It is Monday once again and to steal the title from the song by The Boomtown Rats; I don't like Mondays, the weekend is over and I'm having to get on with some work. This is the third daily post as part of the takeover, who knows maybe we should takeover more often? The aim for this daily thread is to be free of anything Formula One related. I hope the teams don't decide today is the day to reveal anything but by saying that I have probably tempted fate so if something does happen I'm sure breakout posts will appear as soon as humanly possible.

  • Today is Must Comment Monday, so feel free to plug your latest blog posts or your blog in general. If you don't have a blog then now is the perfect time to start one. It is a lot of fun and there really no excuses not to have one.
  • On an MFC note, some figures for BBC iPlayer have revealed that in October alone there were 70 million requests for programs. iPlayer is now available on 15 platforms (but not the Xbox) and it is reported to be transferring 12.5gb worth of data per second.
  • Its the last day of November and Christmas is only 25 days away. Which means the Christmas special of Doctor Who is fast approaching, BlogtorWho have images of the Christmas Radio times cover & feature on "The End of Time". I, for one, can't wait for the Christmas special.

Finally I know I already mentioned it, but please remember is it Must Comment Monday all bloggers really appreciate comments, a list of blogs can be found over on the wiki.

Hope you all have a good day, and I shall see you in the comments at some point!

Although there was an article today saying that the iPlayer isn't coming to the Xbox 360 because Microsoft want to charge people to use it

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/microsoft/6671901/Xbox-360-iPlayer-launch-delayed-indefinitely.html

    Okay maybe monday is bad.

see... i have to do an assembly in front of school tomorrow, where as this time last year i would be a nervous wreck, compared to speaking to Jenson it's a walk in the park ;) stressful to organise the 15 people involved though :s

I can't see him being that selfless tbh....

you clearly hold him in high regard ;) im not sure it has anything to do with that, but more to do with you pushing him off it

  • Jordan F130/11/2009 at 00:42

I think Alison should hurry up and push Micxk off the said balcony as Jon it seems wants to join Nick at the bottom.... :P

God, you two snobs, join the rest of creation and take the elevators down! It is hard work for Alison to push you two off the balcony.

    Retail is risky business!! Allegedly.

I get somewhat famous people in my store all the time (centre of Sydney), but no Tom Cruise (from the movie Risky Business - geddit?) yet).

I had a quick word with Steve Bisley (goose from the original Mad Max movie) the other day.

    #namedropper

  • Jordan F130/11/2009 at 00:47

The traction between the fireman's pole and the person going down it might be too slow compared to Nick and Jon's idea of being thrown off a balcony.... Something about a freefall being the quickest way down.

  • Jon Waldock30/11/2009 at 00:47

So you need a fireman's pole attached to the roof that doesn't quite go as far down as the floor

  • Jon Waldock30/11/2009 at 00:49

    The concept is funny though

I have never had a wisdom tooth out but I had one next to the one next to a wisdom tooth taking out because the dentist said my mouth wasn't big enough. No-one ever said that before. That was painful but a wisdom tooth will be worse

  • Jeremy30/11/2009 at 01:02

Well, I'm gonna be conscious but only just

At 18, I had all four out under general anaesthetic with a small amount of swelling for a day or two afterwards. Apparently thats quite unusual.

The poor 14 year old in the hospital bed next to me had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic and was there for days afterwards. Everyone else I knew who had even one out, swelled up like a ballon for a week.

    #sorrybass

  • Bassano Clapper30/11/2009 at 01:03

That was painful but a wisdom tooth will be worse

I had the top & bottom on the other side out a few years back. Extremely uncomfortable is more appropriate. But then I was fully conscious with only a local anaesthetic

    Definitely.

Actually there's a question... Will I be able to borrow books from the library on my Kindle in the future?

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:25

Perhaps they are worried people will forget what books are when everyone has Kindles.

Guy in my office has one, thinks its rrrrrrubish.

ill see if i can pursude him to bring it in so i can have a play ;)

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 09:26

Is it the Nook that lets you share books with a friend? If you lend a book to a friend, you can't read it while they have it.

They are starting to think about lending, at least.

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:28

Guy in my office has one, thinks its rrrrrrubish.

he is like me with digital music... if it doesnt come in physical form you shouldnt have to pay for it.

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 09:29

he is like me with digital music... if it doesnt come in physical form you shouldnt have to pay for it.

    Bless you both.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 09:29

They are starting to think about lending, at least.

I was just thinking because on iTunes I am tending to rent if it's possible. And I think I would, on a Kindle happily rent my book.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 09:30

he is like me with digital music... if it doesnt come in physical form you shouldnt have to pay for it.

