Since no-one has posted a daily I thought I would write one with a few interesting links I have found. Obviously as it is a last minute rushed job it is not to the normal standard but since everyone at sidepodcast has a problem with time zones at least this lets people know they are on the correct day.

#sidepodspace

We had a discussion the other day about a little space rock that came within 12,000 km of hitting the Earth. Well that is not the only close call people have had with things flying around in space. The occupants of the International Space Station had to lock themselves in the two Soyuz craft that are currently docked there while a piece of space debris whizzed by way too close for comfort.

We all know the festival of Speed is happening in the next few days. I just found out that Martin Donnelly is driving a Lotus 102 there. That won’t mean much to most of you but the last time he drove one it split in two across the cockpit and deposited him on the track ending a potentially great F1 career. He was Damon Hill’s F3 team mate and Hill was not threat to him. He then drove for Eddie Jordan in F300 with Jean Alesi as his team mate and there was nothing between them in speed but Donnelly was far smarter behind the wheel.

Finally. We all know Alison is a fan of Masterchef which is a show where people who claim that they are great cooks prove that they are clueless. Well it seems the presenters have become a bit of an internet sensation as someone has turned some of their comments into a song.

I think that is enough for an emergency daily

This is like the emergency biscuit idea from Apprentice last night

Like that but I would have had the sense to put chocolate on the outside part of one half and on the inside part of the other half rather than just down one side.

It was grand. we just chatted away really. I had to leave at about nine, so I've no idea how long everyone else hung around for.

I think they stayed there until two o'clock, more or less...

    Although I didn't go :(

July 1 always public holiday here. Well, always since 1997... So this Thursday is actually Friday except some dear clients do not care and fly in for meeting tomorrow morning. #nochattingwithbeerglasstill2amthen

  • Leigh O'Gorman30/06/2011 at 09:08

    Listening to it :)

I just hope people can understand my accent. Also, a prize for anyone that notices my verbal slip-up during the news section for the Le Mans Series... Only noticed it myself after I finished mixing it last night.

    :)

  • Alex Andronov30/06/2011 at 09:12

    Who is Ambridge?

It's the place that the Archers is set. The archers are a fictional family in the longest running soap opera in the world. It's broadcast on Radio 4 in the UK. They have apparently started a new spin off show called Ambridge Extra.

  • Christine30/06/2011 at 09:16

The theme tune!!! Why is it Irish? I expected it to be cool and funky. Not that Irish music isn't but you know what I mean.

I didn't want people waking up with hangovers and wondering how they were going cope with a night in the Coal Hole tonight. Time zones are confusing enough without the daily being 24 hours behind

    Hi RB.

I've just sent that tweet to my people in Valencia.

    They will investigate ;)

  • RG30/06/2011 at 10:28

Hmmm. Not sure that's the best idea ever, TBH.

    That would be... insane.

  • Marti30/06/2011 at 10:33

If Ricciardo's reports are true, then I understand Red Bull will sponsor Hispania?

I mean, Kathikeyan is the one who brings the money in, and if he leaves the team then I don't see why Tata should stay as a sponsor.

  • @Twiger (Nick)30/06/2011 at 10:33

Andy says 'tell EJ that she has her *own* hair...'

I dont get why people make fun of that.

  • Journeyer30/06/2011 at 10:36

Hmmm. Not sure that's the best idea ever, TBH.

    That would be... insane.

Well, all he needs to do is beat Liuzzi. If Vettel did it, so can he.

His race finishes won't look too good, but on the other hand, starting in the HRT is a win-win. The team gets money, and expectations from Disco Dan will start low (seeing what car he's going to drive).

  • @Twiger (Nick)30/06/2011 at 10:36

    Hey RG,

Remember I noted on your blog the other day that Hispania were due a driver change this weekend...

  • Journeyer30/06/2011 at 10:38

On a tangent, having Ricciardo on the grid is the final warning for Buemi and Alguersuari. At least one of them will be out by season's end, if not sooner.

  • RG30/06/2011 at 10:38

Remember I noted on your blog the other day that Hispania were due a driver change this weekend...

Hah! Yeah, and I laughed it off because I didn't think they had the ability to get anyone else in....

