Hello! and welcome to Thursday the 6th May 2010. The long wait between races is almost at an end, the first free practice session of the Spanish Grand Prix starts tomorrow after almost three weeks of no action. Also this weekend there is a Rally in New Zealand, I won't pretend to know anything about what is happening though. On this day back in 1994 the Channel Tunnel was officially opened although it wasn't until November when the passenger service began.
Now on to the bullet points!
- In some F1 News Jersey City 'canned' their F1 plans a day after it was made public, McLaren are in favour of the return of KERS, and the Hispania Racing team have signed up Christian Klien as their reserve driver.
- Google is releasing the next edition of Google search for all of us to use it comes complete with a left-hand menu bar and even an update to the well-known Google logo. Google's intention is to go for a cleaner and simpler look across the board.
- Yesterday in the comments Alex (of the Parade Lap, SofaF1 and Gamboling) linked us to an article over on TechCrunch which showed that there was a major security flaw on Facebook, within a few mouse clicks would enable any user to view the live chats of their friends and even see their friend requests.
- And because I feel I have to mention Doctor Who in the daily at least once; Leadworth the fictional town in which one Amy Pond comes from in the show is actually anagram of "Dr Who Late" which if you remember in the Eleventh Hour the Doctor had a habit of arriving later than he intended.
That is pretty much it for this daily post. I hope you enjoy today, lets us know what you are up to and I shall see you in the comments!
love the daily, hate the changes to google
I love the internet. I have decided I really can't live without it.
thankfully, unless you plan to move to iceland, you'll not need to
I'm looking at letting a room, so many of them don't come with internet and as it's not your house, you can't really install it. I really just don't comprehend how people live without it. Life must be so expensive....
Changing typeface is harder than you think
hehe. the silly coloured icons on the sidebar annoy me.
Hmmm I'm not sure. I have a very wide screen so I can deal with sidebars and stuff. It looks cluttered to me though which seems weird as they changed it all for "simplicity"
How do they know what is going on in the world and how do they cope without e-mail circulars or being the 100,000th person to visit a website?
:)
it almost seems like it's for "simple people"
I just bought a new phone but I got enough cashback online to pay for 7 months of use..... How do you pay bills or do anything???
:D
here's a lollipop with your search, can we make searching 'funner' for you?
Ooh, what did you choose?
It's shiny
Found the link. It's Magic

I'd think about joining but I think it's San Francisco only :)

;)
So no women allowed?
That is the most important part!
:)
It's not gay-centric, is billed for Apple fanboys or girls
Helvetica has changed the way you view the world
Yeah but how many women have you met that are hot for apple?
It's probably geek-central :D
In San Francisco
it really has
That's a truly terrifying thought.
Some things have me agreeing with Nick. This is a worrying thought. One of my friends just sent me this. It's very depressing.
"In Penrith & The Border, one person does not really have one vote, they have the equivalent of 0.068 votes."
Is that a proportional representation joke?
No it's a site that uses a snazzy formula to work out how marginal your seat is and roughly what your vote is worth in terms of affecting any kind of outcome. As I suspected, I might as well eat mine.
iPod Touch & iphone owners:
8 free games for today only
http://www.macintoshos.com/free-games-iphone-ipod-touch-ipad/102.html
Link?
http://www.voterpower.org.uk/penrith-the-border
I'm confused as to why they didn't make their formula regard 1 as the average....
"The average UK voter only has the power of 0.253 votes. This is because most of us live in safe seats"
Mine is 0.116 :(
[Grrr, Tessa Jowel]
There was someone one TV going on about that last night. They worked out which seats are marginal and how many people are likely to change their vote and you end up with the election being decided by a few thousand people
0.072
http://www.voterpower.org.uk/ayrshire-central
My mother's is 0.059
A conservative has won my seat as far back as I can be bothered to look. Definitely as far back as the WW2 though.
Same here but this time there's a chance to change it.
I should also say we have been advised to steer clear of politics.
Fair play.
Good point
As long as people remember/bother to vote
We don't have to dwell on it
I'm looking at you NICK!!!!
he gets to vote?
He would be allowed to yes. He has less than politely declined though.
Sure he does, expats are entitled
Whether they should let him or not is another issue ;)
i see. had no idea.
He's not allowed an ISA. That confused me a bit....
He can decide the future of the country but he can't save some money?
He's not a resident and tax payer of the UK
Makes sense
You can finance a political party without being a resident or a tax payer and have a peerage thrown in as well
Cos we shouldn't restrict that ;0
So you wouldn't need to pay tax on a standard account anyways.... What's the beef with the ISA
He has no quota to use up
Are you allowed one when you're on a low income though?
I think so.
That is probably beneficial to the British economy
Nick earning tax-free interest is not
nick basically bankrupted dubai, you think we'll trust him with an isa?
;)
But you're allowed tax free interest anyways if you have earnings under £7k (in the UK)
It encourages residents to save

Evening folks =)
howdy jim, what's new?
Mr C, I've got a couple pics for you, uploading them now.
ooh yay!
A while back I said I was going to get a Sidepodcast decal made for my car, well it came in a little while ago =)

