I've been on holiday for a bit and so has F1, so there's not much to report on, so it's time for...

Answers to The 7th Hardest F1 Quiz Ever

There may be some contention about some of these, so see me in the Stuart's Steward's Box afterwards if you feel I've got anything wrong!

1) How long was Juan Manuel Fangio's longest pit stop at the 1951 Belgian Grand Prix (to the nearest minute)?

  • 4 minutes
  • 8 minutes
  • 14 minutes
  • 17 minutes

14 minutes and 18 seconds to be exact! No blaming Intertechnique in those days!

2) What year was the last Italian Driver's Champion crowned?

1953 - Alberto Ascari

3) Who was Frank Williams talking about when he said, "I worshipped the guy. He was totally adorable. Everybody in motor racing turned out for his funeral, and there were plenty of red eyes from the hard guys"?

  • Piers Courage
  • Gilles Villeneuve
  • Stefan Beloff
  • Roland Ratzinger

Piers Courage died at the 1970 Beligan Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

4) What in 1999 caused Eddie Irvine to say, "Now I have to start thinking like a title contender"?

  • His maiden win at the very first grand prix
  • Team mate Schumacher, breaking his leg at Silverstone
  • Irvine winning at the very next race, following Schmi's injury
  • Irvine taking the lead in the championship

After Eddie Irvine won in Hockenheim (thanks to supersub, Mika Salo moving over) and Hakkinen not finishing, Irvine found himself leading the championship 52 - 44

5) How many F1 constructors have there been whose name started with an S?

13 (deep breath): Sauber, Scarab, Scirocco, Shadow, Shannon, Simca-Gordini, Simtek, Spirit, Spyker, Stebro, Stewart, Super Aguri, Surtees

6) What was Stirling Moss's highest ever placing in the Monte Carlo Rally?

He came 2nd in 1952 - ah the good old days when racers raced across categories!

7) What is the difference in average race speed (of the winner) between the British Grands Prix of 1963 and 1996?

  • 12.81 mph
  • 16.67 mph
  • 24.22 mph
  • 27.34 mph

107.34 mph vs 124.01 mph

8) What colour was Honda's 2006/2007 winter testing livery?

Black! After tobacco sponsorship was banned, people wondered what the new Honda would look like... Earthdreams *shudder*

This livery!

9) Who was the last driver to get his debut win at the same time as achieving the team's debut win?

It was Vettel for Toro Rosso at the 2007 Italian GP

10) Who took this photograph?

Who took this?

It was F1 photographic legend (and the inspiration for my GCSE project), Rainer Schlegelmilch

11) Who, upon waking in hospital following an accident asked, 'Was it my fault?' ?

  • Rubens Barrichello
  • Mika Hakkinen
  • Felipe Massa

Mika crashed in practice in Adelaide and was saved at the track by Prof Sid Watkins, to whom he spoke the words above

12) Who is this?

Who is this?

It's Niki Lauda at the Nurburgring in 1975 during qualifying. He got pole with a lap he described as 'ultimate madness', scoring a lap record for F1 at 6:58.6 that was never beaten (in F1).

13) Williams were once asked by F1 Racing Magazine to design the ideal F1 car, if rules restrictions didn't apply. Which of the following featured in its design (choose all that apply)?

  • A Mid Wing
  • An F Duct
  • Four Small Front Wheels
  • Four Small Rear Wheels
  • Sliding Skirts
  • Tiny, Non-Separated Front Wing
  • No Rear Wing
  • No Driver (remotely controlled)
  • GPS Controlled auto-differential
  • Closed Cockpit
  • Automatic Steering
  • Wedge Shaped Body

You can find the scan of the article here - it's a great read.

14) Bruce McLaren said, "To be killed in an accident with a Formula 2 car is almost unacceptable" about which F1 driver?

Jim Clark. He was killed at Hockenheim in an F2 car after a rear tyre deflation.

15) What caused Alain Prost to get completely drunk 'for the first time in [his] life'?

  • Winning his first championship
  • Ayrton Senna beating him to the championship by crashing him off in Japan 1990
  • Senna's death
  • Securing his first F1 race seat
  • Winning his first Monaco GP

This race is probably better known for Senna's race through the field to ultimately finish second in his first season. He was catching Prost, but the race was stopped early, due to rain (take note, Mr C - it's not just modern F1!)

16) At top speed, an F1 car can travel along a ceiling

  • True
  • False

This is a bit of a trick question. An F1 car does indeed produce downforce over and above the weight of the car (i.e. enough to hold it to the ceiling), but the engine can not function upside down, so the car cannot actually drive on a ceiling.

17) This guy is well known for doing something related to a previous F1 team. But what?

This guy does something related to a previous F1 team

(Hint: He doesn't actually do anything to do with F1 itself)

That man is Garrison Keillor, and he's the distinctive voice of the Honda adverts. (This may be too tenuous a link to F1, so feel free to grumble)

18) Which former British F1 lead presenter has also competed in the World Rally Championships?

