Hello all! It’s Wednesday again! Hope your week is going well… I am incredibly busy but at least I’m not bored ;)
F1 News
Bit of a busy day yesterday. Seems like Williams have made some sweeping changes, sacking Sam Michael and their chief aerodynamicist. If that wasn’t shocking enough, they hired Mike Coughlan in his place. You know, the former McLaren guy caught trying to photocopy Ferrari blueprints? It looks like Williams are becoming more and more desperate these days – one does wonder whether this is something that can be corrected or if it is far too late? Anyway, Christine and Joe have the matter covered…
The other piece of news is that News Corporation and a FIAT consortium called Exor are bidding to buy F1. Guess who has you covered? ;) Also, check out the fantastically complicated ownership structure of F1!
The FIA have revealed the DRS Zone for Turkey … and it just happens to be where Webber & Vettel collided last year. I wonder if that’s a bad sign or not?
Speaking of team mate clashes, the one year anniversary of this event has inspired BadgerGP to write an article on their top 5 – no prizes for guessing that the top one is between Prost and Senna!
It was the anniversary of Senna’s passing last Sunday and Motorsport Retro has a couple of great articles – well, they have more but they have been linked to before. The first is a bunch of great Senna pics from the Cahier Archive, but the second is much more interesting. Apparently Senna had a go at being a rally driver – for a magazine article of course, but it’s still very interesting…
Here’s a picture of the Circuit of the Americas – the Austin home of the US GP. Nice mud patch – wonder if they will start building soon?
Jake Humphrey has blogged about his flight in the Lancaster Bomber for the Royal Wedding – it didn’t go quite as planned but it sounded like an awesome experience…
Mike Gascoyne is in a new Team Lotus video blog explaining what they were doing in the Straight Line Tests at Duxford. Sounds interesting…
Have you checked out Christine’s Driver and Team Rankings yet? There’s some great things worth checking out there.
From The Blogs
I’ve got loads of great links from the blogotron for you:
Leigh was sent a link to something completely different – trailer park racing! Have Top Gear tried this one yet? He’s also blogged about a very silly rule that Indycar has about defending one’s position…
RG has started a series of posts blogging about the Eurovision songs – I am so looking forward to this event and it’s coming up soon!
Pat’s been reminiscing about the awesome SidepodSpa Trip – writing about Saturday (it appears he remembers a whole lot more of the evening than I do!) and also he’s been to the 2011 Donington Historic event with some pics and videos to boot.
Christine has been blogging about running, The Archers, a 30-day song challenge and holidays by the sea – so she’s been a busy lady lately…
Have you seen Lukeh’s fantastic portrait blog? I love his drawings and here is a great one of the Cardiff Bay Church. And congrats on the new job mate!
Giggles has also been very busy lately – he’s had a spurt of making loads of lovely demos – Two on Airplay, in fact. it’s inspired him to make a Sidepodwiki page about making a video demo of Sidepodcast. If anyone can do it, Giggles can!
Funnies
Here’s one that will hit you for 6 – Nick found this great audio commentary piece from a cricket match – a ball was hit through the commentary box window during the game and it was handled in a way only the BBC could manage!
I was sent a link to a great cartoon series called Party Cat – very funny and not unlike a cat I used to have…
Have you seen this Twitter Fail Whale hat? Awesome!
Springfield Punx are doing a Doctor Who week in honour of the new series starting – so here are Days 1 and 2!
So that’s all from me. Hope you have a great day and see you in the comments :)
Hi Wednesday and cheers for the links Gavin
Good morning Wednesday :)
I just realised that it is Star Wars day
So it is!
and for all the talk of ipads in kitchens last night, I believe the magnets in the iPad 2 will stick it to the fridge.
I haven't actually tried this though, so I could be wrong :D
Sounds like it could end with a smashed ipad....
it would need to be a careful test.
Even if it sticks, it's not like you could just leave it there....
Even if it stuck it is probably going to gradually slide down due to the weight

I'm not sure why you'd want to anyway.
I often find spoons stuck to my iPad though :(
Yes I was going to say that. I'd be much more concerned about what might happen if someone opened the door though....!!
:D
That's not a problem you hear about every day!
Hi tec notice board? :P
Great to see online recipes. Better than me putting my laptop on top of the microwave and trying to find a clean way to scroll.
