Ladies and Gentlemen, so begins one of the best weeks on the sporting calendar. Oh my word, it is impossible not to love it. There's something for everyone, some say it may even be too much, but you know what, I don't care. So I hear you say, what makes the week starting on 4th April so darn awesome, well...
- Formula 1 is in Malaysia. Will Vettel be dominant again? Can Ferrari find some pace? Will Hispania actually qualify?
- IndyCar from Alabama. Will Franchitti get 2 out of 2? Will Sato finally do the inevitable and crash?
- NASCAR from Texas. Thats a bit meh to be honest.
- Champions League Quarter Finals. Can Tottenham do the unthinkable in Madrid? Can Schalke do anything in Milan? How many will Barca win by? Who is better between Manchester United and Chelsea?
- Masters from Augusta. Will Mickleson keep the green jacket? Can any of the Europeans get the glory? Will Tiger make the cut? Can I stay awake until early Monday morning on a school night to watch it all?
- The Grand National in Aintree. Who'll get who in the sweepstakes? Can Don't Push It push it? Will anyones teeth be shown again?
- Start of the Indian Premier League in, er, India. Can those cricketers hit some sixes? Will they come to the conclusion that all they ever seemingly do is play cricket? Will anyone care after four weeks after just realising its only cricket?
- End of the NHL in North America. Who will get into the playoffs? Will anyone on Sidepodcast really care?
And breathe. That is just astronomical, full of awesomeness and realisation there is little chance of me getting much done this week. Stupid sport. So what else is happening in the past 24 hours?
Formula 1... oh have a guess.
In MotoGP there was a fantastic race in wet conditions in Barcelona, with Jorge Lorenzo ultimately coming out on top. There were a few spills along the way and no doubt plenty of drama. Elsewhere there was the start of the BTCC and probably some NASCAR too, to the happiness of football writer Jonathan Wilson.
Speaking of said sport which goes round and round, Kimi Raikkonen is actually racing in it this season, with his ultimate aim of competing in every top level racing series around the world by 2015 (Poole Pirates for 2013, I tells ya).
In football, Spurs continue to have run ins with a cow and a barn door, Manchester United look just too good, Arsenal bottle it... again and other results happened. In shocking and unprecedented news, Jose Mourinho lost a game at home, this comes after 150 games and over nine years of league games without defeat, covering teams such as Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid. Whitley Bay are in the FA Vase Final for the third year in a row (but their U17s came to an unexpected 1-0 defeat to the hands of my team). And in 'Yes that Actually Did Happen, This Isn't Fake and Totally Real' moment of the week, a statue of Michael Jackson was unveiled outside of Craven Cottage, the home of football team Fulham, and to make matters even stupider, its totally rubbish.
In the sport of cricket, they actually finished the World Cup!!! Sensational scenes could be found in India after 6 long weeks the cricket was finally over and no longer on the television screens. At least, thats what I thought they were cheering about, surely it wasn't because they had won it?
In other British stuff, Nottingham Panthers won the Elite League Ice Hockey. Speedway finally got under way after a long winter of disputes and arguments and greed which makes Bernie Ecclestone seem like a generous, charitable figure.
And in Sidepodcast stuff, do check out the latest bundle of Big Pictures, including one of everyone's new hero Sergio Perez (cue failures at the next few races). Of course Giggles Radio was back in style with 1982, only two more years until I can make a George Orwell joke. And a look at the new F1 timing app which you can use on your iPads, which for some reason people want to actually buy.
So, that is Monday. Enjoy Monday. Monday is cool if you are cool with it.
hello Monday! I like that for the next six months you will show up when I start work
Awww you're making me all sad I can't get a big hat on and head down for Ladies Day RG
Epic sports week!
bassano, to answer your comment from yesterday's thread. haven't looked at the vimeo app, the ipod is just too small for people with normal sized fingers. imovie is better now, but you need a lot of patience.
Have you seen these recent posts on sidepodcast.com?
- Daily: 4th April 2011
- F1 on the iPad - Soft Pauer Timing App
- Live: Giggles Radio - 1982

