Hello all, I hope this British bank holiday is treating you well so far! It’s finally the day we’ve all been waiting for, race day!! The F1 summer holidays are finally over and our favourite sport is back with somewhat of a bang. We’ve had birthdays, contract signings, little bit of politics, incidents, rain, and a few shock qualifying results, and we haven’t even had the race yet! If you’ve missed any of the race weekend action so far you can catch up with why Pastor got a penalty and Mark Webber’s news over at Christine’s fabulous F1 minute. Speaking of Christine’s wonderful work, if you missed Qualifying yesterday you can catch the highlights of the best coverage here.
We were treated to some great TV last night, Dr Who was back last night and wow what an episode! If you’ve seen it and haven’t yet caught Christine’s or Lukeh’s thoughts then please do. What.an.episode!
Reading festival is also on this weekend and as usual, here at Sidepodcast we’re embracing the festival, so please join us for live chatter tonight here.
Shall we get on with some arty and fun links for this glorious Sunday then?
• I’ve always wanted to visit Budapest and these photos just make me want to go there more.
• I’ve know some people like to play with their food, but this is taking that to a whole new level!
• Now that polaroid film as we know and love it is becoming much rarer how about turning a normal photograph into one using one very simple thing.
• I love these, some wonderful ‘brandversations’ for you all.
• Finally, if you saw a Super Mario Bros box hanging in the air in front of you, would you know what to do?
That’s about it for today. Have an amazing day, I hope all of you in the US that may have been/ may be affected by the hurricane are all safe and well. See you in the comments!
hello race day!
wohooo! :)
Finally!
love those brandversations, all awesome.
Evening folks.
All quiet here for the moment.
I'm realllly hoping I'll be able to watch the race tomorrow morning. It'll be on at 8am EST. *fingers crossed* That will be at the height of things.
things?
Hurricane Irene. NYC evacuated 250,000 people, mass transit is closed there. High winds and flooding here.
http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at201109_radar.html?MR=1
blimey, i saw some tweets. didn't realise it was that crazy.
states of emergency in 11 states. 6 people have died so far in it.
are you not having to leave?
I don't have to. I'm not near water and they're evacuating only due to storm surges (predicted 4-8 feet). It'll be high winds for me 50-80mph. My concern is trees falling on my place. We'll lose power, but it's just for how long. Some say a week, but hopefully not that long.
I want to see Spa!
And school is supposed to start Tuesday.
blimey!
They've already canceled our work day Monday, so we had to get everything done in 2, not 3 days, so that was a lot/stressful. We'll see when the roads get cleared from downed trees and power gets put on for the school, then we'll start.
Here's a story if people want to read. I don't want to harp on it, but they've never done a lot of the things they're doing to prepare for this storm and I've been through several hurricanes and blizzards here. I hope we're ready here in the States and it won't end up being as bad as predicted, but it is scary to be by myself in the woods surrounded by trees with high winds. I hope it'ok to talk about here. I've been staying on twitter mostly, out of consideration.

Nature is mighty! Stay safe.
Yes, and to be respected.
Thanks. :)
I’ve always wanted to visit Budapest and these photos just make me want to go there more.
I love those, especially the one with the 2 hands coming out of the building across the alley.
My parents are just back fromBudapest. Loved it apparently.
It looks beautiful.
I’ve know some people like to play with their food, but this is taking that to a whole new level!
I love that zebra. The first one. Maybe it's not a zebra? They're all amazing. Great photography, too.
Ah Formula 1. You never fail to disappoint me.
I love the food pics. The second pic - the smiley face reminds me of the characters of this ad from the 70s

