The other half of Sidepodcast has now been taken out by whatever made me unwell last weekend, so the daily post once again falls on my watch. Luckily I am useful enough to be able to type, unfortunately covering the day's F1 news with brevity and panache isn't my thing, so the F1 Minute podcast is having a bit of a rest right now.
To keep everyone ticking over, here's a couple of thoughts to start the day:
- FOTA are meeting in London this morning to chat about the recent descisions Max threw up (almost literally) last week. Budget caps will no doubt be top of the agenda. The question is, will one day be enough time to figure out the best course of action?
- Most of the KERS enabled teams all appear to be pulling the device from their chassis prior to the Spanish GP. Circuit de Catalunya contains many sweeping curves and finding the correct balance is essential, but people must be questioning the validity of such R&D expenditure when the things aren't even doing a full season.
- The sidebar on the Sidepodcast homepage had a little refresh yesterday, it's now possible to listen to shows and adjust the volume at the same time. Revolutionary, I know. It is a stop-gap solution though, and hopefully a more feature rich and elegant alternative will be available soon.
The comments on the daily thread were excellent yesterday, do keep your thoughts coming and do yell if anything interesting is happening in your world during the next 24 (ish) hours.
I posted this on yesterday's thread just before the new daily thread was posted so I am re-posting it here.
For anyone who has not seen them yet Alianora has a couple of superb articles on the 2010 technical and sporting regulations. You really need to read these.

aitch, did i miss you uploading this picture?
http://drop.io/meandpage22/asset/aitch-and-page-22-jpg
apologies if i did, but thank you for posting and yay for page 22!
Just uploaded it about an hour or so ago, only took a month for that issue to arrive here. I'm planning a road trip for the summer and i'll bring page 22 with me to show it the sights and there should be more pics. Go page 22:D
that's simply brilliant! am just about to write a post on the subject, i keep meaning to, and your pic has inspired me :)
Woo hoo something I've done has inspired someone, usually I get 'your actions are a bad influence on your nieces or nephews'
well, i am staying up late to write it. howzat?
Don't overwork yourself now, remember you're just getting over man-flu.
that's very true. tonight is the first time i actually feel normal. must've been even worse than i made it out to be :)
I had it quite bad two years ago for about three weeks and it took just about as long to get back to normal.
i think i wasn't prepaired for that bit. assumed once i could breathe again, all was well.
have finished the p.22 piece:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/05/06/me-and-page-22/
although my proof reader is MIA, so i've no idea if it makes any sense.
I'm sure she'll let you know:D
So when is Page 22 *not* page 22? In Australia of course! Who says we are backward? I'll try to post *our* page 22 when I get home and have access to a camera.
Kemblewatch - 6 May
Williams have turned up with a second truck and a lot more people than usual. There appear to be what look like cameras dotted up and down the runway. The team are close to the fence by Rapid Racking though the burger van blocks the view into the garage. Warm and sunny here today.
Over and out...
Rob Sinfield
It's either some serious straightline testing, or more probably, a video shoot - for a TVC, maybe?
Cheers Rob :)
Reading this I've just realized something. Can't a team enter under the budget cap, and then spend all their extra money next year on making a super engine since that's NOT part of the budget cap? Then when engines ARE under the budget cap, every team that didn't work on engines to the level you did is going to be completely screwed because the 2011 rules will make it impossible for them to catch you.
The rules state that they only spend up to a certain percentage of their 2009 budget on 2010 work.
At no point do the rules change about Homogation. The budget cap relates to the cost of building the actual engines.
So they have to keep the same kind of engine. The reason engines have been excluded right now is that several teams have expensive contracts which run into next year in place and would have to break them to be able to compete.
For an average F1 team the cost of the engines is about 50% of running the team according to F1 Racing in 2006 (obviously things may have changed post Homologation)...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:F1_team_budget_split.svg
Ohhh... Okay. This makes more sense now. I still feel like there's something to be done in engines... but I see that it's less than I thought.
There absolutely are things to be done in engines I think Vinnie! Not quite sure what yet. But it will be interesting to see.
Engines will become crucial again because the budget capped teams will have unlimited revs and an unlimited number of engines. That's quite an incentive to run them at full bore. Especially when they can flatten the rear wing on the straights. That will be more pronounced than KERS I'd guess.
I'm guessing that in 2010, the budget-capped teams will be faster but less reliable than teams outside the cap.