Not tried for iPad then?
Guess you use Final Cut rather than iMovie on the Mac
imovie requires ipad2 sadly.
too right. can't fathom imovie for nuttin' :)
that is quite a lot of sport.
cheers for the daily RG, i shall enjoy monday :)
Maybe iPhone 4 then, am interested to see if what I have in mind is achievable
Booooo airline nonsense!!!
Best sleep..goodnight
What's up?
G'night Pat
Good night Pat
I'm irritated. When I booked my ticket, KLM said they'd match my Emirates frequent flier status but I've just got an email saying the offer of that expired 31st March. It's only lounge access while I transfer really but I'd kill for a priority luggage tag!?!
It doesn't take a lot to set me off :P
I tend to work on a tight time schedule though and I had to RUN to catch the last train home last time I flew because my bags took too long :(
trick is to fly without them. Or, just allow yourself more time :D
These are good options.
buying my carry on sized bag is the best thing i've ever done. i may never need to wait for luggage ever again :)
Nonono! More time?? Madness! You lose a whole day's holiday... I think they should just give me priority bag tags like they said they would.
if you're losing a whole days holiday because you have to wait an extra 5 minutes for your bag you're doing it wrong :D
I still had my priority tags on from Prague but they also tagged my second bag and Janna's.
Plan for sucky lateness, benefit from it not always being that way
Is indeed an epic week ahead - And yes, I do happen to care about the NHL - yet tired of watching my Dallas Stars dive deeper into the abyss by choking away the playoffs ... (great stats site BTW) -
http://playoffstatus.com/nhl/starsstandings.html
Brilliant job today (Sunday) by my all-time fave, Mr. Phil Mickelson - Hoping he can pull off yet another green jacket this coming week (which reminds me, why do you lot not place a "." period after "Mr"?? - Always wondered that... well, that and "maths" vs. "math" LOL)
NASCAR bores me to tears... (left, left, left!) Though Texas is my official "home"... And usually a good/fast race...
SupeRugby this week was pretty good :) Go Blues! (and Crusaders) - Miffed at these "alternate sites" being played at down under though... sigh...
Saw the French are offering Dan C. $4M+ to come back and play? Yikes! He said last week he was focused on the disaster in Christchurch first - We'll see if these 4 million reasons have him thinking otherwise? :( Most of the stars have yet to renew their All Blacks contracts... This has me concerned, as I will be in NZ for 5 weeks in NOV to pull for my A/B's ...
Speaking of Apps - I did find a way to get the UK ones to load here - But in doing so, found this one too that seems quite good (news/free oh-ay!) from ESPN assuming it hasn't been listed here yet, is quite good for the iPhone:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/espnf1/id424024870?mt=8
FWIW, I saw the new prototype/concept for the 'new' next-gen Indy Cars.... May be just enough to bring me back to the sport (we advertize in the "lite" series) - and saw it thru one of our graphic artists... Pretty cool stuff :)
Wow, ramble ramble - can you tell I'm bored? Only baseball on tonight :( sigh... Masters in 3 days - Malaysia (of course!) - NCAA final - NHL Playoffs - We don't get cricket here :( ManU look to have a lock on everyone...
Night!
BTW, saw Prague being bantered around... Will be there for 4 weeks in SEPT if anyone is interested in doing a meet-up .... or in the USA ... or in NZ during the RWC :)
Great time this weekend deserves a great sleep tonight for work tomorrow.
Good night everyone
Night Kai, sleep well
Good night Kai. :)
BLOODY HELL YES !!!! Them's fighting words to this Red-Blooded Habs (Montreal Canadiens) fan, RG!
My team has to hold off Buffalo, New York, Carolina but Toronto should be a piece of cake for the next three games to ensure a playoff berth....
8.End of the NHL in North America. Who will get into the playoffs? Will anyone on Sidepodcast really care?
Montreal needs to win 1 game out of three to ensure a playoff spot.
Can't wat for Malaysia ! :D I really hope that a few more teams can make a run at Red Bull. I really hope Renault continues there strong performence. But, I just can't wait for the race weekend ! IndyCar...hmmm, fell off that bandwagon about a year or two ago.. Nascar = mehhhhh (agree with you there) , Masters, dont really follow golf and same with Grand Nationals. Indian Premier League, dont even know what that is ! Finally, the NHL, (I am probably the only one on Sidepodcast who likes it, me being Canadian in all :P ) .. Can't wait for the playoffs to start, hope Crosby will be back in the Penguins line up soon, go Penguins and Blackhawks ! Can't wait for Malaysia ! :D
Wilman, with three Canadian teams close buy, why Chicago ?
ooh 3 new entrants in the competition.
goodness! When does it close?
this was a tough weekend. watched cricket for the very first time ever. and with not much to do for 7+ hours the hangover on Sunday was pretty bad. at least I could sample probably the hottest vindaloo ever
7 days! 7 long scary days!
some entries are quite sad, the only person liking the picture is the person in the picture ...
hope it does not work like ebay auctions where all the real activity starts in the final minute of bidding ...
thats what i've developed a paranoia about, what if someone has 90 friends magically waiting all to like it on the last day! noooo!
some haven't even made it that far, one of the instructions was to tag yourself and plenty haven't.
Amy:
By my count you are to 241.....
my phone still says 231
I know that you have at least 10 reserves.....
ooh mysterious. i have a helper in the office who will harrass everyone here who hasn't done it in my absense :)
See. I know of this since the FIRST time you decided to bug your poor long-suffering co-workers...
one of my friends thought I should take my iPad to Sepang and get people at the track to sign in on it then like me. I am not willing to go that far. plus rain + ipad = bad.
if you have 10 up your sleeve too that'd be great ;)
Well, I guess I can bug my co-Tundraland namesake, Mr. Wilman... and my cuz as they are on facebook... but you seems to have tapped pretty much everyone in Sidepodcastland .... twice!
sidepodcast has more lurkers, i just know it does :)
Theres still lots of people on my facebook who haven't joined in (the i went to school with you but havent spoken to you in years crowd) but I'm sure a few more pleads might help a little.
Heck. He's the "Western Jordan" that, well lives on the Western side of the country, Anyway, it has been sent off to him.
:) thanks
Why not milk the fact that you where the "#SorryAmy" known thoughtout the internet from Kovie's MacLaren days... ?
I still remember those videos making fun of USF1 attempts to build a factory and a car.
... and they were made using this I believe - http://www.xtranormal.com/ - does not look too difficult :-)
I just remember the animal representing Peter Windsor trashing Kovie, then breaking the fourth wall to say "SorryAmy...."
Ahhhh, the good old days before KERS when Kubica was awesome. With KERS I really found myself a lone voice in the forest rooting for Bobby K.
Well, night everyone. I have an afternoon shift tomorrow.
Jordan F1 , well sir, my favorite player Jonathan Toews is on the team, that is why