Lee McKenzie is an internationally licensed co-driver and has competed in WRC events, including Rally GB - she has also been the lead presenter for F1 on the BBC.

19) How many legs are on the entire 2011 F1 field of liveries? Only count one car from each team.

(20 points for an exactly right answer, -1 point for each one out, minimum zero)

Okay, are you ready for this?

Red Bull: RedBulls(4 legs) x (2 on the badge + 2 on the nose + 2 on the cockpit + 2 on the headrest + 2 on the engine cover + 2 on the rear wing) + Singha-Lion(4 legs) x (1 on the monocoque) = 52

McLaren: JohnnyWalkerMan(2) x (2 rear wing, 2 mirrors) = 8

Ferrari: PrancingHorse(4) x (2 monocoque, 2 engine cover, 3 headrest, 1 badge) + Puma(2 visible) x (2 airbox) = 36

Mercedes = 0

Renault = 0

Williams = 0

Force India: W&M-Lion(2 legs) x (4 front wing, 2 nose) + UB-Pegasus(4)*(2 airbox, 1 nose) = 24

Sauber: Madcroc(2) x (2 bargeboards) = 4

Toro Rosso: RedBulls(4) x (2 nose, 2 badge, 2 endplate, 2 monocoque, 4 bargeboard, 2 headrest, 2 engine cover, 2 rear wing) = 72!

Lotus = 0

HRT = 0

Virgin: Kappa-People(2) x (1 headrest, 2 front wing) + LDC-Horse(4) x (2 nose) = 14

Total = 214!

20) Which former F1 driver's helmet colours were used for the character Beau Brandenburg in the movie Driven?.

Juan Pablo Montoya

Main pic - Brandenburg, inset - Montoya

So those are the answers! How did you do?

And, of the people bold enough to enter, the winner was... Sladex with 25.5 points (he got the half for naming all the details of the Lauda photo... except for Lauda!) Congrats, Sladex!

Now everyone... to the comments!

I knew Brandenburgs Helmet was either Montoya's Gugelmin's or Blundells. The rookie Bly had Blundell's helmet, and I think Sly Stallone had Gugelmin's.

Good on him. Joe got it wrong on Ricciardo for 2012, though. Looks like it'll be Disco Dan to STR for 2012, maybe a seat swap with Jaime to HRT? Then as long as he doesn't screw up, he will be indeed Web 2.0 when he replaces what would be a retiring Webber at Red Bull.

Makes even more sense if Joe is right and Vergne needs to get a seat - in which case they drop Buemi, who's had more time than Jaime to prove himself.

HAM is reprimanded, MAL gets a 5-place penalty - which, given what they gave to Schumi last year at Hungary, is very light, IMO. He should've gotten a 10-place penalty, at least.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 16:19

if lewis got a reprimand, he clearly made the situation worse, which lessons pastors penalty.

    barichello didn't aggravate schumi.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 16:21

if lewis got a reprimand, he clearly made the situation worse, which lessons pastors penalty.

@eddstrawf1: Both Maldonado and Hamilton deemed guilty of "causing a collision"

and that was after stewards looked at both driver's telemetry.

  • Journeyer27/08/2011 at 16:25

@eddstrawf1: Both Maldonado and Hamilton deemed guilty of "causing a collision"

If both were guilty, why was only Pastor penalized?

  • Journeyer27/08/2011 at 16:26

if lewis got a reprimand, he clearly made the situation worse, which lessens pastor's penalty.

    In Joe's words,

"The punishment seems a little less than severe given what happened."

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 16:29

If both were guilty, why was only Pastor penalized?

lewis is was reprimanded. three strikes and he's out remember.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 16:29

"The punishment seems a little less than severe given what happened."

    i don't agree.

stewards have more data to go on than joe. and we only have three crappy long distance camera shots to judge by.

initially i blamed PM entirely, but if the stewards say lewis moved across, he moved across.

  • Journeyer27/08/2011 at 16:29

    barichello didn't aggravate schumi.

also, should aggravation play a part in giving a penalty? just because he did something stupid, for example, doesn't mean you can too.

  • Journeyer27/08/2011 at 16:30

lewis is was reprimanded. three strikes and he's out remember.

yes, but as of now, that means nothing. if he does nothing else all season, it doesn't really carry any weight. that's not really a punishment to me.

  • Journeyer27/08/2011 at 16:31

initially i blamed PM entirely, but if the stewards say lewis moved across, he moved across.

this is why they should release onboards as soon as possible. because having complete faith in the stewards doesn't always mean they're right?

