There's a lot to live up to today as this week we've had some brilliant, brilliant dailies from both old and new daily writers so let's make today as awesome as possible. I elect we rename Friday to Worldwide Day of Awesome, and that every hour on the hour we all get to swig a drink of our choice. Sadly, this may result in many not remembering Worldwide Day of Awesome.
Paddock News
It's good to practise early - With Monaco being Monaco, we of course get free practise a day early on Thursday which kind of makes me feel like I'm writing Saturday's daily (don't worry Mr C, today is DEFINITELY Friday, I double checked and everything). No huge shocks in practise but it's interesting to note the super softs didn't degrade like a crazy roll of toilet paper rolling down a hill. I must day it was fascinating watching the onboards of Alonso yesterday, the man is a beast around the streets of Monte Carlo.
Row row row Your Lotus Boat, gently down the Lotus River - It seems that today, live on pay per view, in a cage match, Danny Bahar and Tony Fernandes will finally fight it out for the crown of 'Absolute Proper Lotus, Honest Guv' of the world. Sadly, the only bit of this that is true is the fact we'll be hearing the court decision on the Lotus diddlywash nonsense. Not even the letters L, O, T, U or S in this daily are proper Lotus, you know.
Forklift Me Up, higher and higher - In a shocking twist down at the Monte Carlo harbour, it's come to our attention that former World Champion and previous Monaco Grand Prix race winner Jenson Button was nearly maliciously bumped into by a forklift, powering along at almost lethal speeds of a few miles per hour. Whilst Jenson was strong enough to survive this mad bump of utter bumpness, it is believed Colin Kolles is looking at signing up this unknown forklift rookie following the speed it offered.
Elsewhere...
You Just Too Good to Be GP2, Can't Take my Eyes Off You - You guys just have to watch this video of GP2 qualifying yesterday. We wondered why Will Buxton was proper hulking up in anger yesterday on Twitter at qualifying but there are truly no words for how lax and quite shocking the performances are from the GP2 field here. Grosjean's crash on his own team mate is all kinds of mental! Scary though. But it seems a load of penalties have been handed out. No word yet if everyone has to retake their driving test. I say yes. But blindfolded this time.
How I wish, How I Wish You were Here - Not-sure-if-they're-Lotus-till-the-court-battle Renault GP uploaded a bunch of pictures from the world of Monte Carlo, that lovely world that seems so far away and I want to just escape to and possibly lick to make sure it tastes as good as it looks. Maybe not the final part. But these photos just looking at the surroundings just make me wanna head right there and just gawp at everything in utter amazement. My local council estate isn't as pretty see, but hey, we have a pier too. Sure, it's a muddy hole, and it is in the middle of a field, and it has a shoe in it, but let's not be specific here.
Formula One, One One in the Sun, Sun Sun - I would never have thought that Danny John Jules, or whom most of you may know as Cat from the awesome Red Dwarf, would be such an epic motorsport geek but I loved his guest post here for Badger GP. The guy seems a huge, huge Moto GP fan and there's some fabulous photos in there with some big name stars from the world of motorsport too but it's a good little read. The man knows his stuff too without a doubt. Maybe we'll see the Carbug get a bit of KERS and DRS when the series returns...
The continued scary aftermath of nature's power - Nature never seems to amaze me for what it can do but this is most certainly not a good thing at times. These photos from the Big Picture show the aftermath of the Joplin tornadoes that had been brutally striking the area and it left me at a loss of words at how much destruction it had caused. My thoughts are truly with everyone affected by the disaster and hope that they recover as a community as soon as they can.
Itty Bitty Links
I've decided to end my dailies now with just itty bitty little links not related to motorsport or blogging but just to throw them in there anyways to share, hopefully they'll be as interesting to you guys as they are to me!
- Real Life Pip Boy from the Fallout series - There are no words to fathom how immense this is. Made from an iPhone, if you've ever played the Fallout games (don't even get me started) you'll surely be suitable amazed
- Back to the Future Quiz - I only managed to get 3/10. Must do better next time. Share your results in the comments!
- BBC profiling the legend that is Park Ji Sung - It's the Champions League final tomorrow and I'm well excited for it, so this little video about Man Utd midfielder/all round legend Ji Sung Park is a nice look at his career
- Kim Clijster's Wondershot - We saw this live yesterday during the French Open and it was AWESOME. Kim totally meant it.
- Hitchicker's Guide coming to consoles alike - This is most awesome, especially as I quite like Hothead Games so fingers crossed it'll be worth grabbing our towels and thanking for all the fish!
- A bit of interactive music gaming
- Cats and Dogs in similar drinking method shocker
- christine posted this in the comments last night and it is just so addictive. Time to get competitive people - my best score was 6700!
- I love it when scientists prove something that should be blatantly obvious. This has rocked my simple world.
And that's that for another week. It's actually quite a big day for me today as it's my last day at my job I've been meaning to escape for ages and ages, so it's a bit wierd but also exciting too. Remember there's no practise session today so head out and have a fabulous Friday before we have another exciting weekend of the most glamorous weekend of the F1 Calendar. Until they announce the Grand Prix of Newport, of course. That goes without saying. Until then, I'll see you in the comments!
hellooo!
I got 3 of my 10 Olympics tickets so I am happy enough but now I start hoping that other people decide not to proceed with their allocations thus freeing up more tickets for me to buy in June in the first-come-first-served sale :D
Ooh well done, how did you find out? I've not had any notification or money taken..
Or rather how did you find out the number of tickets
our ballot is working opposite to yours in that we got told what we've been assigned and then we have to pay for them, rather than paying first and then being told.
They still haven't sent me an email but I noticed someone tweeting that their American relatives had their tickets and the same company doing the American ballots is doing ours so I logged into my account and wallah, $370 of tickets out of $1300 applied for. Gives me lots to spend in the later sale but I don't want to buy rubbish events just for the sake of going to the Olympics, I'm already happy enough that I get to sit on Centre Court at Wimbledon once.