heh I'd forgotten about #sorryAmy!
I was going to remind you but I forgot
#sorryAmy ;)
Does your mobile support wifi? That can work too. :D
yes but an ipad is much easier to facebook on than a phone
But even if you don't bring your iPad, you can still get your new-found friends to like it if they really want to. Hehehe. :D
you are commenting early today!
i don't see myself making new friends, i don't talk to strangers!
fair enough. :) have you figured out how to go from the hotel to the track?
I'm seeing articles that Pirelli are getting di Grassi to replace de la Rosa at Pirelli. They seem to be the first port of call for unemployed F1 drivers now.
Morning. Hopefully that means that he will get back into a race team then ;)
Maybe its because he signed back up for McLaren?
Yup, that's pretty much the reason why.
we're going to taxi on Friday and if we decide that sucks we'll post something else for Saturday Sunday. Mr getty photographer said traffic isn't too bad from Putrajaya its only really bad between the track and KL itself
Are you sitting in a grandstand or will you be joining in the hill divers if it rains?
grandstand. It was only $100!
Joe thinks F1 may be on its way to Qatar: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/04/04/a-grand-prix-for-qatar/
On the plus side its s shorter flight for me than bahrain. But a visit visa would cost me 20squids
the big V one? If it is take pics of the middle, it always looks awesome on TV :D
If they really need a second GP in the Middle East, Qatar is it.
But I don't think they need 2 races there. Abu Dhabi is more than enough.
And on another note, how sad that the last-ever Bahrain GP will have been run on that extended layout - one of the worst races of all time. And that was to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Formula One, too...
To be fair F1 never made a huge amount of sense in Bahrain. The only reason it went there is because Dubai fell out with Bernie and he had promised the teams and sponsors a race in the Gulf
And they already have it with Abu Dhabi. So why bother with Qatar?
we'll check that out on Friday as you can sit anywhere but our tickets are for the fiddly first turns bit
I have no idea. But then again they did buy the world cup.
Everyone in the gulf wants to be Dubai. the problem is Dubai is already here.
If it does go, i would prefer a street circuit in Doha to Losail
Yet F1 isn't there. Hmmm.
I'm open to that idea - not so keen on the current circuit. If MotoGP has boring races there, what chance does F1 have?
None!
Exactly.
I like Nick's idea of a street race I suppose. I don't see why we need to go to Qatar, but I suppose if they actually want a Grand Prix at least it's a start!
It will also be fun to hear how everyone pronounces it :)
morning all
one of the reasons why the MotoGP looks so dull in Qatar is the night race ... even if there are people in the grandstands (which I doubt there are :-) ) they are blocked by the light/dark wall separating the track from the surrounding areas
Can F1 please go somewhere where people not money men care about it ?
Bernie says no. :D
How do you pronounce it?
1973?
Ka-tar?
Gahhhh....
A1GP was pretty poor in Qatar - what would F1 have?
Is it KATarr, katARR or kutARR?
Wouldn't it need to be earlier? Something like 1966.
Their flag-bearer airline pronounces it KATarr.
Dunno. I just picked an old year out of the top of my head. But I suppose you could say that since the cars started running sponsorship, F1 has become more and more about the money...
Should we blame Gold Leaf and Lotus for that then? :D
Absolutely not. And not Bernie either. The whole sport fell too much in love with money and it's too far down the debit hole to pull back now.
I'm not sure I totally buy that - surely Grand Prix racing has always been about money and selling cars since day one?
Thing is, it's not just motorsport - it's an issue professional sport has as a whole.
For the manufacturers, yes - the Ferraris, Maseratis, and Mercedes. But not for the privateers - the Lotuses, the McLarens, and the Tyrrells.
Indeed. It's just not possible to be a privateer anymore without big bucks - whereas there was a point where Mr. Tyrrell, Mr. Wolf or Mr. Williams could be successful on smaller budgets than the big car manufacturers...
Not sure I'd agree about Lotus or McLaren. Back in the day, Lotus would try to sell cars off the back of their success, while McLaren have had a road car programme for over 20 years
Gavin came up with better examples than me in Wolf and Williams. :D
McLaren are a lot older than 20 years though. After Bruce died they had a real struggle to stay alive until they got Marlboro cash.
Can't see any of the new teams being able to last that long and get a big sponsorship like that.
But this is F1, and about the pinnacle of motor sports technology. You can probably blame mclaren or lotus for really kicking off the technology and money race in the late 70 early 80s
I think the more restrictive the rules became, the more it became necessary to spend money to find the smallest of advantages in the tiniest of loopholes. It became a lot harder to think of innovative ideas because there were so many restrictions in the rules
The smartbthinking around loopholes comes from people, and they will cost thevsame regardless. Things are more expensive now because of the technology. Carbon rather than aluminum, personal wind tunnels, cfd computers. That's life, you can't turn back technology.
Exactly. With less loopholes, it's become an optimization race. How can you refine technology to be as good as it is? And to do that, you need more of the money rather than brains.
But surely what you really need isnthe brains - Adrian newey? The three teams behind rbr all have more money.
The thing about F1 is that having a lot of money is no guarantee for success, but not having a lot of money is a guarantee for failure.
And Adrian Newey is also being paid a lot, IIRC.
Just ask Honda and Toyota...
yes, but one still needs enough money to implement ideas of people like Newey, or better, to keep implementing the ideas as the season progresses. Red Bull may not need as much money as Toyota was burning (maybe) but sure needs much more than Lotus or Virgin or HRT have available at the moment
Well yeah, that's the point I guess.
Could be worse - could be yacht racing!
I think Honda Brawn Mercedes is a good example. Lots of Honda money spent on championship winning car that raced as Brawn. But the car that started as class of the field became just one of the front runners by the mid season once the money dried up and staff was made redundant. and consequences of that can be still seen today. just look at the gap Red Bull developed from being second or so behind Brawn at the start of 2009 to being almost 2 secs ahead two season later ...
Exactly. So F1 is all about the money now.
I would not say all about the money but about the right amount of money. there simply is some minimum amount necessary to be at the front of the field in the long term
Yup. $100 million plus.
Um, but without newey, rbr would not be where they are. In 2009, red bull would have beaten brawn without the double diffuser. The technology determines the winner, the money applies it.
But even the R&D requires money.
Yes,
I'm not quite sure what point I'm trying to make here :-)
yes of course, but if all the money you have are spent on R&D then you do not have much left to produce new wing for every two races, different exhaust 3 times a year etc etc.
but look at Williams - they do the R&D and it seems it has become source of income for them ...
Well they have to make their money from somewhere I suppose!
of course, but that is the way, they invest into the R&D so they may as well make some money out of it.
problem teams like Lotus or Force India have is they are buyers of the technology, not the once creating it. so they need to raise funds to buy, they have nothing to sell (other than race seat and space on the car or in the paddock)
Agreed. It's a vicious cycle.
on the other hand, I believe selling technology is rather new thing for Red Bull too, if I am not wrong the deal with Lotus is their first supply deal with other F1 team (not counting STR).
On a sidenote, it was very, very sad to hear about Gustavo Sondermann's crash last night - what on earth were they doing racing in those conditions?
interesting experience today. I came to the bank to see if I they have Vietnamese dongs. I had to repeat I think 5 times the country name and at the end had to write it down on paper for the lady behind the counter. she had no clue. Vietnam, place that is about an hour flight away from here ... and this is HSBC, not some tiny little bank at the corner ...
Oh dear...
I hate to say I have never heard of the poor bloke but it was an awful crash. No doubt at some point they will be forced to change that corner.
I've no real problem with the corner, because it is relatively slow - however those conditions were beyond insane.
Not far off Malaysia '09 monsoon conditions. Just crazy, absolutely crazy.
I thought they were the world's local bank? :D
Yeah I couldn't see much so I would have hated to have been driving in those conditions...
At which corner did the crash occur?
The one where Alonso crashed. Joe has a great post on it: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/04/04/safety-at-interlagos/
It might need something similar to what they have on the Indy banking.
unfortunately sometime they hire very locally focused employees
anyway, off to Hanoi tomorrow, can't wait for proper dose of the best coffee in the world
Wasn't the technology developed at Super Aguri but they didn't have the budget to implement it?
From what I understand, they came up with the idea, but I'm not sure they ever got to develop the technology for it due to lack of budget.
they no longer had a team, let alone a budget :)
interesting reading how the only way Germany is now preventing power blackouts following anti nuclear power actions of last weeks is import of power from France and Czech Republic, countries where majority of power is generated how ? in nuclear power plants ...
this green hypocrisy is obviously not limited to F1 only ...
That's quite a lack of budget... Like roadrunner running off the edge of the cliff...
(but different from Team USA when they had a toaster sliding off a cliff)
Ping: http://mrschristine.com/2011/04/04/film-watch-124-field-of-dreams/
if you build it he will come...
Always makes me think of Waynes World 2
I say 'Cat Are'
The Khaleeji (Gulf) proncounciation is more like 'Gutter'
Second lot of F1 Big Picture pings begin: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/riding-in-cars-with-boys
Morning guys
Yay!
Loving these big picture specials :)
It'll be a bit more sporadic today, but we will get the whole grid done!
Bundle here: http://bit.ly/dTlDTA (and in the daily) if that's easier to keep track of.
Today will be mostly cloudy with occasional bursts of F1 Big Pictures :)
Partly cloudy?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CojRPtwTCvM
More Doctor Who wowsers: http://blogtorwho.blogspot.com/2011/04/bbc-america-behind-scenes.html
Wooooooooooow. Looks so awesome.
The spaceship from The Lodger is back too it seems.
I am nervous about Amy's secret.
Hello all. Bassano just dropped me at Clapham & I'm waiting for my train. Sad my lovely holiday is over but looking forward to my bed. International travel, eating & drinking is hard. ;)
Seems to just pop up randomly in there but I have no idea. Maybe she is really David Tennant
It's tough being an international jet setter but somebody's got to do it!
eeek!
I hope your flight was good.
Hello, the time stamp looks correct. I must be home :D
I'm just getting up. Long trip for you guys.
Yeah, well we were still in the pub when you got home
Staying out of the sun, is that believable? Yes, that's what it was
oh yes, staying out of the sun.... :)
Good flight I hope?
Yes, could have done with it being a bit longer to be honest, to get more sleep but shouldn't moan.
How's that kidnapping plan coming along, 'cause I really don't want to go to work today.
You should carry on with your normal routine so as not to arouse suspicion
mm, oh yes, good idea.
Time for shower, then.
Time for work. Boo. I'd rather be in Boston with Janna and Bassano.
Me too. Have a good day Kai
They have cut the speed limit between dubai and abu dhabi from 100mph to 87.
Trips to Yas will take much longer...
That's a bit mean... if you were in Boston wouldn't you rather be with Janna and Kai rather than Janna and a copy of yourself... Although I admit meeting a copy of yourself would be pretty cool.
I dunno - Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart met himself in Mawdryn Undead and it did him no good at all.
yay for McLaren!
"Since I sent out my invitation to you on Friday, some members have contacted me to say they are unable to attend the paddock tour. Rather than waste the passes, I wondered if you’d like to bring a guest?"
Pamela gets to come tooooo
Now that is ace!!
Man you guys are so lucky :)
boo at all the people who apply for tours then can't go when the terms and conditions clearly state that you have to have Friday tickets for the race.
POINTS! :D
Funny thing is, there are NO Friday tickets for Sepang. It's open to everyone.
Really?
thats even worse then! They say if you apply for a tour for a race that you dont have tickets to then you'll be ineligible from tours for the rest of the season.
Yup - anyone and everyone can go. It's an effort to get a good crowd to go.
Sweet
the odd thing is they don't seem to publicise that fact though which would help. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere this year.
:D
I'm a bit jet lagged but that still made me laugh
ohhhhhh Andy Hone is working for LAT this year apparently.. yaay!
hi all!
Woohoo. Go mclaren dude. I'm sure it was me wording him up.
100% positive that was it :D
afternoon :)