Do you think people who make the content should get paid to do it or not really?

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 09:30

I was just thinking because on iTunes I am tending to rent if it's possible. And I think I would, on a Kindle happily rent my book.

I agree, absolutely. There are few books I want to keep forever, and renting would be brilliant.

  • Lukeh30/11/2009 at 09:31

he is like me with digital music... if it doesnt come in physical form you shouldnt have to pay for it.

    Embrace the digital age!

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:32

Do you think people who make the content should get paid to do it or not really?

I think they get paid to much. however...

I am happy to pay to see them perform, and i am happy to pay for a CD, but only if i want to. MP3's should be free in my eyes. as far as i am concerned they always have been, so i see no reason to pay now

  • Lukeh30/11/2009 at 09:34

I don't get what you mean... you'd pay for all the tracks on the Cd but you'd just download them for free because they're not on a CD?

  • James30/11/2009 at 09:35

Christine, just noticed a spelling mistake in the blog entry it should be BlogtorWho not BlogterWho. ;)

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:36

I don't get what you mean... you'd pay for all the tracks on the Cd but you'd just download them for free because they're not on a CD?

With the CD i am paying for something i can keep. Digital content is like disposable cameras in my eyes

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 09:36

I think they get paid to much. however...

A few do... Most don't of course.

Personally I am really keen to help work out a sensible way for people to pay for digital media which isn't DRM heavy and works well because I want to encourage business to embrace a lack of physical media.

If online = free then people will stop producing.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 09:37

With the CD i am paying for something i can keep. Digital content is like disposable cameras in my eyes

Do you not pay for disposable cameras?

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 09:40

The whole concept of free online news is unsustainable. Traditional news sources are coming to this painful realisation.

They'll find a way to make it work or the whole industry will collapse.

You can't just give books away for free. Someone has to pay for it. Who is paying?

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 09:40

Christine, just noticed a spelling mistake in the blog entry it should be BlogtorWho not BlogterWho. ;)

    Fixed. What a cool blog!

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:40

nope, i pay for the pictures

You shortly won't be able to buy CDs or DVDs. Just as now it is hard to buy a Video Cassette. Will that change your perception of digital content I wonder?

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 09:41

nope, i pay for the pictures

Oh... good you've just hoist your own petard.

Good so you are paying for the music not the format... Excellent. Glad we can all agree :)

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 09:42

Good so you are paying for the music not the format... Excellent. Glad we can all agree :)

    :D

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:42

A few do... Most don't of course.

The music industry makes far too much money, then they argue there wont be any music if people dont pay a fortune for there music. I struggle to belive that

If footballers stopped earning millions would people stop playing football in the park? Of course not.

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 09:44

The music industry makes far too much money, then they argue there wont be any music if people dont pay a fortune for there music. I struggle to belive that

But that has no bearing on the digital vs CD debate.

We all know the music industry is twisted, but that doesn't mean artists shouldn't be recompensed for their work.

Why should you get their stuff for free?

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:44

Good so you are paying for the music not the format... Excellent. Glad we can all agree :)

I am paying for physical pictures, if you put them on my computer i will have them for free

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:45

Why should you get their stuff for free?

Because they are marketing to me so i may decide to go to a concert or buy a CD.

Why should i pay for it?

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 09:46

Because they are marketing to me so i may decide to go to a concert or buy a CD.

A CD is not marketing to you the idea of a concert?

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 09:47

Why should i pay for it?

If you scanned every page of my book and then put the pdf up for free on the web would you think that was reasonable behaviour or would you think that was wrong?

If I sold you the pdf and then you put it up for free on the web would you think you were doing something wrong?

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 09:48

Because they are marketing to me so i may decide to go to a concert or buy a CD.

I'd expect to receive a sampler CD for free as a teaser to encourage me to purchase a full album.

Like I often download itunes free tracks which have encouraged me to buy more tracks from the artist. The CD is an end in itself though, not just for marketing.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 09:49

The music industry makes far too much money, then they argue there wont be any music if people dont pay a fortune for there music. I struggle to belive that

Music industry is not equal to musicians yes I agree absolutely.

We don't need the record execs. Or to pay for the printing and distribution of the cds... We just need the musicians to be able to be paid for what they do.

While iTunes, for example, provides a way to sell digital music cutting out all of the middle men. A lot of people prefer using Spotify which is actually being run by the music industry to stop iTunes from encouraging this model. Artist get almost nothing from Spotify only the record labels get anything.

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 09:52

A lot of people prefer using Spotify which is actually being run by the music industry to stop iTunes from encouraging this model. Artist get almost nothing from Spotify only the record labels get anything.

