Good morning, afternoon and evening wherever you may be in the world, whether it be the UK, Australia, America and of course, Rotherham. It’s the 2nd of September, how did that happen? We’re already approaching the autumn (or spring if you’re in the southern hemisphere) but I do love all the golden and reddy colours of the autumn. Also, today is Olivier Panis’ birthday! Happy birthday him!

Paddock News

A new future for Toro Rosso? - Here’s something out of nowhere for you to have athink about as it seems Toro Rosso may be about to get a new owner through IPIC and the many, many millions it brings for it’s owners. RG pointed out that they may very much become the Man City of F1, with Arabic owners coming in with a boatload of money for a pretty average team really. Will we see New Toro Rosso signing Fernando Alonso for £50million? The magic 8 ball says... yes.

Deja Vuno Senna - I’m getting some major déjà vu, as it seems Rubens’ seat is being threatened again by youngsters such as Bruno Senna for next season. Gosh, I don’t think I would be able to handle a change like that, especially now I actually like Bruno! Rubens must say, and I reckon he will. But my far out logic has come to the conclusion that this means next season Williams will be Brawn-esque and...errr...Pastor will be champion. Maybe not then.

Elsewhere

Take a Walk on the wild Aside - I know a lot of people always look forward to these and quite right too because they're always a fascinating listen, so make sure you spend some time today giving the brand spanking new Aside with Joe a listen. Seeing as F1 is back from it's Summer Break it's only fair that the Aside returns too with plenty of informative goodiness and stories aloof.

Monopolised by the Future - Goodness me, could that possibly be the best Monopoly board ever? I mean, honestly - Futurama, and Monopoly, all mushed together into a combination that may have slightly broken my brain in utter amazement. Yet, it gets even better! If you’re a fan of the Fallout series of games (I quite like them, just a bit..) then you have to see this unofficial Monopoly board someone has made. Absolutely awesome, on both counts. I’ll let the dream team represent my own personal reaction to these Monopoly boards

A Manic Christmas Night - As if the news of the Manics bringing out a greatest singles collection in November wasn’t awesome enough, it seems the band are going to be doing a one off gig at the O2 performing all the singles for one special night just before Christmas. It sounds like they’re making a proper night out of it with special guests, and all kinds of Nicky Wire related paraphernalia. Exciting stuff!

Pandamonium with Paper and Pencils - For her weekly instalment of Panda Thursday, Christine this week gave it a jolly good go of drawing some Panda’s, and I really really like them! Plus I do love seeing other people draw with how much sketching and whatnot interests me so you can’t fault Mrs C for having a go too. Why got join in and do some drawings of your own if you have a blog and share the sketching?

And Finally...

One or two final little things:

  • My latest edition of F1 Babelfish is up over at Gridwalk Talk for Belgium with plenty of nonsense and bad puns and all sorts. Why not take a read?
  • All of a sudden the Nintendo 3DS suddenly appeals to me. Why? ROLLERCOASTER TYCOON!! Ohh they better not ruin it or I will shake my fist so much.
  • Check out the world’s most honest logos. I’m sure I’ve seen some before but they always make me laugh because they’re so true!
  • And this is what happens when you get two AI chatbots talking to each other... it’s like watching the Terminator films watching each other! Run!!

That’s all for this week me thinks. Last night I was reminiscing on the utter brilliance that was that ‘Carry On’ video that ITVF1 did at the end of their reign with F1 coverage and I still stand by how awesome it is. Imagine the awkwardness getting to film that with all the various people involved! BBCF1 definitely need to do one. Have a wonderful Friday, everyone!

i realise that christine is going to yell at me for not knowing enough about 5by5. she might have been trying to educate me for weeks.

  • Alex Andronov02/09/2011 at 04:20

small world! don't recognise the name though, is she on any shows i can listen to?

She will be on more but she's only been producing since 5by5 moved to Austin about 6 weeks ago and then Dan took 2 weeks off to have a baby. So she's mainly been silent except for a few bits and pieces. She did cohost one episode of the daily edition http://5by5.tv/dailyedition/72 but the mainly place I hear her is on the After Dark show. Because 5by5, like all good podcast networks is family friendly they don't let people swear on their shows. So Dan made a special hidden show called after dark which doesn't appear on the home page or the master feed. While they might swear on the after dark it's also where all the behind the scenes, producery, show titles and off topic stuff from all of the different shows shows up.