And as of last weekend, my car and I are points leaders for the EP (E Prepared) class for the Washington DC region of Autocross.
Video of last weekends event winning drive:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZM5yZxZUOM
Figured since Christian Horner was taking shots at EJ and his soggy shirt, I'd get my hits in.
heheheheheh!!!
i.love.that!
Yea, I've had several people come up and comment about it to me, laughing about how sweaty EJ was that weekend.
ooooooooooooooooh.
wow.
christ that's so awesome
he is internationally renowned for being sweaty. what a guy :)
His sweating is much more epic than his poor F1 team was =)
Ah thanks. Next month is the Pro event, where I'll be going up against actual professional drivers here in the states. I'm just hoping to lay down times somewhat close to them.
i'm embedding the video. it's too good to miss.
Thanks =)
Yep, if all goes well, the "sidepodcast" car may be a champion at seasons end. Just trying to do my part to get you folks some exposure.
tis v.v.v. much apprecaited!
I also have a decal coming in for my helmet but I'm not sure how its going to turn out.
I always enjoy your videos Jim.
Anyway time for bed.
Night all
Night Steven, and thanks =)
agreed. we demand guest posts :)
night sir.
Sounds good. I'll make one after the Northeastern Divisional Championship at the end of the month. Some say I'm favorite to take the title for my class but I'm no terribly sure, so we'll see what happens. Hopefully I can find some Kimi Raikkonen'esque sisu as my opponent is very very fast.
I also need to get some new qualifying tires. Probably going to order them this weekend if all goes well.
yikes, how much will they set you back?
800 american dollars or so. Depending on what fitment I want. They're very expensive and only good for 100 or so runs.
I have two sets right now, but they're not fresh, so I'll put in an order to get some new ones, especially for the competition.
seems like a plan, but that's one pricey past time you have right there!
Ugh, you're telling me. I have probably 20,000 american dollars invested in the car/tires. Going to be more next season, as I'm contacting out a new race motor to be built. Already began talks with an engineer about the specifications.
do you mean a custom car or a custom engine?
Just about everything on the car is custom. I built or contracted out the building of everything from suspension to the fuel injection system.
Even the stickers are custom =)
hehehehe!
Btw, on an F1 related issue, has Virgin been granted clearance to change it's fuel tank size? I've been super busy recently with my own racing season that I've not been able to keep up during the break between china and spain.
they have clearance, but not the time. only glock races with a modified tank on sunday. di grassi presumably will get an upgraded car by monaco.
That's good that they got clearance. I'd have been quite disgusted if they didn't, as Ferrari gets clearance to fix it's motors.
we're all a bit clueless as to why ferrari have suddenly got that permission.
seems fishy to me.
Todt, I assume.
I agree that it's fishy, and I'm a massive Ferrari fan.
renault have twice had dispensation to make changes, but i think that has been pre-season. mid season doesn't seem fair, especially as the homolgated engine was just fine last year.
That and Renault got stiffed last year and were stuck with ticking timebombs for motors. They didn't need any more bad press, especially with Piquet's crash exposed. That also cost Vettel a title shot.
also true