oh my goodness me.. you two are so so lucky! Have an amazing time. Am expecting thousands of guest posts!
Hello Lou, newcommers
Did he adress it to "a girl Paul knows"? :-)
haha no, it was a group email sent to a whopping four people. Judging by the others email addresses they're all British.
Big turn out then. Should give you a good chance to check everything out!
I wonder how many people pulled out of the chance.
Don't forget to point to the hospitality. "what's in there then?". :-)
But you two are experts now
My brother said I shouldn't be the Lotus uber-fan because I tart myself around other teams. :D
Hehehehehe
How will mclaren react to a lotus and A Ferrari fan?!
You're a Heikki uber-fan. That's close enough. :D
In world news, I'm so happy they've found apparently found part of the Air France plane that crashed a couple of years back. I think the scariest part of air crashes is when they never find them.
and because I know Lotus aren't actually going to win anything this year I still actively support Lewis to win every round. The Kiwi in me is still a McLaren fan :D
and I turned down an invite to watch Australia v Ukraine Fed Cup tennis because its on the same weekend as the Chinese Grand Prix and because thats only a 2 hour difference its on in the middle of the day. F1>Social life has begun for 2011 :)
Its just like LOST
Oh SU... I am now certainly feeling guilty... I still haven't read the F1 on the iPad - F1 Racing post and that's about to fall off the list! And I haven't read the Soft Pauer one either because I didn't want to read them out of order. But I have read today's daily even though that's kind of out of order and I wrote the Giggles Radio one so I haven't really read it but I probably don't really have to? Or do you think I should?
Giggles Update:
I have read the F1 on the iPad - F1 Racing Magazine article now... phew
Hello all, home safe, lemon & ginger tea brewing. Would love to be back in Boston with Kai, Bassano & Copy of Bassano ;)
I already have a zinio account. How about that. Maybe I really should try put that F1 racing mag.
I got a paper one in the mail today. Boo Haymarket!
Giggles Update:
I am up to date with everything good ol' SU has been mentioning :)
They have a whole magazine about watches. Bizarre!
#notmfc
Don't they know you have an iPad now?
Don't they know I wanted to cancel my subscription months ago and never asked for it to auto renew and don't want to ring them because phones suck? :D
The more the merrier.
For Amy: http://www.connectedthebook.com/
I'm reading it right now - it's kinda heavy but very interesting. It's about the power and effect of social networks...
This title is not available for customers from:
Australia
noooooooo!
Awww :(
Is New Zealand ok though?
I doubt it :)
I had a momentary 'what about iBooks' moment but its not available on the Australian store there either.
Maybe they couldnt work out a way to make an upside down version for your hemishpere?
Aww jeez that's Terrible!
:D
Just try waiting 1500 - 1600 years and try making that joke again :)
Then you'll be laughing on the other side of your planet...
Now i am very confused!
the only response i can think of is... "Planets are spherical, they dont have sides!"
Magnetic north and south swap over every so often.
Well that's Gavin's point they don't have tops or bottoms either...
The poles reverse however from time to time and at the moment the magnetic field is changing at a rate that means that in the next 1500 to 1600 years we might expect the poles to reverse.
Wow - you only got yours 4 days after me and I'm a UK subscriber...
they dont come from the UK though, its the Australian version.
Silly non-page 22 including version you mean ;)
exactly :(
our cover doesn't have 'Frank Williams writes exclusively for F1 Racing' instead it has "Special Report; Could we lose our F1 Race?"
Yawn.
They've also left the bit about Paul diResta off the cover because apparently Australians dont care about Brits not named Lewis or Jenson.
I haven't bothered to take the plastic off to see if the articles are actually removed too :)
Hello..
That's great :)
Was that around the time you delurked or am I misremembering?
Bonjour :)
they resent the voucher and spelt her name wrong on it but its ok, she still gets in :)
More time to admire the view.. of sand?
Hello.
i think it was roughly around then, yes
ahh it got there eventually..
Pat's stuck in a time loop... Maybe there are two of him too?
that would be scary
True, but they can't publish until they have the text and pictures from the UK because much of the content is shared between editions. The Australia people must have had a pretty tight turnaround...
Grrrr!
It's all the rage these days Bassano has already started.
Looks like MalteseFalconX is very well-travelled, there's meetup potential there. :)

