Hello, welcome, it's another day. We are almost at the end of August. How has that happened?
- We've just enjoyed the return of F1 after the summer break, with a mixed up race in Spa. Have you found time to Rate the Race yet? You can score it out of ten and pick your driver of the day. There's lots of discussion in there, including pondering how the DRS worked out. Also make sure you view Tony's race position chart - it is a great way of visualising the movement in the race.
- RG has written up a "new" team championship update. Who would have thought Jarno Trulli would be leading?
- As a Pastor fan, Lou (not JB über-fan Lou) has written her thoughts about the Pastor Maldonado and Lewis Hamilton incident. Good to see things from all points of view.
That'll do for now. Oh, don't forget it's Christine's Rankings day today so if you've seen anything pointsworthy over the last seven days, do highlight it in the comments or Twitter. Lou (JB über-fan) made a new hashtag which I definitely approve of.
@mrschristine major points for mclaren this week in #christinesrankings for letting fans HOLD the Spa trophy? - http://t.co/M9UbQph
Share your finds and I will dispense judgement as I see fit!
Hello almost end of August. Most importantly, hello end of winter!
#sorryotherhemisphere
Good golly, it's Tuesday
All day too!
Hooray !!!!
:D
Hehehehee...
Williams Press Release:
Q: Pastor came together with Lewis Hamilton in qualifying. What was your reaction to his five-place grid penalty?
"Sam Michael: I understand the penalty applied by the stewards of the meeting and respect it."
Translation
"Pastor was an idiot and got what he deserved"
:D
Hi again!
What has happened to the world?
I manage a spanish f1 twitter account which has 18000 followers, 19% of them from Venezuela.
They wanted to kill Hamilton! They are very angry with him, same as some spanish fans.
DING DING! :D
Yeah. Too much "us vs. them" in F1 fandom these days.
Yikes
Absolutely
It goes with the territory of being one of the best. Think about it: every title-winning driver since Alan Jones has been hated in some shape or form. The biggest examples are Prost, Senna, Schumacher, Alonso, and Hamilton. As for Vettel, people don't hate him so much as dislike him for the finger.
Aye - Hill and Villeneuve rarely polarised folks enough to be hated. Very rarely heard heard hate for Mika.
Agree with you on Damon and Mika. Especially Mika.
Jacques... well, he got annoying after a while.
True, but only later on.
Post-1997. And Hill lost a bit of popularity around then too...
Absolutely
Karun Chandhok for giving a lift to @virtualstatesman even though he didn't know who he was #points

Adam C stirring the pot here:
"An ex-McLaren driver told me the team 'can't afford to keep Jenson because they pay Lewis so much.' Make of that what you will..."
Add to that the rumors that Jenson has talked to Ferrari, and you get a rather interesting mix.
So, Giedo van der Garde is currently 2nd in the GP2 Series. He has not won a race for 2 years. There's one round left in 2011...
No more race in Abu Dhabi?
Afternoon :)
I have enlisted my boss in the job hunt.
That's a non-Championship race, for mainly GP3 graduates and newer GP2 drivers this year.
Also, what are the odds that said ex-McLaren driver is Martin Brundle? Or it could also be David Coulthard - those two are joined at the hip anyway. :D
I hadn't heard that he was.
He says here that he's ready to sign with McLaren, they just have to ask him - http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/94139
And he says he wants to do Le Mans and World Championship triathlon after F1!
Which is why Adam C brought this up. If they wanted to keep Button, why haven't they signed him yet? Red Bull already signed Webber - and those two have a difficult relationship. McLaren should well know that the longer they don't sign Button, the more likely someone else will poach him, no matter how unlikely it is. They should know - they got him from Brawn, who was unable to sign him.
Adam also made a good point that his salary should go up in the option year, partly because of his good results.
Where BTW?
I'm really enjoying my day of sorting. Is it wrong to get a warm fuzzy feeling from organising things #sadperson :D
He's not going anywhere though, is he?

He shouldn't. But then, that's what we said when he was talking to Brawn.
I think he'd rather go to Butlin's than leave McLaren right now
True, but if the team can't pay for him...
Skegness beach..?
