Happy Tuesday. Only a few more days till the next F1 race in Turkey and, far more awesome, till my well deserved holidays. I am going to visit Baile Átha Cliath and in my thoughts I am already there, struggling to focus on my daily duties, however I shall concentrate now and find some news and links for you.

This was big news in here: Rosberg made a DTM debut as a chauffuer. Well, at least it wasn't Adrian Sutil, but I think they wanted to keep their car in one piece. Paul di Resta went to Hockenheim to visit his DTM friends. Bruno Spengler from Canada won this first race of the new season and made Norbi Haug happy.

Mark Webber said he's open to switch teams in the future if Vettel Racing Team Red Bull doesn't extend his contract. It's a bout time, Mark. They are no good for you.

Bahrain has been given an extension to 3 June to decide whether the country's postponed Formula One race can be rescheduled this year.

Perth has named a suburb after Sir Jack Brabham. More on this at Joe's. And since you're already there you might as well want to read the other stories too, 'cause Joe has been busy yesterday. :-)

Force India want more pints ... err ... points. Paul di Resta: definitely maybe. Adrian Sutil: definitely not. My short opinion on that.

After DC had done some show racing in Singapore, Mark and Jaime raced through the streets of Turin at the weekend.

This cute Jaime chap went to a game of football yesterday and had an very common problem ... I translate: "What a bad referee ...". Sounds familiar? A never ending story.

This is amazing! The Dutch football team, VVV Venlo signed an 1,5 year old boy (!!!) after the had seen this video. Yes, this is ridiculous, And yes, this signing won't help VVV Venlo to reach anything, neither in the near nor more distant future.

In the Barcelona-Madrid-UEFA-saga started after last week's Champions league match and Jose's rant (see above) UEFA has rejected both team's complaints. As an answer Real started a digital war against Barcelona. And Jose called-up 19 players before tonight's Champions League match at Camp Nou. It is not over yet, and this night is going to be a night to remember ...

In the second CL match tomorrow night Manchester United host Schalke 04, but let's be frank, United is as good as through into the final. Schalke won't stop them. *bad language*

In the meantime in the Premier League. We're fifth!! Thanks to Tottenham's 2:1 defeat at Stamford Bridge me were able to overtake them on goal difference. Who would have dreamt about this in December, when we were like 17th or something (I suppressed it)???? And after Arsenal's - like AS Jimbo said "historical 1:0 win (over United), as they got the lead, and kept the lead" - Chelsea now are only 3 points behind the red ones from Manchester and the title race is back on. Chelsea are now our last hope ...

Also, do not miss the tennis action in Madrid.

Before I leave you a quick not regarding Spanish Wednesday. Due to the amount of work I simply do not have as much time as I used to and I am not able to write the dailies regularly every week. I appologize.

Oh, and to end up in style: a postcard from Diego F. :-)

Have a super Tuesday!

    Morning :)

    I have an exam today.

I've also just heard I'm being transferred at work. My boss is in tears down the phone. I think this could be turning into a day to forget.

I'm very used to being the king of a small castle at the moment and I'm being moved somewhere where I'm going to have a lot more input from a line manager basically all the time so it's gonna be a big adjustment.

Not because I'm in trouble I should add. It is a big opportunity. I'm going to a mega busy site which is why there's more managers on site etc.

won't you be quitting when you go to uni anyway? Or are you going to work while you study?

I want to transfer down to work through my first year at least. I can't just quit. I'd go bankrupt :P

Foxtix have taken the first payment out of my account so my ticket purchase must have been successful.

I'm paying it off in 3 monthly payments simply because that was an option and I'm not mentally ready to hand over $840 yet when I feel like I just gave all my money to Malaysia :)

It's so early! I can't get over how early it is!

Last year they planned to sell them this early but they kept extending the date back and back and back until it was about July before they were actually on sale.

I'm not sure what their tactic is, I guess locking people in early is good but I've been stalking a few forums where I know Australian fans hang out just for an idea of the reception and most of them are totally unable to buy them when its only just over a month since they were last here.

  • Amy03/05/2011 at 08:45

even I'm slightly mad at it! Not only is it early, they only give you a 5 day window!