On a tangent, having Ricciardo on the grid is the final warning for Buemi and Alguersuari. At least one of them will be out by season's end, if not sooner.

i disagree. i think it means they've both done enough, so now alternate means of experience are having to be considered.

  • Journeyer30/06/2011 at 10:39

  • Leigh O'Gorman30/06/2011 at 10:40

A few people seem to be congratulating Adam Carroll for starting in World Series this weekend with P1 Motorsport.

Excuse me, but as decent a driver (and chap) as he is, he's been doing the rounds in GP2, A1GP and even had a couple of races in IndyCar.

One wonders what he hopes to achieve or what the series expects from him in World Series...

  • Journeyer30/06/2011 at 10:41

i disagree. i think it means they've both done enough, so now alternate means of experience are having to be considered.

but they can't just parachute ricciardo in without any experience. that was a lesson they should've learned with alguersuari.

also, who says you can't swap ricciardo with buemi or alguersuari. if it's red bull money, red bull can do what they want with it.

  • @Twiger (Nick)30/06/2011 at 10:41

i disagree. i think it means they've both done enough, so now alternate means of experience are having to be considered.

    Let's see what happens.

  • @Twiger (Nick)30/06/2011 at 10:51

    he's been doing fridays.

That word should be banned, i still cant read it without hearing that annoying song

  • F1Wolf30/06/2011 at 10:52

i disagree. i think it means they've both done enough, so now alternate means of experience are having to be considered.

I would agree with that. I just do not see much logic behind Karthikeyan leaving, TATA is the teams only real sponsor ... OK, one of two, the other one is TATA Motors ...

  • @Twiger (Nick)30/06/2011 at 10:54

I would agree with that. I just do not see much logic behind Karthikeyan leaving, TATA is the teams only real sponsor ... OK, one of two, the other one is TATA Motors ...

I guess tonios ability to oppertune "points" in the battle for NOTLAST is worth more to them.

Im not sure though, i think all the teams outside the top 10 are classed as column 3, which means they get the same prize money.

They need to beat lotus to get 10th

  • @Twiger (Nick)30/06/2011 at 10:55

everything you ever wanted to know about f1 podcasts: backmarkersf1.wor…y-of-f1-podcasts/

That must be the 5th blog i have read this week with that theme!

  • F1Wolf30/06/2011 at 10:56

I guess tonios ability to oppertune "points" in the battle for NOTLAST is worth more to them.

I do not believe that team at HRT position can afford to drop sponsor, no matter what. So either this is just unfounded rumour, or TATA is not keeping up with payments, or TATA gave up on the team ...

  • Mr C30/06/2011 at 10:56

That must be the 5th blog i have read this week with that theme!

    where are the others?

  • James30/06/2011 at 10:58

Disco Dan could well be racing* at Silverstone www.sportsnewsfir…rmula-one-chance/

at least this mean Jaime gets to keep his seat :)

  • @Twiger (Nick)30/06/2011 at 10:59

    where are the others?

Just links i have been clicking on twitter,

here is one of them http://www.blackhatppc.co.uk/2011/06/3-line-sitelinks-in-the-uk-and-guess-whos-got-them-first/

  • Journeyer30/06/2011 at 10:59

I wonder if Ricciardo will get weekend long "flu" come the Indian GP?

    Liuzzi might. :D

I'm still guessing we'll see Ricciardo in an STR race seat before the season is out.

  • James30/06/2011 at 11:01

I'm still guessing we'll see Ricciardo in an STR race seat before the season is out.

    the question is which.

  • @Twiger (Nick)30/06/2011 at 11:01

I'm still guessing we'll see Ricciardo in an STR race seat before the season is out.

    I think next year.

they would have got him the HRT seat at the start of the year if this was the plan

  • Mr C30/06/2011 at 11:01

here is one of them www.blackhatppc.c…s-got-them-first/

what has that got to do with f1 podcasts?

  • @Twiger (Nick)30/06/2011 at 11:01

what has that got to do with f1 podcasts?

Nothing, i was talking about the theme

  • Mr C30/06/2011 at 11:02

Nothing, i was talking about the theme

oh, the wordpress theme? i thought you meant... nevermind.

    no-one ever blogs about f1 podcasts, i thought i'd missed a trend.