I think a lot of people also use Spotify as a way to find new music which they then buy. That does fall under the marketing category. Spotify is certainly starting to encourage purchasing, albeit it as far away from iTunes as they can get.

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:53

If I sold you the pdf and then you put it up for free on the web would you think you were doing something wrong?

If you put the pdf of all or some of the book on the web and then i liked it and decided to buy the book, would that be a problem?

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 09:53

I think a lot of people also use Spotify as a way to find new music which they then buy. That does fall under the marketing category. Spotify is certainly starting to encourage purchasing, albeit it as far away from iTunes as they can get.

I used to listen to a lot of Pandora. Then they blocked it from the UK and I stopped. I can't really get back into using it now which upsets me :(

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:53

A CD is not marketing to you the idea of a concert?

It is but it is also a product in itself, something to keep and look at in the future

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 09:53

If you put the pdf of all or some of the book on the web and then i liked it and decided to buy the book, would that be a problem?

Why would you bother to buy the book though?? You have it already. For free.

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 09:54

It is but it is also a product in itself, something to keep and look at in the future

You can keep mp3s and listen to them for as long as you like in the future. How is that different?

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:54

Why would you bother to buy the book though?? You have it already. For free.

I have the pdf, its not a book

Yes... I mean Spotify is like the record labels putting music on the radio to encourage you to buy them. It's a strange sort of business model though.

If you promise not to be offended by bad language then read the following link by a friend of mine who runs an independent record label and who writes here about why he's chosen not to put his music on spotify: http://themarvellousmee.blogspot.com/2009/11/spotify-whats-in-it-for-us.html

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:55

they get corrupted deleted, and its just an electronic file. a cd comes with a booklet, artwork, a disk and a case

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 09:56

I have the pdf, its not a book

But it's the content that's valuable and time consuming to generate. You have full access to the content. Why would you need the physical book?

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:56

they get corrupted deleted, and its just an electronic file. a cd comes with a booklet, artwork, a disk and a case

    In essence it feels valuable.

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 09:57

they get corrupted deleted, and its just an electronic file. a cd comes with a booklet, artwork, a disk and a case

They can get lost, stolen, damaged.... I really don't get the difference.

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 09:57

    In essence it feels valuable.

Okay. You are welcome to your opinion, of course.

I find it mildly insulting that because something is not tangible, it is worthless.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 09:57

If you put the pdf of all or some of the book on the web and then i liked it and decided to buy the book, would that be a problem?

The point is not that I have put the book up on the web but rather that in the case of pirated music somebody other than the author / record label has put the music up on the web. That's the difference. If I put up a free copy of my old book to sell the new one that's my decision not yours no?

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:57

But it's the content that's valuable and time consuming to generate. You have full access to the content. Why would you need the physical book?

So i can hold it, read it... lend it

It becomes something when it is printed, bound with a cover.

If it wasnt why would alex have published it and not just had it online?

  • Lukeh30/11/2009 at 09:57

Because they are marketing to me so i may decide to go to a concert or buy a CD.

See, a sample of what you are to expect from an album for free sounds OK to me but I still think getting the entire thing for free is a bit absurd.

Before their recent album Muse got fans worldwide to take part in a hunt in various cities around the world (Moscow, Paris, etc) by placing military-style hints on their website

    http://ununitedeurasia.muse.mu/

That led to an 'agent' in each city location turning up at certain points when stated in the hints and giving the finder of them a code to unlock a new part of the song. eventually the fans managed to get the whole song based on their own work, no help from anyone but the fans coming together, working out the code, and getting to the right location at the right time. I love the idea of the fans working towards getting it and it's simply not handed to them for free, and it was fascinating watching the forums coming together to work out the codes.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 09:57

they get corrupted deleted, and its just an electronic file. a cd comes with a booklet, artwork, a disk and a case

The cd is far less durable than the file.

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 09:59

Absoloutly. I haven't illegally downloaded mp3 files of living artists since the days of Kazza. I have ripped a few of my friends CDs. otherwise i will just listen online for free.

I still wouldn't pay for an mp3 as i dont assign it any value

  • Lukeh30/11/2009 at 09:59

    NOOOOOO.

Mario Theissen won't be at Sauber next year :(

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 09:59

It becomes something when it is printed, bound with a cover.

I really don't know what to say to this.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 09:59

I agree... There is a difference. The same way that Mr C was pleased when his picture got into a magazine.

But... And this is the point... It isn't better... It's different.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 10:00

I still wouldn't pay for an mp3 as i dont assign it any value

Just so you realise exactly what you are doing Nick... You are on a Podcast's website... saying that MP3s have no value...

Just so you connect the dots...

