There's a lot to live up to today as this week we've had some brilliant, brilliant dailies from both old and new daily writers so let's make today as awesome as possible. I elect we rename Friday to Worldwide Day of Awesome, and that every hour on the hour we all get to swig a drink of our choice. Sadly, this may result in many not remembering Worldwide Day of Awesome.

Paddock News

It's good to practise early - With Monaco being Monaco, we of course get free practise a day early on Thursday which kind of makes me feel like I'm writing Saturday's daily (don't worry Mr C, today is DEFINITELY Friday, I double checked and everything). No huge shocks in practise but it's interesting to note the super softs didn't degrade like a crazy roll of toilet paper rolling down a hill. I must day it was fascinating watching the onboards of Alonso yesterday, the man is a beast around the streets of Monte Carlo.

Row row row Your Lotus Boat, gently down the Lotus River - It seems that today, live on pay per view, in a cage match, Danny Bahar and Tony Fernandes will finally fight it out for the crown of 'Absolute Proper Lotus, Honest Guv' of the world. Sadly, the only bit of this that is true is the fact we'll be hearing the court decision on the Lotus diddlywash nonsense. Not even the letters L, O, T, U or S in this daily are proper Lotus, you know.

Forklift Me Up, higher and higher - In a shocking twist down at the Monte Carlo harbour, it's come to our attention that former World Champion and previous Monaco Grand Prix race winner Jenson Button was nearly maliciously bumped into by a forklift, powering along at almost lethal speeds of a few miles per hour. Whilst Jenson was strong enough to survive this mad bump of utter bumpness, it is believed Colin Kolles is looking at signing up this unknown forklift rookie following the speed it offered.

Elsewhere...

You Just Too Good to Be GP2, Can't Take my Eyes Off You - You guys just have to watch this video of GP2 qualifying yesterday. We wondered why Will Buxton was proper hulking up in anger yesterday on Twitter at qualifying but there are truly no words for how lax and quite shocking the performances are from the GP2 field here. Grosjean's crash on his own team mate is all kinds of mental! Scary though. But it seems a load of penalties have been handed out. No word yet if everyone has to retake their driving test. I say yes. But blindfolded this time.

How I wish, How I Wish You were Here - Not-sure-if-they're-Lotus-till-the-court-battle Renault GP uploaded a bunch of pictures from the world of Monte Carlo, that lovely world that seems so far away and I want to just escape to and possibly lick to make sure it tastes as good as it looks. Maybe not the final part. But these photos just looking at the surroundings just make me wanna head right there and just gawp at everything in utter amazement. My local council estate isn't as pretty see, but hey, we have a pier too. Sure, it's a muddy hole, and it is in the middle of a field, and it has a shoe in it, but let's not be specific here.

Formula One, One One in the Sun, Sun Sun - I would never have thought that Danny John Jules, or whom most of you may know as Cat from the awesome Red Dwarf, would be such an epic motorsport geek but I loved his guest post here for Badger GP. The guy seems a huge, huge Moto GP fan and there's some fabulous photos in there with some big name stars from the world of motorsport too but it's a good little read. The man knows his stuff too without a doubt. Maybe we'll see the Carbug get a bit of KERS and DRS when the series returns...

The continued scary aftermath of nature's power - Nature never seems to amaze me for what it can do but this is most certainly not a good thing at times. These photos from the Big Picture show the aftermath of the Joplin tornadoes that had been brutally striking the area and it left me at a loss of words at how much destruction it had caused. My thoughts are truly with everyone affected by the disaster and hope that they recover as a community as soon as they can.

Itty Bitty Links

I've decided to end my dailies now with just itty bitty little links not related to motorsport or blogging but just to throw them in there anyways to share, hopefully they'll be as interesting to you guys as they are to me!

