Happy December, all! Yes, the last month has arrived. I hope you are going to have a chocolatey breakfast.

It's Lewis from the comments (Mr C's No 1 fan!). Here's some news that I found:

  • Manor have been officially taken over by Virgin and will now be known as Virgin Racing. (There is a joke I would add, but I think it would be a tad inappropriate!)
  • Canada's back! I am so happy! This is the only circuit where there are actually incidents on the track instead of boring processions.
  • In Sidepodnews, don't forget to join in the fun for the 2009 Sidepodchristmas Carol. This year, it is Jingle Bells and you can see mine, Christine's and everybody else's lyrics on the wiki. We've had some lyrics about Rubens, about the Brawn rise to glory, and about Bernie's grip on the weather. We need more, and we also need voices! Pick up the phone and call!!

I think that will do. I hope your chocolate will be tasty, and have a merry Christmas. Tell us what you plan to do over the festive period, and as ever, Christine shall see you in the comments (and you might see me too!)

Some of those shots I love. I think a car looks good to music when it's bobbing about over the bumps in the road. Looks like it's moving to the beat :P

Question to Mr C, or Christine if she's still up...where do you get all your amazing photos from?

  • guille230601/12/2009 at 00:43

    hello people, hello December...

  • me01/12/2009 at 00:44

Question to Mr C, or Christine if she's still up...where do you get all your amazing photos from?

    am still here.

funny you should ask, because the copyright display bit is broken in the new SPC theme. i have to fix it this week, or we'll get grief for not assigning credit. f1 big picture currently lists the copyright beneath each pic though and spc will soon do the same (again): http://www.f1minute.com/category/f1-big-picture/

sometimes we buy the rights to use the pics from getty, but most come from teams.

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 00:45

so for example...that FIF1 one, you got off say, their website and then put the credit next do it?

  • me01/12/2009 at 00:48

nope. you have to apply for permission. each team provides a bunch of images for editorial use (e.g. you can't use them in your header or create an image gallery from them), they accompany editorial content.

  • me01/12/2009 at 00:48

you can sign up with the likes of sutton. but they cost about the same as getty. more choice and better archives, but not free.

my long december started two weeks ago. it seems everybody I work with had a surge of productivity, all of them at the same time...

For what i want what i've got is great. For all the main series about from F2 (at the moment. pleaaaaaase). I've got a login, and they basically gallery all their pictures and i can download any i want to put on the site. All they ask is that i put a link to their sites, but there are more than enough pictures.

yeah, picapp works good for f1 and blogs, but am not a huge fan of it, plus its not great for other series, plus for some reason it always seems to go awol on my blog. not sure why though.

ok. now that I have google wave account... what do I do with it? (#existential_questions)

It appears at first glance to be some sort of collaborative document editor with extra fiddly bits attached? I probably got that wrong, just 1st impressions.

Oh Good. Startled Bunny. I need to have a Tremayne at you. I was listening to your excellent podcast on the train home last night and because there were some songs I liked, I was eagerly awaiting to hear the song list at the end.

But GRRR Your distorted voice made it impossible to hear the names GRRR!!! :D

Any chance of telling me who wrote the song called 'DIY Slab Mum Party B***h' from 'A Band Called Quob'? ;)

  • startledbunny01/12/2009 at 07:54

    It's ICQ Chat from 1999!

I managed to make a "wave" which had a yes/no poll on it, and a google map. woo.hoo. apparently you can see the document as it's being typed. I don't know why I was excited by this. I've barely used skype, or any kind of one-to-one/group communication app. Why would I now want people to see me type?

yup. look. i can show a map. can you see it? (Yes/No/Maybe)

if i was planning a road trip, or a show with somebody, then it might be the tiniest bit useful, but there is skype. it's quicker to talk than to type it out (although us "distorted" types would have to repeat ourselves) ;)

  • startledbunny01/12/2009 at 08:11

Neil Cole (Dave's WRC presenter) has suggested Raikkonen has signed up for a whole season of WRC. Wonder if he knows something we don't?