There is a 'forest' on the way. its not really a forest, but its huge, with lots of small trees
I took the plastic off. Gasp! How long has Heikki been doing the race previews for?
the di Resta thing is still there.
If I was an editor I would never allow the headline 'Great Scot' about anyone Scottish ever. IT'S BEEN DONE.
I remember wanting to throw something at Charlie Whiting when he tried running the Brazil 09 qualifying in ridiculously wet conditions. Never imagined that other race directors at the same venue would take similarly high levels of risk.
Agreed...
Yes I see. So have you, I mean one of you had to run the lo-fi show.
Early, early forecast for Sepang is... wet
 hehehe
Feeling marginally more human after a shower.
Handy tip for the day: Take glasses off before stepping under the spray
I have advice on every possible situation I could want to ever do while I'm there :D
http://amyfulton.posterous.com/frizzy-hair-noo
(thats my first ever iPad screenshot, yay!)
:)
That is awesome!
woaaahh! i love that your ipad can tell you if you could get a migraine.. or frizzy hair :)
ooh I found even more! Star Gazing: poor. Tennis forecast, golf forecast and fishing forecast: fair
Grass growing: poor, lawn mowing: fair.
I really think motor racing is the only thing missing off that list. Grass growing?
Oh no. No skiing?
I know, whats the point in even going to Malaysia now?
Good thing you checked the forecast. Imagine you only found out after you had arrived there.
This is strange. Someone won the competition I held a week ago and hasn't claimed it yet...
Oh golly...
I . am. so. tirrrrred....
or tyred even
;)
:)
I'd better not be tired because I've got my last sign language class tonight and I want to do well on the test (1 minute of signing on any topic).
Casey Stoner passed that test yesterday ;)
Best of luck with that
:)
:D
Thank you :)
seconded!
:D
WOOHOO!
First race edit of 2011 is out!

Back from the table football table
Another solid win for team Leigh- that'll keep me awake for a while
:)
Good luck, Alia!
hmm those pirelli caps are going to take some getting used to.
arrrgh. why won't it work for me?? :(
Woah I never noticed Shumi's wheel rolling off like that...
quick note: my tomorrow's daily will be pulished a bit later again, which means only early in the morning. ta ta!
I think it's a nice change, saw the bridgestone ones far too much!
Just watching some LMS in the pub.(they seem to have a tv dedicated to motorsports)
That Aston is unbelievably ugly!
wow, 1080p HD!
WOW indeed. :D Couldn't make it work, though. Really weird. Ended up having to rely on good ole YouTube.
I appear to have the same issue, doesn't fancy playing.
Hi peoples.
had to sign in and my (brand new) machine still isn't good enough to crunch HD flash!
LMS in a pub? Nice one :)
Thank you :) It's due to start in just under an hour.
hmm, the grade 2 (720p) version plays just fine for me.
Ping: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/a-helping-hans
i couldn't even make grade 6 work... :(
oh my.
Seems as though Silverstone laid on a media day today, lots of stuff at Autosport.com.
They reckon the area from Bridge, Priory and Brooklands will be 'Silverstone's Henman Hill' now they've removed the gravel traps and are letting the public in there. Not sure I believe that but this quote is music to my ears, at last they get it:
"We are a circuit that has to value its customers otherwise we can't pay our way and if we don't look after the general public then we would have failed and we won't survive as a circuit,"
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90443
Pics http://www.autosport.com/gallery/index.php/id/2364
Q&A (subs and I've not read it yet) http://plus.autosport.com/premium/feature/3403/newlook-silverstone-the-inside-story/
I clicked that one and it worked, but it doesn't seem to work if I click grade 5/6
really? interesting. lemme try.
Wonder if that area will be in General Admission then?
RG, you're a genius! :D Thank you!!
6 works here, that's what it picked on the autodetect
odd. same case as RG - 5/6 don't work, 1-4 seem fine.
Well... yeah.
Do we call it Hamilton Hill?
Why not call it Graham Hill? Or Damon Hill? :D
Yeah it will
:)
There is a severe lack of Petrov in that race edit.
That is quite brilliant.
That would be classic. Though I'm not sure the current BRDC chairman would name a spectator area after himself...
Excellent :)
:D
you can now link to a point in time: http://www.formula1.com/video/?uid=2011032701R&time=86
also i like 0.25x speed.
will be useful for incidents in the future I'm sure :)
>>> 2. IndyCar from Alabama. Will Franchitti get 2 out of 2? Will Sato finally do the inevitable and crash?
That's a race I urge, cajole, beg everyone to watch 4/10. The beauteous circuit is barely 8 years old, designed by a Mr. Alan Wilson. Forested, bedecked with art sculptures and a museum onsite, view the track at Wikipedia and barbermotorsports.com. View AW's credentials on Wiki too. Don't we wish we could replace a certain HT with him? ;-)
If you watch Indycars there, and at Mid-Ohio in August, it'll hark back to what F1 was once like, in its surroundings and sometimes in wheel-to-wheel racing too. I can't include Watkins Glen in the list this year, sadly, as it evokes the same, and even more, nostalgia, as it's an ex-F1 venue, but you can download and watch Indycars at the Glen from racing-underground.com, if you're fortunate enough to be an invitee of the site.