And that's that for another week. It's actually quite a big day for me today as it's my last day at my job I've been meaning to escape for ages and ages, so it's a bit wierd but also exciting too. Remember there's no practise session today so head out and have a fabulous Friday before we have another exciting weekend of the most glamorous weekend of the F1 Calendar. Until they announce the Grand Prix of Newport, of course. That goes without saying. Until then, I'll see you in the comments!

    hellooo!

I got 3 of my 10 Olympics tickets so I am happy enough but now I start hoping that other people decide not to proceed with their allocations thus freeing up more tickets for me to buy in June in the first-come-first-served sale :D

Or rather how did you find out the number of tickets

our ballot is working opposite to yours in that we got told what we've been assigned and then we have to pay for them, rather than paying first and then being told.

They still haven't sent me an email but I noticed someone tweeting that their American relatives had their tickets and the same company doing the American ballots is doing ours so I logged into my account and wallah, $370 of tickets out of $1300 applied for. Gives me lots to spend in the later sale but I don't want to buy rubbish events just for the sake of going to the Olympics, I'm already happy enough that I get to sit on Centre Court at Wimbledon once.

More to spend on other London attractions. Or not. :)

I am kind of shocked I got a swimming ticket because swimming is sooo popular but on the other hand I can't believe I missed out on rowing.

  • Amy26/05/2011 at 23:20

    do you know what events?

2x tennis (one ground pass, one centre court) and 1x swimming

  • Simon Furnivall26/05/2011 at 23:20

I think I may be the only person on earth who didn't apply for Olympic tickets.

  • Mav26/05/2011 at 23:20

    one centre court

hope you haven't got my seats :-)

I haven't applied for any either.

thats one of the days I wanted too! I got the day before though with the womens singles and mens doubles final so I'm happy with that. I just wanted to be greedy and get both :)

  • Mav26/05/2011 at 23:24

I haven't applied for any either.

okay, so it's just me and Amy... so what has all the fuss been about?

  • Simon Furnivall26/05/2011 at 23:24

That's that theory quickly and effectively blown out of the water then.

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2011 at 23:25

that's not a bad ticket to end up with is it? :-)

  • Amy26/05/2011 at 23:29

that's not a bad ticket to end up with is it?

not in the slightest. My original plan back in the day was to only go to tennis so I is very happy. I will be most happy if Switzerland win the doubles again.

Now I just need the FIA calendar to see if I can wedge a race into my trip.

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2011 at 23:31

  • Steven Roy27/05/2011 at 00:35

I assumed they would be selling pairs rather than singles

  • Amy27/05/2011 at 00:37

I assumed they would be selling pairs rather than singles

they sell as many as you apply for, but in lots of events the max you could apply for was 2 anyway.

From going to concerts I learned going alone sometimes helps as when theres random spare seats all by themselves they can slot you in there.

  • Amy27/05/2011 at 00:42

some stats: they had 9,530 tickets available and had 49,285 requests.

Only 5.59% of swimming applications were confirmed. 0.25% of opening ceremony applications were.

9,530 doesn't sound like much considering this company had the tickets for the USA, Canada, Australia, and about 10 EU countries.

ex flattie appears to be stalking on my behalf, she just wrote on my facebook

So I think I saw your husband riding his scooter last night... took a very drunk blurry photo of him walking with his helmet. No practise today so he must have been out and about. Just in case you were keeping tabs on him.

I don't know who she thinks my husband is. I presume Heikki but I couldn't be sure!

  • F1Wolf27/05/2011 at 07:44

I am feeling very lucky with my 3 tickets based on other Aussies I'm seeing on twitter.

I am always amazed how the tickets are handled at these huge events. It is the same everytime, initial shortage of tickets and at the end many people simply turn out and get to the events ... I know several people with no special connections who got easy access to World Cup games they wanted, Olympics (excluding the opening and closing ceremonies though) etc ... No idea how this all works.

I remember one of early Chinese GPs when it still was really hard to get good seats. I worked hard to get us bunch of seats where we wanted half a year ahead of race, one friend who made last minute decision simply turned up, bought ticket at the box office and got seat 10 metres away from us ...