Then again, Formula 1 teams tend to exceed expectations in such things.
Yes but also remember that with the unrestricted testing (excepting that running in testing does count for your buget) those teams should be able to become more reliable.
Unlimited testing with a budget cap isn't really unlimited - tests do bring significant cost. I don't expect teams with unlimited testing to be able to test that much more than teams outside the cap but with restricted testing.

Morning people. Yawwwwwwwwwwwwn. :(
Last time, I went on holiday and asked Mr C to keep up the daily posts. He couldn't manage it.
This time, I didn't ask him to do nothing, and he manages two blog posts and endless sidebar tweaks.
What is that about?
He got inspired? :)
So it seems.
He's fickle!
Maybe he got inspired by you? :D That's definitely a good thing. :)
Anyone else seen the reports that Aguri Suzuki is keen to return to F1 as a team owner?
If he couldn't do it with Honda backing....
Honda couldn't do it with Honda backing either though.
But if Honda funding was the best Aguri-san could come up with, what's the chances he'll get any sort of funding now?
I kinda thought that Honda were instrumental in the creation of the team because of Sato, rather than Aguri Suzuki floundering around looking for funding and settling on them.
That's true, but then, when Aguri-san really had to go look for money in 2008, he couldn't find any...
That's true. I guess it depends on whether Mosley's plans really do make F1 more accessible to new teams.
I think you're right there. Super Aguri was created to find Sato a drive and then Honda cut off the funds when they beat them... At least that's how it looks...
Good news on F2...
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75070
Yes. :D
Yup, that will be a true test. But even then, he'd have to compete with other potential new teams to get that funding.
Hmmm... Looks interesting... But how easy or difficult is it to drive the car? It has to have a certain level of difficulty to it... How much power does it have as well, relative to an F1 car?
I imagine he has access to different markets than a lot of the potential teams though, especially if he's still friends with Sato.
But he also needs to get more money than those other teams. In particular, I'm referring to teams that already have infrastructure in place (esp. the GP2 teams).
Has Kimi been in Montoya's fridge, stealing his Magnums?
I guess it works in his favour that he already has F1 experience on both sides, but it's just a matter of finding the right backer.
:D
cheers rob, has the weather cleared up at all?
i got better :)
I get mega deja vu on wednesdays; sitting in a Uni suite getting worryingly frustrated at C++ with an annoying lecture more concentrated with sarcy remarks than actually helping :(
Maybe it's a looped function? ;)
Cheesy pun, I know, but hey, it might cheer you up. :)
works for me :D
Oh you should be ashamed. Tut tut :D
See? It cheered you up! :P Made Mr C smile too. :D
Hahaha :D I'm not feeling too bad, just got 2 weeks to finish a portfolio of programs (although made huge progress today) and a timed assesment a week today that is a bit worrying, as well as a few little things on the mind, but congrats on making a horribly boring subject for myself midly amusing :P
Glad to be of help. ;) What's this week's lesson, anyhow?
cheers rob, has the weather cleared up at all?
Wandering out for a look now....
Preparing the portfolio mostly, doing a load of linked lists and dequeuing/enqueing data that I'm not even going to start worrying my little mind about yet. Although I went from 2/6 tasks to 5/6 today so I'm definitely getting there :)
Good job! You're well on your way. :)
he he
Ferr, Ferr, FERRRRRR... :D
That’s true, but then, when Aguri-san really had to go look for money in 2008, he couldn’t find any… {Comment #36}
He did (most notably the Wiegl Group), but Honda kept vetoing it because they didn't like the colour of the money or something like that.
Of course, had SS United been honest with Super Aguri from the start, Super Aguri might not have got itself into that predicament in the first place.
Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to law I go. Will see you guys later tonight :)
also, will be entering myself back into the GRID laptime comp later this week, Xbox should be home todad :D (although I'm over my sisters till Friday)
mediatemple are having such an awful week!
although according to steveintheuk, ollie and f1wolf should both be in line for a year's free hosting, yay!
