Good day and welcome to the middle day of the middle week of the year. I do hope you are enjoying your week - we've had some great sporting action this week from the F1, the football and Wimbledon. The football is taking a rest day today, but there should be some great tennis action, with a post coming up later for it...

Well that's all from me - I hope you have a great day and enjoy the break from the football in the next couple of days...

7 minutes at 1am is better than having to drive in to town from the office at lunchtime and queue :)

I should be in bed. New hours mean starting 30 mins earlier, but i have a stocktake to do at our other place so I'm sorting stuff for the car on an SD card. Aside on the way, music on the way back.

kinda like saying "would you like to pay to come walk around our welding plant for the day."

    nope.

are you offering me a tour of a welding plant?

  • paul30/06/2010 at 11:38

Ah. I see heat you are saying

  • me30/06/2010 at 11:38

Really? I would pay that to tour Mclaren

mclaren is different. as probably is ferrari. lotus' factory looks just like a factory.

    AHHHHHH!!!!

Just watched the latest mclaren viral video. What a place that warehouse is!

    I want to go there!!

I am loving those videos they are making

  • me30/06/2010 at 12:04

    worth embedding, i reckon.

it's probably worth a post of it's own, but i have no recollection of the eras / drivers they're talking about. has anyone seen the monaco footage they describe?

I watched it yesterday, I love the history of F1, that video is just mindblowing as to how many cars McLaren have produced.

Wow I do, and yes I have. The mp4/4 and mp4/5 are ,my favoritist cars ever

  • James30/06/2010 at 12:07

Still don't buy that Lewis and Jenson are quite that close, but still its nice to see them making an effort ;)

  • me30/06/2010 at 12:08

just something about why the video is so cool, and what makes the those cars special etc?

    no probs.

  • paul30/06/2010 at 12:11

I love it that mclare keep their cars. Ferrari would have an amazing collection, but I think they seek most of theirs

  • paul30/06/2010 at 12:12

    no probs.

I feel bad now, but work is being crazy

  • James30/06/2010 at 12:12

Seeing that McLaren keep their cars it makes me sad to see that other teams don't treat them quite the same. I saw pictures of either the 2004 or 05 Renault in this years colours and with last years rear wing.

It actually makes me want to find out where all the championship winning cars are. :D

  • me30/06/2010 at 12:13

don't feel bad. i'd do it myself, but the whole thing is meaningless to me. i liked the williams from that era. i didn't support mclaren at all.

McLaren do that to some of theirs though, I really didn't enjoy seeing Kimi's car painted to appear that it belonged to Lewis :(

don't even think about what they did to the brawn.

  • James30/06/2010 at 12:16

don't even think about what they did to the brawn.

Jenson wanted his chassis from last year, I think they gave him a different one in the end.

The R26 is apparently in Renault’s “Histoire et Collection” heritage collection in Paris. It better not have this years livery.

The mp4/4 was the 1988 car. 15 wins from 16 races. The 4/5 and 4/5b followed that up with championships with the Honda v12. Sensational

You know, the first 3.5l after the turbos. That was they grerat thing about the 4/4, it was the last turbo, and it still beat the normally aspirated cars.

I've just seen the video - it's all about the MP4/4, which is after the kiwi period, but basically the exact period I started watching F1. Which is probably true for Jenson too, as he's about a year older than me...

Not a clue, perhaps its as a punishment... but will only have a bad effect on them as a whole.

FIFA warned the French government not to meddle into that team as well...

Most famously, there was Monaco in 1988, when he put his car on pole position, 1.5 seconds quicker than Prost in the same car.

He later said he felt as if he was driving on instinct, watching himself from above.

it's probably worth a post of it's own, but i have no recollection of the eras / drivers they're talking about. has anyone seen the monaco footage they describe?

Great video, they're clearly both in awe of that era. To me McLaren were the evil empire against my team, Williams.. See it a bit differently now of course.

Motorsport Magazine have a map of Goodwood for those who are going: http://www.mot…he-festival-of-speed/

Looks like the one from the programme, good to see it a little early , ta.

Interesting that the new motor show bit is alongside the start line, last year they had a fairground thing there and I didn't even bother going around there because it's a bit of a hassle waiting for the track to clear so you can cross and a long walk the other way. Might take a look this time rather than go up to the rally thing.

From TED's column, he's talking about the Hulk being too tall to use the current F duct solution from Williams and then he says this:

The team say they will have this fixed by Silverstone to help Hulkenberg (who wears contact lenses in the car, unusually for an F1 driver) score more than the single point he has managed so far.

    Non-sequitur of the day.

I ask that about life quite often too.

  • Alex Andronov30/06/2010 at 18:13

So Mr C did you see that the iPhone 4 is using Helvetica Neue rather than boring old Helvetica (apparently because there are better low-res hinting versions of traditional Helvetica available for the older models). But now they can properly render Helvetica Neue on the Retina display they can switch to it. Of course this made me think... How soon until we see the end of "screen fonts"?

  • Alex Andronov30/06/2010 at 18:16

I ask that about life quite often too.

    Understandibly.

I observed a conversation once where a guy was talking about Unicorns. He was accused of being... Well he was considered by some of the group to be less than macho. His response lives with me, "tell me what's weak about weaponised horses?"

  • Christine30/06/2010 at 18:17

    didn't see that, nope.

i would imagine eventually the need for screen fonts will become less important. the problem we as users have, is that apple have a shocking record when it comes to typography. microsoft are kicking their backsides.

if we have to rely on apple for the future of readability, we all may as well head over to specasavers in the morning.

Oooh fight. The thing is that Microsoft hammer the fonts into the shape of the pixels. Apple blur the fonts to, as far as they are concerned "be truer to the font", and as far as most normal people are concerned "make them blurry".

But in the end fonts will be the same as they are printed. Why don't I have a 300 dpi monitor yet? This iPhone changes your outlook completely everything looks rubbish after.

  • Leigh O'Gorman30/06/2010 at 18:24

microsoft have invested in making a reader friendly collection of screen fonts from top designers. apple don't even have an italic version of their primary operating system font 10 years after it's introduction. they are hopeless at typography.

But in the end fonts will be the same as they are printed. Why don't I have a 300 dpi monitor yet?

i think mainly because you sit an awful lot farther away from it than you do a mobile phone.

  • Alex Andronov30/06/2010 at 18:34

i think mainly because you sit an awful lot farther away from it than you do a mobile phone.

But the problem is that if you are doing print work (I know that is the past) you will prefer the Mac rendering because it fills the same space on the page that it will when it is printed. But if the monitors were higher resolutions then you wouldn't need to do hinting.

microsoft have invested in making a reader friendly collection of screen fonts from top designers. apple don't even have an italic version of their primary operating system font 10 years after it's introduction. they are hopeless at typography.

The italic thing is terrible. For fun they have forgotten to include Helvetica Neue Italic on the iPhone 4. So if you use System.italic you don't get italic anymore. Idiots.

Way scarier than Webber's. Going over the barriers in a single seater

Apparently he came back and won a race later on. The other dude got a telling off!

webber's was probably the weakest of the three - kral's accident on sunday morning was absolutely frightening

the guy in front cut right across the front of williams though - very dangerous stuff

I don't have a picture of it - I took one of the 1993 McLaren instead (it's kinda the centrepiece).

MP4/4 looks pretty unique because there is no airbox above the driver's head and the engine cover is very low

I tend not to wear caps often but I started collecting them because they're cheaper and smaller than the 1/18 cars. I'd quite like some more t-shirts or polo shirts but often they're either rubbish or too expensive. My only decent one (Williams) is getting old and tatty now. :(
