It is July! The year seems like is just flying on by, it is day 182 of 2010 and with only 183 until the end of it is essentially the middle of the year. After the last couple of weeks of almost non-stop sport we have time for a breather with the World Cup taking a break and no Formula One this weekend, Wimbledon though carries on and as always there will be a post for that.

  • FOTA have got together and announced a carbon emissions programme essentially pushing for a 'greener' F1 future, this will be in addition to what the FIA is doing in trying to reduce the carbon footprint of the sport.
  • After Kamui Kobayashi's brilliant drive at Valencia at the weekend the Sauber team are working hard in order to prolong its form promising a series of updates to car over the next couple of races.
  • McLaren has just revealed a new video featuring Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button this time visiting a warehouse full of old McLaren F1 cars, this prompted a lot of talk in the comments of the sports past and a wonderful post on the video by Gavin.
  • There is a rumour doing the rounds that former World Champion and current World Rally Driver Kimi Raikkonen could be asked to test Pirelli tyres for next year's Formula 1 season. According to his manager it would come down to if Kimi was interested in the challenge and whether it will fit in with his schedule.
  • The Goodwood Festival of Speed starts tomorrow and Lukeh has been blogging about looking forward to the festival and name dropping just a few of the people that will be attending.

That is about it for this daily post, so I hope you all have a good day and I shall see you in the comments.

    ace daily, james.

    cheers, shorter than last weeks. :P

    The one thing about the Kimi rumour is it doesn't say what car he'd drive only that he'd test the tyres, must be pushing them around the track himself.

    Interesting post from Joe about the beginnings of the 2011 driver market: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/07/01/the-driver-market-in-f1/

    Already?

  • Christine01/07/2010 at 10:49

    Already?

    Well the drivers market never really stops.

  • RG01/07/2010 at 10:50

    I'm starting my Glock to Mercedes/Renault campaign here (assuming the option of another year at Virgin isn't taken up)

    Morning all

    I see Glock fitting in at Mercedes. Not sure about Renault.

    I was thinking about the drivers in the 'new' teams. What are their prospects for the next year?

  • Christine01/07/2010 at 10:53

    He wouldn't look so good in the yellow, I reckon.

    This FOTA fan forum fing - they are saying a lot of stuff, but how much do you reckon will ever happen?

    I suspect you already know the answer to that!

    I do - I mean, it all sounds lovely, but so far I have heard:

    - ticket prices will be reduced: No chance

    - be more open to the fans: Then Bernie tells them to stop

    - Develop F1 and keep costs down: Contradicts itself

    - Flappy rear wings: any more weekends like Valencia and there will be grounds to stop that

    - Tyres being further apart: again, no tyre company would bother making bad tyres.

    So what's the point of today? Bernie won't bother trying to stop FOTA because he knows they won't do anything...

  • Alianora La Canta01/07/2010 at 13:22

    So what's the point of today? {Comment #219}

    It tells us they're trying. We have someone to talk to. Bear in mind that the first two of those items are in FOM's domain, thus telling FOTA it needs to fight FOM even if that looks impossible at present (fighting the FIA looked impossible until last year...).

    The third one is backed up by what people wanted on the survey (and also in what F1 has been doing for the last several decades - expensive enough for the peak of development, cheap enough to enable sport) so F1 has to figure out of a way of resolving the contradiction.

    The fourth one doesn't seem like a good idea because it will reduce the possibility of overtaking (unless passing and being decisively re-passed next corner counts as overtaking).

    The "bad tyres" thing is inevitable because Pirelli won't know as much about F1 as Bridgestone did. It just means that it can be offered a nice cheap contract because it will be permitted not to develop the tyres ;) That item may actually happen.

    I've also heard the possibility of a couple more tests in the season, which will probably happen.

  • RubberGoat01/07/2010 at 13:22

Better overtaking, lower ticket prices, more access for fans, maybe even cake! We'll do all that for you and more... wait, what's that? Max is going? Ah. Never mind. We didn't say anything. Nothing to see here."

    By then BMW's withdrawal had compromised them a bit, plus they got quite a bit of what they wanted through the back door (apart from the Max removal, which obfuscated those changes). They've increased access (if mainly through Twitter accounts, some of which are even used properly). They've tried (and admittedly largely failed) to improve overtaking. They even managed to agree a voluntary resource restriction that is feasible instead of an unenforceable budget cap. The "lower ticket prices" are all Bernie though, so FOTA was a bit stuck with that one - but it needed a level of commitment the manufacturers ultimately couldn't offer.

    That's shocking. The event was seriously oversubscribed - if people haven't come, then they've denied someone who might have been able to attend from being able to do so.

    this reminds me, someone posted on the mclaren forum the other day that of the 6 people meant to be on his paddock tour in valencia, 3 cancelled and 2 no showed so he got to go on it by himself.

    I'd be spewing if I missed out for people who don't even bother turning up.

    Hence the 50p. It makes it clear that it's a token amount (you'd struggle to get a chocolate bar for that) but it establishes a form of commitment.

    It definitely shouldn't be an amount measured in pounds if they want it to be a free forum though.

    Alternatively, they could give a goody bag to attendees. That might help convince people to turn up for something they'd primised to attend.

    Strange. I thought it would be an easy win. "We are connecting, we are trying to listen and you lot get to see us in person for more than 5 seconds at a time..." sounds like exactly what fans need.

    That they still haven't won by the margin that was possible is puzzling.

    I sat through the whole: "Hey, we don't like these new rules, let's go make our own series. Come and watch. We know what you want. Better overtaking, lower ticket prices, more access for fans, maybe even cake! We'll do all that for you and more... wait, what's that? Max is going? Ah. Never mind. We didn't say anything. They sensibly realised a new series would be worthless without the prestige of the Formula 1 name, brand and history. So now they are trying to change F1 to their needs/wishes. Unfortunately all they are doing is proving the point many made back along, that a series run by a collective of teams will change policy and direction at a whim.

    Evening Lou. We've been out all evening because the weather is really hot. So I met my wife at an amusement park, mucked about a bit, went to dinner at Hard Rock Cafe and then walked to a part of town called Nyhavn, which is by the water.

    Then we went home and read outside drinking wine and watching the sun set...

    (lukeh) - I can't believe there is a greegs by our hotel {Comment #262}

    Earlier today Dad and I used a Greggs as a navigation aid - we were looking for a phone in a supermarket that's so big it thinks it's a shopping mall (but apparently not big enough to bother with niceties like maps, signs or intuitive layouts) and the Greggs happened to be nearest the exit. Lukeh will approve of the sausage rolls we bought to reward ourselves for not getting hopelessly lost in the labyrinth.

    Not sure why they need two in Spain now, last time I checked, some country has had the last two world champions and have both of them in the top 3 this year too....

    awesome point. although is silverstone sold out yet? {Comment #286}

    It's probably closer to it than either Barcelona or Valencia got, but if it's sold out I've not heard. Mind you, they don't seem to have sold out many areas at all (the exceptions seem to be Luffield B/C, Copse and the starting straight for all 3 days as well as Woodcote, Luffield A and Stowe A for race day).