Let's hope it doesn't keep going down then during that free year, eh? :)
Hey - The Rembrandts are on TV!
oh, it will.
old, or new?
that's what i thought.
old. that said, watching their MTV with Friends was fun. :)
Afternoon all. Watching Simon Gillett being interviewed by Mr Legard. Simon's seems very confident that Donington will be ready. Jonathan isn't!
i do find the bbc's f1 mole blog very, very odd!
just reading this post, and apart from not digging out any "inside info", as you would expect a mole to do. when a commenter asks a question, andrew benson replies on behalf of the mole.
that's like the stig taking off his helmet to discuss morse code.
why not just call it andrew's blog and end the farce?
old top gear with vicki!... plus some bloke who was clearly never going to cut it.
He's still in karting, and Vicki keeps compairing him to Button. That's gonna make Button feel old!
Which would be even more weird because Andrew also has a blog on there.
why does he need two then? i haven't read his main blog, but the mole column is a waste of space.
Well, you know, the mole one is:
"...edited by Andrew Benson, and put together with contributions from the BBC F1 team."
Whereas Andrew is just Andrew, I guess.
Why can't Ted have his own blog? I bet he's a major contributor to that blog.
Did they ever actually exist? Would love to have the resources to chase that one up. Highly suspicious that they only seemed to pop into existence when the F1 sponsorship was announced – and then disappeared equally quickly when SA couldn't find money anywhere else.
agreed. less andrew more ted :)
It was he who broke the story that Damon Hill was getting "the Spanish archer" from Williams, back in the day.
Gosh. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75074
Of course, the Sun says overdose.
Condolences to the Mosley family. Max's problems never end, do they?
quick question. here's a picture of kimi opening the ferrari store in london. however, can someone explain to me the reason for the line that reads:
EMBARGOED FOR PUBLICATION IN UK TABLOID NEWSPAPERS UNTIL 48 HOURS AFTER CREATE DATE AND TIME
never seen it before, don't fully understand what it means, or what the purpose of it is?
Kemblewatch....
Williams really busy today - French camera crew seem to be eating them out of house and home.
Who is the Sidepodcaster with the blue Nissan Almera?
Come on - own up :-)
Notmally it's so they can get the maximum exposure through their page before someone else uses it... But in this case... ????
Although - I did see they were advertising for people to work there a couple of months ago. Was tempted to ask if they wanted someone to come in from time to time to point and laugh... I wouldn't even want paying. :D
ahh, the guys making the factory?
not me!
And you can only use it three times in 24 hours, and for a period of ten minutes at a time, etc, etc...
so are they saying only the british tabloids can print it, or are they saying anybody except the british tabloids can print it?
hehe. not sure this is to do with bernie, seems more like ferrari picking on the british media?
They can't use it until 2 days have passed - in other words when it's old news.
isn't that odd? an what exactly constitutes a tabloid?
Something you can't use as toilet paper? Adds rather than removes? 8O
am thinking this picture looks a lot like gavin's picture.
he should sell it to the daily mirror!
Fourstar and I moseyed on over to the Ferrari store...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-74
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-75
We were hoping for some Kimi and Page 22 action. But sadly he had already gone... Stupid meetings!
Hola amigos! How are we all?
wow, unlike kimi not wanting to hang around?
did you go in the store?
i have a headache :(
yourself?
Alas! :(
No sadly not... they had hob nobs in there who were hob nobbing :(
Hola, gringo! :D I'm sleepy, will probably troop off to bed soon. Up so late?
I hate matlab and excel and latex!!!! And especially if I have to use all 3 at once.
I don't like headaches.
It's not that late, it's only 1am atm.
I'm not quite sure what happened with that quote, perhaps I am more tired than I thought...
Hahaha! It's early... for tomorrow! :P
your wallet thanks them :)
Time to call it a day.
I thank you. :D
Good night!
Night Journeyer.
Hello you lovely lot. Anything big happening today (normally when I say this something has)
I take it you have seen the news about Max' son Alexander
If there's been anything big, I've missed it. That said, I've been out most the day.
It is bit shattering the death of Max's eldest son Alexander. I feel sorry for the entire family.
http://uk.reuters.com/article/motoringMotorSportsNews/idUKL642694620090506
No?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8036232.stm
I would assume the FOTA meeting was cancelled out of respect
really?
Blimey, thats not good at all :( Sad to hear
I hadn't heard that either. Say what you like about Max, but you wouldn't wish that on anyone.
I've no idea, but he died yesterday and apparently there is a statement on the FIA site. I was just speculating that to go ahead with it would be in bad taste
I'm off as well, have to get up early tomorrow (well, today). I'll catch you lot later.
