It's Goodwood time, baby! Woohooo!!!

Pinch, punch, first of the month! No returns! We have managed to turn up in the 7th month of the year with the arrival of July (how did we get here already?!) and that can mean only one thing - today marks the start of the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011!! Wooohoooo!! Ohh I do love the Festival of Speed. Not to mention some lovely summer weather. Isn't it marvellous? But after a brilliant week of meeting lovely Sidepodpeople and watching Realtime Realtime Discussion there there's plenty more going on today as we have a FANTASTIC day of tennis ahead at Wimbledon with semi final action, so keep an eye out for the Wimbledon thread later on!

Oh, and if you're lucky enough to not be working today and heading down to Goodwood, why not meet up with fellow Sidepodpeople and just say hello! Don't be shy, I know for a fact Janna, Kai, Pat and Lou will be meeting up at the main sculpture outside Goodwood House at 12 noon so head over, say hello and meet the absolute legends that these people are. You won't regret it I promise!

Paddock News

Well you wanted a car for your birthday, be grateful! - What better way to start the daily than with a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! It is the birthday of smily smily Carol Smilie Daniel Ricciardo and what better way to celebrate than with a drive...for..uh, HRT. OK so it ain't great but Daniel will be replacing Karthikeyan from Silverstone. Let's remember Narain's legendary moments, like that time [INSERT MEMORY WHEN IT HAPPENS]. Legen-dary! On the topic of HRT, they're having a shuffle like a Chunk tribute act and Colin Kolles is stepping back, yay! On the downside there are rumours of him joining Williams. Spine. shivering. scary.

A man who keeps his feet on the ground, but in the sky - I find it ironic that a man like Mark Webber who clearly has his feet so firmly on the ground his shadow is getting a bit sick of the weight to be learning to fly but it seems the Foo Fighters have inspired Mr Webber to become a pilot with their song Learn to Fly. OK, so maybe they didn't, but Qantas are supporting Mark in his bid to become a pilot. Very awesome side project to have, really!

Stone Cold Grand Prix Austin - Good news for the people of America and the Six Million Dollar Man and any other Austin related name as the Austin councillers have approved for the F1 to go ahead and for everything to be ready for the 2012 United States Grand Prix. I'm quite excited by this you know. I'm not sure why really, maybe it's because it's in Austin and that reminds me of this Austin but I dunno, it'll be fantastic for the US to have a race. Wales too. Yes, Wales needs a race. *nods to self*

Elsewhere

Off down the Parc Ferme with some buddies - Fancy some good podcasting action to listen to today? Make sure you check out Leigh's fantastic latest podcast with Alexander Rossi of World Series of Renault fame and commentator John Hindhaugh join him. I have no idea how Leigh manages to get names like that onto his podcast but it's incredibly impressive and you'd really be missing out if you didn't give it a listen.

A bit of music and a lot more mud - You've gotta love Glastonbury. After a weekend of music filled awesome and plenty of changeable weather there's always lots of brilliant atmospheric photos and the Big Picture is no exception. Big props to the brilliant older couple jamming it with a reggae band inside the reggae tent in this list, love their spirit and just getting down some smooth moves! Although you just have to look at picture 20. I'm not even ruining it for you. You just have to see it for yourself. Bassano would be proud of that guy. Impressive though!

History Wistory Timey Wimey - I know what you're thinking. It's something we all think every day - what would an illustrated history of the world look like? Yes, a common thought up there with Why is EJ still speaking and How do they make Hob Nobs so sturdy?! Of course, this little illustration is just so cool and I had to share it. Maybe it's the thought of Romans enjoying their beer or a dude splitting time but I just love it and it's very true too!

Little Linkables

Let's throw a few final little things out there to end the day on.

Fancy some cheap PC gaming action today? Steam have started their summer sale and the list is absolutely ridiculous. It truly is. And that list isn't even complete yet - it's only 2/3 full! Absolutely silly. I notice every single Sims 3 game out with the many expansions for £50... considering that's about 8 titles...

Maybe gaming isn't your thing, that's cool. Can I tempt you with this marvellous little collection of Shaun of the Dead posters as created by various designers? They're all so utterly genius and the creativity is mindblowing, everyone one of them could be a movie poster!

Oh, and here's a little bit of news for you - turns out it wasn't Michael Jackson in The Simpsons. Man, I could've told you this 20 years ago! It was Leon Kompowsky after all! Duh! Doh, as that Homer chap would say. I miss The Simpsons being absolutely amazing. It's so hard to watch now...

...and if any of the above doesn't attract you in any way this video will because EVERYONE loves penguins!