Possibly. Not sure, have erased Wetpaint and Wikia from my mind.
You could on one of those

I've passed my sign language course :D
Well done!
Congrats
Ping: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/the-daily-commute
Thank you, RG and Steven! The "exam" proved surprisingly easy - I'd been led to think I was going to have to sign for a mnute on a topic of my choice but it turned out that I only had to do a repeat of last week's class (that half the students missed) and then fingerspell my name to check it was the same as the certificate. Incidentally, everyone else on my course also passed :)
Ping: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/let-loose
Aww, I miss the golden Glock Dog helmet.
Awww I love big picture!
I feel knowledgable since I saw this picture suggested at the bottom http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/something-borrowed-something-blue I like that I've stood where that was taken.
One of our favourite titles too.
Hehehe amazini :)

Strangely recognisable glass.... I have no idea why it's like that. It's on the bridge you use to drive into the centre of the circuit.

who's silly idea was it to do 24 big pictures?!
Someone who doesn't actually have to do much of the work?
#blamesteven
Hehehehe
Can't wait to see why
:D
Steeeeeeven
ummm. i..
Because Mrs C said someone who didn't have to do much of the work had the idea of 24 Big Pictures. Since Mr C apparently is doing a lot of the work, the traditional candidate for taking blame is you.
Ping: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/signed-sealed-delivered
Can't argue with that
God evening
That would be 'good', obviously :)
Hallelujah
Oh, is He here?
Hi.
:)
Yeah alright, I'm a little jet lagged still
#sidepodspace
Tonight's Soyuz launch is still scheduled for 6:18pm Eastern / 11:18pm UK
The next space shuttle launch has been delayed by 10 days and will now not launch till April 29th.
Good evening!
God Evening
Good point. He hasn't posted a comment for a while - guess he must be busy...
Yeah, you must be zonked.
Got a couple of fours on the plane and had the odd nap today. Don't feel too bad now but should probably have an early night and rise early tomorrow
Not just yet though ;)
*hours
Jeez, my typing is shocking
Sounds like a plan. I couldn't get home fast enough today. Now I'm eating blueberries. Yum.
I think I should have a week of fruit and cereal. Too much good food over the weekend
True. But with the walking it balanced out.
Hello. Just had unexpected curry at one of the local curry houses, very nice.
Not to tempt further indulgence from those wanting fruit ;)
unexpected curry?
I didn't say I wanted it :D
Got a text from a mate this afternoon, do I want to meet up. He calls at 6pm and says "fancy a curry?". Don't mind if I do.
Maybe it accidentally went into his tummy :)
Too hard to resist, can't blame you on that one
Alex's Hello magazine was on the plane
Sadly, he wasn't on Page 22
hehe
oops!
The only accident was the speed, quite full now :)
Sadly Barber is very narrow and there was hardly any passing last year (despite that there was nearly an upset win so it could be good for strategy). It is a great looking place though, race cars look like they belong. It would make a really good touring car or MotoGP venue.
Watkins Glen is brilliant. Narrow too but with some key passing spots. I'll miss it.
I live off RU.
You've been busy with the big pics again :)
Just a few more to go, thank goodness :)
Ah classic :)
I do like the song name titles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tZlu4wP4pw
Ohh I was going to mention yesterday but I forgot, Lou and I watched Men Who Stare at Goats over the weekend and it was a lot better than I remembered.
Still completely and utterly mental mind you :)
Southwest grounded 79 jets for the hole that came off of the roof of a jet. I hadn't heard this over the weekend if it's old news to you guys. I guess it's landed and taken off 39,000 times and they need to inspect all the planes with that flight time.
Anthony sent me an interesting kinky email earlier, thought it might be appreciated here:
Today, a head-to-head between a grid full NASCAR and F1 stars is just a pipe dream. But an equivalent thing happened 40 years ago, F1 against the Indycar Yanks, watched by me live on TV. Links for the 3 parts are below. Enjoy! Anthony

I must be tired, too, 'cause what I meant to say was a 5 foot hole opened up in the top of the fuselage.
Damn, sorry.
Linky email. Autocorrect! [shakes fist]
Hehehehehehe. :)

Never heard of it, looks intriguing, thanks guys :)

