Hello you lovely peoples out there. Right now I usually start with some long-winded, witty (sometimes) introduction to the daily post. Today is different, since the 5th July may just be the most uneventful day of all 366 of them. Nothing interesting has happened, nobody interesting was born. In fact, the only birthday of note is that of Dolly the Sheep, the first ever cloned animal. Not even a human, there should be something interesting in the bulletpoints:

  • It was the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend as I'm sure most of you were aware of. The only bits I caught were the two hours on Sky Sports (which I found impressive, including the bloke who did the speedway, Charlie Webster who also does the speedway and used to do GP2, as well as Anthony Davidson and David Croft commentating), but Lou and Lukeh were there and they have written up about some rather special moments and a big thanks to a few people, it is, in my honest view, a brilliant post. Lukeh's new best friend forever Bruno Senna also provided us with a spectacular video of the course when returning back to the paddock. But finally, boo to Renault who decided Hungary was a better place to send drivers Jan Charouz and Ho-Pin Tung. Tut tut.
  • The 4th July may have been important for America, but Leigh was written an insightful post about Roland Ratzenberger, the Austrian who died the day before Ayrton Senna at the same track. He would have been 50 yesterday.
  • Leigh has also shared his July spotify playlist for this month, so while absolutley nothing happens today, stick your feet up and listen to some quality and relevant music as picked by Leigh. Be warned, it may not actually work in all countries, so don't go running to me if it doesn't work for you. Go to Leigh instead.
  • I'm not sure what is going on, it appears the curse of the 5th July strikes in the world of sport. The tennis has finished at Wimbledon, the football is taking a bit of a siesta and if it wasn't for the Tour de France I'm pretty sure I would forget sport exists. But good news people, the British Grand Prix is this weekend! Yes, the pinnacle of the year, packed crowds and fantastic racing. I suppose any excuse to mention Tai Woffinden, but there are three British riders to cheer on. Scotty Nicholls (who had an on track fight with Emil Sayfutdinov at this event last year, Sutil and Trulli have nothing on this) and Chris Harris (who won it in 2007 on the very last corner). Its on Saturday night and on Sky Sports 2 from 4:30 GMT+1.

Let us not forget about Mr. Andronov's latest radio show, which featured as usual, some unusual songs as well as one of my guilty pleasures, I won't reveal which song it is though. Don't get concerned by the lack of things going on today, its the 6th July tomorrow which for starters, and the Dutch are playing. Remember just to relax today and I'm sure it'll be done with and forgotten about quickly enough soon.

Have a nice (if possible) Monday.

Summerton is a good driver - he'll need at least some GP2 first though. I don't think going from IndyLights to F1 is the best way to go

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/07/2010 at 10:57

  • Alex Andronov05/07/2010 at 10:57

Gosh, Joe Friday is creeping up quickly.

I only just realised that it was this Friday... I wonder what I'm doing on Friday?

i'll blog this later, but people need to know, we are not recording this one.

  • Christine05/07/2010 at 10:59

Are you going to try to record this one?

    Nope.

  • me05/07/2010 at 10:59

    I most certainly am not.

We are moving house and it was suggested key collection might be Friday.

  • Alex Andronov05/07/2010 at 11:03

Moving house again? Poor you, hasn't been long enough since the last one!

  • Alex Andronov05/07/2010 at 11:05

    Joe > moving house.

You two move house more often than I have hot dinners. I often eat cold dinners - well okay I don't but I was trying to make a point which didn't really work... okay fine... you two move house more often than I do.

No wonder you are so #MFC :)

  • paul05/07/2010 at 11:05

    Joe > moving house.

I wonder who might turn up. I'm excited and I'm not even going.

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/07/2010 at 11:06

    It's what we do.

  • Pat W05/07/2010 at 11:07

We are moving house and it was suggested key collection might be Friday.

Wow, you move even more often than me

  • Alex Andronov05/07/2010 at 11:07

How far into the move will it be before Mr C suggest buying Christine an iPad so he doesn't have to carry any more boxes of books?

    My guess... Pretty soon...

  • Christine05/07/2010 at 11:07

I wonder who might turn up. I'm excited and I'm not even going.

Probably me, Mr C and a van. Oh, you mean Joe.

  • paul05/07/2010 at 11:08

How far into the move will it be before Mr C suggest buying Christine an iPad so he doesn't have to carry any more boxes of books?

A few weeks ago from memory :-)

We already did! The iPad is MINE now.

    Morning lovely peoples.

    Hi

  • Alex Andronov05/07/2010 at 11:09

We already did! The iPad is MINE now.

    Mwahahahahaha.

