It is Tuesday already, but what a weekend! Or more specifically - what a lovely Sunday! It was fantastic to see all my favourite Germans going all out for the victory. Could either win have been more comprehensive? But enough gloating from me. Let us move on to more pleasant stuff, like the bulletpoints that yesterday brought.
- Okay, this isn't really moving on. But if you haven't yet chipped in on the debate over the steward's penalty that failed to penalize Hamilton, please do. Nothing is better than rehashing how completely incompetent some of them seem to be.
- Most may have grown bored of it, but not Luca. The Ferrari president continues his moaning on their official race debrief. No wonder they chose Alonso to be their driver over Kimi.
- Leigh has updated on the Valencia weekend, as well as the picture of the day.
- Frankly, I found that accident horrific. But Mr. Rubber Goat has found something positive that came out of it. Debate over who is at fault is still raging. Maybe we need a breakout thread for this incident too?
- F1 wasn't the only race which found Valencia more than a little daunting. GP2 too experienced a frightening race incident.
- Pedro de la Rosa scores his first points! Unfortunately, it is a negative one. I am delighted with Basti's gain though. What a wonderful way of capping a F1 win by rising up Christine's rankings! ;) And I do think he could have earned even more with his helpfulness.
- In case you didn't realize, 'Basti' is the cooler shortened form for 'Sebastian' as opposed to the infantile sounding 'Seb'. Like how 'the Netherlands' sounds more awesome than 'Holland'. Or 'Deutschland' is better that what the other countries come up with.
- Christine has also posted tweets of the week, with di Grassi grabbing the headlines by being (momentarily) P1.
- As if competing on track isn't enough, Lotus has also a finger in the energy drink pie. Maybe Webber's flight was in some way symbolic?
- Joe may have had enough of France. :( Janna suggests a move back to the UK.
- In other sports, R-Andy is out of Wimbledon, while M-Andy proves he doesn't need the Queen's presence to succeed. Novak no longer loses his battles with 'sickness', Federer is back to his winning ways, and Rafa firmly restates that no, he does not need on-court coaching.
- All and sundry would have been mourning over England's defeat to Germany, but the football team has lost more than the match. I think they should 'lose' their bonuses too, if only just to compensate fans for having to watch their performances.
- After the grief, come the inquisition. I need not guide you to the many articles that tore into the English squad, manager and FA, but here is an insight into the supposed English mentality towards competitive sport on a whole that I find interesting.
- By the way, Nick's cat has arrived and is about to take over the world. Much like this one.
- Finally, a quick ping for people who own an iPad or iPhone. Being able to listen to a book while reading sounds cool, but still not enough to move me to buy Apple stuff though.
So hopefully that will be enough to occupy you for awhile. After that, please do join us in the comments, or on the tennis/football breakout threads for more sporting action. With Spain playing and Wimbledon in its last week, there is bound to be something for you to talk about. ;)
Hello new daily. After suggesting Joe would rather be in the UK, @f1photos has been tweeting all evening about problems at Heathrow http://twitter.com/f1photos (language warning). Can't win with travel, I think it's best to stay inside.
f1 armchair coverage rules :)
For people interested in iPhone4 this http://www.freyburg.com/iphone-film-is-amazing.html is interesting. It shows a film entirely produced on the phone. I think the quality is very good.
he's gone a bit planes, trains and automobiles there!
Although for me these days it's desk chair coverage as I'm in front of the pc ;)
can't wait to see the behind the scenes from that. stunning stuff.
That's rather nice. The problem I found with the phone is that it is so easy to put your fingers over the camera. I guess I'm holding it wrong or something ;)
lovely daily marilene. re: this point:
please feel free to publish a breakout topic whenever it seem appropriate. if you have publishing permissions please go ahead, or anyone can send us a post for a breakout via: http://sidepodcast.com/about/writing-a-guest-post/
they must have a crazy tripod set up. i've seen giggle's shaky cam :)
As much as I would love to hate apple even more, thatis very good
I have a mount now, my steadycam is the top of my tripod.
you have a steadycam?
Perhaps they have an iHand http://scoopertino.com/apple-introduces-ihand-the-right-way-to-hold-your-iphone/
i fear this may be a tad excessive for an iphone
that's what i was thinking!
:) :)
No, I have the top part of my tripod, which is basically a short pole, a ball head and a mobile phone bracket from 7DayShop.
imagine this guy http://www.pulcinella-holland.nl/new/productpics/fsproman had an iphone instead of that camera, now that would be funny
How about this: http://store.zacuto.com/Zgrip-iPhone-Pro.html
That costs roughtly $292 more than my solution :)
i miss montoya in f1.
"[Gordon] just didn't give me any room, he never does. He has it coming one day." - JPM
you don't get that from massa do ya.
that is *the* most obserd thing ive ever seen for that amount
another JPM quote ive just been reading...
Yacaman said friend-of-a-friend Juan Pablo Montoya also encouraged him to come to the U.S. “(Montoya) said, dude, there's nothing left in Europe. And Formula 1 is just a big nasty... how you describe it? He just said it wasn't worth it.."
he's not coming back then :)
i think thats a fairly safe bet ;)
Night all :)
me too, night all
tuesday sucks :(
You homeless yet?
It's way too hot to sleep here :( I'm going to die tomorrow. I'm supposed to start work at 6 :S
not homeless yet but off to buy mega cleaing supplies today! but today is freezing and i have heaps of work to do :(
@Mr C
I have e-mailed you tomorrow's Wimbledon post
ooh, that reminds me. is steven doing the wimbledom post today?
spoo.ky
Beat you
that's really freaked me out :)
Anywhere else maybe but it's normal for their to be weird co-incidences here. I think the server must be sited where lay lines meet or something
after wimbledon i am normally so tired i miss the whole us open series and dont watch tennis again until the actual us open in 2 months time. wont do that this year because sleep is overrated.
in case anyone has 5 mins to spare today, we're looking at pulling together a page for sidepodcast related things that new people should watch/listen/read/see first.
basically a "best of sidepodcast" to save us having to deal with that difficult second album.
here's an initial attempt at collating some of the best bits:
http://sidepodcast.com/about/essential-sidepodcast/
we're sure we've missed lots of things out, so please let us know in the comments if there's an essential thing that should be added.
variety is just as important, so we've tried to add things that are unique as well as unmissable. all suggestions welcome and we can remove as well as add.
also, just because i can never remember it. a simple itunes url:
http://sidepodcast.com/itunes/
possibly should have done that 3 years ago.
I think you should include a Joe show as that is the only one being made regularly just now
ooh. good plan. any favourites, or just the latest?
I can't think of a favorite offhand. The latest should do.
ace. also added the recent conversation with stuart, enjoyed that one too.
Good call
Time I was in bed.
Night all
night steven. x1 tennis post is scheduled. catch ya tomorrow.
heheh.

