With the possible return of in-season testing, and the news that Singapore will finally have a safe pit lane (boo about the bumps), yesterday was a good day in Formula 1. Let's hope today brings us more, but for now, here's what Sidepodcast stuff we're talking about:

  • The wiki now comes under Sidepodcast itself, with the new URL as: wiki.sidepodcast.com. With that in mind, it's also worth plugging the Quikmaps page, as there has been some great recent activity on there. Please, please have a go at making your own circuit, it's very easy and the results are brilliant.
  • With the additional functionality to the Doohickey that drop.io images can now be viewed without leaving the site, there's never been a better time to post some pictures and share them with the world!
  • Also, this seems to have brought the live commenting solutions to the fore. If you're not sure of the difference, there's information available here. Once you're comfortable with them, let us know what features you'd like to see. No promises of anything, but development is happening in the background slowly, and we love to take your ideas on board.
  • Oh, and don't forget to choose between Massa and Fisi in the Character Cup.

Phew, that's probably the most self-indulgant daily thread we've ever done. Let's get back to talking about F1 now... or maybe snow. I'll see you in the comments.

Snow update from London: It's stopped at the mo and the ground snow looks to be freezing very nicely, no work tomorrow then!

  • Alianora La Canta03/02/2009 at 00:10

Snow looking good in Derbyshire, though I don't think my dad will agree; he had to sweep all the snow off the paths and car park at work this morning and it looks like that will be his first job when he goes back in the morning as well. Oh, and he lives 1/4 of a mile too close to be exempted from work due to weather, which means he has to travel 4 3/4 miles to work in this stuff whether he likes it or not (or even whether it's possible or not).

Note that he was originally employed there to be a handyman...

yeah it's the same where i am, although the head master has left a rather lovely message on the school website. -

"All Sections of the School will be open today. Children should attend providing they can travel to/from school safely.

-The weather forecast is for sunny periods and rising temperatures after an early frost

Staff are asked to make their way to School as normal provided they can do so safely having taken into account their local conditions. "

Looks like i'll be going to school today/ tomorrow then :/ Gosh i hate our headmaster sometimes.

planned to fix it last week. it's still on the list.

quick question for anyone who's around. have added some shoutcuts to the navigation on the homepage. doohickey addicts can find that here:

    http://www.sidepodcast.com/

normally i'd ask christine, but she's asleep. are the links ok, and does anyone have a funky name for "shortcuts"?

it's all temporary anyway, but could do with some feedback.

The only real issue I have with the current site is navigation. Even I get lost sometimes, and know where I'm meant to be looking.

Not sure what you've got planned, but just having everything together in the same place and easily accessible would be great. Something obvious on the home page where new people can go and understand where everything is and why.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)03/02/2009 at 08:31

so, if sidepodcast breaks a semi-exclusive story, and no-one hears it. did it make a sound?

Well I posted a link yesterday morning which was seen and then forgotten about, so no, unfortunately it didn't.

Which when you consider how fragile the relationship between Renault and Alonso is, the fact that Renault were at Kemble with so many more trucks than just a test team was a big story!

  • me03/02/2009 at 08:33

Which when you consider how fragile the relationship between Renault and Alonso is, the fact that Renault were at Kemble with so many more trucks than just a test team was a big story!

they really didn't though. it was just one more truck than williams arrived with. and probably williams are the least well funded team in the paddock.

if renault turned up with less trucks than williams i'd be more concerned. wouldn't you?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)03/02/2009 at 08:34

Not sure if this is already posted somewhere but Rossi won’t be joining F1

Hmm I saw that. He made the right decision staying in MotoGP considering how he obliterated Stoner this year. I will sorely miss him when he leaves MotoGP :-(

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)03/02/2009 at 08:35

they really didn’t though. it was just one more truck than williams arrived with. and probably williams are the least well funded team in the paddock.

Really? How many trucks do you need to have one car drive up and down a runway?

if renault turned up with less trucks than williams i’d be more concerned. wouldn’t you?

Yeah I would. This begs the question: How many trucks does a team take to a GP?

  • me03/02/2009 at 08:37

Really? How many trucks do you need to have one car drive up and down a runway?

you should probably read this post from last week:

    :)

  • me03/02/2009 at 08:41

Yeah I would. This begs the question: How many trucks does a team take to a GP?

depends, have you seen the size of the red bull motorhome, the mcalren motorhome? what about all the support trucks that get hidden out of sight at silverstone:

    http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/06/24/first-pictures-from-silverstone/

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)03/02/2009 at 08:48

depends, have you seen the size of the red bull motorhome, the mcalren motorhome? what about all the support trucks that get hidden out of sight at silverstone:

Hmm... Interesting. I guess this is why they were looking to reduce testing times to cut costs.

