or alternatively I could use the direct line for BT's executive level complaints team.
Lewis Hamilton on ITV now...
The web feed keeps freezing
I saw a tweet earlier saying he was on. I will watch it after the race
Full course caution
Mine has been perfect
Manhole covers has gone missing!
A manhole cover has been sucked up by one of the cars
oh dear..
It stopped so I'm trying the slow connection feed
http://www.americanlemans.com/primary1.php?cat=live&feed=2
They have to weld it back down again. I guess they have good traction there. :)
No point showing Camden Yards when the Orioles are in Tampa
:D
The rats in the sewer with the missing manhole cover must be like O.O
They were talking about a car that needed a very extra long yellow flag period, to make a 1h22 run... This could be it.
It's the aero that lifts manhole covers. It happened a lot in the past until people realised they needed to weld them. We had cars before where the manhole cover went right through the floor
They were strolling around wondering about the noise then instant daylight
A big bonus for the BMW that had just pitted too
:D
and all their hair is now sticking straight up from the suction under the LMP car.
Shame for Guy Smith, the car not firing. Wonder if he can catch and pass his teammate for the win.
Until they yellow flagged the race every time a car went over the open manhole all the rats would be lifted by the vacuum then drop back to earth. Like a race car powered vomit comet for rats
Eurgh. Are you trying to give me nightmares?
O.K. Enough talking of rats... All true racers, and race fans love GOPHERS!
"Hey Stuart, check THIS out!"
hehe
Back to green
Do you want me to give you nightmares?
YELLOW again
Joe may have a case when he talks about road safety in China :)
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/chinese-girl-four-drives-along-motorway-090410886.html
Green
Crash
Yellow?
No yellow.
The car that was spun out was the #55 BMW that pitted just before the yellow came out and was in a great position to win its class
Shame. And he had to stop for a while too. Not sure what Milner was doing - he gets a penalty now
No thanks :)
I will stop talking about flying rats then
Flipping heck!!?
I though she was quite good. I am still not sure that it is a complete con. To be fair when I was that age a couple of uncles used to let me steer the car but they worked the pedals and kept hold of the wheel just in case.
It was quote safe. There was only once I could have wiped out the family
She was really good. That's the scariest part I think!!
quite safe not quote safe
I have a feeling someone else was driving. Probably something wired to the back of the car
Yeah I mean how could she even see over the dashboard.
Jia Zheng, age 4, not content with video games anymore, takes to the open road...
Wonder how long before she has a Red Bull contract?
Maybe that is part of her development program?
But first she has to change her name to Sebastian
I notice that I find it slightly annoying when commenters say one car is "stuck" behind another. They aren't stuck, per se. Either the one behind isn't getting it done or the one in front is.
It's all about how they tell the story. Joe has spoken about how the F1 story could be told to make it more interesting and last week I was listening to a space podcast where people were saying the same. Talk about the hum story and don't make it sound like a science paper.
Saying it is stuck behind another car is like comparing it to a traffic jam and that just is not interesting. They need to explain why it can't overtake the car in front and what is going on in the car because I am sure the majority of race fans have no clue what a driver does
I agree. It's so interesting to me how someone can defend and modify their line slightly on certain straights or corners and maintain their concentration on their own race, even in a much slower car. "Stuck behind" someone seems to imply the one in front has no skill, they're just in the way and should just yield. Sometimes that's appropriate and possible, but most of the time that's racing, people!
I've been enjoying the different lines being taken by the GT drivers especially.
10 minutes to go in the race
Boat in the harbour is doing a donut
*sprays the stands*
:D
Porsche train.
Reminds me of the start.
Is that Trulli or Villeneuve in front?
hehe
"Trulli Train" was the first term that came to mind. :)
I like Hindy telling me about the brakes and why the Porsche checks them after the bumps.
and when I say 'me' I mean all the tens of thousands of people watching and listening to this race.
I am really enjoying this race. Can they please add more time?
It's only when there is another car so close in front that you can see how bouncy the track is
But I am sure he really is talking to you
He reads the comments and saw that we have higher expectations of commentary.
Sounded like a hyena won the race. :)
Great to hear such exuberance from the cockpit of the winner.
Hopefully IndyCar will be as good tomorrow but I'm not sure they'll be able to pass
I can't see they will be able to overtake
I expect a few car failures because of how rough the surface is
Robin Miller during Qualy on VS said the Baltimore set up and fan enthusiasm are excellent. He's pleased with it. Seems to me if there were things wrong he'd be the one to call it out.
I see lots of driver failures, that could make it really fun
hehe
Cue Benny Hill theme
:)
As of right now though, this is a double-header weekend I want to attend one day. ALMS, IndyCar, Lights, good atmosphere, track full of people.
I just answered your tweet, but yes, it looks like fun and I'd be up for it, definitely.
I'm so happy to see such great feedback after the race. It seemed SO dicey in the last couple of days, wow.
I am watching Danish Rallycross which has shortcut lanes on the track.
And I absolutely hate the idea because you can't see where the cars are on the track - it seems like the cars are never racing each other directly!
Shortcuts are such a bad idea
It's like wacky racers or something...
I think Bob Jenkins, commentator on VS just called Franchitti "Daria".
#fail
So you can never really tell who's leading?
??
Maybe once Dario is properly established in America he will get it right
tell me you've commented that on his site too. mega :)
No, because the second place guy turns off on another lane and then comes out near the other guy later on. It was a waste of time watching really.
Now it's Danish Rally championship which is much better :)
I hadn't but I will now
Bob Jenkins is just very incompetent. This is Daria: http://www.mtv.com/onair/daria/
That was a great TV show!
hehe
I wasn't sure if anyone would know it. :)
After moderation it will be http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/08/31/my-perfect-f1-calendar/#comment-64068
Will Power doesn't even smile when he gets pole?
Maybe it's 'cause that creepy Firebird Firehawk bird-head thing is following him everywhere trying to be in the shot.
nice one.
Never heard of it
Years ago on MTV
It was an animated series in the 90's on MTV.
Know of it but never seen it
part of the beavis and butthead empire.
Definitely a lot of people there
http://ow.ly/i/gJRT
Good to see
Jalopnik had an article that said that Baltimore had some of the worst driver in the US - something like 80% more likely to crash than the national average...
Robin Miller mentioned he saw lots of fans there who used to go to Pocono, Nazareth and other tracks in the Northeast. It drew a lot, which is great.
So Indy fits right in.
That's what I thought too!
If Indy fitted in it would be 8000%
Oh dear - i am watching NASCAR and I am not even drunk!
:) :)
It is an under-served area, I don't think people realised quite how much. Someone on Twitter just queried whether they'll be back next year - I think they will.
Every time I think of Indy all I get in my head is the Benny Hill theme.
:D
Which race is it, any good?
Why is that?
Bristol. Just started. I used to love NASCAR but I went off it after they introduced the COT.
Does anyone know about this?
http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/content/unitedkingdom/mpc/mpc_unitedkingdom_website/en/home_mpc/passengercars/home/passenger_cars_world/gran-turismo-challenge-live-race-competition.html
Are you being sarcastic?
Christine
http://sidepodcast.com/post/david-coulthard-versus-mercedes-benz-world
It's a new day folks... http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-4th-september-2011
heheh.
No. Unless you are referring to the misadventures of Brian Barnhardt?
I missed that post
Ah I think that was last week. I want to watch the series but they keep doing things which annoy me.
Let you off the hook for once
I was just trying to clarify. :)
I hope tomorrow is not like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPDXyTPzHzQ
Yeah. Hence the reason why I only follow it in very small doses.
