It's been a very long time since I was left in charge of covering daily duties, I was beginning to worry Christine no longer had faith in me. I shall not let the good ship Daily Post down though, despite very little happening in the F1 world.

Before dishing up a couple of noteworthy links, I would like to plug some site updates that have been consuming vast amounts of time these past few weeks. Ever since we introduced our first on site opinion poll the damn things have been causing us grief. As a result we've rebuilt the polling system from the ground up, it still has issues but it's good enough to make its debut today. I've sneaked a little poll into the bottom of this post (a first for the daily?), by all means give it a try and yell if you spot anything amiss.

  • Felipe Massa made a triumphant return to competitive racing yesterday, finishing third in his own kart race, behind Michael Schumacher (bleugh) and the legend that is Liuzzi in second. A number of other F1 drivers took part in the event including Rubens Barrichello and those of an altogether lesser significance. After the event Massa was happy with his work "It was a great return to racing. I wish I could've won the race, but it was a victory to come from the back and finish where I finished. I felt 100 per cent and I'm ready for the next one." It looks like a fine day was had by all, and the action continues with a second race today.
  • Joe's super pleased about the return of Canada to the calendar and speculates that it can open the right doors to allow for the reappearance of a Grand Prix in the USA. Formula One fans stateside deserve no less, so let's hear it for the achievements of race organisers in Montreal, and keep our fingers crossed for even more good news in the future.
  • I struggled to find any notable news beyond the above and I'm still 18 links short of my daily quota. However, the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed the small "quote box" that appears further up the page. There's probably a fancy official name for it, but it beats me what that might be. We're playing around with the idea of highlighting small parts of an article, Christine is less sold on it than me, but do let us know if it works for you. What's the best way to give feedback you say? Why, a poll of course.

I believe that covers anything and everything that comes to mind. A certain lady seems to be on a mission to post more articles in a week than we normally do in a month, so keep an eye on the homepage for more updates throughout the day. As ever, let us know what you're up to, and don't forget to plug any blog posts you've published recently.

that Joel Coen guy, don't know why he made the list...

  • Sebastian (Birmingham, UK)29/11/2009 at 00:18

Would not the quote box work best on the left of the post so the post-text squared up to the right of it, instead of the ends of lines looking uneven/untidy to the left of the quote?

  • me29/11/2009 at 00:19

Would not the quote box work best on the left of the post so the post-text squared up to the right of it, instead of the ends of lines looking uneven/untidy to the left of the quote?

it's capable of doing both at the flick of a switch. should i try it?

  • me29/11/2009 at 00:19

    ooh. interesting idea though.

looks good. one little dot out of place doesn't matter too much

  • Sebastian (Birmingham, UK)29/11/2009 at 00:25

I think it does look tidier but the bulletpoint and text are a bit too much to the left.

  • Steven Roy29/11/2009 at 00:25

    CS Lewis?

    He invented CS gas

  • me29/11/2009 at 00:26

agreed. will move it back and fiddle some more.

am wondering if all the text should be justified in order to make it work on both sides?

  • Jeremy29/11/2009 at 00:27

    try it!!

hehe. that's sadly not a flick of a switch. it's fun to play around though.

Well first there was apparently vandalism on the track at Iver whereever the hell that is I'll go with Mr C's west london) and then there was 'serious signal failure' at Reading/Between reading and London and then there was fire beside the track before Newport station

Basically, it was just... ugh. I dunno. I'm just happy to not be on a train anymore. :(

  • Alison29/11/2009 at 00:40

i always have problems on saturdays and sundays. they suck.

They prioritise people most likely to be able to complain effectively ie. important angry weekday commuters.... All the engineering happens at the weekends. It's rrrrrrrubbish!

  • Jeremy29/11/2009 at 00:46

i've not been a frequent train user. I hated having to go by someone else's schedule, so I'd drive everywhere. Until I started working in the centre of Sydney, then it became impossible.

