Wow, what a race! I think I need to watch it again and count all the passes, just to figure out what happened. Alternatively, I need to build a Formula 1 cave with screens and wifi...a bit like the one the stewards have. Of course, the big news was Senna being back in the car. I was overjoyed for him – while simultaneously feeling really rotten for Heidfeld – but Bruno could barely keep the grin off his face in his post-race interview with the Beeb despite having a rather bad afternoon thanks to his first-corner accident. I look forward to a good dissection of the race in the comments, but in the meantime shall we have some other links?

I found a collection of truly seminal talks about happiness.

It's probably a good thing that we now know how to stay happy in spite of adverse circumstances. Well, it will be for physicists, because it would appear that the Higgs boson may not exist at all.

Alternatively, being able to stay happy will be good for the Americans. They put in most of the money to put the space station in orbit, but have had their funding cut. Now the Russians want to scrap it within a decade.

While the space junkies are running out of money, the zoologists are doing quite well. So well, in fact, that they're crowd-sourcing ants for a project, just in case you felt like collecting some wingless hymenopts.

While we're on the subject of insects, the cottony cushion scale – an agricultural pest – has worked out a way to reproduce without males. This goes against the theory of evolutionary advantage in this documentary.

Returning from our little sojourn into biology, not all physicists have been having a frustrating time. Some caught a black hole burping its most recent starry meal.

Have you ever wondered why the sun is cooler than a nuclear reactor? I found a cartoon to explain it. I also found a recording of the sound of hydrogen.

While that's playing its spooky sound, let me end off with a secret – not my own, of course; one from Postsecret. It's the highlight of my Sundays to read other people's secrets, but it makes me especially happy when people respond to secrets. So here it is: A Secret. A response.

Have a great week everyone!

"I need to build a Formula 1 cave with screens and wifi...a bit like the one the stewards have."

i think we have one of those. thing is, half the passes weren't televised. no-one saw them. race direction was better than it has been but we need a "backmarker feed".

Oh no, I would need the FOM feed that the TV director gets. Then I'd be able to cut together a "backmarker feed" and a "Brazilian Mafia" feed, just to keep everyone entertained :)

I fell asleep before the Indycar race started earlier so I only saw the last20 laps. I then switched off the post race show immediately they said Helio Castroneves had cue cards with all his sponsors names on them to make sure he missed none of them. As a result of his stunt I chose to miss all their names. If anyone else ever does that in any race anywhere ever again I will switch off regardless how much interest I have in the show. I am not going to spend time watching someone read a list of sponsors

After all the hype about making a big bang in Switzerland the Higgs boson may not exist. Every time I see that name I think of the naval Bosun and have pictures in my head of little sailors inside atoms. I guess whatever really does exist there have to be particles with some of the properties of the Higgs.

The ISS originally was not intended to last to 2020.

I have never heard of the cottony cushion scale. Amazing what I learn here. We all know the problems caused by in-breeding within restricted groups so this new method sounds like it should only last a few generations.

I have never heard of quantum tunneling either but it makes so much sense. I always thought it was just the sun's gravity that caused the reaction to start. I have subscribed to that youtube channel. One minute physics is a great concept.

I thought that she had won a trip for her, and that I would be able to save money by sharing accommodation, but still have to pay airfare etc.

To find out that I'll just need spending money and airfare to Melbourne from Sydney has blown my mind

Just spotted this tweet from Adie.

In the garden looking at #Jupiter through the 'scope. Looking Bloody lovely tonight. Both bands razor sharp. @VirtualAstro

There is no moon in the sky so Jupiter is the brightest thing in the sky. It is between east and south east from the UK. Even with binoculars you can see that it is not uniform although you can't see any detail

It is the Montreal NHL's team nickname. It would be nice to see them throttling Boston, during the Stanley Cup playofffs, but I am afraid the prices would be too expensive. They need to avenge themselves for th at humilation last year.

my issue is the first thing a user sees is a choice of streams. don't give a user that choice, pick the best one and give me that. i also have no use for IRC which takes up another half a page.