Yeah it's a big expense. I'm still having palpitations over the potential Olympics tickets bill.

Yeah it's a big expense. I'm still having palpitations over the potential Olympics tickets bill.

thats another reason I didn't want them to take all the money in one go, Olympics money will (hopefully) be going on my card in 3 weeks time!

they sent the letters out a few weeks ago, there was plenty of warning.

They gave you one week to book if you wanted to keep the same seats (which we didn't) and then this second week is if you wanted different seats. They go on sale to the general public on Monday so even that is very very early.

I'm sure the general public sale won't go fast, you'll be right. Although, the 4 corners are very popular I guess, don't want to miss out twice :)

that doesn't go hand in hand with the desire to get a 4 corners pass. I see from their Facebook page there is a few people complaining that the wait to get through to Foxtix yesterday was ridiculous. The Aus GP say they underestimated GP Advantage demand.

I definitely unlike Air Asia now. What is the point of a fuel surcharge and why don't you just increase the fare.

people would whine if they put up their "low cost" fares across the board. They can't win either way.

  • Journeyer03/05/2011 at 09:45

I definitely unlike Air Asia now. What is the point of a fuel surcharge and why don't you just increase the fare.

It's standard procedure for budget airlines. It just means fuel prices are too high and they can no longer cover it in their original price. Makes it easier to take out when prices go down again.

  • Alison03/05/2011 at 09:46

people would whine if they put up their "low cost" fares across the board. They can't win either way.

You might well but you're paying the same either way so it's ridiculous not to be able to see the full actual cost up front.

  • Paul03/05/2011 at 09:46

If one airline does it, it'll look more expensive compared to others and less people will buy tickets from them.

  • Paul03/05/2011 at 09:47

No - it looks like they added surcharge, not removed it.

Sorry, I meant the idea is they could take it back out, but that never happens ;-)

  • Amy03/05/2011 at 09:47

You might well but you're paying the same either way so it's ridiculous not to be able to see the full actual cost up front.

I guess it depends, in Australia the law says they have to include that in the cost so if you select a flight, ie, I just randomly chose Melbourne to KL on the 17th of May and it instantly tells you the flight is $439. It's the next page where it says:

    331.00 AUD 1 Guest

    35.00 AUD Fuel Surcharge

73.00 AUD Airport Tax and Fees

so it's not like they're initially telling you the flight is $331 then surprising you with the extra fees later. I guess thats not the law in every country though.

  • Amy03/05/2011 at 09:48

Ha! Someone has taken it out?!

Air Asia have removed it in the past.

Nonetheless, they have recognised that the team’s performance is not at the level that it needs to be and have resigned in order to give the team the opportunity to regroup and undertake the changes necessary to get back to the front of the grid. Mike Coughlan is joining them says Alan Baldwin.

    I'm surprised anyone wants him.

  • Journeyer03/05/2011 at 09:56

Hmmmmmmmmmm I wonder who they have to design for 2012 then

Jon will still design it - that would be ongoing now. Question is - who will provide the updates to the car next year?

Now's a good time to change staff - give them time to bed in before they start designing cars for those new 2013 rules next year.

  • Journeyer03/05/2011 at 09:56

Mike Coughlan is joining them says Alan Baldwin.

    ...WHAT?!

  • Paul03/05/2011 at 09:57

Can I just say - they've REALLY sucked at aero since Newey left.

Yeah I'm actually surprised mclarn didn't fall into a hole after newey as well

  • Amy03/05/2011 at 09:57

    ...WHAT?!

@alanbaldwinf1 Sam Michael and Jon Tomlinson stepping down from their jobs with Williams at end of 2011, Mike Coughlan arriving in June as chief engineer

  • Paul03/05/2011 at 09:57

Mike Coughlan is joining them says Alan Baldwin.

You have got to be kidding

Yeah I'm actually surprised mclaren didn't fall into a hole after newey as well

They had a very good structure with Lowe and Fry. They seem to be very good in transition planning.

  • Amy03/05/2011 at 09:58

it'd probably still be more use than whatever path Williams is on at the moment :D

I'm very used to being the king of a small castle at the moment and I'm being moved somewhere where I'm going to have a lot more input from a line manager basically all the time so it's gonna be a big adjustment.

