Hello all, I hope this British bank holiday is treating you well so far! It’s finally the day we’ve all been waiting for, race day!! The F1 summer holidays are finally over and our favourite sport is back with somewhat of a bang. We’ve had birthdays, contract signings, little bit of politics, incidents, rain, and a few shock qualifying results, and we haven’t even had the race yet! If you’ve missed any of the race weekend action so far you can catch up with why Pastor got a penalty and Mark Webber’s news over at Christine’s fabulous F1 minute. Speaking of Christine’s wonderful work, if you missed Qualifying yesterday you can catch the highlights of the best coverage here.

We were treated to some great TV last night, Dr Who was back last night and wow what an episode! If you’ve seen it and haven’t yet caught Christine’s or Lukeh’s thoughts then please do. What.an.episode!

Reading festival is also on this weekend and as usual, here at Sidepodcast we’re embracing the festival, so please join us for live chatter tonight here.

Shall we get on with some arty and fun links for this glorious Sunday then?

• I’ve always wanted to visit Budapest and these photos just make me want to go there more.

• I’ve know some people like to play with their food, but this is taking that to a whole new level!

• Now that polaroid film as we know and love it is becoming much rarer how about turning a normal photograph into one using one very simple thing.

• I love these, some wonderful ‘brandversations’ for you all.

• Finally, if you saw a Super Mario Bros box hanging in the air in front of you, would you know what to do?

That’s about it for today. Have an amazing day, I hope all of you in the US that may have been/ may be affected by the hurricane are all safe and well. See you in the comments!

are you not having to leave?

  • Kai27/08/2011 at 23:49

are you not having to leave?

I don't have to. I'm not near water and they're evacuating only due to storm surges (predicted 4-8 feet). It'll be high winds for me 50-80mph. My concern is trees falling on my place. We'll lose power, but it's just for how long. Some say a week, but hopefully not that long.

    I want to see Spa!

And school is supposed to start Tuesday.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 23:50

    blimey!

  • Kai27/08/2011 at 23:52

    blimey!

They've already canceled our work day Monday, so we had to get everything done in 2, not 3 days, so that was a lot/stressful. We'll see when the roads get cleared from downed trees and power gets put on for the school, then we'll start.

  • Kai27/08/2011 at 23:56

Here's a story if people want to read. I don't want to harp on it, but they've never done a lot of the things they're doing to prepare for this storm and I've been through several hurricanes and blizzards here. I hope we're ready here in the States and it won't end up being as bad as predicted, but it is scary to be by myself in the woods surrounded by trees with high winds. I hope it'ok to talk about here. I've been staying on twitter mostly, out of consideration.

I like you, Tony. I really do. But he was in a McLaren - when a McLaren driver won the world championship.

He was never going to beat Lewis. I am sure Heikki is more confident and has improved since then. You don't need to be the greatest driver in the world to win a title in the right car.

I think Heikki is a lot better than people think

True to a certain extent. But the thing is, he wasn't even close to Lewis that year. Unlike, say, Massa in 2006, I didn't see anything in Heikki's performance that convinced me he had the potential to win a championship. I sure hope I'm wrong, though.

A few years ago someone asked me which drivers they should watch in the junior formulae who I thought would be successful in F1. I said Lewis and Heikki. So he owes me an improvement in his results.

I think he had been messed about at Renault and just didn't expect Lewis to be so good. I can see him being like Button. SPend a few years under the radar and pop up and get some surprising results

I'd want to be a storm chaser because it implies I'd have a choice about where it was relative to where I am. I'd love to have a choice about it. :)

Apparently IndyCar are about "90%" of the way the way to confirming a race in China next year.

You'd think they would concentrate on fixing problems at home first, but...

but what is the rest of the field like?

The top five or six are pretty decent if still a little inconsistent. With time, there's a few good'uns in there. Grosjean is a far, far better driver now than he was two years ago.

yes, but sometimes phone remains even when power is out.

I have to take today one minute and one challenge at a time. If I just stop communicating, then we know I can't get online and the power went out. :)

For now, the fact that I'm sitting here watching tv coverage, the sun is up so I can see a little outside and I'm in the comments is amazing.

McLaren and Red Bull are allowed to change front tyres - La Sexta

Wha?? Red Bull, Steven predicted correctly. But McLaren??

