The other half of Sidepodcast has now been taken out by whatever made me unwell last weekend, so the daily post once again falls on my watch. Luckily I am useful enough to be able to type, unfortunately covering the day's F1 news with brevity and panache isn't my thing, so the F1 Minute podcast is having a bit of a rest right now.

To keep everyone ticking over, here's a couple of thoughts to start the day:

  • FOTA are meeting in London this morning to chat about the recent descisions Max threw up (almost literally) last week. Budget caps will no doubt be top of the agenda. The question is, will one day be enough time to figure out the best course of action?
  • Most of the KERS enabled teams all appear to be pulling the device from their chassis prior to the Spanish GP. Circuit de Catalunya contains many sweeping curves and finding the correct balance is essential, but people must be questioning the validity of such R&D expenditure when the things aren't even doing a full season.
  • The sidebar on the Sidepodcast homepage had a little refresh yesterday, it's now possible to listen to shows and adjust the volume at the same time. Revolutionary, I know. It is a stop-gap solution though, and hopefully a more feature rich and elegant alternative will be available soon.

The comments on the daily thread were excellent yesterday, do keep your thoughts coming and do yell if anything interesting is happening in your world during the next 24 (ish) hours.

I posted this on yesterday's thread just before the new daily thread was posted so I am re-posting it here.

For anyone who has not seen them yet Alianora has a couple of superb articles on the 2010 technical and sporting regulations. You really need to read these.

    Kemblewatch - 6 May

Williams have turned up with a second truck and a lot more people than usual. There appear to be what look like cameras dotted up and down the runway. The team are close to the fence by Rapid Racking though the burger van blocks the view into the garage. Warm and sunny here today.

It's either some serious straightline testing, or more probably, a video shoot - for a TVC, maybe?

Reading this I've just realized something. Can't a team enter under the budget cap, and then spend all their extra money next year on making a super engine since that's NOT part of the budget cap? Then when engines ARE under the budget cap, every team that didn't work on engines to the level you did is going to be completely screwed because the 2011 rules will make it impossible for them to catch you.

  • Journeyer06/05/2009 at 08:26

The rules state that they only spend up to a certain percentage of their 2009 budget on 2010 work.

At no point do the rules change about Homogation. The budget cap relates to the cost of building the actual engines.

  • Alex Andronov06/05/2009 at 08:29

At no point do the rules change about Homogation. The budget cap relates to the cost of building the actual engines.

So they have to keep the same kind of engine. The reason engines have been excluded right now is that several teams have expensive contracts which run into next year in place and would have to break them to be able to compete.

For an average F1 team the cost of the engines is about 50% of running the team according to F1 Racing in 2006 (obviously things may have changed post Homologation)...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:F1_team_budget_split.svg

  • Vinnie06/05/2009 at 08:31

Ohhh... Okay. This makes more sense now. I still feel like there's something to be done in engines... but I see that it's less than I thought.

  • Alex Andronov06/05/2009 at 08:38

Ohhh... Okay. This makes more sense now. I still feel like there's something to be done in engines... but I see that it's less than I thought.

There absolutely are things to be done in engines I think Vinnie! Not quite sure what yet. But it will be interesting to see.

Engines will become crucial again because the budget capped teams will have unlimited revs and an unlimited number of engines. That's quite an incentive to run them at full bore. Especially when they can flatten the rear wing on the straights. That will be more pronounced than KERS I'd guess.

  • Journeyer06/05/2009 at 08:41

I'm guessing that in 2010, the budget-capped teams will be faster but less reliable than teams outside the cap.

Then again, Formula 1 teams tend to exceed expectations in such things.

  • Alex Andronov06/05/2009 at 08:43

Yes but also remember that with the unrestricted testing (excepting that running in testing does count for your buget) those teams should be able to become more reliable.

  • Journeyer06/05/2009 at 08:45

Yes but also remember that with the unrestricted testing (excepting that running in testing does count for your buget) those teams should be able to become more reliable.

Unlimited testing with a budget cap isn't really unlimited - tests do bring significant cost. I don't expect teams with unlimited testing to be able to test that much more than teams outside the cap but with restricted testing.

Anyone else seen the reports that Aguri Suzuki is keen to return to F1 as a team owner?

If he couldn't do it with Honda backing....

  • Christine06/05/2009 at 09:31

If he couldn't do it with Honda backing....

Honda couldn't do it with Honda backing either though.

  • Journeyer06/05/2009 at 09:33

Honda couldn't do it with Honda backing either though.