It was in an After Dark after Build and Analyse (which is Marco Arment of Instapaper fame's show) that she mentioned F1:

    After Dark - http://5by5.tv/afterdark

The specific after dark - http://5by5.tv/afterdark/41

He he :) as well she might. Andy Ianthko has a new show starting there soon.

I listen to Build and Analyse as mentioned which is mainly iPhone development, The talk show which is John Gruber talking Apple stuff, Hypercritical which is John Siracusa talking Apple stuff and is Awesome in my opinion (but not for everybody), Back to Work with Merlin Mann, the Big Web Show with Jeffrey Zeldman and Critical Path with Horice Deidu (which is about the business side of tech).

It's the perfect network for me.

I think the most interesting part from his point of view of your story is that you are lucid, making a great point about their terrible customer service but also how making their customer service better would actually save them money.

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 05:21

Time to grab a couple of hours sleep.

My first sleep as a blog owner. I am going to be worried that something will happen to it when I am not there to protect it. What if it gets a comment or it gets Dugg or Slashdotted? What do you do if a day old blog gets a virus?

I am not ready for this level of responsibility

I was going to go on a massive rant but I thought it was better to be rational and point out the errors. When I got the tow truck idea I was so pleased because it is the perfect analogy.

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

Utterly superb - the rant/explanation without being shouty or abusive for the sake of it. I know all too well how bad BT are because my company owns a few properties for our farm workers and a few tenants. Without wishing to stir up a hornet's nest, it seems excessive to me to have an MP's enquiry into the BBC/Sky deal.

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/94168

  • Leigh O'Gorman02/09/2011 at 11:03

Without wishing to stir up a hornet's nest, it seems excessive to me to have an MP's enquiry into the BBC/Sky deal.

I read that last night. The questions isn't about the F1 deal as such, but rather why BBC apparently blocked Channel 4, thereby potentially breaking anti-trust laws within the television industry.

It could have been any sport, as opposed to F1 and it would have had to happen.

  • Leigh O'Gorman02/09/2011 at 11:06

  • Leigh O'Gorman02/09/2011 at 11:09

Ahh I see. Not that 4 had the money anyway.

I think this is one of those stories that probably needs to be looked at from a media angle as opposed to a motorsport one, as Autosport may not examine the wider picture - it may not be in their frame of reference.

  • Pat W02/09/2011 at 11:09

Everything was a little later coming together because it was supposed to be near the path of Irene; however traffic management is non-existent and the drivers arrived yesterday to discover that jutted tramlines run across the long straight.

In SA it was reported that the Brazilian sponsorship is very substantial! They can also ride on the crest of success of the Senna film. RG does not have that sort of connections. If Robert is able to comeback as I have said earlier I am fairly sure Petrov and his Dad's money will be looking elsewhere for a seat. On RG I think he might end up at Williams next year (he would my first choice).

My source Crashnet and F1SA are reporting it -

"Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf states that the Enstone-based outfit remains in 'big' financial difficulties, and that Richards – at the helm of the team in its Benetton guise for a single season back in 1998 – is interested in a potential takeover, with the support of billionaire Marcel Boekhoorn, whose son-in-law is GP2 Series front-runner and race-winner Giedo van der Garde."

GENII is an investment company buy at a low price and sell at a higher price - that would be my guess.

i think dany will run out of money sooner or later. the malaysians wouldn't want him to run the entire country into the ground. but i agree, i don't think dave is coming back anytime soon - not with him running Mini and WRC seemingly on the edge of a comeback.

even less likely is dave taking over from eric and having to take orders from dany. that's just a recipe for disaster.

why would group lotus give up now? that's the craziest rumour ever. where in the world did that start, gmm or pitpass?

First I have heard of DR to Renault but it makes a good conspiracy theory.

Bahar has to design, build and develop some very road cars and needs a market to sell them to. Prodrive have a far better reputation than Lotus and loads of loyal customers for hot Subarus and the like.