Night Bro =)
Morning Sidepodders ;)
Morning all. Thursday again.
I refuse to believe it's Thursday as it's only my second working day of the week. That's my story and I'm sticking to it ;)
I feel strangely positive about today.
I will go with it being Tuesday.
Button goes back to school
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sarahholt/2010/05/button_goes_back_to_school.html
I think this has to be my favourite picture of the article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sarahholt/button_bbc_595.jpg
Aww, bless him. I like the shiny car behind his head.
Going anywhere near any of my old schools is my idea of hell on earth, so I think he is very brave.
Luckily that's not really an option for me :)
Faced with a choice of going back or leaving the country, I'd be finding my passport :)
one of my friends now teaches at our old high school. I would find that super, super odd. If not just because suddenly you have to call all your old teachers by their first names.
Two of my teachers passed away, one was fired in disgrace, one went back to uni to learn more and one quit because the job took too much out of him...
one of mine was this guy
Tennis ball man? What was he like?
I never had a problem with him, but he only taught me for 3 weeks :D Oddly enough, he was the German teacher. You wouldn't take him for a man fluent in German.
I always thought that whole affair was overblown myself.
my brother who is older than me knew most of the people who came out in the media and made complaints about him, they were all the wag-as-many-classes always-in-detention folk back in the day, none of them were the sort he'd recommend taking seriously.
In other words 'get back at the teacher'. How sad of them :(
My F1 Racing arrived today, I was pleased to see they didn't censor Murray's column about how shocking Aus TV coverage is :D
He must have noticed that our results graphic includes someone by the name of "Kazuki Kobayashi":D
Morning all.
So... he failed his exams and the schools are inviting him in to show off his success story as one of their products? I thought schools were supposed to promote studying not hooning around on racetracks. :)
Me too, now. Oddly enough I applied for an IT job at mine a few years ago, they said they'd help train the applicant. After the interview I'm glad I didn't get it, very weird being back.
Oddly enough, you could argue that's what I did ... twice :D
I opted for that passport idea, literally :-)
hello everybody, after my 3 weeks away from F1 and everything not work related
Hello Mr Wolf.
Glad to have you back, hope it all got sorted!
Hello all - rant of the day.
I just tried to log in to my bank website on Chrome and got an error message.
I telephoned their internet banking line (which I paid for) and pressed all of the relevant buttons, spoke to someone, was put on hold, spoke to someone else. I was then told that they only support IE and Firefox.:(
I have sent in my feedback on their complaint form. I understand that there must be costs involved supporting all browsers but if you can't be bothered to do that, at least have the decency to put this information on the page where customers login. The customer would then have a fighting chance of being able to access their information without wasting their money and the customer service desk's time.
Rant over... and relax :)
Hello
This is about 3 miles from where I live.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/dorset/8661477.stm
It is busy but not that bad..
yes, work done, the guy who landed in China jail is also out after 8 days behind bars, and I can now look forward to GP :-)
An interesting way to protest.
What it doesn't say is the crossing was only installed a month ago after years of lobbying the council/highways agency
I think I said this yesterday but yay for Claire (again): http://twitpic.com/1lh1pm
Hello, folks. How's everyone? :)
Ah I've missed the motorhomes, that's how a paddock should look :)
Hi. Good. Slow day here. Works for me.
getting back to normal, slowly :-)
And another view: http://twitpic.com/1lh22z
I'm quite excited to finally see a motorhomey paddock at Spa, it's so foreign to me as a flyaway queen!
Same here. Last few weeks have been manic for me. Good thing we're in for a back-to-back. :)
you are the flyaway queen, young and sweet... :D
I get ridiculously overexcited to see their trucks. I hope we see some on the road, I expect we'll be too late though.
I have the same problem. My bank only supports IE8 (or whatever the latest version is called).
It's the only site we use it for!
China Jail? Dare I ask?
oh that's good!
It is, but ironically he is contributing to the very things he is trying to eradicate (traffic and pollution)...
Actually I'm quite excited because this is the first time we see the new teams' trucks and their liveries too. Do HRT even have trucks? :)
Mr Gascoyne says: New transporters looking good in the paddock. New motorhome arrives for Valencia so using a temporary one at the moment
and Virgin tweeter: Full tweeting service from Barcelona paddock starts tomorrow before FP1. New trucks and motorhome - Excited :-)
We are not alone with our enthusiasm for motorhomes then :)
It's quite amazing how happy everyone is to return to European races.
:) :)
I think the paddock have had enough of travelling after the post-China adventure. They probably are even without that..
The only voting we can talk about today: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/05/06/life-in-the-fast-lane-ii-part-6/
:)
Vote registered ;)
I hope nobody spoils their ballot ;)
Can I mention Google UK changing the letter L?
http://www.google.co.uk/
long story cut short - a silly man (with shooting as hobby) traveled the world with three forgotten bullets in his jacket (in his check-in luggage). security at several airports in the developed world missed the, the security at the airport in China found them.
Oh dear!
Thursday before the GP and there's hardly any F1 news.
This has to have been the longest 3-week gap ever!
afternoon aeveryone
Another post: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/05/06/the-amazing-a-z-adventure-introduction/
Oh good - just when I needed a distraction ;)
All I've seen is about Derek Warwick being a steward.
That might be interesting...
aye - saw that yesterday
good choice
Finally, I am getting back into my usual routines and catching up with Sidepodcast having had an extended 3 week holiday in Egypt thanks to a wonderful volcano in Iceland and then last week having to go from 1 all day meeting to the next, (I had over 2300 emails in my inbox). At some point I will have to post on here a picture of the stretched limo Chrysler 300C that had a Rolls Royce badge on the grill that I took a picture of whilst in Egypt.
I forgot to do the voicemail. Oops.
3 weeks! What was it supposed to be?
More to the point, was it nice to be stuck there for that long?
It was meant to be 2 weeks, but our stay was extended by exactly 1 week. We got moved to a 4 star full inclusive hotel for the extra week so apart from not costing anything as we were moved to a new hotel it was almost like having a second holiday. I am going to Portugal for a week in August I wonder what the chances are of the volcano extending that holiday as well?
I will only allow this if it is at the start of August :D
Keeping a quiet eye on the James Allen tweet thing. Saw this from Maurice Hamilton:
Not all latest motor homes in the paddock. Monaco in 1 week means Red Bull and Mercedes have sent theirs there. Lunch good at Lotus tho.
Maurice is in the paddock? Who is he working for then?
he's back in the commentry box with croftie for a FP session i think, while Di Resta is in the car..
#nothere
The caption for this link reads:
Anyone else thinking of Abbott and Costello? Anyone? No? Just me then.
Oh cool - glad to have him back...
Shiny phone isn't coming today :(
Afternoon all. Formula Santander is being officially launched today and at some point it will have the full-length Martin Brundle video of Silverstone (as opposed to the 'teaser' that's been doing the rounds).
In other news, been given a possible date of August 31 for a go in the two-seater...
yay!
although, that's ages away :(
August is only 3 months away! I remember when it was 11 months away! #holidaycomingaroundtoofast
Ah good, at least it'll be warm and sunny then... hopefully...
Is that all? I'm not ready.
I think I need to start working 14 hours a day 6 days a week to have any chance of having enough money.
Howdy all, have we seen this?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83340
New funky engine cover!
have we discussed schumi
cheatingshaking down a revised roll hoop / engine cover last week?http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83340
slash/ monocoque
jinx!
booo
If my company had overtime or extra hours I'd consider taking them...
in all seriousness though, thats not just a different engine cover, its a different monocoque top, clearly trying to go radical
Is that like slash fiction?
I've been doing 4 hours each non-race Saturday, although I'm doing 4 hours this Saturday as well to make up for not doing any while my parents were here. I just can't mentally force myself to give up my whole day though, but an 8 hour shift would certainly help the bank account!
looks very different. but then their last one was quite radical and clearly didn't work either
G'n'R Slash?
i was going to do an actual slash but then realised that doohickey may think it was code and take it away.
I used to be called Slasho because I once introduced myself as Jon/o (being called different names by different people i decided to give this person the choice..)