Ah I see.
More to spend on other London attractions. Or not. :)
do you know what events?
been there done that :D
I am kind of shocked I got a swimming ticket because swimming is sooo popular but on the other hand I can't believe I missed out on rowing.
2x tennis (one ground pass, one centre court) and 1x swimming
I think I may be the only person on earth who didn't apply for Olympic tickets.
hope you haven't got my seats :-)
maybe you've got my seats in there for the following day that I wanted :D
ah... since I wanted the very last day...
Me neither
it was cheaper than wimbledon frankly
I haven't applied for any either.
thats one of the days I wanted too! I got the day before though with the womens singles and mens doubles final so I'm happy with that. I just wanted to be greedy and get both :)
okay, so it's just me and Amy... so what has all the fuss been about?
That's that theory quickly and effectively blown out of the water then.
In my case, several things put me off applying.
that's not a bad ticket to end up with is it? :-)
not in the slightest. My original plan back in the day was to only go to tennis so I is very happy. I will be most happy if Switzerland win the doubles again.
Now I just need the FIA calendar to see if I can wedge a race into my trip.
I believe Hungary happens towards the start of the Olympics.
Rowing is pretty popular here, at least for the Olympics..
its popular but they must be able to fit heaps of spectators in compared to other venues

A long weekend of sport with races on Friday and Monday too..
How am I supposed to find time to watch the PGA at Wentworth? :)
game entry done!
Cheers, I was just sending the email reminders
Now I sleep. Free practices sucked my evening away!
probably best to just shout at me if you see me on spc. i'm terrible at checking email on fridays - I leave it all to monday
I send them Thursday so people have a chance to check them during the day, but by Friday night I switch to commenting or tweeting at people.
night Pat
Just got a message from my friend, she is really upset as she got no Olympics tickets at all and she applied for random stuff like table tennis
I guess a lot of it is down to luck
looks that way. Maybe it helps that I only applied for one of everything too, whereas she applied for pairs of tickets.
I assumed they would be selling pairs rather than singles
they sell as many as you apply for, but in lots of events the max you could apply for was 2 anyway.
From going to concerts I learned going alone sometimes helps as when theres random spare seats all by themselves they can slot you in there.
some stats: they had 9,530 tickets available and had 49,285 requests.
Only 5.59% of swimming applications were confirmed. 0.25% of opening ceremony applications were.
9,530 doesn't sound like much considering this company had the tickets for the USA, Canada, Australia, and about 10 EU countries.

So are all the tickets assigned now?
they are if you live in Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Norway, Sweden or the USA.
I am feeling very lucky with my 3 tickets based on other Aussies I'm seeing on twitter.
morning folks
Have you guys seen XKCD this morning? It's awesome! http://xkcd.com/904/
ex flattie appears to be stalking on my behalf, she just wrote on my facebook
So I think I saw your husband riding his scooter last night... took a very drunk blurry photo of him walking with his helmet. No practise today so he must have been out and about. Just in case you were keeping tabs on him.
I don't know who she thinks my husband is. I presume Heikki but I couldn't be sure!
I am always amazed how the tickets are handled at these huge events. It is the same everytime, initial shortage of tickets and at the end many people simply turn out and get to the events ... I know several people with no special connections who got easy access to World Cup games they wanted, Olympics (excluding the opening and closing ceremonies though) etc ... No idea how this all works.
I remember one of early Chinese GPs when it still was really hard to get good seats. I worked hard to get us bunch of seats where we wanted half a year ahead of race, one friend who made last minute decision simply turned up, bought ticket at the box office and got seat 10 metres away from us ...
Ah for a second there I thought I'd missed out.
None of my other British friends who are trying to go have been charged yet but thats about 4 people so possibly not a good sample size :D
I guess thats like me at the tennis this year when my friend bought on the first day and ended up two rows from the back and I bought about 4 days before the match and got the 8th row. The annoying thing was I had an empty seat beside me the whole match that she could have used but she was with her brother and they wouldn't both fit
Wait?!?! You have other British friends ;)
I'll understand if you don't want to see me anymore.
Giggles is over capacity ;)
So, how is everyone today?
Great! It's a Friday, I'm in a good mood and I have poker later (and a planned viewing of Truth in24) :)
I am great too, work is over, tennis is about to start, I have another ice cream and I will possibly be on an Olympics high for a bit longer.
Sweet. I'm going to my flatmate's art showcase debut after work.
:)
Have you checked out Øresund Space Collective yet? http://www.myspace.com/oresundspacecollective
I'll have a look at lunch - am in work at the minute, so can't go to MySpace
fair enough. I had a listen to part of the CD I was given last night and I did enjoy it.
In the meantime;
Parc Ferme, Episode 2 with Pippa Mann - http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/parc-ferme-episode-2-with-pippa-mann/
Excellent!
Djokovic v Delpo, thats a must see. Of course it has to be the last match up so it'll be on at god knows what hour :)
You had audio issues too? Jon Waldock tried to interview her and had similar problems...
14 degrees in Paris, it was warmer than that here today!
ooooh
missed this one, I had a question you could have asked
Yep – finally put together inserts and half a proper theme for the intro / outro.
Aye – the connection was a bit ropey during the call unfortunately. I cleaned it up as much as I could, but there’s not a whole lot one can do when the interference drifts across the vocal range.
Shame - who knows, maybe I got it?
Ping... 1961: Moss’s Monaco http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=6824
Morning all.
What news?
What word?
Most amused by this:
http://www.popbitch.com/home/2011/03/17/withnail-and-i-vs-star-wars-utterly-brilliant/
[language alert!]