I had no idea you needed so much stuff just to run a simple test :-(

  • me03/02/2009 at 08:51

I had no idea you needed so much stuff just to run a simple test

i'm not sure why having many trucks makes things that much more expensive though? the team already owns the transporters, it takes one person to drive one and it's not like they have to pay any additional parking fees.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)03/02/2009 at 08:53

i’m not sure why having may trucks makes things that much more expensive though? the team already owns the transporters, it takes one person to drive one and it’s not like they have to pay any additional parking fees.

I'm thinking about all the stuff that's in them and all the personnel that need to operate whatever they are using?

Aside from what you said in the post earlier, what were your impressions of the event?

  • me03/02/2009 at 08:59

Aside from what you said in the post earlier, what were your impressions of the event?

it was cold, windy and overcast in the morning. the damp track coupled with the short runs the team were doing meant they couldn't have generated a lot of tyre heat.

it was also incredibly boring. may have seen the car six times in five hours. silverstone testing is busier.

the important thing to me, was seeing a 2009 car, or any f1 car for that matter, doing something. fia cost cutting measures are taking taking the sport farther and farther away from fans and into top secret underground lairs.

five trucks are cheaper than a supercomputer and i for one say lets see more of it.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)03/02/2009 at 09:05

five trucks are cheaper than a supercomputer and i for one say lets see more of it.

The other thing worth noting about Supercomputers - the computer models are only as good as the assumptions made within them. If we stopped doing proper testing and replaced it with CFD we could see a lot of expensive mistakes because of bad assumptions. It's happened with wind tunnels before so it could very easily happen with CFD...

    'Merc narrowly survived F1 vote'

Honda's demise already raised some doubts about F1's other manufacturers with reports in German publication Focus claiming that the management board of Mercedes-Benz recently put their F1 participation up for a vote.

And the results are somewhat worrying with the continuation of their partnership with McLaren only surviving by three votes to two.

This backs up what Steven was saying yesterday. Bloody hell, after all the success with Mclaren you would have thought it would have been a sure thing. Three votes to two!

However, Mercedes-Benz isn't the only manufacturer whose F1 program is in doubt as the publication also reports that BMW are considering their involvement.

Focus reports that should BMW achieve their goal of winning the F1 World Champion the German outfit may opt out of F1 in the aftermath.

What??? Please tell me this isn't true either?

This is why I preferred F1 where the teams were independent and the manufacturers just supplied the engines - at least you knew the teams would only pull out if they couldn't race anymore. The car companies are under too much political pressure to stay in the sport and it's not good :-(

  • Stuart C03/02/2009 at 10:53

What are the chances of me driving the 20 miles to work this afternoon?

Most people don't seem to be bothering. I walked Mrs C to her office (10 mins walk) today because I had other missions to accomplish in town. The butcher said that by spending £14 I'd matched his takings from yesterday. I then went to the bank (for all sorts of tedious reasons relating to an urgent need to set up a business account) and found it closed, with an irate queue outside. It was still closed when I passed on my way back from the supermarket later.

  • Alex Andronov03/02/2009 at 10:54

    Perhaps you’re right?

    No you're not. It works.

Perhaps it's because of the multi-process nature of Chrome. Each tab is in a separate instance. Perhaps that fixes the problem?

I don't imagine any of the sites that take the GMM feed actually check the stories. They probably don't have the manpower to, or the inclination – they're only in the market for clicks. It doesn't matter whether the story is true or not if people keep coming back to the site for "news".

Woodward and Bernstein would not be amused…

They spent years on the Watergate story and for a lot of the time weren't producing much in the way of column inches to show for it. No modern newspaper would allow two staffers to spend that long writing not very much.

All Mr GMM does is sit at the end of a bunch of RSS feeds and paraphrase them into "news", beating quotes massively out of shape where necessary. Then he syndicates this "news" to mugs all over the internet. Fact-checking doesn't come into it. He's just supplying a demand for content, cheaply.

He's only recently started citing the sources of his quotes – and then only because he's been repeatedly threatened with legal action.

Bah what a silly morning. Went into uni for, found out my lecture starts at 9 now, lecture finished at 10:05, was about to leave, then a huge snowstorm stopped any buses from the uni back to the city centre so we were stranded for 2 hours! Ended up walking to the city centre when the snow calmed down a bit but the lecture is the annoying bit, noone was told and it ended up only being 5 minutes! Never mind, we just went to play on the wii in the common room...

Lovely snow though, we had all ours in south wales last night from 7pm onwards.

That’d be just mean Batten down the hatches, Mr C’s on Blue Screen alert

Much as I detest Vista I have never had the blue screen of death with it. I have had many many problems just not that one.