  • F1Wolf01/12/2009 at 08:36

And yet it was completely pointless, right?

I do have ideas how to make quite good use of wave at work. But with their current rate of accepting new people and their speed of allowing people to invite some people and the time it takes to actually process that invite it will take quite a while before I can build useful network of wavers :-)

  • F1Wolf01/12/2009 at 08:38

I used to love it - I used to have realtime chats with all my mates in the evenings, even had a girlfriend on it (all people that I also knew in the flesh)...

I always hated how slow it was to start, the annoying sound it made when it started and how it slowed down the good old think pad :-) then later I found out that I can use other clients for ICQ chats (like Trillian). By that time however Skype arrived and ICQ got fired :-)

#MFC: Bitterwallet says that local news is starting to charge for online access.

They reckon that this will only work for local news because it will be too easy to find national/international news for free. I must admit, I'd pay for news if I couldn't find it anywhere else...

Yeah, I'd happily pay for news. In fact I still buy a newspaper quite regularly. I can't be doing with local news though so this wouldn't work so well on me.

I would definitely be willing to pay for news from my source of choice though. I'm quite picky.

Really? Well that's a rubbish business model then. Newspapers make more money from advertising. Advertising works the more people that read it. Give away a paper for free and you not only have a large readership, but advertisers willing to cough up money. Simples.

We have two local papers, one "broadsheet" and one more "tabloidy" and they both have a strong local readership.

Isn't the whole point that people are coming to realise that giving things away for free isn't a functional way to make money. London can't support the number of free papers it has and it's huuuuuuuge.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/12/2009 at 08:59

But there are four free papers here in Denmark - and they are so large they have regional editions. Problem is that they are full of adverts!

  • Dank01/12/2009 at 09:01

Free papers are pants though. Often they are full of errors and advertorials :(

We have a local rag and one that covers the county, which you have to pay for. I have to say the latter grinds my gears more than the freebie does. Mostly because it tries to be controversial and every page is full of angry people: http://apiln.blogspot.com/

  • Alison01/12/2009 at 09:02

But there are four free papers here in Denmark - and they are so large they have regional editions. Problem is that they are full of adverts!

Yeah the metro here does regional editions. They're facing competition from a couple of others in London.

I read a huuuuge thing about it a couple of months ago. News organisations in this country are in a dire state. Advertising alone is not able to support high quality investigative journalism. Which is ironic considering the number of people who want to go into journalism.

You can't expect to be paid to do reporting, if you're not willing to pay to read the products.

Does Christian Horner realise that if he swaps engines now for any reason than force majuere, that his team will forfeit all its points for the year? The team's engine as stated on the entry list cannot be changed without that penalty owing to the way the regulations are laid out. I'd tell you which article, but the FIA site is refusing to show me its text and links (only the navigation structure and pictures).

I failed NaNoWriMo gloriously (1000 words... ...discovered I can't write a sci-fi crime novel, especially when I only outline the plot and find myself looking for a new home for my blog at the same time).

Depends on the paper. One of my local papers is fairly pricey, another one is pretty cheap and a third is delivered free to everyone living in the area. They frequently have very similar news because a lot of the news is of interest to all three localities.

I don't use the internet for local news though because it makes it difficult to prove I looked at it there if the JobCentre asks.

  • Alianora La Canta01/12/2009 at 12:59

Yes. But local papers aren't free here?

    Really? Well that's a rubbish business model then. Newspapers make more money from advertising. {Comment #164}

Strangely, all three of the above-mentioned papers seem to be doing fine financially (after all having setbacks when the recession initially hit because both readers and advertisers plummeted).

Does Christian Horner realise that if he swaps engines now for any reason than force majuere, that his team will forfeit all its points for the year? The team's engine as stated on the entry list cannot be changed without that penalty owing to the way the regulations are laid out. I'd tell you which article, but the FIA site is refusing to show me its text and links (only the navigation structure and pictures).

    this one?