This may have been seen before but it is worth repeating if you haven't. Put together by Japanese TV.
Points for everyone!!
Jarno is actually quite excited and animated there!
That is a beautiful video to support Japan. Thanks for sharing that again.
What a lovely gesture :) I second Lukeh's motion.
T-1 hour to the Soyuz launch
Formula A was F5000 not Indycar. There were lots of Formula/F1 races
Hehehe:
@LeighDiffey:
Bob Varsha and I just got kicked out of Gresham Speedway. I guess Kimi is a but nervous about his Truck test!
That's understandable. Are NASCAR tests normally "secret" for rookies?
Yes please :)
I don't think so but as a private test I assume the team can do what they like.
If the team are paying for the track they control who gets in
Ah, OK. I was thinking more in terms of "does chucking out the press for Kimi's test indicate nerves or just normal procedure?" Because in F1 it would be the latter (well, before the days when only group tests became feasible)...
What I meant was that the DRIVERS were of Indycar, not the cars. They should've run the Indycars instead of F-5000's, though, because the race might not've turned out to be the farce and rout that it was. The 1000 bhp of the turbo-Offys and Fords might've made up for the agility advantage of the F1s. Oh and I must say the "kinky" reference had me scratching my head ... I mean, the race concept was weird but not perverted ... ;-)
T-30 minutes till the Soyuz launch. NASA TV showing build up activity at nasa.gov/ntv
The F5000s were cheap cars and it showed. F1 vs the turbo Offys would have been very interesting
Joe messed up the time we were supposed to record the podcast but Mr C was happy to apologise to him and take the blame!
Never known such an über-fan and/or suck up.
:)
oh, thanks for the reminder, I'll put it on.
oi! i was my fault. sorta. well kinda, i should always work in gmt anyhow.
(hearts) joe.
:D
I hope he apologises to you when you make mistakes too
Haha :)
i shoulda blamed tweetdeck.
#sidepodspace
T-20 minutes to launch. NASA TV is being a pain. It has cut out on me twice and spaceflightnow is running a silent video.
Meanwhile I have a great idea and I get nuthin'.
I wish I was Joe.
What was your great idea?
♡ christine
Uh... it was about cables. But Mr C likes that kind of thing :)
:D
A little side story on the F1 vs F5000 race: Languishing at back of the timesheets was 4-time Indy winner, legend A.J. Foyt. He said of his car, 'undriveable.' While he was away for another event, his team asked Jackie Stewart to try it out. Jackie did, posted a time 7 (s-e-v-e-n) secs faster than Foyt, 2nd or 3rd fastest of the F-5000s, parked it, said it was fine, returned to his Tyrrell. I was in hysterics over it but to this day think something was strange. 3 secs maybe, but 7????!!! Certainly showed they don't pick the World Champion by drawing names out of a hat, esp. not three times.
T-10 minutes to launch
If you intend to watch best get set up now.
Brilliant Jackie :D
I'm lucky to have NASA channel on tv, so I've got it on. Are your feeds cooperating now?
I like the little doggy that's going to space with these guys - Dasha. I hope it doesn't need many walks.
7 seconds seems incredible but you do get odd things like that occasionally. Gilles Villeneuve in a wet session at Watkins Glen went 11 seconds faster than team mate and reigning world champion Jody Scheckter. Scheckter told his engineer that there was no way any could go faster than his time and the engineer had to explain Gilles was 11 seconds faster
Yes
:D
T-5 minutes.
Hope the commander has his stick ready to poke the buttons
I can't get over just how claustrophobic that is inside that module. It makes me want to go run around outside.
Yeah, I was waiting for that.
They have another chamber they can move into once they are in space
That's good. Those little seats freak me out.
T-2 minutes
Nice tribute on the side to the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin.
Ping: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/let-me-just-follow-behind
Nice to see that
Looks like a good launch
That story made me giggle too. Gilles was one of those people who had spectacular moments of brilliance :)
It's such a gorgeous thing to see, and so powerful.
Booster jettison
Jody was interviewed in Motorsport a year or two ago and you could feel frustration coming off the page as he still couldn't understand it. He said he went so fast in those conditions that he actually scared himself and Gilles just blew him away
Thanks for mentioning this, Steven. I'm so happy I got to see it.
You can see the bump in the Soyuz when engines cut or when they light a newstage
Yeah
I am slowly converting sidepodcast into a space site
#confidential
Oh, ok. It's just between us, then. :)
I like that the one guy on the right was just petting Dasha.
You have to look after animals to make sure they don't panic
hehe
I hope he's ready to float in a few minutes!
He's floating
or now. Wow, so cool to see that little guy floating. hehe
the climax of which will be rubens on v-galatic?
I think the climax will be a race into space
Millions of dollars of technology and highly trained, cutting edge astronauts and I am mostly entertained by a stuffed dog toy.
The dog is floating. The commander is poking stuff with his stick. All is well
I saw Gilles drive to 3rd at Montreal, 1981, in pouring rain, several laps zooming thru S-bend at least 120mph with surfboard-sized bent-back front wing resting atop his helmet, him peering out one side to see!
Without that you would not know they were weightless
Low fi has its place.
:D
I know, but I think it's funny that something so simple is mixed in with all that complexity. I love it.
They always have something hanging there
I like that his daughter gave it to him.
It will be nice for her to have something that has flown in space
Belts off and helmets open.
They made orbit
Ping: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/staring-at-the-sun
LIKE!
It just never takes very long to get up there, does it? Our atmosphere isn't all that big with those rockets at hand.
oooh. Beautiful.
It makes it very clear how thin it is. How far can you go in 20 minutes?
No good. I can't tell what colour the tyres are. :D
Will they play the docking on Wed?
Hehehe.
*hums the song*
I guess so. I don't think I have watched a Soyuz dock.
Best information is at http://spaceflightnow.com/
Thanks
The writing's invisible, so they're hard.
The diagram shows the Soyuz. The bottom section is fuel tanks, engines etc. The middle section is where the crew are for launch and landing and the top section is the living room

