Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmhummmmmmmm! I am pleased to see you all here again. You all look great! Let's see what I've got here for you ...

Ah-ha, thought so ... the Formula 1 thing shook our world and then fell into kind of a sleep again. No news, really. Except at Joe's, 'cause he's been really busy yesterday! And except of Sebastien Buemi who's been busy training at the moment of writing this words. Let's talk pictures then, shall we? Here and here you can find a very fine selection of some F1 moments.

And good news for all ... erm ... UK fans: the 'Senna' movie has finally been given a UK release date - 3 June. Lucky you! In Germany we haven't heard nothing about it yet. I think because there is already a Vettel movie in the making ...

Having said that let's move to THE topic for today, tomorrow, and the whole week, if you like: Champions League. Before the thing kicks off there's been only one topic for few days: Will Gareth Bale start against Real Madrid? Will Cristiano Ronaldo start against Tottenham? That's two topics by the way, but nevermind ... what matters is the answer: Yes, they both will start! *fireworks* *shout of joy* *etc* Real Madrid vs Tottenham Spurs tonight. Do not miss it. This is going to be a cracking match. Do NOT miss it! As for me, I don't know which team I'm going to support. I like both ... I do not mind Spurs winning and going through ... I do not mind Real winning either ... and by the way, Real has a secret weapon: this Xabi Alonso chap. Oh, we all love you too, lad! After this - if it's possible - even more. :-)

My enemies are playing each other tomorrow night so today I'm only going to enjoy the beautiful game.

Meanwhile in the league of all leagues 'Arry had something to say: "Harry Redknapp has suggested it would take a world-record transfer fee to prise Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer after the Wales winger said that he was open to the prospect of a switch to a leading continental club." Pffffffffffffffffffffffff ...

Wayne Rooney has been charged for using offensive language while celebrating his goal against West Ham on Saunday. He scored a hattrick. A hattrick! Why hasn't he celebrated like a "normal" guy? Why is he so angry? What's wrong with him? I don't understand. Do you?

Oh, and Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas has been involved in a car accident yesterday but he's all right. Take it easy Cesc, don't you worry about what Robin said ... as much as I loved this to be truth (everyone but United!!!), it won't happen. Not this year.

In yesterday's daily RG covered all the sports coming up this week and I agree with him: I don't know how I get anything done! Oh there are tweets of the week, sidepodchat, Football Weekly podcast and a new old episode of this for you to discover.

I shall finish up with some Spanish atmosphere, flair, spirit, complexion - or whatever you like to call it - by means of this interesting read about Real Oviedo, the home town of The Eyebrow Man. :-)

I am off to ... work, I guess. :-) Have a lovely day!

P.S. Heikki has been busy too! :-)

You could do a search on Grandprix.coms encyclopedia for "Saftey Car" ? then manually extract. If you can get it to highlight each race with a deployment could take less than 1 min?

  • RubberGoat05/04/2011 at 09:27

1 min per race with a mention. saftey car started in 93?

  • Alison05/04/2011 at 09:29

I'm also looking for the number during each race too...

I guess it's easier to sort through a shorter list.

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/04/2011 at 09:29

I believe there was one safety car period in 1973, then nothing for 20 years

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2011 at 09:56

I believe there was one safety car period in 1973, then nothing for 20 years

Correct. Probably because for the one race in 1973, we're still not 100% sure who won and probably never will be (Peter Revson was given the win but that was more of a "best guess" basis - at one point the officials had an Iso-Williams leading the race and even Frank didn't believe them!)

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/04/2011 at 09:59

at one point the officials had an Iso-Williams leading the race and even Frank didn't believe them!)