Just remembered now - remember when they asked Jenson about his McLaren deal at the end of 2009? He said it was actually lower than what Brawn/Mercedes were offering. I do find it odd that even with that lower figure, McLaren would struggle to pay for it.
Different circumstances though. I think we all knew Brawn was a one year phenomenon, McLaren are there every year...
I just visited there. My Grandad who lives there was very proud to tell me the news that Skeggy now has a blue flag beach...
Well, true, but I think the hesitance is now with the team, rather than the driver. If McLaren doesn't want to pay for him, he'll have to look elsewhere.
So he's just as well of there than say, going to Virgin...
There's a new post in my blog where I give my opinion about the Belgian GP drivers' performance.
Would you like to take a look? :)
http://martif1.com/2011/08/30/vencedores-y-vencidos-del-gp-de-belgica-el-kaiser-reina-de-nuevo/
Rubens Barrichello – Insuficiente!
I am a big fan of him, but his race was very bad :(
I just love the word ;)
#IndyCar
Am hearing interesting names to replace Danica at Andretti Autosport - top of the list is apparently... Dan Wheldon
Where did that pic of Alonso come from? What a moustache!
Believe me, when you take an exam in high school, or in the university, this is the last word you want to hear!
Its meaning is Fail.
Well, i don't know if 'fail' is the world.
It's when you take an exam an you do less of the 50% right ;)
Michael Schumacher – Excelente!
Scorchio!
Yeah, Kaiser is back :D
Yes that's fine. We might say unsatisfactory, insufficient. It's clear what you mean.
Massive success then :D
:D
Dannyca
DANICAR
Well he does have simply fabulous teeth
:D
Someone needs to make that logo!
Hehehe
I know someone did a logo for "Danistar" at one point. Can't remember who though.
How low can you go? As low as AUTOSPORT using a dead man to sell magazines.
http://twitter.com/#!/henryhopefrost/status/108547286417682432
Ouch. I know he works for them, but is HHF an official spokesman for Autosport though?
Some days I love twitter. Managed to get ripped into BT and Autosport in the same day.
And no I don't mean Heinz-Harald.
No idea. But it is up to them to deal with him now. Saying there is a tribute in the mag is fine but saying buy the mag to pay your respects is despicable
Absolutely.
Got to go now. Hopefully BT will have me reconnected soon now that they have decided I don't need to pay the zero pounds zero pence that was outsanding that caused them to cut off my phone
I'm very confused. My university have emailed me. Would you say "Faculty of Social and Human Science" is where you'd look for "Maths"
Ah fabulous. I've received bills threatening court action over an outstanding balance of £0 before. Computer says no.
Checktheirwebsite
holy cow.
i wonder who else we can pay our respects to, by purchasing haymarket tat?
it's the anniversary of diana's death tomorrow... copy of f1 racing anyone?
SOLD !! No wait. Sorry, I seem to have left my conscience in the pub - back in a minute.
Nick Heidfelds career.
:)
I'm afraid purchasing AUTOSPORT is the only way to show any respect.
autosport - a whole new meaning to "paying your respects".
i guess, £3.20 is cheap for a clear conscience.
Mr C,
Out of interest, are there any "Aside with..." coming soon?
:)
debrief recording tonight, not sure about aside.
Sweet. Actually, that reminds me...
Still time for voicemails?
if you're quick yup. recording in about an hour.
Sweet. Cheers.
I would if I weren't in work at the min. Maybe next time
:)

Christine's Rankings day today, all suggestions gratefully considered :)
one of my uni friends is in Baltimore for a few months studying over there.. and yep he's going to the Baltimore GP this weekend. I may be a tiny bit jealous.
never heard of it. what sort of racing?
http://baltimoregrandprix.com/
Kai's bff Dario is gonna be there and everything!!
Am jealous!
oh lord, indycar :)
IndyCar and ALMS
Game results ping - http://toomuchracing.com/2011/08/30/tmr-game-2011-week-32/
he says it's literally taken over. He said i'd love it. Am not a huge fan of indy car but it must have be such an amazing atmosphere! He's from manchester too, so his family got to enjoy the awesome JB display yesterday. lucky people.
if any type of racing series wants to come take over our town i'd happily let them :D
hehe. we were discussing yesterday. for the past 3 or 4 races, there's been nothing but complaints. my twitter stream is a river of indycar misery recently.
oh i don't think i've ever watched a full indy car race or anything. but a street race in my back yard is just about a dream come true. :D
Good to know the event is making waves locally, often they don't.