My room, MacBook and MacBook Air and iPod touch and iPhone two and up iPad. This iMac to buy it perfect! Like what I got. So terrible than that of electromagnetic waves.
more profound than ferrari.
just got around to listening to the chequered flag podcast. recorded on a budget airline :)
oh my. jessica is like a female version of so many people here!
:)
even mercedes' f1 website is in despair over their season:

She wont be single long :P
Morning,
Can I just point out that the only positive of Mark Webber's crash is that he walked away uninjured? The comment made above was just a flippant remark mocking the silliness of the Red Bull guys on the grid...
I just bought a lotto ticket, the $50,000,000 is bound to be mine this time!
At least it seems they get good traffic. :D
Hello all.
Heh. It's still a good point, though. :D
In any case, it seems to be working now.
That's enough to move to Europe. :D
it's enough to buy Europe! (well, not quite)
with the Euro plunging at this rate, it juuuust might.
unless China beats you to it. :D
Morning Sidepodpeeps.
Ello Christine. :)
Nice to have a quiet for once (for me, anyway).

It's afternoon where I am. :D
Evening Sidepodpeeps that are on the other side of the world.
Oh gawd.
I'll just say hello.
i was whispering because you have a headache, not because your greeting was bad :D
:D Ello right back.
Ahh. Appreciated :)
I forget what I tweet.
Pamela is here! Dinner tiiiiime!
Don't forget the pictures!
You can borrow 'go lewis' anytime you like :P
:)
Computers and phones just came back after going down for two hours. We went out for a cup of tea in the sunshine ;)
A post: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/06/29/wont-somebody-think-of-the-children/
Oh dear... my friend who likes to brag when beating me is doing it again with the football picks :(
morning folks
When beating you... up?
Q: how do you get pikachu onto the bus?
A: you poke him on
Hmmm. :)
Oh deary me....
No, when beating me in a competition, like Fantasy Racers or Poker or something else...
Just be right more often? :)
Oh right. Not my field of expertise, I'm afraid, I always lose everything :)
Only an Aussie would say that :P
Would it have been if he was beating me up then? ;)
Yes. Find a stick.
Last time, when he convinced me to take a ride on a 5G Vomit Comet at Tivoli, I got my own back when we went on the bumper cars later ;)
He sounds like a lovely friend!
He's a meanie.
But he always had a couch available for me when I used to live outside of COpenhagen and I came into town for a night out. And he never lets me pay for anything either!
I've been reading about the Russian Spy case in the US and they talk about a process called "Steganography" in images - hiding information inside of pictures and blog posts. Very interesting...
Is anyone here going to the Fans // FOTA forum in London on Thursday?
It's a very interesting process actually. There is another similar process which can hide images in tweets (I don't mean twit pics). People have managed to get incredibly accurate resultion in 140 characters. Think about a 5k picture which would normally be considered small is actually 5120 characters... So 140 characters is tiny... but if you really need to get a hidden in plain site message out...