That is on live.twit.tv rather than twit.tv The choice has come in handy occasionally when I have had bandwidth issues but it does look messy.

I have never heard of quantum tunneling either but it makes so much sense. I always thought it was just the sun's gravity that caused the reaction to start.

Actually, it's kind of half and half... (#warning: simplified physics below ;-) )

To maintain a self-sustained fusion reaction you need nuclei to get really close at a really high collision rate. If they don't get close enough, they won't fuse. And if the collision rate isn't high enough, the energy will dissipate faster than it's produced (the reaction stops).

The enormous mass of the sun (or any star) produces two things at its core: massive pressure and very high temperatures. The former implies that density (the number of atoms per cubic centimetre) is big and with so many nuclei together you have a very high collision rate. The later implies that those nuclei have very high speeds (the higher the temperature, the faster the atoms in a gas move), so in a direct collision there is a good chance for the nuclei to get close enough to fuse. The result: the sun is a permanent fusion reactor that keeps all of us alive.

An important thing is that you can trade collision rate for "closeness". If you lower the temperature (less nuclei get close enough to fuse) but you increase the density (hence, the collision rate), the effects cancel out and the system can still sustain the fusion. Here on earth we can't even dream to produce the densities you find at the centre of the sun, so we have to live up with increasing the temperature to compensate and produce a self-sustained fusion reaction (and, so far, we've failed at that). In an experimental fusion reactor the gas needs to be heated up to almost 100 million degrees, compared to the mere 15 million at the centre of the sun (and that's just to start it, not to make it work)

The devil, obviously, is in the details. It turns out that if you calculate classically (no quantum mechanics) the temperature needed to put two nuclei close enough to fuse, it's way higher than those used either here or in the sun. One of the reasons for that is quantum tunnelling, but it applies both to our reactors and to the sun. So, while it's true that quantum tunnelling is important for the sun to work, it's also important for man-made reactors. The real main difference between the two is the density of the gas.

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - Which race did Keke Rosberg win, on this day, the only win of the year that saw him crowned F1 World Champion?

Some are saying because it was the ONLY story that it was overhyped. There was 24 hour coverage and people freaking out for days. It was very intense. I guess people are angry that it wasn't as bad as feared in some areas (NYC downtown from what I can gather). Some areas are worse (New England, VT, CT), 12 people have died. I feel they're selfish and not realizing how others are suffering. Expand your view and be glad, I say to those who didn't have a huge deal at their place.

Yeah, I don't know what that farmer is going to do. His place is totally flooded beyond all flooding.

Rivers are still rising, so it won't calm down for a few days.

    Yes it was terrible.

I see DRR have decided to ignore the Pantano penalty completely.

    http://www.tweetdeck.com/twitter/DRRIndyCar/~S3dGI

"We know that we were penalized, but we are just considering that as hot air. On the re-start the League put the lapped No. 18 car in front us randomly with no explanation as to why they did that. As a result we had to battle between lapped cars. Whatever they say we are not going to acknowledge it."

Goodwood was positive, and Pippa Mann on Radio 2 last week was positive. Precious little else out there.

The next one to hit will be the lack of a Lotus engine, because KV Racing who race in Lotus colours have decided to sign with Chevy.

Oh and the Las Vegas $5m bonus prize for a non-IndyCar driver to come in? Nobody has signed up yet.

Like I was saying after Loudon, IndyCar currently resembles F1, circa '07-'09, when the racing became secondary to the political nonsense between the series, race control and the teams.

You're absolutely right - the series now appears to be broken in a bad way.

What do you link of all these internet papers that take links from allsorts, I guess they do credit the work though

i like them. it's good to see what people mashup sidepodcast with. some results are really surprising.

it's a bit odd claiming that people are "publishing" their own newspaper, "aggregating" might be a better term, but semantics aside, they're good.

    for example: 'Paper.li - Be a publisher' - http://paper.li/

Le Mans confirmed for 16 July 2012, and should not clash with the Canadian GP. Potentially opens the chance for someone like Brundle to have a go, I know there was speculation he'd hook up with his son and DC or Blundell.

