The cliffs of Møn, quite nice really...

Well hello there.  I’m sorry I haven’t been around much lately, but I’ve been rather busy, what with a big project at work and all.  I spent Saturday going to visit some lovely white cliffs on a road trip with friends (see pic above), while on Sunday I went for a run and took my lovely wife out to lunch and shopping (I got me some Angry Birds Plushies that make noises!) before watching the F1 in the evening.  I didn’t think much to the race, but you can rate the race and add your thoughts here.

Joe Saward has been writing a lot, especially about a certain article relating to Indycar and a circuit boycott.  A very good read!

There have been plenty of posts on Sidepodcast too – Tweets of the Week, Christine’s Driver and Team Rankings, a post about the latest escapades of Lewis & Jenson, and even Wimbledon posts!

Google are going to launch a service soon called Google+ which could either be the next awesome thing on the web, or just be left to die like Wave was.  Let’s wait and see.

It was the 100th Anniversary of Juan Manuel Fangio’s birth this week, so enjoy some pics of him from the Cahier Archive

Yesterday was also Tamara Ecclestone’s birthday – she got a puppy called Duke and ate loads of Chinese food.  Lucky Girl.

Finally, if you are in the area of London, today is the Sidepodmeetup at the Coal Hole Pub at 7ish.  Why not pop by for a beer and chat?  Meetups are always awesome.

Sadly I won’t be able to make it, but I do have tickets to see the Senna Movie tonight, so if all bodes well I will finally get to see it!

Have fun everyone, and enjoy your day.

I was just thinking on Monday that I haven't see much of you lately..

Speaking of Chinese food I have chicken noodle soup right now, sadly not from the local Chinese takeaway but from a packet.

hooray, have booked tickets to Senna for me and Pamela. We are not going to the first screening at the Melbourne Film Festival on the 22nd July as its on at the same time as free practice for Germany, so we're going to the GP Advantage member screening on the 27th. Price includes a drink on arrival and small drink and small popcorn for the movie. Bonus!

Crying seems to be almost compulsory at this film. I just love that people are getting some idea what that period was like. We have seen nothing like it and I doubt we ever will

I am not sure I can recall any successful product launch by Google in recent years. anytime they come up with something that should compete with something that already is out there they fail. Chrome is the only exception...

Perhaps they would be better off to continue doing what they do best - make money from they search engine dominance and spend them purchasing proven products (like YouTube that killed their own Google Video). But who am I to advise the billions of dollars worth company :-)

What's important is that Google can answer the question, "how can it become relevant in the lives of our users?" Wave was a fantastic piece of tech, but since Google couldn't quite make it relevant for us, it became nothing more than a passing fancy. Same goes for Google+.

We can discuss forever how relevant was Wave or is/was Buzz etc. But at the end it is all about marketing. Company with such marketing power and reach should be able to convince masses that their products are relevant and among the best out there. It really puzzles me that Google keeps failing in the marketing area ...

Honestly, it's because they never needed to. They didn't need to sell AdWords or YouTube or even GMail. Those services pretty much sold themselves without a Google ad in sight.

  • F1Wolf29/06/2011 at 05:04

Honestly, it's because they never needed to.

their recent launch success history suggests otherwise ...

YouTube - sure they did not need to market it, they just needed to buy it :-)

GMail - that was a good one as at the time when they came up with gmail they offered more space than anybody else and allowed bigger attachments than anybody else. plus it was and still is simple.

this google plus the more I read the more complicated it seems :-)

I got my Gmail account for the extra space which I didn't really need because I'm not an email hoarder :D Also because my Hotmail account had become ravaged by spam and 7 years later I can count on one hand the number of spam emails that have made it into my Gmail inbox. The final reason was because no one else I knew was on Gmail so getting an invite made me feel special :D

    Front running cars win races.

They have won races so yes.

Have they built the best car? Maybe not. But they have been able to win both races and a chamiponship, they probably should have had 2.