And if you were about to ask about F1 and so on… nothing new at the moment. If I get the opportunity to drive on of these cars anytime soon, I’ll be absolutely delighted for sure! I really don't think there is anywhere. The rumour is Renault, but I have no faith in manufacturers sticking around. Maybe one of the new teams, but I don't think it'll happen.

  • Lukeh30/11/2009 at 10:21

He should become a comedian in Germany, seeing as according to him there is no fun in germany

    Morning!!

I feel like a team with Nico and Nick in would not have enough oomph to do very well. However, Mercedes would be a step up, wouldn't it?

I fear the team wont do as well as last year, so it would be a step up from Williams/BMW but they won't be fighting for the title (probably - this is for when in a years time Nico wins and this comment is held against me ;) )

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 10:23

I feel like a team with Nico and Nick in would not have enough oomph to do very well. However, Mercedes would be a step up, wouldn't it?

It's weird but while the Mercedes thing is a step up I think Nick has a lot of loyalty to Peter Sauber. And also he was always quite annoyed by Mercedes for passing over him for Kimi.

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 10:25

It's weird but while the Mercedes thing is a step up I think Nick has a lot of loyalty to Peter Sauber. And also he was always quite annoyed by Mercedes for passing over him for Kimi.

It would make sense for him to stay, as it's clearly a team he feels comfortable at, and can produce the consistent, if not astounding, results.

Was he a BMW man before? He did say he was focusing on saving the team before he looked at this own future, so at least he's a man of his word!

  • Journeyer30/11/2009 at 10:36

Okay so here's another question I have... Where should Nick Heidfeld go? Sauber or Mercedes?

gotta be merc. Time is running out for him and he needs a quick car to show he deserves to be at the front of the grid. And Merc has the best chance of doing that in the short and long term.

  • Journeyer30/11/2009 at 10:37

He is a BMW man, but after what the board did, I was expecting he'd stay with Sauber in F1. I guess not.

  • F1Wolf30/11/2009 at 10:39

he was, he was (is) the head of BMW motorsports

  • F1Wolf30/11/2009 at 10:40

I am just wondering if there is any significance in that announcement. It may mean that now he believes or is sure the team is safely on 2010 grid ?

    Random question:

What does everyone think of having a karting competition on British Grand Prix weekend? I'm thinking in terms of Thursday evening or possibly Monday of that weekend, assuming Bernie allows one venue or the other to go ahead.

Note that I haven't worked out the logistics yet, this is more a test to gauge interest in the idea.

I would also like to point out that the book listed below your pdf is an absolutely trashy novel that I should be laughed at for owning and one that I would never, ever even look at in actual book form, but it was only $3 and I thought 'meh, I can spend $3' and it was number one on the Kindle best sellers list at the time. I think selling in that format for a low price would have made the author far more money than 'conventional' methods would have. Very #MFC

I think selling in that format for a low price would have made the author far more money than 'conventional' methods would have. Very #MFC

It's interesting. And without wanting to get too bogged down in the detail there is a value signal that is given by the price. It is something that Stuart C mentioned a while back. And while the new model is being established it's hard to work out exactly what the right price should be. I guessed at half price really...

Because I always believe in full disclosure... If you buy my book in print it costs you £10. If you buy it direct from the publishers I get £5.13 per copy. But people prefer to buy from Amazon and so I am happy to make their lives as easy as possible. If you buy from Amazon (or any other shop except the publishers website) I get £2.12. The PDF sale to you made me £3.26. I thought about keeping that number the same as Amazon which would have made the PDF £3.58. But... I didn't... I don't know why.

Panda trying Australian grown bamboo: "yes, distinct aromas of pears and gooseberries, with an underlying earthy flintyness. I remember some kid at school explaining their theory that it was best to always be one day ahead on the calendar. Why? Because you always get chocolate on Christmas day. So the 25th one isn't needed. I always quite worried about what that kid would become... Bit too sneaky!

So your Family buy you crap presents then?

  • Amy30/11/2009 at 14:52

So your Family buy you crap presents then?

no, I just wouldn't ask for something that costs hundreds of dollars so I buy it for myself and justify the price by saying 'hey, it's Christmas!'

My wife tries every year to enforce a "rule". A rule that I NEVER AGREED TO IN THE WEDDING VOWS! ANYTHING we buy for ourselves after November 1st must get wrapped and go under the tree.

Sometimes it's not a big deal. But if she had tried to force me to put Modern Warfare 2 under the tree and wait until after Christmas to play it... well, I love her and my family very much. BUT A MAN HAS HIS LIMITS!!

    :D

I'm quite astonished that she hasn't yet said anything about getting a tree. Normally it's the weekend after thanksgiving, but I think this year she's too busy with her jewelry making hobby :)

But whether the tree is there or not is irrelevant to this rule

  • Christine30/11/2009 at 14:56

Apparently, they have put a tree up in the office upstairs.

