It's Thursday but don't let that get you down because if there is a better Thursday on the calendar I'm yet to meet it. Yes it's Monaco weekend and that means the track action starts a whole day early. Yay for archaic motorsport traditions! It also means I can use the word Monégasque. Don't ask me why, I just like the word.
The Thursday start also means that the driver press conference was yesterday. Highlight for me was FIA interviewer, Bob Constanduros' question to Jenson Button: "Do you regard this as a home race?" Jenson Button: "I don’t live here..."
The sun is expected to be out in Monte Carlo with the only cloud on the horizon being the fresh asphalt on the entry to Ste. Devote. Will it stay in one piece or not? Follow free practice to find out. Meanwhile, here's a little quiz for you - if you don't know the answers to these you clearly haven't been spending enough time online yesterday.
Q1. This weekend is the Monaco Grand Prix but what should you expect?
A. Too much to fit here, that's for sure, so instead check out Sidepodcast's Race information and Viva F1's Preview
Q2. Is the Monaco Grand Prix worth watching?
A. Yes. According to one recent review, Lukeh had this to say: "Monaco baby, yeah!"
Q3. What other classic motor race is happening this weekend?
A. The Indianapolis 500. Check out The F1 and Motorsports Archive' overview of Bump Day and Post-Bump Day Bump Day and let Leigh know what you think of the driver shuffle
Q4. We haven't heard from Franck for a little while but he's got a new lady in his life. Who?
A. No, Not Christine. In fact he's had a daughter which came as a surprise to Christine - will this mean she's looking for a new blog idea?
Q5. Ferrari have been rearranging their staff but who do The Scuderia need to get back to winning ways?
A. Ross Brawn, obviously. Or at least someone of a similar ilk according to Professor Mark Jenkins, a man who also believes that Stefano Domenicali is not that person
Q6. Who invented the Gurney flap?
A. Edward F Zaparka, according to the patent office, but then the Dan Gurney story is so much more interesting
Q7. Red Bull are upset about somebody copying them this week. Who and what have they been copying?
A. Ferrari, and Red Bull think they've been copying their pitstop strategy. Considering what happened in Abu Dhabi, you have to wonder why they're so bothered though
If that's not enough Monégasque quizziness, here's 10 questions to test you
And if you still can't excited about a Thursday, there's always the French Open Tennis. Today sees Rafael Nadal, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Robin Soderling and some guy called Andy Murray all in action at Roland Garros.
Sure, it's a Thursday but I promise you, it's going to be a good one.
I love the daily as a quiz. I don't think that has been done before
I'm having some fun with the layout, think I'm happy with it now
Awesome, I didn't realise Mav was doing the daily. I just posted in the Viva forum and was just going to link to it here:
http://www.vivaf1.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1859&start=48
I should read that place more often
I have lots of VHS tapes of races and I don't want them any more.
There, I can now say I've done a daily
Me too, I keep forgetting Pitmonster's game closes on a Thursday not a Friday. Although I just read that it closed an hour ago, rats.
How was it? :)
Yes, I was going to change my picks but then got doing the daily, suddenly had an urge for a gamble on Hamilton pole and win
Mostly harmless
:)
This is a good week for Dailies.
No pressure Lukeh.
Night folks, my early night vanished :-)
I'm off too, this counts as an early night compared to the last several days. :)
That happens when daily-writing, btw :)
i thought it was called the daily because there was one every day, not because it takes all day to write
ah well, an early night on sunday? :-D
:D
Very appropriate since we are just leaving towel day