See ya Sean
it might be that they'd withhold any immediate press releases or announcements, but i reality this doesn't effect fota in the slightest does it?
ferrari still opened their store today.
http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/news/2009/05/06/super-aguri-to-return-to-f1/
:D
I thought FOTA were meeting with Max to discuss the 2010 plans, but maybe I'm wrong in that assumption
ahh, i assumed it was just the teams meeting.
i've changed my mind, we're not going to live with kathi, we're off to stay in kent instead :)
It seems that BMW Sauber may join Ferrari with a threat to leave if the two-tier racing comes about.
http://www.formula1blog.com/2009/05/05/bmw-join-ferrari-in-threat-to-leave-f1/
Other news is that BMW Sauber will not be running with a double diffuser (together with not running a KERS) - I reckon they will be nowhere this weekend.
But you then have to use Virgin Internet...
Is it worth that mush hassle?
That is a little bit more convenient. No Kathi though :(
Room for me in Finland then
As long as they don't cap - srry, traffic manage - your downloads to 1GB during the day like they do with my service
Without KERS I reckon Kubica will be flying.
Like he did in the other 3 races without it?
Is that not close to where Lou lives - my knowledge of Britain's geography is a bit shaky?
What about space for an African Refugee?
that is indeeed
He did in Australia, and you can't really determine Malaysia or China.
He was ok in Aus, but flying?
Still, I'd like to see him do well
well, flying might have been exagerated ;)
scarbs says:
"The updated car for Barcelona will aim to redress the diffuser, sidepods and bargeboards with a lighter or lengthened rear end and a new aero kit."
my bet is that'll make much more difference than removing kers. mind you alex did say on sunday kubica has a big rear-end. looks like he was correct :)
Um what about practise - my impression is that Bobby K on track is attemting to impersonate DC!
*waves*
Hullo again.
http://jonwaldock.wordpress.com/2009/05/06/a-blog-is-a-tool-that-lets-you-do-anything-from-change-the-world-to-share-your-shopping-list/
One of my new favourite quotes, really random, but i like...
over to steven... :D
:D
from james allen:
"No word from FOTA yet on what happened at their meeting today. A press statement is due soon."
Am just reading a games magazine and it has a 2 page spread with lots of new screenshots about the F1 game. I'm over my sisters so I can't scan it, will be able to Friday night though
Which one?
Gamesmaster.
Ah, not one of my normal ones then. Might be something in this months PSP one, will look for it when I get it.
Ahh, to be fair I wouldn't be surprised if Edge, GamesTM, and the official PSP/Wii magazines have a feature on them too
That brings back happy memories of Patrick Moore and Dominic Diamond and the cheapest trophy of all time. :D
Who thought staring at a giant holograph of Patrick Moore's head could provide such good television times? :P
Was a great show though.
Evening all. Just on the train home from a chalk quarry visit. It was awesome and very Star Wars-like but my boots are covered in wet sticky chalky mud. Also I've caused controversy at work for sticking F1 pics on my glass wall into the corridor for privacy. No word on whether they can stay yet, but everyone knows about them and no one has asked me to yet (probably because everyone likes them - they're Mantovani toons ;) )
How's Sidepodcastland?
I like this rumour. :D
Dave Richards gets either Prodrive or Aston Martin entry in F1 and the cars are in the classic Gulf colourscheme. :D
Agreed. And it was on a fake Oil Rig too!
Quarry? Sounds more like Dr Who than Star Wars :D
Heheh, good stuff with the Mantovani pics :P Things are alright eprsonally, had a bit of a tedious day at uni, silly argument with someone on my lunch and another frustrating bus ride home but apart from that, things are a-ok :)
Well it was very quiet except for machinery noises and the wind. Very spoooky!
Speaking of quiet, where is everyone tonight?
hi. just lurking.
Same,
Oooh I've just seen the new sidebar widgetymajig on the homepage. very funky :D
Just on my way home to begin my weeks WEEKS of being here less. Although I shall be around for the parade lap.
Evening all. Terrible news about Alex Mosley...