Group Lotus is a Malaysian / British company so have a Frenchman at the pineapple of their F1 team makes no sense. DR knows how to run a team and be a motorsport politician. He has already been team principal of that team in the past.

So why not some kind of Lotus - Prodrive deal that gives Bahar an F1 with Lotus all over it but run by Richards and Prodrive who actually have a clue about how to run a team.

Prodrive get a nice contract to test and develop Lotus road cars and flog some of their technology to Lotus.

So Lotus gets credibility, better cars and a well run team and DR gets the profile he wants and a fat cheque from Malaysia

  • Mr C02/09/2011 at 17:08

    i'm deferring to joe:

Team’s owner Genii Capital has merged its operations with Brazil’s World Wide Investments (WWI). The WWI company was formed in 2010 by the Sabo family, which owns an auto-parts company in Brazil, which announced that it had $1.28 billion to invest. ...In July Gerard Lopez and Bruno Senna travelled to Brazil looking for sponsors

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 17:09

not with him running Mini and WRC seemingly on the edge of a comeback.

Prodrive in the past has run multiple programs for multiple programs at the same time. When DR was doing F1 Dave Lapworth ran the rally team. When they planned their own F1 team Lapworth was put in charge of that project and someone else ran the rally team. Prodrive are not short of good people

I have a lot to do today to clean up now that I have power and water (woo hoo!), but wanted to put these here after you were referring to them, Pat. This is unreal, given that they're supposed to race this weekend. Hurricanes can be annoying, though, and we need to allow for whatever interference that made with preparations.

You should put such skills into a fictional novel based on F1.

Cannot stand what Danny is doing to Lotus as a car manufacturer - his proposed designs are generic junk! If they want brilliant designs they need Matt Humphries.

Another great weekend for IndyCar. Sheesh. This is too much.

ALMS too. You'd think either series would've sent people there a few days ago to check it out, and IndyCar probably shouldn't schedule a new event the week after a race the other side of the country.

The organisers did have the hurricane to prepare for though so I'm sure that's a big reason why a lot of work hadn't been done, so we can't be overly harsh. The other reason could be because the main straight is apparently a very busy road and they didn't close it early enough.

I can understand why maybe they didn't get all the paving done (hurricane and all that).

But then there are the train tracks. They didn't magically appear this past week. They've always been there. I'd honestly like to know what the they were thinking when they laid it out.

Very true on the storm bit. I know Maryland got hit pretty hard, but didn't follow it, as I had my own stuff to worry about, so we can't be too hard on them about that.

The other reason could be because the main straight is apparently a very busy road and they didn't close it early enough.

ok, sorry, but that's just idiotic. That has nothing to do with anything but poor planning.

    via http://www.indycar.com/news/show/55-izod-indycar-series/45979-initial-baltimore-practice-at-4-p-m-et/

Delays were caused because of safety fencing that was taken down in preparation for Hurricane Irene last weekend, which is being re-installed. Safety of the drivers, crews and spectators is paramount. Downtown didn't sustain any damage from the hurricane that roared up the East Coast.

Further revisions might be necessary, according to INDYCAR president of competition and operations Brian Barnhart.

"Obviously, the fans and drivers are disappointed with the delays, but there's always some growing pains with a first event," Service Central Chip Ganassi Racing driver Graham Rahal said as he toured the circuit at 11 a.m. "Without a doubt they'll get it sorted. I think if this event is around for many years it has the potential to be fantastic.

"If they could smooth out the railroad tracks on Pratt Street, which is the front straight, and the rest of the track has the making for a fantastic place to go racing."

The schedule delay was helpful in a sense to Simona de Silvestro, who was able to tour the track multiple times after missing the track walk Sept. 1. De Silvestro, who did not compete in the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma on Aug. 28 because of an issue with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, arrived in town early in the evening.

They said that about films in the past -now the Senna flick - next it will be the Hunt-the_Shunt film coming! What about an e-book!

How do you write F1 fiction that is stranger than reality. One driver rams another and not one single person I have seen is prepared to argue with that yet both drivers get penalised and the one that used his car as a weapon gets a 5 place grid drop/

Charlie Whiting lies and is proved to have lied to the ICA to get Lewis Hamilton penalised after saying during the race that everything had been done properly. He then carries on in his job like nothing happened. No-one in the FIA comments on it. The team he lied against does nothing. Not one single journalist to my knowledge published anything questioning this.