Not much on the newsfront. Interviews and podcasts sorted. Quiet time now for a few weeks, before I hit the road again.
How does Mr Stuart C be?
Been a busy couple of weeks. Back from holiday, three days on Evo, then working most of the weekend... Mrs C not especially happy!
I assume you're not in rally-ville?
;)
Final straw was last night when I was doing the live text for Rally Argentina. Was supposed to kick off at 7pm our time, but it started late and they ran in reverse order so the Loebs of this world weren't on until almost 10. I am not popular.
Fortunately one of the cats brought a mouse in and loudly announced the fact at 3.45am, which caused some irk displacement.
Yes and no. Doing this one from the front room...
More hilarity:
http://bit.ly/mqR9Rw
Ughhh... annoying. Won't catch up with it until next week - there's just too much going down this weekend.
Still, 3.45am though.
Alittle less travel, I suppose
Well, indeed. Long plane trips aren't agreeing with my back at the moment.
I wish iPods, et al, were invented earlier. Back when I was going to the US every couple of weeks to do the ALMS magazine, you were ultra-lucky if you got on a plane with a seat-back video and more than a couple of films on offer. I remember one year resorting to watching the X Men in Chinese.
Compare and contrast with my recent EasyJet flight to Jordan where the fellow next to me was watching The Wire on his iPad.
That sounds like quite an experience.
Sounds like fun
I normally have something on my MacBook to switch on during flights
Loving that video (apart from commentator's reference to "Jack Bray-bum".
Depends on battery life I suppose.
That makes me laugh every time
GP2 is sounding like fun this morning, will have to catch that later on
More crashing?
yes, and penalties galore
and Grosjean started 26th - apparently he's now 2nd. at Monaco.
I just got an email from my university telling me as part of their regular maintenance they're going to dispose of my email account because they're only for current students.
Not sure how regular that maintenance actually is, I graduated four years ago.
mine forgot to delete mine the first time I left and i just continued with it when I returned to the same place
the second time i left it was deleted at midnight of my last day (thanks, and I miss you too!)
I am watching this Stosur match. Wasn't she a finalist last year? Struggling today.
Watda?!
#nothere
Goodness.
I am not watching it because for some reason Australian TV is showing Schiavone. I know shes the defending champ but Australian TV is normally so into their own players that you wouldn't even know theres others in the tournament.
down to 4th after pitstops...
They must be in denial. She's about to lose the first set.
oh I lie, now shes on my telly. Fox Sports must have realised she's losing.
I like Gisela but only when shes playing doubles. Go Sam!
Do you think they are embarrassed that they came in basically the same outfit?
Bleh. Doing my expenses for the six months to January. Hateful.
Busy few months!
That qualifying session highlights reel exposed some of the most shockingly poor driving I've seen in a very long time - just embarrassing. Nothing but embarrassing
It's actually an improvement by Lacoste for them to be wearing different colours! Normally they go with one shade for everyone which sucks.
In those cases you have to hope that one of them is wearing a hat
Although we did learn that it's The Judy's pet hate :D http://twitter.com/#!/judmoo/status/72266851467538432
I imagine the stylist will get a rocket.
The hell of it all is separating out what's gone on the company credit card from what I've put on my own in a misplaced cashback-grab, plus what I've paid for with my debit card because so many places these days stiff you for an admin fee if you pay by anything other than debit card.
I can see why! It's like painting all the F1 cars the same colour.
Stuart... Maybe a little too late for this occasion but lots of people have recommended this to me: http://www.getharvest.com/
It's a time tracker and invoicer but the neat thing is you can take pictures of recipts and assign them with your iPhone / Android phone etc. http://www.getharvest.com/features/expenses
I think tennis players make things difficult on purpose, the other day when Wozniacki played Wozniak they had to turn the 3 letter abbreviation of their names into 4 letter ones :)
Officially the oddest thing I've seen in a very long time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeNPNK1OLTo
I saw highlights of that one. Mr C said: "Haha, Wozniak, like Steve." And I was all, "No dear, it's Wozniacki."
Who knew there were two of them?
The other day there were two chaps playing who had the same initial and surname. The umpire had to call them by their first names :)
Fab - ta!
Just been massively busy this year so have had no time to sort out essential admin stuff.
They should make it like acting, where you can't have the same name as someone else and if you do you have to change it.
Good thing tennis doesn't have to deal with the Andretti clan - at one point, there was Mario, Michael, John, Jeff and Aldo all racing at the same time.
I also enjoy when Ferrer plays Ferrero
Also this freshbooks that everyone's been talking about is great for doing your accounts: http://www.freshbooks.com/
I think you'd really need to use them both though, shame it isn't just one thing.
I always like things, like the harvest thing, there where it makes it easier than not doing it. I mean right now you keep the recipt and put it somewhere and everything. If you could take a picture, tag it and then throw it in the bin that seems easier than the alternative :)
what name would you choose, under this scenario?
Good luck!
I'd be either John Smith or David C Brooks - just because I can.
Mine got deleted at the end of the month I graduated - they couldn't do it any earlier in case some people needed to resit modules. However, anyone who stayed on for postgraduate studies (nobody in my department, but the entire university was under the same regime) lost their account until the start of their postgraduate course.
Me? I'd change my name to something like Whyman, so the three letters spell WHY.
something that spells WHO
Yes!
I'd be Michael Hfuhruhurr (poor umpires)
I'd like mine to spell WIN for the good omen.
Genius.
people tweet about GP2 all night, then they tweet the start, the crashed and then go silent when it comes to tell us how it all ended ...
back in the olden days when video games would only ever let you put in 3 letters for your high score AMY was a good name to have.