Evening folks,
Finally catching qualifying now - hope all are good
:)
If you have not finished watching it I won't say anything about it. Nothing at all.
Hmmmmmmm.
That looks like you are humming to yourself
Sorry, that should have been grrrrrrrrrrrrr
;-)
:D
Fair enough - still on the build-up
:)
Good thing I've no idea who you support
It's not about that, but you will see. Eyes wide open at the end of quali 2.
Cheers - T-10 for Q1 to me
:)
Michael off after 2 minutes?? Gah....
I am far too drunk for qualifying so I'm not sure I can get to the finish. Good night.
Night Leigh
Night Steven,
I'll post "Something for the Weekend" in the morning. It's a little barnstormer
:)
I look forward to that
BTW You should watch the last minute of Q2 and a couple of minutes after the end of Q2 before going to bed
Will do - just got to the end of Q1. Shame for di Resta, but good job by Heikki.
It seem weird that I can say "I know what part of the paddock Jake and Eddie are standing in" and it's not quite the F1 paddock...
Di Resta said that the team told him to pit because he was safe and by the time he pitted he was out
ouchio
"If we gave heikki a better car I think he would be chasing for the world championship. Next year we will. I think the environment at team lotus has brought the best out of him" - Fernandes
http://twitter.com/tonyfernandes/statuses/107658836613152768
I want what he has been drinking. I am prepared to believe given the right car Heikki could win a title but no way is Lotus that car next year
7 people dead already as a result of the hurricane hitting the US east coast
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/millions-braced-hurricane-hits-america-113333156.html
Hope all the sidpodcast fans there are safe
daily mail have some amazing pics: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2030977/Hurricane-Irene-path-2011-New-York-turns-ghost-town.html
Grand Central station looks exactly like it did in a film I saw. Can't remember which one but I remember a shoot out while a pram bounced down those
stairs
Weird seeing New York so deserted
indeed, crazy.
i shall sleep now, bring on the race :)
Good night
I like you, Tony. I really do. But he was in a McLaren - when a McLaren driver won the world championship.
#sorryAmy
He was never going to beat Lewis. I am sure Heikki is more confident and has improved since then. You don't need to be the greatest driver in the world to win a title in the right car.
I think Heikki is a lot better than people think
True to a certain extent. But the thing is, he wasn't even close to Lewis that year. Unlike, say, Massa in 2006, I didn't see anything in Heikki's performance that convinced me he had the potential to win a championship. I sure hope I'm wrong, though.
Amy's gonna love you when she reads that. :D
:D
A few years ago someone asked me which drivers they should watch in the junior formulae who I thought would be successful in F1. I said Lewis and Heikki. So he owes me an improvement in his results.
I think he had been messed about at Renault and just didn't expect Lewis to be so good. I can see him being like Button. SPend a few years under the radar and pop up and get some surprising results
:D
But even Jenson showed tons of potential in his rookie season. He was also somewhat underrated as being best of the rest in 2002.
He didn't have Lewis as a team mate
Now that I have made Amy happy I can go to bed. Night all
Night
He had Ralf Schumacher, who demolished Zanardi 30+ points to nil the year before. He was pretty highly rated at the time.
Night Steven.
So far it's been ok here. The rain is steadier now. It's supposed to be intensifying from 2am to 6am EST, then worst from 6am to noon EST.
I managed to sleep a few hours. It's now 2am.
Lights just blinked. May not have power for very long. I'll text Bassano with updates now and then. Enjoy the race if I'm not here! Hopefully I'll see it at some point. :)
Lights still on. I heart electricity. :)
Karun's in traffic trying to get to the circuit to call the GP2 race with Will Buxton.
Feels like traffic management at Spa worse than before ! Taken 25 minutes for 1 [email protected] may have to talk about the GP2 race alone !
Seems I've gotten up at the same time as lots of folks in the UK and those getting ready for the race in Belgium. I guess I'm in the wrong time zone.
I am awake!
Is it raining there?