    13.3

A competitor may change the make of engine at any time during the Championship. All points scored with

an engine of different make to that which was first entered in the Championship may count (and will be

aggregated) for the assessment of a commercial benefit, however such points will not count towards (nor

be aggregated for) the FIA Formula One Constructors Championship. A major car manufacturer may not

directly or indirectly supply engines for more than two teams of two cars each without the consent of the

FIA. For the purposes of this Article 13.3, a major car manufacturer is a company whose shares are

quoted on a recognised stock exchange or the subsidiary of such a company.

    I still don't know what these things are. Do you have to write a post a day? {Comment #235}

For National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), the idea is to write a complete novel of at least 50000 words in the 30 days of November. There are smaller versions connected with different months, but November is by far the biggest. Hence why me managing 1000 words in the month was a major failure - I was a good 49000 words short!

For National Blog Posting Month, the goal is to write at least one blog entry of some description every day for a month. Sidepodcast's Daily threads mean it manages this every month without fail, but for us less dedicated followers it can be a challenge to come up with enough content to supply entries consistently for a month.

Thank you very much, Kathi - that's the article. If Red Bull competes with anything other than the Renaults entered on the list, then it will lose all its Constructor's points for 2010 (though it will still get the money attached to whichever position it attains).

My last job I worked from home every day until near the end of my time there when the company finally got an office. Probably a good thing, I found out near the end my boss was quite the racist.

McLaren seriously have a jacket called 'Windbreaker'?

    Seriously?!

  • Rich01/12/2009 at 18:48

Even though it would mean he had won?

Talking about buying your championships - the Macca 2010 Team Victory T-Shirt is just pushing it a wee bit. Jenson goes from Yellow to Orange - possibly his next destination - Ferrari Red.

  • Lukeh01/12/2009 at 18:48

Jessops is good but some products can be really expensive (as most things in photography are).. you can get some great deals on ebay if you know the specifications of what you're looking for though

I can't imagine that is the case. Brawn did it last year and if they lose all their points Lou is going to be mildly miffed to say the least

Joe Saward saying that Virgin deal is siimilar in style to Marlboro's with Ferrari:

The deal, as far as I can understand it, is that Virgin has done what Marlboro did with Ferrari and has acquired the sponsorship rights to the team and will then sell the space on to those who wish to be associated with the team, or who think that it is a good investment

wasn't it bernie that wavered the entry fee for the team so they could compete? they were at the very back of the grid too... if they had entered under honda wouldn't they have had 17/18 on the cars rather than 22/23? weren't they a new entry?

I can't remember the details but the relevant point was after Hond entered the team switched engines to Mercedes and as far as we know they have not been docked all their points yet.

They were treated as a new entry.

That was fine last year, they helped fill the grid. but if it happened this year with RBR there would be all sorts or lawsuits i am sure

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 21:21

Thats it. Andy the Soup Chef is his name from now on to me.

    :D

  • paul01/12/2009 at 21:23

So, DiResta second, despite minimum laps, and running a Force India. Why doesn't he have an F1 drive yet?

  • RG01/12/2009 at 21:23

So, DiResta second, despite minimum laps, and running a Force India. Why doesn't he have an F1 drive yet?

He clearly upset the Gods as a child.

  • paul01/12/2009 at 21:24

He clearly upset the Gods as a child.

    Oh dear. Mark Webber style?

  • Nick in Dubai01/12/2009 at 21:24

So, DiResta second, despite minimum laps, and running a Force India. Why doesn't he have an F1 drive yet?

    Hopefully Benz will take note

  • paul01/12/2009 at 21:26

    Hopefully Benz will take note

I can't understand why FIF1 confirmed their drivers before this test.

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 21:26

So, DiResta second, despite minimum laps, and running a Force India. Why doesn't he have an F1 drive yet?

Because the majority of people in charge of giving out F1 drives lnow nothing about driving and wouldn't recognise a good driver at a Luca Badoer convention.

I woudn't read too much into the times as we have no idea of the set ups of the car or fuel loads etc.

  • paul01/12/2009 at 21:27

I woudn't read too much into the times as we have no idea of the set ups of the car or fuel loads etc.

