Hello there, it’s Gavin again, author of the F1 stats blog ‘Making Up The Numbers’ – which means it’s Wednesday, or ‘Hump Day’ if you are so inclined.
- In fact, today is my Monday because as I mentioned last week, I have been busy moving house (and cities) from Odense to Copenhagen. I have basically spent the last week moving out, cleaning the old house so well that you could have removed any existence of us living there, then moving all the stuff to the new place, building everything up, connecting up stuff and then unpacking and putting everything away. But we feel like we’ve done really well, and the new flat is really awesome, so we are very happy :D
- Things I learnt from the move:
(1) You can never throw out too much stuff beforehand;
(2) Family are both a great help and a hindrance to you;
(3) You end up having to buy so many things you need while unpacking! But like I said, the move was a success and now we have to get used to our new way of life…
- F1 News? Well, there seems to have been a proposal for an F1 race in Jersey City, which our friend Joe has blogged about. I reckon this sounds like a great idea and I am really excited about it myself!
- There have been mixed reviews about the new Silverstone layout, with some drivers not liking it too much and Pat cautiously optimistic. But you have to see James Allen team up with his old mate Martin Brundle driving around the new circuit in HD - I think it will work well for F1 cars and I love the fact that they have named one of the new parts the ‘Wellington Straight’ – as I lived in Wellington, NZ for just over 10 years ;)
- Finally, have you seen the spectacular crash that Ricardo Teixera had in the F2 race yet? It’s an absolute classic and will no doubt be on those ‘Crash Fest’-Type programs for years to come. Again, Joe is the source of the info and you can enjoy it because no one gets hurt, but the best part is the second video taken from an in-car view of another driver – watch how poor Ricardo just flies over his head!
Well that’s all from me for now – enjoy your Wednesday and see you in the comments!
Gavin.
Star Wars day is over
Cor two plugs in a row, thanks Gavin :) Doesn't mean anyone is reading or commenting on it though, I guess nobody is that interested or it was just poorly written. Or too long. Still learning this blogger lark.
Oops. I just bought a new mobile phone....
Sounds like you did it accidently
Well I didn't wake up this morning thinking "I know what I need....." I guess I have 14 days to send it back :P
I wonder how long you could go buying phones and sending them back before you ran out of phone suppliers
Hahaha
I might keep it actually. Thinking about it, I haven't had a new phone since 2006. Plus this one will save me a small fortune on skype calls.
I watched a video review. I've decided the phone is too new and shiny to send back.
What phone is it?
Which phone is it?
I keep phone. I've decided I love it. RIP 4 year old Nokia....
have ya told us what it is yet?
What kind of phone is it?
Magic skypephone.
oooh wow. that is a fab piece of kit. no more mobile doohickey for you
What's a magic skypephone?
Yeah. I can't even install skype app on ancient nokia. My life costs me a fortune. I think I can justify this under efficiency savings :P
this one i think: http://www.htc.com/www/product/magic/overview.html
shiny shiny!!
It looks shiny to me
morning folks - anyone about?
just out of bed after a good evenings sleep
:)
I'm up and about!
hey jpancoast,
what goes on?
Not much, went karting tonight, now gotta work on last CS project of this semester.
oh sweet // interesting
I'm happy about my shiny shiny new phone. I best go to sleep now though or I'll never get up for work. That isn't how one pays for shiny shiny things :(
am now too awake for sleep
:/
which one did you get? the Magic? Is it an android phone?
My wife and I just got HTC Incredibles last week.
They do indeed live up to their name!
my phone makes phone calls (sometimes)
It's very shiny and a lot more snazzy than anything I've ever owned before. I'm a complete moron when it comes to phones. My understanding is in minus numbers. This is probably an argument against ordering phones in the middle of the night on the internet.
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/05/05/new-rules-f1-does-it-the-traditional-way/
good to hear :)
and now i must sleep, night leigh and anyone else who's still awake
night mr c
I am in lame leadership training all day. One question was to name a leader you admire and I said Ron Dennis and no one knew who he was :D
I hate those meetings. A means to an end if the end is nowhere
Mr C for when you wake up...
A short article on the difference between how the Mac and Windows font rendering works (which you may well know everything in): http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2007/06/12.html
And then for when you are ready to really geek out on font rendering you may graduate to this monster article which, needless to say, I found fascinating:
http://www.antigrain.com/research/font_rasterization/index.html
Hey folks,
Not amazing, but I'm quite happy with it

:)
Morning Sidepodcast!
I got lost cycling to work this morning (Google Maps told me to cycle up a Motorway) but I still made it on time ;)
Morning everyone. Another lovely day outside to point and laugh at being stuck in doing this assignment, boo.
What is your assignment about?
Making a facebook style website but for senior citizens. There's a real company behind this that want to look at our final ideas but I just want to geget it out the way and finish uni now :)
I wish I was doing that. I'm stuck writing thousands of words :(
Gosh, everyone is so productive today! What are you writing about?
