Okay, so where did the weekend go? It's Monday already and yet we're no further on down our to-do list.

It looks like the next twenty-something hours are going to be dominated by the very British subject of the weather. Already drop.io is filling up with images of snowy vistas and there's talk tomorrow of missed school and building snowmen. This clearly isn't going to be a normal Monday by any stretch.

Top subjects up for discussion today include:

  • It would appear that Bernie has finally come around to the idea that Europe may be in need of an additional race. According to Grandprix.com, with France almost out of the picture, Germany suffering financially and the British GP anything but secure, Portugal might be an attractive alternate. From what we've seen of testing, it looks like a world class venue, and thus far free from the hand of Tilke. What more could we ask?
  • On the subject of circuit design, R.G. has been busy drawing, designing and manipulating some very grand tracks using quikmaps.com. If you're feeling arty, why not jump in with some other European destinations for Ecclestone to consider?
  • The Sidepodmusicgroup now counts 32 members amongst its ranks and as a result, Muse pretty much own this weeks chart. If you're a music fan, and don't happen to listen to an excessive amount of Muse, please do join up and help redress the balance next Sunday.

It really is amazing how little F1 news there is at 2:30am on a Monday, however, there's no doubt things will liven up later in the day. Please let us know if you spot anything exciting, keep your snowy pictures coming, and yell especially loud if you're marooned for the day.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm in my mid 30's and have never seen snow. It just doesn't happen where I live and travelling to somewhere colder than here isn't very appealing.

The closest I have come was 'sleeting'. We'd just extinguished the fire in the rally car (minor accident knocked the fuel cap off, flames from exhaust ignited leaking race fuel) and stood around wondering if the day could be anymore miserable.

We had some awesome hail here 6 months ago so I will dropio some crappy photos.

that makes me feel better. we have no snow pics, cause we have no snow yet either :(

All we have had for months is rain, rain and more rain. I can't wait for global warming to arrive.

I meant to say I passed an interesting road sign on Saturday, Warning Otters. I am thinking of e-mailing the location to Christine so she can get herself a pet or two.

So there has been quite a bit more snow here in the nighttime!

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 06:24

As I live in (or near) Crystal Palace and it's been snowing I was thinking that I live in the Fortress of Solitude. Rather like Superman.

But I thought there won't be that much solitude here because I have all of you lot on Sidepodcast.

I don't know what Superman was complaining about!!! I mean sure he had all of those super powers but what he didn't have was a doohicky.

  • Flibster02/02/2009 at 07:44

Yay for snow. Yay for having to drive 12 miles to hospital with my next door neighbour bleeding in the passenger seat. Yay for ungritted roads and rear wheel drive.

    So much fun. :D

  • Journeyer02/02/2009 at 07:46

Flibster, nice bit of sarcasm there.

    How's everyone else? :)

  • Flibster02/02/2009 at 07:50

Actually, the yay for snow and the yay for rear wheel drive and ungritted road bit was true. Loving the sideways action. Kept me definatly awake at 5am.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/02/2009 at 07:50

Yay for ungritted roads and rear wheel drive.

There's so much salt on the roads over here that you can see all the gritty stones and stuff. Did you have to use a 'Dab of Oppo' perchance?

  • Stuart C02/02/2009 at 07:55

    Sounds ghastly.

We have two very discombobulated cats who have never seen anything but a light dusting of snow. They've been picking on one another since about 5am and one has done a wee up the side of the washing machine rather than in her tray, which is nice.

Hurray for self-employment and working from home!

  • lou02/02/2009 at 07:55

gah! have to go to school, even though there is LOADS of snow :s no doubt speak later ;)

Some links to go with the coffee and the Danish:

    Loeb wins Rally Ireland

Yay. WRC is so boring now with so few cars that this article got greenlit with the wrong picture in it.

    Testing ban may get reversed

Interesting. Turns out this was the team's idea and they have to all agree to repeal it. Should help out KERS and BrackleyF1, this.

British GP still awaiting green light

Oh great, I thought things were going well. Why are we wasting billions on the Olympics and not lending any money to F1? Disgraceful!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/02/2009 at 07:58

No grit at all here. Was using a lot more than a 'dab' - Not been happier in that car for a long time. No power steering and a quickened steering rack, no ABS or traction control or any other driver aids. Admittadly it took 40 minutes to do the 12 miles, but seriously fun.

I hope your neighbour is OK

He managed to stick a knife through his hand this morning while making his lunch. *confused* He should be fine though.

I need to write a chapter or two of the project codenamed "my booky wook" because a couple of other things that have been on the back burner might leap into life later in the week.