I refuse to go up there.

    I am so very sorry.

I've seen the words "no value", "worthless", and "disposable." It is too late to backtrack on that now.

    Really huge Sorry

    I feel really really bad.

I really didn’t mean anything about what I said earlier to be mean, horrible, offensive or in anyway demeaning about what you produce here. It came out really badly, and reading back though it I can’t believe how stupid I was being

It was completely my fault in saying what I did the way I did. I value this site and what you guys do here hugely. Finding this site introduced me in to a whole new world of F1 online with blogs, discussions and news. But it goes so much further than that, the people here are brilliant, the discussions are amazing, and the site has literally changed my life recently.

I completely understand though if you don’t want me posting here anymore, regardless of what I meant, what I said was terrible and I am hugely sorry for it. Beyond that, I know a lot of my comments are uninteresting chitchat that helps no one, and whilst you guys are incredibly tolerant of different views, I might have taken it too far from time to time. If you don’t want me here I will go, and respect that.

In any case I have really enjoyed my time here; you have a wonderful site, and thank you so much for having me. I may not have contributed all that much but I really enjoyed doing my slot on sidepodradio, and joining in with things when I have has also been brilliant.

I don’t know if it will help, but I have blogged about what I was trying to say before and how I didn’t mean it to be about sidepodcast in any way. http://webpilotdown.wordpress.com/2009/11/30/when-you-say-stupid-things-sometimes-its-because-you-are-a-fool/

    Thanks again, and apologies

    Noted. Good post.

I also apologise for what I said as I shouldn't have.

I will try to be less stupid/annoying. Please tell me to scram if i am though!

i'll comment on your post in a second, something that came to mind after my reaction this morning is i now have an ever growing list in my head that reads thus:

things that cannot be discussed rationally with nick:

    - itunes

    - nelson piquet jnr.

    - the f1 race abu dhabi

    - mfc

the last item was added this morning. i don't think i have a list like that for anyone else, but i know that if any of these subjects come up i have to walk away. which seems daft, and i don't know why it's the case.

but i do know christine and i now won't ever mention abu dhabi if we can help it, because any hope of rational debate went out of the window the week following the race.

    and you did that.

and i don't get it, because you're a perfectly sane and normal person to meet face to face.

but please don't let that stop you from commenting, i just wanted you to know.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 15:49

    Bancruptcy? there is no bankruptcy!

The biggest ever 1 day fall of the market yes. Bankruptcy no.

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 15:55

things that cannot be discussed rationally with nick:

Oh dear, please dont stop discussing them, i do get a bit carried away

I will do my best to avoid any commenting on them.

Abu Dhabi is a bit silly, i think i am emotionally attached, i havent even been to the city though

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 15:58

The biggest ever 1 day fall of the market yes. Bankruptcy no.

It is for a while, but it has been far more erratic than this.

Nooone seems to really know whats going on. there is far to much empty real estate owned by investors in this city though. the development i wanted to live in has 15% occupancy and i couldnt get a flat. Its about 18 skyscrapers!

  • fourstar30/11/2009 at 16:00

    Afternoon all.

and i don't get it, because you're a perfectly sane and normal person to meet face to face.

Alison and I had to stop Nick from carrying on with a debate on another subject when we met in real life. It was a strange moment... I said, "I think this", Nick disagreed, I said... "oh okay, interesting". But then Nick wanted to carry on the debate even though I wasn't engaging. It was, as I say, an odd moment.

    heheheh.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 16:01

    I commented on Nick's post:

I think you make some good points here.

I had some thoughts about what happened earlier:

Something that is hard to remember when the conversation is flowing in real time conversation is two-fold: it’s very rare that you can make a sweeping statement without upsetting somebody and on the internet you can never take it back.

What I mean is that while you have taken it back now here how many people will comment trawl on Sidepodcast and see the conversation unfold live again. And revive it. How many people might search for your name in the future and find your comments. It’s actually part of the reason that I post with my real name in the comments. It reminds me, I think, to be respectful of others in the comments. Because if you really wanted to you could find out who I am, where I work and cause trouble.

So to my mind the two things go together. If you feel yourself about to make an unequivocal “1+1 = 2 – fact” it better be actually axiomatic or it could come back to haunt you. Instead it’s better to go for softer language or avoid the issue entirely. Certainly on a site that isn’t really about arguments :)

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 16:02

    Have done so too

    Whoah! backlog!

(You can add separate calendars share between you and it all syncs with your phone)

This made my phone ring the other day and really scared me!

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 16:23

Has fourstar gone back to some actual work?