  • Leigh O'Gorman29/06/2011 at 09:31

    Morning Journeyer

  • Journeyer29/06/2011 at 09:31

So what's everyone's thoughts on Macca? Give up on 2011 or push until the final races?

See what happens at Silverstone. If RBR are still significantly ahead, it may be time to focus on 2012.

That said, there aren't any big rules changes between this year and next, so it may not hurt for McLaren to keep releasing updates until late into the year.

  • Marti29/06/2011 at 09:31

It wasn't this ad, but Pepsi scarred MJ for life...

I find them ever so slightly underwhelming in recent years, after the fireworks of 2007/2008 they seem to have dropped off ever so slightly. They'll always build a car there or thereabouts but where is the killer edge they're missing at present etc

  • Journeyer29/06/2011 at 09:34

Have we seen them build a truly front running car in recent years? Pains me to say it but i'm looking back to pre 2000 to see one

Yes. They should've won both titles in 2007 and did win the WDC in 2008. Their strength has always been the depth of their engineering pool. They weren't hurt so much when Newey left. They're now facing the same test again with Pat Fry.

  • Journeyer29/06/2011 at 09:34

I must have missed their victory this year

Good point! :D But they'll win one - maybe Spa.

  • Leigh O'Gorman29/06/2011 at 09:35

They were top of the table in 2008, but only lost it because of the spy scandal

Oh defo agree re Ferrari....their saving grace is the years 2000-2004 and 2007

  • Elissa29/06/2011 at 09:37

Can Newey be seriously making all that difference? Stuff Alonso and his 6 tenths...grab Newey and gain a second per lap!

  • F1Wolf29/06/2011 at 09:37

  • Journeyer29/06/2011 at 09:38

IIRC, they would've won the WCC anyway in 2007 even if McLaren weren't DSQed - mostly because of the Hungary penalty.

Can Newey be seriously making all that difference?

I would say he can. But is not only about one person but about the team that person can build around. Just recall the interview with Fernandes last Sunday. When they asked him if money or people is what is needed for them to break into the solid midfield he himself said that money is important but at the end it is about the people you have ...

  • Journeyer29/06/2011 at 09:41

Can Newey be seriously making all that difference? Stuff Alonso and his 6 tenths...grab Newey and gain a second per lap!

Yes. Newey has won titles with Williams (Mansell, Prost, and D. Hill when he was around, with J. Villeneuve winning in a Newey-derived car), McLaren (Hakkinen), and now Red Bull (Vettel). The only guy in the modern era who's had similar success is Ross Brawn.

He thrives on rules changes - that's when he can find an extra something to vault a team to the front. He tends to struggle when he's joining a team playing catch-up to those up front (See Red Bull, 2005-2008). But when the new rules came, they were suddenly up there.

  • Leigh O'Gorman29/06/2011 at 09:41

Don't leave Horner out either. Regardless of what people think, the team built and managed there are hugely responsible for their success too.

When they asked him if money or people is what is needed for them to break into the solid midfield he himself said that money is important but at the end it is about the people you have ...

Honda and Toyota are solid examples of money not buying success.

I wonder if newey will be around in 2014, he could jump to a new/old team (williams/lotus maybe) or go to the americas cup.

Given how the technical rules have been loosened for that it must be more tempting than ever

  • F1Wolf29/06/2011 at 09:42

Honda at least managed to put some team together that brought success eventually. Unfortunately for Honda Honda was not there any longer at that time :-)

  • Journeyer29/06/2011 at 09:42

Very good point. He was the guy who lured Newey to Red Bull, after all. Also, he gave Newey what he wanted - technical freedom. They've reaped the results ever since.

It depends if he wants another challenge. So far what he touched eventually turned into gold. Any new challenge would mean risking his 100% record :-)

Part of that was Brawn going in and kicking ****. Had it stayed the way it was, 2009 may not have been anywhere near as successful for Honda.

    Poor management and all that.