Ooh, actual drivers look: http://twitpic.com/1liuv0
Well I'm going to go iRacing tonight but it certainly means more blogging in future ;)
could jarno make any less effort, really?
must be dress down thursday
He looks very green.
the other guys have lotus issue footwear, but not trulli?
I don't think Heikki does either.
Worrying about Monaco already: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83341
HRT's Bruno Senna, whose car will be one of the slowest in the field, has revealed that he plans to speak to FIA race director Charlie Whiting in Friday's drivers' briefing in Spain to put forward the idea of splitting the field up.
That would entail removing the frontrunners - who are all but guaranteed getting through Q1 – from the session entirely to minimise the possibility of a big name getting caught out or an accident taking place.
Hello folks.
But then how does one define a frontrunner? And would the potential "non-frontrunner" teams (like, say, Sauber or Williams) agree to the frontrunners getting a free Q2 ticket?
He can qualify with the GP2 field if he likes
wouldn't it make just as much sense to remove the backmarkers? given they are the problem
:)
The BBC is here. They didn't know the difference between lava and magma and they broke 2 cups. Lovely accents though. :D
Have to go before they break anything more
heheheh!
:D
true, but i'm not sure that helps their overall chances of survival in the sport. i would think they, like other teams, also use monaco to court new sponsors.
which is really what this is about. get rid of the big names, more camera time for the newbies
Trulli is on good form today: Split it any way you want, it's not up to me, but if the teams can agree, let's agree.
One day he will just say: leave.me.alone.
:) :)
but there is legitimate concern about 24 cars all taking to the track at the same time. that didn't happen in the 12-laps-60-minutes scheme, because the backmarkers always did their laps at the start and usually stayed in their garages when everyone else went out at the end.
:D
Heh heh. Trouble is, he can be quite feisty when he gets a bee in his bonnet about GPDA matters, track safety, driving etiquette, etc, so he's always one of the first ports of call when scribblers want an appropriately spicy quote. So it's always amusing when he spots 'em coming a mile off and doesn't play ball...
and what happens in valencia, same thing?
Valencia is a long track, no probs
an accident will still screw up laps though? i guess it's a wider track
Yeah but that's street racing for you. Monaco is different because it is short and narrow.
and if qually is wet? you just give 6 cars a free pass?
it's a daft idea, i'm with trulli
he hasn't really stated his opinion, though. he's fine either way, but i'd think he has a preference...
that said, wet quali also increases the chances of an accident.
But that is true everywhere, isn't it?
I don't see how you can just change the rules for one venue. If Monaco is dangerous, then they shouldn't be going there. If having 26 cars is dangerous, then they shouldn't be doing that either.
oh yeah. in that case, i'm on my own :)
agreed and agreed.
if the cars are slow enough to be dangerous in qually, they're slow enough to be a danger in the race.
I wasn't defending anything. It is a stupid idea.
ahh good. in that case, i'm with pat :)
believe it or not, there was a time when monaco had its own rules due to the nature of the track. back in the 70s, even where there were 24 entrants, only 20 were allowed to race. i don't think the backmarkers would like that rule to come back, though...
i can believe it, but surely we're more sensible than that now?
you can't go making up rules about individual races any more. doing so is an admission you have no idea how to organise a professional world championship.
IndyCar splits its field in half randomly and has two Q1s before the top six in each merge in Q2. I don't like that either but it is better than arbitrarily choosing who you think is fastest to skip it.
hometime nearly, wondering if i can get away with a sleep after voting, and if it'll help me stay up to watch the result..
i wouldn't mind if f1 did that at every race. but it's nonsense to introduce it for a single event, just because somebody can't get their pace together.
oh and Renault World series had an A and B field split by car number I think, odds in one and evens in the other. not sure if they do now
agred
e
Yep they still do - at least, it's definitely split for Monaco
TBH, i'm ok with it either way. let's just hope nothing bad comes out of whatever the decision is.
It's like it's lost... :D
I’ve been reading through the Mercedes GP press release concerning the partnership with Autonomy in an effort to work out what Autonomy actually does. It’s like trying to swallow a frog.
“Autonomy's software powers the full spectrum of mission-critical applications including pan-enterprise search, customer interaction solutions, information governance, end-to-end eDiscovery, records management, archiving, business process management, web content management, web optimization, rich media management and video and audio analysis.”
¿Que?

That looks positively hazardous compared to my constituency (Bolsover), which has a rating of 0.006. Only 12 seats are considered safer. Admittedly this is because its incumbent is Dennis Skinner and he's been continuously in power there for 40 years. Oh, and he's standing again today.
life just gets weirder. now ferrari care what people think?

