Frederiksborg Slot - a lovely day out :)

Hey guys – hope your week is going well.  Happy birthday yesterday to Ivan Capelli and while we are on that subject, Congratulations to Sidepodcast for reaching ONE MILLION COMMENTS! That is an awesome achievement! And Happy Towel Day, everyone!

There’s only 1 more day until the action at the next Grand Prix begins, as Monaco always has Free Practice on a Thursday.  Joe is driving down with DT, Mercedes and Ferrari are rushing to get everything there on time (and to restructure the team).  BadgerGP have a list of their Top 5 Monaco Grands Prix – some classic races in there too.  Viva F1 have a great preview while  Renault think they have a great chance of winning, and you can read a great interview with their drivers here along with some amusing cartoons from Spain

However, it looks like there was a bit of a fire at Ste. Devote – a truck was burnt to pieces which apparently damaged the asphalt.  I wonder how that will affect the race this weekend?

If you can’t drive the track in real life, why not check out this amazing slot car replica of Monaco?  That’s much better than the Scalextric I used to have when I was a kid…

Mark Hughes, has an analysis of the differences in pace between Red Bull and McLaren.  But to be honest, he doesn’t really come to any meaningful conclusions.  What do you think makes the Red Bull so fast?

Jarno Trulli became the most overtaken driver during their career in Spain – 270 times!  Yay for the Trulli Train!

The FIA have decided (in a knee jerk reaction after the disbelief in the way the stewards handled the Spanish Grand Prix) to implement a sort of “Three Strikes” rule towards reprimands.  Quite.  DI Blundell wasn't too chatty after the race, probably for good reason ;)

Here’s some great photos of design details from the Cahier Archive.  Unlike some other sites, who are using photos without permission…

Ever wondered what a Le Mans driver has to endure?  Maybe Allan McNish can help explain it to you?  And if you haven’t seen it yet, you MUST see Truth in 24

Christine has posted her Team and Driver Rankings – lots of good links to check out and some great points allocations there!  She’s also posted the next link in her A-Z Adventure and 30 Day song challenge too.

How is your running going?  Amy had a great run the other day, and Christine is doing really well with her training.  I ran intervals the other day because I want to run a sub 30 minute 5km race at the end of the year, and I plan to run around the turtle with my buddy today.  I’ll let you know how it goes!

Lukeh has explained the sketching process behind his brilliant Bay Church sketch – some great tips in there too!  Bassano found some creepy pics of old cisterns – they look very brightly lit up though?  A Lego A Day has a great pic of a Star Wars Rock Band, while The Big Picture has a set on Iceland’s latest attempt to mess up the rest of Europe.  Kathi, I hope you and the lambs are ok!

Some sad news.  Denmark has banned Marmite!  Not that I care much for the stuff, but the shop quoted in the article is a Mecca for all foods British and I’ve become a bit of a regular there ;)

Finally, I’ve been taking a few pics lately – the one embedded in the post is from a trip to a lovely castle called Frederiksborg, and I also ran into some Classic Race Cars in the middle of town the other day.

Enjoy your day, keep smiling and see you in the comments!

Congratulations Sidepodcast and thank you, Gavin, for reminding us of Towel Day!

    Woooo for Towel Day!

    Excellent daily Gavin :)

  • Steven Roy24/05/2011 at 23:12

Don't forget your towel today. Or any day for that matter. You should always know where your towel is

  • Alianora La Canta24/05/2011 at 23:12

The reprimand situation was previously two-strikes and a more severe penalty, but only if they were for the same type of incident (so two blocking incidents escalated the penalty but not one block and one avoidable collision).

  • Lukeh24/05/2011 at 23:12

    so. many. awesome. links.

Those lego star wars rock bands are amazing. Also, I know Marmite is evil and everything but that is kind of crazy!

The 3rd spacewalk of the shuttle mission is due to start at 1:46am Eastern / 6:46am UK.

It looks like the Spirit rover on Mars is finally dead. It has been running for 7 years and was originally only meant to last a few months so we have learned way more from it than could ever have been expected.

I'd like to send the mouse that is in my wall to go look for the frozen robot on Mars. Get 'im outta here! He's loud.

It's one of the ones that Lucas broke because I remember seeing his legs and him jumping around. It was wrong in all kinds of ways.

He sounds like he is doing mousey gymnastics in there! What is he DOING?

  • Steven Roy25/05/2011 at 01:41

It's one of the ones that Lucas broke because I remember seeing his legs and him jumping around. It was wrong in all kinds of ways.