I'm sure it won't be long before your appointment as King of the big castle :)

    Left at the corner store?

with a Ferrari fan behind the counter...

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/91085

From Coughlan (emphasis mine): "I am grateful to Williams for giving me this opportunity. My experience in 2007 was life-changing. Since then, I have endeavoured to put my skills to good use in the design of the Ocelot vehicle whose purpose is to transport soldiers in safety. I have also enjoyed my time with Michael Waltrip Racing: they are an excellent race team and I wish them well for the future.

"Now, I am looking forward to returning to a sport which I love and to joining a team that I have admired for many years. I will dedicate myself to the team and to ensuring that we return to competitiveness while respecting the ethical standards with which Williams has always been synonymous."

I do NOT want him tarnishing Williams' good name. That's the last thing they need.

  • Journeyer03/05/2011 at 10:08

They may as well bring Symonds on as well.

Nope - he's lined up for Virgin, isn't he?

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/05/2011 at 10:08

Which, admittedly, to this day, is one of the oddest coincidences I've ever heard of in the sport.

reading the Coughlan news I think I should have stayed behing the great firewall of China, sometimes no news is good news ...

Someone on F1F made a good point though - we'll ALL be watching him. Makes it lot less likely he'll try any shenanigans again.

  • RubberGoat03/05/2011 at 10:28

    Bye Bye Williams then.

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 10:29

so, Baldwin says that Adam Parr tried to resign as well but his resignation was not accepted. obviously the team needs at least some continuity

  • Christine03/05/2011 at 10:30

You can probably blame me. I was hoping for news to F1 Minute today. Oops.

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 10:30

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/05/2011 at 10:32

    Bye Bye Williams then.

In all fairness, how much time do they/he have left?

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 10:33

I think more than HRT and Virgin and LRGP in their current guises :-)

  • RubberGoat03/05/2011 at 10:36

In all fairness, how much time do they/he have left?

I think the fact that they have:

    - not designed a decent car for so long,

    - failed to attract sponsors,

    - had to ask for TV Money in advance,

    - had to dump a prodigious talent for a pay driver

    - soiled their reputation by employing a highly visible cheat

    Is very telling.

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 10:40

    - not designed a decent car for so long,

they did but other cars were more decent

    - failed to attract sponsors,

they did not fail to attract sponsors, they attracted sponsors that failed (those Icelanders, RBS ...)

  • RubberGoat03/05/2011 at 10:41

they did but other cars were more decent

    That's a contradiction in terms

they did not fail to attract sponsors, they attracted sponsors that failed (those Icelanders, RBS ...)

    And failed to replace them.

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 10:44

    And failed to replace them.

to be fair there haven't been that many significant brand new sponsor deals even at the sharp end of the F1 grid ... there are that many Bahars ...

there are that many Bahars ...

They made a huge mistake selling title sponsorship without them committing to anything on the car.

    1- Loosing out reveune

2- Putting off other big sponsors

OK, Petronas went to Mercedes who were defending champions at that time and lost their original team

  • Christine03/05/2011 at 11:31

Well, I can only say that it's taken Mr C four days of non-stop coding. Perhaps they are not all as mental dedicated.

Red Bull got Infinity & LG

    Ferrari got Santander

    Mclaren picked up AON

    Mercedees got Petronas

that Santander is part of Alonso package and it isn't really a new sponsor (although new for Ferrari). Red Bull fair enough but as Mercedes the year before they had the world title to show. below that pinacle nothing much is happening on the sponsor front ...

mike coming back must be consider much, much worse. right?

I think espionage is considered a part of F1 whereas trying to turn a race into a pantomime and gaming it is a bit less honerable

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 11:45

depends on what you think is worse - cheating, or race-fixing by forcing someone to crash.

stealing someone else's designs is waay worse in my mind. piquet spun his own car, that's all.

  • Steven Roy03/05/2011 at 11:46

    MR C

Have a look at the Nico Rosberg link in Amanda's daily. It should not be going where it is going

  • Journeyer03/05/2011 at 11:47

either way, let's see if joe will give us his 2 cents later.

on another note, he makes a good point with the job title. any ideas on the identity of the next Williams technical director?