If it is actually usable and doesn't change all the time, I would like to use that site please. :)
I have to write up my project log. I also have a 5000 word report to write at some point!
we have a list of objectives to reach the final aim and this is our first objective from the outcome:
1. Don't mess around with features not needing messing around with and remember to keep the functions of the site practical and easy to use
it's like our little poke at facebook if you will ;)
morning folks
These word counts all seem enormous. The only word count I've ever had to stick to is 400.
never. writing. 15k. again.
Hiya leigh, how are you?
not too bad Lukeh - very happy with this morning's work
:D
It should be straight forward. I just need all the supporting evidence so I actually have something to talk about in those 5000 words :)
Christine I'm not sure if you say my Cs5 blog post last night but I may have made the Bahrain GP a more realistic memory for you: http://toata.wordpress.com/2010/05/04/79-miami-cs5/
Oooh.
1) That's incredible.
2) That's what it was like!
I'm still gobsmacked it worked. when you try it with quite complex photos in terms of detail it is a bit funny but eventually, for 10 or so clicks of a buton, it came out quite staggering. The others were just a few clicks as well, my mind was definitely blown.
That sounds really interesting. Do give us some more details if/when you can?
I am looking at all my emails and about to go to a department meeting :)
i hope no one minds if i re-plug this
:)
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2010/05/05/interview-karun-chandhok-hispania-racing-formula-1-driver/
must now re-hibernate in work (employment mode...)
7am feels like far too long ago
Oooooh!
wow! Awesome!
safe to say, i'm in a good mood today
:D
Interesting, Christian Klien will be in the HRT on Friday morning
http://www.hispaniaf1team.com/en/home/125-hrt-f1-team-hispania-racing-signs-christian-klien-as-a-reserve-and-test-driver
Christian Klien will be part of the team’s race weekend preparations and drive on Friday morning at the Spanish Grand Prix during its first European race in its inaugural season. Christian will also provide car development support back to the team, assisting drivers Karun Chandhok and Bruno Senna.
whatever happened to yamamoto?
Looks like he's still there but just there doing nothing.
Grrrr.
Never gonna be a fan are you? :)
I hold grudges.
I know one girl who will be veeeeeery happy and one who will be quite the oppsoite.
and there one of them is now.
is klien was angry at toro rosso, i wonder how he'll be driving the hrt car
:o
Oh dear. I am so predictable!
its ok, grudges are perfectly acceptable.
OMG!
I've just discovered it's spelt Flintstones, not Flinstones...
My life has been a lie!!!
you called them the flinstones? I blame the Welsh accent. :D
Erm, because, you know, flintstone is an actual stone. :)
Here's another Film Watch post that I'd forgotten I scheduled: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/05/05/film-watch-53-ghostbusters-ii/
I only have two more and then I'll be up to date. First time since Christmas.
the amount of movies you have posted recently makes me think that I don't watch anywhere near enough movies. Now that my flatmate who dragged me to the theatre with her has moved to London I think I'll probably watch even less.
Yes, I hadn't anticipated this many when I began. But that's okay, I've got a lot of catching up to do!
I think rather than watch movies this weekend I need to play Lost catchup again. I'm 4 episodes behind again, I don't know how this keeps happening :D
There are only four left!
I need to catch up so I can finish it when the rest of the world finishes it so I don't get spoiled, because for once I don't want to be :D
The couple of days between it airing and us getting it are going to be a nightmare.
and then we get it a week after the UK! I don't think I'll cope. I might have to use dubious secret means.
I need to catch up on about 6 weeks of Flash Forward. I think if I just watch this week's episode I might find out everything I need to know, right?
oooh Jake says no DC in Barcelona. I wonder if EJ will be more tolerable without having someone he can constantly disagree with
I don't blame you.
I geniunely thought they were flinstones. I feel bad not knowing this :(
Aww. They're still great though.
next I'll be finding out there's a p in simpsons and everything
(don't worry, I know there is)
Yay a Kindle software update! I want it now!
The organisation thing I have wanted for soooo long.
Hello.
Just catching up, lots of tabs to open and read over lunch, I like it. :)
Here's another one!
http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/05/05/3d-vs-hd/
Ooh, good plugging if I do say so myself.
I don't seem to find time for movies. I have a backlog.
No you'll be lost I think. It is worth watching them, even though there's a couple of slow ones
Ta muchly ;)
My wife doesn't care for HD - even though you can clearly see it's better she ain't bothered!
I didn't to start with. And when I buy on iTunes, I still buy SD because I am cheap. But watching LOST in HD has really opened my eyes to it.
Unless you're not that into it of course :)
I am into it, just that moving house consumed me. Now I have extra time I can start to watch them again :D
Yay for Claire! http://twitter.com/ClaireVWilliams/status/13418239270
Morning all.
Can you design in a feature for fiddling about with exact change at checkouts?
Pat speaks the truth.