I will never understand how he went so wrong in those films. I think there was too much of a gap between 3 and 4 or 6 and 1 if you look at it that way. The really bad thing is there were originally 9 films with 7-9 being the last three to be made but after the last one he decided not to do them. WHo would voluntarily not make 3 Star Wars movies?

  • Steven Roy25/05/2011 at 01:42

Return of the Jedi, shortly before Luke gets his mission to the second Death Star.

I have seen all those films several times but I have no sense in my head of what is in which film or any particular sequence beyond the basic story.

  • Steven Roy25/05/2011 at 01:42

He sounds like he is doing mousey gymnastics in there! What is he DOING?

Maybe he is trying to tunnel out

The dude who thought of Jar Jar Binks.

  • Alianora La Canta25/05/2011 at 01:43

WHo would voluntarily not make 3 Star Wars movies?

Someone who changed his mind about what story the Star Wars films were telling twice during the time he was writing the first trilogy. I think the one which caused him to drop the sequels, but during the 1990s there appeared to be a rule that nobody could write more than 25 years after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, maybe in case George changed his mind.

Also, there is a Clone Wars film, so there is a Star Wars 7 (or should that be 2.5?)

  • Kai25/05/2011 at 01:44

Maybe he is trying to tunnel out

I'm ready to cut a whole in the wall and let him out myself. That or get a shotgun and blow the hell outta that wall. It's a toss up.

There had to be drugs involved in that

  • Alianora La Canta25/05/2011 at 01:45

I have seen all those films several times but I have no sense in my head of what is in which film or any particular sequence beyond the basic story.

It's the last of the old trilogy. Luke went back to Dagobah a short way into the film to complete his training. He has an argument with Obi-Wan Kenobi (again), then resolves to complete his training. Unfortunately Yoda decides not to do so and that is his death scene.

  • Kai25/05/2011 at 01:45

Maybe he is trying to tunnel out

I've found some friends for the photographers. The Tennis Writers Association have asked Roland Garros to stop posting full press conference transcripts on their website so that fans can't read them. The writers have promised to give "relevant quotes" instead and now the multitudes of bloggers can't write stories. Absolutely stupid.

It's the same everywhere, Everyone who has been in a closed shop for years wants all progress stopped. Just shows how many journalists have not had an original thought in their lives and just re-has press releases and press conferences. Now everyone has access to that they have to put some effort in and have some real ability to get paid.

"We are very sorry, we have been asked by the International Tennis Writers Association not to release transcripts of post-match interviews so as not to disadvantage reporters here at the French Open. You can find many of the relevant quotes in the articles posted on our website"

What a joke. By not seeing what questions the journos are actually asking it's impossible to know what an answer actually means. I've read plenty of stories about Federer throwing tanties but when you read the actual transcript he's given a perfectly acceptable answer to a ridiculous question. The journos clearly try to push players into saying things that make good stories and now we can't even get the truth behind them.

I listened to an interesting think on the radio the yesterday about how the shuttle has set back space exploration heavily over its lifespan.

Nasa went from focusing on a deep space capable system to one which was only capable of shallow earth orbit.

It was a great bit of tech, but ultimatly so expensive it took nasa away from bigger projects

This pic that you liked: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rubbergoat/5714065254/in/set-72157626581609797/ - that was taken from a boat jetty on the lake, while on my knees to get more of the lake in the shot. However according to @Pearcesport no one in the whole country seems to know anyone who has had money taken despite their promise to have 60% of people done by midnight tonight.

I will only say that I'm worried

  • Alex Andronov25/05/2011 at 09:38

I can confirm no money has gone from mine yet.

  • Amy25/05/2011 at 09:39

well, remains to be seen what happens with all that is build in London after the Olympics ... but lots of white elephants left behind in China (not talking the other implications it had and still has on lives of many...) and all of Europe is paying for the Athens Olympics bill ... and all this so people can count number of medals...

it just reminds me of the people who whine about the GP here every year "rarrr I don't like it so it shouldn't exist, how dare you spend my taxes on it"

I don't use buses, hospitals or schools but I don't whine about my precious taxes going towards them.

And what about the millions of people who DO want to go? I've wanted to go for years and years and years and years and everytime I mention my excitement theres always someone waiting to tell me why it sucks and why I shouldn't want to go.

  • Amy25/05/2011 at 09:40

    "Dear FanVision Customer,

If you will be using your G3 at the Grand Prix in Monaco, the activation code is XXXX."

I wonder when they're going to get their fancy web system up and running.

well, yes, but one should think about number of people who want to go vs number of people who pay for that. I am sure if ticket prices reflected the cost of hosting the venues would be empty ... Maybe F1 is a good example - Olympics almost bancrupted Montreal, F1 does not and they pay for it year after year and when they missed out one year they quickly came up with the $$$ ....