But if Honda funding was the best Aguri-san could come up with, what's the chances he'll get any sort of funding now?

  • Christine06/05/2009 at 09:37

But if Honda funding was the best Aguri-san could come up with, what's the chances he'll get any sort of funding now?

I kinda thought that Honda were instrumental in the creation of the team because of Sato, rather than Aguri Suzuki floundering around looking for funding and settling on them.

  • Journeyer06/05/2009 at 09:38

That's true. I guess it depends on whether Mosley's plans really do make F1 more accessible to new teams.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)06/05/2009 at 09:42

I think you're right there. Super Aguri was created to find Sato a drive and then Honda cut off the funds when they beat them... At least that's how it looks...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)06/05/2009 at 09:44

    Good news on F2...

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75070

"The levels of downforce exceeded my expectations, the grip levels are good and once we have the new Avon tyre tomorrow it should be even more fun to drive. It is easier to follow another car than in F3 and GP2 as you don't lose so much aero. It means that being behind someone really permits you to get close to them, so I'm sure we will see a lot of overtaking this year."

    Yes. :D

  • Journeyer06/05/2009 at 09:44

That's true. I guess it depends on whether Mosley's plans really do make F1 more accessible to new teams.

Yup, that will be a true test. But even then, he'd have to compete with other potential new teams to get that funding.

  • Journeyer06/05/2009 at 09:46

    Good news on F2...

Hmmm... Looks interesting... But how easy or difficult is it to drive the car? It has to have a certain level of difficulty to it... How much power does it have as well, relative to an F1 car?

  • Christine06/05/2009 at 09:46

Yup, that will be a true test. But even then, he'd have to compete with other potential new teams to get that funding.

I imagine he has access to different markets than a lot of the potential teams though, especially if he's still friends with Sato.

  • Journeyer06/05/2009 at 09:49

I imagine he has access to different markets than a lot of the potential teams though, especially if he's still friends with Sato.

But he also needs to get more money than those other teams. In particular, I'm referring to teams that already have infrastructure in place (esp. the GP2 teams).

He did (most notably the Wiegl Group), but Honda kept vetoing it because they didn't like the colour of the money or something like that.

Of course, had SS United been honest with Super Aguri from the start, Super Aguri might not have got itself into that predicament in the first place.

i do find the bbc's f1 mole blog very, very odd!

just reading this post, and apart from not digging out any "inside info", as you would expect a mole to do. when a commenter asks a question, andrew benson replies on behalf of the mole.

that's like the stig taking off his helmet to discuss morse code.

why not just call it andrew's blog and end the farce?

  • me06/05/2009 at 12:20

Well, you know, the mole one is:

Whereas Andrew is just Andrew, I guess.

  • Chris06/05/2009 at 12:42

  • Stuart C06/05/2009 at 12:49

Of course, had SS United been honest with Super Aguri from the start

Did they ever actually exist? Would love to have the resources to chase that one up. Highly suspicious that they only seemed to pop into existence when the F1 sponsorship was announced – and then disappeared equally quickly when SA couldn't find money anywhere else.

  • me06/05/2009 at 12:50

Why can't Ted have his own blog? I bet he's a major contributor to that blog.

Notmally it's so they can get the maximum exposure through their page before someone else uses it... But in this case... ????

Although - I did see they were advertising for people to work there a couple of months ago. Was tempted to ask if they wanted someone to come in from time to time to point and laugh... I wouldn't even want paying. :D

Hello you lovely lot. Anything big happening today (normally when I say this something has)

If there's been anything big, I've missed it. That said, I've been out most the day.

  • Rich06/05/2009 at 15:13

It is bit shattering the death of Max's eldest son Alexander. I feel sorry for the entire family.

  • Jackie06/05/2009 at 15:19

    really?

I've no idea, but he died yesterday and apparently there is a statement on the FIA site. I was just speculating that to go ahead with it would be in bad taste

  • Sean Golding06/05/2009 at 15:19

i've changed my mind, we're not going to live with kathi, we're off to stay in kent instead :)

  • Rich06/05/2009 at 15:32

It seems that BMW Sauber may join Ferrari with a threat to leave if the two-tier racing comes about.

    http://www.formula1blog.com/2009/05/05/bmw-join-ferrari-in-threat-to-leave-f1/

Other news is that BMW Sauber will not be running with a double diffuser (together with not running a KERS) - I reckon they will be nowhere this weekend.