Hehehehe. Throw them outside and watch the fun.

Jasper did venture outside for a bit but they're now both in sulk/sleep mode (correction: I've just heard the catflap so he must have gone back out. Attaboy!). I did propose to fish the vacuum cleaner out – which usually prompts a rapid exodus – but Mrs C said I was a meanie.

Jasper? I would have thought your cats had Motorsports-themed names?

On another note, you know you're an F1 fan when your new phone has it's ringtone set to F1 cars - which includes waking up to the sound of them. Bliss :-)

    BBC F1 coverage news.

There will be both an Inside Sport and Question of Sport F1 specials. With the latter likely to include guests such as DC and Brundle (and maybe Hamilton). Both shows are to air a week before the Australian GP.

They also had a few rehearsal sessions recently were 'The Chain' was used. Apparently the footage from these tests is "fantastic"

Nice one! And The Chain! ^_^

Righto... time to listen to the Chain then.

By the way, saw an excellent documentary about the album this song is from - 'Rumours' by Fleetwood Mac. Apparently the whole group were very close to breaking up and were under great strain and emotional turmoil (as the two couples within the band were divorcing). It was the making of the album that kept the band together.

Apparently the Chain started out as just the bit we all know. The band wanted to turn it into a song but needed lyrics and a bit more music to make it long enough - so Stevie Nicks gave Mick Fleetwood one of her songs she had written. The band had no idea what the lyrics meant, but they loved it and it fit so well they used it... :-)

it was a stupid idea to try and cost costs this way, and renault last week proved just how utterly ridiculous it was, by carrying on straightline testing, with members of their test team.

so they can't fire them, unless the ban all testing ever. and that's never going to happen.

in fairness, the fans should have the option to see f1 cars in action without having to remortgage their houses in order to line bernie's pockets and some of these test tracks could do with income.

Something which keeps tabs on the results, calculates the points, produces a lovely chart etc or is that something I might have to muster up with my intermediate Excell madskillz?!

I thought cats were supposed to be low-maintenance pets

    Are you kidding?

No, sorry. I don't know about cats or dogs. I'm more of a panda person, myself.

  • Scott Woodwiss02/02/2009 at 13:17

There is footage of the accident on the interwebs, but I strongly suggest you do not see it

Yeah, it is quite a disturbing series of events. Most disturbing is when one of the poor marshalls gets hit by Pryce, and it was that marshall's fire extinguisher that hit his head and killed him instantly. I won't say what happened exactly to the marshall himself, but all I'll say is he certainly wasn't in one piece, no joke intended. RIP :(

  • Scott Woodwiss02/02/2009 at 13:18

On a lighter note, inspired by your recent trip to Silverstone and listening to the show last night, I have just bought "Inside the Mind of the Grand Prix Driver: The Psychology of the Fastest Men on Earth - Sex, Danger and Everything Else" on Amazon for £6.50 plus P+P.

In theory, cats are low maintenance. But they tend to hog your attention, run away a lot, and have very expensive medical bills. Plus Kitty litter and good cat food ain't cheap!

Here's a description of the book from Amazon:

"Reformatted in paperback with new interviews and information, this book gets behind the PR-speak to explore what Grand Prix drivers really think and feel. They talk with rare frankness on their hopes and fears, how they began racing and what forces them to continue, their crashes, emotions, survival techniques - and how racing compares with sex. In this book: Michael Schumacher outlines his philosophy and Eddie Irvine explores being alive; Kimi Raikkonen explains why he doesn't like being told what to do; Karl Wendlinger opens his heart over the 1994 Imola weekend; Johnny Herbert confesses to a fear of pushbikes; Mark Blundell talks about sensitivity; and Perry McCarthy explains why only other drivers can understand racing. It also contains insights about the drivers' mindset from motor racing coach John Stevens, sports psychologist Andrew Walton and the manager of Benetton's Human Performance Centre, Bernie Shrosbree."

I can import it into my gmail account with no problems, but from there I cannot export it for use with MS Office. I can only do that with my own calendar. Any ideas? Maybe I'm missing something?

Or perhaps you could export the ics file and post a link to that for me?

If you have it on iTunes, you can create ringtones from music in your library.

If you do a search on ehow.com you'll find step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

  • Scott in Italy (back in Italy)02/02/2009 at 13:41

Something which keeps tabs on the results, calculates the points, produces a lovely chart etc or is that something I might have to muster up with my intermediate Excell madskillz?!

I have code (Visual basic in MS Excel) that would get the results, and also the news articles and put them onto my ipod for reading later. The results were just the drivers championship and the constructors because I was sick of not knowing sometimes, so needed my handy reference device. Essentially it would just create a text file that gets stored on the ipod in the Notes folder.