I read that he beat Praffett driving a Mclaren. Not a bad start.

  • Nick in Dubai01/12/2009 at 21:28

Because the majority of people in charge of giving out F1 drives lnow nothing about driving and wouldn't recognise a good driver at a Luca Badoer convention.

Im not sure I would recognise a good driver at a luca badoer convention? ;)

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 21:31

I read that he beat Praffett driving a Mclaren. Not a bad start.

It depends on all sorts of things like when they ran. Paffett started in the morning then handed over to Turvey so he was not on track during happy hour where di Resta was.

  • paul01/12/2009 at 21:33

It depends on all sorts of things like when they ran. Paffett started in the morning then handed over to Turvey so he was not on track during happy hour where di Resta was.

    Oh ok then. Details, details.

Does anyone know if teams are running any car developments, or are they all using 2009 cars?

  • me01/12/2009 at 21:36

Does anyone know if teams are running any car developments, or are they all using 2009 cars?

ferrari are running sans wheel-fairings. which is what they'll have to do in 2010. they may be running the smaller front wheels.

mind you so might all the teams. hard to say.

  • Scott Woodwiss01/12/2009 at 21:39

Some kind of aero data attachment?

    http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1323716

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 21:40

    Oh ok then. Details, details.

Unfortunately teams don't give out that kind of info. Some drivers will have effectively brand new chassis which are still stiff where others will have chassis that may have done a dozen races and are getting a bit more flexible. We have no idea what condition anyon's engine is in or whether they have the ideal aero configuaration for Jerez or just the wings that happened to be lying around the factory.

  • Maverick01/12/2009 at 21:40

So, DiResta second, despite minimum laps, and running a Force India. Why doesn't he have an F1 drive yet?

Fair enough, it was very cold but none of the times were all that spectacular

  • jpancoast01/12/2009 at 21:44

Some kind of aero data attachment?

    http://www.aut.../photo.php/id/1323716

Looks like something to measure deflections or stress on the wing (so, yes, basically to your question :) )

  • Bassano Clapper01/12/2009 at 21:45

Looks like something to measure deflections or stress on the wing (so, yes, basically to your question :) )

Was what I was thinking too

Some kind of aero data attachment?

    http://www.aut.../photo.php/id/1323716

Very odd. Benetton used to have wings with stressed wires in the 1980s but I have no idea what RBR are doing here

  • me01/12/2009 at 21:45

Fair enough, it was very cold but none of the times were all that spectacular

even if they were running smaller front wheels?

  • Bassano Clapper01/12/2009 at 21:47

even if they were running smaller front wheels?

    Not nitpicking, just seeking clarification

The front wheels next year are just narrower, not smaller in radius, correct?

  • Maverick01/12/2009 at 21:47

even if they were running smaller front wheels?

Aren't they supposed to help? :-)

  • me01/12/2009 at 21:48

    Not nitpicking, just seeking clarification

The front wheels next year are just narrower, not smaller in radius, correct?

    yep :)

    and spherical.

  • Maverick01/12/2009 at 21:48

The front wheels next year are just narrower, not smaller in radius, correct?

Slightly narrower - same width as the current wet tyres

  • me01/12/2009 at 21:48

Aren't they supposed to help? :-)

    the '09 cars? no.

  • Maverick01/12/2009 at 21:48

    and spherical.

    spherical??? interesting...

  • Bassano Clapper01/12/2009 at 21:49

Slightly narrower - same width as the current wet tyres

I didn't realise the wets were narrower

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 21:49

The front wheels next year are just narrower, not smaller in radius, correct?

They are narrower so that they have the same amount of rubber on the road as the grooved tyres did and teams won't need to move a lot of weight to the front of the car

  • me01/12/2009 at 21:49

    spherical??? interesting...

don't worry, was intended for steven.

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 21:50

Aren't they supposed to help? :-)

Not with cars that are set up for wider tyres and not in slow corners

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 21:50

    spherical??? interesting...