    :)

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/04/2011 at 10:01

Correct. Probably because for the one race in 1973

Safety/Pace cars were introduced to USAC / Indycar events the previous year and the race in '73 (can't remember which one off hand) was a kind of test the water situation

Logitech or Microsoft USB based sets start at around AUD $40 and are truly plug and play. I love my Bluetooth headset, the motorola S305 which cost about AUD $80 if you don't mind recharging it once a week. Buy a spare micro USB cable to charge from your mac instead of the supplied wall charger

Incidentally, if anyone needs the equivalent SC information from 2002-2009, 2000 or 1997, I can oblige using other season reviews/yearbooks.

Thanks Alia - Would you like to do some sort of collaborative post on this?

Incidentally you have been much more helpful than Manipe was...

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2011 at 10:46

(Do you have any other years worth of data?)

Which ones do you want? (Alison has quoted the years for which I can provide the information).

Don't let that put you off. They will have records of you on their system. Presumably you can prove you paid by bank statement if necessary. You do NOT need to provide the reference if you don't have it.

do they have a twitter? twitter customer service can be awesome.

  • Alison05/04/2011 at 11:06

This flipping government. I had a few places where I was gonna link you some advice but every single one has a note saying this service is being moved to X organisation... Blah blah blah.

Rest assured basically you should write to them. Say in your letter your name, address, date you were due to fly, that the flight was cancelled. Tell them you're unhappy with their handling of your case up to this point. Tell them they've lost your documentation from your previous claim.

By the time they write back, I'm sure some organisation will have decided who is regulating air passenger complaints.

Just don't let them tell you that you need a reference. This is a lie. You wanted to fly, the plane didn't go. You should have a refund no questions asked.

If they tell you that you need a reference, tell them they have a reference in their file (because one will have been generated when you bought the flight in the first place).

Bad news: I'm having trouble finding a contact method for RubberGoat.

I sent you a DM on Twitter...

I will admit we said BIDMAS

Indicies actually seems the most sensible word to me... But it was O for us.

  • Lukeh05/04/2011 at 12:40

Indicies actually seems the most sensible word to me... But it was O for us.

I like order. It keeps me in order from such scary words as indicies and exponent.

Although you could say they are squarey words...

  • Alison05/04/2011 at 12:41

    I have done question 1 :D

Clearly I had forgotten my BIDMAS after all....

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2011 at 12:41

I sent you a DM on Twitter...

...and Twitter's obviously doing a go-slow on me because the DM count hasn't updated. It should appear in the next 2 hours but thank you for reassuring me that a method of contacting you does indeed exist.

  • RubberGoat05/04/2011 at 12:42

OK so you guys said Exponents, and now I have this song in my head: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otFyKXje9Eg

    Ehhhh....

@adamcooperf1: #F1 Checking out hotels in Istanbul for the Turkish GP weekend. Always handy to read guest reviews on the major travel websites (cont')

    I have done question 1 :D

    Well done :)

  • Alex Andronov05/04/2011 at 12:45

Although you could say they are squarey words...

    :)

Well Order is what I learned and it's where orders of magnitude comes from that people know in real life... However I think it's avoided these days ebcause it makes people think, "hold on this list is supposed to make me remember the order and now one of the things is order *brain splodes*"

  • Alison05/04/2011 at 12:45

    Well done :)

It just makes me sad because I'm sure I could do all this very easily when I was at school.... I might just go back there instead.

  • Kathi05/04/2011 at 12:47

It just makes me sad because I'm sure I could do all this very easily when I was at school.... I might just go back there instead.

I will come back to you. Also uni maths is nothing like school maths.

Agreed. Totally different and much more interesting!

  • Alex Andronov05/04/2011 at 12:47

It just makes me sad because I'm sure I could do all this very easily when I was at school.... I might just go back there instead.

Yeah there is a huge oddness about trying to do any of these school things. I do find that maths is a bit easier for me because I do quite a bit of it in my job.

I was using Sin and Cos just last week for example.

  • Mr C05/04/2011 at 12:47

    including water? quite a few.

  • RubberGoat05/04/2011 at 12:49

    Definitely.

My Fridays were spent madly finishing assignments and then trying to outdrink the geologists and law students!