Hehehe! I have a lot to live up to, there's been some brilliant dailies this week
Yay - work has a cake sale at midday. I'm hungry for sweets
:)
Yum :)
My fish and chips was more just 'fish' because once I'd eaten that I didn't want the chips.
Now I'm watching Kim Clijsters fail to win her match. Come onnnnn Kimmy!
Me too. Last few games she;'s been shocking
right when I turned it on! #sorrykim
You're a jinx! I blame the chips :)
It was 5-2 to kim serving for the match and yet somehow now its rus who's serving for the set. Kim needs to chill out a bit.
Speaking of "Kimmy" (ahem), the other Kimi is making his Nationwide debut at Charlotte this weekend (Saturday night I think)
Ohhh Kim. *shakes head*
Kinda feel like seeing them run monaco in reverse for FP2
I also am not down with what Rus is wearing because I know they're from the same Adidas collection but the pink and orange I cannot deal with, especially when she seems to be wearing a pink top under the orange one anyway.
Spa in reverse would be a sight to see
That would require loads of engineering to give more run off.
I think monago would be easier, maybe just a small change at st devote.
Given the speed of their resurfacing it shouldnt be too dificult
interesting idea :-) alternate same circuits clockwise and anticlockwise :-) either each season, or qualify one way race the other :-)
I even have a new name for the reverse circuit... monago, brilliant
Or should it be ocanom
Oca-nom-nom-nom-nom-nom
where alonso's title hopes will be "mono-gone" if he crashes again this year
(ba dum tische)
....mona-gone...
(ahem)
Brilliant daily, thanks Mav :)
It looks quite windy out on that orange court.
You could say it's starting to blow away Clijster's chances of going through...
#groan
Hehe.
Huge debate raging as to whether colin coles and the lead singer of Mumford & Sons is the same person in the office

Oh my word, best way to win a point ever in the tennis!
The post wants to play!
Busy day :)
I am off to retrieve ice cream from the freezer. If she starts doing better while I'm gone I won't watch the end :)
It seems unlikely!
Don't get your hopes up I'm afraid ms Amy
The cricket being rained delayed has led to a productivity crisis,
We have switched to VH1 :)
Bad time for a double fault.
I find it ironic the set she's losing quite heavily in she's had the least unforced errors.
Must be soooooo annoying to know you were one point away from victory and now you're looking at a possible defeat
Cakes bought
:D
Yum :)
another game bites the dust for Kim
Amy might need a lot of that ice cream.
They're yumsy. I had to stop myself
At least she needn't feel guilty about watching Kim, since it is clear she wasn't jinxing her in the first place.
Very true.
Match point for Rus.
Commentators: "I don't think it's whether Rus feels she can win it, but if Clijsters makes a couple of mistakes or not. I don't think Rus has much to do with this."
Well... she kinda does.
You'd think so.
Bit unfair on poor Rus! She's done very well even if Kim has kind of self destructed
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/?attachment_id=4281
looks like my absense didn't help
Exactly - and who's to say Rus hasn't been the reason Kim self-destructed in the first place?
it's OK, I have 6! The $5 icecreams I have gotten hooked on I found for $8 for a 3 pack at the supermarket. That's much cheaper.
Blimey, what a shocker
Yay!
aw its only funny when someone loses after they had match point when their name is Ana Ivanovic #idontlikeana
Uh oh, another mean player?
far too much fist pumping and possibly the worlds most inconsistent player. She regularly gets voted best looking and it really bothers me the WTA markets her rather than players who are actually good at tennis.
I kind of hate the way female players get marketed as models not athletes but thats a whooole rant I could go on about so I won't :)
I blame Anna Kournikova.
good plan :D
I caught up with some of Nadal's match and he was way over the top with the fist pumping once he started to make his comeback.
Results ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/monaco-2011-free-practice-1-results
I didn't mind it when Tin henman always used to do it because he was rubbish and never won so he's allowed to have the odd moment of celebration :)
I hate when people fist pump when they win a point that takes them to 15-0 or something. It's like dude, you've still got a looong way to go to win the game.
I hate all that celebration, it puts me off watching.
Its the equivelent of someone celebrating making a pass in football.
Can you imagine if drivers did it everytime they got a green sector?
We'd get a lot more spins and crashes!
Do we know this guy Murray is playing?
I have noooo idea :)
Hehe. I think mostly by that I meant, Amy, tell us! :)
I've heard of him enough that when I saw his initial I knew his first name but I don't know much about him :)
If he wins it'd be the upset of the year :)
Based on the latest @Pearcesport tweets people are finally being debited for Olympics tickets over there and are generally not getting an awful lot of what they applied for.
And in other news my friend has blogged about the French Open again but is not quite as controversial this time :) http://anygivensurface.wordpress.com/2011/05/26/fashion-french-open-2011/
Not a shock really.
ooh Sam Querrey lost. I wonder if he'll pack a sad and go home in a tiff like he did last year. That made me mad because he killed Quisner :(. At least Isner had a much better excuse when he killed them at Wimbledon.
Im not suprised, i expect everyone applied for the gold medal deciders and not the prelims. Luckily i mixed it up
Is there a round 2 for the leftovers?
Definitely. I just hope that people over there getting 10% of what they applied for won't apply here because for me that would mean a whopping one ticket :)
On first look the top and shorts seems like they’re from seperate collections, until you see a flash of green on the collar; confirmation that yes, Murray was dressed like this on purpose.
Hehehe!
Those who ended up with nothing from their selection will have first pick of the remaining tickets and then they'll go on general first-come-first-served sale.
Boo-urns
Probably because everyone will have gone for the popular events and not for the less popular ones.
and also for the 20 quid tickets, not the 200 quid ones :)
Yep
I don't understand why Adidas made this big deal about getting Andy into their stable and have dressed him horribly ever since.
When you walk into the Adidas store he also seems to be distinctly lacking in their advertising, it's all Verdasco. Which I do not complain about.