If I had written those I would have been told they were too unbelievable and ruined a good book

Martin Brundle tweeted this a minute or two ago:

No I haven't signed with BBC, they know exactly how I feel about diluting F1 show. Just think BBC is one of best things our small island has

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 17:36

hey, there's your second blog post right there. fix indycar for us.

I think my second blog post may be more about BT. I e-mailed the CEO last night and suggested he read the post. I missed a call from the executive level complaints team so she e-mailed me and said they were prepared to consider another £10 compensation. I don't think they are taking me seriously yet. So I replied to the CEO that I was not impressed so someone else phoned to organise a call with Exec complaints team on Monday where they may be able to offer more compensation but after that there is nothing more they can do.

I fear I may have to escalate.I wonder how much pain I have to inflict before they realise I am not going away.

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 17:37

Not even one lap in and 4 cars missed turn 1 and the 5th car hit it

    Ouch

Joe could not see what Hamilton was penalised for as has everyone else

Remember our brain's pre-existing experiences puts a powerful filter on how we see things. I am not a Hamilton fan so I can see how Hamilton might not be entirely innocent! Our brain is interpreting all the time so each of us creates a unique view on events. FIA should nevertheless provide explanations like they did in Canada I think!

  • Kai02/09/2011 at 17:38

ooh, so they may bump it up to £12?

    ;)

It's typical of race organisers. Put out the people who can't afford to repair the damage because they will get less bad publicity from this than writing off a few Indycars

  • Pat W02/09/2011 at 17:39

Did I mention that (for IndyCar at least), the pitlane is double-sided for two rows? Most of the cars pit on the right hand side of pitlane but it isn't long enough so Patrick and Carpenter have to pit on the left, opposite two other cars. This place sounds crazy.

  • red_dog_racing02/09/2011 at 17:40

No I haven't signed with BBC, they know exactly how I feel about diluting F1 show. Just think BBC is one of best things our small island has

Also the pitlane is halfway around the track, I think between turns 8 and 9

Be fair they already gave me a fiver.

I really don't know what planet these people are on. I am now writing a letter to the chief exec with a business proposition trying to explain how much money they could save if they did things a little differently

Will Brundle's opinion change anything, though? Then again, if anyone can do it, Brundle can!

I'm starting to wonder if the BBC may change their mind, after all. They are still getting a lot of pressure - and it may begin ramping up again with the House of Commons investigation coming.

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 17:41

And charge me £3.99 for postage

  • Kai02/09/2011 at 17:41

Something I've always wondered, and not just here, if the indy car pits are all setup, where are the ALMS pits? Do they share?

  • RG02/09/2011 at 17:43

I didn't think IndyCar could get worse but my God they are impressing me.

  • Pat W02/09/2011 at 17:43

  • Pat W02/09/2011 at 17:46

Something I've always wondered, and not just here, if the indy car pits are all setup, where are the ALMS pits? Do they share?

At Long Beach they share the pitlane and effectively alternate stalls, or as good as. Indy-ALMS-Indy-ALMS. But LB has a really really long pitlane. If they are doing that here it could be why they are tight for space.

The ALMS should ship out Saturday night so there'll be more room on Sunday.

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 17:46

Something I've always wondered, and not just here, if the indy car pits are all setup, where are the ALMS pits? Do they share?

Normally what happens is that if a junior class has pit stops they use the same pits but they have no real facilities. Not sure how that works for ALMS when they obviously need re-fuelling and tyres stops.

In F1 what happens is the teams close their garage doors and the GP2 people haul everything they need from their paddock and park it in front of the garages.

  • Pat W02/09/2011 at 17:47

Did I mention that (for IndyCar at least), the pitlane is double-sided for two rows? Most of the cars pit on the right hand side of pitlane but it isn't long enough so Patrick and Carpenter have to pit on the left, opposite two other cars. This place sounds crazy.

I didn't even think about the pit reporters..