Have you started jettisoning books yet? I haven't been brave enough yet.

  • Christine05/07/2010 at 11:09

You mean you don't bug family?

Probably won't need to. We're kind of self sufficient, plus we don't have much stuff.

See: Mr C making me throw out all my books.

  • RubberGoat05/07/2010 at 11:09

Probably me, Mr C and a van. Oh, you mean Joe.

    Hehehehe

You mean you don't bug family?

I had my parents in law, my sis-in-law, bro-in-law and their kids helping. Oh, and they brought loads of beer...

  • me05/07/2010 at 11:10

We already did! The iPad is MINE now.

true story. i noticed it wasn't even in the house this morning.

    still, it beats moving bookshelves.

  • Christine05/07/2010 at 11:10

Have you started jettisoning books yet? I haven't been brave enough yet.

    It's basically my next job.

  • Pat W05/07/2010 at 11:10

I wonder if these guests put him off spilling some beans..

  • paul05/07/2010 at 11:10

Me neither. That's the problem isn't it?

  • Pat W05/07/2010 at 11:10

  • Journeyer05/07/2010 at 11:11

Today is different, since the 5th July may just be the most uneventful day of all 366 of them.

I don't think it's uneventful - Le Tour De France will visit Spa today! :D

  • RG05/07/2010 at 11:12

I don't think it's uneventful - Le Tour De France will visit Spa today! :D

But not -Francorchamps, which is the interesting part of the place, I think.

  • Journeyer05/07/2010 at 11:14

Is Eau Rouge in Spa or Francorchamps?

  • me05/07/2010 at 11:14

i guess now that goodwood has been and gone. it's probably okay to discuss spa now. or should that wait until after the bgp?

  • Amy05/07/2010 at 11:15

Have you started jettisoning books yet? I haven't been brave enough yet.

I found another one I own in paper today on the Kindle store that is not available to customers in Australia :( It makes me sad, getting rid of my books is an exciting high.

  • Amy05/07/2010 at 11:15

i guess now that goodwood has been and gone. it's probably okay to discuss spa now. or should that wait until after the bgp?

    now now now now nowwwww!

Pamela is leaving Australia in T-7 days which means it's SOON.

  • Christine05/07/2010 at 11:15

The first book I read on the Kindle App has a sequel which is not available in the UK.

    That's just... teasing.

    Map here: http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/97th-tour-de-france-gt/stage-2

    They mention Stavelot!

    It's basically my next job.

I have now read 3 books cover to cover on my iPad and I can't imagine going back to print... It's on my list to do... But on the other hand I don't have a time based incentive.

  • Christine05/07/2010 at 11:17

But on the other hand I don't have a time based incentive.

I have an iPad based incentive. It was kinda the deal :)

I guess the best argument for e-books is that paperbacks just waste space on the shelf when they've been read...

I have the problem that I was halfway through a book when I bought my Kindle and now I refuse to finish it because I don't like paper anymore. Boo paper.

  • RubberGoat05/07/2010 at 11:18

People keep giving me leper to read :-(

they are frickin' heavy in bulk.

  • Journeyer05/07/2010 at 11:19

ESPN tracker says the finish is in Spa-Francorchamps. Can't argue with that, I suppose.

Tell me about it. 11 moving boxes, no more than half full for weight limits!

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/07/2010 at 11:19

I don't car what anyone says, I like my books!!

    :)

    schumi's half-term report card: http://www.gpupdate.net/en/f1-news/238243/gpupdate-half-term-report-michael-schumacher/

    could do better.

  • paul05/07/2010 at 11:20

No, just fingers that don't work with the iPad

  • Pat W05/07/2010 at 11:20

Neither, the track is between the places I think

  • RG05/07/2010 at 11:20

    Fair enough.

  • Amy05/07/2010 at 11:23

must be Francorchamps though, the circuit isn't even close to Spa

  • Alex Andronov05/07/2010 at 11:24

they are frickin' heavy in bulk.

    They really are.

Some books I will still keep for the time being... For example Codder's one and books like that. But a paperback? A textbook? Give me a break!

  • Amy05/07/2010 at 11:25

Some books I will still keep for the time being... For example Codder's one and books like that. But a paperback? A textbook? Give me a break!

I will always keep your book, it's the only one I've purchased in digital and not tossed :D

  • Christine05/07/2010 at 11:25

Some books I will still keep for the time being... For example Codder's one and books like that. But a paperback? A textbook? Give me a break!

I have maybe four books I'll have to keep for sentimental and/or "that'll never appear as an ebook" reasons. Even I can manage that box.