Sorry Christine, I ended up leaving two comments about the HD vs. 3D thing. But you should all read this article by Roger Ebert as he makes some very good points...
First time for everything :)
It plods along for a bit then suddenly something important happens
I'm still at the 'plodding with a little reveal 30 seconds before the end' stage...
I do not have a comment limit.
we spoke to another family member at the weekend, who still insists on watching video cassettes
am currently seeking legal advice as to whether we can disown them
:)
I have some videos of stuff but no idea how to watch them. I've gotta try copying them over to digital media at some point...
I hear betamax is going to be the new video cassette soon
wow
They even say it twice...
Television: *Flintstones*
'lil' Lukeh: *Flinstones*
Television: *Meet the Flintstones*
'lil' Lukeh: *It's the Flinstone Yabadoooo*
Television: *Yababadabadoo*
:)
out of interest, where do you weigh in on the helvetica versus lucida debate, and is the temporary change worth keeping?
http://sidepodcast.com/2010/05/04/an-f1-fans-tale-of-avoiding-grand-prix-results/
same question to everybody, who has two mins to kill
It was with some pleasure that I consigned our VCR to the tip last weekend, although (curiously) Mrs C has yet to sanction the removal of video tapes from the house!
Pretty much :)
That's sorta the situation we are in...
I'd say yes... I like it... It seems better spaced to be honest.
I noticed it last night and I quite liked it. Don't know what that means if anything but it looks pretty ;)
ta. just to try and out geek you. care to guess why the whole of apple's website is in lucida grande, except for steve's rant out flash? which oddly is in verdana?
(i must get out more, really)
Verdana is open sourced?
the only real question is, do you find it easier to read long paragraphs of text compared to what it was previously?
for a direct comparison, realtime is still in the other typeface: http://sidepodcast.com/realtime/
:) :)
Seriously.
i guess the question is, how long did she keep hold of your audio cassettes?
http://www.thedesignbuzz.net/apple-switches-to-verdana/
If you really want to be confused I turned ClearType on at work and everything looks great.... apart from Doohickey, which looks more blocky
That was an April fools by the way... Funny that Steve then did it...
i've spent a lot of time thinking about typefaces! i've looked at thousands of sites in the most unbelievable detail. it's not an easy choice :)
did you know for example, autosport use lucida for text on the homepage, but verdana for text on news and articles?
how weird
ha. brilliant :)
There may still be some around somewhere...
In other news, I'm voting for Helvetica.
I
do not caredid not know that, no.ooh, ta
ouch :)
i get the impression, my attention to typeface detail might annoy joe too :)
I'm going to upgrade to Snow Leopard in a few weeks (pending the arrival of certain delayed cheques)
Hello all. Just wanted to contribute to the debate; I use Windows 7.
I've compared the two Daily posts & I prefer the lucida one as it seems better set out.
Looking at the home page, I find a lot of lucida spikey and less friendly. Also, the headings look squashed. I think it's because I've always used arial at work so I'm familiar with it and I view it as rounded and friendly.
My request would be for posts in lucida, headings and comments in arial but I don't think that would be practical.
If I have to choose I would say lucida as I'm sure I'll get used to it and it makes a lot of text easier to read.
I'm with Steven on Wingdings as it makes the first letter of my name a smiley face :)
I do know this yes! Thanks to photoshop and more boredom :)
I realised something was weird when the articles were playing up one time...
For a while I had a thing where the whole text on articles originally stayed the correct font but then went to Times New Roman and a larger font. It's stopped doing it not but it was really annoying
That's what I had. Did they suggest subscribing to PLUS to get rid of the issue? ;)
Oh dear...McLaren wouldn't rearrange the pit tour :( Hope Joe will still allow us onboard later in the day!
Good Q&A Leigh
cheers pat
How did you get that sorted by the way? Impressive!
I e-mailed Suhail Chandhok (his brother / PR manager-chap) about a possible interview, but also pointed him towards samples of the site to have a look at. Hopefully, they liked what they saw...
ace. it's mostly been good to me. i still have a few printing issues, but they've nailed almost all of the initial bugs.
yum - the chicken burger i just had was yum, but i do worry that my waist will explode
:o
from my experience of doing both a Joe audience and a McLaren tour, the tours don't tend to last more than 20 minutes or so, and people were turning up well after Joe begun, he didn't even start bang on the start time because he gave people a chance to mingle and chat. I think you'll have no trouble going there after the pit tour and you won't miss much at all.
cheers janna. the headings can easily be different. how does baskerville grab you? it's currently the typeface of the subheading, which at the moment reads "Every Week and Every Race Day"
yay. affinity with lukeh
ahh shoot. am sure he'll be okay with that, but keep us posted 4chords
anyhoo, best head back to work
see you later
:)
Another plus point of moving to Copenhagen: It has KFC, Dominos and Starbucks ;)
:O
Now you just need a yummy bakery... :)
It's all right but a bit squashed. I'm not sure I can explain this correctly but the text in the posts is better spaced than the text in the headings. If the spacing was the same I would like it more.