  • Alex Andronov27/05/2011 at 07:45

I guess thats like me at the tennis this year when my friend bought on the first day and ended up two rows from the back and I bought about 4 days before the match and got the 8th row. The annoying thing was I had an empty seat beside me the whole match that she could have used but she was with her brother and they wouldn't both fit

Aye – the connection was a bit ropey during the call unfortunately. I cleaned it up as much as I could, but there’s not a whole lot one can do when the interference drifts across the vocal range.

Final straw was last night when I was doing the live text for Rally Argentina. Was supposed to kick off at 7pm our time, but it started late and they ran in reverse order so the Loebs of this world weren't on until almost 10. I am not popular.

Fortunately one of the cats brought a mouse in and loudly announced the fact at 3.45am, which caused some irk displacement.

Well, indeed. Long plane trips aren't agreeing with my back at the moment.

I wish iPods, et al, were invented earlier. Back when I was going to the US every couple of weeks to do the ALMS magazine, you were ultra-lucky if you got on a plane with a seat-back video and more than a couple of films on offer. I remember one year resorting to watching the X Men in Chinese.

Compare and contrast with my recent EasyJet flight to Jordan where the fellow next to me was watching The Wire on his iPad.

I am not watching it because for some reason Australian TV is showing Schiavone. I know shes the defending champ but Australian TV is normally so into their own players that you wouldn't even know theres others in the tournament.

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 09:54

    Watda?!

    down to 4th after pitstops...

They must be in denial. She's about to lose the first set.

  • Amy27/05/2011 at 09:55

oh I lie, now shes on my telly. Fox Sports must have realised she's losing.

    More crashing?

That qualifying session highlights reel exposed some of the most shockingly poor driving I've seen in a very long time - just embarrassing. Nothing but embarrassing

  • Amy27/05/2011 at 10:01

Do you think they are embarrassed that they came in basically the same outfit?

It's actually an improvement by Lacoste for them to be wearing different colours! Normally they go with one shade for everyone which sucks.

In those cases you have to hope that one of them is wearing a hat

The hell of it all is separating out what's gone on the company credit card from what I've put on my own in a misplaced cashback-grab, plus what I've paid for with my debit card because so many places these days stiff you for an admin fee if you pay by anything other than debit card.

Stuart... Maybe a little too late for this occasion but lots of people have recommended this to me: http://www.getharvest.com/

I think tennis players make things difficult on purpose, the other day when Wozniacki played Wozniak they had to turn the 3 letter abbreviation of their names into 4 letter ones :)

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/05/2011 at 10:07

Who knew there were two of them?

The other day there were two chaps playing who had the same initial and surname. The umpire had to call them by their first names :)

They should make it like acting, where you can't have the same name as someone else and if you do you have to change it.

Good thing tennis doesn't have to deal with the Andretti clan - at one point, there was Mario, Michael, John, Jeff and Aldo all racing at the same time.

Just been massively busy this year so have had no time to sort out essential admin stuff.

I always like things, like the harvest thing, there where it makes it easier than not doing it. I mean right now you keep the recipt and put it somewhere and everything. If you could take a picture, tag it and then throw it in the bin that seems easier than the alternative :)

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 10:14

I just got an email from my university telling me as part of their regular maintenance they're going to dispose of my email account because they're only for current students.

Not sure how regular that maintenance actually is, I graduated four years ago.

Mine got deleted at the end of the month I graduated - they couldn't do it any earlier in case some people needed to resit modules. However, anyone who stayed on for postgraduate studies (nobody in my department, but the entire university was under the same regime) lost their account until the start of their postgraduate course.

  • Christine27/05/2011 at 10:17

The commentators were complaining they couldn't find anything bad to say about Roger. He's not helping!

He was saying the other day that he wants to get a full size replica of the Coupe des Mousquetaires because they only give winners a tiny wee one.