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 16:31

also, should aggravation play a part in giving a penalty? just because he did something stupid, for example, doesn't mean you can too.

if two cars headed towards each other, yes.

agreed. but as it stands, i don't think we can make a call to argue against them. i truly cannot see properly who moved where and when. the shots aren't conclusive enough to me.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 16:34

here's the thing. after mansell's explanation of penalties in silverstone, i believe he's seen the data and made a good call. his reasoning was sound before.

  • Journeyer27/08/2011 at 16:35

Fair enough. But I'm just not comfortable having blind faith in the stewards - they have to release all the videos NOW.

Yes but I think Lewis only flicked across to wave his hand at Pastor and did so well ahead of him, but yeah that's almost certainly why Hamilton got his reprimand. What Maldonado did after that was ridiculous.

I've just finished watching quali this very minute and the first thing I did was look at the FIA releases.... I was shocked when I saw only a 5 place drop for Maldonado. What has Lewis done to deserve his reprimand. It's like they're trying to make him angry :P

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 21:51

and the reprimand for Lewis? I thought that was unfair too.

I just do not understand that. He moved very slightly right than moved left before Pastor caught him. At the point of impact he was on the left edge of the track moving left on a right hand bend.

I left a comment on Joe's post saying that had they been in each other's positions there is no way Pastor would have got a penalty.

I've just finished watching quali this very minute and the first thing I did was look at the FIA releases.... I was shocked when I saw only a 5 place drop for Maldonado. What has Lewis done to deserve his reprimand. It's like they're trying to make him angry :P

I did the same half an hour ago except I checked Autosport. I Maldonado to be banned from this race because I thought that was the absolute minimum they could do. He should have been banned for the rest of the season.

  • Janna27/08/2011 at 21:53

Hello all. Brilliant day in Seville. Beautiful, clean city. Mighty hot. Great food, good wine.

Christine is a star for fbfb of qualifying. Read her post, know what happened, can't wait for the race feed tomorrow.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 21:53

    Werd!

    WHy?

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 21:53

I left a comment on Joe's post saying that had they been in each other's positions there is no way Pastor would have got a penalty.

we discussed it earlier. i think i agree with the stewards on all counts. they looked at driver telemetry and we didn't. they must've seen lewis move too. nige says it's a fair call, i believe him.

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 21:53

I left a comment on Joe's post saying that had they been in each other's positions there is no way Pastor would have got a penalty.

It's mad! It's like it's a deliberate action to aggravate him. Racial remarks aside, I don't think he was particularly paranoid about the rest of what he said before. The stewards seem very inclined to give him a hard time.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 21:54

He's got form though, Lewis. Plus the obvious reason he alluded to last time.

And the FIA has form for unfairly penalising him

    see the comments

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 21:54

all we've got are a bunch of hopeless camera angles. we have next to nothing to go on. i've never know an incident have such terrible coverage.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 21:55

    WHy?

"..... saying that had they been in each other's positions there is no way Pastor would have got a penalty..... "

Hamilton went looking for trouble. While Maldonado's action is not excusable, Hamilton could have EASILY not put himself in that position.

  • Lukeh27/08/2011 at 21:55

I can't believe there isn't an angle from maldonado's onboard because of restrictions to the amount of stuff they record from cars. Honestly, what century are we in?

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 21:55

we discussed it earlier. i think i agree with the stewards on all counts. they looked at driver telemetry and we didn't. they must've seen lewis move too. nige says it's a fair call, i believe him.

Why would he smash up his own car....

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 21:56

Why would he smash up his own car....

i doubt he meant too. the question is did both drivers swerve at each other.

looking at the penalties you have to assume they both did. earlier in the move lewis appeared to jink right towards pastor.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 21:56

we discussed it earlier. i think i agree with the stewards on all counts. they looked at driver telemetry and we didn't. they must've seen lewis move too. nige says it's a fair call, i believe him.

I can see Lewis moving right but that is before Maldonado catches him. After that Maldonado pulls up and side swipes him like it is NASCAR. Lewis clearly moved left before the impact. I don't need telemetry to see that

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 21:57

I can see Lewis moving right but that is before Maldonado catches him. After that Maldonado pulls up and side swipes him like it is NASCAR. Lewis clearly moved left before the impact. I don't need telemetry to see that

so he's inciting pastor. he's not blameless. fair penalty.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 21:58

I can't believe there isn't an angle from maldonado's onboard because of restrictions to the amount of stuff they record from cars. Honestly, what century are we in?

We got a shot from about half way down between la Source and Eau Rouge. It shows the HAM jink to the (drivers) right and the MAL cutting across HAMs bow.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 21:59

if lewis does nothing wrong for the rest of the season, he got off scott free, no penalty. it's hardly even a penalty is it?

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 21:59

Why would he smash up his own car....

    Red mist.

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 21:59

so he's inciting pastor. he's not blameless. fair penalty.

I don't see what you could possibly do that would make it okay for someone to smash into you on purpose. There's no real claim anyone can make that they were "provoked"

  • Lukeh27/08/2011 at 21:59

We got a shot from about half way down between la Source and Eau Rouge. It shows the HAM jink to the (drivers) right and the MAL cutting across HAMs bow.