And hi. :)
I put mine on the bench, but I do have an awful lot of bench space
I could use the counter, which I do, but I want it up and out of the way in case there's a splash of something. A bench sounds better.
I think bench is just another term for counter :D
Game results Ping - http://toomuchracing.com/2011/05/04/tmr-game-2011-week-15/
And I'm off to bed because that took way too long to put together (easily distracted) and I've been sat on office chairs all day!
Can't underestimate the impact of a splash #sorrygiggles
hehe
So many people have actual bench-like seating in their kitchens here that I pictured that.
Separated by one language... :)
Good night, will feel good to stretch out, I bet.
:)
heheh!
Just when you think you know all the differences a new one pops up.
Yay for learning! hehe
I'm not sure you were here when this happened. Alex has written a rather wonderful book. This one time I kind of coated it in soya milk....
My kitchen is U shaped so I cook one on leg of the U and leave my cookbooks and iPad on the other so theres no splash risk. :)
I wouldn't call it a bench but I would know what that meant because that's what you'd be more likely to call the worktop in a professional kitchen here
I stay away from soya milk myself... :)
It's great to have that space.
You'd be wise to keep your possessions away from me :P
Question: How do I get around having giant URL's in twitter from articles I want to share and stuff? Bit.ly?
thats the one I use, I believe there are others out there too.
never used it. What do you do?
go to http://bit.ly/, paste your long url in the box and hit 'shorten'
I just did it before I read that. How utterly simple. Embarrassing to have asked, holy cow. :)
I have good news. I submitted a voice over audition last night for a documentary, and today I got an invite to audition for another project!
thats awesome! And very different to teaching too :)
Fantastic
Thanks. They're very small things, but their very big to me.
And different is so good. I just got my haircut, too. There's change all over the place, and it feels great.
Do you guys have lots of people with seasonal allergies? It's really hitting hard around here right now. So many people are really suffering.

after almost three weeks in the wilderness I finally downloaded and read the China GP+ issue. the publishing speed obviously is not that important to me :-)
it is definitely good to get some F1 memory refreshment before the season restarts in (almost) Europe

the magnets in the smart cover are stronger than they look :D
Still wouldn't trust it to not fall off eventually though

WoW!
Duff Man... Approves!
Duff Man!
it'd look more daring on the top half but that would have meant moving lots of other magnets :D
always pays to have a bottle opener handy :)
you seem to have an alert on the screen there... Does the alert say, "um Amy? Have you gone mad?"
ooooooohhhhhh yeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!
it was this tweet! http://twitter.com/#!/cb_s/status/65633120346578944 I'd already seen it on my phone so I just left it there :)
aha!
Joe and Benson are pals http://twitter.com/#!/andrewbensonf1/statuses/65702322554159104
I remember something about Joe getting him his first job from an aside?
and yes, good food and wine sounds erm, good.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/wiki-highlights-finding-your-way-around
uh oh, must be daily 'cringe at buxton tweets' time :D
why - what's he saying now?
he says "I could react. I really could. But I won't." which makes me instantly go 'uh oh, whats she been saying now" and I can only imagine its in regards to
"non motorsport day researching nursery for Pickle, imp decision. Her dad was asked, but not interested, so all on me! yikes! here goes..."
I would be furious if someone was trying to imply to friends, colleagues and strangers that I'm a bad parent.
I saw the first one from her, and raised an eyebrow
Unreal.
By the way folks, the "Senna" film was worth the wait. Very well made, very emotional stuff and lots of shivers down the spine moments.
There were talks by Sir Jackie Stewart and the producer and director, as well as pieces by Martin Brundle.
The best part of the night was a brief talk by Prof Sid Watkins - when he was talking was when I really choked up.
I apologise in advance to Pamela as when we go see it I'll probably cry. I always cry.
I got teary watching Masterchef last night. Oops.
Because you reeeeally wanted their desserts?
Was it filmed?
it made the news! Which is exactly why they broadcast it like that, because it plays with peoples emotions and gets them talking. Boooo TV.
http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/tv-and-radio/hughes-shocks-judges-with-masterchef-refusal-20110504-1e7dt.html
I think so. The night was presented by James Allen, so I assume he'll put clips of the interviews on his site.
I had no idea Senna movie is out on BluRay in Japan and Brazil already ... I think I need to go out to the city to visit the places stuff from Japan is sold
woohooo! John cooks the best crocodile of the day. No tears tonight :D
Crocodile!