"I'm going to do it, no matter the price. I fought for so many years to have the Coupe Des Mousquetaires Cup, and I only got this tiny one."

<3 not that price is probably an issue for him :D

  • Amy27/05/2011 at 12:44

The good thing about this years slam is its now two years since Rog won so they don't replay match point in every break of play. I think I've seen it 200 times and it always makes me tear up. So happpppppy.

Not sure if they could up until now

Given that Group Lotus have appealed, that will inadvertently have bought Team Lotus some time to sort that out. Given that they will just append the word 'Team' to the chassis name if they need to do so, there should be no problem doing that next season. But I do wonder what they'll do if they're forced to change it this season.

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 15:38

The Judge also found that Team Lotus has the right to continue to race in Formula 1 under the name Team Lotus but the effect of the Judgment is that only Group Lotus can use the name “Lotus” on its own in F1

So basically the judge found that everyone was entitled to use the full version of what they wanted to use alongside the liveries each of them currently uses, and that Renault is also entitled to call itself Lotus on its own?

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/05/2011 at 15:38

At the end of the season, yes. They can't do it until then unless every other team agrees - which should be feasible now.

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 15:42

But I do wonder what they'll do if they're forced to change it this season.

They'll point out that they need the agreement of every other team in the pit lane to do the change, otherwise they're obliged to keep the name they already have.

  • Journeyer27/05/2011 at 15:46

Reading Adam C's post on the matter:

    http://adamcooperf1.com/2011/05/27/group-lotus-also-retains-right-to-use-name-in-f1/

It seems the biggest loser of all was David Hunt. TLVL's license on the Team Lotus name was revoked, but both TL and GL covered that base by applying for the trademark as well. The judge ruled in favor of TL in that application. So TL gets the name without having to pay David Hunt because he doesn't own the name anymore. Did I get that right?

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 15:47

    wasn't "Team"? :-)

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 15:55

But the court said only Group Lotus can call it Lotus on its own, right?

Team Lotus has the right to use Lotus in F1 (and only in F1). In theory, both sides could still use Lotus in F1 but in practise precedence has been established for Team Lotus in that specific arena. Given the line Group Lotus' thoughts are taking, they will either remove that right from Team Lotus under appeal or go for something not easily mistaken for plain Lotus in their naming procedure. For example, they could call it "Lotus Group Premier Racing" and even keep the acronym (LRGP) they use now...

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 15:55

Of course I could just have confused myself there.

  • Journeyer27/05/2011 at 15:56

But isn't T128 just the designation?

This will be a tangle. Interesting to note, though, that Group Lotus legal referred to Team Lotus as Team Lotus (and not 1Malaysia) in their press statement.

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 15:56

depends how you look at it, the chassis name is "Lotus T128" which isn't Lotus on its own

It's not, but if Group Lotus argued it could be mistaken for "Lotus" chassis name and "T128" as the model name (which as far as I know is the truth), there could be another court case forcing the issue.

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 15:57

either way, I don't think the ruling applies to the chassis name as such, it's a branding issue. they can't have merchandising saying "Lotus" but they could have it saying "Lotus T128"

It's not, but if Group Lotus argued it could be mistaken for "Lotus" chassis name and "T128" as the model name (which as far as I know is the truth), there could be another court case forcing the issue.

They're not. They're selling merchandising based on the chassis. It might make a difference... ...but it might not.

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 16:04

They're not. They're selling merchandising based on the chassis. It might make a difference... ...but it might not.

shouldn't make a difference, the team could in effect be called "Lotus" as long as they didn't go around calling themselves "Lotus". If that sounds weird, well they're already called 1Malaysia and calling themselves Team Lotus

More seriously, I read it as:

    - Group Lotus thinks Team Lotus can use the ABCB monogram in any context (which for me is unexpected as I expected it to stay with the Lotus Group, perhaps with a goodwill licence for F1 purposes to Team Lotus)

    - Team Lotus thinks Group Lotus can use "Lotus", "Group Lotus" and the Lotus logo.