  • lou02/02/2009 at 13:42

Wow - I thought your school would have been cancelled..?

no, sadly our school never closes cause it's a boarding school so there are always some teachers around. I've had 2 lessons today but the others were cancelled due to lack of teachers. We've been given work to do tho :(

I'm convinced that the kind of person who compiles snuff epics like that must be very maladjusted – you know, drawers full of female body parts and that kind of thing.

    very expensive medical bills.

The routine stuff tends to limbo under the excess threshold on your insurance, which is annoying, although 'tail-gate' set us back in the region of £500, most of which we were able to claim back.

Snowing whilst the sun shines is weird.

ahhhh. we're using a plugin thinks you're bad news f1 wolf. can you drop the ip address of your other machine into this site:

    http://www.spamhaus.org/sbl/index.lasso

"lookup ip address" near the bottom of the page. you may find you've blacklisted.

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 13:57

  • me02/02/2009 at 13:58

“lookup ip address” near the bottom of the page. you may find you’ve blacklisted.

we're trialling the plugin because it reduced spam from a a couple of hundred a day, down to about 30 or 40. much more manageable, but we don't want to cut anyone off either. hmm.

You can export as an ics file and that is fine for me. I just cannot create an ics file from somebody else's calendar. ics is probably better than csv because i would not have to map fields when bringing into Outlook

Yeah I know the advantages of using the synched version but I don't tend to use gmail all that often.

Ah, one of my favourite days of the year, up alongside my Birthday and Christmas, it is of course Transfer Deadline Day. A whole day of News Readers screaming breaking news and transfers you'd never see happen. But since this is a F1 place, I'll talk about the snow.

Walked out of my front door and my trousers were already drenched at the bottom. Then the traffic was so bad it made a 5 minute journey into a 30 minute one, meaning I was late for school. And the amount of times I got hit by a snowball, just grr.

On the subject of circuit design, R.G. has been busy drawing, designing and manipulating some very grand tracks using quikmaps.com.

I got mentioned in a daily post! My life is now complete.

“The on-season testing ban agreement is about to be cancelled, according to test team personnel that attended last week’s session in Algarve.”

    Yay!

no, sadly our school never closes cause it’s a boarding school so there are always some teachers around. I’ve had 2 lessons today but the others were cancelled due to lack of teachers. We’ve been given work to do tho

In the region, there was 80 odd schools closed, in the Newcastle area, about 5 were open, including mine. My Maths teacher, who lives in Blyth, takes a 20 minute journey usually, was 1 hour and 45 minutes today. My Science teacher who lives in Penrith is being forced to stay at a hotel in Newcastle.

  • Christine02/02/2009 at 16:42

We were given permission to leave early due to a flurry of snow activity.

I hot footed it out of work. Do you think I should feel guilty that it has calmed down somewhat now?

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 16:43

Not a chance, it's apparently going to be bad again later

  • Dom02/02/2009 at 16:51

could you not give us another one?

You only get the 1 for Honda.

Maybe try and cosy up to 'me' for another? Something about Claire Williams perhaps. ;)

  • Dom02/02/2009 at 16:52

could you not give us a better one?

    No chance! :)

but isen't Honda worth more to you than that :P

    ;)

  • Dom02/02/2009 at 16:58

I've never measured my support for Honda on a rating of how many clues I'd give about Ted Kravitz's real name. :P

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 17:11

Sent a link of the daily thread to a friend instead

It would appear that Bernie has finally come around to the idea that Europe may be in need of an additional race.

Have Middle East and Asian countries finally gotten tired of him to fleecing them? I get the feeling that Bernie's old shtick isn't working anymore. The China and Maylasia experiment have been tried and judging by the empty stands, has failed. With the way the economy is going, it wouldn't suprise me if the organizers of those races pull the plug on them; especially with Bernie's asking prices.

Now if we can just get Bahrain and Abu Dubai to share a round, get the European Grand Prix out of Valencia, and get Canada, US, and France (at somewhere else hopefully) back on the calander I will be happy.

If you’re feeling arty, why not jump in with some other European destinations for Ecclestone to consider?

Funny, I was in Seattle this weekend and was thinking about a race track I drew up on quickmaps. I wonder if I take enough video and photos, I can get going and make it on Rfactor?

    http://quikmaps.com/site/86098

The Sidepodmusicgroup now counts 32 members amongst its ranks and as a result, Muse pretty much own this weeks chart. If you’re a music fan, and don’t happen to listen to an excessive amount of Muse, please do join up and help redress the balance next Sunday.