Oh poo, can you pretend that Mav forgot to post next week's pics before he went on holiday
yeah apparently the students woke up and were like 'wooaaahhhhh!' i'm not sure they know what it is. but i've informed him so at least he knows.
:)
I hate NASCAR I always suck on those weeks
nooo, montoya's in it.
(just don't bet on him)
I hope they go. ALMS might be the better event, particularly as the order at the flag has a better chance of being the official result :)
But yeah, Ferraris vs Porsches vs BMWs on a street course, can't go wrong.
hehe
i've told him if he doesn't go and take pictures for me i wont cook for him when he's back in the country.. :D
Both series are a bit weak at the moment though. ALMS for entry numbers, and IndyCar for officialdom.
In other ALMS news, their big races are still popular: Petit Le Mans had to trim 70 applicants to 60 entrants, and 'only' 53 will be allowed to start! http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/alms-petit-le-mans-capped-to-53-starters/
bring back pre-qualifying :)
People keep crashing..
Seems fair.
:)
Points for Rubens and Heikki for their finish on Sunday?
#christinesrankings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lgwOobQKAc
There was only 0.038 seconds between the two, I should add
If thats the case I want points for Kobi and Massa in Canada.....
wasn't that due to DRS?
It is a desperate plea!
It's all the same these days. #anythingforpoints.
Hehe, the commentary, it's that guy with the accent!
Mork wwWebborrr
Hello.
Just arrived after a 20km run with my bike, through roads and mountains.
Quite exhausted, to be honest, but I can't wait to go out again!
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/big-hugs-and-awkward-poses-on-christines-rankings-this-week
Well, it's time to leave.
Short and quite visit.
Good Sidepodnight, sidepodworld ;)
you ran with your bike? You know you're supposed to RIDE them ;)

Ooooh I just had a spooky Sidepodcast moment. As if this was wierd enough, the legendary moment of Ringo Starr's demise came up in a related videos list after watching f1 stuff...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65QrvxX-2Cg
...and it turns out it was uploaded two years ago today! *spooky music*
blimey!
He's a controller and he's fat; what's the problem?!
never gets old :D
Well, I mean, honestly.
It is a controversy that will never go away!
Like Postman Pat has a helicopter now. He shouldn't have a helicopter!
Postmen don't have helicopters!
Pardon?
Van. Always a post van.
End of!
I'm going through old Sidepodcast diaries. Can I say retro? *runs*
Eve the MD of RLM got stuck in as well on @radiolemans, RT'd Steven too.
@henryhopefrost 'Buy it on Thursday' I presume that the cover price is being donated to Martin Hines Young Driver fund is it?
@henryhopefrost Yes Henry. It was in bad taste and you know it. I expect more of you.
@henryhopefrost @lindsaymorle @rwestbrook1 It's not bitter and it's not sarcastic. Your comment was in very poor taste.however good the obit
@henryhopefrost You have plugged the mag on the back of an obit Henry...do you really not get it???
Don't know if it has been discussed but this is huge news. Gordon Murray is up there with Adrian Newey. He has a different approach but is of similar status. He has come up with many revolutionary designs. For example the MP4/4 that won 15/16 races in 1988 was a development of his Brabham BT55. This news makes a Renault drive a lot more appealing to a top driver.
http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/94138
He replied to me saying
@stevenroy27 Despicable? Some of Martin's family members don't think so... You make it sound like I work for the former NOTW.
So I have made it cleat that I think exactly that
Declan Brennan just retweeted the original
Seems that Henry's just given Autosport free publicity with this monumental non-thinking parade.
The thing is he would have got more publicity if he had said it was a Hines tribute issue because everyone would have retweeted it and people would have bought it. As it is there are tweets from other journalists attacking him personally for using an obit to plug a magazine
It's pretty disgusting behaviour.
He's always struck me as a bit of an idiot.