I really started to like the trains, until summer hit properly.

    people smell

I don't think any of you should be allowed to moan ever until you try to use trains slightly further north. The west coast line is criminal.

  • Steven Roy29/11/2009 at 01:03

    oh.. no good photos?

I don't think I took a single photo. I had spent 6 months in the Ukraine and their economy was so screwed up no-one would fly a plane into the country because there was no guarantee it would get refueled to get back out. So instead of a 2 hour flight to Moscow on a rickety old Aeroplop plane we had to take the train.

There really was nothing but pine trees next to the track as far as the eye could see for hour after hour after hour. The only gap in the trees for about 12 hours was a few hundred yards. There was a ramshackle house and an old woman with a basket of clothes wading through the snow to get down to the river to wash them.

  • lou29/11/2009 at 01:04

    oh.. no good photos?

I don't think I took a single photo. I had spent 6 months in the Ukraine and their economy was so screwed up no-one would fly a plane into the country because there was no guarantee it would get refueled to get back out. So instead of a 2 hour flight to Moscow on a rickety old Aeroplop plane we had to take the train.

There really was nothing but pine trees next to the track as far as the eye could see for hour after hour after hour. The only gap in the trees for about 12 hours was a few hundred yards. There was a ramshackle house and an old woman with a basket of clothes wading through the snow to get down to the river to wash them.

    oh...

  • Jon Waldock29/11/2009 at 01:05

Theyve always done that at our local leisure centre :(

its quite obserd, at ours here anyone can watch as it's olympic size, so has one of those big balconys, but then it does cost me £5 to have cramp, so it's not all rosey

  • Alison29/11/2009 at 01:05

P.S, i've just discovered that my home swimming pool is now charging people to watch people swim (i.e parents)

    Most pools do this.

  • Jon Waldock29/11/2009 at 01:06

really? they never did when we were kids. pah

    exactly!

it goes down to 3.50 at "Standard Discount" and 2.00 for "Higher Discount"

may phone tomorrow to see if they do student discount.

the leisure centre future away is 4.60/3.25/1.85, but its 6 miles away, and that would mean Bike/Swim/Bike, which would be slightly sucidal atm

  • Steven Roy29/11/2009 at 01:11

    oh...

Flying in there in the first place was a bit eventful. The plane was a bit second hand in the Soviet style. We flew over the airport and there were rows and rows of planes like you see in some of those American desert plane scrap yards. Hundreds pf planes. Everything from old single-seater bi-planes to moders airliners. Turns out that every time a plane needed a spare part they just parked it due to the Soviet economic planning madness.

The announcements on the plane were in two languages - Russian and Ukrainian and neither my mate or I had the slightest clue about either. We came into land and I was convinced we were missing the runway. The lower we got the more convinced I got. In the end we landed on the grass parallel to the runway.

We later found out that they didn't use the runway in the summer to save wear and tear. Of course they announced it to the passengers but we understood nothing.

  • Alison29/11/2009 at 01:11

really? i didn't think my local pool did it when i used to go there.

Most people don't really think about it/notice though.... Also if it's just going to be 5 minutes or whatever, there's an element of discretion.

i will eventually, because that makes good tri practice, but i could pull off a 6 mile ride easy at the moment, bike is my strongest bit easily, so i need to be doing atleast 30-40 minutes in the pool, which if i cycled there i wouldnt do

so do i, cycling is uber easy, but when im setting a base time to get to the pool, then trying to set a distance at the pool, and then set a time back, im going to collapse in a pile of mush

s'not how i work, i have to focus on building each sport up one day at a time.

in the future ill mix and match, but only when each sport is up to a good level

  • Steven Roy29/11/2009 at 01:20

yeah i bet.. i would be horrified if that were me.

I like a bumpy flight. I feel like I am getting my money's worth. I am not so keen on bumpy landings especially when I don't expect grass.