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 11:47

Have a look at the Nico Rosberg link in Amanda's daily. It should not be going where it is going

am at work, but i'm sure christine can do. ta.

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 11:47

stealing someone else's designs is waay worse in my mind. piquet spun his own car, that's all.

piquet spun his own car but he was asked to... and the other 19 or so cars on track were only lucky that piquet hit the wall not another car ...

so stealing may be very bad but at least in that case lives were not in danger ...

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 11:47

stealing someone else's designs is waay worse in my mind. piquet spun his own car, that's all.

What about taking photos then plugging them into autocad? im sure they all do that

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 11:48

so stealing may be very bad but at least in that case lives were not in danger ...

hahaha, piquet's spin didn't even endanger his own life, so weak was it. but okay.

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 11:49

What about taking photos then plugging them into autocad? im sure they all do that

    hmm?

mike had a massive dossier containing ferrari's whole car. hardly the stuff of 'just autocad'.

  • Christine03/05/2011 at 11:49

am at work, but i'm sure christine can do. ta.

    Done.

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 11:49

hahaha, piquet's spin didn't even endanger his own life, so weak was it. but okay.

well, one can never predict where what will fly once car crashes. and spectators are very very close to the track in Singapore

I am not saying that stealing right though ...

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 11:50

hahaha, piquet's spin didn't even endanger his own life, so weak was it. but okay.

    To play devils advocate...

It could have flicked a part onto the track, and if someone hit it before the saftey car was deployed then we could have had a similar incident to massa's

  • Paul03/05/2011 at 11:51

hahaha, piquet's spin didn't even endanger his own life, so weak was it. but okay.

Hmmmmmmmmmm I always considered the piquet thing worse, but you mig be right. Either way, I think it's bad form to ask either coughlan or Symonds back into the fold in a elevated position.

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 11:51

mike had a massive dossier containing ferrari's whole car. hardly the stuff of 'just autocad'.

    True,

Its all the same line of work, but he definatly crossed the line

so mike and pat are back in f1, where will stepney pop up?

  • Paul03/05/2011 at 11:53

so mike and pat are back in f1, where will stepney pop up?

    Not to mention Windsor

Stepney is rather busy at the mo

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 11:53

    Not to mention Windsor

hope so. can't wait to see we'll see how quickly he drops his video thing :)

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 11:54

    Not to mention Windsor

Windsor never made it far enough to get banned. He did only marginally worse than Campos :-)

  • Paul03/05/2011 at 11:54

    Yeah, true

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 11:54

didn't the wmsc ban everyone involved in usf1?

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 11:55

    Not to mention Windsor

Hes hardly compareable, his team just didnt get going.

People get all emotional because it was an american team, but plenty of teams have tried to join in and not got as far as the grid.

He wasnt even on the technical side

  • Matt G03/05/2011 at 11:55

    Allo All,

    lots of comments!!

I only re-read about all this the other week, i think Stepney is German Touring Cars now?

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 11:55

didn't the wmsc ban everyone involved in usf1?

For what? The FIA selected them in the first place!

  • Paul03/05/2011 at 11:55

didn't the wmsc ban everyone involved in usf1?

Did they? For being useless? At least they weren't deliberately cheating

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/05/2011 at 11:55

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 11:56

Wikipedia says the team was banned, i guess that was just the legal entity as they tried to come back as cypher group

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 11:57

    For being useless?

    they weren't useless, they simply weren't :-)

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 11:57

When Dave Richards did the same thing he wasnt banned

  • Matt G03/05/2011 at 11:58

He runs Sumo Racing in GT1

Ahh cool, sorry to misinform, i knew he was around somewhere.

So has anyone speculated the 2013 Willaims will look A LOT like a 2008 Ferrari?