Evening all
Evening. How's things?
None too bad young sir - just finished watching last week's Doctor Who. Going to start my Belgium GP write soon
And you?
:)
By the way, has tomorrow's daily been done yet? If not, may I add a link?
:)
DW was a good'un for those who haven't seen it.
Been back about 12 hours from my holiday in the US with Emily. Didn't wanna go but a part of me is glad to be home.
Nice-I assume fun was had?
Oh yes, most definitely. I'm amazed how welcoming I was made to feel. They're all so friendly!
Oh dear, it gets worse... #IndyCar
Dennis Reinbold (Giorgio Pantano's team boss on Sunday) only found about the post-race penalty when it was announced on TV.
Seriously, what is going on over there?
http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-reinbold-still-fuming-over-pantanos-penalty
I didn't like it at all. Glad you had a good holiday though.
I thought the lady that played Mel was just awful, but the rest was good.
She reminded me of Martha, or that woman from Sugar Rush who's name escapes me.
That was all ridiculous. As if you can just shoehorn something in. Oh yes we just forgot to mention this person that's been here all along.... Honest guv.
Me thinks Giorgio has the right idea...
Correct. I think Indycar has this completely backwards - no blocking works on ovals but you absolutely CANNOT do that on road courses. It's part of the show - watch someone have to work to overtake, just don't hand it to them on a plate.
Sadly this has become part of the whole "if there's no passing, it must be boring" syndrome.
i'm sad. i liked him when we met him :(
the "culture of autosport" is the problem i guess. we know they'd all sell their own grandmothers if it made a profit. same thing that makes them run the headlines they do, or create a definitive motorsport rankings. anything for a sale.
If you want passing watch NASCAR. If you want action watch F1. If you wanna be clueless to the result watch Indycar.
For a second, I thought that said "anything for a cake"
Cake! Who wants? :)
no, that's sidepodcast.
;)
Yep. Greed. Sales patter.
I'm always adamant that there is a fundamental difference between "passing" and "overtaking". Apparently cars drifting mindlessly past with no possible recall counts for "action".
how can i get any worse?
oh!
Could hardly be more shameless.
Some companies do that to people though... A good friend of mine got himself a sales job and after a while he'd turned into a right **** trying to flog us all stuff we didn't want at every half opportunity.
That's kind of what I mean when I say 'idiot' in this case, not stupid, but.. shorthand for words I can't use :)
Could you ever imagine any other series where a team boss finds out about a penalty 20 minutes after the race from television?
I think F1 nearly had that problem a couple years ago, at least now they're communicative.
i don't really get the pantano thing, did he fall foul of the same rule that screwed over the race winner about 18 months ago? like, you can't defend your line.
it was a stupid rule back then, but if i know about it, pantano must do?
I said that the other day that IndyCar is reminding me of F1 toward the end of Mosley years.
I'm sure I've seen it before somewhere, not often though
Yep
Apparently, Pantano was never informed of it. He found out during the interview with Kevin Lee.
Yup, same rule. I cannot understand why they've kept that one in.
it is a rule though. how mad can he be that he didn't read the rule book?
Because according to him and TV he didn't break the rule.
Helio at Edmonton. Yes, same rule.
An Autosport.com Plus piece went up in the last hour or two and it makes out his whole career is riding on these two races he's doing, so you'd think he'd do some homework, or the team would tell him in the test he did the other week. Although now in that piece he's claiming he did it for braking stability.
that's the one.
Because the people who wrote the rules have never raced a single event in their entire careers.
He was drafted in fairly last minute to replace Wilson. In all fairness, I wouldn't expect that rule in any racing series, but this was drawn up for "safety reasons"
This kinda reminds me of Imola 2005 - Schumacher trying every which way to pass Alonso but not being able to. Clever positioning, yet with Indycar rules he woulda been through and winning.
Safety reasons, or "we don't want people to crash".
OK, so you don't want people to crash. Educate them on using their brakes properly for a start.
ah-ha. by tv, you mean the commentators? or you watched it and agree?
Commentators. I confess I've not seen the footage yet.
"Safety reasons" - emphasis on the inverted comma's.
It was news to me - I certainly never saw it on screen.