  • Steven Roy03/02/2009 at 13:04

comment alerts work as expected on both chrome and safari within vista. in fact, the only place they don’t work is on safari… on a mac

So Microsoft is better than Mac? :D

  • Steven Roy03/02/2009 at 13:12

Woodward and Bernstein would not be amused…

They spent years on the Watergate story and for a lot of the time weren’t producing much in the way of column inches to show for it. No modern newspaper would allow two staffers to spend that long writing not very much.

They also got a lot of grief for not naming their source.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)03/02/2009 at 13:14

They also got a lot of grief for not naming their source.

Yes they did. But at least they had one, which is where we get into trouble with GMM stories.

    Awesome!

Make sure the potatoes are cut up when you boil them... Perhaps I should add that? Otherwise you'd have a disaster.

    I think so.

I have no idea what you're talking about, but this is from the other Gorman's blog from yesterday: http://gormano.blogspot.com/2009/02/we-now-sell-gravy.html

  • Alex Andronov03/02/2009 at 14:44

wonderful. do i have to forget the gravy each and every time?

Yes that's part of the recipe now!

I actually cheated, but didn't have time to live comment the solution without getting killed.

Boil kettle. Put 1 bouillon chicken stock cube into 300 ml boiling water and a couple of teaspoons of bisto beef gravy granules and stir furiously. The combination makes it taste not like one brand and will tend to fool people into thinking it's freshly made!

  • Andy Taylor03/02/2009 at 14:45

Me neither. Changing the formatting won't hurt, I'm sure.

  • Alex Andronov03/02/2009 at 15:00

    It’s not my receipe though.

It's not really a recipe as much as a live comment of what I did last night when making dinner. I did not copy it from anywhere. I used the things that I had in the house and invented it. But I am sure it's not original.

For some reason whenever I try and do anything in wetpaint it seems to mess up the formatting so please go right ahead and change it to whatever you like.

I think the formatting thing might be Chrome.

  • Alex Andronov03/02/2009 at 15:01

I think the formatting thing might be Chrome.

Not that I've modified that comment. Christine did, wow am I making this more confusing than it should be ;)

  • Andy Taylor03/02/2009 at 15:05

Not that I’ve modified that comment. Christine did, wow am I making this more confusing than it should be

Probably. I went to edit it and found it already done. I have just realised that the receipe doesn't mention cooking the sausages, so that might need adding unless you like them raw.

  • Alex Andronov03/02/2009 at 15:07

You’re trying to poison us all, aren’t you?

Whoops! I clearly mentioned turning off the griddle pan, but not turning it on!

I didn't really expect anyone to collect my insane ramblings and turn them into a recipe on the other hand.

I'm nervous to add it as it might mess up the formatting.

You need to start heating the griddle pan and then when it's up to temperature put the sausages on for 15 minutes. It's this timer that when it gets to 12 minutes is the "when you have 12 minutes to go" refers to.

  • Alex Andronov03/02/2009 at 15:15

I've put up three pictures of the snow around where I live. The gritted road by my house has no snow on it, but the rest of the landscape has its fair share of snow on it. The field opposite my room is still smooth because the cows at the farm next door have been allowed to stay indoors where it's warm.

    I’m afraid that story is another product of Mr Maitland and his Adelaide-based cut-and-paste factory… {Stuart C}

Not that I'd have put much faith in the story even if it had been Planet-F1's own story. I go to them when I am in need of a laugh, as they manage to get so many things wrong and have such a sense of humour that going there never fails to cheer me up.

But as a source of serious news, it's a bit of a non-starter.

  • Alianora La Canta03/02/2009 at 15:51

    Most people don’t seem to be bothering [to drive to work]. {Stuart C}

My dad had to drive to work (walking 4 3/4 miles up and down unlit hills, starting before dawn is not a good idea, especially in snow) and was amazed at the number of people who gave up part-way through because they couldn't tackle one specific hill. What happened to trying an alternative route?

Yes, but if you wanted a day off, wouldn't it have made more sense to stay at home and phone in with a "Sorry, but there's a huge snowdrift outside my house/the car won't start/the central heating has broken down" rather than going halfway to work and then stopping? It would certainly be a warmer way of doing it...

  • Alianora La Canta03/02/2009 at 16:07

    Other than Autosport, who are the reputable F1 websites? {Gavin Brown}

For me, the short answer is never to completely trust any source of news, in any genre. Simply because a news source tries its best to remove error doesn't mean that no error can possibly be present in any of its articles.