Morning
morning pat
Thats not my cat!!!
How? What? #Confused!
oh hai nick
:)
The cat is evil, and despite having to chase it, it loves me picking it up and plotting with it....
Soon there'll be talk of military centres inside old volcano's and the issuing of ultimatum's to world leaders... where will it all end?
i am full of pizza and crepes.
Where were the pictures?
Do they go together?
life is hard without a drop.io, I am uploading some now :D
you can have your own.
Phew :)
I keep forgetting that until I'm already out and about :D
We just went out and bought the department Ice Creams.
It was such a chore walking along the waterfront in the sunshine...
Oh, and Paul Allen from Microsoft's yacht is in town...
pizzaaaa :D http://twitpic.com/20yaue
strawberry crepes :D http://twitpic.com/20yazk
I didn't have a proper camera with me :(
YUUUUMMMM
we finished up dinner with a lap around albert park in the renault. It was just like having you and jeremy back!
Hehe.
Wish I was there, especially for dessert!
Nice!
are you going to come to the race again next year?
You bet
hooray! we were discussing tonight all getting tickets together this time, but then again with how early Pamela and I buy them that would require forward planning ;)
Now that I know I want to go, buying early is a good idea.
#lies
:D
the only issue that leaves is people who want to sit on a corner v people who want to sit on pit straight. fangio fo' life :D
Amy forgot to mention that we went past Sam Newman's house with the big Pamela Anderson facade. Not tacky at all.
Fangio on a sunday please.
True enough, but I have done the corner thing.
*Amy knows the best seats*
Melbourne has all the best attractions
I don't understand how I've lived here two years and not known that existed. It should be a major tourist attraction.
Mm, pizza.
That's not just a pizza, that's a MYSTIC PIZZA!!!!
news update: here is Pamela's dinner. it's a lot healthier than mine :D
http://twitpic.com/20yjpz
I won the lotto!..........
.........
........7th division :(
You mean the chicken covered in cheese? Yep v healthy! :P
At least your pizza didn't end up on the floor like those other ppl. But my dessert did almost end up in your handbag. Crap waitress.
You won't be able to quit work with that!
someone needs to teach her how to hold a plate level.
the prize is $12.95 and my ticket cost $13.10. I'm still poorer than when I started :(
But it all looks so yummy! I want to go there.
you've been there!
oh that place :-)
what Pamela had is even exactly the same dish as I got that time :D
I missed the crepes.
Must go back.
After Joe next year :D
We are just discussing whether to see the A-Team movie... the discussion has led to some choice quotes:
Me: "How could you stuff up Transformers? All you needed to have was Robots fighting! All it has to be is 'Robot, Robot, Fight!'"
My colleague "...has a friend in the movie industry that described 'Fight Club' as 'the classic romantic comedy'"!
Unbelievable....
Another ping: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/06/29/lies-and-statistics/
Will be closing the polls very shortly, so if anyone hasn't voted for my July header, it's now or never!
http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/06/26/headers-1-10-you-decide/
Mr C... I have a rediculous feature request... I wonder how simples it would be?
You know that "Active Thread" text up at the top which used to be a link that expanded the body of the post... Could it be a link to the article itself?
I find myself, for some reason often having to click on the link per comment and then having to throw away the #comment number stuff... Very minor request...
By minor I mean unimportant
Oooh I voted... But from home? Maybe I should cheat? No I won't cheat.
You can cheat if you like. I'm a bit concerned that there is currently a two way tie. I hadn't accounted for that!!
Sounds like a run-off vote to me. :D
Lee McKenzie will be hoping to 'rein' in Michael Schumacher this weekend: http://www.leemckenzie.tv/full_story.asp?pageref=60
Maybe the left half of the header can be one and the right half can be the other.
I agree, a run off vote...
We shall see. Closing the polls at 4pm.
You must be pleased that you must have been improving the most recent ones are dominating the vote.
True enough. Although the first one I made has quite a few votes. A bit of an anomaly.
I am mostly surprised that there have been so many votes. People are lovely.
Virgin are learning the rules from Twitter! http://twitter.com/VirginRacing/status/17336791746
I wonder if it's because it's the most sort of personal one? I mean it looks more drawn than the others rather than artistic choices about filters and things. I don't know if it is or not, or if that's why... But it could be.
I'm not sure, I just know that I really really like it!
ftw?
wtf?
acronym fail :)
wtf is ftw?
oh
Maybe because of the lovely shades of blue? Easy on the eyes.
she's more anonymous than pedro.
for the win? :D
eh?
id the same. doohickey development is frozen at the moment. should get to it soon though. at that point the whole design is going out the window.
yeah. asking fans to explain f1 rules in 140 characters is not "win".
Although that would be a fun game.
typing gone to pieces.
i do the same thing. but it's temporary pain.
:)
They did just ask where it is in the rules, not what the exact rule is. :)
Heh. Too true. :D
