Bonjour. And it is another Monday, but it is not a normal Monday, it is in fact a Bank Holiday Monday. A day in which you have an excuse to do absolutely nothing all day. Unless you are working anyways, or have to revise 60 answers to questions of French for a speaking exam on the Tuesday. Ahh well, onto the bulletpoints...

  • First off, a big well done to our very own Turkey Machine, who managed to finish 176th in the Great East Anglia Run, and set it in a Personal Best time as well. So well done mate!
  • There was a ton of racing going on yesterday, pretty much everything except from F1 (back next week folks). In F2, there was a massive accident, with Ricardo Teixera going for flying lessons. In the BTCC, 0.009 seconds separated 1st from 2nd (though only after the original winner got disqualified). And the new Silverstone layout was used for the first time in the FIA GT1 series, but it has been receiving mixed reviews over the weekend. And our man on the ground, Pat W, has similar feelings.
  • And finally, Romain Grosjean wants to get back into F1. Of course, as he is a fellow RG, I hope he gets a chance (that is my only reason to be fair). He wasn't too impressive when he replaced Nelson Piquet jr, but do you think he will fit back into F1, perhaps at the new team that will be coming in next season?

I suppose I'll do the hard thing of plugging my own work, my thoughts on the greatest Finn of all time. It may come to a surprise to a few people. Also, since its a recurring theme in the last few days, to all you de-lurkers, say hi. We had Steven Prussia pop in today to continue one de-lurk a day (nice work lou!) So join the comments, what is the worst that can happen?

And so, here is to a new week. Have a nice Monday.

Maybe Mr C can make a portable, do-it-yourself live commenting system that can be used at any time on another site. kind of a fake or delayed sidepodcast. SPCplayer? SPCOD? SPCIQ? SPCview?

2 hours less commuting: 10 points

Awesome new internet and Cable-TV package: 8 pts ;)

That's the one thing desirable about European internet - it's so much better than UK broadband.

Just what the teams don't need. While I'm sure they'll be able to get stuff down in trucks, they'd better remember to put everything they want on the trucks the first time because they might not be able to send forgotten stuff on planes closer to the time...

Joe's point stands but I dont know many sites that claim to be in the paddock who arent, other than GMM.

please point some out to me if I've missed them though, i dont go on a huge amount of f1 sites

Geese are scary. When I tried to shoo one away it just stared me down and hissed. I backed off!

  • Lukeh03/05/2010 at 21:02

    You got attacked by geese?

I didn't get attacked by geese but we stood staring at one who came closer... and closer... and closer... just staring, putting it's arms up staring at my white jacket. I think it thinks I was a goose.

I agree that people shouldn't be led into thinking that they are, but I don't know how you'd make it obvious that you arent in the paddock without putting a disclaimer on the front page like The Runoff area do because people took their stories too seriously

In retrospect that makes no sense at all, silly confusing ducks :(

Lou needs to take you to the zoo more often

Make sure you listen when you are there ;)

i've been trying to teach him the difference between a moorhen and a duck since november... the fact there were moorhens, swans, ducks, and geese at hampton court today has obviously confused things somewhat..

  • lou03/05/2010 at 21:09

    Oh dear!

    it was a hilarious :D

  • me03/05/2010 at 21:10

I agree that people shouldn't be led into thinking that they are, but I don't know how you'd make it obvious that you arent in the paddock without putting a disclaimer on the front page like The Runoff area do because people took their stories too seriously

the thing is, you and i know joe is in the paddock and we know james allen is (mostly) in the paddock. and we have the common sense to figure out most other bloggers beside those two are not.

sadly however, the majority of people don't seem to understand that distinction and blindly believe that planet f1 spend all year travelling to races. i have no idea how to solve that problem, although i suspect from reading the comments on joe's post, people are too stupid to see the difference and why it's important.

  • lou03/05/2010 at 21:10

In retrospect that makes no sense at all, silly confusing ducks :(

they really aren't as confusing as you think..

today we saw Swans, ducks...a moorhen family (which you thought were ducks)...and a black and white duck you thought was a moorhen.

  • me03/05/2010 at 21:11

maybe gmm have had it right all along? they're ripping off the stupid people, and in reality that's probably what they deserve.

To be fair I should have given up guessing when I started saying the ravens/blackbirds were ducks

true. :) let's not even start on the flowers (although it's okay you don't know different flowers)

i fear if i ever take you to an Avery (do they even have one in London?) you may actually explode with confusion about all the birds

  • Turkey Machine03/05/2010 at 21:16

yeah i guess, and that's probably where I can't comment because i'll never understand people who think PF1 is in the paddock! I think until they've seen the difference they wont understand.

The guys comment I was referring too also has a point though I think, it is how you start these days but as a site gets more viewers the blind will always trust it implicitly, so it will never end.

  • lou03/05/2010 at 21:20

see i disagree. if you really want to an f1 journalist, write original articles.

write opinion pieces that no-one else does. ones that give insight into your vast understanding of the sport. pieces that display how wonderful you are with words and how you can spin multiple fragmented arguments together to form a cohesive whole.

don't repeat second-hand, unverified news. who's going to employ you if you do that?

  • Jon Waldock03/05/2010 at 21:21

    agreed. profit for zero effort.

nono im not saying rehash old stuff, im saying write new stuff but some people will always end up following it blindly. i think if you have a half decent site and are talking about f1 you're always going to get some people like that

Lukeh... I guess you didn't see my comment earlier (what with all the running around London etc) so I will repeat it:

I was going to tell you and Christine and any other Doctor Who people... But especially you Lukeh because of the Simpsons connection about a sudden thing that I woke up in the middle of the night and remembered...

It was about a Simpson's Halloween episode from 95 in which the statues in town came alive and the answer to make them go away was to not look at them:

    Err, ok

I actually stand corrected, it uses port 443 (HTTPS). But have a look at the recommendation for Skype and firewalls: http://www.skype.com/help/guides/firewalls/technical.html

    In particular this bit:

Ideally, outgoing TCP connections to all ports (1.65535) should be opened. This option results in Skype working most reliably. This is only necessary for your Skype connection to be able to connect to the Skype network and will not make your network any less secure.

    Yeah. Right.

13% of all international calls are skype now. I think you'd have to say skype is proper voip at that point.

And of course as we can all see soon it will all be that way.

Owing to the lack of F1 news the conversation the other day was about veruccas. We were worried where it would go after that and people started discussing coding. Now we are on to ports. I wonder where we will end up. People arguing that ducks are geese?

I think traditional telecoms still has a strong foothold, but I certainly agree that for businesses VoIP is the way forward, and it will likely produce about 70% of the traffic.

13% of all international calls are skype now. I think you'd have to say skype is proper voip at that point.

I disagree, mainly because I know the technical differences and why Skype has comparatively poor call quality, but I won't argue that here. However it is easy to say to relatives "download Skype" in far-flung countries.

I agree. When the put the chicane in at Woodcote in the 70s they ruined the circuit. Since then they keep tweaking and tweaking when it was a great track to start with

Yep. The first Woodcote chicane was OK but after that they have been trying to make it more like Brands and you can't do that on flat land

special occasion things tend to go on my wall (like my goodwood tickets etc)... and train tickets tend to build up in my purse... as do cinema tickets.

  • lou03/05/2010 at 22:55

I used to keep tickets from everything. I never put them on a wall but I always kept them

i'm really pleased there are other people who do/ did this... my friends think it's very strange, and can't see why i'd bother.