This sounds like something I need to do...

    Mint, anyone http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/snow-mint-jpg

I have almost that exact same photo from December when my house got 15 inches of snow... mind you I live right at sealevel. I actually had to get my cross country skis to go to the grocery store.

I love driving in the stuff, makes me feel like a WRC driver in my Volvo.

  • lou02/02/2009 at 17:17

  • lou02/02/2009 at 17:22

Don’t we all know Ted’s real name?

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 17:22

I don't think people really want to know... Honestly!

  • lou02/02/2009 at 17:24

We did, but everyone except me and me seems to have forgotten.

i've only ever known his first name i think, looking back at the comments i didn't know back then and was only told his first name.

  • me02/02/2009 at 17:24

I don’t think people really want to know… Honestly!

i KEEP telling them that. 24hrs later, still they're badgering us.

    Tom Rubython

    Tom Rubython

    That's a really good one!

  • R.G (He lives in a house, a very big house, in the country)02/02/2009 at 17:30

Survived the dentist thankfully, least he is a nice one.

They won’t even listen to clues!

What, first name Theodore and surname has double meaning?

  • Dom02/02/2009 at 17:31

    That’s a really good one!

    Why thank you!

Maybe not as obscure as I'd planned...

  • lou02/02/2009 at 17:33

    That’s a really good one!

i'm sure it is, if you know the answer. ;)

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 17:34

They won’t even listen to clues!

    So we have:

First name Theodore and surname has double meaning?

And an obscure Tom Rubython reference

  • R.G (He lives in a house, a very big house, in the country)02/02/2009 at 17:35

    Sorry

  • lou02/02/2009 at 17:43

There will be both an Inside Sport and Question of Sport F1 specials. With the latter likely to include guests such as DC and Brundle (and maybe Hamilton). Both shows are to air a week before the Australian GP.

woo! that will be awesome. Can't wait. :D

“The on-season testing ban agreement is about to be cancelled, according to test team personnel that attended last week’s session in Algarve.”

I liked that album, but then I'm a sucker for low-fi indie so far up it's own ..... that it comes out the other side. Hmmm... Lets have some Steven Malkmus. I've already had Beck. ;)

  • me02/02/2009 at 18:16

so, theoretically, if you did want to google it, what way would you do it?

    with style and grace.

or at least, narrow down your options a little.

    On the case

    Drink first! I have standards

that might be the best comment of the year.

god knows, i hope i remember it in december :D

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 18:18

    On the case

Gosh I've just seen a name related oddity to do with you Mr Clapper!

  • Steven Roy02/02/2009 at 18:21

Nice one! And The Chain! ^_^

I just realised what was missing from our karting. Anywhere I have karted before they play the Chain before the final.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 18:25

Am using “In your neighbourhood” (whatever that is)

on Last.FM and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince just came on.

Ah ha, just found the ban this track button

  • Steven Roy02/02/2009 at 18:28

    woohooo!

A testing ban was a stupid idea in the first place. It sounds like some sort of last minute compromise position where no-one considered the implications. F1 needs to set up a group to take a long term view of rules and procedures and let it have two years eith much public discussio to put a sensible package of rule in place that may actually last unchallenged and unchanged for 3 months.

  • Steven Roy02/02/2009 at 18:29

Plus… we want to go to testing.

You will get ill if you fo outside again

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 18:29

    That sounds far too sensible

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 18:29

    That sounds far too sensible

The rules group, not going outside :D

  • Christine02/02/2009 at 18:30

You will get ill if you fo outside again

    That's true.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 18:31

You will get ill if you fo outside again

A fo outside is quite the hazard it seems :D

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 18:33

Okay Bassano. If you actually fancy it, really, no bother if you don't. How about Wednesday or Thursday after work at one or other of those places for a quick beer / beer related product?

And then I can be back home before Katherine even notices I've been out?

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 18:34

Okay Bassano. If you actually fancy it, really, no bother if you don’t. How about Wednesday or Thursday after work at one or other of those places for a quick beer / beer related product?

If it's still snowing like this then yep, definitely

Otherwise, am on late shift this week

Tom Pryce’s accident has to be one of the worst freak accidents I have ever seen.

There is footage of the accident on the interwebs, but I strongly suggest you do not see it

I saw it on youtube. I don't watch fatal accidents but this one was included unexpectedly in a vid. An F1 car makes a mess of a marshal at 150mph. Do yourselves a favour and don't watch it.

  • Steven Roy02/02/2009 at 18:42

ask her what she thinks about otters!