Oh there's plenty of those ... Denmark runs on Bakeries ;)
Oohh Lukeh, you will be pleased to know we now have 2 Greggs in Worthing - twice the yumminess
Woohoo!
Funny story - my parents in law love where we live but were disappointed that they had to drive 3km to a bakery to get the bread and Danish!
Now thats dedication :)
The whole country closes down for the holidays - save for the bakeries, who are open at 6am as per usual!
got ya. cheers
Just checked on my phone (Android) and the Baskerville looks loads better than it does on my PC. It must be really frustrating to get something looking just the way you want it to on one platform only for people not to like it on another.
mmmmm.... ANDROID....
How incredible is your Incredible?
Pretty darn Incredible!
*EU Trading Standards laws still apply...
Good thing I don't live in the EU! :)
is that why they haven't released it here?
tell me about it. although, i guess if i wanted it the another way, i'd have to be working in print.
or just make the changes you want & don't worry about the rest of us ;)
the problem is, i just can't decide
grrr Bill Bailey is coming back to Melbourne and I want to go because last time he came while I was in Singapore and I missed out. It's not cheap though, Saving money is harrrrrrd.
plus while, i'm happy to say any users stuck on ie6 can take a running jump, i think if you're using a decent browser you should at least get a reasonable browsing experience
I should be one of those then - we are forced to choose IE6 or FF2 at work here!
complete madness, but i know that's what a lot of companies do. the site will almost certainly look like a dogs dinner in either of those browsers
Mr C. I love you :D
hehe :)
It doesn't work in IE6.
Doohickey works in FF2 but LCLT and 'New Daily' struggle with script errors when there are a lot of comments to load!
my uni project works in ie6...just. it tends to load blank pages but a quick refresh and everything is fine. i think i've been overly nice to those still using ie6 :)
But it will be worth it. Have not seen him live but watched the Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra DVD at Christmas, absolutely fabulous.
eh? it works, it just looks... ropey. right?
Some might consider a picture of someone giving you the finger would be a reasonable browsing experience for IE 6 and FF 2 users.
Well, maybe that's just me, I never did like users :)
i think by supporting ie6, you're basically saying that vhs tapes are ok
;)
Exactly. For me that's not really functional...
Totally awesome DVD that
Talking of fonts and stuff: http://xkcd.com/736/
And that you're happy to watch TV in your undies out on the street...
fair enough. i'm with jpancoast and james. eventually you have to move on or you'll still be supporting gramaphone users
:D
genius
so basically you're with James (my real name) and James.
I agree entirely. But there are a lot of people out there who treat computers like they are cars - even if they are old, if they work, then you keep using them!
:D
SAAAANS SERRIIIIFFF!!!!!
we just passed woking for the second time today! how exciting! mum refuses to go looking for the mtc. oh and thank you for fixing the red mr c :)
I hadn't seen sidepodcast in ie6 until just now: http://img294.imageshack.us/i/ie6.png/
Just shows how far browsers have moved on.
hehe. that is quite bad.
but in other ways i think it makes a pretty clear statement :)
Thats a unique design there
We have like 25 or so people in my group, 3 James'. Since I was there first the other two are Jim's
Woohoo!
New browser-specific 'sleeping' pic.
but in some good news IE as a whole now only makes up 59% of the total. http://www.netmarketshare.com/browser-market-share.aspx?qprid=0
Its slow but people are seeing the light ;)
much less on spc. i looked recently and ie6 was less than 10%
mind you... having seen the homepage
hehe :D
the next hurdle is going to be IE7. I hate to think how long that will stick around for.
how does spc look in that? ie7 was quite a bit better if i recall.
It works! :) http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/3446/ie7.png
i need to fix the arrow anyhow, so once that's done, i'm happy for ie7 to stick around. it really just is ie6 that needs killing off
indeed. ie9 should be a massive step forward. although they will probably be behind again once the next versions of firefox and chrome arrive :D
Lots of bands release singles on 7"
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83332
Jersey City has given up on its plans to host a Formula 1 race in the future, with its mayor canning the project just one day after it was made public.
They took advice well from the USF1 project
I've got that but not watched it yet - I've seen him live though, very very good
crazy people :)
One day!
4 hours longer than Lopez' F1 career though!
Oh what a surprise. Why would Jersey pay for a race when NY would get all the benefit and people would travel from NY every day for the race. I was surprised Joe was so positive about it because when an NY race was discussed before he was dismissive about it quoting hotel occupancy etc. A night race in that time zone is beyond insane.
Christian Klien making an F1 comeback
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/05/05/hrt-goes-for-kliens-experience/
"Christian is a young and fast driver"
but not as young or as fast as senna/chandock?
He's not young at all in F1 terms is he?
Positively middle-aged.
he's not very fast either is he?
i do like how much f1 teams lack in originality. force india start a friday driver thing and now they all want a go. what changed since last year?