    - If and only if the agreement is broken, it may only use them in association with another entity (so it would have to be called "X (Group) Lotus" or "(Group) Lotus X")

    - Subject to clause 10.2, without the agreement being broken, any use of "Group Lotus" or "Lotus" in conjunction with another entity must be with notice provided to Team Lotus. That notice must indicate the name to be used, which cannot be "Lotus", "Team Lotus" or a translation thereof.

    - Team Lotus must be called "Team Lotus" - it cannot call itself anything else, unless "Lotus" is not involved in the alternative name.

    - Group Lotus is defined as primarily a manufacturer and consultancy

    - It is forbidden to provide its services to any high-level racing series unless it owns at least 15% of the organisation to which it provides services (so no more providing customer KERS or engines to Red Bull, for example...)

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 16:34

    :D OK, I'll pick a specific sentence.

On sober reflection, that sentence is the sentence I think the judge might not have completely thought through. This team is no longer permitted to supply customer components to other teams - even ones otherwise unaffected by this naming issue.

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 16:34

Er.. does that mean GL cannot make an IndyCar aero kit?

It can if it only provides it to teams it owns 15% of. So a limited-circulation aero kit, maybe?

  • Journeyer27/05/2011 at 16:35

From his tweets it sounds like all those green and cold logos on the renaults may have to come off tomorrow

Not totally sure here - it seems the case acknowledges they have different roundels and they can keep using their respective roundels.

    From the decision itself:

The goodwill associated with Team Lotus and the Roundel has devolved to TLVL. The marks however in my view ought to be revoked for non use between 2003 and 2008 but the goodwill remains and is still protectable.

Equally GL has the goodwill associated with Lotus and its Roundel and it is free to compete in F1 under that name using that Roundel.

  • Journeyer27/05/2011 at 16:41

    Interesting...

I wonder what these tweets were about then?

"Incredible spin by group lotus. Amazing how they can turn a huge loss. With this judgement there is no holding me back now and we will enforce with full force."

"More statements coming from us and we will now seek clarity from the sporting regulators."

"If group lotus won. Why do they want to appeal. We are very happy with the judgement. Now watch us enforce."

I haven't done much reading so I don't know what they classify as 'Class A'.

Interesting though, that both can still use the name.

  • Journeyer27/05/2011 at 16:42

    Crikey

If that seems like a lot, here's a link to the conclusions.

  • Journeyer27/05/2011 at 16:51

"Incredible spin by group lotus. Amazing how they can turn a huge loss. With this judgement there is no holding me back now and we will enforce with full force."

I think they mean using the Team Lotus name. The judgment says nothing about GL having to end sponsorship with Renault. The decision notes:

Further the purpose of GL participating in F1 is to be associated with a successful F1 car. Thus as I understand it, its association with Renault under the name Lotus Renault is in the expectation or hope that the car will be successful and their name will be associated with it. Thus the purpose of the association in F1 is to boost the sales of sports cars.

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 16:53

I wonder what these tweets were about then?

Lotus Group said they won the key points in their press release

actually all they've really won is that they were fine to end the Lotus Racing contract as 1malaysia breached the merchandising agreement

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 16:53

implications for ever owning an F1 team rather than sponsoring?

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 16:56

well, that second point is where GL lost today

  • Journeyer27/05/2011 at 16:56

The implications for Lotus Jetalliance in LMS are interesting...

I think they should be clear. It does make it difficult for Team Lotus to enter sports car racing, though.

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 16:58

implications for ever owning an F1 team rather than sponsoring?

Implications for what happens to the team if Lotus ever loses its sponsor. Without the sponsor it would be "Lotus", which it can't use on its own if LMS is considered "A-class racing".

Or I was until I discovered LMS is considered "B-class racing" on the grounds that the cars have multiple seats.

  • Nick27/05/2011 at 16:58

I think they should be clear. It does make it difficult for Team Lotus to enter sports car racing, though.