WEEKS? (sorry, had to do that). Yay for Parade lap though!
do you fancy hosting it? i just don't have the energy :(
whats up mr c?
glad you likes.
have also had to turn aggressive caching on, on the site, which makes a bit of a mockery of "recent comments" because they're not very recent.
for some reason a bunch of foreign proxy servers are feeling the need to view the live commenting from singapore thread 400+ times a day, along with other threads that contain more than 1,000 comments. the server's taking a bit of a hit, but caching will solve the issue in the short term.
apologies if it causes confusion for anyone using ye olde comments.
am totally devoid of inspiration or energy atm.
Is it a Wednesday thing?
Things will improve tomorrow, the F1 roadshow kicks off again :D
nah. it's a post man-flu thing.
I'd be happy to host it but... I wouldn't like you to feel I was holding you to doing something you didn't want to do.
Aww :( give yourself a break and watch some awesome F1 spanish grand prix highlights on the BBC F1 site!
did that. i've watched a lot of tv this week.
i think partly i was expecting the panelshow to be done and dusted, but the one week break moved it into this weekend too. we've basically got 4+ hours of live show to do on sunday. gonna need a lorry load of red bull methinks.
Interestingly, the highlights of Spain 97 has Brundle and Murray commentating. Do the BBC have stuff from ITV to broadcast now I wonder?
Then defer the panel show to a non-race weekend
Don't over do it, you've both been unwell. You could probably both do with easing off a bit
murray and brundle commentated together on the bbc.
it'll be fine, i'll live ;)
yay kent! OMG! wow! how come i haven't heard of this sooner... how come i'm not on with Virgin Media... the one time something good happens with technology in my town...
They did? Oh... never mind then. Slow moment :(
for half a year or something, before itv took over. that would've been '97, right?
I think they did the same for 1999/2000 races too...
Did the BBC not have radio coverage of F1 then?
i think virgin employees got first dibs. probably friends of friends next :(
so how is everyone? am having a bit of a break from revision to catch up with news and happenings in the spc world. i hope christine feels better soon.
what about dedicated/ overly obsessed fans of their f1 team?
Radio 5 have done it for as long as I can remember
Good point, are you in their fan club?
Do they even have one yet?
well, you did make 'em a logo...
a brawn gp fan club? or a virgin media fan club? lol
As immense as 200mb would be, I dunno whether it's worth it for Virgin media. Had sooooooo many problems with them tv, phone and internet wise, just too much hassle changing over to Sky according to parents.
exactly. the least they could do :P
Time to roll our sleeves up!
About that. I have an exam and a deadline on Monday. I could set-up the call but I don't have time to babysit it. :(
Evening everyone, what's the good work? :)
word* LOL :P
Glaringly obvious statement of the day:
Japanese driver Kazuki Nakajima has confirmed that Toyota helped him to secure a race drive with Williams at the end of the 2007 season.
Link: Setanta
Well YES!?! We all know that one of the main reasons that Kaz is there is to keep the engine deal with Toyota sweet.
That's good :)
I mean if it would help you to sit back and have me host I would be honoured and excited to step into the breech.
But obviously if you need to cancel then that's cool too :)
AWWWW doohickey was sleeping, i've never seen that before :D blesssssssssssssssssss
no worries, appreciate the headsup.
will let ya know ;)
GP2 begins again this weekend
From 08:00 on Sun, Setanta 1 for the UK
I have an image of Kathi babysitting the panellers now :D
It's quite accurate... She normally only comes in when there's trouble :)
Apologies if it's already been discussed/ posted, but have you guys seen this at all?
http://www.f1wolf.com/2009/05/the-aguri-suzuki-rumours.html
Was earlier, quite laughable really
All Aguri is saying is 'he'd like to come back'
If I release a story that I'd like to enter F1, would it go net-wide?
Look who's the latest driver to take part in Ask The Expert :D
http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2009/4/9286.html
I guess it depends if you're an ex-F1 driver/team boss. Either way, I think I know of just the news agency.
If I said yes, but then later admitted to lying and that Giggles told me to say it, would that count? ;)
You would probably be a hero, because that sounds like at least fifty headlines, right there.
Right then, where's my 'blagger's guide to press releases' hiding?
I was reading the article on Mike Gascoygne in F1 Racing on the bus to work this morning. Made me think - maybe he'd be a worthwhile choice for one of the 3 new teams for next season.
Nothing to see here. Carry on
hmm
did the dogs not put you off?