15 mins or less until gp2,and shumacher is all over my tv
No reports of rain at the track the moment, but 13C.
I wonder if Karun got there.
hehe, i watched the GP3 race, it looked dry,
I meant in the US
@ManipeF1 Official forecast here in the media centre says it's going to be dry and partly cloudy for the rest of the day. High of 17 degrees.
And yes, here we are having a hurricane. It's raining. And blowing wind. :)
Oh dear, stay safe.
And once its over keep well away from rivers!
GP2 is now on TV and it looks nice and bright there
If you read back in the daily it's all there. I don't want to fill the comments with it.
And New York has had major evacuations and all mass transit is shut. First time ever.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-14698151
Two independent DRS zones for monza, instead of the silly double zone we had before http://adamcooperf1.com/2011/08/28/fia-plans-two-independent-drs-zones-for-monza/
Well I hope you keep your power as long as possible. I had to stay inside with no water/power for a week after we had bad floods one year. It's so depressing.
Me too, thanks. I'm glad I made it to 4:30am so far.. :)
46,000 folks out so far in Connecticut
It must have been a while ago now thinking about it. I was revising for my A Levels by candlelight. We had to go into the school and sit by the windows to take them split up into all the classrooms instead of in the hall. Quite funny looking back.
I want to be a storm chaser, I had one big storm when i was a kid and have seen nothing really like it since, although we did have a bit of a windstorm this spring.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=845961714395&set=a.845961290245.2527467.61406603&type=1
I'd want to be a storm chaser because it implies I'd have a choice about where it was relative to where I am. I'd love to have a choice about it. :)
There is an element of excitement about it, but it's scary to think about trees falling on my apartment in 50-80mph winds.
I want to see if this link works
http://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat=41.55570602&lon=-73.20618439&zoom=8&pin=Woodbury, CT
rain comes in bands, now it's getting heavier and heavier. We still have 8 hours of it to go.
Dont forget about the rivers afterwards, A lot of the problems in queensland came after the storms when the rivers and watercourses swelled.
Not sure if the same will happen there, but its somthing people might not realize is happening untill its too late
ah yes. Thanks. :)
We're in a state of emergency, so hopefully people will honor that and stay home.
Awesome sign from somewhere on the east coast :) http://twitpic.com/6chogh
hehe
Huge crash in the GP2, the guy looks ok, but the whole rear axel of the car was ripped out and was a good 20 metres away
oh no. :(
He walked away, it was at the top of eau rouge
I enjoyed the track walk with Sutil and DC yesterday. Sutil talked about coming up over Eau Rouge and seeing only sky.
redbullf1spy Red Bull F1 Spy
Just spotted Jacky Ickx saying good morning to Jérôme d'Ambrosio on the steps of the Energy Station. Salut!
Wish I was there. :)
I am happy a Kiwi won the GP3 :D
ooh, thats good inspiration, i think i might get one for lunch :)
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
grrrrrr
You're a cannibal?
I like the furry green ones!
hehe
I was hoping that's the case. :)
I'm afraid I have no possible idea what you could mean.
:D Yum yum yum
Never heard that one before? ;)
He only does it to annoy me!
Amy was not happy when i proved that they are called Kiwi's and not Kiwi fruits in the uk :)
Nick? Never!
I don't care what you call them, you're wrong
I cant even find the photo :(
Morning folks
Finally caught Q3 - mega lap by Vettel. Good job by Senna too.
...and Alg
:)
Hey all! i had a dream that JB the race today followed by Alonso and Di Resta.. so that'll be my prediction for the race :)
Exciting at the very end, too.
oh, that would be fun! I vote yes on that. Good job dreaming the result. :)
I had an F1 dream every night for a week during and after I got back from seeing you guys in July.
i'm not sure where Webber was tho i'm afraid, so that'll have to be a surprise :)
it's okay, he's a big boy, now that he's had his 35th bday, he can handle it. So can I. :)
yaaayy! F1 dreams are the best! did they involve your favourites Webber and Petrov? :)
:D