Why? the judgement sounds like they have an open field to do what they like as long as they are Called 'Team Lotus' & not just 'Lotus'

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 17:00

I think they should be clear. It does make it difficult for Team Lotus to enter sports car racing, though.

It should be OK provided it calls itself "Team Lotus", only does one class of one series and doesn't supply more than one customer team (it has a limit of 12 B-class racers imposed upon it).

  • Journeyer27/05/2011 at 17:00

Why? the judgement sounds like they have an open field to do what they like as long as they are Called 'Team Lotus' & not just 'Lotus'

    From the decision:

I therefore conclude that as a matter of fact even if GL had the exclusive right to Lotus and the trade mark in the Roundel that it has there is no realistic possibility of confusion if TLVL or anyone authorised by it competes in F1 alone racing cars as opposed to building and selling sports cars. I have already commented on the paucity of the evidence above. The evidence does not to my mind provide me with a clear picture so I am left to deal with it ultimately on the basis of my opinion. In my opinion there is no likelihood of deception in this case where the activities of TLL and its successors are limited to F1 racing.

It would have been otherwise if they were competing in the sports car world; it would be otherwise if GL had a reputation in F1 racing as opposed to sports car manufacturing.

Simply put, it would be much more likely for there to be confusion if TL raced sports cars, as it's too similar to GL's business.

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 17:01

Simply put, it would be much more likely for there to be confusion if TL raced sports cars, as it's too similar to GL's business.

It's allowed to make 12 B-class racing vehicles and it is allowed to compete in B-class racing as "Team Lotus". It just can't race as anything else, unless the something else doesn't include Lotus at all.

    Mr C's view on FOTA's letter: sidepodcast.poste…ontribution-to-f1

    Dear FOTA,

We want 8 cylinder engine's or greater

    Less reliance on aerodynamic grip

    Less Tilkedromes

No Sky or similar pay TV

Multi HD camera and sound options

    Lower ticket prices

    .

    .

    .

Work on that and we'll talk further

    Yours, Bassano

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 18:17

I'd thought that due to them being responsible for Max Mosley's removal from the sport, their pie slice should have been larger. Pity FOTA forgot that bit of their contribution...

that'd be the cream on the top of the pie

    (whipped cream if you like)

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:18

that'd be the cream on the top of the pie

Pie needs gravy but I take your point

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 18:18

that'd be the cream on the top of the pie

    :D

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 18:18

    Less Tilkedromes

I thought China and Turkey were now the greatest races ever ;-)

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:18

I thought China and Turkey were now the greatest races ever ;-)

We'll see, for the long term

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 18:18

Pie needs gravy but I take your point

    whipped gravy would be silly

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 18:18

Pie needs gravy but I take your point

Unless it's a pudding, in which case it needs cream, ice cream and/or custard (and I don't mean Jerome...)

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 18:19

I thought China and Turkey were now the greatest races ever ;-)

Not to everybody and I probably should leave it at that.

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:19

Unless it's a pudding, in which case it needs cream, ice cream and/or custard (and I don't mean Jerome...)

Gravy on a pudding is a shocking idea. Mint sauce is a possibilty

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 18:19

    whipped gravy would be silly

:D This analogy just gets better and better!

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:20

    and/or custard (and I don't mean Jerome...)

I'll still think of him as Rice Pudding

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 18:20

Gravy on a pudding is a shocking idea. Mint sauce is a possibilty

Gravy on a pudding is shocking, but pies can be sweet or savoury. Gravy on a savoury pie makes perfect sense (mint sauce is OK too).

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:20

    whipped gravy would be silly

  • Steven Roy27/05/2011 at 18:20

    Hi all

    Mr C's view on FOTA's letter: sidepodcast.poste…ontribution-to-f1

I like a letter that tells me they are going to do another survey before they have done a fraction of what the last one asked for and reminds me what I should put in it. If they want an independent survey of fans' opinions let me write the questions. I can't help but think that we would get answers they would not like.