I think that's reserved for Matt Smith at the minute, although he also gets this registration plate.
http://freespace.virgin.net/dr.dean/who1/otherappearances/3b_02.jpg
Much better than Christine.
and when I say that tweets wake up :-)
Hehe, useless :) This might help: http://twitter.com/eddstrawF1/status/74057423811379201
You really can't shorten that to three. My brother always went for PAL. Who really needs that U anyway?
you could have SPC
Good point. And MRC is sorted too.
Tony 1, Dany 0. A good omen for today's ruling, maybe? :)
was just thinking exactly that
Hehee...
That result hurts Bianchi a bit though
My brother and I had nicknames when we were little specifically because of how short high score tables were. Usually they seemed to allow at least 4 letters, so we ended up picking "Mega" (me) and "Cool" (my brother).
the Lotus moment of truth is not far away, would be fun if the judge orders one of parties to immediately change their F1 cars branding, would make for interesting Friday night in one of the garages in Monaco :-)
this too: http://twitter.com/#!/AnnaTeamLotus/status/74057384733061120
Won't happen. The loser will appeal
a good summary
I know, I was in the "if" land for a while :-)
Also, it's about time Davide Valsecchi got his head in gear. That was coming far too long.
:D More: http://twitter.com/#!/AnnaTeamLotus/status/74058117356322816
Team AirAsia are also ahead of ART in the constructors.
I hope not, not when we have a judge who likes to drag things out so that he can have a bit of the Monaco limelight
But what about DAMS?
;)
first of many wins today? or just generally? :-)
now if the Gascoine troops could replicate that ... unfortunately they have to build their own car ...
everytime I see female tennis players I realise just how stumpy my legs are.
;) They're actually ahead of DAMS now, too. :D
Stosur is doing better now. It must be because Australia started watching.
Just to add to the confusion
That must be it.
It's tough when you have to drop the first set just to get your home country to watch
Thankfully, weather for the Indy 500 is to be nice and sunny
:)
Schiavone wins because Peng cried then retired. Wonder what was wrong.
Leigh, your podcast was really good - you have a great speaking voice too.
That's awkward.
dehydration from the tears?
Cheers Gavin,
much appreciated
:)
Commentators think she may have been feeling ill, fans will never be able to read her story :D
Those ball people must get orange knees.
thats what I hate about clay, the players socks and shoes get so dirty and I think 'a new pair of shoes for every match seems excessive'
I mean, they get a new pair at every other tournament too but I think about it more on clay :)
Great Jake stuff: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/2011/05/behind_the_glitz_and_glamour_o.html
Oooh. I was wondering if he was going to write one this week...
Ohhhhhh...Kaaaaayyyy..... Just listening to More Front Wing's podcast with Gordon Johncock.
Yikes. If anyone ever wants a lesson in bitterness, it's worth a listen. Lots and lots of awkward silences from Steph and Paul...
He also went on a drawn out rant about "them foreigner's in our racing". Yeahhhhhhh....
Is he talking about an international-level series or not?
Sorry - US. He's a twice Indy 500 winner.
My point is that if he's on about an international series, surely he should expect "them foreigner's in our racing". That's kind of the point, that foreigners end up involved...
A twice winner of the Indy 500 bitter? Sad...
True, but Johncock is really a leftover from the 60's-80's and it really, really comes through. Just really sad, but a painfully awkward listen as well.
You can tell from Steph's voice at the end that she has this kind of "thank **** that's over" sound in her voice.
ooh I dozed off there and now shes losing again.
You seem to have the opposite effect today than you did yesterday.
you really let her down
thats really gotta hurt Sams ranking
I quite like that Dulko lady. Although she did leave her racquet for a ball person to pick up. Litterbug.
her and Flavia Pennetta are the cutest doubles ladies ever. They won the Australian Open this year :D
Roger Federer on TV next. I've heard of him.
:D
aww I don't like when he plays Tipsy, I love Tipsy and don't like wishing for him to lose
I'm having fun watching the tennis but listening to the cricket commentary
Rather disappointing, especially when you remember two Brits won the Indy 500 in the 60s...
As have a few other billion people. ;)
One of whom won on the year of Johncock's debut too
Sorry Gordon, the only reason I started watching the Indy 500 was because Mansell went there...
And then came Dennis Vitolo...
:D
Oi!
Sorry - couldn't help myself
:)
You raise a good point though - the talented, famous European knocked out by the American Amateur the romantics so want in the sport...
Roger should definitely stay off the booze before matches
Such an awful driver.
:D
So I hear.
stay away from paris, rain!
I remember when I watched CART in the 90's, I couldn't help but think "what is he doing?"

Roger is making this slam look a whole lot easier than Rafa is.
The commentators were complaining they couldn't find anything bad to say about Roger. He's not helping!
He was saying the other day that he wants to get a full size replica of the Coupe des Mousquetaires because they only give winners a tiny wee one.
"I'm going to do it, no matter the price. I fought for so many years to have the Coupe Des Mousquetaires Cup, and I only got this tiny one."
<3 not that price is probably an issue for him :D
The good thing about this years slam is its now two years since Rog won so they don't replay match point in every break of play. I think I've seen it 200 times and it always makes me tear up. So happpppppy.
What is up with all the pink and green. I thought that pink and green should never be seen.
it's Adidas being boring, they were all wearing that at the Australian. I get mad when companies bring the same collection to more than one slam.
I do also own the pink and green shorts from that collection and I've worn them once because I don't actally wear pink. The shorts...they just spoke to me...
Andrew Castle just said that woman who was crying earlier against Schiavone had "tummy trouble." Because she is six years old, apparently.
:D
Well, at least one person is hopeful

Lotus 1, Lotus 1... looks like going to a replay
http://www.lotuscars.com/news/en/naming-dispute
Ouch
The Judge also found that Team Lotus has the right to continue to race in Formula 1 under the name Team Lotus but the effect of the Judgment is that only Group Lotus can use the name “Lotus” on its own in F1
ahahahaha. When I say "Lotus" I certainly don't mean Group. And I say it a lot.