I will come back to you. Also uni maths is nothing like school maths.

    Yes :)

I'm going to try and do lots of practice before I start. Bit embarrassing being shown up by spotty 18 year olds.

Water probably isn't served in the Mathematical Bar...

just read this which brought things flooding back

An exclamation mark indicates that one should compute the factorial of the term immediately to its left, before computing any of the lower-precedence operations, unless grouping symbols dictate otherwise. A factorial in an exponent applies to the exponent, while a factorial not in the exponent applies to the entire power.

  • Amy05/04/2011 at 12:56

All packed! Then i stood on my bathroom scales with my bag on my head. I think Tonys scales will be more accurate.

Would i look strange if i wore my rain jacket when its not raining? Ie inside the airport? Its the bulkiest thing in there and id like it out :)

I got told the O in BODMAS meant "order" as in "anything which was meant to influence the order in which stuff got done", of which exponentials were merely one possibility (the original example was the line in the middle of fractions).

I always look like a total idiot when I fly. It's normally about 3 below here so I'm wandering around Dubai airport with jumpers and fluffly coats and everything. You just get used to it after a while.

I got told the O in BODMAS meant "order" as in "anything which was meant to influence the order in which stuff got done", of which exponentials were merely one possibility (the original example was the line in the middle of fractions).

But the line in the middle of fractions is divison no? Which hapens after exponentials?

Heh... I've just been reading more about this... Apparently people get confused because of course multiply and divide are equal promience and as are add and subtract...

    So...

    What does 10 - 3 + 2 =?

People who learnt the Aunt Sally method apparently think the answer is 10 - 5 = 5...

So a new nemonic has been worked out

"Pandas Eat: Mustard on Dumplings, and Apples with Spice." The intention being that Mustard and Dumplings is a "dinner course" and that Apples and Spice is a "dessert course." Then it becomes not a linear string of operations to do one after the other, but rather the "dinner course" operations are considered together and performed left to right, and then addition and subtraction are considered together, again performed again left to right.

Pandas! The person who came up with that is Danica McKellar as in the actress who played Winnie Cooper in the Wonder Years... Who also writes Maths text books... Yes the world is quite strange: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danica_McKellar

  • Kathi05/04/2011 at 13:16

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2011 at 13:19

But the line in the middle of fractions is divison no? Which hapens after exponentials?

The line in the middle of fractions takes precedence over division done within each line - it's a bit like vertical brackets. But horizontal brackets (even crossing multiple lines of a fraction) still take precedence.

  • Amy05/04/2011 at 13:20

I wish Christine could give F1 photographers points... :)

thing is, i've learnt to break things down to the simplest form and then comment every line so people know what's going on and why. that way no-one is excluded (assuming the can read).

thing is, i've learnt to break things down to the simplest form and then comment every line so people know what's going on and why. that way no-one is excluded (assuming the can read).

although you could even get a screen-reader to read stuff out to you too. why design a form a communication that only a select few can understand if they remember and only if they remember all the rules and put stuff in the right order.

    asking for trouble.

I guess so. I've not really thought about it. Doing operations in the right order is natural to me. I guess to understand any language you need to understand basic rules about the way it's written.

No - nearest I've got is "Albert Einstein for Dummies" (yes, such a book exists).

  • Alex Andronov05/04/2011 at 13:51

true. i just think someone missed an opportunity to teach it in a more sensible way.

Indeed... You (and I) are just really lucky that Algol and C came along. If we'd been programing in APL derived languages I think we'd have very different views on the matter...

This is the code in APL to pick 6 numbres from 0 to 40 and put it in a variable:

    x[⍋x←6?40]

maths' problem is that it has no competition. it needs a rival to undersell it with a smaller learning curve. as soon as it gets wind of the takeup it'll go to great lengths to win back mindshare :)

probably a better idea would be for documents to autosave on every change and then offer a lengthy history of revisions you can roll back against. lightroom does this. you never 'save' or lose a document.