  • Kai28/08/2011 at 10:51

    A female godess?

yes, but sometimes phone remains even when power is out.

    But your router needs power

  • Journeyer28/08/2011 at 10:52

Wha?? Red Bull, Steven predicted correctly. But McLaren??

In any case, that may explain the 17 tyres. I'm guessing this means that everyone will have to be allowed to change front tyres anyway, not just RBR and McLaren.

  • Kai28/08/2011 at 10:53

    But your router needs power

yes, so I have no idea if I'll have access once the power goes out.

  • Alison28/08/2011 at 10:53

    But your router needs power

Strange sense of deja vu... You could get a really long cable and plug it into your computer instead?

  • Steven Roy28/08/2011 at 10:53

Pele is also the name of the goddess spirit of the Hawaiian islands.

Didn't know about her. I saw Pele (deity) and assumed it was the footballer. He was the undisputed best player in the world and possible the best ever

  • James28/08/2011 at 10:54

Wha?? Red Bull, Steven predicted correctly. But McLaren??

From la Sexta (copied off autosport forums ;))

    - McLaren and Red Bull are asking for allowance to change front tyres because they have blistering.

    - BUT Pirelli recommented not to exceed a certain camber angle. McLaren and Red Bull exceeded it, while Ferrari didn't. That's why they got blistering.

    - Now McLaren and Red Bull are also asking for allowance to change the set up of the car, and they request the softer compound not to be used during the race.

  • Kai28/08/2011 at 10:54

Strange sense of deja vu... You could get a really long cable and plug it into your computer instead?

yeah, I'm hoping (deluded?) that I can plug my phone line directly into my laptop the old fashioned way, but I don't know. Stupid question bc I've had wifi so long that I forget - do I need the router to have any DSL access?

  • Leigh O'Gorman28/08/2011 at 10:54

    Stranger and stranger

@alanbaldwinf1: Pirelli say the 17 new front dry tyres they have brought into paddock will not be used, despite FIA statement about their possible use.

  • Jeremy28/08/2011 at 10:54

I'm here. I was just catching up on comments.

You should get about 5 hours out of your battery. Possible more.

  • Steven Roy28/08/2011 at 10:55

Strange sense of deja vu... You could get a really long cable and plug it into your computer instead?

It still needs mains power and the laptop won't produce that unless you have an inverter which you can stitch into the circuitry. Of course that would just kill the laptop battery faster

  • Kai28/08/2011 at 10:55

Pele is also the name of the goddess spirit of the Hawaiian islands.

    I remember him well.

  • Leigh O'Gorman28/08/2011 at 10:55

@alanbaldwinf1: Pirelli say the 17 new front dry tyres they have brought into paddock will not be used, despite FIA statement about their possible use.

So what's the point of bringing it in, then? Bizarre.

  • Kai28/08/2011 at 10:55

You should get about 5 hours out of your battery. Possible more.

oooh, yay! And do I need my router to get DSL access or can I plug my phone line directly into my laptop for it?

yeah, I'm hoping (deluded?) that I can plug my phone line directly into my laptop the old fashioned way, but I don't know. Stupid question bc I've had wifi so long that I forget - do I need the router to have any DSL access?

When I first came on SPC, my housemate had moved out and taken a (shared) wireless router away with her. I was definitely able to lie plugged in on the floor next to the phone socket and get online.

  • Jeremy28/08/2011 at 10:56

5 hours of battery? From a MacBook??

Depends which model, but I've had 9 hours on half screen brightness and just basic web, email, spreadsheet usage

  • Kai28/08/2011 at 10:56

When I first came on SPC, my housemate had moved out and taken a (shared) wireless router away with her. I was definitely able to lie plugged in on the floor next to the phone socket and get online.

sweet. I so hope that's true for me, but as long as I'm safe beggars can't be choosers. :)

    - BUT Pirelli recommented not to exceed a certain camber angle. McLaren and Red Bull exceeded it, while Ferrari didn't. That's why they got blistering.

That is ridiculous. Parc fermé applies. It may be an incredibly stupid rule but they should stick to it

  • Kai28/08/2011 at 10:57

    Yes.