I think in a choice between Hockenheim and Le Mans, Le Mans would win, especially if F1 races becomes bloody hard to watch.

I'd like to do Le Mans one year but I think my ignorance wouldn't allow me to get the most from it just yet. I've only partially watched it two races.nnot sure I have the attention span too.

Definitely on the to do list though

  • Bridget29/08/2011 at 21:41

After all the hype about making a big bang in Switzerland the Higgs boson may not exist...I guess whatever really does exist there have to be particles with some of the properties of the Higgs.

I remember being terrified that we'd be blown into the great beyond when they ripped our universe apart at the seams. In the words of a scientist far more learned than I, http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20838-dont-panic-about-the-missing-higgs--for-now.html

The ISS originally was not intended to last to 2020.

That may be, but they've committed to it now. Surely they can't just crash it?! (Sorry, this is the voice of my inner child, who found the whole concept exciting beyond description.)

We all know the problems caused by in-breeding within restricted groups so this new method sounds like it should only last a few generations.

That was my objection too. There might be a way to make it work, but I haven't had time to sit down with a genetic ecologist and talk it over. Besides, who would get rid of spiders if they did away with men? ;)

I have never heard of quantum tunneling either but it makes so much sense. I always thought it was just the sun's gravity that caused the reaction to start. I have subscribed to that youtube channel. One minute physics is a great concept.

Neither had I until I clicked on the link about the sound of hydrogen (there are some links that all geeks must click). I think One Minute Physics is done by the same guy who does cartoons for math nerds (if you're on twitter and can read a graph, this one's for you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51AhdTj-irQ&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_309414)

Sidepocasthabitant. Habitants are the old settlers of the Province of Quebec,. but the basic idea is to have a real vacation around Montreal with the highlight being the Grand Prix in 2013..

As long as it doesn't interfere with saving for paddock passes for my dad's 60th (he's awesome; he loves F1; he's totally cool enough to have a pair of paddock club tickets to Monaco bought for him), I'm there like a bear!

(I hope that turned out to be barely intelligible...)

Thank you! I was hoping someone could explain it in (a bit) more detail!

In other news, if someone misses their flight and cycles home from Amsterdam to Paris, is the correct response to admire the stamina, initiative and originality, or to judge for not being organised enough to get to the airport?

  • Rubbergoat29/08/2011 at 21:46

A week before the provisional date for the German GP. Back-to-back SidepodRaces! [gulp]

I am afraid I can only do one, and if my family want to go to le mans then I would be mad not to go. The whole weeks costs of camper van, camping place, fuel, food, drinks and tickets to le mans cost about as much as just the tickets for the f1.

  • Rubbergoat29/08/2011 at 21:50

I'd like to do Le Mans one year but I think my ignorance wouldn't allow me to get the most from it just yet. I've only partially watched it two races.nnot sure I have the attention span too.

The atmosphere is brilliant. Much better than spa. It's more like a rock festival and it's a lot more relaxed, because the race lasts 24 hours there's no rush to see anything.

Where else would you see ferraris parked next to tents, all night parties with burnouts and fireworks, cheap food and beer, big screens everywhere around the track and the freedom to pick a spot and stay there? There were so many good places for photos too. It's a Mecca for car lovers and it just has something other races doesn't have...

Don't worry about ignorance, the commmentators will fill you in and youll have your own favourites by the end.

  • Rubbergoat29/08/2011 at 21:51

I think in a choice between Hockenheim and Le Mans, Le Mans would win, especially if F1 races becomes bloody hard to watch.

If I go to le mans I'd love to meet some of you there. Honestly you won't regret it, even if you think you don't know much about it. You don't need to know about it. The race tells it's own story and you can't help but become a part of it.

  • Rubbergoat29/08/2011 at 21:52

The atmosphere is brilliant. Much better than spa. It's more like a rock festival and it's a lot more relaxed, because the race lasts 24 hours there's no rush to see anything.

Oh I forgot. They have a driver parade through the town where you get to meet and shake hands with the drivers!

