It is a new week and finally, we are going to get some action. F1 resumes with the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, and even though we know it is probably going to be boring, to me it is better than nothing. Also, watch out for Rally New Zealand, which Lady Snowcat will most probably provide snippets and highlights of. Onto more pressing things:

  • Firstly, motorsports. Pat W has managed to catch GT1 at Silverstone and is kind enough to share videos of his experience.
  • Christine has been working hard with a new week of rankings, a new chapter on Mitch and company, a new film review, and a new header.
  • Joe Saward is genius, as usual.
  • Apple has managed to sell 1,000,000 iPads without needing to reach out to us here at SPC.
  • Moving house sounds like a fantastic idea.
  • I've found a new activity helpful for Lukeh and all those of us who have become disillusioned by F1. Lou has provided a guide too.
  • I am plugging my own blog again. I have been working on something for F1 lately, so you might catch a ping or two in the comments later.
  • Please do get a copy of 'Senna Versus Prost' or read it at a nearby library or book store or whatever. It is really really good.

Finally, once again the appeal goes out to all lurkers to de-lurk. We didn't have anyone yesterday so please don't let us down two days in a row.

I think so long as you are open and offer people access to the detail then there is nothing wrong with winning it yourself. It's not like you are charging people to play.

More an exclamation than a query. After the Indycar, I just thought the rest of us were out of it. I was amazed he was unlucky enough to not win from that position.

    Hi guys,

I haven't been around the comments much lately, but am trying to work from home at the moment, so naturally I'm procrastinating and have ended up in the comments!

I saw the email from Spa yesterday. I'm leaving Melb on July 12 for Europe which will make for a close call :(

I emailed Spa GP today and asked if tix can be delivered to me before start July. Am getting a bit worried...

Alternatively I can try to get my tix re-routed to somewhere in Europe (have cousins in Paris for example), but am worried my tix will get lost.

    Oh do tell ;)

  • Alianora La Canta04/05/2010 at 10:44

    Oh do tell ;)

There were 7 on the list given by NHS Direct, due to my area not having a formal emergency dentist (in case you're wondering, I haven't been able to get registered with a dentist for the last 8 years, the most common reasons being "no space on the register" and "you don't need enough dental work on a consistent basis for us to be able to afford you being on the register"). The replies were as follows:

"Friday if you're NHS or this afternoon if you're willing to go private"

"Maybe Thursday but we're not quite sure yet"

    "Friday"

"Sorry we don't do emergency appointments - why are we even on the NHS Direct list?!?"

    "Saturday"

    "Friday 14th May"

    "8th June"

Personally, I believe that if you have a dental problem that can wait until the 8th June, it does not constitute an emergency...

F1 is very confused at the moment, there will surely be some changes. There will be a push to change things, because the way it is now, I don't see it having a big future

    Or in the original Flavspeak:

"F1 no good. Must change these, else F1 go bye, yes."

I;m ok, a little frustrated at MySQL but that's because we haven't been taught it properly :( silly module...

    what's the frustration?

I have a lot of experience being frustrated with MySQL!

  • Lukeh04/05/2010 at 17:33

    what's the frustration?

General learning of it, we haven't actually been taught how to use it for databases but we have to create a facebook-style website that allows people to sign up and stores details in a database etc.

It's a little frustrating knowing we have to find out how to use the language ourselves rather than have it taught in lectures, which our lecturer has decided is now 'assignment revision time' whatever the hell that means

  • Turkey Machine04/05/2010 at 17:33

Mysql has that habit of being so obvious to program yet so infuriating in its accuracies and stupidness its one of my most hated languages, next to D.

  • jpancoast04/05/2010 at 17:36

Ahh, I see. Once I got used to the concept of SQL and some basic command syntaxes (select, insert, update, etc.) I found it pretty easy.

It can get real complicated, though, since MySQL does soem things different than other db's

I think it's getting used to it all and the fact time that could be spent being taught it properly is being completely wasted when we have had no knowledge of the language with the exception of basic SQL expressions. I'm sure we'll get it though

mysql's pretty straightforward for what you need to do. you basically need a single table with a few fields. php or whatever you're designing the web site in will do all the heavy lifting. right?

It's 14MB/s and it was an N-standard USB key connecting to a G-router. It was great and rrrrubosh at the same time...

Ah, N requires an N router as well as N adapters.

Since you're in Denmark, I am expecting semi-symmetrical speeds over there. ;)

That is a good location to let you get to a few tracks easily.

    Good luck with the interview.

Oh it worked, it was just pants so I moved the modem back!

Since you're in Denmark, I am expecting semi-symmetrical speeds over there. ;)

If that's the case then my whole flat is very Danish!

I am sure the site will start to get lively again once the race weekend starts

this week i have so far spent the best part of 36 hours deliberating over the future typeface of sidepodcast.com

on the one hand, i'm very grateful to have the time to spend on such detail, on the other, this may not be a constructive use of my time!

and even if we do decide to change it, people might complain and then we'll roll it back anyhow :)

yes and no. it's been on my wishlist since xmas, but the more typeface blogs i read the more they tell me to watch it.

so the film doesn't help with the decision, but it's all tied in together. we haven't really done "proper" design on sidepodcast, well ever, so there's lots to learn.