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 11:59

Did they? For being useless? At least they weren't deliberately cheating

well, who does not try anything can't fail. it is hard to kick start any business even on much smaller scale. one always takes risks, hopes for luck and for the right constellation of all the stars ... those who tried know. I know ... ( #lickingwoundsatthemoment )

  • Paul03/05/2011 at 12:01

well, who does not try anything can't fail. it is hard to kick start any business even on much smaller scale. one always takes risks, hopes for luck and for the right constellation of all the stars ... those who tried know

I think it's more about the way they failed.

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 12:01

When Dave Richards did the same thing he wasnt banned

... and he was in similar situation - entered team under certain rules that changed ... (customer cars in his case, budget cap in USF1 case). although it never looked like USF1 would make even if the budget cap remained ...

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 12:03

You have to remember that Windsor wasnt on the technical side he was running the sporting.

Yes he owned part of the entry, but its like patrick head getting involved in strategy decsions

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 12:04

I think it's more about the way they failed.

I think it is more about the way they were selected ... Windsor and his partner (I already forgot his name) had no money of their own to run the team, no funding in hand, not even within the proposed budget cap ... and yet they got the entry ...

  • Journeyer03/05/2011 at 12:06

I think it is more about the way they were selected ... Windsor and his partner (I already forgot his name) had no money of their own to run the team, no funding in hand, not even within the proposed budget cap ... and yet they got the entry ...

Ken Anderson. Not sure how he convinced Bernie, but there ya go.

Wasn't Chad Hurley's name being hurled in the air (pun intended) for a while?

  • Paul03/05/2011 at 12:06

I think it is more about the way they were selected ... Windsor and his partner (I already forgot his name) had no money of their own to run the team, no funding in hand, not even within the proposed budget cap ... and yet they got the entry ...

Well, yes. I do remember it all being a bit messy around the time they went under though.

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 12:07

I think it is more about the way they were selected ... Windsor and his partner (I already forgot his name) had no money of their own to run the team, no funding in hand, not even within the proposed budget cap ... and yet they got the entry ...

I think it was pushed though by Max's american deputy. Everyone thought it was a great idea at the time, but there just didnt prove to be enough interest in F1 in corporate America

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 12:10

It would probably be a good rule if for a team to take part in F1 they had to have x-years motorsport competion under there belt.

Of the 4 new teams Virgin & Lotus did to an extent (Manor & Litespeed)

HRT & USF1 didnt, the difference was HRT got together with Kolles company and USF1 tried to go with Stefan

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 12:10

Wasn't Chad Hurley's name being hurled in the air (pun intended) for a while?

Name being mentioned is very different from cash on the table...

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 12:12

HRT & USF1 didnt, the difference was HRT got together with Kolles company and USF1 tried to go with Stefan

HRT did not get the entry, Campos did and he had the previous experience, just no money for the step up

  • Journeyer03/05/2011 at 12:12

Name being mentioned is very different from cash on the table...

I think there was cash (Hurley hung around to the very end), but it definitely wouldn't have been enough.

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 12:13

I think there was cash (Hurley hung around to the very end), but it definitely wouldn't have been enough.

Not enough cash becomes no cash very quickly :-)

  • Alex Andronov03/05/2011 at 12:13

    Flav?

  • F1Wolf03/05/2011 at 12:15

    Flav?

Flav - he can never be far from trouble :-) #QPR

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 12:18

I think it's more about the way they failed.

    true.

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 12:18

    never said he was.

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 12:23

didn't the wmsc ban everyone involved in usf1?

"USF1 has been fined 309,000 Euros, a sum equivalent to the entry fee for the championship, disqualified them from the right to take part in any competition and claimed costs for execution of the disciplinary procedure."

maybe doesn't apply to individuals then.

  • RubberGoat03/05/2011 at 12:27

I agree with what Rubens was saying about Sam Michael but at the same time, he's had so long to develop in that team and they are going backwards, so maybe a sweeping change is the right thing to do?

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 12:27

You have to remember that Windsor wasnt on the technical side he was running the sporting.

    never said he was.

He was, always referred to as the sporting director with anderson the technical director.

  • RubberGoat03/05/2011 at 12:32

With regard to Coughlan, Flav, Windsor et al...

Coughlan and Flav are cheats. Symonds too. They have been punished but for many reasons they were not life banned. They are perfectly welcome back to F1 in legal terms but in moral terms it cannot look good to be seen to employ such a person.