  • Steven Roy29/08/2011 at 22:00

That may be, but they've committed to it now. Surely they can't just crash it?! (Sorry, this is the voice of my inner child, who found the whole concept exciting beyond description.)

They really have no option other than crash it when its time is up. The only alternative would be to send dozen of shuttle missions to dismantle the whole thing. 2020 is a long way away so don't be surprised if there is another extension.

You have to treat the end of the ISS like the end of the shuttles. Sad that it is over but excited for whatever comes next. By 2020 there are going to be unbelievably exciting things happening is space that we can't imagine yet.

  • Bassano29/08/2011 at 22:02

Can it not just stay in orbit? Does it require power to remain? Large space debris though

  • Steven Roy29/08/2011 at 22:03

Group 4 security used to be a national joke because of a stream of incidents caused by unbelievable incompetence. Since then they bought Securicor and changed their name to G4S. It looks though like nothing has changed as they just fired two people for putting a curfew tag on a false leg

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/pair-sacked-putting-tag-false-leg-105209719.html

  • Steven Roy29/08/2011 at 22:07

Can it not just stay in orbit? Does it require power to remain? Large space debris though

It needs fuel to constantly boost the orbit and then it would need the engines serviced regularly. Orbits of anything that close to the Earth are constantly decaying. So there are 3 options.

Permanently monitor and control its orbit.

Which means servicing missions and hoping it maintains structural integrity

    Deliberately crashing it

    Which can be controlled

    Letting it crash itself

    Which is incredibly dangerous

  • Leigh O'Gorman29/08/2011 at 22:07

  • Leigh O'Gorman29/08/2011 at 22:18

Does anyone here have a magic wand per chance?

  • Steven Roy29/08/2011 at 22:18

I'm still making a sad-face. That said, when I was seven, I thought by the time I reached my current age, I'd be the medical officer on the Mars station (I am now neither a doctor nor an astronaut).

Lots of us thought we would work in space but now that private space firms are getting close to launching real missions and a manned mission to Mars is an option it should not be too much longer before many people can work in space.

I blame JFK for the delay. Had he not set such tight targets for the moon mission then some of the more ambitious moon projects would have happened in the late 70s But because so much money was spent getting to the moon quickly and the missions all looked similar people lost interest and funding was cut. Had they planned a couple of flags and footsteps missions followed with a couple of rover missions they could then have started setting up the planned moon base longer term missions

  • Steven Roy29/08/2011 at 22:19

We could make it our own Rama :)

  • Steven Roy29/08/2011 at 22:21

Hehe. It's suspected that amino-acids arrived on a meteor, so they wouldn't be *too* far wide of the mark ;)

They have already found all sorts of amino acids and the like on meteorites. There are people in the Antarctic meteorite hunting and comparing what they find on meteorites with what they find in the the same area on the ground and it is clear that the meteorites have thousands of times the concentration of amino acids

  • Bridget29/08/2011 at 22:25

Does anyone here have a magic wand per chance?

Unfortunately it's broken and will only do shape-shifting spells. If you can handle that, you're welcome to borrow it ;)

Lots of us thought we would work in space but now that private space firms are getting close to launching real missions and a manned mission to Mars is an option it should not be too much longer before many people can work in space.

Ooh! I'd better get working on my [censored for copyright reasons] design then! It'll be useful when people need to spend extended periods of time in space :)

I wasn't alive then, but wasn't that period in history an extended session of Russia and the US showing who were bigger men? Ambition and unreachable goals were the name of the game.

Exactly and the Soviet Union had launched a satellite first and put a man in space first so there was no way Kennedy was going to let them plant their flag on the moon first.

I should sleep or I won't be able to get through work tomorrow. Night everyone!

    Good night

  • Steven Roy29/08/2011 at 22:36

Still comes down to The Russians, or their contemporary equivalent

    Yes and no.

The money spent on the military is due to America's interpretation of the threat posed by the Soviet Union rather than the actual threat. It's a subtle difference but a costly one. This is getting dangerously near to politics though

I am weeping that Melbourne to London cost me $1800 last time and the cheapest I can find for this trip is like $2800 with airlines that don't really appeal and $3000 with those that do :(

I'm paying off several things, and basic bills are rising too. Potentially might disallow myself from doing anything until the credit card is clear.. after Silverstone in a couple of weeks :)

holy crap. NY to London was around $1200, anything under $1000 is a bargain. NY to Stockholm was the most expensive. If we just reallllly wanna go, can't they give us a discount?

