Hey, it’s Gavin from ‘Making Up The Numbers’ here, introducing you to a brand new Wednesday! It’s the Wednesday before the weekend of the Turkish Grand Prix, the Indy 500, Eurovision and my flatwarming too...

  • In F1 news, Joe Saward has been blogging about a new US F1 bid. Let’s hope that they actually get things right this time.
  • Apparently the lovely city of Austin, Texas will host the US Grand Prix from 2012 to 2021. It was announced on F1.com last night and Joe blogged his thoughts too. Dan has offered to host a Sidepodmeetup for the inaugural race :D
  • James Allen has been blogging about Luca Di Montezemolo’s interviews to coincide with Ferrari’s celebration of 800 Grand Prix starts. Apparently, he has forgiven Alonso’s mistakes, proposed the scrapping of Friday practice in favour of in-season testing and would not be drawn on Massa’s future…
  • The SidePodMeetup at PureTech Racing is gaining momentum, with PTR themselves joining twitter and asking for people to spread the word – which is cool, because they are retweeting the SPC Meetup too!
  • Here’s one for the IndyCar guys: a technical summary of the proposed 2012 Chassis designs. I like the Lola myself…
  • Yesterday was Argentina’s Bicentennial Day, so Feliz Cumpleaños Argentina!
  • Also, it was Geek Pride Day, Towel Day and 'Glorious 25th May' for fans of Terry Pratchett's Discworld yesterday too, so everybody should be celebrating
  • Mr. C. has linked to an awesome site called Ninite – which looks like an easy way to setup a new PC by allowing you to choose the essential programs you want and download them in one easy package...
  • Finally in a series of ‘Websites Gavin Likes’, I have a car culture site for you this week. It’s called SpeedHunters and it’s a blog created by the guys behind the Need For Speed series. I like it because it has a wide range of articles, from Drifting, to Custom Cars, Race Reports and everything in between. I personally like the site because it has a lot of great photos on it, and I must admit to downloading a few nice desktops from the site. Tasty!

That’s all from me, I hope you liked the links and that you have a great day. I’ll see you in the comments, eh?

I'm dead serious. We need to do this. Flights into Houston or Dallas shouldn't be that bad since they are the hubs of American Airlines and Continental Airlines.

Then again I am getting wayyyyYYYyyyyy ahead of myself.

Integrated instant messaging in new iPlayer lets you see what Windows Live contacts are watching, & sync your playback to theirs

I got a little excited by this video

It has Catherine! And her sister! And Heikki's future mother in law! And they scarily all look exactly the same.

her line is sooo awful. Her doubles dress is slightly better though.

I think its the PCD signature dance move. One of them does it in every single music videos of theirs I have ever seen.

She really did have somewhat of an advantage coming into this show.

  • Marilene Riddle26/05/2010 at 09:29

just to share files? that's a pretty fail from the bbc.

  • Christine26/05/2010 at 11:48

    No worries. He gets through.

  • Christine26/05/2010 at 11:57

How so? Did it not grab the file properly?

The first time, I had stacks of stuff downloaded and woke up to find it had all disappeared. Just vanished. "You have not downloaded anything yet, why not visit the iPlayer to find something to watch."

The second time, I downloaded some bits and pieces, and it said things had timed out when they were still available to stream and it was a complete mess.

Streaming is good enough for me.

  • Amy26/05/2010 at 12:03

the players on Suzanne Lenglen have been smart, bageling all over the place to get through the matches before the rain comes :D

  • RubberGoat26/05/2010 at 12:04

does the sharing of files not kill your bandwidth?

    Sharing... like torrenting?

  • Marilene Riddle26/05/2010 at 12:05

the players on Suzanne Lenglen have been smart, bageling all over the place to get through the matches before the rain comes :D

    Agreed.

    Interesting stat: Winners-Errors

    Feds: 21-22

    Falla: 16-10

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2010 at 12:05

Streaming is good enough for me.

Often for me it's the reverse, streaming kills my bandwidth where as downloading dosent. Plus I hardly ever want to/have the time to watch something when i find it. Downloading i get 30 days so i can do it when i have time.

  • Christine26/05/2010 at 12:06

removing iplayer also solved a lot of our live streaming buffering issues.

  • Christine26/05/2010 at 12:08

No idea. Been burned twice, that's enough for me.

  • me26/05/2010 at 12:08

iplayer has a built in torrent sharing thing. anything you download, you share.

  • Pat W26/05/2010 at 12:14

    Hello.

I am using 50% CPU on start up to share using Kservice

Kservice is a horrible horrible little program. iPlayer and 4OD both use it and it hogs resources like anything. I was glad when both moved away from the original downloaded apps into the web version, it stopped it from happening and I've not downloaded anything from either since, all streaming.

  • Marilene Riddle26/05/2010 at 12:14

hmm, I might fill my rain delay with some Lost.

Hey wait! They might be resuming now.

    Or not.

  • Marilene Riddle26/05/2010 at 12:15

:D Can't wait. Especially since a certain Finn wasn't in NZ.

    perhaps it's intentionally throttled then?

In other TV on PC-related news, I bought a foldout couch bed thingy from IKEA at the weekend, so I now have a rather nice sofa to watch TV on my PC on :D

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2010 at 12:24

    perhaps it's intentionally throttled then?