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 18:21

Also, if this pie were real, FOTA members would spend 4 hours arguing whether it was sweet or savoury and end up eating the whole lot without coming to a solid conclusion.

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 18:21

Not to everybody and I probably should leave it at that.

agree... ignoring the detail of that though, I think the main point is how do FOTA keep everyone happy?

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:21

    Hi all

    Hi Steven

I like a letter that tells me they are going to do another survey before they have done a fraction of what the last one asked for and reminds me what I should put in it. If they want an independent survey of fans' opinions let me write the questions. I can't help but think that we would get answers they would not like.

    Agreed

You can get any answers you want if you answer the right questions

    Are FOTA on Twitter?

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:22

Also, if this pie were real, FOTA members would spend 4 hours arguing whether it was sweet or savoury and end up eating the whole lot without coming to a solid conclusion.

    I say we have SidepodPie

Alex can make it, he has form

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 18:23

If they want an independent survey of fans' opinions let me write the questions. I can't help but think that we would get answers they would not like.

They also clearly haven't read the link I gave them to the step-by-step survey fill-in because otherwise they would realise that crediting their response to the survey with stuff they did before they had the survey answers is not a particularly bright idea.

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 18:23

agree... ignoring the detail of that though, I think the main point is how do FOTA keep everyone happy?

    They don't.

They keep as many people as possible as happy as possible while preserving the sport that F1 is supposed to be.

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:24

They keep as many people as possible as happy as possible while preserving the sport that F1 is supposed to be.

Unfortunately, in cases such as this, the naysayers shout loudest but yes, the majority are largely unanswered so far

I would like them to do a survey focused on china, malaysia and south east asia or south america instead of the uk this time.

much more potential for growth there and we could have some interesting new ideas.

that said, i still think f1 is better off not listening to its fans

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:29

    I agree, didn't realise it wan't worldwide

On this, I disagree but it depends on how much weight is given to it

  • Nick27/05/2011 at 18:30

it was, but it was in english and promoted by a uk magazine

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:30

Do you get to do it again 10 mins ago?

Fair point, sponsored by Castrol? ;)

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 18:35

the questions in the survey were setup so that the answers would be what FOTA wanted

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 18:37

the questions in the survey were setup so that the answers would be what FOTA wanted

    Aren't they always

This is more telling when there is no 'free text' field at the end

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 18:37

if you do the fan survey again, please remember to mark yourself down as an occasional F1 viewer - they're less bothered about hardcore fans because they've already got you hook, line and sinker

Yes but I haven't seen any reports of spreading the payments. Surely they'd have to tell you. What if they took £50 or whatever so you then cleared out your account and then they asked for another £100 and you got a whopping bank charge. I'd have thought they'd only have authorisation for a one off payment at any rate.

I don't mind about setting the money aside etc. I'm annoyed that half the tickets are basically not even part of the ballot so there's very little to share between everyone else.

  • Mav27/05/2011 at 20:02

We knew this would be mismanaged, it's why I didn't over order. Apply for few and not get my hopes up

there was talk that the system would try to maximise the number of people getting some tickets, therefore applying for fewer tickets meant you were more likely to get the ones you wanted

  • Lukeh27/05/2011 at 22:05

    Really bad stuff?

Well she was a bit rude about Dr Who fans which was a bit unfair, although she did say they were respectful at least. she said they were like trainspotters just standing around staring at you but not coming too close just in case all dressed in anoraks.

Plus she gave this story about the Doctor finally finding his sexuality kissing a woman for the first time ever with River in this series when that's blatently not true, she's had plenty of kisses before! Silly River. Although matt smith better watch out, she's almost bitten off the tongue of another actor in a kissing scene apparently... scary!