I've eaten it before but I've never cooked it. Apparently its easy to overcook :)
Bad form innit.
"I could react. I really could. But I won't."
will buxton in restrained tweeting shocka?
I have shaved so I can record some of the stuff for the demos... I hope you are honoured ;)
Are you putting on a smart suit and everything?
OOh, can you do a wiki demo?
I would add it to the wiki, but i need the demo first
I wasn't thinking of it!
:)
Just wondered how far you were taking it :)
I don't know either!
That's great Alex
I don't know a lot of things

Well that was exciting... I've finished recording now :)
Not in total but the bits from the site
Gosh, that was quick.
Well lets just see how long it takes to edit ;)
So now we have all moved desks! Pandemonium here as everything is being de-cupboarded...
Hug? ;)
Ooh, I like decupboarded!
That's just way too messed up. Someone should really tell them (well, her) to stop washing dirty linen in public.
Oh Yeah! :D
Generally if people have to be told they shouldnt do things like that, they wont listen
First (and probably last) time the European season opens there.
...Outside of Europe...
Aren't they an EU country? If they are, that's good enough. :D
They're not, and because the circuit lies on the other side of the Bosphorous strait it's considered to be on the Asian side of Turkey. It's only European for an F1 team because they can send trucks down, right?
Yup, that's pretty much it.
nooooooooooooooooo
:D
Half the city is in Europe half the city in Asia...
and I am pleased I'm not there. Weather sounds awful :D
Ant appears to have a project for the day.. http://yfrog.com/h86h0vtj
Gunning for a world record. Have they fixed the PSN? how will it be posted
This is kinda fun http://www.biomotionlab.ca/Demos/BMLwalker.html
I can't believe I didn't realise it was Star Wars Day today!
Very cool Dan - love that kind of stuff - Did you see the skeleton version? :-)

So... I wonder if this had anything to do with Parr's attempted resignation?
Williams sign 'Spygate' engineer Mike Coughlan as infighting escalates
The article also mentions an insider who thinks Sam and Jon are just scapegoats. I don't know about you, but 0 championships in 10 years with you at the helm doesn't quite make you a scapegoat. Reminds me of what Joe said earlier about Sam being a great politician.
Ooooh I love the GT3 version of the McLaren! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id7YR5JqJqs
Evening, it's all a bit quiet today!
I take it everyone is lurking in preparation for giggles? :D
heh... me too :)
There has been a lot of editing... and there has been a lot of learning about new tools and there has been a lot of getting confused about the weird compression settings on certain kinds of video... it's all very exciting :)
Good evening
Evening Pat
been busy. just reading the daily, then i'm away again. looking forward to giggles though :)
The Gigglevideos?
I was busy at work so no lurking today.
i ♥ the blogotron :)
fabulous daily sir gavin.
"Nick found this great audio commentary piece from a cricket match – a ball was hit through the commentary box window during the game and it was handled in a way only the BBC could manage!"
c.l.a.s.s!
Listened to that last night after the link and forgot to comment about it. Very coolly-handled! You can imagine a bit of flapping around but all professional enough to do it quietly, only the BBC would do that :)
I would have run screaming!
i commented a while ago about podsafe-music-creator derek k. miller's loosing battle with cancer. he finally lost his fight: http://www.penmachine.com/2011/05/the-last-post
we used his track on this show: http://sidepodcast.com/post/video-6-canada-preview
That is such a good idea, to write a post to be posthumously published!
For my own #rankings consideration next week: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicorosbergpics/5674034412/
There is video of him being driven on that by Benz's grand-daughter at the end of the DTM clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syR5v_--BAU
Oooh, marvellous.
What an incredibly good post it is too. Great to see someone facing what he was facing but thinking so clearly about every aspect of it.
I guess pretty soon everyone will have one of these posts ready to go up on the day they die.
included as part of a will maybe?
That seems the logical place to do it. Of course there could be a nice little business here. Imagine charging $10 to hold the post and the sites it is to be posted on and making sure it is put up at the correct time. Then another charge to maintain the hosting on the person's website for the next however many years as an archive.
i like that idea. you need to pitch that to a dragon.
ALISON!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure something like this already exists. Maybe I dreamed it.