Any second now, you'll be running further than me. You're doing brilliantly well!
I got lapped by someone twice on the same lap today for the first time ever. I'd only done half the track and bam there he was again. It appeared that his legs were longer than I am tall though but it was still like 'woah, I'll never be that fast!'
I also ran the first 5 minutes up a gentle slope and I definitely think that inclines suck so I'm still in awe of your huge elevation changes :)
They do suck. But then there are downhills that match the uphills so it's not all bad :)
running downhill just makes me feel like I'm going to fall over :(
I definitely thought that today because it was raining. Slippy out there.
showing Murray in slow mo just makes it even more clear just how many curse words he's letting fly
Wow, that's really good going!
Murray is scraping his way through then.
Not quite making it easy on himself!
He can't keep using the same ball forever!
my TV has moved onto Rafa, he's not having the easiest day either. Too much fistpumping again so I've turned it off to catch up on todays Masterchef. It's another dessert day, yay! I think they should do away with all the other food all together and be 100% desserts every day.
Just in life, generally.
It's the most important part of a menu after all :)
Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
Pamela and I are going to a crepe place on Saturday for lunch. 100% chance I will not get a "lunch" crepe because the dessert crepes are much better. I keep wanting to get the kids one that has candy floss in it but I never do. Perhaps this time it'll finally happen.
Candy floss in a dessert! This sounds amazing.
whaaat? Candy floss and dessert sounds like an epic combination. australia is full of wonderful ideas.
except for the fact they call it fairy floss, they lose points for that
as a contributor to the male variety of gender and to protect any speck of masculinity, now it is simply impossible for me to have fairy floss.
"Murray thinks of himself as a potential winner here."
Uh oh.
you think he would have learned his lesson by now
"Adrian Newey says Mark Webber's gearbox problem this morning was caused by a cut wiring loom." @NobelF1
Not sure if that is information or a confession
He later went onto say "And I would've gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddlin' kids"
:)
FP2 results ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/monaco-2011-free-practice-2-results
Don't mess it up now Andy, you're nearly there!
Mr Murray must get through loads of wrist band things.
Heheh!
at least he didn't throw his shoes into the crowd like Novak at the AO :D
Wha? You could knock someone out!
My analysis of today's game is that andy was preparing for Wimbledon by playing a scrappy match where he will make it as scrappy for himself as possible to get the win, the true way of a British player at wimbledon. Although the win bit is a bonus.
he also threw his shirt and his racquet. I think he was excited :D
You could definitely kill someone with a flying racquet.
for sure, luckily everything went to a noisy bunch of Serb fans so I assume they were paying attention!