  • @Twiger (Nick)30/06/2011 at 11:03

oh, the wordpress theme? i thought you meant... nevermind.

    Ah, yes!

    Sorry! :)

  • TheVillainF130/06/2011 at 11:06

yea that wordpress theme is a bit popular...I had it first! (well no but I like to think so lol).

It just looks very F1 to me.

thx for retweeting and linking to it here MR.c

  • F1Wolf30/06/2011 at 11:18

they would have got him the HRT seat at the start of the year if this was the plan

at the start of the season they had 2 drivers already ... perhaps they hoped one of them will be much worse than the other come Silverstone, but they are pretty even on points with Alguersuari on pretty good run (with poor quali)

  • Pat W30/06/2011 at 11:22

  • Steven Roy30/06/2011 at 11:23

I am sure most people haven't noticed but the women's world cup football started a few days ago. Women's football is really good and I plan to take in some of the matches.

We all know racing drivers are the masters of excuse making but the coach of the North Korean women's football team must be a budding racing driver. His team lost their first match but he said they were heroic to play at all because doctors had advised some of his players not to play after the goalkeeper and 4 defenders were all hit by lightning at the pre-event training camp.

I half-watched the England v Mexico game (was doing something else at the time.. my game results I think). Was okay but I didn't find it much different to the men's game apart from a lack of play-acting!

“@mikllll: what do you think about Silverstone?”

@H_Kovalainen: I think they spoiled the track by making the new section, pits I haven't seen

There wasn't much wrong with the track as it was, seems more technical now. From what little I've seen I do think it functions better now the new pits are open.

it's always a disappointment in person. you can see half of it from the car park, then a bit more as you get closer. seeing it this way first, you get the whole thing in one hit.

I just can't see how this Narain out news can be real, just look at this page ...

    www.hispaniaracin….com/sponsors.php

Unless of course the TATA dollars are not arriving as scheduled ...

maybe TATA blew them on a 150 tonne sculpture for FOS instead?

  • Leigh O'Gorman30/06/2011 at 12:41

Oh my word. The new Bjork project will have an app with the album.

"Each track will contain ten "levels": the song, an interactive game themed around the song, musical animation, an animated score, animated lyrics, a graphical interpretation of the score, an academic essay on the unusual things going on in the song, archival footage from National Geographic and the BBC, unique content specific to each song and different from every other, and special photographic content."

@NobleF1 Just got back from Munich - and passport control at Heathrow better than ever thanks to extra staff drafted in because of strike

thats good news, I was worried my dad would have yet another reason to hate travelling. then again, they might not be giving their extra staff to the non EU queue :D

When are they due to land?

  • Amy30/06/2011 at 14:35

Oh yeah. My camera won't work without batteries, maybe I should charge some. And change back to my old phone because the new one isn't intuitive for rapid tweeting/posterousing. And sort out some music for the car.

This 'day off before going to a thing' is more complicated than it should be.

Ohh that's true. A conflict of truths. It always rains in Wimbledon and it is always sunny at Goodwood (apart from that one year it wasn't). But they are in Wales so it'll rain. And be sunny. At once.

they are in England until Tuesday and then they're going to Wales, so perhaps sunny until Tuesday and then rain?

Not sure, I was convinced Silverstone had a hex because every time I've been there it has been very windy, dull, often wet.. Not been to the Grand Prix though.

I'm leaving my golf stuff in the car (robbers: don't read this), so there'll be access to a couple of umbrellas, an anorak, a golfing windbreaker top, and sunglasses.

It is understood that Ricciardo will take Karthikeyan's place for the remainder of the season – except at the Indian Grand Prix where the local driver will return to the cockpit.

It says no rain for Goodwood but echoing others in here I'll taking waterproofs right through to sunscreen...

In comparison to Silverstone how cold is at Goodwood? Silverstone gets savaged by the wind and I'm never just right up there....too hot or too cold!

Not as windy unless you go up the hill. There aren't too many places to shelter though, if it does rain.

It was a theory thrown out, but I'm not sure how they'd do it - they're penniless.

  • Journeyer30/06/2011 at 15:24

    http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/06/30/ricciardo-to-hrt/

Joe's even more ambitious than I am. Ricciardo to Red Bull in 2012? If that happens... I'd be stunned. They'd have made Toro Rosso practically irrelevant in a single move.