I think I might just not say it ever again.
Team Heikki.
Team Heikki. Team Petrov.
Sorted.
Team Lotus and Renault it is then
Tony thinks he's won too.
We won. I'm over the moon. Team lotus belongs to us. Our chasis name stays lotus. No one can use the chasis name. We are the only lotus. Team lotus
You'd swear it was all for nothing...
Group Lotus is concerned that this aspect of the Judgment will cause confusion in the eyes of spectators and the wider public. Accordingly, Group Lotus is seeking leave to appeal so that the right to use the Lotus brand in Formula 1 is clarified once and for all in the interests of the sport and the fans.
For the fans. Yup.
Hahahaa....
We have already clarified it... see "Team Lotus and Renault it is" comment
Hope they don't go ahead and un-clarify it for "the fans"
Woz isn't doing too well.
On reassessment, I think Fernandes probably edged it in injury time.
it read to me like 'hey group lotus, you guys are better in every way and they breached their agreement, but we're going to let them keep calling themselves team lotus anyway' which confused me.
Really not!
one of the journos tweeted to say something like her last match was her 47th win of the year and last year she didn't rack up 47 til August. That may just be because she never stops playing. Most players do 17-19 tournaments a year, lord knows how many shes doing because shes played something stupid like 11 weeks without a break. She seems to hold on to her #1 with quantity over quality.
but you have to look through the Lotus Group spin to their press release
Hmm, he did say she was fed up with questions about being number one without having won a slam.
actually http://www.wtatennis.com/page/RankingsSingles/0,,12781~0~1~100,00.html says lots of others are playing more than her #sorryCaro
it's Lotus Group who are keen to appeal the decision - some win!
true
also true.
I love that Serena is still in the top 20 and she hasn't played since Wimbledon last year.
commentary is speculating that Caro doesn't win slams because its the only time of the year her dads not allowed to come on court and coach her in between games
Ping: Lotus: And the winner is...? http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=6823
gooo Dani!
Goodness!
only the 3rd round and the top two womens seeds are both out. Ahh ladies tennis, I don't enjoy you much.

wahhh I've been waiting all year for a hoody and they're not on there for sale :(
they're in a naming rights dispute with a Mr T L Hoody
oooh I really want the trainers. I'd love to go running in Team Lotus shoes!
they've had merchandise at the races though, I wonder why thats different.
were they available at silverstone?
we haven't raced there yet!
oh yes (oops)
but obviously buying online makes it available in uk were the hearing was taking place, so wonder if it connected to that
although gp circuits seem to be a law unto themselves half the time anyway
FOTA are planning more fan forums
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/91769
will that be Renault's opportunity to clarify with the fans who they really are?
my brother has decided to start running with the aim of doing a half marathon.
This running thing seems to be infectious :)
flatmate has reported back to say that she thinks it was Heikki. I will await her photos before confirming a successful stalking mission.
Ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/team-lotus-and-lotus-renault-court-case-ruling-announced
Watch Brundle carefully say Team Lotus. :D Related question: The chassis name is Lotus - won't they have to modify it to a Team Lotus chassis?
Not sure if they could up until now
Given that Group Lotus have appealed, that will inadvertently have bought Team Lotus some time to sort that out. Given that they will just append the word 'Team' to the chassis name if they need to do so, there should be no problem doing that next season. But I do wonder what they'll do if they're forced to change it this season.
So basically the judge found that everyone was entitled to use the full version of what they wanted to use alongside the liveries each of them currently uses, and that Renault is also entitled to call itself Lotus on its own?
Looks like it.
The judge could've summed it up in three words: as you were. :D
Yup! :)
At the end of the season, yes. They can't do it until then unless every other team agrees - which should be feasible now.
They'll point out that they need the agreement of every other team in the pit lane to do the change, otherwise they're obliged to keep the name they already have.
Reading Adam C's post on the matter:
http://adamcooperf1.com/2011/05/27/group-lotus-also-retains-right-to-use-name-in-f1/
It seems the biggest loser of all was David Hunt. TLVL's license on the Team Lotus name was revoked, but both TL and GL covered that base by applying for the trademark as well. The judge ruled in favor of TL in that application. So TL gets the name without having to pay David Hunt because he doesn't own the name anymore. Did I get that right?
A professional player so in love with her sport that she can't stop competing in it even for a moment. I approve :)
Sounds like it.
Brilliant solution :D
According to Fernandes, they don't need to, they're allowed to call it Lotus
But the court said only Group Lotus can call it Lotus on its own, right?
Yep - Fernandes' squad have to be called "Team Lotus"
http://adamcooperf1.com/2011/05/27/4114/
Ferrari is keen to return to Bahrain?? Yikes - good luck to Whitmarsh at the FOTA meeting.
That said, Delhi need the extra time? I thought they were ahead of schedule?
depends how you look at it, the chassis name is "Lotus T128" which isn't Lotus on its own
But isn't T128 just the designation?
wasn't "Team"? :-)
Team Lotus has the right to use Lotus in F1 (and only in F1). In theory, both sides could still use Lotus in F1 but in practise precedence has been established for Team Lotus in that specific arena. Given the line Group Lotus' thoughts are taking, they will either remove that right from Team Lotus under appeal or go for something not easily mistaken for plain Lotus in their naming procedure. For example, they could call it "Lotus Group Premier Racing" and even keep the acronym (LRGP) they use now...
Of course I could just have confused myself there.
This will be a tangle. Interesting to note, though, that Group Lotus legal referred to Team Lotus as Team Lotus (and not 1Malaysia) in their press statement.