    Maybe... (attempts to look busy!)

  • fourstar30/11/2009 at 16:23

Has fourstar gone back to some actual work?

    Yes.

    Oh.

I can probably do something on the 12th if I'm not painting stairs, building wardrobes or laying carpets.

  • Bassano Clapper30/11/2009 at 16:23

...They could cut a lot more costs by not paying us to have pointless meetings about it...

My department's slogan is "Safety is out first priority"

Though they do have good reason for that

  • fourstar30/11/2009 at 16:24

My department's slogan is "Safety is out first priority"

As long as it's not spelling :)

  • James30/11/2009 at 16:24

Not very M|F|C is it? :D

Katherine and I use a product called Google Calendar ;)

(You can add separate calendars share between you and it all syncs with your phone)

    I've started using that :D

    Doh!

My excuse is that I'm still partially doped up on dental meds

  • Bassano Clapper30/11/2009 at 16:30

Almost had my appointment cancelled as I was late [my mandatory companion/carer was stuck in traffic]

Luckily, this being the NHS, they were running late themselves [already, at 10am]

    Nick,

we've all been there - but things will be forgotten in time. SPC is much different to other forums in that everyone is a lot more thoughtful and respectful like that. I am sure in time the whole episode will be forgotten ;)

  • Bassano Clapper30/11/2009 at 16:36

    Oooooh party?? :D

Well, we say 'party' when in fact we mean 'booze up'

    Same, same but different

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)30/11/2009 at 16:37

Woop woop! Awful meeting 1 out the way, merely boring meeting 2 still to go... I'm so bored. I hate paying lip service to improving safety then once you file proposals they're all rejected on cost grounds. They could cut a lot more costs by not paying us to have pointless meetings about it...

that is terrible. Safety should always come first!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)30/11/2009 at 16:39

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 16:55

Yes for about 5 seconds. But she didn't know she was being recorded. Which I think probably made a difference.

Yes for about 5 seconds. But she didn't know she was being recorded. Which I think probably made a difference.

    ahh :)

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 16:56

She was talking about a snail eating a ikea catalog.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 16:56

Is the episode recorded over one day?

Just one evening. 5 hours. Why do you ask?

Have you noticed the extra odd thing?

  • Bassano Clapper30/11/2009 at 16:57

Have you noticed the extra odd thing?

    Not at all, just curious

  • jpancoast30/11/2009 at 16:58

Have you noticed the extra odd thing?

Yes, I did. And I went to talk to my Doctor about it. He said that sometimes radiation exposure causes humans to grow extra appendages.

  • fourstar30/11/2009 at 16:58

She was talking about a snail eating a ikea catalog.

    As you do.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 16:58

Adrian and I on that day spent from 7am to 11:30pm in each others company. Talking almost constantly (even on the train back from the office). Only the last 5 hours were recorded. It's a strange thing.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 16:58

    As you do.

    As she does.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 16:59

Adrian Fourstar and I on that day spent from 7am to 11:30pm in each others company. Talking almost constantly (even on the train back from the office). Only the last 5 hours were recorded. It's a strange thing.

The strange thing is that you're still relatively sober 2/3 into the edit... so far

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 17:00

The extra odd thing, that I was wondering if anyone would notice, is that Katherine is talking about the lentils earlier on, and then Fourstar and I are talking about temperature and Christine and that but Katherine doesn't chime in, and then she's back taunting Fourstar about his fear of touching glass ;)

  • Bassano Clapper30/11/2009 at 17:01

It's a thing I get incredibly sensitive. I have always liked the fact that Sidepodcast is family friendly. And while I wouldn't say that our show is family friendly as such... There is no swearing and no rudeness, which is I think quite an odd thing considering where we plough our furrow.

It will be interesting to see how this evolves as the guests change.

  • Alex Andronov30/11/2009 at 17:51

Not sidepodcast archives... But a fantastic sign of why writing things on the internet can be a bit scary. Here's an amazing article from a journalist back in 1997 where he says that Apple made a terrible mistake buying Next (the OS architecture that Apple currently uses is the one they bought from Next). And that anyone suspecting it as a sign that they only did this was to get Steve Jobs back is wide of the mark:

    http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/1997/02/03/221517/index.htm

    From the article:

Most of the commentary I've seen about this decision is off the mark, especially the talk about Jobs coming back to save Apple. That is sheer nonsense. He won't be anywhere near the company.

    ooops

    Full list here

I know this is an F1 place, but I think its going to Haye.

    Not now :(

Having not followed testing live... does the f1.com live timing work when it is on? Do the circuit do anything?

or do we just wait until its over?

  • Pat W30/11/2009 at 19:11

he won't get it though will he?

