It is Tuesday, and it is British GP week! I haven't been around here much last week (GERMANY!) but now that another race is coming along, Sidepodcast shall be my homepage. Hopefully the momentum is back with Red Bull now and home advantage won't count for that much... But let's recap what has happened yesterday with the bulletpoints:

  • What better preparation for the actual race than having your burning F1 questions answered? Join Pat W and Lukeh-and-Lou's experience as well as having a look at the pictures here and here and here and here. Phew.
  • Experience the awesomeness that is Red Bull Racing by joining in the competition here. The only down point to it is Bastian won't be involved. I am sure you'll see him hanging around anyway though. ;)
  • Speedhunters have come up with a fabulous showcase for people wanting to go pro with motor sport photos. They are also offering to answer any questions about lenses, cameras and getting that perfect shot.
  • Christine's rankings see three drivers joint top! And we have someone getting negative points for being Mr. Grumpy... Other Christine ping here.
  • Something revolutionary has been happening in Sidepodcast. Are you watching?
  • It is half the season and most agree a certain someone should not have returned to F1. Will he see sense now and return the seat to Nick?
  • Talking about race seats, Webber is given Bastian's 'faulty-but-repaired' chassis. Is he officially the 2nd driver now?
  • LewHams and Fernando are pretending to be friends again. I don't see how anyone would buy it. :P
  • Anyone else is my part of the world, feel free to join this competition. There are some tricky questions, but it shouldn't be all that bad for any Sidpodcast regular/lurker.
  • In other sports news - apparently David Beckham wasn't at Wimbledon to support Andy Murray. He is really there for his fan Rafael Nadal. There has also been write ups on what went wrong forAmy's king.
  • Can't get enough giggles from the radio? You can always try another medium.

Have a lovely Tuesday, and see you around (in the comments!)

Dear euro exchange rate, stop going down, start going up! I should have bought my cash last week. Not pre planning is expensive :(

for me it would be enough if the Euro made up its mind finally and decided which way it is going to go

Dear Amy, queen of being organised. Please tell Nick to ask for some time off work so we can book a holiday!!!

  • F1Wolf06/07/2010 at 07:00

few days ago I watched air crash investigation on NatGeo, the episode with helicopter ditching (landing on floats) in the North Sea. I found it quite amazing that helicopter actually can do that. Then few days later a HK to Macau helicopter did the same in our lovely sea traffic busy Hong Kong harbour...

Both cases are very lucky. Sadly, it doesn't always end like that which is why we are trained to escape from one which goes under. They take you to a swimming pool, put you in your survival suit, make you sit in a helicopter fuselage and then lower you in the pool and tip it upside down. If you can escape unassisted and without the need for oxygen, you can go offshore :)

I think the more I watch this world cup, the less I enjoy it!

I like it but I only have so much time for stuff and I think I invested too much in the earlier games.

Having said that, I liked it when they were playing the earlier rounds because in these matches, as soon as someone scores a goal they get all defensive, whilst the other teams almost bring their goalkeepers up to try and score.

I think it should be more like netball and only certain people are allowed over certain lines.

I always wanted to try the helicopter trip from HK to Macau, it is 15 mins instead of 1 hour by ferry, but it also costs almost 10 times more, so ferry always wins hands down. but to be fair to choppers - there are some mishaps with ferries every year but this was first time something happened to the helicopter

That's probably just because of the number of ferries compared to the occasional chopper though...

As I say I'm just going through photos and editing and I'm sure this will sound very odd no matter how I say it but Tony Jardine is a man who goes very well with the aging process. It'd make more sense with the photos I have but he is very photogenic.

  • Leigh O'Gorman06/07/2010 at 10:14

Looks like Men at Work won't have to pay all the royalties to the people that own the rights to the Kookaburra song then: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment_and_arts/10518787.stm

5% since 2002 probably isn't as much as it sounds... which seems fair to me as (a) Down Under only has a passing resemblance and (b) the woman who wrote the song never claimed for it, it was the company that bought the rights to the song after she died that did.

    Larrikins indeed!