It's not, but if Group Lotus argued it could be mistaken for "Lotus" chassis name and "T128" as the model name (which as far as I know is the truth), there could be another court case forcing the issue.
either way, I don't think the ruling applies to the chassis name as such, it's a branding issue. they can't have merchandising saying "Lotus" but they could have it saying "Lotus T128"
don't think they could argue that - they're not selling Lotus chassis
Sounds like they've gone for "Team Lotus"...
They're not. They're selling merchandising based on the chassis. It might make a difference... ...but it might not.
Lotus Group's argument would be weakened by the fact their chassis carries Renault's designation
shouldn't make a difference, the team could in effect be called "Lotus" as long as they didn't go around calling themselves "Lotus". If that sounds weird, well they're already called 1Malaysia and calling themselves Team Lotus
Just ordered a book and CD to help me try to cover the content of Level 2 Italian over the summer (I've been advised to do the GCSE for it next year, I'm not sure I'm ready to skip a whole level yet but I may get no choice in the matter depending on what my college does).
do you know what that's based on? Adam Cooper asked Bernie and Bernie just smiled at him in response.
:D
"The FIA’s end of year meetings – including the F1 prizegiving involving the top three drivers – is due to take place in Delhi the week before the proposed new date…"
Seb and Red Bull better hurry up and get the season wrapped up then :-)
:D So far, so good there.
That's an immovable feast, but in the scale of immovable feasts, it's pretty low on the list.
Alia, how would you read this paragraph?
oh, here's Clause 10.2.
With difficulty given that it is a humungous block of unbroken text :D
:D OK, I'll pick a specific sentence.
Hello. Just in from work, I believe there is an Indy Lights race soon.
Wow... so they can both use it as they were before? Just that now there are defined parameters for use. Very legal-ese wording. :)
Er.. does that mean GL cannot make an IndyCar aero kit?
Sounds like it!
My point exactly. It looks like GL may be worse off than when they started.
This is all from the 1985 agreement, right? It's not new.
Reading though that it sounds like Ferandes can use TEAM LOTUS wherever he wants so long as he doesnt just call it lotus?
From his tweets it sounds like all those green and cold logos on the renaults may have to come off tomorrow
December 11th for the indian GP? http://adamcooperf1.com/2011/05/27/4114/
Even I think thats a little mad! http://adamcooperf1.com/2011/05/27/4114/
Good point. Missed to see that in the search. What I'm trying to figure is if this still stands.
no idea what to believe from Adam Cooper today, his Bernie "quote" is laughable
Indy Lights (Indy GP2) live here from Indianapolis within minutes
http://sports2pc.com/channel/5019/none/others/Racing--The-95th-Indianapolis-500
More seriously, I read it as:
- Group Lotus thinks Team Lotus can use the ABCB monogram in any context (which for me is unexpected as I expected it to stay with the Lotus Group, perhaps with a goodwill licence for F1 purposes to Team Lotus)
- Team Lotus thinks Group Lotus can use "Lotus", "Group Lotus" and the Lotus logo.
- If and only if the agreement is broken, it may only use them in association with another entity (so it would have to be called "X (Group) Lotus" or "(Group) Lotus X")
- Subject to clause 10.2, without the agreement being broken, any use of "Group Lotus" or "Lotus" in conjunction with another entity must be with notice provided to Team Lotus. That notice must indicate the name to be used, which cannot be "Lotus", "Team Lotus" or a translation thereof.
- Team Lotus must be called "Team Lotus" - it cannot call itself anything else, unless "Lotus" is not involved in the alternative name.
- Group Lotus is defined as primarily a manufacturer and consultancy
- It is forbidden to provide its services to any high-level racing series unless it owns at least 15% of the organisation to which it provides services (so no more providing customer KERS or engines to Red Bull, for example...)
On sober reflection, that sentence is the sentence I think the judge might not have completely thought through. This team is no longer permitted to supply customer components to other teams - even ones otherwise unaffected by this naming issue.
It can if it only provides it to teams it owns 15% of. So a limited-circulation aero kit, maybe?
Not totally sure here - it seems the case acknowledges they have different roundels and they can keep using their respective roundels.
Sorry, Alia, it's from the 1985 agreement, not the actual decision.
Reading other statements im not so sure,
Alianora, Can Group lotus use the roundall logos on the renaults, or just the word Lotus
Ah, OK.
They are the same though aside from the small print
It can use the Lotus logo but not the Clive Chapman one.
From the decision itself:
Re: IndyCar - the judge seems only to be dealing with the use of the Lotus name in F1, so any GL activities in IndyCar should be in the clear.
Interesting...
I wonder what these tweets were about then?
"Incredible spin by group lotus. Amazing how they can turn a huge loss. With this judgement there is no holding me back now and we will enforce with full force."
"More statements coming from us and we will now seek clarity from the sporting regulators."
"If group lotus won. Why do they want to appeal. We are very happy with the judgement. Now watch us enforce."
http://twitter.com/#!/tonyfernandes
Ending the title sponsorship perhaps?
I haven't done much reading so I don't know what they classify as 'Class A'.
Interesting though, that both can still use the name.
That came from the 1985 agreement, which the judge says has already expired.
Lots of reading to do http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Ch/2011/1366.html
Lots of close pack racing so far, a few lead changes. Lap 10 of 40, yellow for someone in the wall.
Mr Tremayne was involved?!
Indeed - on TL's side too. No surprise, then, that Joe has been a big TL supporter.
Doug Nye was also called to the stand for GL.
GL can use the Lotus roundel but not the Team Lotus roundel
Crikey
The Team Lotus one being what I've been calling the Clive Chapman logo (otherwise I get confused, particularly as I don't know the difference between a logo and a roundel).
If that seems like a lot, here's a link to the conclusions.