As for Webber, I could see him going to Ferrari if Flav makes a comeback there. If not, he might be better off just retiring.

  • Liss30/06/2011 at 15:25

It was a theory thrown out, but I'm not sure how they'd do it - they're penniless.

Hope not...don't want some trendy presenter thing on my screens on a Saturday/Sunday morning or adverts!

Understatement much? :D That said, why change what is a working setup for Red Bull? Webber's quick, but not quick enough to challenge Vettel. Somehow, I think Ricciardo will be a bigger threat to Team Vettel.

  • Journeyer30/06/2011 at 15:29

Indeed. Well, he did make a punching bag out of Karthikeyan, he needed a tougher teammate.

  • Liss30/06/2011 at 15:29

I doubt it. The final few years of BB saw the show go through the floor. No one watched at all.

It was huge money spinner for them regardless of the public perception...the amount they made from advertising and phone calls was staggering. They didn't want to let it go but felt they should due to it's age and increasing amounts of detractors....I live with a BB addict...I got all the 'critical information' ;-(

  • Pat W30/06/2011 at 15:30

Good thanx....a bit boring at work. Hpw's you? What's this about C4 grabbing the F1 rights from the BBC?!!

I wouldn't be against C4, they did a really good job with the cricket and other sports. I'm sure it wouldn't necessarily be 'T4 does racing'.

Very good point there. But it all depends on how Ricciardo does. For all we know, he falls flat on his face and just moves up to STR instead of RBR. The next few weeks will be key.

Could be a long-winded negotiating ploy to get Lewis and/or Seb to lower their demands.

Maybe we'll see Hamilton and Ricciardo as teammates in a couple of years?

i'm still thinking jaime triggered a contract clause with his points in valencia and now STR are stuck with him. they could still run danny next year.

  • James30/06/2011 at 15:34

you think he popped in to see horner for a cup of coffee and a chat about the weather?

probably wanted the advice they gave Vettel to stop crashing into people.

I don't think it was serious...more a chance to be photographed and put the shivers up MW.....I can't really see him going anywhere at the moment tbh....Nando will block any move to Ferrari, who else is there? I think he's effectively stuck with Mclaren for next 2 years at least

  • Journeyer30/06/2011 at 15:35

    Hmm quite interesting 'reviews'!

I must admit though I do think joe comes across a tad bitter at times in his phonecalls....and if anyone dares says well if you don't like it step aside then they're jumped on. He does have a tendency to moan a little about travelling far and wide...but that's ultimately his choice. Great podcasts though :-)

Erm shall we go back and listen to the last podcast? You were convinvced the Lewis/Button crash was 99% Lewis's fault.....even though Jenson has since apologised for it and most other people said racing incident....It's not a dig but you do tend to go against Lewis more then going with him so to speak....and to think he waved at you!

  • Liss30/06/2011 at 16:22

i like him, but he's visited the stewards 8 times this season, for a reason.

  • Liss30/06/2011 at 16:25

    that's because it was.

In your view but JB didn't agree and neither do other commentators...on first impression yes but not after squillions of replays...

Anyway it's a done deal now...

In regards to me mentioning it being a dig...it's not a dig, it's an observation, if I was digging i'd be having an actual go. I like the outspokeness even if don't always agree

  • Emily30/06/2011 at 16:25

    They didn't let you stay?

No. They didn't like my relationship with Turkey_Machine and they didn't think that he could support me without me working, so they kicked me out. I *was* able to stay one night with him though, so that was good. Trying to earn money for a visa now so I can go back.

  • Pat W30/06/2011 at 16:25

    that's because it was.

If you said it was Jenson's fault, you'd be bashing him. That's the trouble.

  • Mr C30/06/2011 at 16:28

In your view but JB didn't agree and neither do other commentators...on first impression yes but not after squillions of replays...

i watched the replay more than 60 times. i stand by my opinion. a lengthier discussion was had here: http://sidepodcast.com/post/live-canada-2011-the-race#comment-1120847

On my way to meet Lou at the railway station, back soon

  • Mr C30/06/2011 at 16:30

No. They didn't like my relationship with Turkey_Machine and they didn't think that he could support me without me working, so they kicked me out. I *was* able to stay one night with him though, so that was good. Trying to earn money for a visa now so I can go back.

    i've missed something major?

but what has he done wrong recently? drove through the wrong pit box... and...