What's been happening in GP2? Buxton says: I am genuinely a little disgusted with what I've just seen. You cannot drive like that in Monaco. Grow up or go race something else.
Haven't seen anything at all
Will continues:
I get it. It's a frustrating place to qualify. But you can't let those frustrations boil over. It's just too bloody dangerous.
I'm talking, of course, about GP2 qualifying. Disgraceful driving by some people who should know better.
That said, hats off to @GvanderGarde who drove a stunning lap, and to Sam Bird, Bianchi and Valsecchi. Should be a good race.
I can only assume blocking.
I've seen a lot of GP2 drivers get stupidly overzealous there over the years, purely because it is Monaco.
Lucas di Grassi says " Sure it was the GP2 qualifying with most crashes I've seen! "
Intriguing.
None of the TV feed will show it though, so I'll have to wait for Autosport later
I'm going to go and get some fresh air. Still absolutely FUMING after GP2. Such a great championship, belittled by some thoughtless driving.
He's proper raging.
I can only imagine what his commentary would sound like
Does he commentate on qualifying or does he just do the races?
Although what the point of going onto Twitter and saying grrrrrrr i'm angry etc and not telling us what actually happened in GP2 is very annoying
I don't know, the only time I've ever seen any GP2 was live at Spa.
I don't even know what his voice sounds like :)
sorry, jeh peh deuuuuuu
He's hard to describe to be honest. Him and Karun do commentary for the races.
Going through tweets is providing a bit more light.
Glenn Freeman of AUTOSPORT: "Best way to describe #GP2 qualifying so far is farcical. More traffic backing up in the last part of the lap than you get on the M25."
Lots of red flags too, caused by collisions.
Sorry, I should say they commentary for the world feed, as opposed to Eurosport or Speed TV
ahh I assume if its on here at all it'd be on one of those two channels. I don't know, I only use my sports package for tennis :D
And don't forget Jeh peh twaaaaaaaaaaaa!
:D
??
GP2 & GP3 as spoken in Wallonian-accented French...
The amount of times that made us giggle at spa :)
Ahhh I see... Well, at least I won't be hearing GP3's rather... ehhh... interesting engine sounds this weekend
So you're not mowing the lawn any time soon then?
Hahaa - they are the least evocative sounding cars I've ever seen
Totally agree. IIRC we didn't bother watching them much.
Interesting racing - it's just..... that...... sound.....
RG just found out that VivaF1 is on the front page of the guardian, bottom left in "Our Favourite Things This Week": http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport !!!
sweet
Cool!
Wow! :D
Nice
Wow - the rain here is just mental
I've only read back a few comments so I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, it could potentially lead to one, both or neither team having to change liveries?
Judgement on Group Lotus v Team Lotus expected tomorrow, Friday, from 2pm UK time. Will have reaction on #BBCF1
We've had a gentle drizzle on and off..
Ooooohhh...
That was from Ted on Twitter
We've had three separate heavy rain storms in the last 90 minutes. Skies are dark grey
Really? That'll be huge. I hope Team Lotus brought their Caterham stickers. Group Lotus... they'll have a blank rear wing, I suppose.
That said, whoever loses will likely appeal, so execution of the verdict may not happen this weekend anyway.
That's true and probably likely.
Shall we have more #KimiNews from @NateRyan at today's presser?
- Kimi Raikkonen: Never has driven in a Nationwide car before. Gonna go try it in a couple hours. Glad to know the track.
- Kimi Raikkonen on Cup: Always a possibility. I am more keen to do road courses.
- Kimi Raikkonen on Sonoma: "It would be nice to go and do it. We'll see what happens. Has to go back and "do some rally stuff" first
- That Kimi Raikkonen news conference was all of 6 minutes, 31 seconds & revealed not much but still am digging covering this guy.
- Kimi Raikkonen (and the rather large tattoo on his right wrist) in the media center. #nascar http://twitpic.com/52t9sa