I am prepared to make the location of the warning otters sign I saw at the weekend availble to anyone who wants an otter as a pet.

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 18:42

  • Christine02/02/2009 at 19:12

Is this about Emmerdale or something?

    It's the Archers.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 19:14

    It’s the Archers.

    :D

    Ah, Radio 2 then?

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 19:16

    It’s the Archers.

Correct. I don't normally listen but am home now and so is Kat so it's on. You know how it is. And I new Christine is a fan so I thought I would live comment it :)

  • Alianora La Canta02/02/2009 at 19:16

    Testing ban may get reversed

    Interesting. Turns out this was the team’s idea and they have to all agree to repeal it. Should help out KERS and BrackleyF1, this. {Gavin Brown}

Is it me or is KERS more trouble than it's worth? Should help Force India though, so maybe I shouldn't complain about the possible lifting of the ban (though Max surely will).

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 19:22

    Live commenting cooking?

I am making sausage and mash.

  • Alianora La Canta02/02/2009 at 19:23

    Good luck with the project!

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 19:24

    Live commenting cooking?

    Better than the archers :D

    What kind of sausages?

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 19:24

First chop three leeks and peel some garlic.

Put leeks in pan with olive oil and smash the garlic, a bit of salt and pepper and some tarragon

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 19:24

    I need to write a chapter or two of the project codenamed “my booky wook” {Stuart C}

    Yes

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/02/2009 at 19:26

    LOL at ultimate pork

This time, the pork back and he's mad as hell :D

    Sainsb ultimate pork

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 19:27

All of that goes in one pan which you cover and heat on low. Stirring occasionally. Then when it's done put in a bowl and cover and put boiling water back in the same pan - saving on washing up.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 19:27

Yes it is. Is it any good?

Not read it, he used to go on about it on his podcast before I got bored and stopped listening

  • Alianora La Canta02/02/2009 at 19:28

F1 is now my official barometer of the world economic crisis - who needs the 6 o’clock news!

That's helpful - personally I find the 6 o'clock news miserable. If I want more information than Yahoo!'s news summary will give me (and it's not motorsports-related), I tune into the Today programme on Radio 4.

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 19:28

Since when have garlic and tarragon been ingredients in sausage and mash?

    Since now :)

It can't be 'Ultimate Pork' - it's not from Denmark!

Now here is a country that can make a sausage!

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 19:30

Now here is a country that can make a sausage!

Another quote for the end of year show :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/02/2009 at 19:31

    Sorry, couldn't help it

For all I know, Spurs could be top of the league these days

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 19:40

Use a fork to check your potaotes are done if they need a bit longer then you can turn off the griddle pan.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/02/2009 at 19:40

    I was thinking Frankie Howerd

Yesterday I was called old for posting a link to a song from the '90's and you talk about a comedian from the '60's and '70's? That'll be lost here!

    Don't worry, they're not ;-)

It'll be worth it if some discovers a bit of Frankie

  • Alex Andronov02/02/2009 at 19:41

Once pots are done drain, add

Milk, butter and leeky stuff and mash.

    Mash in bowl

Stick sausages in mash desperate dan style and serve. Ooops forgot gravy.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/02/2009 at 19:43

Agreed. Unlike Russell Brand, who just talks about his drug use, his love life or promotes himself. Then he switches to a 'Frank Spencer' voice (from Some Mothers Do 'Ave Em!)

    Aye, around £15 million

Still, it could be the start of something big

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/02/2009 at 19:47

Thought so... shocking treatment by Benitez :-(

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/02/2009 at 19:48

Technically yes, but if someone says something first, I’m hooked by that.

    huh?

  • Alianora La Canta02/02/2009 at 19:50

    On a lighter note, inspired by your recent trip to Silverstone and listening to the show last night, I have just bought “Inside the Mind of the Grand Prix Driver: The Psychology of the Fastest Men on Earth - Sex, Danger and Everything Else” on Amazon for £6.50 plus P+P. {Scott Woodwiss}

That's a good book, as long as you ignore the subtitle. If it had been subtitled "Conversations with the Fastest Men on Earth", that would have been more accurate. And there are a lot of good ones in there.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 19:50

could be a useful resource. especially to a man who can only make a single cupcake.

    Too true

  • Dan Brunell02/02/2009 at 19:51

Looks like we will have another year of Le Seb. Ask me, I don't know why they even bother testing Sato and the rest. Giving Bourdais another go made too much sense.

  • R.G (He lives in a house, a very big house, in the country)02/02/2009 at 20:02

    huh?