OpenOffice can autosave and even do revisions, but it still has a save icon for those times when you want to save duplicate copies or have forgotten to put the autosave directory anywhere memorable.

I saw a cute video a few months ago with some French toddlers who were given old technology like cassettes, record players etc. and asked the kids what they were. They took the 3.5" Floppy, pulled back the metal protector and said "This is a camera"...

Indeed... I do think there needs to be a way of marking a revision better. A la forking and merging... I know this concept is too programery for most people but that's what leads people into trouble... I want to make a version of this for whatever causes them to make a copy and then work on that copy or worse leave things open without pressing save until they are sure.

I have to admit I never knew why they were called floppy. They;re made of rigid plastic,

The original ones (which I remember using on Dad's first computer) were properly floppy. 5.25" and only 360KB of capacity unless they were double-sided. Big enough for 2-3 games per side. Blissful times...

  • Alex Andronov05/04/2011 at 14:09

lightroom will do virtual copies, but not sure it can merge again later on.

Yeah... In a way it would be fine if you were able to mark revisions with a comment... But you know what that's like regular users would have millions of versions that they couldn't distinguish between.

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2011 at 14:10

Not quite true. Could be learned though.

Also, indicating unsaved state through dirtying breaks the convention that colour should not be the only determinant of status change.

Tyre wear sounds like it could be a bit tougher than Melbourne, so I'm guessing at 3 stops for most if it's dry.

I think we'll see wets in at least one practise session and/or qualifying but not the race.

Just browsed some news; makes me sad to see Ross Brawn reduced to giving excuses for so long. Reminds me of Ken Tyrrell, who after Stewart left was pretty much done with the front row of the grid, although Scheckter kept them up high for a year or so. Not that I'm writing Ross off, just looks familiar.

Are you in Dashboard? If so, single-click the text and it should appear in the reply box where your cursor is (or at the start of the reply if no cursor is present).

Otherwise, copy and paste the relevant text into the reply and put < blockquote > blockquote > around it (removing the spaces).

  • Alex Andronov05/04/2011 at 18:56

Ah in that case it's pretty straightforward... After you press reply you can either click on the bit of text you want to quote which will bring it in. Or click on the person's name to bring the entire comment in.

I can't stand the post editor. I'm writing my Dailies in Live Writer and then copy/pasting the HTML over...

For the rare blog posts I did/do, I always write it locally and commit it to subversion with an almost insane zeal.

"commit early, commit often" is my motto!

Some of the developers here can go a day or two without commiting changes. At least one has had to recover from backup because they did something stupid and hadn't committed for like 2 days.

Committing often allows me to do stupid things often.

  • Alison05/04/2011 at 19:26

Yeah really good shot. No way you should score with that though. Just look at the keeper running about all confused. You can't run out like that unless you're sure you're gonna catch the ball.

    Evening all

Can't really fault the keeper for that, stunning hit.

The first rule of the keepers union is you never blame another keeper.

Great strike. You can see him shape his body to hit it long before the ball gets near him.

  • Lukeh05/04/2011 at 19:31

Same here ... They are my Grandad's team so I have always tried to follow them when I can...

Me and a friend have always had a rivalry with the milans. Whenever we played console football manager he would always be AC Milan and I would always be Inter and its since passed onto FIFA :) they're our italian teams if you will.

  • Alison05/04/2011 at 19:31

It's also a pretty decent clearance, for a header, and a keeper.

    Not good enough eh ;)

I guess it's easy to say looking at it after, but he'd have been better staying in his goal and trying to save the first shot. I just always think coming out if you can't get your hands on the ball turns it into a game of pot luck. If it goes wrong, you're well out of your goal.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2011 at 19:31

It's also a pretty decent clearance, for a header, and a keeper.

To an extent. He should have put it nearer the touchline rather than straight up the middle

  • RG05/04/2011 at 19:31

The first rule of the keepers union is you never blame another keeper.