Something for the Weekend: Hoyt Ming and His Pep Steppers “Indian War Whoop”
http://theweekendpollution.wordpress.com/2011/08/27/something-for-the-weekend-hoyt-ming-and-his-pep-steppers-indian-war-whoop/
:)
yeah, and I think we had lunch. Usually my dreams involve some task or adventure. I hope DiResta gets through the field ok today.
I'm sure Di Resta will be alright, he'll take a simialar strategy to JB if my dream is right :D
Also, adventure dreams sound exhausting!
oh, good. I'm relieved to hear it.
Good reconnaissance.
It seems I have a lot of missions or something, so there's sometimes a sense of urgency. yeah, it can be not-so-restful.
i bet!
Also, congrats to Romain Grosjean for his GP2 title - about time really. Ever since Turkey, he's looked the best of that field.
but what is the rest of the field like?
Apparently IndyCar are about "90%" of the way the way to confirming a race in China next year.
You'd think they would concentrate on fixing problems at home first, but...
The top five or six are pretty decent if still a little inconsistent. With time, there's a few good'uns in there. Grosjean is a far, far better driver now than he was two years ago.
Ahhhh damn
"Stefano Coletti to miss rest of GP2 season after injuring back in Spa crash"
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/94054
I think that while he does deserve a second chance, I don't think it'll be any different to the first time. At least he'll get France interested again.
France will only get intrested when a French driver wins a race. I don't think he'll be near that ;)
Disagree. His head is sorted in a far better way now - he got promoted far too young in too ropey a circumstance to ever perform to his full potential.
And he was in a team with alonso... look what thats done even to the likes of massa
And although others have probably already said it, what on Earth was Maldonado thinking at the end of Q2?
Very true.
Some intriguing driver dilemmas at the end of the season, with Senna/Grosjean for Renault and Buemi/Alguersuari/Vergne/Ricciardo at Toro Rosso.
yes, see yesterday's daily for the discussion. :)
If Kubica is not well enough to come back, and lotus have enough cash they could replace petrov with Senna, and then put grosjean in the other seat
Porsche supercup about to start, some darker clouds in the background now
It'd be interesting to see what kind of attendance there is at Spa for the Grand Prix. Tends to be one of the weaker events on the calendar for crowd numbers.
Why is that - hard to get to, biblical rain and a large circuit, easier to see on tv?
Mixture of high prices and a pain to get to, but apparently it's regularly in the bottom three for crowd figures.
It's so beautiful and seems to be a favorite for the drivers. I know there was talk about getting rid of it at some point. I hope they never do.
Ticket prices are everything, why pay a fortune for something you can watch at home for free?
I didn't find it too expensive but the access, ohhhh the access
I took one look at the prices earlier this year and thought "noooooooo waaaaaay....."
:)
I've bought tickets to 10 races in 5 countries, I think its skewed my expectations of what 'cheap' means :D
I think 30 pounds for friday and 40 for saturday/sunday would be reasonable
Monza is ace for me. Great racing, venue and prices.
:)
see I'd call that 'an impossibly cheap bargain'
Its about the same as football prices, if you take bernie out the equation its a reasonable ammount :)
Really? I'd call the current prices absurdly expensive for the most part
thats about $170 aud, I don't even think twice for F1 tickets below about $450. Once they get above that I go 'ooh thats a bit steep' then buy them anyway :D
Interesting:
Morning all.
I can't wait for the race to start today. Especially now Lou has guaranteed di Resta a podium
I'm glad she scouted that for us. :)
Good morning.
Confusing?
THis event being Spa?
Why 17 tyres? What use is an odd number and how do they decide who gets those tyres since 24 cars need 48 front tyres?
Nice to see you are still in one piece
so far so good. Landfall in 5 hours.
Plenty time to see the race before you need to find your crash helmet
Might be a manufacturing problem only effecting some of the tyres?
Still, if you change one persons tyres you should change them for everyone?
I really hope I'll have power for the race, that would be incredible. 100,000 people lost power so far in CT.
?? That's weird.
Hearing lots of right-front issues. Red Bull especially affected apparently.
They are hard on their tyres, but you cant let just some of the teams change surely!
I agree.
That is scary if it has not made landfall yet
True, but rare is the driver who fared poorly first time out but excelled when given a second chance.
Do you have a hamster you can hook up to generate power?
Lotus having enough cash? Heh. They're cash-strapped badly enough as it is.
No, but there is a puppy at the neighbor's....hmm....
Sounds like prices for Sepang. :D
17 cars survived Q1 and no-on in Q1 used dry tyres?
yeah, but now that the sun has come up (we won't see that until much later today, but at least it's brighter) I feel better. At least I can see what's swaying and how much.
If they come to agreement with tony then they can use there lawyer money to sponsor the seat for bruno ;)
Echoes of Indy 2005. That said, how can a sole tyre supplier get something like this wrong? Surely they should've put a buffer in for safety?
No dry tyres used until Q3
Ah. Makes sense.
Like racing in heavy rain. If you can't see you can't take avoiding action
Adam Cooper with more on the tyre issue
http://adamcooperf1.com/2011/08/28/tyre-controversy-unfolds-at-spa/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
That's that theory screwed then
If it is up to his recent standard the headline will be
Shock news
All teams to use tyres At Spa
exactly :)
FTA:
"One team is said in such extreme trouble with front blistering that they may have to contemplate a set-up change, which would mean dropping out of parc ferme and starting from the pitlane. Extreme cambers have contributed to the pace of certain cars through Sector 2."
Any guess as to which team this could be?
Red Bull because section two is where you need lots of downforce.
And Horner and Newey are with the FIA
It might make sense having 17 tyres as its one for each car from q2 onwards
I already said that
Ah, so you did
Interesting. I was thinking it could be Ferrari, given how they did yesterday.
Hehehe, I would love to go through life finding Super Mario boxes in the air like that :D easiest way to get money ever.
Love the brandversations too!
Morning all.
Doubt it will be them as they strugle to get heat into there tyres, but its possible they over compensated with extreme camber
Martin Hines has died. You may not know him but he is one of the biggest names in karting as a driver, team owner promoter of talent. He was at Lewis Hamilton's first ever kart race and after spotting him he immediately went and spoke to Anthony Hamilton to say he was prepared to offer some assistance. He helped a load of young drivers.
Great great shame