Still potentially an awful lot of money considering much of it will be coming from MCPS as opposed to sales - an awful lot stations everywhere play it on "80's hour"

It's more than a passing resemblance. It's the exact same tune.

I do wonder why the lady who wrote the original song never claimed anything? Surely someone must have told her?

  • Leigh O'Gorman06/07/2010 at 10:58

But is it as much as when the song came out?

No, but it's against the law to claim any further back. They only have to go back to 2002, because the case was filed in 2008.

As for the original, I always assumed it was an old traditional folk song, which often bypasses modern copyright laws

Unless a company buys the rights to the song as is the case here?

I was just thinking about where this fits on the similarity scale and I was wondering what the two ends of the scale would look like?

How about ranging from 'passing resemblance' at one end to 'Vanilla Ice' at the other? :D

  • Christine06/07/2010 at 11:06

I think the song was written in the 30s. I would be surprised if the writer was still around.

Also, Larrikin only claimed infringement after the similarity was noted on a tv show. They had to have it pointed out to them!

  • Christine06/07/2010 at 11:22

It does - copyright lasts for 70 years after the person is dead and recorded copyrights lasts for 50 years.

Remember that this is often one of the only means of earnings for artists

  • RG06/07/2010 at 11:25

So if someone writes something successful when 20, they can't make any more money off it after they're 70?

  • RubberGoat06/07/2010 at 11:26

    I saw that...

  • Leigh O'Gorman06/07/2010 at 11:27

So if someone writes something successful when 20, they can't make any more money off it after they're 70?

Oooh great question. On the one hand, the person who wrote the song should earn off anyone using it, but then after 50 years, shouldn't it have become so well known that it should be free to use?

  • paul06/07/2010 at 11:29

So if someone writes something successful when 20, they can't make any more money off it after they're 70?

Copyright law is a very complex thing. But in a nutshell, no I think it's crazy. Even worse, when some company can buy and then assert these "rights". There is no protection of the creator here.

  • RubberGoat06/07/2010 at 11:29

    She died in '98 apparently.

  • Christine06/07/2010 at 11:29

So if someone writes something successful when 20, they can't make any more money off it after they're 70?

The idea of copyright is to encourage creativity by protecting your rights for a while. Not to provide a means of making a living off one item for the rest of your life.

  • paul06/07/2010 at 11:30

Then the copyright will last until 2068 then

And it's all about protecting Mickey mouse.

That's what it comes down to for me. The lady died, a company bought the rights to the song and then claimed breach of copyright. It's not like her family get the money or anything...

Copyright law is a very complex thing. But in a nutshell, no I think it's crazy. Even worse, when some company can buy and then assert these "rights". There is no protection of the creator here.

The key word here is "buy". If the rights are bought, then the creator benefits, albeit in sum sum.

  • Pat W06/07/2010 at 11:31

When it was drawn up, the idea was the rights would simply revert to the next of kin after death. Meanwhile there is currently a fight to have mechanical rights extended to 70 years

  • Pat W06/07/2010 at 11:33

Oooh great question. On the one hand, the person who wrote the song should earn off anyone using it, but then after 50 years, shouldn't it have become so well known that it should be free to use?

I think someone should be able to lay claim on it until they are dead, then it becomes open.

  • Leigh O'Gorman06/07/2010 at 11:33

Actually it is more often a way for large companies to stop anyone using seeing hearing performing things. They would rather see them hidden and disappear. These rules were sponsored by Disney to keep the image of Mickey Mouse form being used.

The idea of copyright is to encourage creativity by protecting your rights for a while. Not to provide a means of making a living off one item for the rest of your life.

Surely if you write something you own it unless under some sort of contract that says someone else does. And if you own something you have the right to make a living from it.

It may encourage the writer's creativity but it stifles everyone elses, like remixes, samples, covers. I can see pros and cons to that.

  • paul06/07/2010 at 11:38

Mickey Mouse?? In the 18th century??