It wasnt exactly luring, newey was supposed to go there 2 or 3 years before but mclaren gave him more cash.

Matershitz gave newey the budget needed to get him

Ok.....would Macca be doing better if Ron was in charge?

  • Journeyer29/06/2011 at 09:47

Ok.....would Macca be doing better if Ron was in charge?

Hmmm. Tricky question. I don't think they'd be doing worse, but I don't necessarily think they'll be doing any better, either. They have totally different leadership styles, but both may lead to the same results.

  • @Twiger (Nick)29/06/2011 at 09:47

Ok.....would Macca be doing better if Ron was in charge?

Progress efficiency would exist in correlation the critical external factors of the period inferred

  • Leigh O'Gorman29/06/2011 at 09:52

and that brings us back to the people :-)

I've always mained that "a driver" is always a team - it really is a case of a chain only being as strong as the weakest link. For example, how many races sid McLaren lose in 2005 because of poor Mercedes engine? Everything else worked and Kimi was driving impecably, but the Mercedes motor often let them down.

There are so many third party elements to a team (i.e. - engines, ECU's, tyres, etc...), let alone the car designers - therefore when it comes down to it, a driver can only be given an oportunity to win if all the tools come together. And this doesn't take into account pitcrews, stratagists, etc...

Ok.....would Macca be doing better if Ron was in charge?

I'm not sure. I think part of Ron's success was the fact that Martin Whitmarsh was there too.

He is a great driver, but anyway, it's fair to say that he hasn't done nothing that Alguersuari did before.

I am not saying that he is not talented, he is!

And I thing Ricciardo won't be at Red Bull. Today Horner said that the team wanted Webber to stay for another year.

  • Leigh O'Gorman29/06/2011 at 12:56

It's not just the results. It's hard to describe, but there's something about his craft that seems a step up from Buemi / Alguersuari

  • Mark29/06/2011 at 12:59

It's not just the results. It's hard to describe, but there's something about his craft that seems a step up from Buemi / Alguersuari

If he is as good as Vettel, then RB could easily have a boring version of the Senna/Prost inter-team battle, with those two winning every race of the season.

  • Marti29/06/2011 at 12:59

It's not just the results. It's hard to describe, but there's something about his craft that seems a step up from Buemi / Alguersuari

I've seen him racing in the World Series and he has that special speed. He only needs luck, because if he has it then he'll rock this world.

I think Buemi is the one who's going to leave STR. He is the older one and his results are not as good as his team expected, I don't see him racing in Red Bull, although Alguersuari is still too young.

ps. Sorry for my english, I know I make lots of mistakes when I try to write long setences.

It's a great little series and fast creeping up on GP2 as the formula of choice, especially when you consider that Red Bull have ditched GP2 on the basis that it's not worth it.

WS also has backing from Renault (obviously), but also contains squads from Virgin and Team Lotus too.

It depends on your angle. Are you telling us about your favourite online game? Or trying to convince us why we should join in? Or perhaps just telling the story of how you got started and why you love it?

I was thinking more in regards to the community aspect of it...I knows there's a few peeps on here who do have consoles and race. I don't think any of them do it with a real kinda dedication or possibly know where to go. Console racing can get quite a samey and boring past time if you don't have any decent friends to race against. Suppose I could down the route of explaining my favourite game and it all relates (which is Forza 3) but was wary of that as games tend to divide people just like drivers do. I'm part of the Xbox crowd which typically means the PS fans hate us and then the PC fans lord it over everyone...

Yeah I find iRacing a little overtly elitist for the sake of it, plus you don't actually own anything you buy. You just rent cars, tracks for a year etc....that to me just grates me a little. You really have to splash out to get more tracks and better cars. They have some great ideas to stop idiots runing races (a common problem in console gaming) and I'd like to see them implemented on Xbox live or PS network

Evening?! Where are you in the world? It's not even tea time in the 'shire' here.