Yay! Shame it's not at Silverstone though
I am amazed that doesn't work as an Apple headping

Latest update on Giggles junior
http://andronovjr.com/2011/08/ThethreeawakestatesofNina.html
Love the last pic
Cost, cost, and cost-savings.
:D
I'm just glad it's not a circuit that's on the calendar.
Mugello would be a good addition to the calendar but not even Bernie would drop Monza
Does your internet not die without power?
Definitely Giggles' daughter :)
She was kind enough to let me see Quali. I bow down to her massive strength. It's like giving an offering to Pele for mercy in Hawaii. :)
That never even crossed my mind.
The football player?
I have to see what happens. Of course wifi is out because the router will be down, but I wonder if the phone line still works if I can get it there. I don't know.
Thinking back to when we had our floods and stuff, all our phone line, mobiles everything went out. I guess you need power at the masts/for wifi router etc. and often phone cables must take the same routes as power lines?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelé
hehe.
Yeah. The football player, who is also a female goddess of Hawaii. :)
A female godess?
yes, but sometimes phone remains even when power is out.
I have to take today one minute and one challenge at a time. If I just stop communicating, then we know I can't get online and the power went out. :)
For now, the fact that I'm sitting here watching tv coverage, the sun is up so I can see a little outside and I'm in the comments is amazing.
McLaren and Red Bull are allowed to change front tyres - La Sexta
Wha?? Red Bull, Steven predicted correctly. But McLaren??
Pele is also the name of the goddess spirit of the Hawaiian islands.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pele_(deity)
But your router needs power
In any case, that may explain the 17 tyres. I'm guessing this means that everyone will have to be allowed to change front tyres anyway, not just RBR and McLaren.
yes, so I have no idea if I'll have access once the power goes out.
Strange sense of deja vu... You could get a really long cable and plug it into your computer instead?
Didn't know about her. I saw Pele (deity) and assumed it was the footballer. He was the undisputed best player in the world and possible the best ever
From la Sexta (copied off autosport forums ;))
- McLaren and Red Bull are asking for allowance to change front tyres because they have blistering.
- BUT Pirelli recommented not to exceed a certain camber angle. McLaren and Red Bull exceeded it, while Ferrari didn't. That's why they got blistering.
- Now McLaren and Red Bull are also asking for allowance to change the set up of the car, and they request the softer compound not to be used during the race.
yeah, I'm hoping (deluded?) that I can plug my phone line directly into my laptop the old fashioned way, but I don't know. Stupid question bc I've had wifi so long that I forget - do I need the router to have any DSL access?
Stranger and stranger
I'm here. I was just catching up on comments.
You should get about 5 hours out of your battery. Possible more.
It still needs mains power and the laptop won't produce that unless you have an inverter which you can stitch into the circuitry. Of course that would just kill the laptop battery faster
I remember him well.
5 hours of battery? From a MacBook??
So what's the point of bringing it in, then? Bizarre.
oooh, yay! And do I need my router to get DSL access or can I plug my phone line directly into my laptop for it?
When I first came on SPC, my housemate had moved out and taken a (shared) wireless router away with her. I was definitely able to lie plugged in on the floor next to the phone socket and get online.
Depends which model, but I've had 9 hours on half screen brightness and just basic web, email, spreadsheet usage
sweet. I so hope that's true for me, but as long as I'm safe beggars can't be choosers. :)
Then McLaren and Red Bull are to blame and should not get new tyres
That is ridiculous. Parc fermé applies. It may be an incredibly stupid rule but they should stick to it
I'll keep the screen brightness low. Thanks for reminding me on that.
I can't, I need a separate dial up account. I didn't even know you could still sign up for a dial up account :D
Yes.
For dial up you need your laptop to have a modem and you need a number to dial
Bugger :(
your router is probably a modem & router all-in-one type device.
your computer might have a dial up modem built in if it was old enough, but if it is a MacBook, then it won't.