Okay I don't know. I like to cycle so I'd probably go for that.... I did spend my summer cycling 60 miles a day with camping equipment though so maybe I'm not that sane.

i've not been a frequent train user. I hated having to go by someone else's schedule, so I'd drive everywhere. Until I started working in the centre of Sydney, then it became impossible.

no one told me that the trains in Sydney are double-decker so when I first arrived and got on a train my mind was blown. Upstairs! Downstairs! On a train!

  • Nick in Dubai29/11/2009 at 04:34

does London have any? I feel like I need to be pre-warned before I arrive in cities because they excite me so much.

Today I have learned that even though they drive on the right, in some parts of Europe they still have trains that run on the left. Odds on me using the wrong platform at some stage and going in the wrong direction: 100%

  • Alex Andronov29/11/2009 at 07:18

There are a lot on the continent: Italy, Holland and Belgium have them.

  • Alex Andronov29/11/2009 at 07:19

Trains that run on the left? What?

  • Amy29/11/2009 at 07:20

Trains that run on the left? What?

for example, the Madrid Metro. Wiki page says "Unlike normal Spanish road and rail traffic, Madrid Metro trains use left-hand running on all lines due to historical reasons" and apparently lots of Italy does too.

  • Alex Andronov29/11/2009 at 07:25

for example, the Madrid Metro. Wiki page says "Unlike normal Spanish road and rail traffic, Madrid Metro trains use left-hand running on all lines due to historical reasons" and apparently lots of Italy does too.

In England you can't predict anything by platform. At my local station (which I use every week day) trains from there terminate in 4 places London Bridge, London Victoria, East Croydon and Beckenham Junction.

There are only two platforms. London Bridge is North East of here, London Victoria is North West. East Croydon is South West, Beckenham Junction South East.

Platform 2 has trains to London Bridge and Beckenham Junction (so only East, but North and South). Platform 1 has trains to London Victoria, East Croydon and hold on.... London Bridge as well. So trains from Platform 1 go North, South, East and West.

  • Alex Andronov29/11/2009 at 07:26

Or do they mean which side you get on? That varies from station to station here. If you are on the Northern Line (Bank Branch) you get off the train on the left at Bank and on the right at Mooregate. It's to ease congestion apparently.

  • Amy29/11/2009 at 07:27

They mean when you have two tracks like || || one city bound, one the opposite direction. I'd expect the trains to run on the righthand track because their traffic does, because here the trains run on the left hand track. But noooo. Silly Europe.

I take comfort in the fact that at least I will speak the same language as you London folk.

  • Alex Andronov29/11/2009 at 07:36

Of course you can go North forever on the underground as well

    http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/standard-tube-map.gif

To go from Kings Cross to Euston on the Northern Line you go North

To go from Euston to Kings Cross on the Victoria Line you also go North.

So you can, by swapping trains go North forever and ever.

(these stations are in the Top Middle of Zone 1)

  • Amy29/11/2009 at 07:40

(these stations are in the Top Middle of Zone 1)

this diagram scares and confuses me :D

This is what is familiar and comfy and easy to understand for me. I like that regardless of where I may be, every single route comes into the city loop. I'll ignore the fact that our network cannot grow as the loop cannot support anymore trains.

Because I don't actually get trains anyway, I don't live near a station. I get trams. Their routes are easy too.

  • Alex Andronov29/11/2009 at 07:44

this diagram scares and confuses me :D

It's far clearer than most other maps in the world (nobody else has nearly that many stations to deal with - and of course that doesn't even include the overground).

Ours is now familiar and comforting to me.

  • Alex Andronov29/11/2009 at 07:45

true, all my friends who live in London love their public transport system, apart from the odd experience like Lukeh's last night. The Melbourne train system has just been given a rating of 5.7/10 by the public which is the worst it's ever been since records began. I am so so so glad I don't commute by train.