http://twitter.com/VirginRacing/status/17338087304
Interesting. A bit of a rant from them, that.
I like that the #justcurious hashtag is blatantly #notjustcuriousbutquiteannoyedreally
:)
:)
Cool... understood...
not that it matters but what I meant was that up at the top in the doohicky is the dropdown where you select the active thread. And next to it is some text which says, "Active Thread". I was thinking that text could be a link to whatever was selected on the left.
But after the redesign it wont matter.
ahh, okay.
yeah, it'll be gone :)
more soon.
Hope it's muticoloured threads in a giant rainbowhicky
*joke*
html5 has a new colour picker control.
just sayin'
:)
In an ideal world each thread would be a different colour and at the top their would be a unicorn horn showing. We would all be able to customise the colours and if one day you choose the correct colour pattern then an animated unicorn would slide out from behind the doohicky.
*ahem*
I mean trucks... with really big wheels... covered in dirt...
*ahem*
;)
http://twitpic.com/20zwjj
yay :)
Skips off into the sunset :)
Oh lord.
hmm?
http://twitpic.com/20zxln
ALEX!!! Look what you've done!
Yet another ping: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/06/29/and-the-winning-header-is/
#sorrychristine :)
the future of doohickey is the sparkly unicorn. panda's be damned.
http://bit.ly/9XVB8o
Yaaaay! :D
so Mr C's unicorn vs. Christine's panda. Perhaps they should go head-to-head. :D
uh oh!!! Don't say things like that Mr C... You'll make Christine angry! The unicorns don't like it when Christine's angry...
Nonsense. At least pandas actually EXIST.
Just.
you want a horned (albeit mythical) animal to attack a fluffy panda?
:) :) :)
a panda is still a bear, though. ;)
:D
http://www.googlebattle.com/?domain=Unicorn&domain2=Panda&submit=Go!
Panda wiiiiiiiiiiiins!
hmmmm
YES!
Hehehe. Hehehehe.
http://www.googlebattle.com/?domain=Christine&domain2=Mr+C&submit=Go!
Oh.
*facepalm*
Who is Mr C's equivalent of Franck?
Here's an interesting one. Rossi beats Schumacher - just.
http://www.googlebattle.com/?domain=Michael+Schumacher&domain2=Valentino+Rossi&submit=Go!
VBH?
by the way mr. journeyer, how comes you have the fourth most highly rated post on the whole of this site?
http://sidepodcast.com/archive/
http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/13/schumacher-the-comeback-the-sequel/
S'what I thought, just wanted to check
http://www.googlebattle.com/?domain=Vicki+Butler+Henderson&domain2=Franck+Montagny&submit=Go!
i must've moved on since then. who's cute?
I don't know, he forgets about her a lot.
Schumacher? :D
If only Mr C had a blog to keep track of these things!
#whenismrcgonnastartabloghuh?
i suck at writing. plus i blog here.
#ok
Reading the article again, I'm thinking of doing a sequel to it. Something along the lines of, "What on EARTH were you thinking?!" Thinking if I'll do it midseason or wait until season's/career's end (whichever comes first).
We had the MFC blog for about nine months, and I couldn't convince him to write anything.
That is a subject I'm sure he has a lot to say on.
It ain't gonna happen.
hehehehe! sounds like an excellent plan :)
i likes coding.
.wordpress.com?
you could do a post prematurely welcoming back Quick Nick...
hehe. i don't like talking about coding.
Well Christine beats Franck... (not if you use their full names but actually Christine still does very well)
i don't fancy franck!
:D If Michael leaves in midseason, maybe. If he leaves at the end of the season, I'm thinking Mercedes might go for someone else (Kubica? Sutil? alf Schumacher? Oh wait, NOT Ralf Schumacher.) :D
Kubica looking more like Renault, isn't he - thought that was in Autosport or something today?
ahem, Glock? I'm sure Merc can get him out of the contract... or is that just wishful thinking.
The idea... from how I understood Journeyers comment was to compare the people you each fancied... I think
Nick no?
oooooh. yes, i do fancy christine.
phew.
Here we go
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84889
Oooooh, yeah, forgot about Timo. I would say he's a distinct possibility as well. :)
good save ;)
Only if Michael leaves midseason, I think. Merc may decide they don't want to hire two race-rusty drivers in succession.
I am too confused to be offended anyway. :)
Nick isn't that race rusty I don't think... But I think this is unlikely.
Kubica is dragging Renault back to competitive vigour. :) And Renault has helped Kubica restore his reputation greatly after a patchy 09 with BMW. Combine that with Merc's patchy 2010 form and Ferrari deciding to renew Massa, it looks like Kubica's best option is to stay.
Plus, I think Kubica/Renault is a better fit - I honestly don't see how Mercedes will any different an experience to BMW
Gavin made a comment on the WC thread about Paraguay-Japan being this tourney's version of the Bahrain GP.
Looking back at how good most races have been (even Valencia was better than expected!), is it now fair to say that the new Bahrain layout is almost entirely to blame for the snoozefest? Or are there other things to blame?
what about renault's second seat then?
Petrov or Glock. As much as I like Timo, I think Petrov needs time and when he blossoms, he could be very good - not a champion, but a potential race winner at least
50% new layout, 50% teams taking it really easy until they knew what the new rules actually meant.