I think they mean using the Team Lotus name. The judgment says nothing about GL having to end sponsorship with Renault. The decision notes:
Lotus Group said they won the key points in their press release
actually all they've really won is that they were fine to end the Lotus Racing contract as 1malaysia breached the merchandising agreement
The implications for Lotus Jetalliance in LMS are interesting...
implications for ever owning an F1 team rather than sponsoring?
well, that second point is where GL lost today
I think they should be clear. It does make it difficult for Team Lotus to enter sports car racing, though.
Implications for what happens to the team if Lotus ever loses its sponsor. Without the sponsor it would be "Lotus", which it can't use on its own if LMS is considered "A-class racing".
Or I was until I discovered LMS is considered "B-class racing" on the grounds that the cars have multiple seats.
Why? the judgement sounds like they have an open field to do what they like as long as they are Called 'Team Lotus' & not just 'Lotus'
It should be OK provided it calls itself "Team Lotus", only does one class of one series and doesn't supply more than one customer team (it has a limit of 12 B-class racers imposed upon it).
From the decision:
Simply put, it would be much more likely for there to be confusion if TL raced sports cars, as it's too similar to GL's business.
It's allowed to make 12 B-class racing vehicles and it is allowed to compete in B-class racing as "Team Lotus". It just can't race as anything else, unless the something else doesn't include Lotus at all.
Afternoon all
I think I'm now ready for the weekend to begin
are we getting the judgement and the 1985 agreement mixed up?
Mr C: Did you see this awesome Garage Band guitar solo on the iPad?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_KYUF6pxR8&feature=player_embedded
I think so, yes. Argh.
Thanks to Bert for clearing that up, BTW.
Malbec, good choice. Don't know the other one.
Montepulciano is one of the Super Tuscans, if you like Chianti, you'll get the idea. Deep, classic Italian Red
Sounds good
You have to wonder as to what Gennii's position is,
As a P.E. Firm surely they will want to sell out, if lotus aren't allowed to buy it, will they look for a new sponsor after the current agreement?
very nice
I've got a bottle of Amarone with my name on it for this weekend
I'm taking this from today's judgement, which appears to have upheld a slightly updated version of the 1985 agreement.
I've also got some Pear Cider and some bottles for tomorrow's BBQ which is now Roast Beef due inclement weather
weirdly absent from everything aren't they? even the judge seems to think the team is Renault
Is this breakout thread worthy, I'm just catching up so not sure how big it is

Good afternoon everyone :)
Good afternoon!
I've just uploaded the pictures I took during the Spanish GP to Facebook.
Here are them :) (the camera was not very good, hehe) http://on.fb.me/mgYjZt
Ooh great
You saw a lot of the track
Yes! That's because on Friday we could go to any grandstand we wanted :) But on Saturday and Sunday we had to stay in our seats.
That really seems to be becoming a practice now across the circuits, and that can only be a good thing.
Cool, will look now
ow... he hit hard
Yes, and I am happy, because in FP1 and FP2 there's never enough people to fill a Grandstand or a Pelouse, so if there are no problems, that's a good way to encourage people to buy better tickets for the following year.
In fact, I am considering the possibility of buying a ticket in the Main Grandstand... Toooooo much sun where I were.
Blimey, that is scary. Also, those cars are funnylooking.
Time for bed. Last link today from Joe.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/thought-on-the-lotus-judgement/
What a mess, indeed. Good night folks.
I like them. For the shadow pics, just take the settings away from Automatic and they'll improve a lot. Maybe Night time or Twilight but you need a steady hand cos the exposure will be longer
Good job
I like when circuits allow that.
Good pics.
And there was lots of empty seats in the main grandstand too....
Nothing like the 130,000 of the 2007ish period...
Grandstand seats are good but we found in Spa we didn't want to be in the same place all weekend. Was awesome at Eau Rouge for the race though
Yes, that's because Alonso is not winning. And that worries me, because I feel that Spanish fans just like F1 because of him. What will happen when he quits driving? :S
Bit disappointing considering Alonso did so well at the end of last year, which is around the time tickets would've been released.
Then again, Jorge Lorenzo is a World Champion now, too.
Yeah, he seems okay though, just going to hospital for a checkover.
Cars are a bit like little IndyCars crossed with F3 or something.
Hehe I know, but you should see how my camera is.
Hopefully I'll be able to buy a reflex in the following weeks, because my digital-little-pocket size camera doesn't allow me to do a lot of things...
You have a good eye though so I'd say keep snapping
Mr C's view on FOTA's letter: http://sidepodcast.posterous.com/fotas-contribution-to-f1
Letter? *Opens Autosport*
I hadn't realised he was as generous as that...
It's on the website too, if your copy is filed somewhere obscure and/or non-existent.
Smallest possible, apparently.
I'd thought that due to them being responsible for Max Mosley's removal from the sport, their pie slice should have been larger. Pity FOTA forgot that bit of their contribution...
I guess that "We haven't been squabbling in the sandpit as much as we used to" should get an odd brownie point....
Let's face it they would make very odd brownies....
Hiiii :)
Evening Alison :)
Ciao
Dear FOTA,
We want 8 cylinder engine's or greater
Less reliance on aerodynamic grip
Less Tilkedromes
No Sky or similar pay TV
Multi HD camera and sound options
Lower ticket prices
.
.
.
Work on that and we'll talk further
Yours, Bassano
that'd be the cream on the top of the pie
(whipped cream if you like)
Pie needs gravy but I take your point
:D
I thought China and Turkey were now the greatest races ever ;-)
We'll see, for the long term
whipped gravy would be silly
Unless it's a pudding, in which case it needs cream, ice cream and/or custard (and I don't mean Jerome...)
Not to everybody and I probably should leave it at that.
Gravy on a pudding is a shocking idea. Mint sauce is a possibilty
:D This analogy just gets better and better!
I'll still think of him as Rice Pudding
Gravy on a pudding is shocking, but pies can be sweet or savoury. Gravy on a savoury pie makes perfect sense (mint sauce is OK too).