@LindyThackston (Versus) So @DanicaPatrick + @67edcarpenter have pit boxes on opposite side of pit lane of everyone else ... and they are in my section ... hmmm

That's what the Indy Lights and Star Mazda teams do too. ALMS needs pit boxes though.

where's the pressure, the commons investigation isn't going to make any difference.

the bbc don't have the money and are restricted on budget. they want the cap lifted, that's the only thing that can save f1 from sky. if it's even possible to back out of the deal now.

People often ask what is different about F1 now. Watch this on board lap with Ronnie Peterson at Anderstorp. The car is a March 721. I just can't take my eyes off the suspension movement. Imagine a modern car on a track that bumpy.

Also notice how often he slides the car. That is probably a combination of his spectacular style, the fact the car wasn't very good and the camera weighing more than the driver and being a lot higher up

I don't like that chicane at Baltimore. That is going to get jumped left right and centre during the race

    I know, it's a whopper of a post though :-)

And now that you have a blog, any chance of some F1 goodness on it?

Not until BT surrender to my will

I was promised another post. I can't see it!!

  • Pat W02/09/2011 at 19:41

I don't like that chicane at Baltimore. That is going to get jumped left right and centre during the race

Definitely. But I don't mind that as much as I mind how narrow the other chicane is, and that there's a concrete wall to hit.

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 19:41

I was promised another post. I can't see it!!

I haven't written it yet. I am in the middle of writing a letter to the CEO following an exchange of e-mails today

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 19:44

It is. The commentator just said so. And said he wished he had invented it

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 19:44

    First proper crash. Red flag

Blue Porsche 66 in the wall

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 19:47

They had a gopro on a rear wing end plate. It is now out on the track somewhere as the result of some contact with a wall

  • Pat W02/09/2011 at 19:48

Chequered out. Interesting track, now I've seen it I like it a lot more than I thought I would, it has potential if not for this year then for next. I'm not yet sure if there are decent passing places but there aren't at Long Beach either really. More of a driving challenge.

Oddly the feed was actually delayed by 25 minutes.

ALMS qualifying is at 6pm ET / 11pm UK.

Shame they didn't tarmac the whole track. I didn't even notice the train tracks

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 19:51

    Poor showing Roy!

You don't know how good the letter is.

Besides it is unrealistic to expect two posts in two days after years of waiting for the first. At least the first one was not 100 words and instantly forgettable

  • Pat W02/09/2011 at 19:51

Shame they didn't tarmac the whole track. I didn't even notice the train tracks

I don't know if you saw it but mid-session they showed how the asphalted over one set of them and covered them completely, they'll dig them out again on Monday. Why they couldn't do that on the main straight I don't know, those were left open but they are embedded so you can't see them very well.

  • Mr C02/09/2011 at 19:52

I wasn't paying attention. I saw them putting down a mesh and tarmac but I didn't realise that it was where the tracks are.

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 19:53

It's perfect. You just stand there and do nothing. Far better than rock climbing or ice climbing where there is lots of work involved. The other option is bungee. You just have to stand still then fall

I understand. But there are parking places for 2nd/3rd years living there. I think that as an older 1st year, I should be considered for a permit. It's not like I'm an 18 year old who can just leave all their stuff with their parents.

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 21:37

Other peoples' more suckier experiences or introductory rates

I think the problem is that a large percentage of the people who work for them started when they had a monopoly and they have never understood the real world. My first job was in the civil service and I left after nine months bored out of my brain because nothing ever happened and no-one was interested.

I have since dealt with defence companies that were spun off from the civil service and they all have the same mentality. Dealing with Ford os a million times harder than dealing with the top defence contractors in the country

  • Alison02/09/2011 at 21:40

they're a monopoly, where else are we going to go?

They're not a monopoly. You don't need to pay them anything. Someone else can manage your line for you.

  • Bassano02/09/2011 at 21:40

they're a monopoly, where else are we going to go?

Are they still? VM, British Gas, the Post Office, probably Man Utd have a phone service these days

  • Mr C02/09/2011 at 21:40

They're not a monopoly. You don't need to pay them anything. Someone else can manage your line for you.

ahhh, yes manage. and who's going to install a new line when you move house?

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 21:40

they're a monopoly, where else are we going to go?

Noe you can get your line rental from a range of companies. Most broadband suppliers offer line rental

  • Steven Roy02/09/2011 at 21:41

ahhh, yes manage. and who's going to install a new line when you move house?