I am not suggesting she is a dragon btw
:)
You do like to get yourself in trouble :)
That is the problem with the internet. 2 and a half minutes after I suggested it and Amy tries to rip off my idea
I just can't help myself

I think Giggles should have told us

:D
Hellooooo Merry Starwars Day Sidepodders :D
actually what I saw is coming back to me and it may have been just a report on the increasing number of people leaving passwords in their wills with instructions to their family to tell their online friends they've died, no real actual pre written blog posts as such.
Continue with your plan.
Heh wrong spelling!
What are the chances....
from prior sidepod experience? About 98%
There was also a thing recently about Facebook dealing with accounts for people who have died.
:)
:D I have been at work all day, not waiting in the comments for someone to ask for me. Honest :P
ah yes one of my friends' brother died about a year ago and she was getting mad because they filled in some form to get Facebook to 'memorialise' his page but Facebook had to take it down to do it and she was getting sad that his page disappeared. It came back eventually and she was happy again.
It also works for taxis, trams, buses, the weather, trains and Beurb from Spa. You're in esteemed company.
Don't I feel special :D
I have seen that happen a couple of times. About ten years ago I used ten-tenths as my main motor racing forum and one day the daughter of one of the commentors turned up and announced he had been killed in a car crash. He was really popular and everyone was gutted. A few days later he appeared and said he had been away at the time and someone nicked his car and crashed it killing himself. So he wasn't dead at all.
I can see law suits here
This is sidepodcast. Co-incidence is normal
Two weeks ago Mr C knew nothing about baseball. After a ver short discussion he discovered he had a shirt from a baseball team that not only was my favourite team that I had telling him about but it had my favourite player's name on the back.
Jeter!
wow! I did actually find myself wondering the other day when the post thanking all the daily writers went up whatever happened to Marilene
hasn't blogged or tweeted since august :(
indeed, others have drifted away from commenting but I still see them blogging and tweeting so I know they're OK. It makes me worried for her.
I emailed her a month or so after she disappeared but there was no response.
That's him
:(
It's a weird thought really. I'm sure Nick would tell you if anything happened to me.
Should have said if you are out there Catman say hello. You would love sidepodcast.
Thats one reason I enjoy the flight tracking here. It's always nice to know people have got where they're going.
I have wondered before how long he'd have to be MIA for before I assumed it was something serious....
Well its almost 4am here so I'd better go to sleep or I won't have any energy for that pesky run thats lurking in my tomorrow.
in your case, probably about 23 seconds. the rest of us though, quite a while.
;)

While we're on this odd subject I did actually have this thought the other day when I commented during the royal wedding that I needed to go up in the loft but I would be back before the carriges and everything. I didn't come back because I forgot. I didn't actually check to see if anyone missed me but I suddenly thought about it when I was going to sleep that night.
Hah! I'm not that paranoid....
I remember you saying you were going, if that helps :)
Still alive
Just in the pub!
Hello all, I see there is another Sidepodcast no one is going to believe this at work tomorrow discussion going on ;)
So here's the sidepodcast demo. I seem to be looking a bit blurry at the beginning and I have been trying to work that out for a bit but can't figure out why. But take a look at the content and please tell me what you think:
http://vimeo.com/23275107
I've seen this a couple of times. One in an old forum when a guy's daughter came on to tell us he'd passed away, and another a few weeks ago on Facebook when someone else from the same old forum had died.
I do sometimes wonder about one of the guys from there who always made a joke about how old he was, he tended to go away for a while and come back, and he's not come back (although the forum moved he'd still get there via Google)
do we have those frequently?
:)
What a relief! :P
oooooh, ace. quite low quality though?
Good night
I have an idea for the podcast #feedback
How about a section on interesting things from the coments?
Could entice more people to comment?
Just an idea :)
Sometimes, the people at work were looking at me strangely today when I shared Amy's ipad stuck to the fridge
How was the first day at school?
Best not mentioned :)
heheeh!!!
Giggles, you're soo sneaky. That's why your comment was in the wrong thread!
Also, you "boom"ed!
Yeah it looks great just before it's exported, so it's recorded in high quality just need to fix it some how :)
Best training method I know. Get the users to say to me, "but isn't that in the wrong place" so you don't have to tell them.