Apparently the Sydney Olympics cost the country 2.1 billion, the country is still here.

I know that its expensive and every nation that hosts it has lost billions for the last however many times yet still people keep bidding to host it. There must be some reason for that.

1992 was the last time an Olympics broke even (Madrid). It can be done if the bidders don't get carried away.

The UK average is 7 pounds 8 ounces (3400grams)

  • F1Wolf25/05/2011 at 09:55

ah well, we spent $46 million on bidding for the football world cup and have absolutely nothing to show for it :D

and so have all the failed bidders for Olympics ...

do not take me wrong, I have nothing against fundamental idea of Olympics. but what I am against is the massive cost involved paid for by governments that are already in huge debt ... living beyond means just so people can for 2 weeks pretend they do care about shooting, takewondo, rhytmic gymnastic or football with 3rd rate teams fielded etc ...

None. I don't care and if I did, I'd still be living in the UK or NZ or something. Going to that shop is good for a laugh once in a while but I don't get regular supplies from there. Denmark has plenty of nice foods anyway.

I am trying to search the release dates of the Senna movie in this part of the world, if not for cinema than at least on a disk. No luck getting the info I am looking for (probably there isn't any) but I do get within seconds lots of links for download of the movie ... Obvious consequence of the fact that the movie simply isn't legally available over a half year since it was first shown to selected few ... And then the studios complain about piracy ... They never learn ...

K - I have an interview with Pippa Mann later on. Got a list of stuff sorted, but does anyone have any questions they might want me to ask her?

Would it be cheaper to stay at home when quali & practice are on, then just buy someone elses seat on the grid and turn up on race day?

    Ho-hum!

  • Leigh O'Gorman25/05/2011 at 12:43

    Essentially, I have -

Tell me your feelings as we get closer to the event?

How did you deal with that tensions on Bump Day?

    Thoughts about the circuit itself.

How has she found them jump to IndyCar?

Future drives this season, next and how the Indy500 influences those possibilities.

    Budgetary / sponsorship difficulties?

What changed her approach following her 2010 hand injury?

  • RubberGoat25/05/2011 at 12:44

K - I have an interview with Pippa Mann later on. Got a list of stuff sorted, but does anyone have any questions they might want me to ask her?

What was the difference between qualifying and not qualifying? How did the team find the extra speed she needed between final practice and qualifying?

  • RubberGoat25/05/2011 at 12:44

When is the Indy 500? This sunday?

  • Leigh O'Gorman25/05/2011 at 12:44

Not sure about that - it was thought for a while that Saavedra might buy her seat, but Eric Bachelard said a firm "no" on Monday night.

  • Amy25/05/2011 at 13:19

I have no idea, I assume not since the wedding is on Saturday. Then again my parents don't have Sky and their internet may not be up to streaming.

I don't like missing any sessions though.

  • Nick25/05/2011 at 13:34

I have just decided i want a holiday...

Havent had one for ages, that involved me staying at a hotel rather than with family

I guess its just a case of where and when and how!

  • Christine25/05/2011 at 13:35

You'll want Amy for that. She's good at planning.

  • Amy25/05/2011 at 13:36

I was going to say that Alison seems to use all her holiday hours coming to visit so maybe it'd be nice to return the favour, but I don't think that would come under a 'staying at a hotel' holiday.

  • Leigh O'Gorman25/05/2011 at 13:43

A shocking confession - that new single by Lena is actually pretty good

@Tennisreporters I had some interesting things from Woznaicki I was going to report, but since I'm getting unfairly slammed due to a faulty column by an intern I'm going off Twitter 4 day to report elsewhere. Maybe those who ripped me can ask the intern to come to Paris & report herself

Red Bull's strength is in high speed aero and there is not much of that in Monaco. If they win this race the season is over

ya know, I was thinking the other day... if it was Webber, Button, or Hamilton dominating the season like Vettel currently is, I'd be like "WOOHOO!!!", but I'm not woohoo, I'm "this is BORING" (at least the drivers championship)

Corrected. :D Mind you, I don't think it's THAT boring, but it's surely not as exciting as previous years.

I mayve have overstated the boringness, because the races for places 2 - 24 have been exciting, with the occassional interesting battle for the lead.

The aviation industry has been Imperial for years and then Airbus came along and started building things in Metric

I still don't understand how the French & British collaborated on building an aircraft together, capable of Supersonic speeds, when they both were using different rulers

Di Resta said he had been on a track walk with the BBC when the lorry fire started – so he witnessed the event for himself.