it definitely won't have a DSL modem built in. Sorry
Apparently its vettel with the tyre issue http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9574828.stm
With this tyre shindig in mind, I'm thinking........ Massa might win... (probably / maybe / who knows / sod it)
But I have DSL over the phone line.
dial up would do for comments, but streaming video? No way :(
Good afternoon
doesnt work the same way I'm afraid
DSL is completely different technology, delivered over the same bit of copper wiring that was designed for voice, not data. its amazing it works at all :)
I don't know anything about this stuff, so forgive me if I've used the wrong terminology. I pr'ly said router and I meant modem. I'm old, there's hurricane on, so be gentle with me. :)
I'll just wait and see when the power goes out.
So, who else can we now rule out of winning his race?
Well that's it then, their fault, use some from an existing allocation and not get free tyres. Start from pitlane if they have to change setup.
Oh I see yes! We had virgin cable broadband when I plugged it in. The virgin box thing was still there. This is making more sense.
Ricciardo might not win
Don't be so sure
;)
And thinking about it, that needed the power socket too :(
Anyway, I'm off to the race thread
No judgement here :)
If your power goes out, its probably also out at the telephone exchange, and you won't get anything, DSL or dial up. Even using your 3G smart phone as a modem is unlikely because the mobile phone network will probably be down as well.
You might have to mail us a letter!
#sorryKai
alanbaldwinf1: Paul Hembery told me they had to seek permission yesterday to bring them into paddock because the situation then was unclear.
willbuxton : Confirmation from Hembrey - no change in tyre regs. Drivers in top 10 start on those on which they qualified. Any change, start from pitlane
so a lot of fuss about nothing.
If only we didn't need electricity to make all these things work
I wouldn't rule RBR out just yet. The rain can come at any minute. The start can even be red-flagged if someone does something silly ala 1998.
The Post Office won't be working in that weather
Actually, it's a lot of fuss about something, because Red Bull and McLaren may have shot themselves in the feet quite badly
I only have an iPod touch, no smartphone, so I'll start gathering your addresses now and pull out my quill and inkwell. :)
James Allen is doing a report for Australian TV from a bridge outside the circuit. I wonder if they won't let him in :D
the BBC are saying its only Red Bull. so who knows ;)
Don't forget the candles!
it's okay. It'll be what it will be. I just may not be around for a few days until they get it back on.
Others reports have said Red Bull's, Hamilton and Alguersuari though
It's quite good fun having no power for about 25 minutes.
yeah, then it gets old. So does the food in the fridge.
As long as you don't open the ref, your food will be fine since the cold won't get out.
So if the power goes out you just have to pig out
Have you got lots of water available?
Oh yes, and batteries, candles, hand written phone numbers, and old phone that isn't a cordless. I'm well prepared. We've had lots of warning all this week, so that's been good. It's been the only story here.
yep :)
yeah, I'll have some time. Depends on when they get power back on.
@Kai - how's the weather? not much going on here just a little rain. not even too windy yet.
Jeremy, if you're not in bed yet, don't forget https://www.passports.gov.au tomorrow!
Holy....
Hurricane Irene approaching NYC http://twitpic.com/6caimh
i still can't believe how slow this thing is. I'm still waiting...and hoping it weakens. like Kai said, everyone has had loads of warning. but it's scary to see how random people talk on the news about how it's not going to be too bad. better than people that spend years studying this stuff.
I'm wondering if the US Open will start tomorrow, most of the talk I'm seeing on my tennis twitter seems to be like 'hmm, whats the big deal?'
a bit lower in the comments it says it's a hoax. the picture was taken some days ago in florida
Due to it's enormity possibly
a day ago they said it would go through MUCH earlier and so monday's schedule was going to be normal. I suspect that it's changed significantly and will also depend on how long it takes to restore essential infrastructure (be it broken or just hopefully just turned off).
bye all
Judy Murray says its been and gone and was "like a crap day in Scotland" but the lack of public transport may be an issue.