Nah, thats the second rule. The first rule is its always the defenders fault.

Continuing the realtime conversation in a more appropriate place:

This is a conversation for another thread, but that is exactly the problem with realtime!

Sorry, I wasn't intending on starting a debate on the inadequacies of formats on SPC. Just stating that the post looked strange.

  • Christine05/04/2011 at 20:08

Sorry, I wasn't intending on starting a debate on the inadequacies of formats on SPC. Just stating that the post looked strange.

It's fine, but if you compare it to the "this is our living room" thing, it's like coming in and taking root in an armchair, then complaining about the view, even though we've suggested the view from the sofa might be better.

  • Lukeh05/04/2011 at 20:09

Sorry, I wasn't intending on starting a debate on the inadequacies of formats on SPC. Just stating that the post looked strange.

Me and Lou spoke about this over the weekend after her daily was published but mr c has said for a long long time realtime is wayyyyy behind the rest of the site so I guess for me personally I've always accepted the wierd formatting that appears sometimes on realtime and the recommended viewing of posts is better on the post itself or on the dashboard.

  • Mr C05/04/2011 at 20:09

It's fine, but if you compare it to the "this is our living room" thing, it's like coming in and taking root in an armchair, then complaining about the view, even though we've suggested the view from the sofa might be better.

hehe. the problem with this conversation is it always ends with me saying "please can i switch off realtime now, it's the worst thing about sidepodcast" and everyone else saying "noooooo".

hehe. the problem with this conversation is it always ends with me saying "please can i switch off realtime now, it's the worst thing about sidepodcast" and everyone else saying "noooooo".

If you make the dashboard have resizeable widths so it works with two columns on my netbook, that's fine with me ;)

  • jpancoast05/04/2011 at 20:10

I use realtime, but whenever I want to read a post I go to the post and read it.

As for sofa vs. armchair, I prefer the armchair because that means I'm not sitting next to anyone else! :)

  • Mr C05/04/2011 at 20:10

If you make the dashboard have resizeable widths so it works with two columns on my netbook, that's fine with me ;)

I think the term 'better' is subjective in this instance.

I wouldn't have mentioned it if I had known it was a realtime only issue

[And I realise the answer to that is 'did you look?']

  • Christine05/04/2011 at 20:11

hehe. the problem with this conversation is it always ends with me saying "please can i switch off realtime now, it's the worst thing about sidepodcast" and everyone else saying "noooooo".

I've just realised I mistped that. I meant the carefully-selected team had 43 fewer points than the deliberately-rubbish team (my mistake with the rubbish team was to put all the rookies in it, one of whom was Paul di Resta...)

Never mind Spurs, what about Inter???

Bad day to be from Group A.

  • Alison05/04/2011 at 20:39

i don't want to buy one when i have millions at home :) stupid customs cards.

Is that all it's for? You can borrow one on the plane off the stewards normally.

They normally give out pens for this on the plane don't they?

  • Bassano05/04/2011 at 20:42

They normally give out pens for this on the plane don't they?

Do low cost airlines invest in pens too?

Hah! No point paying £3 for an airport pen though eh....

Where do you shop for pens, Harrods?

  • Kai05/04/2011 at 20:43

They normally give out pens for this on the plane don't they?

I think 'give out' and 'on the plane' have been permanently separated, at least for our domestic travel. Not sure about real airlines.

  • Alison05/04/2011 at 20:43

Where do you shop for pens, Harrods?

Everything's expensive at the airport!! ;)

  • Alison05/04/2011 at 20:44

Do low cost airlines invest in pens too?

I'm sure they would have A pen you could at least use.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2011 at 20:44

i'm just not sure where threadless, random conversation fits in. it's fun, but it reduces the purpose of the rest of the site, i think. if people aren't reading guest posts, they'll stop writing them etc. needs more thought. lots more.