Ant said in commentary that his tyres were spherical

  • Maverick01/12/2009 at 21:50

I didn't realise the wets were narrower

conclusion: they won't look narrower then

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 21:51

conclusion: they won't look narrower then

They will if you see them side by side with the current tyres.

  • Maverick01/12/2009 at 21:52

Not with cars that are set up for wider tyres and not in slow corners

Surely, they've remembered to move the ballast back?

Anyway, 2 seconds down on March testing on the back of a year of upgrades isn't explained by front tyres alone

  • me01/12/2009 at 21:53

Surely, they've remembered to move the ballast back?

Anyway, 2 seconds down on March testing on the back of a year of upgrades isn't explained by front tyres alone

    true.

  • me01/12/2009 at 21:53

Surely, they've remembered to move the ballast back?

Anyway, 2 seconds down on March testing on the back of a year of upgrades isn't explained by front tyres alone

what about, filthy track, not used by f1 since march?

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 21:54

Surely, they've remembered to move the ballast back?

I think they will need to change suspension laygeometry as well as the centre of the wheel will be further from the centre line of the car as the outside edge of the wheel will be in the same place.

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 21:55

what about, filthy track, not used by f1 since march?

Depends what the conditions were like in March

  • Maverick01/12/2009 at 21:57

what about, filthy track, not used by f1 since march?

you could say that was true in march too

it's possible, I suppose, that the teams have been running overweight to simulate full fuel loads

  • Bassano Clapper01/12/2009 at 21:58

you could say that was true in march too

No? I'm listening to one right now. Problem is many of them are over an hour long... If only everyone was as considerate as Mr C!

  • Pat W01/12/2009 at 23:09

I'm assuming Alison and Christine listen to fairly short podcasts to get that many?

A lot of mine are 90 minutes or more.

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:09

No? I'm listening to one right now. Problem is many of them are over an hour long... If only everyone was as considerate as Mr C!

    you need rules.

    > 60mins = trash

  • Pat W01/12/2009 at 23:10

    > 60mins = trash

disagree, some are really good, they just need to release edited versions

  • RG01/12/2009 at 23:10

    > 60mins = trash

I listen to Danny Baker show which is two parts of 50 minutes, does that count?

  • Alison01/12/2009 at 23:10

I'm assuming Alison and Christine listen to fairly short podcasts to get that many?

A lot of mine are 90 minutes or more.

I go through phases of liking different things. I'm gonna go through and delete some stuff I'm never going to listen to though so it's manageable.

No-one wants a current affairs programme from August. I should just bin it.

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:11

    > 60mins = trash

disagree, some are really good, they just need to release edited versions

    so you agree then :)

  • Pat W01/12/2009 at 23:11

No-one wants a current affairs programme from August. I should just bin it.

depends if it is an interesting discussion.

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:11

    umm...

  • Pat W01/12/2009 at 23:11

I wouldn't say they are trash..

  • lou01/12/2009 at 23:12

    > 60mins = trash

but there are some spc which are over an hour.. and they are equally great!

  • Alison01/12/2009 at 23:12

depends if it is an interesting discussion.

If I listen to it though, I'm just getting more backlogged. They release faster than I can listen to them evidently or I wouldn't be in this pickle!!

  • Lukeh01/12/2009 at 23:12

    > 60mins = trash

I can't listen to anything longer than 60 minutes, I find 40-50 minutes perfect length foer podcasts. Although I'm never excellent at long listening sometimes... :(

Shine on you Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd managed to keep me interested for 20 odd minutes though :P That is probably the longest song on my iTunes. Although that obviously has no correlation to podcasts.

I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make. I think it is that pink Floyd should rule podcast lengths. Yes, that's definitely it.

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:12

I wouldn't say they are trash..

sorry, that wasn't what i meant. i'll stop writing in code...

greater than 60 mins means it goes into the trash (recycle bin on windows).

  • Lukeh01/12/2009 at 23:13

I can't listen to anything longer than 60 minutes, I find 40-50 minutes perfect length foer podcasts. Although I'm never excellent at long listening sometimes... :(

Bah, I mean, I can listen to them but I prefer less than 60 mins too.