♥ Christine
Hehehe, not at all. Reading it gave me a newfound respect for the guy and his talents. The amount of times he was screwed out of a good position in a team is unbelieveable. Plus, I learnt a few new things about him like he designed the wings on Senna's 1990 championship winning car at McLaren and that when he left Tyrrell to join Jordan, the first thing Craig Pollock did was get rid of all the existing and experienced staff, which he puts down as the main reason why the team didn't do so well after he left.
Pitlane Fanatic Quiz tonight in 10 minutes
http://www.pitlanefanatic.com/chat.php
You know the drill
Plus, he's a no-nonsense guy. His way of working is "Do it my way and do it right. If you don't get it right once, go do it again. You fail that time, you're out".
One wonders if he was still at Renault that he'd have helped push Piquet out of that team by now.
Great post from Joe today
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/05/06/natural-selection-in-f1/
Excitement in nerd-dom here in the similtaneously backwards and forwards Westcountry. Most of the region has had Freeview for ages but not my little corner, stuck with 4 analogue channels. As of today we have 3 analogue channels because old BBC2 was shut off last night. In its place we have BBC channels on Freeview... and nothing else. Us and Border are switching first. Backwards and Forwards at the same time.. A two-tier system?
and with that I'll retreat into my accounts homework again.
Evening all,
What a game!
Aww what a shame for Chelsea, really feeling for them
I'm not. I wanted Barca to win. Also, Chelsea were disgraceful how they ganged up on the ref after the game - properly unsportsmanlike!
Ah is that why it was quiet?
Did you not detect the sarcasm ;)
BTW I would have done the quiz but I can't have too many distractions, just the odd comment or tweet... shouldn't do that either really..
Bit hard in a text comment!
No, they're all doing the quiz!
Yeah it is. But I'm a Spurs fan, when would I feel sorry for Chelsea? ;)
Good point, you've got enough to feel sorry for already ;)
Tough quiz tonight
Anything from FOTA yet?
For anyone who didn't do it try finding 5 differences in these pics
http://i42.tinypic.com/2rc96ox.jpg
Indeed. I've calculated I might get just over 30 but that's being ambitious.
30? I think I'll be lucky to get into double figures
Ooooh. Gimmie a couple of minutes. ;)
Nice pic though. :D
Got all 5.
:O HOW?!
I just focused all my attention on it. I'm still working at the moment so anything to get me away from server building and configuring...
The 5th was a pain. Very small.
Good photo to do it on too. Had though that it was a artifact to start with - but it was the difference.
Do you know which Lotus that is Flibster?
Is that one of the questions? ;)
Hi all - having fun on Twitter with #siteproblems. Take a look, there are some crackers. I've just come up with one which is F1 related:
I went to davidcoulthard.com but it kept crashing.
It is a discussion that is going on after the quiz. The engine doesn't look like a DFV to me so I am assuming it i earlier than a 49
It's a 33
fota news:
"The Formula 1 Teams' Association (Fota) wants urgent talks with the sport's governing body about the proposed £40m budget cap from 2010."
sadly they're also in favour of banning refuelling :(
So is that a Coventry Climax V8
Certainly is. Either a 1.5 or 2litre depending on the year.
64 - 1.5 litre
65 & 66 - 2 litre
You don't know if it'll work or not until it's put into practice. And you can't really compare it to the last time they banned refuelling since it was a different era. My advice? Enjoy this season now and worry about this whole issue when it's actually 2010.
I'm trying to do that but you want to know how hard that is?
What made it more difficult to identify was the fairing around the engine had been removed.
But the rear wheels were too narrow for a 49, the engine certainly isn't a DFV and the suspension is mounted to the tub not the engine and gearbox.
Looking at the engine it's either a 65 or 66 car. ;)
Personally I grew up in the era of refuelling so I haven't experienced racing with it banned. So right now I'm holding out until it gets to 2010 and I've seen the first couple of races. Then and only then will I judge if it works or not.
I don't think we're judging, I think we're speculating. Without speculation, SPC wouldn't exist!!
I can't name another top flight motorsport that race over comparible distances with refuelling...
Indy may be one.. but I did say top flight.. ;)
That's because F1 is different.
One of the questions in the quiz tonight was put in specially for Christine. Can you name the driver in this pic? It is not Franck.
http://i39.tinypic.com/314e4xu.jpg
:D
No idea.
http://i40.tinypic.com/106zr00.jpg
Hmm. I think it is safe to say anyone who got that question right needs to get out more.