Just watching the Giggles vid and a thought struck me. Mike Coughlan's return has sparked all sorts of comments here and on twitter about whether he should be allowed in F1 after the spy thing. Phil McKerrell who took McLaren data to Renault has never missed a day's work as a result of that and has been forgotten about. So if it is OK for him to continue without a break then there is no reason why the others involved in these matters should not work in F1 after a ban.
Factbyte Factbox is too hard to say :)
can you export to iphone size?
It is
I'll give it a go
that preset is pretty good if i recall.
One thing I have learned from the Giggles video is how to link to an individual Tweet, I never knew how people did that.
I'm not using iMovie in the end :(
Because of getting the whole thing synced up i've edited it in Camtasia. Which captured the screen and the video in one fell swoop. It's actually very nice to use software. It looks great in the software at full screen. But when you go to export it comes out rubbish :(
It took me a little time to figure that out when people started doing it. I just went and clicked on everything to do with the tweet until I eventually found the right one
a.mazini giggles
AMAZING. That's made my year.
ahh, any options. can you do h.264 etc?
I want it to look good and we can put it in a post and point everyone at it.
Wow thanks :)
Hello everyone :)
That is the h.264 version.
I'm working through a few things.
Really brilliant, it's going to be such a great thing to link new commenters to :)
oh, then usually you just up the data rate and set it to double pass.
The best thing about the video is that it made everything look simple. Explaining the various options to new people can make it sound complicated but this did not do that.
Hi Marti
I did the double pass... I'll hunt around for a data rate option... It's currently attempting a version called "3G" which I thought might be the closest to the iPhone version
I've noticed Alex has discovered how to get a tweet's URL code.
I must know how to do it! Could you explain me where the explanation is?
It's during this: http://vimeo.com/23275107
fair call (it was phil mackereth btw). the fia were hopeless during that case, but red bull did go on to employ him. in his defence though, phil stole 'an image' of 'a j-damper'. mike stole the designs for a whole frickin' car.
probs very low quality that one.
Yeah... I'm going to try a phew different things...
few even
Do I want Restrict Profiles to: Main, Baseline or none? Main currently selected
Thanks!
main is good, yup.
Data rate? Currently 512 kbits/sec
recommended:
data rate: 1500 kbps
multi-pass: on
key frames: automatic
audio: 44.1kHz
think that's all i have.
Phil had a lot more than that. Amongst other things he had the GA drawing for the McLaren which was worth a lot to Renault. At the time they had the weird rear-biased weight distribution and the McLaren GA drawing gave their weight distribution. When the McLaren QC asked someone at Renault if the info on the GA drawing would be useful in designing their car Max interrupted proceedings and announced that there was nothing to e gained from speculation.
I've just found out how to get the URL of my twitter messages. Thanks Alex :)
i thought matt bishop claimed he had a lot more than that, then backtracked in a most spectacular manner?
Cheers... I'll give that a go... I think there might be some other issues... I'm having a look :)
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/turkey-2011-race-information
The GA drawing and several others were mentioned in the FIA transcripts. I read all the transcripts and Max shut down the McLaren QC as soon as he asked about the value of the GA
Time to leave.
Bye bye everyone :) Tomorrow will be Thursday, only one day until F1 comes back!
What's a GA Drawing?
Bye Marti
General assembly. It gives the basic layout of the car so things like wheelbase, track, weight distribution and the exact location of major components etc
In other words, a base for making a clone of it?
My wife is on the PC looking at dress photos, I am watching football and blogging. Happy times in the goat pen.
Or in Renault's case all the information necessary to sort out the horrific weight distribution problems they had. Yet the FIA did no even check the car they built for the following season to see if it had any of the features shown on the GA
Course not. It was all about getting Ron Dennis. Quite why he didn't get Flav too when he wanted his hide I don't know.
Cos Flav and Bernie were buddies then
aha.
I read something really weird about those two recently. Bernie is apparently selling his shares in QPR now they have made the premiership. He owns 92% of the shares since he bought out Flavio but says he can't sell the shares without Flavio's agreement.
What an odd situation
I heard QPR were gonna get docked points for a 3rd party player. Is that still gonna happen?
I'm hearing 50/50 about that, some say they'll get away some say they'll get some points off. Decision Friday I think...
#nothere
I heard something about that but I don't know the details
So this is why Bernie is threatening to sell. He can't blackmail the FA the same way he blackmails the FIA
none more black: http://twitpic.com/4tdbim
(via @redbullf1spy)
Phew, I was worried it might be all yellow.
