It is a new week and finally, we are going to get some action. F1 resumes with the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, and even though we know it is probably going to be boring, to me it is better than nothing. Also, watch out for Rally New Zealand, which Lady Snowcat will most probably provide snippets and highlights of. Onto more pressing things:
- Firstly, motorsports. Pat W has managed to catch GT1 at Silverstone and is kind enough to share videos of his experience.
- Christine has been working hard with a new week of rankings, a new chapter on Mitch and company, a new film review, and a new header.
- Joe Saward is genius, as usual.
- Apple has managed to sell 1,000,000 iPads without needing to reach out to us here at SPC.
- Moving house sounds like a fantastic idea.
- I've found a new activity helpful for Lukeh and all those of us who have become disillusioned by F1. Lou has provided a guide too.
- I am plugging my own blog again. I have been working on something for F1 lately, so you might catch a ping or two in the comments later.
- Please do get a copy of 'Senna Versus Prost' or read it at a nearby library or book store or whatever. It is really really good.
Finally, once again the appeal goes out to all lurkers to de-lurk. We didn't have anyone yesterday so please don't let us down two days in a row.

I emailed Spa GP today and asked if tix can be delivered to me before start July. Am getting a bit worried...
Alternatively I can try to get my tix re-routed to somewhere in Europe (have cousins in Paris for example), but am worried my tix will get lost.
I'm happy to personally deliver them to you in Europe but my fees would be astronomical :P

I have a lot of experience being frustrated with MySQL!
General learning of it, we haven't actually been taught how to use it for databases but we have to create a facebook-style website that allows people to sign up and stores details in a database etc.
It's a little frustrating knowing we have to find out how to use the language ourselves rather than have it taught in lectures, which our lecturer has decided is now 'assignment revision time' whatever the hell that means
Mysql has that habit of being so obvious to program yet so infuriating in its accuracies and stupidness its one of my most hated languages, next to D.
Ahh, I see. Once I got used to the concept of SQL and some basic command syntaxes (select, insert, update, etc.) I found it pretty easy.
It can get real complicated, though, since MySQL does soem things different than other db's
and I got used to it by using it a lot, really :)
I think it's getting used to it all and the fact time that could be spent being taught it properly is being completely wasted when we have had no knowledge of the language with the exception of basic SQL expressions. I'm sure we'll get it though

That's always the problem with working abroad. You see airport, work and where you live and have to make a special effort to see some of the country.
My problem is more lack of funds. I could make the time, our bosses don't care if we change shifts around to make time to travel as long as somebody comes to work and we are more or less even in the end :)

this week i have so far spent the best part of 36 hours deliberating over the future typeface of sidepodcast.com
on the one hand, i'm very grateful to have the time to spend on such detail, on the other, this may not be a constructive use of my time!
and even if we do decide to change it, people might complain and then we'll roll it back anyhow :)

yes and no. it's been on my wishlist since xmas, but the more typeface blogs i read the more they tell me to watch it.
so the film doesn't help with the decision, but it's all tied in together. we haven't really done "proper" design on sidepodcast, well ever, so there's lots to learn.
hehe. ferrari don't have the engines to finish the year unless the f1 give them some free ones too.
any changes are too little too late for this year
they are basically saying 'our engine keeps blowing up cause we messed up.. can we fix it so we don't end up getting loads of penalties at the end of the season...'

Alonso has 5 engines for 15 races so there is a good chance they will still have problems
i was going to say they should just cope with the rubbish engines just like honda did, then i realised how honda coped with it, and decided it was a bad suggestion.
it's not dramatic, it's barely any different. there's a choice of three and christine has discounted one.
for those interested, they are as follows (mac / windows):
1) helvetica neue / arial
2) lucida grande / lucida sans
3) verdana / tahoma
number one is the current font (as well as the basis for a film), number two is a viable option and number three has been discounted.
they are broadly similar, but the choice effects the rest of the design. the time is also in learning stuff about matching paragraph spacing at various sizes and which, if any of the above fonts works on linux.
in the past, the was just what is was. now i want to make a choice and know why that choice was made.

wow, you have thought more about typefaces than I ever have. Personally out of Arial and Lucida Sans, I prefer Lucida Sans... but I couldn't for the life of my tell you why.

They should do because customer engines have to be the same spec as the factory team. Sauber don't have the same problem because they seem to have a bigger air tank.

Why not Verdana on both? I've got that on Windows.. though Tahoma is more tightly packed or whatever the term is :)

Ah fair enough :) Just looking now I marginally prefer Verdana over Tahoma because it is a touch bigger. Lucida is quite good. Arial is a bit tedious isn't it? It is effective though I'll give it that

I tend to use Arial a lot in Word docs etc so it looks normal to me. It doesn't stand out but I am used to reading it

Absolutely. And you can go too far the other way, too 'fancy' so it becomes hard to read that way. Not that those three options are. I'm trying not to be overly critical because I know you said what is there isn't the finished article.
option one is what's on the site now, so if we stick with it, the body typeface seen in TM's article today will be the finished article. so please be critical.
we're almost certainly not going with verdana/tahoma unless you can convince m'lady. i'll twitpic a sample lucida i a sec.
I think the that font is easy to read and doesn't distract from the words.

to me it's slightly 'thinner', for want of a better description. it might just be change for the sake of it though
I don't like that one as much. It is much bolder and I think reading that for any time the black/white contrast would be a problem.

It is bolder, I find the current one isn't quite bold enough and perhaps the new one is too bold. I mean there's a lot more white on what we have now and for me that is worse. That could be the silly lighting I have in here though, it is quite dark and the screen is bright, so I need to see it in office conditions tomorrow as well. :)

to me the current one on the site is what i'd call "bolder", eg. the text is thicker. or do i have that wrong? ludica seems more "spindly" and there's more white-space between the characters

I think a lot of people wouldn't know to do that though.
This is in XP.
Control Panel / Display / Appearance / Effects and then where it says about smoothing fonts (2nd dropdown) change it from Standard to Cleartype.
cleartype is on by default in vista and windows 7. just not in xp.
i think that's why verdana took off, because it just works

In IE8 the font looks identical to FF, but the header loses the gradient. But I never use IE, it is just there. I don't have another browser installed to test.

I like the look of it but you're right there is more space in it, perhaps too much. And it could be a touch bigger, not much though.

When I had a recurring summer job at a typesetters I learned about kerning and the other things you can do to tighten up the text to remove whitespace but that was in Freehand and Photoshop, I don't know that you could do that in HTML.
I did that when you mentioned about Steven and my sizes being different, nothing happened
i can do:
- line height
- text spacing
- text weight
but i think that's all
i think steven's browser might be zoomed out by one notch

The Blog page is is less bold but looks better than the zoom reset version of a normal page