As for Peter Windsor, he made a big mistake which adversely affected many people. He escaped punishment but surely his actions "cheated" a lot of people? What seems odd is that his journalistic clout in terms of contacts is unaffected. I wouldn't want to see him trying to run an F1 team again because it was clear from the start he was way over his head.

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 12:37

Ken anderson was the one leading the build and the guy who was reported to be team principle:

Seems an interesting juxtaposition that he just got handed over 1% of the share capital in the company and now he is out. That seems very odd.

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 12:39

As i see it Anderson was going to run the team and Technical side with Windsor incharge of racing.

Much like Red Bull are now with horner and newey but the other way around.

  • Journeyer03/05/2011 at 12:39

Seems an interesting juxtaposition that he just got handed over 1% of the share capital in the company and now he is out. That seems very odd.

Very odd indeed. Either that was a payoff, or the team will kindly ask it back from Sam now.

  • Steven Roy03/05/2011 at 12:40

Windsor cheated himself as much as anyone else. The difference between him and the others is he was too stupid to see the problems the rest of us could tell existed from videos and photos.

He was so stupid he still hasn't launched a toaster

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 12:41

    Windsor was team principal.

You don't need to be technically qualified to realise that you have made no cars and very few car bits.

Both of them are equally to blame

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 12:42

Seems an interesting juxtaposition that he just got handed over 1% of the share capital in the company and now he is out. That seems very odd.

the timing of the floatation was all a bit odd wasn't it? the must have know the car was hopeless and spent the whole of testing running it super-light.

  • Steven Roy03/05/2011 at 12:43

Very odd indeed. Either that was a payoff, or the team will kindly ask it back from Sam now.

They can't ask for it back. They may have a clause in his contract where the company has the right to buy back shares or they may have negotiated it as part of his package.

  • Steven Roy03/05/2011 at 12:43

    i want one!

I still think had they made them at the time they would have sold tens of thousands

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 12:45

    Windsor was team principal.

Not according to whenever they released a statement or did an interview. It was always Ken Anderson, Team Principle and Peter Windsor, Sporting Director.

I'm not saying he was without blame as he was an owner, but Ken Anderson seems to me to be more at fault, and get next to no criticism, whereas windsor gets it all

  • Steven Roy03/05/2011 at 12:45

the timing of the floatation was all a bit odd wasn't it? the must have know the car was hopeless and spent the whole of testing running it super-light.

There is a very old saying in racing that when the green flag drops (to start a race) the bull**** stops. The modern version seems to be to throw out as much bull as possible in pre-season testing.

  • Steven Roy03/05/2011 at 12:47

I'm not saying he was without blame as he was an owner, but Ken Anderson seems to me to be more at fault, and get next to no criticism, whereas windsor gets it all

Anderson has no profile so doesn't get much grief. At the time both were blamed but most people have already forgotten his name. Regardless of jobs the thing to remember is Windsor was team manager at both Williams and Ferrari so he was the one who was supposed to know how to run a racing team.

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 12:47

I'm not saying he was without blame as he was an owner, but Ken Anderson seems to me to be more at fault, and get next to no criticism, whereas windsor gets it all

anderson did the right thing and took his business elsewhere. if he turned up with an f1 talk show and declared 'i'm baaaack, so err, let's never mention usf1 again', i'd be berating him on twitter just as much.

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 12:47

It would be more like blaming the team captain if the stadium got repossessed, when you should be looking at the finance director/CEO

Here's a bit from a comment from me back in January:

But you might also do it, and this is my guess as to the reason, to get the founders out of the company with a suitable amount of money for them.

    http://sidepodcast.com/post/f1-debrief-im-lovin-it/comments#comment-1010063

I may have got the "who" wrong. Perhaps they gave Sam a part of the company previously and to let him go they would have had to found the cash. So the float was to let that happen?

  • Steven Roy03/05/2011 at 12:55

...and then quickly float your company.

    do tell.

  • Steven Roy03/05/2011 at 13:06

For me that shows that windsor cares about the sport and wants to be involved in it whilst his business partner was just in it for the cash?