  • me04/05/2010 at 23:04

F1 Ferrari fair. Sorry but I have no idea how to put all off them in the same sentence

hehe. ferrari don't have the engines to finish the year unless the f1 give them some free ones too.

any changes are too little too late for this year

  • lou04/05/2010 at 23:04

    Renault did it too

they are basically saying 'our engine keeps blowing up cause we messed up.. can we fix it so we don't end up getting loads of penalties at the end of the season...'

rrrrruuubbbissshh! i was looking forward to a ferrari starting out of place in every single race of the last half of the season. it is the only way we will get overtaking in abu dhabi!

  • me04/05/2010 at 23:04

rrrrruuubbbissshh! i was looking forward to a ferrari starting out of place in every single race of the last half of the season. it is the only way we will get overtaking in abu dhabi!

just how dramatic is this new typeface going to be?

  • lou04/05/2010 at 23:05

    they still will

    that's alright then :)

  • Steven Roy04/05/2010 at 23:06

rrrrruuubbbissshh! i was looking forward to a ferrari starting out of place in every single race of the last half of the season. it is the only way we will get overtaking in abu dhabi!

Alonso has 5 engines for 15 races so there is a good chance they will still have problems

  • lou04/05/2010 at 23:07

    they still will

i was going to say they should just cope with the rubbish engines just like honda did, then i realised how honda coped with it, and decided it was a bad suggestion.

  • me04/05/2010 at 23:10

just how dramatic is this new typeface going to be?

it's not dramatic, it's barely any different. there's a choice of three and christine has discounted one.

for those interested, they are as follows (mac / windows):

    1) helvetica neue / arial

    2) lucida grande / lucida sans

    3) verdana / tahoma

number one is the current font (as well as the basis for a film), number two is a viable option and number three has been discounted.

they are broadly similar, but the choice effects the rest of the design. the time is also in learning stuff about matching paragraph spacing at various sizes and which, if any of the above fonts works on linux.

in the past, the was just what is was. now i want to make a choice and know why that choice was made.

  • me04/05/2010 at 23:10

Alonso has 5 engines for 15 races so there is a good chance they will still have problems

the article doesn't say if sauber get decent fixes for spain?

    According to http://www.vivaf1.com/reliability.php

Ferrari have had 4 failures (2 Ferrari, 2 Sauber)

    Renault have 1 failure (RBR)

    Mercedes had 1 (Force India)

    Cosworth had 1 (Virgin)

also quite a few were on their 3rd engine in China

They should do because customer engines have to be the same spec as the factory team. Sauber don't have the same problem because they seem to have a bigger air tank.

Ah fair enough :) Just looking now I marginally prefer Verdana over Tahoma because it is a touch bigger. Lucida is quite good. Arial is a bit tedious isn't it? It is effective though I'll give it that

Absolutely. And you can go too far the other way, too 'fancy' so it becomes hard to read that way. Not that those three options are. I'm trying not to be overly critical because I know you said what is there isn't the finished article.

option one is what's on the site now, so if we stick with it, the body typeface seen in TM's article today will be the finished article. so please be critical.

we're almost certainly not going with verdana/tahoma unless you can convince m'lady. i'll twitpic a sample lucida i a sec.

It is bolder, I find the current one isn't quite bold enough and perhaps the new one is too bold. I mean there's a lot more white on what we have now and for me that is worse. That could be the silly lighting I have in here though, it is quite dark and the screen is bright, so I need to see it in office conditions tomorrow as well. :)

to me the current one on the site is what i'd call "bolder", eg. the text is thicker. or do i have that wrong? ludica seems more "spindly" and there's more white-space between the characters

Seems I'm on standard. I thought I'd enabled it some time ago actually, not sure why it changed, maybe when I changed gfx cards

  • me05/05/2010 at 00:12

that's better than pat's was. still a very thin font.

i think we're going to need to buy some machines

  • Steven Roy05/05/2010 at 00:14

So how do I make the font change then?

  • Pat W05/05/2010 at 00:14

I think a lot of people wouldn't know to do that though.

  • Pat W05/05/2010 at 00:15

    This is in XP.

Control Panel / Display / Appearance / Effects and then where it says about smoothing fonts (2nd dropdown) change it from Standard to Cleartype.

  • me05/05/2010 at 00:15

I think a lot of people wouldn't know to do that though.

cleartype is on by default in vista and windows 7. just not in xp.

i think that's why verdana took off, because it just works

    Of course

  • Pat W05/05/2010 at 00:20

Does the browser have much effect on the font appearance?

In IE8 the font looks identical to FF, but the header loses the gradient. But I never use IE, it is just there. I don't have another browser installed to test.

  • me05/05/2010 at 00:22

do you guys have another 10 mins to kill?

okay, the blog page (and only the blog page), has a different typeface: http://sidepodcast.com/blog/

could you tell me what you think pls?

I like the look of it but you're right there is more space in it, perhaps too much. And it could be a touch bigger, not much though.

    Do you want a screenie?

I think it would be interesting to see it a couple of points bigger. It looks good but it is just too small. Maybe increasing the size would affect the appearance. Not sure

When I had a recurring summer job at a typesetters I learned about kerning and the other things you can do to tighten up the text to remove whitespace but that was in Freehand and Photoshop, I don't know that you could do that in HTML.

    i can do:

    - line height

    - text spacing

    - text weight

    but i think that's all

  • me05/05/2010 at 00:42

i think steven's browser might be zoomed out by one notch

Go for it. Worth asking the question.

The other thing I'd add is the headers on the blog page may be a point or two too big for me now, they are bigger than the old version (I kept the old tab open).