Yeah, from lewis. They weren't recording it from Pastor's onboard.

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 22:00

if lewis does nothing wrong for the rest of the season, he got off scott free, no penalty. it's hardly even a penalty is it?

It's not even about that. Seeing as it's no penalty really, it seems rude and inflammatory, why not just let it be.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:00

It's not even about that. Seeing as it's no penalty really, it seems rude and inflammatory, why not just let it be.

    because he's not blameless?

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:00

Yeah, from lewis. They weren't recording it from Pastor's onboard.

No, no,no... This was a track-side camera, on the outside of the track.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:00

Hamilton went looking for trouble. While Maldonado's action is not excusable, Hamilton could have EASILY not put himself in that position.

Hamilton overtook him at the chicane because Pastor left the door wide open. THat is allowed. On the run down from La Source after the chequered flag Lewis was driving slowly and moving slightly right then pulled left before Maldonado was level with the rear of his car. Lewis did absolutely nothing wrong.

WHat could Hamilton have done to avoid it. He was on the left of the track moving left on a right hand bend. Maybe he could have pulled over on to the grass and given Maldonado the full width of the track

  • Andy Taylor27/08/2011 at 22:01

We got a shot from about half way down between la Source and Eau Rouge. It shows the HAM jink to the (drivers) right and the MAL cutting across HAMs bow.

I saw Lewis move to the right, then move back again and then move slightly right as I assume he was preparing for the next corner

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:01

    Lewis did absolutely nothing wrong.

    that.you.saw.

  • Lukeh27/08/2011 at 22:01

No, no,no... This was a track-side camera, on the outside of the track.

Ooh right, i getcha. yeah we have that. I just wish we had the onboard too from Pastor, I find it insane they don't have anything

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 22:02

    because he's not blameless?

What did he do that was wrong? I agree with Steven. It's almost like you seem to expect he evaporate on demand.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:02

Hamilton overtook him at the chicane because Pastor left the door wide open. THat is allowed. .....

Yes, that is allowed. Keep your foot in it and get away from the problem.

Hamilton lifted in order to wait for MAL.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:02

so he's inciting pastor. he's not blameless. fair penalty.

    WHat?

They are on a slow down lap after the chequered flag. They are saving tyre wear that they need for the race so going slowly and varying course slightly are normal. Pastor was mad he screwed up the chicane and acted like a spolied brat.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:03

What did he do that was wrong? I agree with Steven. It's almost like you seem to expect he evaporate on demand.

what i'm saying is, our coverage was crap and the stewards have more info than us.

you're making a call on maybe 60% of the info. the coverage sucks, you can't call it from your sofa. not this one.

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 22:03

Hamilton lifted in order to wait for MAL.

Why would anyone do that? Wasn't he just saving the tyres so he can use them in the race....

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:03

They are on a slow down lap after the chequered flag. They are saving tyre wear that they need for the race so going slowly and varying course slightly are normal. Pastor was mad he screwed up the chicane and acted like a spolied brat.

lewis had his hand up and appeared to weave at pastor first (after the flag, not on his hot lap).

like i say, you cannot have seen everything because there's no coverage.

  • Pat W27/08/2011 at 22:04

Why would anyone do that? Wasn't he just saving the tyres so he can use them in the race....

To wave at him for blocking

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:04

if lewis does nothing wrong for the rest of the season, he got off scott free, no penalty. it's hardly even a penalty is it?

He did nothing wrong today and got a penalty. Charlie Whiting has already been caught lying to the ICA to penalise him for an incident at Spa a few years ago.

  • Andy Taylor27/08/2011 at 22:04

They are on a slow down lap after the chequered flag. They are saving tyre wear that they need for the race so going slowly and varying course slightly are normal. Pastor was mad he screwed up the chicane and acted like a spolied brat.

Agree completely. They were not racing at this point, Lewis might have been slow, but should not have been a surprise.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:04

Ooh right, i getcha. yeah we have that. I just wish we had the onboard too from Pastor, I find it insane they don't have anything

Get that clip and look at each cars track in reference to the start brackets (painted on the old / alternate start line). I looped it 6-8 times. You see HAM do his first jink then you see MAL clearly cut across to impact.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:04

    Red mist.

Why would he have a red mist having just qualified for Q3?

Have you ever seen a driver with a red mist driving so slowly?

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:05

    He did nothing wrong today.

    says you.

without in car telemetry, without being able to talk to the drivers, without half the info nigel and the stewards have.

according to you lewis hamilton did nothing wrong.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:05

Why would anyone do that? Wasn't he just saving the tyres so he can use them in the race....

In order to hand-wave MAL because MAL (presumably) blocked HAM in to the final chicane. Red mist.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:06

    Lewis did absolutely nothing wrong.

    that.you.saw.