Ken Anderson has spent his whole life in motor racing and I assume he still is. He just does not have a high profile and is not involved in F1 in any obvious capacity.

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/05/2011 at 13:08

    do tell.

They were doing the "26 drivers that should have been in F1" episode, with the F1 circuit commentator and some other historian and they came to a story about a driver that didn't really race, but ended up with a team for a short while.

Windsor remarked that the team was short-lived and his guest countered with something along the lines of "they got slightly further than your team"

It was a moment that made me go "oooooooohhh..." and for a moment Windsor was taken aback before continuing as if nothing had happened.

    :D

For me he takes way to long to get started then he has a sort of grovelling manner with his guests. On one show he was 8 minutes in and still doing introductions. He only has an hour so that amount of wasted time is ridiculous.

Its is very slow, i only watch the race recaps. it also seems to work beter with people in the studio rater than on skype as both parties tend to go off on completly uneeded tangents

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 13:22

tangents can be good, but in the case of his show they tend to loose track of everything for the sake of them

They mentioned that in the commentary. It's very scary that his arm was outside the cockpit with all those cars flying around. Very lucky to have only bruised his thumb. He could easily have lost an arm

Jake blogs about the flypast fail: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/tv/2011/05/royal-wedding-buckingham-palace-flypast.shtml

Despite delivering my lines three times, things conspired against us and we weren't able to deliver what would have been an epic part of the BBC's royal wedding coverage, much to my frustration and sadness.

Yet, at the same time, I was on the crest of a wave after being privileged to spend 24 hours in the company of some incredible people and some equally impressive feats of British engineering.

If that is new to people does that mean tractor pulling is too? I know you are all thinking low tech if you have never seen it but some of those 'tractors' have more engines than an F1 car gets through in a season and I have seen them fitted with multiple helicopter turbine engines.

I just think its a bit anarchic to go around having to plug things into sync them up. if it has wifi why on earth cant it do it itself. hopefully it will be resolved in the near future

  • Pat W03/05/2011 at 16:54

I dont really bother. Last time i connected it to copy the f1timing app over it messed up the lock button on the side.

Turned it into a mute button? That annoyed me so much. Apparently they've changed it back now. I'm not sure I trust them not to have screwed with something else. :)

Check out ivi pro... It's really neat... And inexpensive. It automatically adds the art work and the title etc from IMDB and puts it into iTunes for you automagically.

Shame you have to plug it in to give it power. The wire is still much faster than wifi. If they do bring out wireless syncing too soon people will only complain about how slow it is!

unusually i agree with nick. it's not a post-pc era while you still have to plug it in. but then i don't believe it's a post-pc era anyhow.

I dont mind doing that! nothing goes wrong when its just power!

I wouldnt mind them getting rid of scyncing all together. Have a way to wirelessly send stuff from your ipad to your iphone, download firmware and updates straight to the device would be great.

At the moment it thinks an ipad is the same as my mp3 player from 1999

  • Alex Andronov03/05/2011 at 17:00

eg. sit at Apple TV choose library select movie press play.

  • Bassano03/05/2011 at 17:01

eh... Rip -> iTunes. Stream to Apple TV...

That is an option. Or I could plug a wireless dongle into the media player and stream over my network

fair enough, i coudn't be without it now. so much easier to find content on youtube on my desktop and just beam it to the telly. searching with a tv remote is dreadful.

  • Lukeh03/05/2011 at 17:10

Presumably somewhere along the way, they'll figure out how to get the full TV shows on the iPad too. I'm assuming it is the adverts that are restricting it now, but then we'll have all 4OD type stuff via Airplay too.

  • Mr C03/05/2011 at 17:30

I recorded it on my phone which allowed me to upload it straight to YouTube and then watch it back on the TV :) or just watch it back on the tv without having to wait

    the future is now :)

Alex, have you found the iPad 2 to be a significant upgrade?

I notice Safari still reloads when switching tabs :(

Virgin Media have just launched a TiVO box that lets you watch anything on in the last week, regardless of you remembering to record it

that's handy, but sidepodcast isn't on virgin media, so you're restricted to 'big corp' content only.