    Installation etc is a monopoly

open reach are the only people who can touch the cabinets. it's still a monopoly.

  • startledbunny02/09/2011 at 21:42

they're a monopoly, where else are we going to go?

I was lucky (or unlucky depending on your opinion) to have a different supplier (Virgin Media, was Cabletel when I joined, then NTL) when I moved to my house.

They don't have such a great customer experience, but I've never had a problem that hasn't been sorted within a week or so.

  • Bassano02/09/2011 at 21:42

open reach are the only people who can touch the cabinets. it's still a monopoly.

I don't use them but I accept your point, for broadband. The rest is just B2B

  • Mr C02/09/2011 at 21:42

    Installation etc is a monopoly

yup. every twisted copper pair underground is still owned by BT. competitors only rent the line. if it breaks, you go back to BT.

  • Mr C02/09/2011 at 21:43

I was lucky (or unlucky depending on your opinion) to have a different supplier (Virgin Media, was Cabletel when I joined, then NTL) when I moved to my house.

if you're in a cable area, that's true. sadly for rural people, it's BT or nothing.

  • Bassano02/09/2011 at 21:48

if you're in a cable area, that's true. sadly for rural people, it's BT or nothing.

There are many rural areas that still don't have broadband speeds. WiFi is probably a better option now

  • startledbunny02/09/2011 at 21:57

Reading Steven's Blog Post, reminds me how ill-informed BT are.

In my work, I have, and still do, repair equipment that can Fax.

Now I know some of you still can't believe that businesses use Fax technology, but they do.

A number of callouts are for people saying there's something wrong with the Fax machine, and say they've got BT to check the line, and they say it's working properly, when it quite obviously is not.

  • Bassano02/09/2011 at 21:57

But the places they don't want to cable will be the same places that can't even get a mobile signal as well....

  • Pat W02/09/2011 at 22:00

A number of callouts are for people saying there's something wrong with the Fax machine, and say they've got BT to check the line, and they say it's working properly, when it quite obviously is not.

The line tests they run whilst you wait on the phone are utterly useless. I know our company is in the sticks but it happens every time the line (fairly frequently) breaks down, they test it, say it is okay and almost scornfully say so, "well we'll send an engineer anyway but it looks fine", engineer discovers fault which takes a while to fix because it is a big fault.

  • Bassano02/09/2011 at 22:00

excellent, we can blame microsoft when iCloud collapses: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/09/02/icloud_runs_on_microsoft_azure_and_amazon/

Apple has selected Microsoft's Azure and Amazon's AWS to jointly host its iCloud service

worryingly we're running half of sidepodcast on AWS, so it might take us down too.

what's odd, is that apple use akamai for itunes delivery and have done for years. akamai is bigger than both of those two in this area, so maybe apple think they need all of them to get it to work.

They have a data centre in NC as big as Norfolk [nearly]. Is it the bits inbetween they need?

  • Mr C02/09/2011 at 22:10

They have a data centre in NC as big as Norfolk [nearly]. Is it the bits inbetween they need?

it's distribution. is short, NC is quite far away from the UK so they copy the bits and bytes closer, meaning we don't have to drag it under the sea each time we sync.

bits of sidepodcast are synced to 11+ locations on the globe thanks to AWS. with all three on board, apple can get very close to wherever you are on the planet.

the NC thing isn't about distribution, it's just the central hub.

latency to the fastest satellite is approx 40ms. from my house to an AWS location is 18ms.

I should add I have no idea if Sky's deal with the GP package is UK only, or Europe-wide.

Talk about cutting it fine !! GT1 have confirmed their second race in Beijing is to take place -- next week.

Thankfully, they are currently in Ordos, but the teams up until yesterday were unsure if the Beijing race was still going ahead...

love this insight into interviewing madonna: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-14765547

"The pack of calm journalists who had stood outside in the hotel corridor an hour earlier, hot but happy, were now flaming fuming."