How do you know what the commentators said if you haven't seen it?
Reinbold (team boss) says Pantano never moved all the way across the 'imaginary line' on the track denoting blocking, it was a half-move.
FYI I never saw the Webber-Alonso move live. Speed sucks.
It was magic.
:D
best over take of the year.
Best one I've seen in a few years I think. Certainly beats Webber's slightly enthusiastic overtake on Kovalainen at Valencia last year.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SBATOPNSf4
i need to find some footage, but i think alo/ham did the same thing on lap 2 in 2007.
sounds like bourdais nails it - "we're not in europe".
Alonso-Schumacher, Suzuka 2005, 130R.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLZLxT1ZEPA
Thanks, I couldn't find that. Were they under green for that last lap?
Said with a very smug smile
#Grrrrrr...
Yep
Fixed.
heh. yeah, but that's not eau rouge.
Of course this wasn't the only call which was weird. Under the Safety Car, Race Control started moving cars around in the snake to put the lapped James Jakes behind the top five. Pantano was 6th and not lapped, so why wasn't Jakes put behind all of the lead lap cars, or just left where he was?
Pantano was moved too but I'm not sure where.
Also somehow the two leaders find themselves ahead of the SC for a short while, which is just bizarre.
In this clip the commentators don't mention ANY of this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aniPQs2bjE&feature=player_embedded
*facepalm* He's made his line though. He didn't change.
NASCAR doesn't have the rule, neither do the ALMS, or Grand-Am.
Doesn't matter. It's illegal to defend your position in IndyCar
Point. Most of the time overtakes at Eau Rouge end in crashes or tragedy. RIP Stefan Bellof.
...or anyone else. Good golly, go-karting doesn't even have this rule.
Anyway the team Twitter account @DRRIndyCar has been having a good old rant for the last couple of days, and good on 'em for not lying down.
Good. I like emotional teams. I did not like Ferrari's tweet about an "awful day for Ferrari" when they were 4th on the grid. Minus points in the teams ranking for that.
-2
http://sidepodcast.com/post/grumpiness-and-gorillas-on-this-weeks-team-rankings
Can I be honest and say that's not enough of a drop for them?
I mean, if they aren't happy with 4th, I'll be more than happy to see Sauber take that place.
I know what's done is done, that's just my personal feeling. I've liked Ferrari for a long time but that was just beautifully stupid.
Or Lotus?
When drivers, teams, fans and media are constantly blasting the series and IndyCar still don't listen, then things really are lost.
it didn't occur to them that they were fourth. they say alo - 8th and that was it.
I think Massa should be looking elsewhere already.
Oh never....
:D
I'll take 8th as well.
Hasn't Kobayashi had 5th on the grid this season?
He's finished 5th. Highest grid is 9th in Aus I think.
Hell, I'd take 8th on the grid and I'm not even a driver
Found this quote from Brundle about Koby's overtaking:
"He gets to the normal braking point and then goes, ‘Now, which one is the brake again? That’s right, it’s on the left,’ and he just sails past people!" http://www.brundlequotes.com/page2.htm
Sadly not everyone escaped from Spa in one piece. Poor guy always gets the wrong end of the stick there.
I'm sure Ferrari has a second driver, it's just that noone can remember his name!
Felipe-Baby?
Sorry no voicemail from me this week. Still no power or water.
if you can comment, you can make an MP3!! ;)
hehe! There is a very loud generator and it can only support this modem and laptop. I can't add the mic to it. Sorry. :)
Hai Kai :)
turns out Korea will be Jeremys first international trip. I feel honoured to be the one to introduce him to the joy that is the 9 hour stop over in a boring airport
9 hours?? Snore!
in the LCCT in KL no less! I love you Tony, but your airport can't entertain me for that long. Perhaps 4.5 hours in Starbucks and 4.5 hours in McDonalds :D
I have NO idea why Pamela didn't want to come :P
she did! Her boss just wouldn't let her :(
Haiya. :)
I did in and out because the King of Generator Land over there just turns it off randomly, so sorry I didn't respond earlier.
*dip in and out of the conversation
do we have a daily for Wed?
#lookingfurtherthanmynose fail :)
heh.