They surely don't plan to leave it like that. It looks awful. They need Lou
looks like a minardi.
Looks like they have picked up all the rubber they have scattered around the world and glued it on.
They could have done something with their red and yellow or with the colours they have on their race tyres. Imagine how bad that is going to look on a dull rainy day
I think it's fine. Seems to be their livery, Yellow/Red on Black

Evening all
Woah, a galactic hyper-hearse!
I like it
Looks like this one is going to split opinions.
@GrandPrixDiary
Apparently, Pirelli have a sodding great big, shiny new motorhome in Istanbul. Let's hope it does not degrade too much over the season.
Nice design. Minimalist colour scheme. Nothing too shouty or overbearing (apart from the big Pirelli logos)
And not all yellow.
:D
They could have made it look a bit more interesting than matte black

Great idea.
Did I miss a quiz? I was off-keyboard, Mum came over for a cup of tea, then I was sorting myself dinner and a shower, then starting reading stuff to go into the Daily and lost track of time.
I don't think so (I probably should know for certain). Wednesdays are absolutely useless for me to organise a quiz this year and Jackie is STILL fighting with Sky to get broadband connected.
This looks really cool. Watch this trailer: http://vimeo.com/21066666
still???
would you believe she moved into a house with no phone socket? #19thCentury
That's amazing, Sky must be the most useless pieces of... work.
I just checked the chat and no. Sort of a shame but if everyone's busy it can't be helped. Anyway apparently there was some sort of kickball thing happening at the same time so I imagine attention would've been on that.. Apprentice time soon as well.
Ohh. Sounds like needing to persuade BT to install a line without providing a service afterwards... I don't think they like that.
it's actually a sky/BT combined effort as it's partly due to hardwiring
Doubt it. I was blogging while it was on. Football is very easy to follow when you have something else to do - you just look at the TV when there's more noise!
no
although there was a cable outside I believe - previous owner seems to have plastered over the socket or something
Totally agree. It's even the best way to watch cricket.
we would've moved out agin, long before now.
Wow, superb
Never heard of Ab Jenkins. Looks like an interesting watch
Our burglar alarm has just woken me up :(
Better than a burglar.
Can't work out what set it off. So maybe there is a burglar :P
looks like joe got the exclusive on this story: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/pollock-heads-new-p-u-r-e-f1-engine-company/
autosport just confirmed: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/91107
Former BAR team principal Craig Pollock is to return to Formula 1 in 2013 as the head of a new customer engine supply company.
Good news on the video quality issue... I think, thanks to Mr C's mad skilz, I have worked out what to do. A new version is uploading and I'll post a link once it's done. Probably about an hour or so to go because of the conversion process...
I saw that earlier. Wonder what his plans are
Woooohoo!
To be incompetent in new and interesting ways.
heheheeh!!
go on then... thoughts on mr pollock? honda didn't do much better without him and neither has JV.
although his album was quite good.
Never thought highly of the man. His involvement with JV ruined his career too. It's a shame he can't be banned from the sport either ;)
It's like the Coughlan/McKerreth thing. Some people get vilified and others don't. Peter WIndsor knew everyone in F1 and tried to set a new team and despite all that never managed to get close to making a car or raising a budget. Pollock had never worked in F1 and built a team from scratch and raised a huge amount of money
JV was and is his own man
convinced to go to BAR because his manager was there, and turned down a McLaren drive because Pollock gave him loadsa money?
JV wanted to do a start up as well as did his father.
Thought the only way to win in F1 was to do a Schumacher and build a team around you.
Like Prost did and Senna and Stewart and CLark and Brabham(twice) etc
Yeah but he stayed too long - it was clear that they were never gonna succeed after a couple of years.
As Steven says he was his own man... I never once heard JV ever admit a mistake. I don't think he had it in him.
Sounds like we have a few fans here. I was never that enamoured by JV for some reason.
there is no 'McKerreth', just so you know :) :)
I could write a whole treatise on it and in other places I have. Where to start..
BAR were utterly hopeless from the get go. Even worse than the team they replaced (and didn't they fire nearly everyone from Tyrrell, even the good people?). Promising to win their first race just because their technical partner had a good rep elsewhere, all marketing jazz before a car had even turned a wheel. Peter Windsor modelled USF1 on them I'm sure of it. Pretty sure they are what brought down Reynard, one of the most respected independent constructors in racing at the time with a highly enviable record.