I find the f1 2010 racing online annoying at best, if you get past the first corner carnage you're either used as a brake into the next corner or people just quit the race and leave you trundling around on your own. I've never tried the online racing on GT5 and would be interested in how that compares to Forza.

Forza has it's idiots (had a bloke reverse off the startline last night!) but they're much easier to kick out of lobbies before races as you soon get used to knowing who's a crasher and who's clean. Most of us meet in the public lobbies then go off into our own private races.

You a big fan of some of the N.American venues? I'm a huge fan of Road Atlanta, Road America, Sebring etc...

Elkhart Lake is a fabulous circuit (and a rival for a Spa in the top circuits category), but also a big fan of Portland and Mid Ohio.

Loving the rumours that Elkhart Lake may be a goer for IndyCar in 2012...

I haven't raced Portland yet...big fan of Mid Ohio though...I think we can be guilty of writing US tracks off over here as people just think Ovals by default....

  • Matt G29/06/2011 at 15:28

Well, technically morning here in Sydney...

GP2edit.com had sooo many mods, I even had the 98 car shapes loaded in to replace the 'old' 94 ones :D

Aye - some of the road circuits in the US just flow so naturally. Great fun to drive

  • Matt G29/06/2011 at 15:29

I like Road's America & Atlanta, I'd like a game with Elkhart Lake & Watkins Glen so i can play there

I like the rustic feel to them, not huge tilkerdromes emblazzoned with bling architecture etc...shame they're not used much by World Championships...

  • Matt G29/06/2011 at 15:31

A very early morning at that

later & later these days.... :/

  • Leigh O'Gorman29/06/2011 at 15:33

I like the rustic feel to them, not huge tilkerdromes emblazzoned with bling architecture etc...shame they're not used much by World Championships...

True, but a few of them are only Grade 2, so they'd need a lot of work to make it in.

  • Matt G29/06/2011 at 15:34

The only Tilke-drome i'd like to see again is the A1 Ring (now Red Bull Ring), that was an epic track, simple, but had some killer corners.

Actually had some good racing too, a rare thing in the late 90's/early 00's

  • Elissa29/06/2011 at 15:34

True, but a few of them are only Grade 2, so they'd need a lot of work to make it in.

Hardly any would be good would they? Who's got G1 status...apart form Indy I struggle to think who would get it...Maybe Laguna Seca at a push

Evening (already?). I've come back from a long-ish round of golf in Weymouth, I lost by six shots and made some silly errors, and a few times the ball had a mind of its own, but it was a really really nice day and a good walk.

The clouds encircling most of the rest of Dorset stayed well away from the course, bright blue skies there. :)

Nice to see you enjoyed your day.

Here in spain the wheather is awful, it's just too hot!

    Why doesn't it rain a bit? :)

    This is a good week.

It was hot on the course, weirdly I came home (15 miles roughly) and it is a lot cooler.

  • Pat W29/06/2011 at 16:24

I just got an email that I booked my first paying voice over job! All that GarageBand messing around on Sunday paid off. Wow. I can't believe it.

    Congrats!

  • Pat W29/06/2011 at 16:31

We just went and visited a factory that makes tools for us to use out in the field. I'm not lying when I tell you that the precision and workmanship is right up there with F1 standards!

It is amazing how advanced some of the farm machinery is. I thought the tractor drivers just drove up and down field all day but apparently the speed is governed by computer, especially when seeding and the seeds have to be distributed evenly over the field. You set how many seeds you want dropped per metre and it tells the tractor what speed to go.. Madness!

It's well-known the fact that Jochen (killed in Monza 1970, I think) was one of the best real 'friends' Bernie has had in this sport.

The proof was in the pudding.

I know, it was very weak of me to ask for help, but I was without a tv! And I'm American! It's a problem.

True. You make a good point that I didn't think of at the time.

Never trust a man with a kettle on top of his fridge.

these are two very different takes on the same story:

    BBC News

    Local news in Hong Kong

I would say that assisting police and getting arrested is not exactly the same.