    I think he'll win it.

  • Scott Woodwiss30/11/2009 at 19:11

Last time a racing driver won SPOTY was Hill in 1996. But judging last year, I doubt it.

As much as I think Jenson is awesome...

I'd give it to Ryan Giggs... for his age he has been *exceptional* in 2009...

Strauss because he retired as the winning Ashes captain?

Im very suprissed flintoff isnt on the list, i had him down for the main competition.

I dont know how many people like Haye, he is a tad brash for the BBC viewer i think jenson stands a reasonable chance

    It's not about BBC viewers

    It's about sports lovers

  • Steven Roy30/11/2009 at 19:14

There is no clear favourite that I can see. Andy Murray is on the list as are David Haye who just won the heavyweight championship of the world, Tom Daley who won the world diving championship at the age of 15 or something so he will get a lot of votes from mothers etc. Ryan Giggs of Manachester United is nominated. The only other one I remember is Philips Idowu who is a triple jumper. There are ten on the list.

  • lou30/11/2009 at 19:14

he won't get it though will he?

people said he'd never win another race... let alone become a champion... :P

  • Lukeh30/11/2009 at 19:15

The other awards to be presented on the night will include

    - Team of the Year

Anyone think Brawn GP have got a shout in there? I know it could be a team in many senses of the word, but it's been quite a turn around. Also...

    - Overseas Personality

Luca Badoer's got that one in the bag.

  • RG30/11/2009 at 19:15

Tom Daley who won the world diving championship at the age of 15 or something so he will get a lot of votes from mothers etc.

    grrr Tom Daley grrrr

Cavendish came 4th in Tour de France. Outside shot?

  • Nick in Dubai30/11/2009 at 19:16

he won't get it though will he?

If jake is co presenting he might pull in a few more votes for jenson...

in a totaly unbiased BBC way :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)30/11/2009 at 19:16

And that's what matters in 2009 - not a stupid popularity contest. Half the voters don't know the first thing about F1!

of course. i think we had a similar conversation a while ago. so long as it doesn't duplicate what christine has already covered, go for it.

Of course you can! If you couldn't, your instructor wouldn't have let you take the test! (as for failing, don't worry. From my experience, those who pass first time get quite cocky and crash earlier than those who don't. I may just be sore, as I failed twice before passing though...)

See I told you that you can drive ;)

  • lou30/11/2009 at 21:20

    What happened?

in my test of my lesson?

my test was a disaster.. i had my two hours of practice before hand which went perfectly, i was so happy in the car and felt really confident. then during my exam i just paniced loads.. i stalled once at the start (which i never do.. ) and it spooked me throughout my whole exam. i'm not good under pressure as it is but it was just so spooked i messed up one manoeuvre (which i'd never done wrong before) and of course, that's a major.. so automatic fail :s however i got 5 other minors.. for small things which is pretty good tbh.. but meh.. it was a really bad 40mins of panicing.

So obviously me being me the whole thing destroyed all confidence i had in driving. i had my first driving lesson since today, and it was perfect.. i remembered i can actually drive. best driving lesson i've ever had tbh...

  • lou30/11/2009 at 21:20

Sometimes it just happens though. The amount you've progressed since the summer shows you know what to do and how to do it and you're more than capable, it was just one of them days. I'm sure next time out it'll be completely different, especialy as your test was during that awful week for you.

Jenson failed his test the first time, remember. I hear he's quite a good driver. ;)

You have to learn to just forget about a mistake as soon as you make it. Stalling is not a problem. It happens to us all occasionally. 2 hours seems a lot just before a test. I would have thought an hour would give you enough to be confident but not to tire you and affect your concentration. I am sure you will pass next time.

Of the three main guys in my group of friends who passed first time, two rolled their cars avoiding animals at night, and the second currently has a rear bumper and boot door which is a different colour to the rest of the car (due to dents being replaced). I've yet to crash (realizes he's jinxed himself now...)

I was tailgated and lost control of the car. Cue lots of fishtailing later and I am in the median barrier on the highway. It was a cable fence with concrete supports which got ripped out and tore up the underside of the car :(

Dad wasn't even mad - he wanted to get a new car soon and he got a better one out of it!

I've yet to crash (realizes he's jinxed himself now...)

Don't swerve to avoid small animals. Just kill them it is a lot safer. Of course if a cow runs out in front of you tail first when you are doing 80mph its best not to hit it.

  • Lukeh30/11/2009 at 21:31

Apparently Mac users just took Twitter down in protest? ....the hell?

  • lou30/11/2009 at 21:32

I was tailgated and lost control of the car. Cue lots of fishtailing later and I am in the median barrier on the highway. It was a cable fence with concrete supports which got ripped out and tore up the underside of the car :(

    oh my!!