Spent however many years was it, running at the back end of the grid, giving best buddy JV a massive retainer whilst the car was hopeless. I can't remember exactly now but some of the stuff he came out with was priceless. The guy was a deluded moron. The only credit I give him was to get BAT to spend a shedload of money year after year on a heap of junk.
They only got better when he was gone but Honda carried on in the same vein for a while, it wasn't until they became technically-led rather than marketing-led that they got anywhere. Dave Richards and Prodrive worked wonders.
What Pat said.
I always liked him but given who he was that was always going to be the case. Before he made F1 his reputation was that he was more a Prost than a Villeneuve but it turned out that wasn't exactly true. He was a real racer
I liked JV in '97.
You said that was his name

:)
ooh, tom cary is complaining people jumped the embargo:
@tomcaryf1: @autosportnews @alanbaldwinf1 @eason52 @byronf1 00:01 embargo?!
and in response:
@byronf1 @tomcaryf1 Catch up. Pollock's people have given the go-ahead.
it's the infinity thing all over again!
I liked his music ;)
No I wasn't really a fan... I aways thought he was too fat headed to work for Ron so it probably was a good decision to go somewhere else, but that didn't work either :)
Reynard were the people who said they had won their first race in every class they ever entered so they could not see why F1 would be different
I blame the timezones.
Given who he was I was disappointed.
Same, but looking back, it's a miracle he won at all in that year!
seems like the embargo was overruled.
I think they were saying that with a pinch of salt, it was BAR who took it and ran with it.
Sounds Windsor-esque.
I think Reynard convinced BAR
nope. BAR made the grid.
But if USF1 had made the grid, there wouldn't be much dissimilar.
yeah but I was obliquely referring to the James Key fiasco a few weeks ago ;)
so did BAR's slogan now that you mention it "a tradition of excellence"
usf1 didn't make the grid. that was beyond windsor's limited talent.
whatever pollock is, he's better than windsor. although that isn't a massive bar to leap :)
ooooooooooooh #toosubtle
Exactky
with an l not a k
wha??
too late at night more like!
pun unintended?
I may have a surprise for you tomorrow...
Only barely. Same school of management/thought I'm sure of it. Anderson's meddling did for USF1 as much as anything Windsor did (or more accurately, didn't do).
fair enough. i guess the zipper livery is kinda unforgivable too :)
I'd blame anderson more, what Windsor wasn't doing shouldn't have prevented a toaster being built
should be shot for that alone
but anderson didn't have a picture of jim clark on his wall.
Was just about to add that. How can they not have noticed that no F1 team has run independent liveries for years?
Well it's a collective responsibility. Whether they could actually produce the goods isn't all that relevant. Anyone can be a bit overambitious and fail at something. The problem is pretending they could do it long after they must have known it was impossible.
They announced that before they'd even entered a race, cue hysteria from fan forums :) :)
Right... Here we go... I have prepared 2 count them versions... One is "HD" version: http://vimeo.com/23283915
But while it looks better I don't think it looks quite as good as this "non-HD" version that I've also made: http://vimeo.com/23285665
Any thoughts? Good enough?
unreal. i've corrected their slogan for them for historical accuracy:
"a of"
catchy.
I don't see that as a problem, just comical
That's fine unless you have bills to pay etc.
interesting, i prefer the non-hd version. which is a first!
Me too... I think it's been upscaled by the thing creating it or something?
giggles, you are a frickin legend. we owe you sir. thanks you.
no problem at all
no idea, but the quality is perfect.
Send him a cake!
:)
:)
Ah yes... Nobody has yet sent me Lou's address... must ask Lukeh when I see him!
Bake it bake it bake it!
So I might well delete the first two videos now then... Leaving only the non-HD new one? Does that work?
agreed
I think there are a few here who became fans of the team after say '04/'05 and maybe don't know how much they were considered a joke in their early days.
They had all that money and all those promises and all that talent and couldn't even score a point, yet their previous incarnation Tyrrell managed it.. just..
Just reading Wiki which I know is not the arbiter of accuracy but it is good enough. I'd forgotten that in 1999 JV had a run of 11 straight DNFs, he didn't finish a race until Belgium. In September.