For dial up you need your laptop to have a modem and you need a number to dial

  • Pat W28/08/2011 at 10:58

Martin Hines has died. You may not know him but he is one of the biggest names in karting as a driver, team owner promoter of talent. He was at Lewis Hamilton's first ever kart race and after spotting him he immediately went and spoke to Anthony Hamilton to say he was prepared to offer some assistance. He helped a load of young drivers.

    Bugger :(

  • Jeremy28/08/2011 at 10:58

oooh, yay! And do I need my router to get DSL access or can I plug my phone line directly into my laptop for it?

your router is probably a modem & router all-in-one type device.

your computer might have a dial up modem built in if it was old enough, but if it is a MacBook, then it won't.

it definitely won't have a DSL modem built in. Sorry

  • Jeremy28/08/2011 at 11:00

DSL is completely different technology, delivered over the same bit of copper wiring that was designed for voice, not data. its amazing it works at all :)

  • Kai28/08/2011 at 11:00

your router is probably a modem & router all-in-one type device.

I don't know anything about this stuff, so forgive me if I've used the wrong terminology. I pr'ly said router and I meant modem. I'm old, there's hurricane on, so be gentle with me. :)

I'll just wait and see when the power goes out.

  • Leigh O'Gorman28/08/2011 at 11:00

So, who else can we now rule out of winning his race?

  • Pat W28/08/2011 at 11:00

    - BUT Pirelli recommented not to exceed a certain camber angle. McLaren and Red Bull exceeded it, while Ferrari didn't. That's why they got blistering.

Well that's it then, their fault, use some from an existing allocation and not get free tyres. Start from pitlane if they have to change setup.

  • Alison28/08/2011 at 11:01

your router is probably a modem & router all-in-one type device.

Oh I see yes! We had virgin cable broadband when I plugged it in. The virgin box thing was still there. This is making more sense.

  • Leigh O'Gorman28/08/2011 at 11:02

    No judgement here :)

If your power goes out, its probably also out at the telephone exchange, and you won't get anything, DSL or dial up. Even using your 3G smart phone as a modem is unlikely because the mobile phone network will probably be down as well.

You might have to mail us a letter!

alanbaldwinf1: Paul Hembery told me they had to seek permission yesterday to bring them into paddock because the situation then was unclear.

willbuxton : Confirmation from Hembrey - no change in tyre regs. Drivers in top 10 start on those on which they qualified. Any change, start from pitlane

so a lot of fuss about nothing.

  • Steven Roy28/08/2011 at 11:03

And thinking about it, that needed the power socket too :(

If only we didn't need electricity to make all these things work

  • Journeyer28/08/2011 at 11:03

So, who else can we now rule out of winning his race?

I wouldn't rule RBR out just yet. The rain can come at any minute. The start can even be red-flagged if someone does something silly ala 1998.

  • Steven Roy28/08/2011 at 11:03

He photobombs his own photos, that's how often he gets around.

    Hi guys,

Short hello just to thank you all for your concern and to say all is well. I have no electricity but my nice landlord has hooked up my fridge to his generator for a few hours to help save my food. I used a powerstrip so I plugged in my modem and laptop for a second.

Turns out I have no link to the outside world except texting because all of the stores I checked (7) were sold out and the iHome battery backup is just for time, not radio.

    It's freaky, but I'm fine.

  • Kai28/08/2011 at 20:47

Special thank you to Bassano for transcribing my texts. Very kind.

  • Lukeh28/08/2011 at 20:48

Least you're safe and the worst has all gone now, that's what matters. Really good to hear from you :)

There's picture from Conneticut on the BBC website and it looks pretty scary.

I see blue sky and a big tree down in the yard, but no damage other than the little fence.

Our whole town is out of power and many other towns.

The black sections are 81%-100% outage. http://www.cl-p.com/outage/OutageMap.aspx

Flooding is a major issue here, so I have to see when that recedes so we can all get to school.

    Stressful.

Boring race, Power and his teammates just driving away from everyone. Now the feed from the track has died and we're in infinite commercials!

Chequered. Snoozefest. Power and his teammates held station for the duration, followed by Dario and Dixon.

Great drive by Pantano to take 6th in Wilson's car after not racing these cars for 6 years (and only then he did two starts).