  • Flibster06/05/2009 at 15:32

i've changed my mind, we're not going to live with kathi, we're off to stay in kent instead :)

    scarbs says:

"The updated car for Barcelona will aim to redress the diffuser, sidepods and bargeboards with a lighter or lengthened rear end and a new aero kit."

my bet is that'll make much more difference than removing kers. mind you alex did say on sunday kubica has a big rear-end. looks like he was correct :)

Evening all. Just on the train home from a chalk quarry visit. It was awesome and very Star Wars-like but my boots are covered in wet sticky chalky mud. Also I've caused controversy at work for sticking F1 pics on my glass wall into the corridor for privacy. No word on whether they can stay yet, but everyone knows about them and no one has asked me to yet (probably because everyone likes them - they're Mantovani toons ;) )

    How's Sidepodcastland?

    glad you likes.

have also had to turn aggressive caching on, on the site, which makes a bit of a mockery of "recent comments" because they're not very recent.

for some reason a bunch of foreign proxy servers are feeling the need to view the live commenting from singapore thread 400+ times a day, along with other threads that contain more than 1,000 comments. the server's taking a bit of a hit, but caching will solve the issue in the short term.

apologies if it causes confusion for anyone using ye olde comments.

i think partly i was expecting the panelshow to be done and dusted, but the one week break moved it into this weekend too. we've basically got 4+ hours of live show to do on sunday. gonna need a lorry load of red bull methinks.

  • Lukeh06/05/2009 at 17:32

Interestingly, the highlights of Spain 97 has Brundle and Murray commentating. Do the BBC have stuff from ITV to broadcast now I wonder?

Japanese driver Kazuki Nakajima has confirmed that Toyota helped him to secure a race drive with Williams at the end of the 2007 season.

Well YES!?! We all know that one of the main reasons that Kaz is there is to keep the engine deal with Toyota sweet.

I guess it depends if you're an ex-F1 driver/team boss. Either way, I think I know of just the news agency.

If I said yes, but then later admitted to lying and that Giggles told me to say it, would that count? ;)

You would probably be a hero, because that sounds like at least fifty headlines, right there.

I was reading the article on Mike Gascoygne in F1 Racing on the bus to work this morning. Made me think - maybe he'd be a worthwhile choice for one of the 3 new teams for next season.

did the dogs not put you off?

Hehehe, not at all. Reading it gave me a newfound respect for the guy and his talents. The amount of times he was screwed out of a good position in a team is unbelieveable. Plus, I learnt a few new things about him like he designed the wings on Senna's 1990 championship winning car at McLaren and that when he left Tyrrell to join Jordan, the first thing Craig Pollock did was get rid of all the existing and experienced staff, which he puts down as the main reason why the team didn't do so well after he left.

  • Scott Woodwiss06/05/2009 at 19:20

Plus, he's a no-nonsense guy. His way of working is "Do it my way and do it right. If you don't get it right once, go do it again. You fail that time, you're out".

One wonders if he was still at Renault that he'd have helped push Piquet out of that team by now.

Excitement in nerd-dom here in the similtaneously backwards and forwards Westcountry. Most of the region has had Freeview for ages but not my little corner, stuck with 4 analogue channels. As of today we have 3 analogue channels because old BBC2 was shut off last night. In its place we have BBC channels on Freeview... and nothing else. Us and Border are switching first. Backwards and Forwards at the same time.. A two-tier system?

and with that I'll retreat into my accounts homework again.

I went to davidcoulthard.com but it kept crashing.

  • Steven Roy06/05/2009 at 21:15

Is that one of the questions? ;)

It is a discussion that is going on after the quiz. The engine doesn't look like a DFV to me so I am assuming it i earlier than a 49

    fota news:

"The Formula 1 Teams' Association (Fota) wants urgent talks with the sport's governing body about the proposed £40m budget cap from 2010."

sadly they're also in favour of banning refuelling :(

  • Steven Roy06/05/2009 at 21:17

    It's a 33

So is that a Coventry Climax V8

  • Flibster06/05/2009 at 21:20

So is that a Coventry Climax V8

Certainly is. Either a 1.5 or 2litre depending on the year.

    64 - 1.5 litre

    65 & 66 - 2 litre

  • Scott Woodwiss06/05/2009 at 21:20

sadly they're also in favour of banning refuelling

You don't know if it'll work or not until it's put into practice. And you can't really compare it to the last time they banned refuelling since it was a different era. My advice? Enjoy this season now and worry about this whole issue when it's actually 2010.