And that's me done for the week. I'm so excited for Goodwood tomorrow when I head down there and bask in all it's Goodwoodiness. Whatever you're doing today whether it be work, at home, at Goodwood or watching the tennis or anything, have a brilliant day and come and say hello in the comments! Have a fabulous, positive Friday!

quite confused. they gave him a passenger plane to learn to fly in? where's he gonna go from there, the red arrows?

It starts on the GP track then instead of turning right to return to the main straight they turn left onto the Nordschleife.

Mm, I know I should but I've been up until 3am all week and not getting up until 10.30 at the earliest. Sleeping before 2 wasn't ever going to happen but getting up before 8 might hurt..

Hopefully there will be mobile signal on Friday if not Saturday.

I have been. But at the moment what's happened is that she's over tired so she's too tired to sleep and a bit upset about that. Because she was in a special care unit at the hospital for a week she finds quiet a bit scary. We could just cave and have the radio on overnight but eventually it will need to be dealt with... So for now we are trying to keep it dark and quiet overnight and mostly she's been fine, but when things get a bit much it's time for a bit of noisy tv mainly stuff with talking hence news 24.

Currently she's listening to the tv and being fed. Then I have to change her nappy.

  • Alex Andronov01/07/2011 at 02:34

Wait BBC 2 has just become pages from cefax! I didn't know they still did that!

I see that yesterday you worked until midnight to make it ;)

    4am and then some :)

have been trying to get it published for about five days. yesterday it was going up, sleep or not.

So then you spent 4 hours making the page, as I see you took the photos at midnight :)

Is that you're iPhone? I want one!

Someone had to keep Giggles company.

  • Mr C01/07/2011 at 09:48

also, for what it's worth, lurking at the bottom of the f1minute homepage is a google +1 button. can see it getting about as much use as google wave, but it's there as a trial:

Tabs from Virgin said the same yesterday morning with regards to a different story. Is this just Autosport sticking as many tags into headline to generate page views

ahh, you're not making a podcast, you're making audio files.

A podcast (or non-streamed webcast) is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication.

    :)

  • Alex Andronov01/07/2011 at 13:09

I have downloaded a few in iTunes, but they're just audio files though, surely?

The rss bit is a text file in a special format that explains how all the audio files fit together into a series. Eg. Episode 1, title Hello word, published on 24 April, description: my first podcast, file: hello.mp3

And when episode 2 is ready the file will need to have added to it the details of the second show.

Apple doesn't host your files so it needs to be told where to go and find them. And this file is what does that.

  • Mr C01/07/2011 at 13:09

    [utterly confused]

sorry. erm, it's just xml text and tags, but that's easy for me to say

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/07/2011 at 13:10

    What a great collection.

I always find it odd looking at someone looking happy in a photo when you know they died soon after it. 4 photos after smiling in #21 Christa McAuliffe died.

I love #26. Shame we didn't ever get to see shuttles stacked like this on a regular basis. Like Concorde we never got to see the potential delivered.

I remember the mission when #30 was taken. We thought that all spacewalkers in future would be untethered and use those jetpacks.

  • Alex Andronov01/07/2011 at 13:12

Depends on the blogging platform you are using. You have a blog yes?

I did type soundcloud podcast iTunes into google and it seems to suggest they might do the leg work for you: http://blog.soundcloud.com/2011/01/13/calling-all-podcasters/

    Yep - on Wordpress

  • Alex Andronov01/07/2011 at 13:14

    Yep - on Wordpress

But the audio files are on soundcloud?

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/07/2011 at 13:15

But the audio files are on soundcloud?

Aye - I just link the soundcloud files to the post

  • Alex Andronov01/07/2011 at 13:18

Aye - I just link the soundcloud files to the post

Ok... So... Normally soundcloud links take you to a soundcloud page right...

If you add /download to the link it should take you directly to the mp3 file.

Can you try that and see if it asks you if you want to download the file?

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/07/2011 at 13:19

    It does

Ok. On your wordpress post for the podcast you now need to add some extra info which is basically going to say, "if you are iTunes this is how you find the mp3 on soundcloud".

You need to edit the post, scroll down to where it says custom field, add a field name of enclosure and put a value of the soundcloud link with the /download

Then update your post and put a link to the post here so I can check it.

  • Marti01/07/2011 at 13:30

When you subscribe to a podcast in iTunes, it is just pointing you in the right direction of the files. It isn't delivering them.

And because soundcloud doesn't yet have a way of talking to iTunes directly we are using your blog to point the way... So iTunes is now looking at your blog which is saying hey look at these files over on soundcloud.

F: There's a toggle behind the left knee; flip it back to 'Factory Settings' and hold the red button until it bleeps.

The annoying thing is that we could switch to that time... except you have to do all kinds of things like go to the hospital outpatents and have health visitor visits and so on and all of this happens during the day.