However, with suitable precautions, I find a lot of websites have a decent selection of reliable news. But my main sources remain pitpass.com, grandprix.com and readers at several blogs and fora (other blog commenters/forumites at the ones I use are good at sorting the wheat from the chaff). Yahoo! is less reliable (apart from doing the same RSS feeds approach as GMM, some of its news items can be a week out of date by the time of publication), but still useful for telling me where there might be a story. At least they have always cited their sources in big letters in the top-right of each story...

  • Andy Taylor03/02/2009 at 16:09

i think it’s because you have a massive dock.

    Thanks :)

I can't seem to make the firefox window any bigger than it is, even hiding the dock. I'll move it to one side and see what happens

  • Alianora La Canta03/02/2009 at 16:10

    But - Planet-F1 has gone massively downhill since 2007 when they basically became ‘Planet-Hamilton’. {Gavin Brown}

Before that it was 'Planet-Villnueve', apart from one writer who appears to have thought (and still thinks) it should be 'Planet-Ferrari'. It happens that because Villnueve, for most of his career, was involved in a smaller proportion of stories than Hamilton and the bias was therefore less evident.

  • Alianora La Canta03/02/2009 at 16:11

    I thought checking facts and sources was basic journalism? {Gavin Brown}

It is. But then writing in language that reflects the nature of the story is also basic journalism and not every journalist (or junior/wannabe journalist) does so. Exhibit A: The Alonso "survives plane crash" story.

  • Andy Taylor03/02/2009 at 16:12

Oh my god at batracer! YAY!

    Oh guess who crashed

Looks like i’ll be going to school today/ tomorrow then :/ Gosh i hate our headmaster sometimes.

    You hate yours

  • Dank03/02/2009 at 18:20

BATracer annoys me on several levels. It doesn't follow any proper trends, except for the fact that I generally qualify quite well and then conk out in just about every single race.

And my team mate hasn't exactly been forthcoming about wanting to share his data after practice/warm-up leaving muggins here to it!

  • me03/02/2009 at 18:26

Not for Toyota I wouldn't think

  • Scott Woodwiss03/02/2009 at 20:53

    LOL

Speaking of Toyota, Pascal Vasselon thinks the other teams are missing out on joining his team out in Bahrain.

And my team mate hasn’t exactly been forthcoming about wanting to share his data after practice/warm-up leaving muggins here to it!

    Poor Dank :(

Yep, I've been very lucky with my team-mate and even though I was stupid last race and started quali on full wets in the dry (what a numpty!) Luke has been brill .. and, I'm actually starting to enjoy the game now.

Meh, laptop's not high spec enough, plus I've played GP3 lots before when I had it and I prefer it. Dunno why, but I've just never taken to GP4.

    One of my favourit

  • lou03/02/2009 at 21:37

i'm sad now :( i just checked autosport and there seems to be an article/ weekly grape vine that includes honda (from the pic) but i can't view it cause i don't have the subscription. Would anyone who has the subscription please tell me if there is anything worth nothing in it, even if it is just rumours.

  • Scott Woodwiss03/02/2009 at 21:40

One of my favourite things about GP3 was that before any session you had a small graph informing you of whether it was going to rain and at what percentage of the race distance it would do so. Plus you could print out the qualifying and race results and look at lots of telemetry.

I've also bought a new PC gamepad which has fans in it that blow cool air onto your hands which helps keep them dry and sweat free. Logitech too, and it's pretty much exactly the same as an XBOX 360 controller.

Maybe the FIA could copy this?

I have no idea what you’re talking about, but this is from the other Gorman’s blog from yesterday: http://gormano.blogspot.com/2009/02/we-now-sell-gravy.html

I love Dave Gorman's stuff, wish I'd seen this last week

"It was Burns Night last night, it's Australia Day today and the Chinese New Year starts today too.

To celebrate all three, why not find an Australian friend and give them a Chinese burn? "

  • Bassano Clapper04/02/2009 at 03:17

Incidently, my next door neighbour is called Dave Gorman

Changed it by deed poll because of the whole "Are You Dave Gorman?" show

  • Aitch04/02/2009 at 03:26

You doing all right there Aitch?

Doing fine, just a reference to Feb 3/1959 that's all.

  • Bassano Clapper04/02/2009 at 03:30

Doing fine, just a reference to Feb 3/1959 that’s all.

Well, that's a significant anniversary in my calendar too

I'll always remember that one if asked again

He works at the globe now and has auditioned for this season's Romeo & Juliet (He's very good and a bloody nice chap)

Has been in Casualty & that BBC docu-drama on the Dr David Kelly WMD scandal!

  • Bassano Clapper04/02/2009 at 03:51

I was listening to a radio program on Friday night and one of the guests R. Gary Patterson and he was saying that Buddy Holly could have been bigger than Elvis for the simple fack that BH wrote his own songs and EP didn't. Makes one wonder if that plane hadn't crashed how big could BH have gotten.