I thought it was Kimi. I am sure I can seen ice cream and chocolate on the nose
Yay, me and Steven are joint winners this week :D
That's good. I didn't expect to be that far up this week
I was seriously expecting to come second and for Mr. Roy to win. But that was a pleasent surprise :P

Hahaha :D
To err is human. To arrr is pirate.
Did they ever actually exist? Would love to have the resources to chase that one up. Highly suspicious that they only seemed to pop into existence when the F1 sponsorship was announced – and then disappeared equally quickly when SA couldn’t find money anywhere else. {Comment #75}
It was really strange behaviour on SS United's part. There was probably the paperwork suggesting it was a company somewhere, but little if any substance beyond that.
I've found the Hong Kong equivalent of the Companies House company search function. It's called Companies Registry's Cyber Search Centre address - icris.cr.gov.hk and apart from having the ugliest user interface I've seen for a while and a malfunctioning security certificate, it seems to work fine.
I have discovered the following about SS United Oil and Gas:
CR No.: 1095149
Company Name: SS UNITED OIL & GAS COMPANY LIMITED
Company Type: Local Company
Date of Incorporation: 13-DEC-2006
Company Status: Private
Active Status: Dissolved
Remarks: Dissolved by Deregistration
Winding Up Mode: -
Date of Dissolution: 03-APR-2009
Register of Charges: Unavailable
Important Note: -
Name History
Effective Date Name Used
13-DEC-2006 SS UNITED OIL & GAS COMPANY LIMITED
In other words, it deregistered a month ago, having been in existence since the end of 2006. It's almost as if it was started specifically to offer sponsorship, though if that were true it would surely have wound itself up long before this April - or been shut down by the courts. There's no evidence that SS United was forced to deregister.
It would cost me $22HK to do a search of the company particulars and $11HK to do a director search.
wow. that is impressive alia.
i recall there being a parent company that took over the website once the aguri deal fell to pieces. any idea what they were called and if similar information was available?
It was he who broke the story that Damon Hill was getting “the Spanish archer” from Williams, back in the day. {Comment #77}
I remember that one :) He certainly knows his stuff, does Andrew Benson.

Similar information should be available if the company is also registered in Hong Kong. The trouble is that SS United Oil and Gas Limited was a joint venture between SS United Oil & Gas Company Ltd. (which shows up as being the same as the company we were discussing in the first place) and Saha Regal Best Company Ltd. (which is a Thai company).
Next stop - look for the Thai equivalent of the Companies House search function, if there is such an item of programming on the internet.
that's the one i'm thinking of. fingers crossed.
The search for information on parent company Saha Regal Best company does not look promising. All but two of the results involved Super Aguri in some way...
I did a quick Google, and it seems they've constructed an oil refinery in Sri Lanka and a Marine City Project not far from KL in Malaysia.
Interestingly, no such company as Saha Regal Best Company (or indeed any company starting with Saha Regal) appears in the Thai equivalent of Companies House's company search (which is the Department for Business Development's corporate search), either as a current or defunct organisation. I even tried registering with their more comprehensive search function but to no avail. Luckily the registration was free.
So we have an apparently non-existent Thai company (which must exist, since it's managing to build stuff) entering a partnership with a recently-created Hong Kong company to create a Hong Kong company with such a similar name to the recently-created Hong Kong company that all searches for the child company turn up the parent.
The more I look into this, the stranger the situation appears...
They've also done some work in China:
http://www.cctv.com/program/bizchina/20080107/104966.shtml
and Singapore:
http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/77948/davnet_finds_muscle_singapore_push
How odd that they have no registration. Perhaps it's under a different name?
Annoyingly, I can find neither a site nor an address for Saha Regal Best Company. I have to assume that it's registered with the Thai authorities under its acronym because although nothing with "Saha Regal" shows up, there are the following 20 organisations with SRB in the name (just to complicate matters, the dates they use are from the Thai calender system, not the Gregorian one used in the Western world):

13 of the above companies are active. Of those, 6 use the abbreviated form of "Ltd." rather than the long form of "Limited" (I've not seen the long form used for the Saha Regal yet).
I think this project may benefit from a fresh mind, so I'm going to bed. Goodnight to "me" and everyone else who's reading Sidepodcast at this hour.
Good night, Alia. :)
Good morning, Europe!

Somewhat ironic, since I live in Europe...