To be fair based on reading back it sounds like it wasn't London's public transport system that let him down. No idea why I'm defending London's public transport system I had delays 3 days this week... And I only went to work 3 days this week (working from home on the rest of the week)

Out of interest how many bits of audio make up a typical between sweeper segment? I mean how many times do you have to cut and splice? Mine is slightly different because there is no script or organization to it... But in one 2 minute section I ended up with 20 cuts!

    It really, really depends.

  • Alex Andronov29/11/2009 at 10:58

Also there is one bit where the first half of sentence from Fourstar comes some 25 minutes in the recording before he managed to get back to the point and finish the sentence! Also two sections from in between those sections became sections too... Quite crazy.

  • Amy29/11/2009 at 11:19

  • Alex Andronov29/11/2009 at 11:19

i wondered how long it would take... i'd have told you sooner.. but no one actually asked.. :P

One never knows if it's suitable to ask. I kinda just assumed you'd mention it when you were ready :)

  • Scott Woodwiss29/11/2009 at 11:19

i wondered how long it would take... i'd have told you sooner.. but no one actually asked.. :P

Who cares? :D Fantastic, congrats guys. Made me put a smile on my face which takes a lot of effort to do. :)

  • Christine29/11/2009 at 11:20

Urm, maybe we should explain ourselves. We kinda have been together since April...

You don't have to explain yourselves to anyone!

    Congrats though :)

  • James29/11/2009 at 11:20

Urm, maybe we should explain ourselves. We kinda have been together since April...

I'm really missing out by not being on FB!

I think we are missing out on a lot more. We should move closer to the spc males.

  • Alex Andronov29/11/2009 at 11:22

  • Christine29/11/2009 at 11:23

    Interview with Mr Whitmarsh:

"It's a proposition that some teams might find troubling, but which we are absolutely relishing – it's a very nice problem to have! We have two fiercely competitive individuals who both fully understand the benefit of teamwork. They are phenomenal team players. My job is to manage that racer's instinct: they are there to race each other - and the only instruction they'll receive from me is to respect each other on the track. But that's it - other than that, they're free to race."

    Mmmmmmhmm.

  • Nick in Dubai29/11/2009 at 11:23

We are an endangered species... Kinda like Pandas...

    Thats what i was thinking!

I want to be a person not an spc male!

I like this idea. If we get desperate we could use wave to discuss things like our luxurious mobile home. Although I'd probably still use twitter or LJ for that. I am not very MFC.

Wave as it is at the moment isn't very MFC. It's the underlying potential that is good.

Well he can beat him in a race AND overtake him around the outside, so yes. Personally. I think after that race on Jonathon Ross Mr Bellamy should get a drive at Mercedes.

The radio messeges would sound immense :) I want to be his race engineer!

    hahaha goood choice ;)

  • Pat W29/11/2009 at 12:38

One never knows if it's suitable to ask. I kinda just assumed you'd mention it when you were ready :)

Seems to work the same as F1 news.

    Rumour - Denial - Confirmation

Also, that's all you said last time. And that is OK.

  • Pat W29/11/2009 at 12:41

I was in the paddock at Knockhill for a BTCC round. I was wandering around in heavy wind and rain, stood a the podium, turned around and a camera was in my face pointing at me because I'd stood in the way of a driver. He immediately moved and I have no idea if I was on telly. I really hope not.

  • Christine29/11/2009 at 12:42

    Interview with Mr Whitmarsh:

"It's a proposition that some teams might find troubling, but which we are absolutely relishing - it's a very nice problem to have! We have two fiercely competitive individuals who both fully understand the benefit of teamwork. They are phenomenal team players. My job is to manage that racer's instinct: they are there to race each other - and the only instruction they'll receive from me is to respect each other on the track. But that's it - other than that, they're free to race."

    Mmmmmmhmm.

How long do we give it? I say Monaco.

I disagree with Lewis walking all over Jenson despite being a massive Lewis fan. I say this simply because Jenson is a good driver, and everyone is betting against him.