SPC could be sponsored by an airline. I'd be good with that, and the airline would, too.

it now has a way to tag your friends in the post, put a location, and select who you share with right into the box. in the profile, you can also edit directly who you share with each part of it, instead of looking through the privacy setting (similar to google+)

con: the actual process of selecting the audience is still the same non-intuitive used before (if you want to make custom combinations).

pro: you can change the audience of old posts (I'd expect google+ to copy that soon...)

Indeed so. While it's good that they're pushing each other to innovate, I do think that the more they become clones, the more likely it becomes that one will die (or suffer very badly) at the expense of the other.

I honestly thought people would've gotten over it by now. Guess not.

If a change will happen, I think we'll see something very similar to the arrangement in Germany, along with a blast to the past. All quali and races (except maybe Australia, Malaysia, and Japan) will be live, but all they will do is show those, and that's it (just like in the final few years of the original BBC coverage). All other pre- and post-session buildup (as well as the special goodies like the onboared fee) will be on Sky, just like it is in Germany. It would probably also mean that it would make more sense for the F1 team to have their contracts with Sky, with BBC paying a fee to Sky for commentary.

I didn't realise the cost of production on pre/post shows was the real killer. I was under the impression that it was the fee for the rights?

  • Alison30/08/2011 at 08:30

I honestly thought people would've gotten over it by now. Guess not.

Really?? I could never afford a sky subscription. What are people supposed to do about it if they still want to watch?

I didn't realise the cost of production on pre/post shows was the real killer. I was under the impression that it was the fee for the rights?

Nah, it's still showing the race live that's more expensive. But if they can't stop the fans from complaining, they will need to at least consider doing cuts elsewhere. If they can't cut the race itself, then cut everything else around it.

If a similar model can work in Germany (albeit with ads), surely it's feasible for it to work in Britain?

  • Journeyer30/08/2011 at 08:32

I mean, people usually get tired of complaining and just do something more drastic - in this case, dropping F1 entirely. I'm (pleasantly) surprised that they are still mobbing each and every post.

I wouldn't be very bothered if the coverage was scaled back hugely. The session with commentary is the important bit surely alongside iplayer access if you miss it live.

The production can't be more than the tens of millions they had to pay for rights though. Even though they do spend a lot on production which could easily be cut back.

Then they'll cut somewhere else. It happened with 6Music, why not F1?

Again, this proves why a change of heart is by no means a certainty. But given the... rabid response, they do need to show that there is no other choice.

oh, the BBC F1 talk is still on :-) I still do not understand why BBC did not manage to sell their coverage to other English speaking territories ... they have the best coverage around that could have made them some money towards the production cost etc ... well, maybe they tried but there were no buyers

  • Journeyer30/08/2011 at 08:47

why not ? there are stations taking over their commentary so why would not they be able to offer the whole show ?

it could be part of their contract with FOM, not to sell the others, as those would need to be taken care of by host broadcasters. wouldn't know for sure, though.

  • Leigh O'Gorman30/08/2011 at 08:48

    Hi Marti,

I'm good - how are you?

  • Journeyer30/08/2011 at 08:48

BBC4? Why not BBC3? BBC4 is a lot better, IMO.

I still think they'd be much better off merging the two.

Ah, there's a good idea. :) Maybe that is what they'd do if they axe BBC4?

  • Alison30/08/2011 at 08:48

I still think they'd be much better off merging the two.

    That would go well together....

  • Journeyer30/08/2011 at 08:48

    How are you all?

Very good, thank you. And you?

  • Marti30/08/2011 at 08:49

Fine, visiting SPC website after some weeks off. I see it has changed a bit.

This is the problem with the BBC at the minute. There has been zero indication as to what would happen with BBC 4's programming should they close it. They have simply let the situation boil up with answering any questions or criticisms

  • Leigh O'Gorman30/08/2011 at 08:50

I see it has changed a bit.