Sorry, should have said: to prevent the image being copied or used by others. Copyright used to last only 20 years

The copyright is owned by the writers of a works. Mechanical rights are often owned by the producers

And so, after what, 70 years? You can pursue a band thought the courts because of a small riff in a song. Especially if their song is popular right?

damn i missed a whole discussion on copyright :(

my stance is that copyright needn't be extended beyond 50 years from creation. should we be able to sample and remix anything after that period? too right.

if that means people run out of money, they need to be more creative more often.

Poor PJ (or Ant. or Dec. I dunno which is which)

That episode scared me when he got blinded :( although that time Brum broke down was just as traumatic for a 5 year old

Paintball is vicious. I got a bruise like someone hit me with a baseball bat on the back of the head, ring marks from paintballs for ages and my mate got one in the mouthguard - so all the shards cut his lip!

it starts with a doof doof one that has no lyrics, then it's cookie jar by gym class heroes (which is the only one I can name because I could google the horrible repetitive lyrics MY HANDS MY HANDS MY HANDS OH GOD KILL ME), then it's another doof doof one then its a poppy-punkish one. Horrrrrible.

    Ahem...

My only other complaint would be that they didn’t perform anything from Unbreakable because there were some quite upbeat songs on that album that would have got the crowd going.

oh yes, I have lots of albums from after that, some iTunes examples are Backstreet Boys, Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell, Metallica, Foo Fighters, RHCP, all of who were around before then.

The only things I can find in my list that weren't are Electric Six, Kelly Clarkson and Justin Timberlake. And JT doesn't count because nsync were around before then ;)

I have my Wimbledon tour booked, then I think I'm going to hang out with Pamela and do some sight seeing. Now that I know Renee will be there at that time I might see if I can grab a coffee with her too. And I might also try catch up with my old flatmate. The MotoGP riders didn't rate it either, and it had mixed reviews from FIA GT drivers. People are building up the Village corner but that's not where the action will be - it'll be at Brooklands, if it works.

The other thing is the old section has not been resurfaced and is still abrasive and bumpy, and there are big bumps on the transition to the new track

  • Journeyer06/07/2010 at 16:46

They can revert back to the old layout if it really gets horrible in the next 5 years, right?

In any case, if the new layout is more abrasive on tyres, we may get more mistakes leading to overtakes, anyway...

  • me06/07/2010 at 16:47

my issue is how much farther the grandstands need to be from the track, cause of the silly bikes.

    binoculars required.

They can and it wouldn't necessarily be a huge PR disaster because it was always meant for bikes. Bridgestone are taking harder tyres than usual, apparently.

"The Internet's completely over. I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it."

probably best to throw away that modem right now.

Stumbled in here as I saw a referral to my corner of the Internet (cheers Gavin!)... I don't wish to pry about your situation, but have you sought advice about claiming jobseeker's allowance at all? It's certainly better than having to use up any of your savings and serves a purpose.

Thanks. I have looked at it. If I don't get a job by the end of July I'll probably claim it. I chose to stop working and claiming benefits means I have to look for work on their terms, which is completely correct if they are funding me, but means I have to consider anything within an hours travel and I would prefer something I can walk to. Will see what happens.

To be honest, I don't blame you. I was in a similar predicament recently, and was prepared to use my savings. But then I thought about all the tax I've ever paid... so I bit the bullet and stumbled down to the local Job Centre and signed on. I found that it least wasn't quite as gloomy or stinky as I thought it would be, nor was it like the Fully Monty (unfortunately).

So long as you play the game (and fill in your little log book of 'activities'), then they'll let you get on with things. I think the one's in my local office were just happy to see someone sane every fortnight!

Anyway, fortunately I've found employment now. Fair from my ideal job, but it's got to be better than a poke in the eye (well, I hope it is!)

Good luck with the search and keep those self-esteem levels high! If you want any advice or whatever, let me know.

My prediction is they'll all moan about the bump at Abbey (tough!), there won't be much passing into Village and the short chute will trip some people up and that'll lead to some good passing down Wellington into Brooklands.

I can't for the life of me work out why they messed up Club.

Either way it was a very long time ago. You have to wonder what genius decide to have the start on a corner at a track with so many straights on it.

Seems to me the ideal spot would be the new straight.