I only saw what happened. He was moving left when he was hit on his right. That says it was not his fault

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 22:06

To wave at him for blocking

Either way. I don't see how there's anything you can do to "provoke" someone into hitting you on purpose.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:07

Have you ever seen a driver with a red mist driving so slowly?

In order to go after another driver, who might have slighted him, yes.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:07

apparently nigel was on the 5live podcast this evening, but i haven't had chance to listen.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:07

Hamilton lifted in order to wait for MAL.

He lifted because the session was over and he wanted to save wear on his tyres because they have worn a lot of inters this weekend. They are supposed to slow down after the flag

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:08

you're making a call on maybe 60% of the info. the coverage sucks, you can't call it from your sofa. not this one.

The coverage is poor but there is plenty information

  • Lukeh27/08/2011 at 22:08

apparently nigel was on the 5live podcast this evening, but i haven't had chance to listen.

Wasn't it Nigel who gave us that really clear, insightful response about stewarding and his role/decisions at a race earlier in the season? Maybe we'll get it again

  • Christine27/08/2011 at 22:08

I only saw what happened. He was moving left when he was hit on his right. That says it was not his fault

For that bit, Maldonado got the penalty. But what happened before is a bit of a mystery.

  • Lukeh27/08/2011 at 22:08

To me the mystery is still why Maldonado was turning left on a kink in the track going right.

  • Pat W27/08/2011 at 22:08

He lifted because the session was over and he wanted to save wear on his tyres because they have worn a lot of inters this weekend. They are supposed to slow down after the flag

I agree with that, but then he saw Maldonado coming and jinked right to wave his fist at him to show him he was annoyed, he was turning back left again when Maldonado side-swiped him for some reason.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:09

    Lewis did absolutely nothing wrong.

Yes, HAM did little wrong (he DID jink to the right, with no contact. He could have been done less but just putting his foot in it and loosing MAL in his dust. I do think a Mclaren is faster than a Williams, no?

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:09

He lifted because the session was over and he wanted to save wear on his tyres because they have worn a lot of inters this weekend. They are supposed to slow down after the flag

You don't need to lift that much.

  • Pat W27/08/2011 at 22:09

I agree with that, but then he saw Maldonado coming and jinked right to wave his fist at him to show him he was annoyed, he was turning back left again when Maldonado side-swiped him for some reason.

I'm not completely sure why that gets Hamilton a penalty, I need that explaining

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:09

without in car telemetry, without being able to talk to the drivers, without half the info nigel and the stewards have.

Talking to the drivers does not do anything other than let the one with the best mouth piece make a better case.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:10

To me the mystery is still why Maldonado was turning left on a kink in the track going right.

Nah, the track curves left from la Source to Eau Rouge... Stop trolling.

  • Lukeh27/08/2011 at 22:10

Nah, the track curves left from la Source to Eau Rouge... Stop trolling.

Huh? It goes right after La Source?

  • Lukeh27/08/2011 at 22:11

Unless Spa has changed it's entire direction in a whole year

  • Christine27/08/2011 at 22:11

Nah, the track curves left from la Source to Eau Rouge... Stop trolling.

    Not acceptable, Bert. Be nice.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:11

    LEFT, slightly.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:12

    LEFT, slightly.

    Woops... right.. slightly.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:13

For that bit, Maldonado got the penalty. But what happened before is a bit of a mystery.

I disagree. Lewis moved slightly right which could have been for any number of reasons like loss of attention due to the low speed, changing settings on his steering wheel, talking on the radio. He then moved left before Maldonado caught him. Once they were level Maldonado drove into him

If anything else happened let the FIA prove it. But they won't because they can't.

Regardless what happened before Maldonado deliberately drove into him and should have been banned for a long time

  • Lukeh27/08/2011 at 22:14

    Woops... right.. slightly.

hehe, I thought I was going mad for a moment :)

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:14

If anything else happened let the FIA prove it. But they won't because they can't.

mclaren could release their telemetry, if they had nothing to hide.

    will they...

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:14

Yes, HAM did little wrong (he DID jink to the right, with no contact. He could have been done less but just putting his foot in it and loosing MAL in his dust. I do think a Mclaren is faster than a Williams, no?

The session was over. It is the rules that you drive slow at that point

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:15

I disagree. Lewis moved slightly right which could have been for any number of reasons like loss of attention due to the low speed, changing settings on his steering wheel, talking on the radio. He then moved left before Maldonado caught him. Once they were level Maldonado drove into him

Yep, I agree that there may be any number of reasons that HAM moved right. But he DID move right, before MAL chopped him.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:15

I agree with that, but then he saw Maldonado coming and jinked right to wave his fist at him to show him he was annoyed, he was turning back left again when Maldonado side-swiped him for some reason.