  • Journeyer05/07/2010 at 11:25

must be Francorchamps though, the circuit isn't even close to Spa

    Indeed. TDF website says:

Spa is better known for motor-racing than for cycling yet bicycles have often been spotted near the Francorchamps track, on the Tour or in classics. The Tour finished several times on the circuit proper.

    Interesting.

  • RubberGoat05/07/2010 at 11:25

Some books I will still keep for the time being... For example Codder's one and books like that. But a paperback? A textbook? Give me a break!

I kept my textbooks because I sold them after the first year and then took courses 2-3 years later that needed them again...

Also, my calculus book is great for flattening things...

  • Alex Andronov05/07/2010 at 11:25

Yeah but it's a bit weird... It's like the first page wasn't included somehow...

  • Alex Andronov05/07/2010 at 11:27

I kept my textbooks because I sold them after the first year and then took courses 2-3 years later that needed them again...

Kindle and iBooks both have search inside the books and add notes to the book which are automatically search-able as well... And they go out of date. Text books as actual printed books are first against the wall in my opinion.

  • Alex Andronov05/07/2010 at 11:27

really annoyed with my publisher who said, "the fastest way to get on the Kindle and iBook store was to [go via them]"... Still no ebook. *shakes fist*

  • Alex Andronov05/07/2010 at 11:29

Well that's all good I suppose... but who said I was rational? ;)

I know... But I just read an electronic book, made notes with it and then I had to refer to a real one and I was so frustrated with it. That's when I made the decision.

  • paul05/07/2010 at 11:30

My parents have a big box of my textbooks because they make me feel smart, but I have realised I'll never use them again so I told them to toss them :D

I still have some of mine to remind me I used to be able to think

  • Amy05/07/2010 at 11:30

I need comment food choosing help again, we are going to a work function to some sort of vegetarian restaurant, and the inability to order meat of course has me studying the menu before I go. I have narrowed it down to two choices:

    1) Vegie Roast

Oven roasted root vegetables seasoned with garlic and fresh herbs, served with caramelised onions and pumpkin seeds, accompanied by a slice of homemade focaccia, hommus and tsatsiki dip

    or 2) Risotto

Portobello, swiss brown and field mushrooms, simmered in white wine and pesto. Finished with chervil, parmesan and white truffle oil.

I really like roast veges. But I really like mushrooms too. Heeeeelp.

  • Christine05/07/2010 at 11:30

  • Journeyer05/07/2010 at 11:31

1 all the way, roast vegetables rule.

  • Amy05/07/2010 at 11:32

I was leaning towards it just because I know what every word in that means. I have no idea what chervil is.

Chervil is nice... Bit like parsley.

    There are vegetarian restaurants?

theres a few around Melbourne that I know of, we had our work Christmas party at one last year and I kind of fell in love with their mushroom burgers.

My managers email that he sent out about our function included the line "if you're lucky, you might get a lecture from me about why you should be vegetarian too!'

    I can't wait :(

    Oh boy...

I have two veggie friends. One whose partner is an absolute carnivore yet is not allowed ANY meat in the house, while the other is more easy going about it and doesn't even mind if the same grill/tools are used (she just doesn't eat meat)...

  • Amy05/07/2010 at 11:40

I hope so. The other day at work I was eating a cheeseburger and he had to leave the room because "it smelt so good"

Bring in some bacon. Bacon always breaks the wobbly ones :)

  • RubberGoat05/07/2010 at 11:42

That's asking for an argument.. Can't you just have a nice meal sampling something different?

I hope so. The other day at work I was eating a cheeseburger and he had to leave the room because "it smelt so good"

    1) Vegie Roast

Oven roasted root vegetables seasoned with garlic and fresh herbs, served with caramelised onions and pumpkin seeds, accompanied by a slice of homemade focaccia, hommus and tsatsiki dip

    No 1.

    Where r u going?

Perhaps an update to "The corrupted e-book", but that doesnt sound very virtuious, perhaps the "The e-book with a minor download error?"

Had to google "Quorn". Seems tofu-ish? Never was keen on tofu. Not for lack of trying though. I find it very bizarre to be learning to cook meat now. Eating out is more fun though - many more options.

It's not. It's made from mushrooms but they try and texture it like meat. It doesn't really taste like met but the flavour of it is okay in it's own right I'd say.

BIG if though. As it stands, it seems my sis' school doesn't schedule their graduation until January. :( I've asked her to pester the school, though, and see if we can find out earlier. :D

  • Amy05/07/2010 at 12:27

You have to buy ultra-early to get a gold ticket right?

they make the dates later and later every year, which is kind of annoying because it means theres thousands of gold holders. It's not exclusive by any means anymore which makes all the Advantage events way too packed.