Hi all
I like a letter that tells me they are going to do another survey before they have done a fraction of what the last one asked for and reminds me what I should put in it. If they want an independent survey of fans' opinions let me write the questions. I can't help but think that we would get answers they would not like.
Also, if this pie were real, FOTA members would spend 4 hours arguing whether it was sweet or savoury and end up eating the whole lot without coming to a solid conclusion.
agree... ignoring the detail of that though, I think the main point is how do FOTA keep everyone happy?
Hi Steven
Agreed
You can get any answers you want if you answer the right questions
Are FOTA on Twitter?
I say we have SidepodPie
Alex can make it, he has form
They also clearly haven't read the link I gave them to the step-by-step survey fill-in because otherwise they would realise that crediting their response to the survey with stuff they did before they had the survey answers is not a particularly bright idea.
They don't.
They keep as many people as possible as happy as possible while preserving the sport that F1 is supposed to be.
Unfortunately, in cases such as this, the naysayers shout loudest but yes, the majority are largely unanswered so far
I would like them to do a survey focused on china, malaysia and south east asia or south america instead of the uk this time.
much more potential for growth there and we could have some interesting new ideas.
that said, i still think f1 is better off not listening to its fans
I agree, didn't realise it wan't worldwide
On this, I disagree but it depends on how much weight is given to it
I thought it was a worldwide survey.
I got 7 out of 10 on that BTTF quiz.
Pear Cider is yummy, thanks Kopparberg you Swedish geniuses
it was, but it was in english and promoted by a uk magazine
Do you get to do it again 10 mins ago?
Fair point, sponsored by Castrol? ;)
the questions in the survey were setup so that the answers would be what FOTA wanted
She can travel back as often as she can reach 88mph
But is the DeLorean still roadworthy?
Aren't they always
This is more telling when there is no 'free text' field at the end
if you do the fan survey again, please remember to mark yourself down as an occasional F1 viewer - they're less bothered about hardcore fans because they've already got you hook, line and sinker
Good point

By the 31st
Yes but I haven't seen any reports of spreading the payments. Surely they'd have to tell you. What if they took £50 or whatever so you then cleared out your account and then they asked for another £100 and you got a whopping bank charge. I'd have thought they'd only have authorisation for a one off payment at any rate.

there was talk that the system would try to maximise the number of people getting some tickets, therefore applying for fewer tickets meant you were more likely to get the ones you wanted

Hmmm. River Song isn't giving a good impression of herself on Graham Norton's show :(
Obviously not the character :) I can't remember the actresses name... Kingston... whaterface... but she is getting stuff wrong about Dr Who, nooooo
so geeky to notice these things but what the hell :)
Really bad stuff?
Well she was a bit rude about Dr Who fans which was a bit unfair, although she did say they were respectful at least. she said they were like trainspotters just standing around staring at you but not coming too close just in case all dressed in anoraks.
Plus she gave this story about the Doctor finally finding his sexuality kissing a woman for the first time ever with River in this series when that's blatently not true, she's had plenty of kisses before! Silly River. Although matt smith better watch out, she's almost bitten off the tongue of another actor in a kissing scene apparently... scary!

I had no idea Emo Philips was still around
Not sure how many here saw it, but Jorge Goncalez is one very, very, very lucky guy

she could try annoying said alien/monster/bad guy into submission
saw it earlier, unbelievable
Probably a higher success rate
Sorry, Goncalvez (always spell his name wrong). Brian Clausen had the whole outside lane to himself - he should not have closed down turn 1 like that.
GP2 mentality
Lucky boy
His first ever single seater race. He's been a USAC Midget and Sprint Car racer up until now.
I applaud Randy Bernard's thinking of getting USAC guys back into the Indy ladder, but they need a bit more running before they arrive at Indianapolis.
Anyone know who's on Daily duty?
Aussie Saturday?
Chainbear has it scheduled.
Stuart or chainbear on twitter :)
Grand job.
:)
just stumbled across a brilliant picture of Jack Brabham
beat that Mr Heidfeld
There is another picture somewhere from that same race where he is walking to the grid wearing the beard and using a walking stick.
Now that my friends is a beard of beardly proportions
So that's where ZZ Top got the look.

Hurrah for people who have trouble working new-fangled techonology :D
If it really listened instead of merely pretending to listen, it would fix a lot of the problems it has. But the powers-that-be don't really care about fixing problems or hearing new ideas; they just want some numbers so that they can either say "thank you all so much for caring" or "obviously people are satisfied if so few bother filling these things in any more".
Half of all applicants will get nothing and those that are are getting approx 10% of what they applied for. You're doing better than a lot of people.
When do you hear about yours?
I heard on Friday, I got 3 of my 10 but the other 3 Aussies I know who applied all got nothing.
Are you going to still come over for those?
Which 3 did you get Amy?
definitely because one of them is a tennis final and thats the one event I really wanted to see a medal in. In total I'l be seeing 6 medals (2 tennis, 4 swimming) so thats a good result. I'll hopefully get some tickets to random events to fill in my timetable more when the first-come-first served sale starts.
And why are we in Friday's thread? :)
ground pass for the first day of tennis, one session of swimming and the W singles/M doubles tennis final.
Oh well done!
Oooh okay :)
Because I was complaining yesterday :P
Where's the tennis being held, Wimbles?
Yah.
was a bit sad I didn't get the M singles final the following day but after learning my friends got no tickets to the tennis at all, even ground passes, I felt much more appreciative of what I did get.
Let's keep it in the past then ;)
It's fine whatever. If there's loads of empty seats in the end (like there usually are at the Olympics....) I'll go mad though.
There's wheelchair tennis in June in the 'Get Prepared' events
That must be quite something to watch