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:13

fair enough. you gotta draw the line somewhere though.

  • RG01/12/2009 at 23:13

Anyways, to catch up on podcasts I'm sacrificing sleep, so erm, podcast all? erm, I'll stick with night all. lotsa love.

If I need a break I take a break. You don't have to listen in one hit.

  • Pat W01/12/2009 at 23:14

    ah ok :-)

  • RG01/12/2009 at 23:14

fair enough. you gotta draw the line somewhere though.

I tend to listen to shows in 30-40 minute chunks either because,

    a) i get bored listening for longer

    b) thats how long it usually takes me to fall asleep

Some I can listen all the way through (ie FT, Spc etc)

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:14

i get you're point :) i prefer podcasts that range from 30 - 60 mins.. anything between that is a nice length i feel. 70-80 mins i can handle on the odd occasion, but i could never subscribe to podcasts that were consistently over an hour long.. i'd never find time to listen to them.

  • Lukeh01/12/2009 at 23:15

If I need a break I take a break. You don't have to listen in one hit.

If Ipause it somewhere, and then come back a few days later, I have to start again. I can;t explain why, it's just how my mind likes it.

If Ipause it somewhere, and then come back a few days later, I have to start again. I can;t explain why, it's just how my mind likes it.

If I started again I'd end up annoyed at hearing the same thing again to get to the place I left off. If I leave it a day I jump to 5 mins or so before i stopped, to pick up the thread. I do try and listen on the same day, just with a break if needed.

  • Alison01/12/2009 at 23:18

Some podcasts I always listen to though wheras I have others that I catch up on in a big binge. I'm sorry to say that some SPC episodes have been set aside :( Mainly digests which tbh aren't that long....

If I watched the live show, the edit might not get an airing either due to lack of time. I need to burn another disk to make the most of commuting time.

meta is written in title case?

  • Jon Waldock01/12/2009 at 23:32

oooh theyrre a sports company of some sort.

    anywho, thats why

  • Jon Waldock01/12/2009 at 23:32

meta is written in title case?

    ?

  • Steven Roy01/12/2009 at 23:32

was msc really the first german wdc?

    Yes.

The only other German who got near a championship was von Trips in 1961 but he got killed in an accident with Jim Clark at Monza so his team mate Phil Hill overtook his points total and took the championship

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:33

meta is written in title case?

    ?

as in Meta not META. so why the fuss?

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:33

it doesn't explain anything? it makes the concept seem more silly.

  • Jon Waldock01/12/2009 at 23:33

as in Meta not META. so why the fuss?

oh i dont know what they care about it being META not meta, or if they even do. but thats why they want it to be Campos Meta not Campos

we know they do. joe got a telling off.

  • Pat W01/12/2009 at 23:34

they are also the commercial arm of the partnership, so that Campos doesn't need a commercial dept

i thought he got a telling off for it being Campos not Campos meta

    im confused. please explain

    you said:

"i have some Campos META news which explains the reason they are so picky about dropping the META"

but your news serves to cause more confusion not less. as even their own sponsor prefers "Meta".

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:35

i thought he got a telling off for it being Campos not Campos meta

    no.

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:35

i thought he got a telling off for it being Campos not Campos meta

    no.

unless we completely misread the quote?

  • Jon Waldock01/12/2009 at 23:36

    no.

oh ok. well then i dont know why its meta not META or whatever.

but thats why meta is there

  • me01/12/2009 at 23:37

oh ok. well then i dont know why its meta not META or whatever.

but thats why meta is there

it's possible i misunderstood, but the campos website specifically has it in uppercase. which just looks weird.

  • Lukeh01/12/2009 at 23:37

oh ok. well then i dont know why its meta not META or whatever.

Maybe it was a typo and they're being sponsored by MEAT or TEAM.

    I dont get it :(

their website used to title the team:

    campos META

so we've been shouting the meta most of the year. if the clarification was just that meta should be appended, not that it should be in uppercase, it's not a lot of fun.