I know he doesn't mind crashing at crucial moments.
:D
oh lordy :)
head ping for rg, klien needs your support...
He's not that bad. Another Heidfeld IMO. Quick, capable, nothing stellar
Most F1 teams will copy anything. Look at all the F ducts this year and KERS and double diffusers last year. No-one was interested in young drivers till Hamilton appeared now that is all anyone wants.
but hamilton was around last year, and still no friday drivers
Did a rule change?
not so far as i know, unless i forgot something?
I was thinking about rac drivers. All anyone wanted before him was experience and now they want young guys. The Friday thing is clearly new this year and I have no idea why it started.
Don't know. I guess that is one for Alianora
Which is why we have to make it obvious that they don't work
the badoer experience?
I am sure that didn't help anyone with experience and neither did Fisi's Ferrari performance.
More to do with experience I think. He's there to fix the car. Chandhok told Leigh he and Senna could manage - I disagree and apparently so do the team
also a good point.
It will be interesting to see what Klien can do if he only drives Friday mornings. Half that session is spent getting a set up to suit the track before he can even start sensible testing. I can't imagine HRT have any data from previous seasons from other teams that will let them arrive with a near optimum set ups.
hello everyone! :)
hullo, how did it go?
Hi Lou. How did the interview go?
i did text you (i think) *humph* :P
My phone says otherwise, stupid phone :(
when was the last time klien ran at barca?
It might have been 2009 if he was testing for BMW pre-season then?
Hey folks..
hey rg
hey lou.
it went alright thanks, really really loved the town and the uni. It's a fine art course so it would be pretty challenging to start with but i was interviewed by the course director and he was really nice, bit crazy but we got on fine. :) all the students seem nice too.
Oooh, awesome. Crazy is always good.
I am glad you enjoyed it.
i might have text your old number...
Oooh, well, sounds good :)
Off to work for me anyways, hopefully will be back in time for the quiz at 8:30. Byee!
Woohoo
Emma is getting paid by the Sun
http://twitter.com/Deltachild/status/13416141703
brilliant news
i got there and i really wanted to go home i was so nervous, but it turnedout okay
You have to remember everyone is nervous so there is no need for you to be. Let everyone else worry about how good you are.
Twit.tv is down for everyone not just me :(
http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/twit.tv
Odd... both seem to work for me?
Meadia Temple not fail. Very confusing
http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/sidepodcast.com
On the dead site front, I see that Pit Lane mag appears to be mort...
Wow that's a pretty big security flaw on Facebook:
http://eu.techcrunch.com/2010/05/05/video-major-facebook-security-hole-lets-you-view-your-friends-live-chats/
hehehe it was talking to the students which calmed me down actually. one walked me to my interview and she was so nice, she said the others had been really anti social towards her but i seemed friendly and like i would fit in well :) she even gave me a few tips for my interview as i was going in.
oh lord, what a disaster
ouch. fourstar might be on to something :)
oh and i even got offered a job in the pub we had lunch in! I got chatting to the owner and she offered me a job, she was disappointed when i said i was only in the area for an interview.
Glad I never signed up!
I am not surprised. They were more anonymous than Mr C. I got several e-mails asking if I would write stuff for them last year and they still haven't told me the site has been launched or what it is called. I haven't had a single word from them since Feb/Mar.
That is very positive.
Ask her if she can hold the job until September
she said for me to come back if i need a job when at uni. Farnham is awesome :)
Blimey. Where was this?
I tell you, it’s so hard to get the staff these days. I took Mrs C for a drink in our local on Monday late afternoon/early evening, and when we eventually got served (girl behind the bar had one eye on the football and the other on her phone) Mrs C’s wine glass turned out to be utterly filthy – even had lipstick on it. The girl giggled while apologising and fished out another glass, which was a smaller one (apparently this establishment now only has one large wine glass). Having decanted the contents, and found that not all of the wine would fit in the smaller glass, she tipped the rest of it down the sink and without another word went back to her viewing/texting.
Since you get very little change from a tenner for a pint and a large/small wine at this place, I won’t be going back…
See. All you had to do was find a uni in a town that starts with F that had an F1 world champion. Simple
erm i think it was called the Shepard & Flock..
Suddenly chat is down for maintenance...
Good riddance to them!
On a big roundabout? That's our new local now that we've sacked the other place. It's a marvellous establishment.
As to the denizens of UCA, though, I have a colossal downer at the moment...
The fellow who ran it seemed to have no idea how the media, the internet, intellectual property laws or F1 in general works.
yep, i had the nicest lunch ever... :D so friendly too.
oh?
our local pub serving lady was kicking up quite a fuss recently, because management had removed solitaire from the computerised till.
Last time we went to the pub in the UK (The Traveller's Rest, if you must know) we had a lovely lady serve us.
At least in the UK you get a chance of someone being nice - here in Denmark you're just a transaction...