Alonso was waving his fist earlier in quali. Why doesn't he get a penalty. Or did he wave his arm in a way that didn't cause someone to ram him

  • Christine27/08/2011 at 22:15

Regardless what happened before Maldonado deliberately drove into him and should have been banned for a long time

Sure. Just think they are two distinct things. One was clear, one was not.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:17

mclaren could release their telemetry, if they had nothing to hide.

Are they allowed to. One set of telemetry doesn't prove anything. We know Lewis was going slow and moved right then left. We need to see what Maldonado was doing and overlay it before telemetry tells us anything

  • Jeremy27/08/2011 at 22:17

You all know I'm a Hamilton fan, but I completely take your point that we don't have all the info.

It looked to me, that Lewis started to move to the right (jinked?) then saw another car there, so moved left. When he had no choice but to move to the right to stay on track, Maldonado ran into him deliberately.

Let's hope we get more info. I love juicy F1!

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:17

Yep, I agree that there may be any number of reasons that HAM moved right. But he DID move right, before MAL chopped him.

    He moved right. So?

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:18

The session was over. It is the rules that you drive slow at that point

Yes, you slow. But HAM slowed enough to show that he was looking to confront MAL. If HAM wanted to he could have gone off at 80-90%. I understand the need to conserve tires, etc. IMHO, HAM was looking to get in MALs face.

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 22:18

Alonso was waving his fist earlier in quali. Why doesn't he get a penalty. Or did he wave his arm in a way that didn't cause someone to ram him

    :D

Maybe they just call that Latin passion.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:19

Sure. Just think they are two distinct things. One was clear, one was not.

To me they were both crystal clear from first seeing the incident. In a lot of cases I see something happen and I have to go watch it again to be clear about it. But I had absolutely no doubt about this one and neither did any of the BBC guys who commented on it.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:19

Let's hope we get more info. I love juicy F1!

thought that tony might capture the mclaren data for qually, would show us steering, throttle etc:

    http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/statuses/107577692563582976

he may only record race data though.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:21

Yes, you slow. But HAM slowed enough to show that he was looking to confront MAL. If HAM wanted to he could have gone off at 80-90%. I understand the need to conserve tires, etc. IMHO, HAM was looking to get in MALs face.

I don't see why he would. There were three cars in front of him at the last chicane and none of them blocked him. Maldonado did him a favour by leaving the door open

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:23

I don't see why he would. There were three cars in front of him at the last chicane and none of them blocked him. Maldonado did him a favour by leaving the door open

I agree, MAL was the caboose of a three part train, and the block is borderline. However, MAL could have given more room (i.e. avoided contact) out of the final chicane. Note, I am not a HAM fan, per se.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uC8SOVCfuyw

  • Jeremy27/08/2011 at 22:23

thought that tony might capture the mclaren data for qually, would show us steering, throttle etc:

But that in itself is only a part of the data. We need all the data that the stewards have, including what the drivers have said. We all saw Hamilton 'jink' right, but was it because he wasn't expecting another car to be there?

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:25

But that in itself is only a part of the data. We need all the data that the stewards have, including what the drivers have said. We all saw Hamilton 'jink' right, but was it because he wasn't expecting another car to be there?

agreed, but more info is better than no info. for example did he jink at that point on any other lap during the day?

  • Jeremy27/08/2011 at 22:27

agreed, but more info is better than no info. for example did he jink at that point on any other lap during the day?

Did he start to move to the right at that point on any previous laps? And then have to jink back to the left because another car was there when he wasn't expecting it?

It's actually just a jink to the left

    #rockyhorror

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:27

Just watched the incident again. Maldonado was moving left so fast on a right hand bend that after contact his left side wheels were on the grass. That is cut and dried - unlike the grass

  • Lukeh27/08/2011 at 22:28

    #rockyhorror

let's do the stewards warp agaaaaain!

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:29

I agree, MAL was the caboose of a three part train, and the block is borderline. However, MAL could have given more room (i.e. avoided contact) out of the final chicane. Note, I am not a HAM fan, per se.

He could have avoided contact but the contact was minimal and incidental. Lewis knew stuffing his nose up the inside of him risked a bit of contact

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:29

    another thought for you...

in the post race press conference lewis claimed he never moved, yet we can see that he did. would you consider this a lie?

"He came round me, I didn't move anywhere, and he happened to swipe past me..." - Hamilton

    http://sidepodcast.com/post/belgium-2011-qualifying-highlights#data-13443

maybe lewis lied to the stewards too?

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:29

agreed, but more info is better than no info. for example did he jink at that point on any other lap during the day?

No because he was not going slowly on any other lap

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:29

Just watched the incident again. Maldonado was moving left so fast on a right hand bend that after contact his left side wheels were on the grass. That is cut and dried - unlike the grass

    :)

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:29

No because he was not going slowly on any other lap

    end of q1 and q3?

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 22:29

maybe lewis lied to the stewards too?