Basically a relative who supports Spurs got in before my parents did ;)

  • Alianora La Canta02/02/2009 at 20:11

    Just went up to the local library, got registered and took out Michael Schumacher - The Edge of Greatness by James Allen. Good read so far about Michael’s antics at Monaco 2006. {Scott Woodwiss}

I like to see people joining libraries, and glad you're enjoying the Michael Schumacher book :)

  • Steven Roy02/02/2009 at 20:20

    Warm up runs completed.

  • Alianora La Canta02/02/2009 at 20:21

    Am using “In your neighbourhood” (whatever that is) {Bassano Clapper}

That looks like an option to listen to what people geographically near you are listening to. Hence the very low musical taste compatibility - simply because you live near someone doesn't mean you like their music.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 20:22

Not geographically linked though, is it?

  • me02/02/2009 at 20:26

    Am using “In your neighbourhood” (whatever that is) {Bassano Clapper}

i think songs that your friends have played. faq states:

"Neighbourhood radio stations play music from your or other users' neighbours."

  • Lukeh02/02/2009 at 20:28

You guys and gals seen this 'Preview to 2009 Season' video?

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rg90lgvob40

No idea if it's been shown here before but I thought I'd share, it's really good. Mostly testing clips but really got me in the mood for the new season :P

  • me02/02/2009 at 20:29

Not geographically linked though, is it?

depends on service provider. if you have cable it might be, and the iphone can sometimes figure out where you are based on your wifi router's mac address (they have geo ip vans going around recording each unique address).

but last.fm isn't using any of that i don't think.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 20:29

i think songs that your friends have played. faq states:

Figured that, just couldn't be bothered to look it up

Who the hell has Will Smith or should I not ask?

just found luke in the mod queue, but that’s all.

Oh yeah, I wondered where that video went... i thought i was going mad.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 20:47

It appeared in lclt but not doohickey

It was a coded link type thing

  • Steven Roy02/02/2009 at 20:48

    Rather you than me Webber!

-130? How can anyone stand 3 minutes at that temperature without getting hypothermia? That can't be healthy.

Is Dank on standby for Webber's karting rehabilitation?

  • Alianora La Canta02/02/2009 at 20:48

    I just realised what was missing from our karting. Anywhere I have karted before they play the Chain before the final. {Steven Roy}

It must be because they are super fit - it does seem a little extreme...

  • me02/02/2009 at 20:49

    i saw it in doohickey?

  • lou02/02/2009 at 20:50

I would have thought being super fit and having a low %age fat would make it worse.

  • Alianora La Canta02/02/2009 at 20:51

    It’s the Archers.

    :D

    Ah, Radio 2 then? {Bassano Clapper}

    No, Radio 4. Close, though.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 20:52

    i saw it in doohickey?

Not for me, as I said earlier it's playing up for me

It showed in the Safari one but not FF3

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/02/2009 at 20:53

I would have thought being super fit and having a low %age fat would make it worse.

Yeah probably... I was thinking along the lines of anaerobic fitness or the super-fit hearts they have ... but I have no idea?

    Maybe it's just the Fosters?

  • me02/02/2009 at 20:54

Not for me, as I said earlier it’s playing up for me

we're about to upload some new doohickey code. if it's not broken now it will be in about 5 :)

    more soon.

According to Fast Lane Daily, Daimler recently had a vote to decide whether Mercedes continues in F1, and thankfully they’ve decided they will

That story has been around for a day or so. It was a very close vote but they have committed to staying in F1.

might as well say… “about time you stopped listening to radio 2, isn’t it?”

    Scott,

    BATRACER WARMUP

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/02/2009 at 20:57

That story has been around for a day or so. It was a very close vote but they have committed to staying in F1.

    Seriously???

  • lou02/02/2009 at 20:57

Okay, have finished editting and uploading some of the photos i took today in the snow. They are on my flickr if anyone wants to have a look.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 20:57

You might have told them during registration; then again you might not. In which case it may well be playing your friends’ neighbours’ music…

If any of my neighbours are playing David Lee Roth it's time to move :D

  • Scott Woodwiss02/02/2009 at 20:57

    Who has Will Smith or should I not ask? {Bassano Clapper - 20 comments ago}

I have two Will Smith tracks (the MIB theme and "Men In Black") but since I haven't scrobbled either yet, it must be someone else who put them into the system.

There are no DJ anythings on my computer.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 21:02

Not a very popular beer in NZ either…

Why is it that Guinness is so much better in NZ than Oz?

I think it's imported in both cases

  • Scott Woodwiss02/02/2009 at 21:03

Steven - warmup runs are done.

In fact it was worse than Will Smith, it was DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince..