  • Chris30/11/2009 at 21:32

One of them was a deer. I'm sure that's acceptable to avoid. Pointy bits at head level and all. I think the other was a badger though...

  • jpancoast30/11/2009 at 21:32

I passed on my first go (somehow) and have yet to crash so thats good* :)

I've been the driver in two accidents (both my fault), way back in the first few years of me having my license....

What really amazes me is (so far) I've never been pulled over in my STi.

  • Lady Snowcat30/11/2009 at 21:33

"he won't get it though will he?"

Depends how people take his defection...

    More contractual wrangling...

It sounds worse than it was. All that happened to me was "ooh I'm out of control... slight bump... scraping noise... pull over"...

Deer don't count as small animals. I know someone who was driving down a country road when a deer jumped a hedge and landed on his car.

One of the forums I used to be on had an annual calender, where each day was a new embarrassing photo of a forum member. It's hard to recreate here, as photo wise we're relatively anonymous (or most of us are, anyway) Most difficult to recreate would be the embarrassing admin pic, as Christine has more sense!

I wrote the Villeneuve post as fast as I could type it but then I had been gathering information on him for 20 years. For the Rosemeyer post even though I knew the bits I wasnted to include I spent about three days reading about him and checking and double-checking facts before I started to write a word.

Why did you open the door early? What!!! You are given all of the doors on a traditional one... Do you open all of those doors early ;)

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 22:26

No... some were bad luck, others a lack of the correct safety gear ... one was even a customer...

Right but we have proper safety gear. There really isn't a lot of dangerous work. The biggest risk for me is personal safety and any requests to increase staffing so people don't have to work in areas alone at night are met with a straight no.

Right. But even if you have all the right gear, accidents can still happen. The most important thing with safety is just to stop and think sometimes...

Right. But even if you have all the right gear, accidents can still happen. The most important thing with safety is just to stop and think sometimes...

Yes. But not to have a whole day of my life swallowed by pointless meetings that some people have travelled literally hundreds of miles to attend!

I make people fill in accident reports that are reviewed on site monthly. We also have strict recording of any near misses which are also reviewed. I've passed a couple of issues up to my head office in the past so they can issue memos.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)30/11/2009 at 22:35

Why is that a waste of time? What if you didn't do it and someone got hurt?

I must admit, I'm now in an industry which is quite dangerous, but the principle is still the same...

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 22:38

Why is that a waste of time? What if you didn't do it and someone got hurt?

You didn't sit through the inane rubbish I did today.

I don't think accident reports are a waste of time at all. I was saying, I take the time to use them properly, review them regularly and I take any concerns raised seriously.

I don't really have much more to say about it other than that I had a very odd day where people moaned about paper cuts as if I should care about them....

I had yet another mini-test this evening in Medical Terminology class. I passed it, which didn't surprise me (the fact that eight of my classmates failed a 20-question vocabulary test was the real puzzle). However, I did make one fairly amusing error.

There was a question asking for the medical term for "lack of oxygen caused by a reduction of blood flow in the coronary arteries". Unable to remember the exact term, I decided to try building the word from root words, prefixes and suffixes...

...and ended up with "hypoxic microhaemarteriocardia". Even as I looked at this 14-syllable monstrosity, I had an inkling this might possibly be the wrong answer (as a general rule, any term you can't pronounce is a wrong answer), but I was stumped.

So what was the correct answer? "Ischaemia"... ...which has the grand total of 3 syllables. Ironically, the ridiculous construction I'd submitted would have scored me half a mark in the real exam because it described the condition in appropriate medical terms*, but I'd hate to be the medical professional who had to interpret my answer in real life!

    * - It wouldn't have got the full mark because ischaemia is the most sensible term for the condition out of the ones that exist in the syllabus.

  • Alison30/11/2009 at 22:41

Fair enough. We had a guy get killed last week, so it's a bit more serious than paper cuts :(

Erm okay. Sorry to have raised a sensitive issue. I do have concerns about safety of staff which I have an ongoing battle to address but other than that, it's really not at all risky. Other than regular accidents like tripping and yes.... paper cuts.

No it's ok, it's not sensitive really. I guess the reason why I look at it more seriously is that we get reminded all the time that accidents happen.

  • Pat W30/11/2009 at 23:39

I'll have to think about it. Depends what money is like nearer the time, considering I'm doing the karting meet as well. There's rubbish transport at this end during the day, nothing at night, so if I go and get drunk I'll need to stay somewhere, I'm not staying outside in December... and I can't go up and not get drunk..

  • Lukeh30/11/2009 at 23:39