wow, fair play Lewis, admitting his error:

After watching the replay, I realize it was my fault today 100%. I didn't give Kobayashi enough room though I thought in was past.
there's more:
Apologies to Kamui and to my team. The team deserves better from me. Best wishes, Lewis Congrats to Jenson, I solid drive.
nice one.

MotoGP at Indy just about to start. BBC2
That sounds promising
Home just in time
Sounds like there'll be some missed school days even before term starts on Tues though
that's good
good news! fingers crossed the worst has passed..
ARGH! I HATE SPEED! Can't even show their home GP on time... 6-8 minute tape delay.
It is but a mere tropical storm now :)
They did the same at Laguna
Do they still do it for F1 qualifying? Speed has been blacked out for 3 or so years here in Canada, for F1 Q and race. We do get FP2, not blacked out.
I heard they cut that out now
BBC spy drama at 21:00, Page Eight, looks good

Kai update:
"It's over. Goodnight Irene! All I hear are chainsaws n generators"
Woohoo!
At least she survived it. Now I guess it is just sit tight and hope there is no damage and the power is connected soon
they nicked trulli's power steering!
phew. Am very happy she's safe and sound :) I hope she gets more rest and sleep tonight :)
Trulli was interviewed about it on the forum. The modified system only operates to a certain load and Spa puts more steering load than it can cope with
unreal. was he miserable?
No. He was quite happy but then he finished in front of Heikki
odd. heikki had a terrible race.
#rankings for mclaren. they flew the 3rd place trophy to manchester for fans:

I am sure it won't last. Especially when he has to run the new system in Monza too
Bloody Christian Horner gets everywhere, I bet he photo bombs like a demon at tourist spots
He photobombs his own photos, that's how often he gets around.
finally a decent sponsor trophy.
i missed this earlier, so apologies if it's been discussed before, but Hamilton excepts 100% blame for his accident today?

Excellent
ooh, we have a ping for that: http://www.f1minute.com/news/maldonado-criticises-whilst-hamilton-apologises

I am officially done now.
We don't believe you ;)
Glass of wine (or two) for your effort :)
you works too hard :)
Very wise :)
Sounds like a plan!
dats my cue.
as we run away for a bit, please do have a look at the sidepodcast homepage.
i love that it's got spc, f1m, big pic and fbfb content all rolled up into a big collage of f1 goodness.
IndyCar pre-race is under way for any takers

It's started already?
Started at 9, green should be within the next 30 or 40 minutes I would imagine
OK
i love Vladimir Rys' work. it's simply stunning, all the time. wonderful choice Christine!
Gorgeous pic

Hi guys,
Short hello just to thank you all for your concern and to say all is well. I have no electricity but my nice landlord has hooked up my fridge to his generator for a few hours to help save my food. I used a powerstrip so I plugged in my modem and laptop for a second.
Turns out I have no link to the outside world except texting because all of the stores I checked (7) were sold out and the iHome battery backup is just for time, not radio.
It's freaky, but I'm fine.
Special thank you to Bassano for transcribing my texts. Very kind.
Least you're safe and the worst has all gone now, that's what matters. Really good to hear from you :)
There's picture from Conneticut on the BBC website and it looks pretty scary.
Glad you are ok
I see blue sky and a big tree down in the yard, but no damage other than the little fence.
Our whole town is out of power and many other towns.
The black sections are 81%-100% outage. http://www.cl-p.com/outage/OutageMap.aspx
Flooding is a major issue here, so I have to see when that recedes so we can all get to school.
Stressful.
good to hear from you! I hope everything ends well!
I'll have to look for that.
No problem, commenting by proxy is the least I could do :)
Green at Sonoma
Boring race, Power and his teammates just driving away from everyone. Now the feed from the track has died and we're in infinite commercials!
oh my goodness!
http://twitter.com/#!/vladimirrys/status/107924790647603201/photo/1
it seems all parts of f1 photography are dangerous. second great shot i've seen from mr Rys today tho!
I've just heard 10 f1minute(s) in a row. Poor Christine, she needs to breath ;-)
If you try http://www.justin.tv/jab01?#/w/1685938912 the feed is excellent.
It wasn't a problem with the justin feed, it was the source.
Although to be honest this race is so dull I'm half-tempted to call it
Oh wow. @charltonbrooker is not an F1 fan. You'll have to check out his tweets for yourselves as they are too sweary.
He said a couple of things, saw the reaction, and started baiting for more. Ignore him.
Mr Rys likes F1 minute :) - http://twitter.com/#!/vladimirrys/status/107933741623676929
:) next to lorenzo his work seems to appear in f1 racing every month!
doesn't even deserve the time you loose reading the tweets
Fair enough. I'm unfollowing him. Just thought others should see them too.
It's a pro BBC Four thing that turned into a game. He's a funny guy, best not take it too seriously
Chequered. Snoozefest. Power and his teammates held station for the duration, followed by Dario and Dixon.
Great drive by Pantano to take 6th in Wilson's car after not racing these cars for 6 years (and only then he did two starts).