... and not Summertime either, which would be excusable :D

  • me02/02/2009 at 21:09

    Doohickey? Yes

you may have to do a hard refresh (shift and f5), or clear you cache.

afterwards, try one of the fropio links.

Mr C have officially confirmed himself as a genius. Even if I haven't seen it yet.

  • Dom02/02/2009 at 21:21

This is the first time I've had contributors and topics at the bottom. Had been wondering where they were meant to be. :)

  • me02/02/2009 at 21:21

what you're looking at is stage 1 of dropio integration. next job it to allow people to upload to dropio, from doohickey comments.

if all goes well, this will then be backfed into lclt in time for the first race :)

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 21:21

    we have 6 or 7!

Wow, that must be 6 or 7 kajllion gigglybits

  • me02/02/2009 at 21:21

    oh yeah. them too :)

  • Lukeh02/02/2009 at 21:22

    oh yeah. them too

See, this kind of stuff is so cool when you're really easily impressed like myself

    *watches number go up*

Does the stats tally up based on since you've loaded up the doohickey or for the day (or whatever measurement) in total?

  • R.G (He lives in a house, a very big house, in the country)02/02/2009 at 21:23

if all goes well, this will then be backfed into lclt in time for the first race

  • me02/02/2009 at 21:24

since last browser refresh. press f5 by mistake and they all vanish.

I want it in lclt now, mainly because one cannot be bothered to change right now.

    am working on it, honest.

I've had a look through the Sidepodcast group and was surprised to discover that I'm not the only person with the musical tastes I have. Apparently, TheoneknownasRG and saltirelass have "Super" musical compatibility with me.

  • R.G (He lives in a house, a very big house, in the country)02/02/2009 at 21:25

Actually I can be bothered, Mr C is a bloomin genius, one hell of a genius. A genius, lets just say genius one more time to get the point across.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 21:25

since last browser refresh. press f5 by mistake and they all vanish.

One of the few things that bugged me when it used to freeze

  • me02/02/2009 at 21:25

The doohickey is the future my friend

during races the doohickey is too fat to fit on screen with all of bernies timing. once we get to melbourne, we'll likely all switch to lclt again.

  • Dom02/02/2009 at 21:25

The doohickey is the future my friend

Presumably we'll still be using it for the races & live shows?

  • lou02/02/2009 at 21:25

if all goes well, this will then be backfed into lclt in time for the first race

wow, sounds like a lot of work.

yeah, yeah, it's on the list :)

  • Dom02/02/2009 at 21:27

Sorry if this is a really annoying question, but what happened to the redesign?

  • me02/02/2009 at 21:27

wow, sounds like a lot of work.

fun though. new and interesting stuff.

it'll be great to instantly screen cap off of iplayer and upload from lclt and have everyone see that image with out leaving the browser window.

  • Dom02/02/2009 at 21:27

We just need the embedded video in doohickey and we’re laughing

honest. it doesn't fit. if you use doohickey on a iphone, there's literally nowhere else to put anything. hence why we have the two systems.

Nice, is it in a wonderful black and gold

black and white at the moment.

honest. it doesn’t fit. if you use doohickey on a iphone, there’s literally nowhere else to put anything. hence why we have the two systems.

I tend to use doohickey and a separate window for video, it would all be too small to watch free practice and comment on an iPhone!

during races the doohickey is too fat to fit on screen with all of bernies timing. once we get to melbourne, we’ll likely all switch to lclt again.

Question: what are doohickey and lclt?

Question: what are doohickey and lclt?

@me: I hope the doohickster and live commenting thing get some kind of integration in the new homepage - like links, or actual lclt comments (w/o comment box) or summink? (Yes, I know the triangles are there on relevant posts, but...)

  • Ollie02/02/2009 at 22:23

    what’s that in english?

:D People often ask what the doohickey and lclt things are. So, when you redesign (I presume you still are), maybe incorporate this element better so people are:

    a) not confused and

    b) can use them and/or see what they do straight away.

Maybe incorporate a narrow column of constantly updated comments in the homepage. ie. The doohickey, but on a smaller scale on the homepage. Just maybe without the actual comment box.

    Do you want a pretty Ollie-diagram? :)

In the racing league I offered spc to sponsor me. One of my drivers asked to leave after round 2, to go to a better team as a tester and get better performances, whilst I promote one of my testers to a race seat. The guy then comes back at the start of the new season/before end of season with better performance and skill, which improves the team, we are rubbish, therefore for season 3 we will bash everyone. Obviously then offering one of the test drivers to go to that better team to replace the guy who left me to go to them and left them to come back to me.