  • lou03/09/2011 at 00:06

    one little quick thought before i dash off to get some sleep;

Having watched Sky's coverage of the tennis all evening i honestly don't think i can watch their coverage of F1 without going insane.. of course i will as i'm not sure i can face missing races but oh my goodness the CONSTANT adverts are as annoying as hell! It would be a nightmare for F1 i think, ITV were bad enough.I feel bad for people who's coverage is like this of F1 already. constant short ad breaks are awful!!

anyway, i felt like i needed to tell people this because mum just doesn't seem to understand how annoying there are and i knew you lovely people would understand!

  • RG03/09/2011 at 00:07

just noticed from the wall of awesome organisation that it's amy's daily today. i'm guessing that noticing such a thing maybe 12 hours earlier might've been more use.

if amy's around, does you need a supersub?

  • Steven Roy03/09/2011 at 00:10

if amy's around, does you need a supersub?

Amy the master planner will have a post ready

  • lou03/09/2011 at 00:11

Haven't they said there would be no in-race adverts?

i don't know? I haven't heard that but i may have just forgotten... i forget alot :( All i could think while watching the tennis was just how irratating adverts really are. Specially that Fernando Alonso one.. *shudders* Don;t think i've ever watched that many advert breaks in one tennis match ever! At one point there was one at the end of each game!! If we're not gonna have adverts for f1 at least that's something :)

  • Steven Roy03/09/2011 at 00:12

Haven't they said there would be no in-race adverts?

    I am sure they did

  • Mr C03/09/2011 at 00:13

    cool. i'll leave it then.

  • Mr C03/09/2011 at 00:14

i would be stunned if they don't drop them in for red flags and safety cars.

  • Steven Roy03/09/2011 at 00:14

maybe they are trying to make up for all the lost advert time now with the tennis. I swear i saw more adverts than play! :(

yeah, it's the sky way. you pay for coverage and then suffer through adverts.

the fact it's not even his voice annoys me greatly

5 live commentary will hopefully pull me through (hopes)

  • RG03/09/2011 at 00:17

yeah, it's the sky way. you pay for coverage and then suffer through adverts.

Football is good, because when the ads come along, you tend to find yourself looking elsewhere to miss the analysis that's coming up.

  • lou03/09/2011 at 00:19

yeah, it's the sky way. you pay for coverage and then suffer through adverts.

it's ridiculous. I'd never pay for the coverage they produce. ever. I'm just pleased my Dad does. I've never thought while watching the cricket/tennis oooohh this is great i'd totally pay for this.. the bbc is miles above them imo.

  • lou03/09/2011 at 00:20

5 live commentary will hopefully pull me through (hopes)

5 live can get me through even the worst race. I'm just relying on Sky to provide the picture feed to my tv.. 5 live will still be my comms of choice and bbc my coverage of choice.

  • Mr C03/09/2011 at 00:20

probs too early to call, but next year, are you planning to come home for races?

you might have trouble syncing them up, but not sure how annoying that will be. the extra HD delay is unbearable to me.

  • RG03/09/2011 at 00:21

Are you using SkyGo? Because I find when watching football/indy/speedway it likes to be a good 30-45 seconds behind the action.

  • Mr C03/09/2011 at 00:22

    ouch!

at the moment, crofty might say "and driver X is in the wall", but you look up and he's still going round. ...and then he crashes.

  • lou03/09/2011 at 00:23

probs too early to call, but next year, are you planning to come home for races?

yep. every race i can't watch at uni i'll have to. I wish i had it in me to just miss a race or catch up later but i just can't. The idea of missing a race unnecessarily is unthinkable.. i know how that must sound! :) I travelled home for one day to watch a race last year so it's not that i'm not familiar with it. Sad thing is i may end up with a TV in my house this year, was hoping that i could save myself the money on the commute home for a race but it seems not.

I do have the ability to watch sky on my mac if i want to, so depends on internet speeds i think.

  • RG03/09/2011 at 00:24

it's okay, i'm happy to be a few seconds behind the action, I'll just try and sync it at the start of the race... i'll put my sky on pause and try it that way... Crofty and Ant make the races so much more enjoyable than they already are i'm more than happy to be a second or two behind. anymore than a minute and we may have an issue tho.

  • Mr C03/09/2011 at 00:25

we do, but HD delay is something like 5-10 seconds.

  • lou03/09/2011 at 00:30

did 5 live say they were working on the delay at all? although i suppose it's out of their hands. :(