YouTube aren't just going to flick a switch and run the content they're already streaming? Better for them surely.

  • Alex Andronov03/05/2011 at 17:36

Alex, have you found the iPad 2 to be a significant upgrade?

I like it... The weight is a big difference for me and the ability to really easily remove the case.

  • Nick03/05/2011 at 17:37

I wonder if the networks will hand over the power to YouTube and therefore, Google

    Advertisers wouldnt allow it.

Google bought a company which was going to create an adwords style marketplace for radio ads, but it got blocked because google owned it

Now if you are thinking to yourself... Oh yes that's all very well and good... but I could just fast forward to the right point in the movie... then... Stick around for about 5 minutes and I'll demo something really cool

I know people who would make very good use of that, if it had moving parts they'd wear 'em out. ;) If I didn't have an IPTV system already or a desire to put non-Apple-sourced stuff on it (as I assume you're still locked into their universe), would be worth considering, cost aside..

See that's the thing... the content on AppleTV is slightly limited and so unless you can get the content somewhere else it might not be the replacement you need.

Right, and if it is linked to the iTunes store (?) there's things like the rental/purchase timings which many here dislike. The thing with BTV though is it also goes in cycles, your show might be up for 3 or 6 months but the next series may not appear for a while, or if you get delayed and it is removed, that's it.. you've got to wait 3 months again or it might've gone completely.

I'm loath to say that £101 is not very much money, because obviously it is, but I would feel better saying, "Get the Apple TV for these other really neat features and then work out if you can cancel your content subscription".

It is a lot less than I expected and only £22 over the WD device Bassano linked to (versions of which I'd been eyeing for some time). Being Apple I naturally assumed it would be double, or something. :)

I guess if I have to do any exams in the near future, I'll keep my phone in my bag or something

If they are doing their job properly they'll insist on it, and bags at the front of the room, else phone on their desk. You could easily change to silent mode and text someone, they can't check 30 odd people at once.

If you sit GCSEs or A Levels now, phones are not even allowed in the room. Not turned off, not in your bag, just not in the room. I mean they're not going to notice it switched off in your bag at the front but if they did, you could be disqualified.

(I'm sure disqualified isn't the word for that, it feels wrong)

it's not that though. it's the ability to connect components across massive distances. your machine doesn't even need to be in the same neighbourhood, let alone the same room.

forget speed. the breakthrough is distance.

imagine being able to use your office desktop at home. not dial-in across the internet and see the screen, but actually see the screen via a cable.

if everyone goes home at night, i could use all the office machines as a big old render farm. the distances are massive, it'll change desktop computing a lot i reckon.

we don't have an ipad2 sadly. so not seen it yet, was curious what you thought.

I think there's a hack for it but it's not perfect

  • Alex Andronov03/05/2011 at 18:45

The biggest problem I have with the interface is a way of thinking about clip editing which is backwards. I was to move through the clip with the red line showing where I am and advance to exactly the right frame and then say split the clip here. But that doesn't seem to be the way to do it. You have to pull the end of the clip in to the point... But when you pull the clip end in it moves the red line to the end of the clip so you can see the final frame of the whole clip.

What they obviously want you to do is drag back to the right moment watching the video and if you've never edited video before that is probably more intuitive but it's still weird for me.

  • Bassano03/05/2011 at 18:46

One of their staff has gone off on long-term sick yesterday. I knew about that. They were short staffed before that happened and are now very very short. They need bodies on the ground that can get on with things without needing their hand holding/training etc.

    Sounds temporary then

Well my current site needs to recruit immediately to replace me so I'm not sure I'll have room to go back. As I said, my manager was in tears telling me, it's going to leave us that short. essentially i want ipad apps for all my software and for them to run as a touch surface to augment the mouse (like a massive trackpad). that way you use the mouse for detailed mousey things and fingers for anything else.

Yup. We'll get the new cars and engines but the bodykits will have to wait. That's not good, part of the fun was going to be seeing the teams try and understand both car and kits at once. Now they'll know the cars in advance.

Why does American Single Seater racing never learn from it's own history? The sport ripped itself to pieces twice because the team owners got too powerful and dictated the rules.