Just a flying visit to say that whatever happens I really don't think you can get rid of the live commenting live... thing. It is bound to be the defacto choice on race weekends. It's certainly still what I always switch to during the live shows.

The dohicky is great for the rest of the time though... Except... I would really like to be able to specify how many messages backwards I'd like to go (up to a limit of course). When I came back, like now, and I'd closed the window I had about 200 messages to read in a couple of threads. Hard to do when you load the doohicky and it only has the last 10 or whatever. Possible?

my dad has an orange email account. it's the most annoying thing ever. I probably think that cause dad doesn't really use computers neither does mum, so it's up to me to print all his emails everyday.

If one of the things you alt tab is the doohickey it tells you how many new messages there are on the list of items that pop up in the middle of the screen.

  • Andy Taylor02/02/2009 at 22:58

Not always, but then there's no Windows equivalent of archive and install which basically installs a new copy of OS X onto your machine while preserving all user information, network settings etc. It's a joy to use.

  • Ollie02/02/2009 at 22:58

    hmm, strangely familiar.

Don't know what you mean sir. *whistles nonchalantly*

my dad has an orange email account. it’s the most annoying thing ever. I probably think that cause dad doesn’t really use computers neither does mum, so it’s up to me to print all his emails everyday.

Normally it is OK but because the address is so long I am struggling to remember what goes in the various boxes in the setup. I have an old Virgin account and I had it up and running in seconds because all the info is common sense.

  • Andy Taylor02/02/2009 at 22:59

so it’s up to me to print all his emails everyday.

Printing email is another one of my pet hates. If you need a printed copy, then it has to be for a better reason than just reading the message.

Does he dictate his replies as well?

Printing email is another one of my pet hates. If you need a printed copy, then it has to be for a better reason than just reading the message.

i know, it annoys me sooo much. such a waste of paper. But he insists :s

Does he dictate his replies as well?

if they are long then yes :/ also annoying if i am working. worst thing is that he gets alerts to his phone when he gets a new email, meaning that he then comes and bugs me until i print it for him.

  • Andy Taylor02/02/2009 at 23:04

Alt is where CMD is now on the Mac and that’s the Apple version of Ctrl

CMD (or for slightly older macs, the Apple key) + Tab does the same thing as Alt + Tab on Windows, but you can also do other things - hold down the CMD key and then click with the mouse to select an application or press Q to quit the highlighted application, then press Q again to shut down the next and so on until you have no applications left to close.

On the new aluminium macbooks and macbook pros you can use 4 finger swiping to bring up the same view then click on the one you want. Exposé is good too :)

Oh and pressing Ctrl+Alt+CMD+Eject on a Mac will shut it down gracefully.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 23:05

Why did they change the Apple key to CMD?

  • lou02/02/2009 at 23:05

Why Microsoft and Adobe do a deal where all the Adobe stuff that you need is bundled with Windows. I NEED flash, shockwave, acrobat etc. It is not an option not to have it.

    Combined with Delete, it works wonders on Windows machines. (sorry) {Ollie - 23 comments ago}

Unless it's my Windows machine and it's in XP mode (as opposed to Windows 98 mode), in which case you get half a Task Manager with no tabs or buttons. Thankfully I'm reinstalling Windows soon because I'm getting a new hard drive (my backup hard drive failed - not surprising since it's been working since 2000). The new hard drive will become the new main drive because there's nothing for sale that's smaller than the drive I currently have (which is 80GB). My current functional drive will be downgraded to the backup one.

  • Bassano Clapper02/02/2009 at 23:07

I'll grass them up to the EU if they continue

A lot of people only use the mouse when absolutely necessary

Indeed. If I can keep both hands on the keyboard I can navigate much quicker. The mouse is great for things like image editing, not so great for navigation.

If Microsoft really wanted me to use Silverlight, they'd have persuaded ITV to keep the rights to F1 so that I'd actually have a use for the software (ITV Catchup runs on Silverlight, which was one of my pet hates because neither Firefox nor Opera could understand Silverlight, and the plug-in itself had a habit of freezing at strange moments even on other people's computers).

Yup, you heard right :( Granted, they're also fixing the pit lane and trying to get the initial complex to do the job it was supposed to do, but the bumpiness was part of the charm. Hopefully it'll be like Brazil was and the bumps will come back in different bits of the same track...

agreed, they're not sending out a professional message. but testing is good, it's important for f1. otherwise everyone's just playing a massively expensive version of grand turismo except for a couple of weekends a year.

I'm against it (the ban) just for the spectator. I'm going to a race this year, but there's no way I could afford to regularly. A testing day or two sounds like a pretty good alternative to me.