Ferrari have evidently decided that the value of its advertising is lost due to this bit of bad PR. Given that an implied advert only has a limited value in the first place, this probably doesn't say much about how bad the PR was.

are they going to use it to show people what smoke/ steam looks like? :)
agreed.
woooaaahh... that's different... not odd, just different..

I'd be quite happy to go and visit any of my old schools except the secondary one (which would still leave me with a fairly lengthy tour). For one thing, it had too many bullies. For another, I'd be worried that the visit would be turned into a political correctness exercise designed to make the school look much better than it was.

i can find nothing... i can tell i'm going to be disappointed by what obviously is just something small like a photo of Jenson and Lewis or something...
i forgot to look, but if you can't find it, no-one can :)
i can't see any shots of the inside of the mclaren pits or hospitality... something inside me secretly hopes they are changing their 'victory' colour... :)
i am quite the fan of mercedes' new glass house: http://motorsport.com/photos/f1/2010/spa/f1-2010-spa-xp-0013.jpg
evening all
just in the door - how goes it?
:)
ooooo!!!
do you know what else i like about it, other than the general nice design?... it isn't the old Brawn/Honda one repainted :D *phew*
also true. no earth dreams to be found there
sir
They could probably grow 'matoes in there.
ooh, bet it's very eco too
i'm so pleased :D hehe
:) i wonder if it's their latest attempt to get schumi to eat their food rather than ferrari's? fresh veg?
HRT's Bruno Senna, whose car will be one of the slowest in the field, has revealed that he plans to speak to FIA race director Charlie Whiting in Friday's drivers' briefing in Spain to put forward the idea of splitting the field up. {Comment #205}
I like that idea. Give the six lowest teams in the championship 10 minutes to do their "Q1", then the other six teams a 10-minute "Q1" session, with the slowest seven times being the ones removed from the reckoning. Nobody gets baulked at this particularly crucial moment (something that's generally a much bigger problem in qualifying than the race) and everyone has a chance to show what they can do without being in a massive queue.
Also, temptations to park at Rasscasse fade because you can't block the whole field in one go...
Wow... I never get addressed like that by real people (unless the police are involved). It's like I'm in a fancy restaurant.
:o
! :) !
So young man, what kind of food do you have here?
cupcake?
Is that a type of caviar?
in my head it is. yes.
can i offer you a drink? we have red bull.
Is that some kind of lemonade? If so, pour it into a cereal bowl with the caviar and give me a fork!
Goooooooood evening sidepodland!
can i have some?? i neeeed caffeine today :)
hello
only if you have it with caviar

You crazy, crazy people.

he's a lovely lad, but i do believe he smells faintly of cabbage
:D
:D
what?
opens late, stays open later, makes no profit ever?
Is this the same Ferrari that traditionally sticks to their guns and doesn't roll over?
you forgot the redbull muffin ;)
i'm disappointed 'box of wine' or rose didn't make that list...
i've drunk it all
ughhhh...
see what happens when real F1 news goes quiet
you can't go making up rules about individual races any more. doing so is an admission you have no idea how to organise a professional world championship. {Comment #231}
Having slightly different rules according to differences in the setting is more or less essential to have a professional world championship - at least if it's something that's more affected by environment than snooker or darts. World swimming galas have different numbers of lanes according to the width of the pool, several world sports may choose to use roofs or not depending on prevailing conditions and a world motor sport championship must also respect the situations and places in which it finds itself. Otherwise it courts disaster.
maybe that's what i'm smelling
:) :) :)
Many of us need tea in order to function.
in all fairness they used to run monaco with less cars purely because it was so tight and twisty. monaco has always been the exception
is that drunk it all or spilled it over the till/mac :P
one glass!
@D
*:D
Cupcakes at 2am sounds ideal
oh and for anyone who missed my photo plug yesterday, some pics taken on monday - http://www.flickr.com/photos/loujohnson/sets/72157623875863727/

This tweet says it is the Mercedes DTM unit, the F1 motorhome is on the way to Monaco.

oh what? boooo!
I was just about to complain about them spending lots of money on a new one when they are all complaining about spending lots of money :)
oh goodness there is a chance it's the painted brawn motorhome then.. boo
...and then for some reason, this was making the rounds in work today (no idea why)

Women's available in June.
i'm a busy man learning about... stuff
corrected for you :P
learning about caviar and red bull apparently
oops. too predictable, clearly
The FIA has a motorhome now?