spain (spain, not spain valencia) was worse than bahrain, for me. the racing was also terrible at the weekend, but there were enough variables (safety car) to keep us entertained.
i'd go with that
petrov seems very sutil. on it, or miles off it.
Aww jeez, don't get me involved in this one ;)
i wouldn't say they were worse than bahrain, but it's is a common thread that the poorer races are all coming from the same circuits regardless of refuelling or not
at least i made it to the end of the bahrain gp. i lasted 10 laps in spain.
If Renault can find the money to replace Petrov's money (i.e. MasterCard), Petrov is a goner at the end of the year. He's nowhere near Kubica, and a competitive teammate (like, say, Heidfeld) may push Kubica to go even faster. Petrov won't leave F1, though, his money would be of great value to teams like Sauber or HRT. Or even whoever the 13th team will be.
I didnt even want to watch Valencia and I have been happy to not see many races live this year.
very good point, that.
i did. especially after hearing about the Kobayashi miracle.
i boycotted qually because of no 5live and didn't appear to miss very much.
watching races still isn't 'essential' for me this year, so something must still be wrong.
10 minutes of highlights did the job fine thanks...
really? you wouldn't have lasted all the way in bahrain had it not been round 1. :)
really? it always has been for me.
Man's gotta point...
There have been many seasons where it hasn't for me. Although part of that now is to do with a big change in my lifestyle...
actually, that's probably true.
because you always watch regardless, or because there are things keeping you interested?
and i was serious. :)
there are things that do keep me interested. it won't always be very compelling, yes, but there are almost always good battles at the front to keep an eye on, including this year.
that's very cool. i wish it were for me.
I say this with the greatest of respect, but after reading that statement I can't decide whether you are the world's most dedicated fan or a complete shill for the sport...
heh. no offense taken. :) but really, when i watch races now and compare them to classic races i watch online when i have the time, they're not that much different in terms of action and intensity. again, some races will be more exciting than others, but it's always been that way. certain problems have existed for a long time now (overtaking, of course), but F1 is still here, for better or worse.
Hmmm... I watch everything - to be honest, I love this season; it's been one of the best in years for racing (in my opinion)
that said, it's not always fun to see Schumi's rear being handed to him on a plate, if you know what i mean. but that's how the sport is.
then again, is that because the classic races have had all the boring bits cut out or because they are genuinely good?
i love to know what's providing that interest?
on track nothing is happening, and off it, there's webber/vet and alo/ham going at it, but it hardly stands up to previous classic seasons.
Well there have been good races, but then there have been some pretty bad ones too. I am certainly alright with doing something else on a sunday if offered these days...
But I think that's always been the case though
i've learnt not to accept the mediocre this year. i found the off button :)
not all classic races are stonkers. some (or many even) will have some lulls in the middle. the classic races on JTV are the complete races. even highlights packages from the Beeb are updated with the cut portions using footage from other broadcasters. so it's not... sanitised from its boredom.
anyhoo - i'm off home; should be back later
:)
Out of curiosity what was the last season you consider as a classic Mr C?
Yes it has. But why should I take the time to bother watching the bad ones? I enjoyed Turkey immensely even after knowing the result, so it's fine by me to ask here first if it was a good'un....
2008.
As an aside, my proper classic season is 1997
:D
#sameperson
The strange thing is... I could never understand why anyone was watching free practice... I mean can you seriously say free practice last year was more exciting than the races this year? What I think this means is that there is some other thing missing rather than on track action. The X factor (not the show but the real thing). The lack of politics has made things a bit more boring. The second year in a row where a single team is running away with the lead (if Red Bull don't keep tripping over themselves). It's a number of things... Maybe I miss Max? I never thought I'd say it... But maybe not having somebody to rail against and having the sport organized by committee and coffee morning is what I miss?
For me it has been 2005-2008, 2003, 1997 and 1993 of the ones I have seen the races as they happened...
that's a once-in-a-blue-moon classic season. :D i also liked 2000 a lot. :)
:)
ok, prior to that: 2007, 2006, 2005.
I never bother with Free Practice, It means nothing these days.
2003 is the best season of the time when Schumacher dominated, for me anyway.
A bit odd, then, that it's McLaren that seems to be running away with the lead. It does set things up for an RBR fightback in the second half, though.
Yeah because Schumi had a rival that he had to beat.
yeah. if we're talking practices in 2008, because they were part of a brilliant story. missing them was like skipping a page or two, everything built up to a crescendo on sunday.