  • RG06/05/2009 at 21:21

    64 - 1.5 litre

    65 & 66 - 2 litre

What made it more difficult to identify was the fairing around the engine had been removed.

But the rear wheels were too narrow for a 49, the engine certainly isn't a DFV and the suspension is mounted to the tub not the engine and gearbox.

    Looking at the engine it's either a 65 or 66 car. ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss06/05/2009 at 21:25

I'm trying to do that but you want to know how hard that is?

Personally I grew up in the era of refuelling so I haven't experienced racing with it banned. So right now I'm holding out until it gets to 2010 and I've seen the first couple of races. Then and only then will I judge if it works or not.

  • Christine06/05/2009 at 21:26

Then and only then will I judge if it works or not.

    I don't think we're judging, I think we're speculating. Without speculation, SPC wouldn't exist!!

    Did they ever actually exist? Would love to have the resources to chase that one up. Highly suspicious that they only seemed to pop into existence when the F1 sponsorship was announced – and then disappeared equally quickly when SA couldn’t find money anywhere else. {Comment #75}

It was really strange behaviour on SS United's part. There was probably the paperwork suggesting it was a company somewhere, but little if any substance beyond that.

  • Alianora La Canta07/05/2009 at 00:13

I've found the Hong Kong equivalent of the Companies House company search function. It's called Companies Registry's Cyber Search Centre address - icris.cr.gov.hk and apart from having the ugliest user interface I've seen for a while and a malfunctioning security certificate, it seems to work fine.

I have discovered the following about SS United Oil and Gas:

    CR No.: 1095149

Company Name: SS UNITED OIL & GAS COMPANY LIMITED

    Company Type: Local Company

    Date of Incorporation: 13-DEC-2006

    Company Status: Private

    Active Status: Dissolved

    Remarks: Dissolved by Deregistration

    Winding Up Mode: -

    Date of Dissolution: 03-APR-2009

    Register of Charges: Unavailable

    Important Note: -

    Name History

    Effective Date Name Used

13-DEC-2006 SS UNITED OIL & GAS COMPANY LIMITED

In other words, it deregistered a month ago, having been in existence since the end of 2006. It's almost as if it was started specifically to offer sponsorship, though if that were true it would surely have wound itself up long before this April - or been shut down by the courts. There's no evidence that SS United was forced to deregister.

It would cost me $22HK to do a search of the company particulars and $11HK to do a director search.

  • me07/05/2009 at 00:15

    wow. that is impressive alia.

Similar information should be available if the company is also registered in Hong Kong. The trouble is that SS United Oil and Gas Limited was a joint venture between SS United Oil & Gas Company Ltd. (which shows up as being the same as the company we were discussing in the first place) and Saha Regal Best Company Ltd. (which is a Thai company).

Next stop - look for the Thai equivalent of the Companies House search function, if there is such an item of programming on the internet.

  • Alianora La Canta07/05/2009 at 00:28

  • Journeyer07/05/2009 at 00:33

The search for information on parent company Saha Regal Best company does not look promising. All but two of the results involved Super Aguri in some way...

I did a quick Google, and it seems they've constructed an oil refinery in Sri Lanka and a Marine City Project not far from KL in Malaysia.

  • Alianora La Canta07/05/2009 at 00:48

Interestingly, no such company as Saha Regal Best Company (or indeed any company starting with Saha Regal) appears in the Thai equivalent of Companies House's company search (which is the Department for Business Development's corporate search), either as a current or defunct organisation. I even tried registering with their more comprehensive search function but to no avail. Luckily the registration was free.

So we have an apparently non-existent Thai company (which must exist, since it's managing to build stuff) entering a partnership with a recently-created Hong Kong company to create a Hong Kong company with such a similar name to the recently-created Hong Kong company that all searches for the child company turn up the parent.

The more I look into this, the stranger the situation appears...

  • Journeyer07/05/2009 at 00:53

The more I look into this, the stranger the situation appears...

They've also done some work in China:

    http://www.cctv.com/program/bizchina/20080107/104966.shtml

    and Singapore:

    http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/77948/davnet_finds_muscle_singapore_push

How odd that they have no registration. Perhaps it's under a different name?

  • Alianora La Canta07/05/2009 at 00:57

Annoyingly, I can find neither a site nor an address for Saha Regal Best Company. I have to assume that it's registered with the Thai authorities under its acronym because although nothing with "Saha Regal" shows up, there are the following 20 organisations with SRB in the name (just to complicate matters, the dates they use are from the Thai calender system, not the Gregorian one used in the Western world):