  • Pamela05/07/2010 at 12:29

    ha. vettel will love that.

    I love his quote;

Speaking about the change at the time, Vettel said: "I was complaining for the last couple of races that something was not feeling right, and it was good on Sunday night [in Monaco] when we decided to change the chassis anyway just to make a change and find something. I think it explains a lot. On top of that, we also found other things that weren't in proper shape."

blog idea for you, then: based on your theory, how many of those who were leading after Turn 1 (or Lap 1) go on to win? 2010 vs. 2009 comparison.

i'm still guessing it will be less likely that such leaders in 2010 will win vs. such leaders in 2009.

i'd love to know that though. also, taking into account mechanical failures. so assuming all cars were equally reliable, which season saw a more mixed up finishing order.

Right, so basically compare the grid with the finishing position and see how many were the same?

Good for the series in prestige terms because it can continue to claim direct association to F1, and Pirelli say it'll run one of the four F1 compounds all year rather than develop a bespoke one as Bridgestone did.

For the fans and the drivers I can't see how this is at all good. Surely they won't be able to overtake?

  • me05/07/2010 at 15:37

it doesn't have to be fast though. it just has to give drivers a feel for f1.

they may as well get used to a lack of overtaking early :)

  • James05/07/2010 at 15:37

    it would be faster..

and hideous. they can't use the fast cars or GP2 might be faster than the new teams. and that will just upset Luca.

  • James05/07/2010 at 15:38

they may as well get used to a lack of overtaking early :)

who knows they might make it work.

  • Pat W05/07/2010 at 15:45

it doesn't have to be fast though. it just has to give drivers a feel for f1.

Has to be fast enough to be the quickest development series around (the main competition is themselves in World Series), but not fast enough to beat F1 cars.

You might say with HRT, GP2, WSR and an effective F3 monopoly that Dallara had the 'Road to F1' mapped out spectacularly well.

  • Pat W05/07/2010 at 15:46

they may as well get used to a lack of overtaking early :)

Most of them have driven in F3 so they are already used to it.. :)

i have no idea what this means, but it sounds... interesting, from @scarbs on twitter:

    --

Red Bull retard their ignition on the overrun in [qualiying] to keep exhaust flow thru their EBD. Retarding the ignition means the fuel ignites after the exhaust valve opens and keeps burning & expanding in the exhaust, like a turbo antilag system, it will overheat the engine, ex.valve and exhaust if used too much, plus it burns more fuel. All controlled via the SECU & is legal, it can't be used too much due to the overheating and fuel consumption, ie only in [qualifying]

the reason for franck's exit at le mans? conditions were too good!

The weather stayed cool and, unlike previous years, the air/air intercoolers did not become clogged up. The filling of the combustion chambers remained extremely efficient throughout, which in turn meant that the performance delivered by the engines was particularly high.

What it means is that instead of having their spark plugs spark after the compression stroke and creat a power stroke they wait until the exhaust strok and ignite the fuel causing it to generate/maintain downforce. THe big problem with feeding exhaust gases into a diffuser or under a wing is that it generates downforce while the driver's foot is on the floor but when he is off the throttle he loses downforce. Worse than that in mid corner he can lift off to control a slide and doing so he loses rear downforce which makes it worse. Every time the driver jumps on or off the throttle he also cause a pitch change.

so how are the drivers coping?

Walking into Ari Vatanen's car immediatedly made me happier though :)

  • Steven Roy05/07/2010 at 17:36

so how are the drivers coping?

I am not sure about that but way back in the 80s someone (Renault?) fed the exhausts under their rear wing and had all sorts of problems.

When we had turbos teams used to feed fuel into the exhaust when the driver was off throttle to keep the turbos spinning at their normal speed so Red Bull is not doing something that has never been thought of before

  • me05/07/2010 at 17:40

i think scarbs got his info from james allen, who says:

    --

One interesting observation is that Red Bull has a setting on the engine, whereby the ignition is retarded on the over run, which maintains exhaust gas pressure even when the driver lifts off the throttle. This maintains the performance of the blown diffuser and keeps the downforce up when it’s most needed.

"it sucks that our car didn't become clogged up"?

They are saying the intercoolers didn't clog up. THe intercooler cools air before itis fed into the combustion chamber. Cooler air = greater weight of oxygen = more fuel can be fed in so you get a bigger bang. They must measure and adjust for air temp/oxygen weight in the fuel injection. I don't understand how that would break con rods though.

It is an interesting approach but only for qualifying. I guess this is the mysterious ride control system that everyone was looking for and proves all the mechanics standing around the back of the car was a con.

"it sucks that our car didn't become clogged up"?