last year i started loosing some interest. this year, none at all.
When you consider that at the end of 2008 there was Ferrari, McLaren, BMW and Renault all very close together, if the regs hadn't changed 2009 could have seen a 4 way team battle.
agree with 07 and 06. 05 had classic moments (san marino, japan), but it wasn't a classic season for me.
or rivalS, for that matter.
f1 needs a bad guy. you're right though, it's not just on track where there are problems.
i really dislike the luvely dovey fota stuff. i want teams going at it in court rooms, not backing down for the "good of the sport".
Sorta. The others got in the way of each other while Kimi got the scores he needed. Had the FIA not made that odd call about the Michelins it would have been a lot closer...
I missed free practice at Hungary last year and that race was probably one of the highlights of the season for me. I had no idea how anyone shaped up so come the race I didn't know what to expect.
true, but then we saw Brawn and RBR step up to the plate. that said, let's not forget that we still have a very close championship battle this year, similar to 2008.
F1 does have bad guys - Alonso and Hamilton and Red Bull spring to mind...
indeed, but as great as it is seeing Red Bull and Brawn last year. It just somehow doesn't feel the same.
It all feels a little artificial at the moment... Like people are saying, "we haven't got any bad guys so lets make something up"
Are they bad guys? Alonso just moans, Hamilton I'm not sure whats bad about him and Red Bull have been made to look bad after once incident.
i guess you're not so keen on the FOTA Forum on thursday, then?
not really though. only hamilton has come close to driving a rival off track and alonso's can bitch all he likes, it's not like he's suggested his teammate is a mentalist to worldwide tv.
in fact, vettel is probably the only "bad guy" in the making at the moment.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Schumi, but then I guess he's too far back to make much of a difference these days...
It's like what Alex said below - they're made up because we haven't got any proper ones...
i hope it spells the end of it yeah. i hope ferarri go into it mad as hell and throw the pram out of the toyshop.
he was out of order in canada, but it's hard for me to be shocked at his driving any more.
And I'm not even sure about that... I mean... They all want to win... But I get the feeling that the previous drivers would be doing a lot less asking what the teammate is going to do and a lot more telling what the teammate is going to do.
i don't think that will happen. if anything, it looks like FOTA wants to bond with the fans. it's a fans forum.
Nice Ferrari was fresh in 2008 and 2009 but now its getting a little boring.
Schumi is just a sad embarrassment to his own legacy. He's shown that unless he develops a car to it's limit pre-season and that the team serve him 100%, he can't win.
full of hot air. they don't really give a stuff.
ross brawn backing out a court challenge, what's all that about?
Not sure I agree with that (see 1996), but I think what he's shown is that he shouldn't have come back.
Still not sure why he always seems to be happy now, though.
then why do it? even if FOTA doesn't care about the fans, it shows they do intend to show they exist, which to me seems they fully intend to stay.
It is a different F1 world now though, 2010 is very different to what he left in 2006.
Less pressure on him to perform? Easier for him to enjoy it?
it's better than his wife nagging him?
I'm not sure how you can enjoy finishing 9th or 12th or whatever.
He lives in Switzerland - from what I hear that's enough to make anyone crazy!
:D
that said, i'm not sure his wife was keen on him coming back...
So does Roger, no? ;)
Fair enough.... but based on 2010, you can't dismiss it either and that's what bothers me...
After reading Andre Agassi's Autobiography, I have decided Tennis players are certifiable...
Johnny Herbert is probably comes across as the happiest driver in a very long time but he wasn't like that until after the F3000 accident that trashed his legs. Before that he was aggressive and bad tempered and he tells a story about how the caravan his family used at karting meetings got a hole in the wall. Johnny and his father had an argument about some race and Johnny picked up a screwdriver and threw it at his father's head. Fortunately he missed and it embedded its self in the wall of the caravan.
The happy persona was something to get him through his accident and because he knew he could never be as competitive as he had been before his accident.
Maybe Schumacher is in a similar situation. He knows he can't deliver so better to look like it isn't bothering him. The difference is I don't see him hanging around longer than absolutely necessary if he can't be competitive. If he does get back to being competitive his personality will change as quickly as Stefanano's did on Sunday
hard to judge based on 2010. i already thought he was past his sell-by date before this season even started.
Fair point. That's a big if, though.
But we should never had had to judge him again. You can't reheat a soufflé...
same happened at red bull. horner was the nicest chap in the world until very recently.
and Vettel
true, although we saw a lot of that last year. turkey and brazil spring to mind.