I've never known a baby to be able to stay awake all day

That's the problem they are supposed, at this age, to sleep for about 16.5 hours a day... When the awake time happens is kind of up to her... If you wake her up too much during the day she will get mega cross and then not sleep properly and then everything will quickly go out of balance... Apparently the plan is to just keep things nice and noisy in the day time, and quiet and dark at night and she'll work it out...

  • Mr C01/07/2011 at 18:11

  • Steven Roy01/07/2011 at 18:12

That's the problem they are supposed, at this age, to sleep for about 16.5 hours a day... When the awake time happens is kind of up to her... If you wake her up too much during the day she will get mega cross and then not sleep properly and then everything will quickly go out of balance... Apparently the plan is to just keep things nice and noisy in the day time, and quiet and dark at night and she'll work it out...

All those experts and they expect the kid to figure it out

not as bad as canada though, you signed up to watch cars race and they did. or am i missing something?

  • Marti01/07/2011 at 18:48

    Evening everyone :)

  • Bassano01/07/2011 at 18:49

not as bad as canada though, you signed up to watch cars race and they did. or am i missing something?

The racing in Canada, when it occurred, was fantastic.

The weather got in the way and the race redeemed itself for the earlier Safety Car silliness. Valencia proved nothing can save it. Poor Spain, having 2 poor F1 races. At least Barcelona wasn't too bad this year

  • Bassano01/07/2011 at 18:49

    Hi Marti

  • Bassano01/07/2011 at 18:50

No, most of the time, they just circulated. I didn't see much racing :D

  • Mr C01/07/2011 at 18:51

No, most of the time, they just circulated. I didn't see much racing :D

No, most of the time, they just circulated. I didn't see much racing :D

I guess someone has watched the Valencia race again hehe.

To be honest: I liked it. Well, obviously it wasn't as exciting as the Monaco GP or the Canadian one, but considering VSC's history I think it was a huge success.

Although, I must say I hate that track. I don't know why it's in the calendar. #longlifecircuitdecatalunya

    Looking forward to Silverstone though

  • Alison01/07/2011 at 18:55

We'll have to agree to disagree then

People weren't stuck in a trulli train though were they? More like fastest cars qualified at the front and drove away. End of story.

  • Marti01/07/2011 at 18:55

    Looking forward to Silverstone though

Me too! It's probably one of the best week-ends of the year :)

Although I wonder what will we feel when we see those cars running flatout in front of the old pit-lane builiding.

I also wonder if we will see any overtaking in the first lap, because the first curve is quite wide...

  • Mr C01/07/2011 at 18:56

People weren't stuck in a trulli train though were they? More like fastest cars qualified at the front and drove away. End of story.

they didn't even drive away until right at the end. vettel was pegged at just a few seconds most of the race

  • Marti01/07/2011 at 19:04

if it doesn't we have more stickers .

  • Christine01/07/2011 at 20:40

General ideas and principles aren't exactly plagiarism

Yea. I mean, you can't copyright the fact that someone changed their gearbox, you could potentially claim the way you present the information is yours alone, but I would have thought it wasn't an unusual concept for F1 data type people.

  • Pat W01/07/2011 at 20:40

    interesting accusation from manipe: https://twitter.c…86894076993077248

    accusing mav of plagiarism.

Odd. Mav and Jackie always, always credit when they use something.. If they didn't credit, I'd be pretty sure they did the stats themselves.

you'll have to make it to a meet again then! We should make it a challenge to attend f1/ motorsporty places and put a sticker somewhere.

My aim is to be on the grounds by 10.30 at the latest. There's a Croft/Petrov/Senna interview on the Lotus stand at 10.30.

Not only was I late leaving this morning but I also had a lot of very slow (15mph) traffic.

Yeah. He's presenting Sky's show which goes out on Sunday afternoon/evening. We saw him from a long distance on the Sky studio/balcony opposite the house, he had a small boy with him which wasn't Ant.

    Evening.

I don't think it's possible sadly. I'm going to the UK to see my Grandparents and hang out with my parents, who I haven't seen for 3 years. We have 6 days in the UK and then they come to Denmark for 10 days. They've never been here before so I'm quite nervous!

    Hi Gavin

I did suggest someone check with you before getting excited.

If you post it, they will come :D

Of course. I just wanted to make sure that it shouldn't be involving me at all, because I just can't do it this time. But there definitely should be a more Northern meet up than London. The Donington Collection instantly springs to mind...

  • startledbunny01/07/2011 at 22:35

Mevio host podcasts for free, and create the feed for you, so you don't have to. The only drawback, is it's Mevio, and it's a tad clunky, but does the job, and gives you stats too.