Some of them are quite rough. We have a big problem with our neighbours on the noise/drug-dealing/general ASB front. A couple of weekends ago someone came banging on their door demanding money, and after he left a detachment of them went off looking for him – while wielding gold clubs. Not nice people.
I have no idea who he is even though I had a few e-mails from him. I ony saw the site once when someone here linked to it.
I am sure you will raise the tone. Students are ment to be annoying to old folk like Stuart.
:D
I wonder why they removed it.
*waves*
I'm nice*
*to most people (puts away golf club)
Howdy everyone, I am 99% sure I'm leaving Bucks this year, just got to fill in paper work! Busy week!
oh goodness that doesn't sound nice at all! All of the photography students i met today seemed nice though.
One thing that appealed to me was that there really wasn't any barriers between the different years, MA students helped out and were having coffee with first year BA students and everyone seemed to get on (in the photography section anyway). They also have a room with about 25 Macs in! and the most amazing film developing facilities (not as good as Falmouth, but almost). I'm prepared to chance sharing halls with some scary people like that for a year if i get to use facilities like that i think... oh and their camera rental department is huge, and mostly full of large nikon lenses, all that can be rented for free. wohoo! ;)
Indeed so.
…In the interests of balance I should point out that the occupants of the next house along, who are also students, clearly loathe them as well. There’s no fence between their gardens (same landlord owns both houses and failed to replace the fence when it collapsed) so when next-door-but-one threw a party the other night they attempted to build a barricade with furniture and clingfilm to prevent the chavs from gatecrashing.
ooo! heading anywhere nice?
:D
Oxfooooooord
nice :) the course you wanted to take last year?
yup :)
ah that's great :)
So they have loads of Macs and huge lenses. What else could you possibly need?
A girl in next-door-but-one has a clearly bizarre photographic project on the go. One night last October I saw lights outside and couldn’t help peeking. She had studio lights set up in the garden and was photographing some fellow lying on a mattress in just his pants. A month or two back they were at it again, this time in a howling gale and with him dressed in a silver leotard and a blond wig. Sadly, the shoot came to a premature end because the chavs had started to heckle…
If you find yourself with disagreeable people you can always find somewhere else because there are plenty of accommodation options. The previous lot we had next door were nice enough…
This sounds a lot like a Dad's Army episode with added cling film.
and they are close to Woking! :P
And Thruxton and Castle Combe(I think).
You'll find that most people are lovely in halls, you'll always get a couple of people who aren't that nice but on the whole you'll find people to be very sociable
hehe sounds interesting :)
:) yeah if i get in i'm sure i'll manage.
and nearish to brands... :D
No need to venture that far. Your nearest motorsport venue is...
http://www.spedeworth.co.uk/venue.php?name=aldershot
I haven't been to stock car racing in years.
:) hehe and brooklands is kinda close too :) lol
There are also loads of karting tracks in the area
http://www.karting.co.uk/Tracks/
Evening all,
I am sat in the most comfortable chair in the world :D
I never knew there was motorsport at aldershot? I could have gobe last year
Do you also have Ducks to make it up to Alison?
I have cushions... i got ones made from foam instead of ducks, does that count?
Did you buy the chair that Alison didn't like?
It worries me that you considered ones made of ducks...
I got the L shaped sofa to appease her!
appease is probably a bad choise of word
#oops
#sorry!
it's almost the perfect location ;)
Fortunatly ikea dont have them
#stilldoesntlikeikea
Thank god. I didn't want to have to go to the Jersey Shore to watch a race. I love F1 but not that much.
Someone posted that earlier. I think the whole thing was dreamt up to get Indy to stump up more cash. The whole idea was ridiculous
...But you could have worn a muscle vest!
am pretty sure
wealex can find a use for this:Starting next week you will finally be able to video call with up to five people using [Skype's] Group Video Calling feature
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/05/skype-to-roll-out-five-way-video-calling-next-week-remote-party/
Agree. I'm still in shock from when Joe said that F1 passed up on buying the Long Beach race. That would of been the best option for all.
I don't have enough hair left to use the require amount of hair product. Plus, I really need to bulk up on the roids.
They waited till Kathi had left Finland before they launched it.
Bernie should have hung on to Long Beach when F1 had a race there but he decided to play hard ball with Chris Pook when Pook told him he was going to do a deal with CART by a certain date if Bernie didn't sign. Bernie was so convinced that CART wasn't an option he waited for the date to pass so he could do a cheap deal. On the date concerned the CART deal was done and F1 lost an iconic race.
hehe!
Its news to me, but perhaps not propperly, Di Resta will be comenting on 5 live which could be awesome
evening folks
He did a session at the last race. He was really good
wohooo!
I'm glad that the only bad thing that happened with F1 in the states. It's been smooth sailing since...
oh wait...
So if he was to get the seat, who would you move out Sutil or Luizzi? I can't make up my mind on that one.
Stuart,
are you sure it "collapsed"?
To be honest, there's no way it'll be Indy - the sisters will never fork out that kind of cash.