    Oh for pitys sake.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:30

He could have avoided contact but the contact was minimal and incidental. Lewis knew stuffing his nose up the inside of him risked a bit of contact

Yeah, I will accept that. But if F1 is a tit-for-tat game, then MAL was justified in swiping HAM, no? (me trolling)

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:30

in the post race press conference lewis claimed he never moved, yet we can see that he did. would you consider this a lie?

I would interpret that as not making a deliberate move.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:30

    Oh for pitys sake.

    it's a fair question?

    "I didn't move anywhere"

    yeah you did.

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 22:32

    yeah you did.

Shuffling a little bit is something every driver does to stay in a roughly straight line surely. It's different to turning a particular direction.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:32

    end of q1 and q3?

Possibly but the conditions in each session were different. Unless we know what caused his jink right the fact that he did it is incidental.

And even if it was deliberate that diid not cause the contact

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:33

Yeah, I will accept that. But if F1 is a tit-for-tat game, then MAL was justified in swiping HAM, no? (me trolling)

I really don't see the logic. Lewis makes a legal overtake that results in slight contact so Maldonado can ram him?

  • Christine27/08/2011 at 22:33

    Oh for pitys sake.

    Be nice.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:33

Shuffling a little bit is something every driver does to stay in a roughly straight line surely. It's different to turning a particular direction.

    everyday he's shuffling?

didn't look like a shuffle, but the camera was miles away. who knows...

    oh yeah, the stewards.

  • Jeremy27/08/2011 at 22:33

    yeah you did.

Did you, Lewis, after Maldonado came along side you, move towards him?

    "I didn't move anywhere"

Argh, that'll be in my head now.

5live don't appear to have a podcast this week. might be tricky to find out what big nigel had to say :(

  • Christine27/08/2011 at 22:34

    He says different here: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/94043

Whether that's because he's had time to watch it back, or think about it, or is just using different words to describe the same thing. Who knows what goes through that boy's mind? :)

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:35

I really don't see the logic. Lewis makes a legal overtake that results in slight contact so Maldonado can ram him?

    My point exactly.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:35

The other question worth asking is why did Maldonado close up right to Lewis's tail like he was slipstreaming him when the session was over and they were going slowly.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:36

I really don't see the logic. Lewis makes a legal overtake that results in slight contact so Maldonado can ram him?

no-one, anywhere is saying what maldonado did was okay?

    no-one.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:36

    My point exactly.

I have no idea what your point is.

  • Jeremy27/08/2011 at 22:38

The debate is whether Lewis deserved a reprimand. Everything else is clear

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:39

no-one, anywhere is saying what maldonado did was okay?

The stewards are saying it was minor avoidable contact that he was slightly more responsible for so got a 5 place penalty. That is very different from saying he did a Schumacher and rammed another driver. At least Schumacher only rammed people during the race. Apart from trying to ram his fist down DC's throat in the pits.

That penalty and their comments do not suggest this is a serious incident. I hope Mansell is in a talkative mood and someone nails him about this tomorrow

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 22:39

no-one, anywhere is saying what maldonado did was okay?

Well the stewards kind of did. A 5 place drop?

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:39

I have no idea what your point is.

two wrongs do not make a right. HAM hitting MAL at the final chicane, even though it was (according to you) "...was minimal and incidental." does justify, in my opinion, a retribution hit to 'make up for it'.

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:40

The debate is whether Lewis deserved a reprimand. Everything else is clear

i agree. i think pastor may have got off more lightly than he otherwise would have, if lewis was provoking him. say avoided a 10 place drop or something else.

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:40

Well the stewards kind of did. A 5 place drop?

I agree. The move merited a serious sit-down time. You NEVER use a car as a weapon.

    Never. Ever!

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:42

The debate is whether Lewis deserved a reprimand. Everything else is clear

Given the complete (ish) evidence, I agree that HAM may not deserve a penalty, but it is borderline. (for me)

  • Jeremy27/08/2011 at 22:42

two wrongs do not make a right. HAM hitting MAL at the final chicane, even though it was (according to you) "...was minimal and incidental." does justify, in my opinion, a retribution hit to 'make up for it'.

Did you mean to type 'doesn't'?

Is there ever mitigation for crashing your car on purpose?

I think Maldonado hit Hamilton at the chicane. At the point of contact Hamilton has made the overtake and is ahead when Maldonado turns into him.

Nothing justifies a driver deliberately driving into another ever.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:42

    Only in NASCAR

    Coulthard's comment live was

"100% Maldonado will have a penalty. He pulls up alongside Lewis and takes a swipe at him. Unacceptable. Maldonado, if he makes the grid on Sunday I will be amazed"

  • Pat W27/08/2011 at 22:44

bttc and a few other categories, surely?

    NASCAR, BTCC, banger racing..

I stopped watching BTCC because of it. But then again a light tap is okay in a tintop and it isn't in an openwheeler because of the open wheels.