  • Liss30/06/2011 at 16:31

I think half the problem is Lewis makes it too easy to bash him....JB keeps his nose out much more easier

Haven't been on here since I've been back, so you didn't really miss it so to speak. But, yeah, the 6 month trip I had planned and paid for was squashed by immigration with no refunds. :

I'm trying to stay positive about it and look at the good in it. They could have held me overnight, instead they released me to him, which was very good.

  • Emily30/06/2011 at 16:32

Boo. Hopefully it'll work out in the long run.

I hope so too, and I'm fighting to make it work. If nothing else, it's going to end up being a great story to tell our kids and grandkids if things work out! :)

stop crashing into other drivers and there would be little cause from complaint.

lewis is a great driver, at his best when leading and there's no-one to bump into. vettel is exactly the same in that regard. the only difference is vettel has the fast car this season.

I don't know what's happening with the lad....feel a bit sorry for him which is why I leap to his defence sometimes....He probably crashes just as much as Sutil but due to his front running status gets a lot more flak for it. I just think the F1 media can be overtly OTT in the vitriol directed at him.

they even scared me and I was only going to be in the country for 3 days!

  • Marti30/06/2011 at 16:38

they even scared me and I was only going to be in the country for 3 days!

    What happened to you?

  • Emily30/06/2011 at 16:39

they even scared me and I was only going to be in the country for 3 days!

Essentially, they held me for 6 1/2 hours without telling me why and locked me in a room with 3 other detainees, who were all irate and scared me quite a bit. I ended up not being able to eat for 40 hours and I've lost 25 pounds in a week and a half... Glad for the weight loss, just wanted it to be under better circumstances.

Could you take that case to the police, or something similar?

  • Amy30/06/2011 at 16:40

    What happened to you?

nothing really, i just expected a smile after being on a plane for 24 hours like I'd gotten in every other place I'd visited up until then in my life. Instead I got a very gruff 'why are you here!?' as if the country really didn't need or want my tourism dollars. Plus I was dedicating half my brain to trying to work out how to hide from the camera awaiting me in the arrival hall. My giant baggage distraction worked a treat ;)

  • Liss30/06/2011 at 16:40

America scared me....welcomed off the plane to view of sheriff stood there shotgun in hand, expressionless face...

    So cliche!

  • Emily30/06/2011 at 16:40

Could you take that case to the police, or something similar?

US Embassy couldn't do anything about it, and I don't want to risk being able to enter the UK again later on.

  • Emily30/06/2011 at 16:41

Oh, they also kept my passport, so if I would have been stopped, I would have been arrested. I've got it back now though, had to fight to get them to "find" it though.

who knows how many people will be trying to crash with London friends for the Olympics! Although it seems zero people in Britain got tickets so that helps :)

  • Emily30/06/2011 at 16:50

I think what hurt more than not being allowed to stay in the UK was one of my "friends" calling me a liar on a public board. Thing is, if I had of lied to immigration, I would have gotten in no problem. It was only because I can't lie and I was honest that I had problems. Needless to say that person is no longer counted amongst my friends.

Last time I transited thru LAX I got put in the naughty room because they didn't understand why I had two passports - I am allowed to have a UK one and an NZ one. That was an odd experience because I had done nothing wrong. They asked the lady in front of me why she had visited a certain country 3 times in the last year, to her reply that she was from there and visiting family...

When it got to my turn, I explained things to them and the small lady asking me the questions ended up getting very mad at her 6ft plus colleague. All a waste of 2 hours just to stamp my passport so I could cross the road and go to the other terminal!

And all we have to do in the summer is watch a rather financially ruined rugby league team.

my flatmate had problems at Christmas when she flew into Bangladesh on her Bengali passport then tried to fly back into Australia with her brand new Australian one (she'd only been a citizen for about a month at that time). She got pulled up for trying to enter the country when the system had no record of her leaving the country in the first place :)

Final one - Mrs. Goat and I won a trip through her work from Wellington to Sydney. It was a mystery trip and she needed a Visa, which was a problem as she had an old passport. So when she got to immigration and was asked where she was staying, where she was going etc. all she could say was "I don't know". So she got pulled aside while the other 10 of us got rather worried.