Darn, was hoping to have them all done in two days. Just one left and only five minutes. It's unlikely.
Has to be small to get it up there
Nice photo of Petrov.
Run Christine Run!!
Or other encouraging words :)
Yeah, it just makes me squirm.
#claustrophobic
Definitely claustrophobic
Ping: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/rush-hour
TWO MINUTES!
Fail.
What time yesterday did you start?
Awesome, even though it's Vettel ;)
Not sure. It feels like forever :)
not early enough :)
morning all. last time I have to drag myself out of bed for work until next Tuesday, yay!
I've just checked the archive and the first one appears to have been posted at 03/04/11, 16:45 (GMT +01:00).
The last one was at 05/04/11, 00:58 (GMT+01:00).
I make that 1 day, 7 hours and 13 minutes. Well under 2 days.
Congratulations, Christine :D
Good morning!
I am ignoring that I have to get out of bed at 5.30 tomorrow. Curse you airports and your stupid check in rules.
#sorrychristine
:D
plus I just remembered next Tuesday is my birthday and I'm quite sure theres a law somewhere that says you don't have to do any work on your birthday.
yay!
Oh yes, that's in the Laws of Birthdays
excellent. a day in the comments then.
Maybe next time schedule 2 or 3 per day over a week, even if you do all the work at once.. makes it look like you're busy on it every night. :)
It was an experiment gone very, very awry and we have learnt a lot of lessons from it :)
Hehehe spoken like a true pro :D
Also, Mr C has broken the scheduler.
if we did that, malaysia would've happened before they were finished.
oi! it's a temporary thing :)
Ah :)
What was the aim?
I'd do that if i had the time/patience to write enough articles. In fact I'd planned to but I got bored
Celebrate the Australian GP with lots of yummy pictures.
Have we had Christine's Rankings for this week or will that be later on?
I was thinking about good technique in the workplace. Best not get things done too fast eh ;)
Tuesdays.
Ah, well that worked. :)
Thank you for reminding me - I'd lost track of my days of the week for a moment...
Is that tomorrow? #soconfused
my fav big picture

have loved the series Christine. Thank you :)

It doesn't count until I've been to bed.
love this title too: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/push-to-pass

hehe! :D
Morning, folks.
Air Asia Australia has commented on Amy's photo - they're loving it. :D So far, they've only commented on her pic today, it seems - a good sign. :D
Nice one! Even if they do others later, the fact they did Amy's first says something about the way they are thinking :)

yup. the first time was a day or two after it started, and we were still playing catchup.

Also, the other lady who requested Sidepodcast's help, Kate, is up to 3rd in the competition. Yay for Sidepodsplendidness!
SPC 1-3! :D
Awesome - the Indianapolis Motor Speedway 1st Annual Easter Egg Hunt
http://yfrog.com/hs8ns1j
And she's just 5 away from being 2nd!
That is a brilliant idea for getting families into the track and interested in what it does :)
One of those "why did they only think of that now" things. Brilliant idea! :D
*nods* Great stuff considering how recently she asked us. A 1-2 would be awesome (I'd prefer Amy to win because she's the biggest Lotus fan I know).
I may vote for Kate just before the competition closes. :) Depends on how close it gets. :D
I like your thinking.
I hope it takes off
Yeah absolutely, a bit of original thinking for a track over 100 years old is no bad thing!
Well that's the TMRG scores done, shall write up the blog post after work Tuesday
Not sure if you guys have seen this, but:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uO58SGiYwwo
Man, that's scary accurate. Really freaky. :D
That's not too far off!
The execution is stuck in the 60s, but the ideas are spot on! :O
Yeah, attitudes and stuff :)
The new Silverstone pictures and quotes have lead me to the booking page for the GP. I wasn't going to go and the prices are still so expensive... but that Gold stand at Farm at the new pit exit..
Still thankful we didn't end up at Donington.
Same
Tempted to go there too though, for WTCC+AutoGP. Probably couldn't afford it if I did the GP. Or Goodwood come to that.
I think I've been going to Singapore too long because I looked at the Silverstone prices and went 'ooh, reasonable, about the same as Melbourne'
:D
£229 for a single day seems very very steep to me... but then I checked 3-day and it was only £40 more and you get a roaming grandstand ticket for the extra 2 days.
I'd never bother with a single day ticket, they're always the most overpriced. 229 for one day is a lot but 269 for the weekend sounds cheap to me.
It's still gone up £50 from when I got my terrace tickets for 2009 :(
I'm also thinking in terms of what I can really afford and it's not that. :) There's always the credit card. I'll have to have a think.
Ouch.
When I went to LMS I liked the Club seating which was built into the earth bank but for the GP that's £299 for 3 days.
General Admission is £149, not convinced the viewing areas are worth it though.
It wasn't covered though, this list says it is. Must be one of the improvements. Why can't the open it sooner and hold a race this month so I can have a look!
I do have that £10 voucher for my birthday. :)
How is it that time?? It's easy to get lost in prices and maps. Must get to bed, byeee
They need to do the 360 degree seat viewer camera things that Melbourne and Sepang both have on their website, makes picking much easier :)
night Pat :)
Yes definitely. Although some of them are still being moved and built I think.
2am..
I finally did my Olympics application, now I wait for the ballot. I'm scared of not getting what I want but I'm also scared of getting what I want because it came to $1367. Ah well, it's the trip I've wanted to do since I was a little girl that I'll probably only do once so might as well make the most of it.
I went to Atlanta years ago. It's worth going if it's a dream.
The Olympics there, duh.
I'm looking at when I can go to the UK. Looks like it's April 16-23 or after June 27.
I've wanted to go since I was tiny so it definitely is a dream. Barcelona is the first games I remember so even going to the stadium last year 18 years later was really exciting for me.
Sydney would have been much easier to go to but I was still in school then, just a wee bit too young.
I remember the feeling of being there the most. It's great.
Did you go to many events?
I went to 2 track and field events. It seems like there should have been more...but if I remember right the ones I wanted were booked, like cycling and swimming.
fair enough. I've put down for one day of all the big drawcards like athletics, swimming, gymnastics and diving, then i've got 5 days of tennis and one day of rowing because its the one thing kiwis tend to be good at. Couldn't fit any cycling in though unfortunately :(
Any of those biggies will be great to see, and then you've got the tennis, so that's excellent. I've enjoyed going to the US Open in the past, and I know it's on your list. That's worth it, too, but you knew that. :)
I'm trying to find a fare I can afford.
But I have to get some sleep, so I should sign off. I hope you get the tickets you want.
Oh, and my friend at work liked your pic on facebook, I meant to tell you that I asked my friends to do that. :)
Good night.
thanks Kai that's awesome :)

Oooh what have you gone for? We have only applied for one thing so if we don't get it we're scuppered... We are going for the Athletics on the morning of the 4th August.
How's the new flat going?

Good. It feels like i am flying when i look out the window.