I don't count touring cars as motor racing. They have been ramming each other for years and it is considered part of the entertainment to take an opponent out

    Agreed, on both points.

I just think that HAM could have found a way to avoid all this, since he was physically ahead. I f MAL really wanted to, he could have gone straight in to HAM at la Source/ "brake issues"

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:46

So you should you drive in any way other than the way you'd like just in case someone loses the plot and tries to ram you?

Run or fight. HAM could have run.

I just think that HAM could have found a way to avoid all this, since he was physically ahead. I f MAL really wanted to, he could have gone straight in to HAM at la Source/ "brake issues"

Short of evaporating there is nothing Hamilton can do. If anyone can see the iplayer coverage start at 1:40:37. Maldonado is well to the right of the centre of the track and just turned left. He ended up with his left wheels on the grass. On a right hand bend. You don't need telemetry or interviews. That is crystal clear. He should have been banned for the rest of the season

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 22:52

Run or fight. HAM could have run.

    Riiiight.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:53

I just think that HAM could have found a way to avoid all this,

He would have to be psychic and know it was going to happen before he could do anything to avoid it

  • Mr C27/08/2011 at 22:55

He should have been banned for the rest of the season

really? what if he did it to glock or similar?

it's far less than what schumi did to rubens last year and he only got a 10 place drop.

  • Jeremy27/08/2011 at 22:55

He would have to be psychic and know it was going to happen before he could do anything to avoid it

Didn't you hear, Hamilton antagonized Maldonado by junking to the right (or left, I'm not sure) therefore justifying attempted murder with an automobile :P

  • Andy Taylor27/08/2011 at 22:56

it's far less than what schumi did to rubens last year and he only got a 10 place drop.

Well Michael should have been given a much longer ban that one season for that manoeuvre ;)

  • Alison27/08/2011 at 22:56

it's far less than what schumi did to rubens last year and he only got a 10 place drop.

That was a disgrace as well so I guess we shouldn't be surprised... I think they should all be held to a higher standard of behaviour when it comes to driving in a safe manner.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:57

really? what if he did it to glock or similar?

I don't care if he did it to Schumacher. Deliberately ramming another driver should get a ban. I argued that when Senna did it. I argued that when Schumacher did it. Using a car as a weapon should get a long ban

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:57

it's far less than what schumi did to rubens last year and he only got a 10 place drop.

I am sure if you read the comments about that I wanted him banned too

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:58

it's far less than what schumi did to rubens last year and he only got a 10 place drop.

It could be argued that the BAR-MSC incident did not result in an accident, though the potential risk was huge.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 22:59

It could be argued that the BAR-MSC incident did not result in an accident, though the potential risk was huge.

That was a far more serious situation for me and should have received a far more severe penalty

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 22:59

Didn't you hear, Hamilton antagonized Maldonado by junking to the right (or left, I'm not sure) therefore justifying attempted murder with an automobile :P

HAM jinked to the right. I don

  • Jeremy27/08/2011 at 23:00

The stewards agree with you - ten places then, five places this time. Silly so and so's :)

  • Andy Taylor27/08/2011 at 23:01

The stewards agree with you - ten places then, five places this time. Silly so and so's :)

    :D When will they learn?

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 23:01

I would have banned MSC for life and stricken his entired record. But that is just because I think he is a poor sportsman, though I agree he is a great driver.

That would get my vote every time :)

  • Steven Roy27/08/2011 at 23:03

    :D When will they learn?

Easy. When someone dies. It was ever thus in F1

  • Jeremy27/08/2011 at 23:03

HAM jinked to the right. I don

I'm glad we are finally getting to the real issue here, the definition of a 'jink'.

If you move right, then suddenly go left, is it a jink to the right or left? :)

*I'm trying to be funny Bert, I hope it comes across this way

  • Andy Taylor27/08/2011 at 23:05

Easy. When someone dies. It was ever thus in F1

Oh of course, that makes perfect sense. (serious face)

  • Bert27/08/2011 at 23:07

If you move right, then suddenly go left, is it a jink to the right or left? :)

Regarless if it is to the right or the left, I have great difficulty with someone saying that after la Source MAL INITIATED the animosity. HAM did NOT initiate any contact, but he did jink, feign or swerve in MALs direction.

    Yes, sometimes I go overborad.

  • Jeremy27/08/2011 at 23:10

Regarless if it is to the right or the left, I have great difficulty with someone saying that after la Source MAL INITIATED the animosity. HAM did NOT initiate any contact, but he did jink, feign or swerve in MALs direction.

Like I said earlier, I didn't see any animosity in that move when I watched it yesterday - it just looked like he was moving right anyway, and then went left when he saw another car there.

I have to go to work soon, so I don't have time to even attempt to find all the facts (available to us). Hopefully the stewards decision will be further explained at some point in the near future (although I doubt it).