I am not sure. I have changed my mind a couple of times already this season.
Sutil.
Liuzzi, had he had a bit more luck, would be miles ahead of him...
I'd move Luizzi - I just don't think he's as fast and Sutil has reigned himself in a bit so far this season
Liuzzi - on recent form.
In fairness, I don't think it would be fair on either of them to lose a seat, they've both been, alright so far...
Just seen the tyre specs for the next four races - can't we just have super-super-soft and super-gripless-hard and be done with it?
Can we have super-duper-so-soft-that-they-melt-when-left-in-the-sun?
Can we have "Chewy like wine gums" spec tyres too?
Are these the tyres that allow Silverstone to be lapped in 59 seconds and then effectively let no one go any faster than 3 minutes per lap thereafter?
I like it!!
Does this mean we can make jell-o a tire manufacturer.
Would be great for rain tyres...
Aaaahh - for rain tyres, I would give the drivers bicycle tyres wrapped in clear plastic bags
That an idea for the tire regs for next year. You tires must be made out of food products that are consumable by a toothless man.
How very green!
We will need to decide on a dental organisation to fully define what a "toothless man" is? Plus we may need to address the toothless women's institute is well. They're based in Ipswich, so it's too far from me.
I am chewing on some Wine Gums now - they are very soft and sticky and I think it is the obvious answer to F1's tyre problems ;)
Currently checking out party manifesto's for tomorrow's election. If I had a fire, I'd probably be burning the Tory one right now.
I'll put them under a match to see how what they're like under extreme temperatures
Hmm. I've always been brought up to favour one party (which I have ended up supporting) but it seems like the choices are thus:
(1) Vote for the party you like with the PM you hate
(2) Vote for the PM you like but the party you hate
(3) Vote for the party who sounds really good but has no chance of winning because the electoral system is so bad that most of the votes for them are wasted.
Sounds like a bum deal to me!
I know it is tricky, but don't forget we steer clear of politics talk here.
Yeah, that sounds about right, except I'm not a Cameron fan at all and don't particularly go for some of the Tory policies
Is there going to be a page for it on Friday? It will inevitably be the talk of the town...
Nope. No politics.
Ah fair enough. I was trying to be as generic as possible.
On that note, Jake Humphrey tweeted something about filming something election-themed for the F1 coverage on Saturday...
k
Are they going to be dressed in yellow, blue and red shirts? I can see Eddie wearing odd things, but Jake....
There's no DC this weekend apparently...
Oh..?
DTM??
Wow. Skydiving madness: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1265891/Hold-think-youre-going-Skydiver-grabs-gliders-tail-fin-fly-2-100-metres-100mph.html
Suprised it's Red BUll ;)
When has F1 ever been a democracy?
I think Nick is avoiding me :P
He's left his laptop charger at work and now can't talk to me anymore :(
It's an illusion
he needs a super awesome skype phone ;)
Because Nick is never absent-minded? ;)
:D :D :D :D :D
I have one of those ... it's the phone Mr. C. said I was clearest on...
oh Alison, am just editing some pics of ducks :P
I think Jake said something about Mille Miglia (sp?)
Hello again btw. Went for a walk today & treated myself to a sherbert dip dab. Not had one for ages - took me back to my childhood (which I can just about remember ;))
is that what James Martin did last year? (and then did a tv programme about)?
I think so. From his tweets Chris Evans is doing it this year too.
ahhhh... the great 1000 mile race - i kind of wish they raced it in 1920's/30's cars though...
:)
I'd like to see Scrutineering.
Scrutineering will now take place at the post race banquet
how could i have not known this?

microsoft ruined my life
lawsuit??
i think so. stupid word '95 (or whatever it was). actually, it may have been outlooks fault
the second one is much harder to read though..
interesting. i find it easier. what about these two:
http://www.markboulton.co.uk/images/uploads/incorrect_quotes.gif
http://www.markboulton.co.uk/images/uploads/correct_quotes.gif
Who says they are correct?
typographers. i think.
am reading this: http://www.markboulton.co.uk/journal/comments/five-simple-steps-to-better-typography
the first one is a bit easier, although i can read both of them okay in that example... it's probably my dyslexia, it's much much easier to distinguish the separate bullet points and quotes if they are laid out like that. It's much easier to digest the information and order it. it could be that it's what i've always learnt though..
you're really getting into typography aren't you :)
hehe. i seem to have a lot of spare time on my hands :)
IMO there is no 'right' and 'wrong', there is only what has been before and what is now. Things like this are always evolving.
This guy is indenting his text like a 19th Century novel.
also true.
but if what we have now is a result of the limitations of early computing, should we stick with it now those limitations no longer exist?
If we want to.
it's interesting that i've spent the last ten years overriding css defaults which puts bullet points outside of the box, to make them more like an "outlook list"
i assumed it was just a rubbish default setting
I think it is what most people expect now, right or not
The VivaF1 quiz starts in 23 minutes.