#motorhomewatch
That had that last year, I remember seeing it at Monaco
Evening all
did they have four trucks though? i only remember two
Possibly not that many nope. Perhaps Jean wanted to bring many many clothes along with him, he seems the fashionable type
ooo i just found out i get free internet on my phone from orange now :D just need a phone that likes the internet to take advantage of this :)
ah ok
How? I'm on Orange..
I was abotu to say, free dial up speed is a given these days surely :P
my phone makes phone calls (sometimes)
Read and voted on Christine's latest chapter. Sneaky little poser at the end. I like it.
http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/05/06/life-in-the-fast-lane-ii-part-6/
dolphin plans now have free internet... dad rang to see if my plan was the best for me.. and as i'm on dolphin and have been using the internet a bit recently they changed my plan slightly, so as of next month not only do i get free texts, but free internet. My minutes have gone down a bit, but i don't often call people so i don't mind.
They do? I'm on the lowest Dolphin... I shall expect something telling me I have free internet soon then :)
I must find out which plan I am on. You would think remembering animals would be easy
Hello all, well that was interesting. Just had a chap from the Food Standards Agency round doing a survey. Apparently, I know loads about how to eat healthily.
Unfortunately I'm too lazy and like chocolate & alcohol too much for this to make any difference :). Not bad for a £10.00 shopping voucher.
Nice of the FSA to go round giving people vouchers for chocolate and booze.
I think this is everyone's problem isn't it? I rarely meet people who genuinely don't know what's good for them and what isn't. It's just that you opt out.
Evening all
They need to make cauliflour taste like chocolate.
Evening. Do you know when your shiny new phone will arrive?
Ooooh and having told Nick I wouldn't go to Australia, I have email about new Emirates promotional rates.... If I save really hard maybe I can have happy holiday times after all :D :D :D
When do you need to sign up?
By 1st of June to fly by the 30th but I can probably work around that. £650!!!!! :D :D :D
Someone probably overed this already. Ferrari have removed the barcode but for some reason feel the need to leave a white outline. Apparently they think it is wrong that people are saying the barcode is a tobacco ad when America is trying to set up a fairer health system. Not quite sure what the connection is.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83346
Is Australia ready for you and Nick?
That looks ridiculous...
The ony reason I can see for the outline is to remind people about the Marlboro ad that used to be there
Hehehe
http://www.store-orange.co.uk/dolphin-tariff.html?id=011210000029&br=1&gclid=CNT51reUvqECFQIslAodbHISAg
Was it actually a Marlboro ad? I thought people were losing their marbles.
*waves*
PING ->> http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2010/05/06/2010-spanish-grand-prix-barcelona-round-5-may-7th-9th/
Back to business folks.
As with every race, I'll be updating this as the weekend goes on. May it please be better than in recent years...
The barcode was there in place of the advert. Funnily enough the Ducati motorbike team which has a similar Marlboro deal on a similarly coloured bike have the same barcode.
So? Anything that goes anywhere on a car is in place of an old advert... The objections seem to have passed me by.
the objectors are mentalist do-gooders, desperate to make a name for themselves in medical circles. quite why ferrari have capitulated is beyond me.
I have a feeling Ferrari felt a bit stupid saying the barcode was a part of Ferrari's identity, even though it's also on the Ducati bikes which obviously have nothing to do with Ferrari but have a Marlboro deal as Steven says. Hence it suddenly disappearing.
Just my two cents anyways.
I'm surprised they gave in, very surprised. I demand more arrogant snobby horse whisperer posts
absolutely. i can only assume the advertising deal is coming to an end anyhow, and the doctors make for great scape goats?
Why have a barcode? It is not exactly a design feature. It is only there for one reaseon and the same with the outline they have now. Teams don't normally put things like that on their car for no reason.
Ta. Need to be on a specific package then. Wonder if I can get it without the free phone.
THe Marlboro deal ends either this season or next season. The team is still called Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro which seems odd.
finishes at the end of 2011
To get around the Marlboro stuff they should have put a big smily face of Rob Smedley on the side of the car with the caption Moral Rob.
Everytime Ferrari do something wrong then Rob can tell the morals learnt from their bad decisions.
hmm, bit early for that then. they must be after something, i refuse to believe they're just nice people.
:D
:D
Ha :) :)
you'd better take that back!!
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01238/Stefano-Domenicali_1238766c.jpg
Photoshop. It has to be done
Ferrari - nice people. No chance
It just happened to be open already
Is there a better picture though around anywhere than the Autosport little piccie of the Marlboxo?
i take that back :)
In Marlboro typeface if poss
any ferrari rear will do though, no?
oooooooh! i KNOW this one.
it's neo contact.
:)
:D
#perfectionist ;)
Awesome mr c is awesome
all that typeface learning has paid off then...
Your week of learning was well spent.
Don't encourage him.
no, i mean, you're removing the barcode, so any ferrari must be game?
w00t!
oh
damn fine waiter too!!
Oooh, I getcha. yeah, that makes more sense than my silly idea.
Sorry :)
Although that was well helpful coz' I had no idea.

i might've just bought an itouch app where you have to guess fonts by looking at them.

i'm not very good at it though
menu's are a problem
I would just about get it if it was free but they got you to pay for it!
If this is more interesting than F1 at the moment, something is seriously wrong.
I can imagine. Can I have the fish in Helvetica please?
What?! you have to pay to get the neo contact font?!
:D hehe
of course. you have to pay for almost all fonts, it's just that you pay for some of them when you buy your windows licence and some more when you buy your photoshop licence etc.
59p though. that's like not even proper money.
ummm, it kinda is but i'm sure it's just a phase i'm going through. i'll grow out of it soon enough.
I'm going to get people to start charging for my handwriting then *mumbles to self annoyingly*
*prays*
sorry luke :(
part of me assumed you'd blagged all the font disks from uni anyhow. isn't that the whole point of going?
sssh. It will be religion next
our uni gives us nothing :( not even the programs we need for the assignments/study
you're so supportive :(
In a hugely odd coincedence, my brother has the font.
#woah
HA.
There are some evenings when eating your dinner whilst reading the comments is a definite choking hazard
damn. normally people leave with armfulls of dvd's full of clip art, stock photography, audio loops and typefaces. completely illegal, but almost a given.