Mike Fuller from Mulsanne's Corner said on Facebook:

"Peugeot's released a press release today that says, in effect, their engine failures were simply because they couldn't handle the pace; "Indeed, the track benefited from high levels of grip this year, so the engines spent longer at full throttle than we expected.

At the same time, the weather stayed cool and, unlike previous years, the air/air intercoolers did not become clogged up. The filling of the combustion chambers remained extremely efficient throughout, which in turn meant that the performance delivered by the engines was particularly high."

That, and they had new conrods this year...hmmm."

    :)

I'm not sure how In feel about it, I did see it earlier but I dunno. Seems a bit too F1 for me but maybe that's a good thing?

  • Jon Waldock05/07/2010 at 20:35

    Looks awesome :D

Its a bit too Sauber for my liking, big GP3 car with a bit of F1. I await more pictures :D

If it were a Formula 1 car among the current crop of Formula 1 cars that would be fine... but it isn't. It needs to look a bit different.

  • Jon Waldock05/07/2010 at 20:36

I'm not sure how In feel about it, I did see it earlier but I dunno. Seems a bit too F1 for me but maybe that's a good thing?

I don't think it is, GP2's getting Pirelli f1 tyres next year aswell. They want it to be a mini-f1

  • RG05/07/2010 at 20:36

Its a bit too Sauber for my liking, big GP3 car with a bit of F1. I await more pictures :D

Your just saying that because there's no sponsors on it and its completely white... umm, we do have sponsors of course...

  • Scott Woodwiss05/07/2010 at 20:36

I'm not sure how In feel about it, I did see it earlier but I dunno. Seems a bit too F1 for me but maybe that's a good thing?

Well it'll certainly help drivers in the series experience the closest thing to a current spec F1 car without driving one.

  • Jon Waldock05/07/2010 at 20:37

Your just saying that because there's no sponsors on it and its completely white... umm, we do have sponsors of course...

and because of the sticky outy front

  • Jon Waldock05/07/2010 at 20:37

Well it'll certainly help drivers in the series experience the closest thing to a current spec F1 car without driving one.

The current one laps faster than HRT's, they do race current f1 cars ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss05/07/2010 at 20:39

The current one laps faster than HRT's, they do race current f1 cars ;)

    I meant aerodynamically of course.

  • Lukeh05/07/2010 at 20:39

Scott, you may like this. Someone at the Lotus interview asked Heikki and Crofty if they play racing simulation games :)

Scott, you may like this. Someone at the Lotus interview asked Heikki and Crofty if they play racing simulation games :)

Oops, at Goodwood I meant to say, and Crofty confirmed that he is in F1 2010 as a pitlane reporter eeeek :D

  • Jon Waldock05/07/2010 at 20:40

    I meant aerodynamically of course.

hehe indeed. Its all well and good making GP2 like F1, but that means theres an even bigger gap down to GP3 which is the route GP2 Motorsport want drivers to do

  • Scott Woodwiss05/07/2010 at 20:40

Oops, at Goodwood I meant to say, and Crofty confirmed that he is in F1 2010 as a pitlane reporter eeeek :D

    I knew that ;)

    So, what was Heikki's response?

  • lou & Lukeh05/07/2010 at 20:41

Oops, at Goodwood I meant to say, and Crofty confirmed that he is in F1 2010 as a pitlane reporter eeeek :D

and Heikki confirmed that there is yet to be a good formula 1 simulation game that he would play. he plays rally ones apparently.. under funky names?..

  • Lukeh05/07/2010 at 20:41

    So, what was Heikki's response?

he doesn;t like F1 games as they're never very good (hence crofty jumping in) but he does enjoy playing rally games and TOCA games/touring car games but with a proper steering wheel etc

  • RG05/07/2010 at 20:41

Oops, at Goodwood I meant to say, and Crofty confirmed that he is in F1 2010 as a pitlane reporter eeeek :D

Wasn't Holly confirmed too or was that my imagination?

  • Scott Woodwiss05/07/2010 at 20:41

Hmm, Richard Burns Rally is the only rally sim I know of.

  • Lukeh05/07/2010 at 20:42

Wasn't Holly confirmed too or was that my imagination?

Not sure, I think she is. I hadn't seen any confirmation of Crofty though just rumours.

i asked earlier because there are several mentions of various times in that film and 25 years from summer of '85 would be around now.

I can see it now anyways. The doctor travels to Earth, in the year 4023, and Comic Sans has taken over the world. Children write in it, signs are made in it, the giant bridge between moon, earth and the newly created Virgin Planet project all have signs in comic sans. Typography needs a doctor. But the doctor needs a typography expert.