hey mate
I tell you what happens if there is a fallout then...
oh hi again by the way
go on
:)
am i the only sidepodcaster going then?
per the early conversation, i love the 1997 season, but also because CART was great that year - it was two top single-seater series in the world with great action really going at it in great championships
ahh, hold on i misunderstood the original comment. is that the thing with the fans?
i assumed fota were getting together to decide nothing, in a poncy hotel, as per usual. do let us know what chairman allen and his gang have to say.
yep
i was thinking of flying to paris and sneaking in, but rent is due tonight instead...
got ya. i thought you had a theory about what will happen to f1 if fota split up.
i can't imagine that - there's no real impetus or reason for them to split right now
i think ferrari's media day might give them some reason. we'll see.
i dunno - if it is, it's a weak try in my eyes
I want to check in nowwwwww :)
Sorry it's been a few days but late F1 ping: http://gridwalktalk.wordpress.com/2010/06/29/european-grand-prix-2010-a-dockland-surprise/
Good evening.
Evening everyone :)
Hiiiiii :)
Hello
I am going to try and spend some time this evening trying to get the actual Giggles Radio S show to fit... Currently the selection is 4 and a half hours of music (after taking 1 and half hours out for the early bird special)... This is going to be tough...
Don't take out the Backstreet Boys.
I'm supposed to be packing up my bag ready to take it with me to work at 6am tomorrow.... Oops.
Ummm... (whisper which song I'm supposed to have there [not that I do requests])
There are two, but they're a bit slow and/or depressing, so I'll let you off this time.
phew...
I hope Tears for Fears are in there. Shout is good, but Sowing the Seeds of Love is better. :)
I am actually listening to Shout right now... And was having exactly the same thought... Spooky...
I can't believe that Lou isn't going to be able to listen to this show... Grrr!!!!
We will ask Ant and Crofty to put it on the Goodwood giant telemathings if they are commentating
This is actually the worst bit... It feels like I'm disallowing my friends... For example... I love Signed, Sealed, Delivered... Disallowed...
I think Crofty said on twitter to someone he was commentating for Sky Sports.
We trust you. You'll make the right choices.
http://twitter.com/CroftyF1/status/17320856609
Stirling Moss' twiwiitter mentioned they would be commentating there so me and lou are determined to find them :D
Thank you :)
:D
Ooooh. Another good one! And there's Smooth by Santana...
they're usually hanging around the white media building near the f1 awnings.
yikes *twitter