Le Man series race at Spa this weekend. Peugeot and Audi have three cars each racing as a Le Mans rehearsal. I guess Franck should be racing then.
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/04052010/58/full-entry-spa-endurance-race.html
I think I read somewhere that he is.
Yup he's in the #2 car with Sarrazin and Minassian. http://www.lemans-series.com/en/s52_circuits/s52p06_engages.php?circuit=4
oooh yikes. redesign: http://www2.mercedes-gp.com/en/

So we have a busy Sunday then.
Fisi and Alesi are again in this one as well
and Ant... Ant is there too right??
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q127/Lukehmuse/moralrob.jpg
It goes well.
So both Audi and Peugeot are running their full Le Mans line up. Should make it interesting
it's a winner!
I thought it was going to be the extended Schumacher car
Yes, he's with Gene and Wurz in the #1. The other car is Lamy/Bourdais/Pagenaud.
With Wurz and Gene in #1
Nice :)
Tweet it to InsideFerrari ;)
I assume Rob Bell is there as well?
I can see a series of stories based on Moral Rob
Yup

Brilliant.
Just read that Ferrari has opted to remove the barcode from its' livery. I have one word for them.....Gutless
Wait - there's an election today?!
:) You have 30 minutes. Assuming you're registered.
yup, we've just elected rob smedley as the moral voice of f1.
Sadly, Harry Redknapp didn't appear to be on the election forms.
#footballrelatedjoke
Don't forget to vote ;)
All done - sorry last comment was tongue in cheek. Just trying out Sky News HD - they were just down the road in Exeter and Torbay. Bizarrely, the Exeter vote counters get sweets!

Aha another South West Sidepodder :)
oooohhhh mmyyyyy goddddd!!!!! my dad just insisting on printing a 45 page email/document ..... gggaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!
No laser?
Am wrestling with a satellite dish, indoors, trying to stop Outnumbered breaking up. Still funny! :D
laser?
Fabulous program
It so is.
Laser printer. Way faster than inkjet
could the problem be that they're generally installed outside?
if we could afford one that would be great. it's the waste of paper and my precious ink that gets me.
I now have the dish balanced precariously on a chair with boxes, placed towards the window, trying desperately to concentrate. Took me ages to find the signal!
Ask if your school is replacing one of their printers. My brother got his out of a school skip.
Tell him to get his own printer
ergh! i'm not using one of those.. they suck... plus they only do black and white.. and are ancient.
They are nowhere near as expensive as you think
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-ml-1640-monochrome-laser-printer-00854205-pdt.html
Laser printers are perfect for printing 45 page emails though.
Personally I'd forget home printing of photographs and use a professional printing service instead. It can work out a lot cheaper :)
seconded.
Oh and good evening everyone. Today is another Star Wars related day - Revenge of the 6th.
you can't get away with that, it happens every month :)
but with professional printing services you are rather limited with sizes... we don't need a printer, we just need to get my dad to stop printing emails :D
Has he heard of this thing called "reading on screen"?
Wha..?
The FIA is to be asked to consider introducing a one-off split qualifying session for next weekend's Monaco Grand Prix because of fears about traffic problems at the street event.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83341
at the moment you have the worst of all worlds.
- your dad is clearly mad
- you have an inkjet printer, which is expensive
- you have a colour inkjet printer, which is insanely expensive
your dad needs a laser printer (because that's easier than changer your dad), and you need to try it :)
I think for a 45 page document printing it makes sense but not for normal e-mails
blame senna
I sense a birthday present coming on.... :D
Which one?
BRUNO!! *shakes fist*
Load of nonsense. Absolutley no need for it.
Love it. :D
Hahaha, watching Election 2010, Jeremy Vine reckons Waveney is the most difficult seat to win. *hearts*
He can get a colour laser printer for about £100
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-clp315-colour-laser-printer-00852633-pdt.html
And so, the public vote has closed. It's time to play Who Wants to be a Prime Minister!
There are some shocking puns in tomorrow's daily. I apologise in advance.
You should never apologise for shocking puns. Alex is on holiday this weekend so someone has to pun
I should add, Waveney is my home area. ROCK ON LOWESTOFT!!! :D
Always check the running costs though.
No politics please, people.
You know what the problem with elections is?
You always end up with a Government.
Absolutely but if he is printing out 45 page e-mails on an inkjet it is not going to take long for any laser to be cheaper
Steven:
You make it sound like Alex's motto is:
"Have pun, will travel".....
I think he has a few mottos and that is definitely one of them
Sorry. Not allowed to big up my town? Can I big up Rockall instead?
So has everyone here made their chances to their seats, yet? I do not mean the British Election, I mean your Fantasy F1 teams?....
I am going to wait until I have seen some practise before I forget to make changes
Just found this great quote.
I've given up on it. I'm doing worse this year than I've done before. I'm miles behind Mr C its just scary.
:D
:D
That's about as bad as me advising my "dippy" female friend to drill a hole in the bottom of her boat at the bow so that the leaking water could drain out....