Just enough time for a shower and to put the oven on, am quite hungry now. Stupid shopping delayed me. :)
would it be annoying if it was different. or just different?
No idea, would have to see it in action I think
:)
i know you said you like Jonsi.. and if anyone as a few moments this is an awesome article about him
http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2010/04/the-unbearable-lightness-of-being-jonsi.html
ooh ta
No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. No.
no?
No.
don't know if anyone has put this up yet, but webber's barcelona lap is up - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3PsUJqaK5M
good stuff, but i still hate that chicane prior to the final corner - an awful abomination of a thing

Good night guys - I think the combined 15km cycling today has really tired me out!

Post my shiny phone now please!!! :(
Thanks Leigh.
I'm sure it will come soon, I thought you only ordered it this morning?
a question about your shiny new awesome phone... does it have a camera?
Alison, i have a pic of a duck that looks like it's smiling... i thought you should see it :)
http://twitpic.com/1lbywf
That's a really cute picture :)
Mr Duck is the best duck ever :)
my mum and aunt now know about your knowledge of birds btw :D
Sorry Pat, I've had too much to do this evening to take part and general mood upon arriving home from work not long ago was not the best to concentrate on quiz :( will defo be back in there next week though.
Don't worry, means I hopefully have a chance :)
Did you have an anthropormorphic drama?

Quackquackquackquack... :)
Woooo happy times. I has dispatch email. Magic shiny phone will be mine tomorrow. Plus I think my cashback has tracked. It's amazing times :D

I also bought a new tax disk. Today might be the most efficient day of my life :P

Spot 5 differences:
http://i43.tinypic.com/nzow2d.png
wohoo!!
i wish my parents wouldn't keep coming into the study to talk to me... they keep giving me heart attacks.. my headphones are too good at blocking out sound from the outside world.
They'll come in and read that in a minute :)
i can't find the last one!
me neither, I have 4...
i found it!!!
that was a mean one.
I only got four
the last one is such a small difference it's almost impossible to see.
There's one on a logo which is really small, I saw that..
there is another one like that (only slightly more obvious).. which was the other tricky one for me.
I totally cannot find it!
do you want a clue?
go on then...
I'm on 2, totally not focused though. Annoyingly I think I found the hardest one first as I usually do.
to be fair you're spotting the difference between 4rd and 5th place :p
I have the answers link if you want to be left to your own willpower..
*tries to come up with a clue that doesn't give it away*
eeerrrrrr........
:D
if it's the one i'm thinking of that you haven't got.. it's says something important... not that we can understand what it says... but it does.
and to distract from that frankly awful clue...
I have some photos for you all to have a look at. Some of my best from Hampton court on Sunday

i don't even know what day of the week it is today lol
Answers are here, make sure you don't click this until you've at least had a go :)
(they aren't hidden as they sometimes are so you can't do the rest of the quiz)

Evening all
Hey Mr Steven.
hello
Hi
well everyone,
i'm back - any change since earlier on?
:)
Great pics Lou. Hampton Court looks a lot like Versailles.
I am not a fan of flower pictures but the first three pics all work. The sticky out petal is great and the hanging/drooping aspect of the first two works really well.
:) thank you
Hello Steeeeven
I am super organised today. Plus I have tomorrow off. It's good times. It's fine though. Nick has been very disorganised. So there's no universal unbalance or anything.
I worry about organised people. How is the finger? Oh and did Nick say anything about a chair?
#nothere
But this might be my last chance for a few days to remind you all that I'm not here for a radio show on Sunday and also that the Pole Poll is available from now here:
http://sofaf1.com/2010/05/05/spain-pole-poll-5/
Bed for me, not sure how I'll get any sleep, but we'll see. Night and lotsa love
We don't talk about that (the finger or the chair....)

Good plan
Ta
but hamilton was around last year, and still no friday drivers
Did a rule change? {Comment #237}
The rule changed back in 2008 - anyone with a superlicence may participate in FP1 and/or FP2 without needing to be the driver entered for the race. However until the mid-season spate of replacements/substitutions last year, all the teams thought the extra time their race drivers got to prepare for the circuit outweighed the benefits of preparing a young driver for the rigours of the race ahead of time.
Now teams (well, some of them) begin to see the wisdom of having drivers other than their racers get seat time in weekends.
Thanks Alianora

You're welcome. Steven :)
right, bed time for me. night all! xx

I'm testing new Spotify. It is rather good.
Hiiiiiiiiii
how is it different?
It can track your music collection either from iTunes or WMP playlists or by scanning your hard drive. Then you can make new playlists with your stuff in amongst the stuff available on their service.
Then it taps in to your Facebook profile (if you tell it to) and you can share your tracks and playlists with them, and you can view playlists they've made available, and you can collectively create one between you. Apparently works without Facebook if you give people your profile name
ooh, hadn't heard about that. cheers
Or just watch this: https://www.spotify.com/uk/about/social/