"Is my accent like Kimi's? I know he was in here before me." -- Elliott Sadler
- @MartySmithESPN
:)
That must be kind of like #TedNews only much more Finnish.
So I had a nice but odd experience last night...
Mrs. Goat's brother in law's brother in law asked us to pick up some sort of mixer (a Yamaha OIV 96 if you must know...) for him and he'd pick it up later. When we went round to his flat, it turns out he's a total hippie, with TONS of CD's and the walls are covered in Music paraphernalia. We went into the room where the mixer was and it was like a sound studio in a cupboard - soundproofing, a mixing desk and a synthesizer (which he demoed for us).
Turns out he's in a band called Øresund Space Collective, which is some sort of synthesized instrumental space rock - he gave me a CD to listen to and I must admit I quite like it: http://www.myspace.com/oresundspacecollective
So yeah, a cool encounter and the mixer is heavy! 20 kilos!
Video of the GP2 qualifying is available http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rm2BMM71S14&feature=youtu.be
Afternoon/Evening!
Hullo Mr Bassano, how are you this afternoon?
that was just awful, even team mates collided. how can they be that bad??
Drying off. Luckily, just from the walk through Sainsbury's car park but it was mighty Belgian out there :D
cool!
Have you watched GP2? I think it keeps the carbon fibre industry in rich profits :D
I have done, but I've never seen them as bad as that. I wonder what some of them were thinking, it was quali not a race.
Worrying that they are the 'future' of F1 ;)
There's a reason most of the drivers wash out at this point...
Dear oh dear
Most of those were due to stupidity. I would love to know where Grosjean left his brain while he was flying past cars when the white flag was out.
Grosjean and his team mate clearly were not watching Rascasse when Alonso almost drove through Massa or they would not have ended up both occupying the same piece of track. That was so dangerous
Sam Bird was just cruising in front of Marcos Ericsson. Clearly Bird had already set a time to go second on the grid so I hope he gets a hefty penalty for cruising on the racing line preventing anyone else from setting a quick time.
True
Not all make it, Pastor did and it shows ;)
Need to pop out, catch you guys later
Almost happened with Ferrari earlier. Alonso flat out while Massa was pactically stopped trying to make a gap. Alonso missed him by inches

Anyone know where I can get a feed of Kimi's current practice session in Charlotte?....
Try p2p4u.net

Inconsistent pic but I can get good commentary....
Normally it will settle down after a couple of minutes
I also have the lap time thingy from nascar.com.... and Kimi currently 16th...

Here is an update from @Feeder_Series, the confusingly-named official Twitter account of GP2 (much to Jon's chagrin):
Grosjean, Ericsson and van der Garde penalised. All 3 drivers will lose 5 grid positions for tomorrow. F
This is an incredibly harsh penalty for Grosjean, who was already going to start last...
That is odd. It's kind of like the old basic snake game
I am surprised those are all the penalties
Time to settle down with some dinner and FP1, Monaco being one of the few I watch in the year, fullscreen I reckon. :)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13545386
Yo :)
hehe, every time I meet Brits or also with some of my Thai friends I have this problem. #sorryPamela
Kathi!
How are you, surviving the fallout?
Hey Alison, que pasa?
:)
yay kathi is around! We have been wondering how you are doing
No dust up here in the north. The snow is the bigger problem.
Pamela is neither Thai nor British as far as I am aware :D
Does this mean Germans do not engage in small talk?
And lambing season, still keeping you busy?
My phone battery died about an hour ago. I've dug the charger out and have chosen just this very moment to misplace the phone.... Boooo!!
:P fine every time I meet well-mannered people

Don't worry, it's probably only a drunken text from Nick about the Kettle migrating back to the fridge
I'm tired. I need to set my work alarm for the morning or I might drop off and forget to do it :P
I can't believe there was a red flag for a bit of water
If so, I like Germans. Small talk is hard.