I read all posts but the only way to monitor all comments as they come in is realtime. Normally I have realtime on my first tab set to the daily and any other 'active' posts in adjoining tabs. I use realtime to monitor all comments and to respond to daily comments. All responses to other posts are done in the individual posts.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2011 at 20:46

Tell them to like your pic, while you are there :)

Go through the departure lounge and point out to everyone with an iphone that they could like your pic

agreed. the question is, if realtime were a separate site you could go to and just comment all day everyday about stuff. would that be a bad thing. then go to sidepodcast to comment on shows or posts.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2011 at 20:48

agreed. the question is, if realtime were a separate site you could go to and just comment all day everyday about stuff. would that be a bad thing. then go to sidepodcast to comment on shows or posts.

Surely making it a separate site increases the chances of people not contributing posts.

  • Bassano05/04/2011 at 20:49

agreed. the question is, if realtime were a separate site you could go to and just comment all day everyday about stuff. would that be a bad thing. then go to sidepodcast to comment on shows or posts.

Some folk find stuff from the Dailies but there's no reason why it couldn't be done.

Keeps the Main Site more relevant. But I still think you'd have the same cross-contamination, personally.

Forcing 2 windows/tabs probably won't be popular either

  • Bassano05/04/2011 at 20:50

agreed. the question is, if realtime were a separate site you could go to and just comment all day everyday about stuff. would that be a bad thing. then go to sidepodcast to comment on shows or posts.

It would have to include ALL posts, which is why I think it defeats the purpose

If you go onto twitter.com it seems to load a bunch of random tweets from random people. Odd.

How is that different from normal?

As in random people who you dont follow.

  • Lukeh05/04/2011 at 22:27

I mean in your actual twitter feed. Not the generic twitter log in.

  • Mr C05/04/2011 at 22:28

I updated my blog sidebar with events for the next fortnight, I don't think I've seen it so busy :)

  • RubberGoat05/04/2011 at 22:30

    Daily is done.

Actually it was done half an hour ago but I edited it twice to add the links I saw after I had finished it.

Can all you lovely people not finish your blog posts before I do? ;)

  • Amy05/04/2011 at 22:30

yes applies to residents too although if its over $900 they'll tax you on your way back into the country so there is no point

    Sorry :)

  • Amy05/04/2011 at 22:37

yes i am a resident. And residents can use the tourist refund scheme because we're tourists of wherever we're going.

Still weird but refunds are always good :D

  • Amy05/04/2011 at 22:38

taking 5 minutes to post each comment is so infuriating I'll say goodbye til I'm on the plane. And the plane has just arrived, i can see it out the window :)

Sounds like the craziest scheme in the world.

Our tax refund scheme is as good as useless. Basically no retailers are part o it here.

Mr C, I'm guessing you won't be upgrading but there's a rumour that a new Final Cut Pro is being released next week

why won't i be upgrading? i allocated the money and spent it twice in anticipation. although if it's not awesome, i'm moving to aftereffects.

    General megabucksness

    But:

Earlier this year, Apple invited individuals including Final Cut Pro author Larry Jordon to a hands on. Jordan describes what he can of the preview meeting:

I've Seen The New Version of Final Cut Pro... and it's a jaw-dropper

  • RubberGoat05/04/2011 at 22:51

I've Seen The New Version of Final Cut Pro... and it's a jaw-dropper

Of course he would say that - it's an apple thing

  • Mr C05/04/2011 at 22:52

have upgraded twice already, i need it for my job. pro video is expensive, just the way it is. still cheaper than a set of lights :)

  • Bassano05/04/2011 at 22:52

It's very unusual for any Apple staff to comment on an unreleased product. When they say stuff like this, they're not often wrong

[could also be a permitted statement]

it's not that. lots and lots of people are dumping fcp pro due to lack of updates (due to iphone taking over). he's playing for time, hoping we don't all jump ship.

  • Bassano05/04/2011 at 22:55

OK - just thinking that Apple always use words like 'wonderful' ' amazing', 'ground breaking' etc.