Lewis will end up on top, but it wont be a walk in the park.

for everything else i use it, but metric means being accurate, i mean, no-one really knows how long a mile is! ;)

i dont mind it really, it just takes a bit of getting your head round for distances above km.

Ho-ping Tung is the name. I'll be cheering fr Baguette though because it gives more headline potentials. Especially if something happens at France for the guy.

Love the banter between drivers sub-F1..

    JR Hildebrand:

"Getting ready for a workout then going to start packing for Jerez. Can't wait to get there and get going!"

    James Hinchcliffe:

"@JRHildebrand just make sure you pronounce it Hareth. Pronouncing it Jerez will make them think you're soooooo american."

    JR Hildebrand:

"@Hinchtown ha! dude my helmet is black w flames & a candy paint american flag & my feet dont fit in the car. Ive lost that battle already."

i haven't spent a lot of time looking. not yet :) but so far so good. some of them give away older series for free, and link to the itunes store for 1 or 2 dollars for the new stuff. others make the most recent episode available for free - kind of like the iplayer but others won't make the episode available for 8 days (eg network that shows House). I'll be making a list and bookmarking it twice :)

  • Nick in Dubai29/11/2009 at 16:49

Predictive text on the iPod Touch confuses me, or maybe I haven't got it working properly... telling me what the word is gonna be when I've finished inputting it is NOT predictive!

I love the iPod keyboard - I find it very easy to type on and I am all thumbs normally!

    Stalling on the grid,

    Rubens really needs to move

    His car kicks into gear

Well that launch wasn’t so smooth!

He had his ups and downs,

But in 09 Rubens got far,

Wins and podiums to laugh about

Blah blah blah blah blah blah

    Oh Rubens Bells, Rubens Bells

He and Jenson were the ultimate team

I hope they have a good Christmas

    Reminiscing on Earth Dream

    Oh Rubens Bells, Rubens Bells,

All the physicists are playing hide and seek. Einstein is the ‘den’ and stands against the wall with his eyes closed and counts till 100 to enable all the physicists to run and hide. At the count of 100 Einstein turns around and finds Newton standing there. He screams, “Newton, you are out!” Newton says, “No, I ‘m not!” Einstein says, “Yes, you are. I can see you here in front of me”. Newton says, “I’m not out. Pascal is.” Einstein is a bit confused and starts to scratch his head and beard. Newton says “Here, Let me explain”

He draws a square one meter by one meter on the floor and stands in the middle of it and says, “Newton per meter square is a Pascal, so it’s Pascal who’s out not me”

    Lou:

Read a short story called "Danger!" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Then look at its publication date. Reflect that the German Naval Officer in command of the pre-war Submarine Fleet also read this story. Then suppose his superiors where just as enlightened....

  • RG29/11/2009 at 20:38

    or is that just me?

We should try and pass it off as a big audio cd, featuring the likes of Michael McIntyre and Victoria Wood etc. It might work, though 2 might not be enough?

great interview with cossies mark gallagher on manipe:

"Our fuel consumption has improved dramatically. Williams came, they saw, they asked the question: 'How big has the fuel tank got to be? This is where we'd like you to be at.' They know where we're at and have determined that that's competitive."

    Is Blick a good source?

  • Jon Waldock29/11/2009 at 23:46

or "drivers who are never going to get a real F1 drive"

    ooh this game is fun;

"young, old, and medium aged drivers who either have some hope of getting into f1, no hope, or are well past it and a team have had to put them in jsut because no-one else will do it" test

  • paul29/11/2009 at 23:47

    ooh this game is fun;

That's what made Toro Rosso's achivements all the more special. They won disprite the fact that that it had MInardi DNA. If that car had the DNA of something decent, .it would have been lapping the field, British drivers twice, and winning races and championships in teh most boring fashion possbile, almost like a McLaren.