"Thanks to the backing from BAT, British American Racing benefitted from significant funding and a lavish budget in their opening season but it was reported that by half way through the season they had already overspent that budget by enough to keep Formula 1 minnows Minardi racing for several years." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_American_Racing
As I now say... Boom ;)
Done :)
:)
i remember the crashes at spa. not much before that.
Oooh looks like there will be lots of CHAMPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGNE in Spain then?
yay!
although maybe not so much of a surprise?
should've embargoed that.
Wow, 500!
Also not so much a surprise now
It was an open tweet though ...
Exactly, he ought to have sent a DM..
And Minardi did score a point that year - amusingly thanks to JV's retirement in the closing laps
not you. him :)
I know! :)
oh phew.
One thing on the Pollock engine thing...
"Jean Todt has been informed and is very supportive, Bernie is fully aware and also supportive..."
What happened to Bernie being anti-new engines?
my question then was, since when did bernie care about engine noise, or for that matter anything except for money? maybe someone paid him to like em :)
it drowns out Eddie Jordan?
:)
Hello all
or should I say anyone
Hi Joe
Hello. I just visited my local Pakistani shopkeep for some beer. I was delighted to hear that he enjoyed our Navy's short vacation in Pakistan.
So what's up?
I'm just writing the new Daily.
watching baseball here. Looking forward to some on track activity

Plenty of it this weekend too
I am phoneless at work. What if somethings happening on twitter, I won't know about it for hours! Thats if I can find my phone when I get home of course.
Anything I can check for you, or certain people, or is it just to keep up with stuff in general? I would feel so uncomfortable not having that portal to the outside world.
Just stuff in general :) I always lose my phone at home because I'm never attached to it as I'm always within a metre or two of a computer or iPad but when i'm at work I like having it nearby because so many of the things I keep an eye on throughout the day are blocked on my work computer.
Got it. We have a bunch of things blocked at work, too, but it's also blocked on wireless devices, so it doesn't help to have my iPod.
It also messes up my plan to go running tonight, I have to go as soon as I get in the door so I can do as much of my run as possible while its daylight so I'll have to take my iPod instead of my phone. The change might kill me!
I have to go back through the comments to see your pic of how dark it gets. I couldn't look at it when I saw the comment. Good for you in your commitment.
Sunset is at 5:29pm and I don't get home from work until 5.20, looks like my whole run will be in the dark soon :(
Headlamp or run before work?
I used to walk before school in the morning and that meant it was pitch black sometimes. Once I was out with my headphones in and my flashlight and a dog came up to me and brushed my leg. I screamed at the top of my lungs only to realize what it was and that the owner was out with the dog.
hehehe
I'm seriously considering trying a morning run, I know I've said that before but getting out of bed is hard, I guess the key is to get to bed before 3 or 4 in the morning which is something I've never been good at :D
I'd need to go at about 7.30am to still be able to come home and have a shower and make it to work at 9am which is isn't tooo unreasonable I guess.
I hated the idea of getting up, but once I did and didn't think about it, it was good. And by the time you get to work, you're done! Worth a try?
I'll see if it works for me next week. I don't hold my breath :)
Getting up is hard but if you get yourself tired an early night becomes a whole lot easier
That's true.
I went to bed at 10.30 the other night, getting up at 8 was still just as hard as when I go to bed at 4 :D
Stupid sleep, ruins everything.
Deciding whether to include a song in the Daily post.
I actually had to rewrite the second part of it because I clicked away without saving a draft first, I forgot it doesn't autosave like Wordpress does, oops
Songs are good, but we were talking about sleep... do you have one in mind or would it take long?
Ack. I hate that kind of stuff.
That was just catching up though probably
Does anyone know what time the Silverstone race is on tv in the UK usually, and when coverage is over? A ballpark idea would be really helpful.
I've been in a constant state of catch up my whole life :)
Coverage starts at 12 or just after, race start at 1pm, and it runs until anything between 2.45 to 3.15. Then there's the forum part which could be up to an hour but sometimes isn't that long. Being the 'home' GP I expect it might have the longest of the lot though.
Got the band in mind, just picking the right one. I have to think about lyrics and stuff which I don't usually think about. :)
Thanks, that helps me plan. I appreciate it.
oh yes, the Fam Friendly filter. :)