    It has?

  • RubberGoat30/08/2011 at 08:50

I think people want the truth, first of all. And no one feels they're getting that. So you're saying Benson isn't the type to pity the fans, anyway?

He doesn't care about the fans at all. He only cares about how good the product looks because it makes him look good

  • F1Wolf30/08/2011 at 08:50

maybe they're not allowed to sell it? they do sell commentary, though.

I would be surprised if there was a clause not allowing them to sell the program. why not ? of course they could only offer it those who bought the F1 broadcasting rights

I know that every sport is different but we here often have the complete coverage taken from Sky for example, including the pundits and half time debates (football for example) ...

  • Alison30/08/2011 at 08:50

This is the problem with the BBC at the minute. There has been zero indication as to what would happen with BBC 4's programming should they close it. They have simply let the situation boil up with answering any questions or criticisms

Some of it does certainly seem very niche though. I'm not sure all of it deserves to be kept. It may well be high brow but that doesn't give it intrinsic value.

Making BBC4 fans angry, and rightly so.

The BBC's hands are always tied because they try to please everyone.

Without answering, you mean. They took the same attitude with F1, as well. It seems something is seriously wrong with BBC management for them to either condone or promote this behavior.

Well, they are a public broadcaster. It is good what they do on BBC 4.

Ah, yes, the difficulties of a license fee.

But at the same time, it's that same license fee that makes them the best state-owned network in the world, bar none. Without it, they would need to please the advertisers instead. And that's never a good thing.

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - Who was on pole position for the Belgian GP, on this day in 1998, but retired in the enormous first lap crash?

  • Marti30/08/2011 at 09:01

    - Who was on pole position for the Belgian GP, on this day in 1998, but retired in the enormous first lap crash?

    Mika Hakkinen? :)

  • Amy30/08/2011 at 09:01

Ah, wouldn't know if that is the case.

it's a question that used to come up a lot in the channel ten forums, blahblahlah you have the commentary, why not show the grid walk, blahblahblah. The answer was always that they weren't allowed BBC footage.

  • Journeyer30/08/2011 at 09:02

Some of it does certainly seem very niche though. I'm not sure all of it deserves to be kept. It may well be high brow but that doesn't give it intrinsic value.

Some people do seem to argue that no content can be criticised on BBC 4 because it is for somebody, but that's obviously incorrect. However there is a lot of high quality niche programming on BBC 4, and I would argue that looking after niche programming on BBC 4 is closer to the BBC charter than showing F1 is - but what do I know :)

Some people point out Sky Arts to say that commecial tv can rival the BBC but it's quite different programming for a different audience.

yeah she wasn't sure if she could change the start date of her new job and I was getting paranoid because I had to give Air Asia my +1s details before they got the paddock passes made up.

Theres also some band playing here that she wants to see so at least she won't miss them :)

Wow, you're very lucky. May you buy a lottery ticket for me?

Not much you can do then. At least it's not what happened to me, where a ticket was offered for something, I said I was keen but had to check with Mrs. Goat, but when I got back to them a half hour later the ticket was given to someone else.

Still, I'm glad I didn't go - it was for an outdoor play and it rained cats and dogs that night!

She'd understand if I put it into Muse terms. "Imagine it was tickets to a Muse show...and I took someone who doesn't like Muse...wouldn't that be a waste?" :D

  • Alex Andronov30/08/2011 at 10:15

    Vis a vis??

you haven't heard this one? You are lucky...

vis a vis (sort of pronounce vis a vee because we don't write the accents) really means in relation to (in frence it means face to face, but in Enlgish it means "with regard to" as in you are able to see the other issue when you sit face to face).

Lots of people, like to use this in business but it often gets confused with "vice versa" which is "the reverse of the previous statement". Which you can sort of see why because of a mirror image also looking like face to face.

So people now seem to use Vis a vis as a poncy way of saying, "on the other hand", it's a living nightmare.

  • Journeyer30/08/2011 at 10:16