It turned out all right though. They checked her passport out and let her in after an hour.

I've thought for some time, that the standard immigration officer operation scheme around the world is to act as abrasive as possible to people, ask pointed questions that don't necessarily have right or wrong answers, just to see if they can make people flap. They *want* to see how you react and act, that's how they get a feel for if you're doing something shady or not.

They're not actually acting on any information they have on you, they're more or less just poking to see what happens.

  • Emily30/06/2011 at 17:07

Anyone has been to Spain? How are our police-officers?

  • Amy30/06/2011 at 17:10

Anyone has been to Spain? How are our police-officers?

I found airport security leaving Spain on the way to Paris to be a lot tighter than any of my other EU to EU flights, it was the only place I got fully patted down and my shoes x-rayed. I didn't see any immigration people on my way into the country though :)

  • Emily30/06/2011 at 17:11

The immigration officers also didn't like the fact that I had my medical records with me. I'm allergic to EVERYTHING and always take my medical records with me on trips due to that.

    Evening all.

Great to see Porsche are returning to Le Mans. There should always be Porsches challenging for the outright win. Seems odd though they will be there to challenge Audi when they are both owned by the same people

    Hi Steven.

Yes! Great news for Le Mans :)

Porsche made a video to announce their decision, you'll find it in my latest post ;) http://martif1.com/

I'll watch MotoGP and listen to ILMC/LMS, unless I'm out.

I have a feeling we won't see Porsche and Audi go for overall wins, maybe they'll switch around and Audi will do GT, their GT3 car is pretty good.

  • Marti30/06/2011 at 19:45

Or maybe we'll have to wait a little bit until we see Porsche 100% performance... Let's see. The bad thing is that we'll have to wait until 2014.

ps. Yes, I said I would leave and I will leave. Bye hehe.

Maybe the Porsche will be like the Bentley. An Audi in disguise

  • Pat W30/06/2011 at 19:48

I was trying to think what else Audi would do.

Dunno, the whole group is restructuring. I expect they'll stay in DTM. VW are stopping Dakar to go into WRC at the expense of Skoda (I suppose Skoda will stop). Not sure if they'll carry on with SEAT in touring cars, they that cut back to customer status a while ago.

I think IndyCar has been courting them and there was this whole engine rules thing in F1 basically because of them.

I can't see anyone other than Joest running it.

I can't see anyone other than Joest running it.

They ran Porsches for years before Audis so it is a natural fit.

So how come you guys aren't coming? I thought you were adamant when we spoke in Cardiff. I'm sure F1 projects can wait a few days and you don't necessarily have to make a show about it..

money partly, but mostly time. joe thing is also bad timing, but it doesn't wipe out a whole day, only a few hours. didn't really have time to go to the pub either, but i blame kai for not taking our secret scheduling into account when booking her holiday ;)

  • Mr C30/06/2011 at 20:54

...also i wanted to make flyers for goodwood. giving those out would sorta have justified the cost, but printing stuff on the cheap takes soooooo flipping long.

needed to start printing at christmas to have made it in time.

  • Gavin Campbell30/06/2011 at 20:54

I think Silly Season is now underway with some early results it would seem. I am confused about HRT if Kolles goes to Williams because doesn't he own the infastructure of Hispania racing? Or has that changed with the appointment of Geoff Willis??

  • Lukeh30/06/2011 at 20:56

Oh my gosh I just heard of a friend's father getting the greatest thing ever.

.His father is flying To Silverstone via helicopter as a guest of Williams. Pit lane pass, and hour with the drivers before and after the race, the full works

  • Pat W30/06/2011 at 20:58

    Hehehe, that's fair enough. :)

Joe's would mean taking a half day off work which I don't think I can do after a week away, will have stuff to catch up with, plus the 7hr roundtrip and a tank of fuel.

It is his facility in Bavaria, no idea how it'll work if he 'leaves'.

£40 for a guy talking for a couple of hours or £37 for actual F1/IndyCar/LM cars and drivers for a day. Joe would have to do a hell of a lot to beat that.