take a bed sheet with ♥ ant + croftie scrawled on it, they'll bound to see it from the windows :)

*still not here*
i have to see you for at least 2 seconds...i have something to give you.

I wonder if Ferrari plan to follow suit
He did an 'Anthony Davidson' ;)

Evening awesome people, I am currently in 'writing to get to Silverstone' mode so if you see me around and I'm not writing then tell me to go away!
Anyway, just before I go, I've been busy interviewing possibly the happiest racing driver I've ever met (even though I haven't actually met him), check it out here >> http://www.feederseries.net/?p=905
Thank ye.
Back later after writing.

Lots of pings, all good.
Here's a Noble interview with the Pirelli man (sub req):
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2897
He says the big challenge isn't the tyre spec but the lack of time. It isn't the first race they have to be ready for or even the Jan/Feb tests, but the Abu Dhabi test in November. And they need to have made 20 sets of wind tunnel scale models by September - I had no idea they had to behave the way full-size tyres do, I thought they were just essentially blocks to show where the tyres are.
they used to be metal. but that was two years ago.
The wind tunnel tyres have to behave like proper tyres because the tyres are responsible for a lot of suspension travel so they have to have to use realistic tyres to get good data
I think they have had realistic wind tunnel tyres for a while.
you could be right.
i remember michelin teams having an advantage over bridgestone ones because they used rubber tyres and bridgestone didn't. i hasn't been more than five years though, surely? there are pics of modern cars with silver wheels around somewhere.
I thought I saw some silver ones over the winter just gone, can't think which team though.
Out of curiosity what was the last season you consider as a classic Mr C? {Comment #272}
I know this wasn't aimed at me, but my last classic season was, er... ...2009. Then, in reverse chronological order, 2008, 2003-2002*, 1996-2000 and 1994. Before that I cannot judge because I did not see most of 1993 or any of any season prior to that.
* - 2002 may surprise you but even curb-stomping exercises can be classics if looked at the right way, particularly if you follow the mid-grid narratives as well as the ones at the front.
I think they have had realistic wind tunnel tyres for a while. {Comment #394}
They did. But Bridgestone refused to do them any more when it became a sole supplier for cost reasons.

The story isn't important but how awesome is this;
"Additionally, the team was fined $15,000 payable to Camp Boggy Creek, a full-service camp for seriously ill children and the official charity of GRAND-AM."
I love that

Michelin brought them in not long after its return in 2001, Bridgestone followed with Ferrari in late 2003 and other teams about a year later. Rubber tyres for windtunnels haven't been used since 2007.

Me too :) It's nice to see a generous organiser in motorsport.
It's good to see a governing body/organisation not pocketing the cash :)
The strange thing is... I could never understand why anyone was watching free practice... I mean can you seriously say free practice last year was more exciting than the races this year? {Comment #277}
It's not. However it provides useful clues to how the weekend will pan out, which more and more people are realising is a good idea - plus some people do want to see the cars as much as possible :)
I watch free practice for the conversations better ant and crofty because its less intense, they just chat about stuff, and i like the car noises

Nice Ferrari was fresh in 2008 and 2009 but now its getting a little boring. {Comment #306}
They're not nice Ferrari any more. They've become moany Ferrari, which is getting a lot boring already (at least to me...)
ross brawn backing out a court challenge, what's all that about? {Comment #309}
That was about Ross reading the regulations and realising that a court challenge would be impossible. Remember Max Mosley isn't in power anymore and therefore won't bend over backwards to help his team...
Alonso apologise for his latest outburst about F1 being rigged {Comment #375}
How come the sky hasn't fallen down yet?!?
By the way, I'm currently preparing the blog entry with the details of next January's F1 Bloggers Karting :)
You and Amy should start the Sidepodplanningsociety, that is quite some planning!

Well, I need to have everything organised by the end of November and I figure by telling people now, people have time to decide to come - and also to pay ;)

NASA sometimes get things so right. The Voyager 2 spacecraft is now 12,000 days into its mission which is way beyond what it was scheduled to do. NASA being NASA of course launched Voyager 1 after Voyager 2 and it is still operational 2. It gives you some ideahow big space is that the nearest star is many lightyears from Earth and despite having been headingaway from here for 33 years Voyager is only half a light day away.

I was wondering the other day what happens to the old F1 cars from previous seasons, and now McLaren have a video (on the home page just under the main image) of Lewis and Jenson in the garage that houses all the old cars! They both sit in Senna's car from '88, its quite surreal.

I'm ready to accept entries in the 3rd F1 Bloggers and Friends Karting Competition! :D
It'll be a while before I'm able to say yes or no. :) The price increase makes it harder to be honest. Was great fun though.
Just a test message, because Firefox and IE aren't loading web pages but Spotify is still streaming and I'm confused
How peculiar

OK, that's understandable. Pat W. I'd hoped to be able to do it a bit cheaper, to be honest.