I wouldn't mind looking into that but it's my best friend's birthday weekend

well in this case Pamela was asking me if I would mind if she moved the drying rack and I can't quite remember what I said sth like no why would I in an annoyed tone and Emma had to intervene and say that no of course I wouldn't mind. It would have never crossed my mind to ask if somebody as something against me moving the thing if it's in the way.
Well, that is super polite [especially around new people] and understandable [if illogical]
Small talk is much, much worse
:)
Is Monaco unique in not having a two compound gap?
Soft & Super Soft this weekend
For all she knew you might love it there. You could have arranged the whole room around it :P
It can be hard on the very few but it's the wrong environment to work in if it cannot be dealt with
For understandable reasons, it needs to be as stress free as possible. Bottling your emotions makes for bad decisions in that zone. When someone irritates, you can express it with a smile, the point is taken and we all move one
This is true, I wish I had thought of that back then [don't think I was there though]
Why am I the last to find out? :-)
It just makes me incredible insecure. How to explain ...
When I grew up I was taught (as are most) to always say please if I wanted something and over time it became second nature. In Finnish there is no word for please. So if a Finn asks me for something in English they tend not to add please because it isn't second nature and people might think they are rude when they really aren't. And it was the same for me in Spa. I could see that you (plural general you) were bit taken back by my behaviour but I didn't know how to change it to fit in better I guess.
You found out before me but it's probably higher on your need to know list than mine ;)
Ah yeah, I think that's because sometimes when something gets moved the person who put it there can be unrealistically annoyed, which never really made sense to me..
canada is having the same allocation of supersoft and soft
would guess that singapore will too
Yeah I wouldn't last five minutes. :)
Can understand that..
Wow
That's quite unique
I don't have an issue with it but I have associated with many types of Europeans and recognise the cultural differences. It is strange for some who have experienced less outside of UK shores
Was the same last year too, don't think it is unique, just unusual
So what happened to the two compound gap?
I didn't know that about the Finnish, that explains why the drivers are perceived as being a bit blunt I suppose.
At Spa I suppose it was just unfamiliarity on everyone's part.
medium is too hard for monaco.
it's not only slower than the soft tyre it has a shorter lifespan because of low grip, there's nothing going for it as a tyre choice
I think 'The Black Death' was a Bonding Concoction, more people should have tried it :D
They also don't have gender specific personal pronouns. Which is why Mika sometimes mixed up he and she :)
High speed Montreal should be able to deal with Medium though, surely?
I sort of wish I had but I've got a thing against lots of spirits after I blacked out once..
Interesting
can't remember if bridgestone did supersoft and medium at montreal last year but that's not what pirelli fancy
Finnish is quite unusual in the 'Nordic' region languages, isn't it?
:) :)
Every time I've been in an environment like that it's fallen apart in 10 minutes or less and any possibility of work has been forgotten in the escalating mockery/sarcasm wars. Maybe because I've never worked in engineering.
It isn't a Germanic language like the rest. It has more in common with Japanese than Swedish (at least if you only look at the grammar)
I thought so
Finnish is unusual compared to any other language
With great difficulty due to the low grip (F1 is typically the first event there of the year after defrosting).
Banter goes both ways or it becomes an elephant in the room
Makes sense
Ah, OK.
The Gaelics sound very odd to my ears but they have roots in Germany too, apparently
Yeah if the other person isn't involved, I think I might expect to get a bullying allegation....
Fine line sometimes
I have never got close to Gaelic so I know that the words don't sound like they should when you see them written and there are loads of unpronounced letters on the end of names. But I have no idea what other languages they are related to.
I'd be slightly worried by this

Is that a wasp as thick as curtain pole??? Let me never go there....
I think it's a Hornet [buzzin'?]
And as long, not thick

It is thick if it thought sharing a room with Mark Webber was a good idea...
But it is like 3 inches long??? I can't believe something that big could fly... I feel upset that thingslike that share a continent with me.
You've never met a Belgian, they are far stranger
I wrote that but then I thought I'd get some smart alec remark about it not being as long as the curtain pole (thank goodness for that....) so I changed it.
Maybe Helmut Marko put it there to give Mark another distracting injury
:)
As long as a curtain pole's diameter ;)
Or a Dutch campsite owner with a minibus.
The end of the scale :D
Glad we've cleared that up....
Did you find your phone in your PJs?
I thought it was in the car?
Just be glad you didn't meet the inspection dragon *shudders*

Uh huh
I'm pretty sure I must have dropped it out my handbag onto the seat/floor in the car :D
She was looking for it in her PJs
yes, they used supersoft and medium - and got a great race for their troubles
View from Seattle.
Great race (except for the end) - on Mr. C's scale it must rank a 9.982356476543987, no?
As for Mr. Hamilton - greatly impressed by his talent from day one. Talent without discipline, however, equals loudmouthed prima dona. I always appreciate aggressiveness, but if he's going to be aggressive and the results go badly, he bloody well needs to own up to it and stop blaming everyone else for his mush-brained mavouevers. Hard to respect, let alone like, a driver like him.
Sporting regs need to change: no working on cars (especially tire changes) while under red flag. Ruined the whole end of the race.
Getting up at 04:30 is tough, but worth it. At least next race is close to home.