  • Lukeh27/05/2011 at 22:05

Plus she gave this story about the Doctor finally finding his sexuality kissing a woman for the first time ever with River in this series when that's blatently not true, she's had plenty of kisses before! Silly River. Although matt smith better watch out, she's almost bitten off the tongue of another actor in a kissing scene apparently... scary!

She clearly didn't watch that episode she was on where Amy jumped him.

Here's something you don't see everyday

i saw something like that already today

in the daily I believe :-)

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 22:10

Hmmm. River Song isn't giving a good impression of herself on Graham Norton's show :(

    *googles*

    Alex Kingston is in DW?

    What happened to Karen Gillan?

    [Hmmmmmmm]

  • Steven Roy27/05/2011 at 22:11

An x-ray of a dog driking

Is this from the research I was reading about earlier that scientists have worked out dogs and cats drink the same way.

I could have told them that. They dip their tongue in a bowl and lift water with it

  • Christine27/05/2011 at 22:11

    Alex Kingston is in DW?

    Since 2008.

  • Lukeh27/05/2011 at 22:11

    [Hmmmmmmm]

Karen is still in it too but the Doctor has like 78 companions at the moment so she's been in a lot of this series too :)

  • Bassano27/05/2011 at 22:11

My excuse is that Mr C won't promote it for another 24hrs in my realtime twitter feed ;)

    Random:

Sometimes it's fun to pull up next to a Prius, ask the driver "Is it OK to compost dryer lint?" and see if they give you a serious answer.

Sorry, Goncalvez (always spell his name wrong). Brian Clausen had the whole outside lane to himself - he should not have closed down turn 1 like that.

His first ever single seater race. He's been a USAC Midget and Sprint Car racer up until now.

I applaud Randy Bernard's thinking of getting USAC guys back into the Indy ladder, but they need a bit more running before they arrive at Indianapolis.

There is another picture somewhere from that same race where he is walking to the grid wearing the beard and using a walking stick.

Christine may be interested in this. Queen documentary with unseen footage.

Hurrah for people who have trouble working new-fangled techonology :D

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2011 at 23:54

that said, i still think f1 is better off not listening to its fans

If it really listened instead of merely pretending to listen, it would fix a lot of the problems it has. But the powers-that-be don't really care about fixing problems or hearing new ideas; they just want some numbers so that they can either say "thank you all so much for caring" or "obviously people are satisfied if so few bother filling these things in any more".

  • Amy28/05/2011 at 05:00

I applied for a lot of tickets. I'd be sad if I only got 1 event.

Half of all applicants will get nothing and those that are are getting approx 10% of what they applied for. You're doing better than a lot of people.

  • Alison28/05/2011 at 06:42

When do you hear about yours?

  • Amy28/05/2011 at 08:12

When do you hear about yours?

I heard on Friday, I got 3 of my 10 but the other 3 Aussies I know who applied all got nothing.

  • Alison28/05/2011 at 08:13

Which 3 did you get Amy?

  • Amy28/05/2011 at 08:14

Are you going to still come over for those?

definitely because one of them is a tennis final and thats the one event I really wanted to see a medal in. In total I'l be seeing 6 medals (2 tennis, 4 swimming) so thats a good result. I'll hopefully get some tickets to random events to fill in my timetable more when the first-come-first served sale starts.

  • Bassano28/05/2011 at 08:14

And why are we in Friday's thread? :)

  • Amy28/05/2011 at 08:15

Which 3 did you get Amy?

ground pass for the first day of tennis, one session of swimming and the W singles/M doubles tennis final.

  • Bassano28/05/2011 at 08:15

    Yah.

  • Amy28/05/2011 at 08:16

was a bit sad I didn't get the M singles final the following day but after learning my friends got no tickets to the tennis at all, even ground passes, I felt much more appreciative of what I did get.

It's fine whatever. If there's loads of empty seats in the end (like there usually are at the Olympics....) I'll go mad though.

  • Bassano28/05/2011 at 08:17

There's wheelchair tennis in June in the 'Get Prepared' events

That must be quite something to watch