NASA has completed its flight readiness review and everything is set for the launch on 14th May at 2pm Eastern/7pm UK.
In shock NASA news the last two shuttle flights will now go in numerical order. We may even get an additional flight to ship a load of supplies to the ISS after the last scheduled mission.
Please tell me she did. Unfortunately that's selective breeding.
Sadly, her elder sister did not share my interest in "discovering" a virgin wreck dive site.......
Shame....
Right, have to head to bed. Mate's persuaded me it's a good idea to run at 6am. Night everyone, and remember: vote Sidepodcast!!! :D
Night. I remember when I used to run at that time of day. Would never do it now
Evening everyone.
Had to turn off twitter because of too much election stuff on it.Now I know the annoyance everyone in the world feels when everyone overblows our (U.S.) elections.
#SorryWorld
Either that or stoke the flames.
spc is an election free zone :)
how's tricks sir?
I vote for sleep ;)
Good night!
so soon? :(
night chap
I make no apology for flooding one of my feeds with it. Our most important day in 13 years.
Thank (sidepod)god.
I'm still trying to mast the rabbit out of the hat thing but I am getting the hang of finding the random card in the deck thing.
See ya
Hi Dan / Night Gavin
ha!
Speaking of tricks, how about that "trick" inlet that Brawn designed. Cheeky. I don't know how the air flow works with that thing, I could see it causing more problems then it solves.
the roll hoop? it's certainly a break from the norm.
What#s he done? I haven't seen about it
Here you go.
Blimey!
The back of the Mercedes looks even wierder now :)
I have no idea why he has done that
This is me the amateur aerodynamicist talking here, but on fast corners, I could see a problem with air flow disruptions from wind buffering causing a break up in the air flow. How did they solve that?
They look lower than normal so that should mean more interference from the driver's head
schumi did a secret test last week, so i guess all is okay?
Better view.
A straight line test?
i see ferrari have solved the problem of having too many drivers at last:
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13250084
no. round and round rockingham.
Oh my goodness
How is that allowed?
also, force india put their motorhome together all wrong:
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13250059
Ferrari minivan?
Why haven't they thought of THAT before?
no one is quite sure. it may have been speed limited, but it's called a promotional filming day. normally they happen before the season though.
I'm not sure which way to angle my head
It must be set up for a quick breakdown in case those coach bill collectors come back.
Another view of the force india motorhome
!!! :)
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13250076
hehehehe old school photography!! :D
Lotus motorhome is soooo cute
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13250051
Reminds me of an old art school job. I love the painting or sculpture done by Dali and Picasso, but I wouldn't step foot in a building designed by them.
That's nothing. I want to see a 11 x 14 on a wooden rail with glass plates and a giant pan full of magnesium flash powder.
I worked in the Ukraine just after the end of communism and the photo for my security pass was taken on a camera way older than the one in the picture. The photographer lined it up and removed the lens cap for 3 seconds to take the photo. The quality was really good considering.
It's surprising what some of those old cameras can do. I did my entire Bachelors of Fine Arts project with a Seneca Falls box camera from 1873 that my grandfather had lying around the house. The quality was rather amazing.
I felt I sold out a bit when I upgraded to a SpeedGraflex from the late 1940's. Then I upgraded to an FM2, then finally to a digital.
I love the ease of digital, but I really, really, really miss working with film.
How do you get film for something that age?
The camera took old 3 3/4 x 4 1/2 tin-type film. Basically, it was a plate of tin covered in the silver gelatin.
What I did was take a bit of wood and velvet padding to the box camera till it fit a standard, modern 4x5 film back. The image was a bit off (fuzzy and dark on the bottom of the photos) but it worked great.
I tried making my own tin film but that turned out to be a disaster.
Is Thursday nearly over? Thursdays suck.
Sounds like a lot of work but I guess it was worth it if you got the results you wanted.
Very nearly
Let's just say plate of tin with sharp corners + photographic fixer bath + dark room + non protected hand = disaster and a lot of pain.
I know the feeling of handling chemicals with cuts in your hand.
Almost there. You only have a few minutes...
how is it midnight already?!
That one of my complaints of photography today. There is no danger. No excitement. No need for a gas mask while you are processing a sepia tone print. The thing has gotten soft. Sort of like F1. ;)
See women are confusing. Alison is asking how it is not midnight and you are asking how it is.
:D
On the plus side, we have so many more photos of cats playing pianos and the like.
I've had a really horrible day.
What's did Nick do?
wow!!!!!
i haven't been able to develop any films for a few years and i really miss the working with SLR cameras and developing it myself. The smell of a dark room is one of my favourite smells ever! Can't wait to have a go again next year :)
i've been sewing f1 cars alllllll day.... i look up and suddenly it's midnight, i thought it was 10pm, it was a bit of a shock. productive day though.
awww no! *hugs for alison*
I thought you had finished that piece
i finished the final piece (in my exam) but we have till monday to finish our sketch books, so am just finishing up bits and bobs trying to make sure i secure the grade i need.
A pass. I always liked to secure a pass.
Good luck with that
hehehe my exam book needs to be a high A to make sure i have a good chance at getting the A i need for uni.. :)
thank you?..
Best of luck. Sounds like you are putting in the work.
thanks, i'm enjoying it actually :) much better than boring non f1 related textiles ;)