I could see why streaming may be limited but you'd have though downloading would be down aswell. I download a few GB's worth of programs a week, and there hardly ever any issues

probs a quality of service thing. packet loss will kill your live stream. if there are other people skyping or whatever, you're done for.

oh Roger, your through the legs trick shot was more impressive the first time.

  • Amy26/05/2010 at 12:33

won't you forget where you are?

it was quite handy, the tennis came back on just as Lost went to an adbreak I was about to fastforward so it was a natural break in the story. I'm only about 12 minutes in, nothing major to keep track of so far.

  • Lukeh26/05/2010 at 12:33

    What's he done?

  • Pat W26/05/2010 at 12:39

I'm becoming a fan of Jonathan Neale of McLaren, some really good thought processes on the US and on car development. Essentially saying "well this is what we're doing, let's see where we end up", rather than bragging before the event.. After a few months of Whitmarsh I was getting a bit fed up with the team, think I'll pay this guy more attention..

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83886

  • Amy26/05/2010 at 12:39

    What's he done?

he pretty much deliberately tanked his match, then he decided that 'bah tennis sucks I'm going home' and pulled out of doubles, when I adore his doubles partner and feel bad for him. Then to cap it off, he deleted his twitter (gasp!)

  • Marilene Riddle26/05/2010 at 12:40

    What's he done?

It is more of what he is not going to do actually.

Withdrew from his match and left Isner hanging.

    I hate NASA

I checked last night to see when today's first landing slot was and they said there were going to be showers in the area which always means it doesn't happen. So I check in just after landing time to see if they are going for the second window and they had landed it already.

Typical NASA. Just as they are about to ground the shuttles they have learned to run them to schedule.

Two more to go so I am not trusting any of their forecasts any more.

    Lyric:

I know that when I say this,

    I may be stepping on pins and needles;

But I don't like all these people

slagging her for breaking up the Beatles.

    (Don't blame it on Yokey)

if I was John and you were Yoko,

I would gladly give up musical genius,

just to have you as my very own, personal Venus.

Doesn't make sense to me. Do twitter own our tweets? If not how can they charge someone for using someone else's tweet? That is just a variation on GMM.

Does that include charging people for using them? I guess the other issue is what dictates whether something is based on a tweet. If sidepodcast do another sidepodradio day and I tweet about it linking to your original post and someone writes something because they saw the tweet does that mean twitter is due a payment? This is guaranteed to fail for me

I think what they are saying is, if you have a widget on your site showing your tweets and that widget has an ad with it, they want paying. I don't know whether your own logo would count as an ad.

Surely your example would be fine..

What difference does it make to twitter whether you use his site or theirs or tweetdeck? All he is doing is sorting out tweets that appeal to a particular group. Had twitter done a better job they would have streams appealing to all sorts of interest groups.

I have heard about that on TWIT. They were discussing Starbuck's feeding special tweets into the streams of people who are following them which seems odd. That is like you advertising sidepodcast to people who follow you

as i understand it, you buy on hastags, right? so we'd promote to people who hashtag #f1 not #sidepodcast.

  • Pat W26/05/2010 at 15:43

I can't believe they are putting the bridge back after dismantling it

They should put it in the grounds or at the entrance or something.

  • Steven Roy26/05/2010 at 15:45

They should put it in the grounds or at the entrance or something.

Gillett's plan was to erect it elsewhere on the site. It was only moved because Bridgestone didn't want a Dunlop ad on the track

  • Steven Roy26/05/2010 at 15:46

Where's the entrance? Can't see it fitting near the car Museum...

THe museum is outside the boundary wall of the circuit

    There's one at the chicane.

Tbh I used the bridge in '03 or whenever it was, it was a tatty old thing then and if they are making the place look nice it wouldn't be in keeping. Unless it can be sympathetically refurbished of course.

  • Pat W26/05/2010 at 15:55

I forgot to mention, when I went to Silverstone I took a photo of the remains of the bridge at the front straight seeing as Christine and Mr C loved it so :)

will share when i get home

are they putting the silverstone bridge back? it'd have to be huge now.

for years it was falling to pieces and the same year they fixed it up... it was pulled down.

  • Alex Andronov26/05/2010 at 16:04

what contribution is james making beyond paying for the hosting. i can see twitter getting annoyed at that.

I think that's exactly the point

  • Alex Andronov26/05/2010 at 16:05

What difference does it make to twitter whether you use his site or theirs or tweetdeck? All he is doing is sorting out tweets that appeal to a particular group. Had twitter done a better job they would have streams appealing to all sorts of interest groups.

It makes a difference when twitter gets paid by adverts on their site and you are using their infrastructure to not show their ads.

  • me26/05/2010 at 16:07

I think they are very close to making some big changes over there. The reliability is way up (which was a block to making big money). I heard some really really insane thing that Jason C. apparently has been pressuring Ev into making a deal with the Farmville people to make some kind of weird network to undercut Facebook.

No no, they are taking all the examples they have and the rest are being brought over by their various owners. It's amazing Clive's managed to get them gathered all in one place.

  • Steven Roy26/05/2010 at 19:20

Most teams never kept examples of all their cars. They canabilised them into the following year's model and binned anything they didn't need. There are loads of iconic Ferraris for example that no longer exist.

oh dear mr c. what will we do without this reverable calendar?

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2010 at 22:23

this could kill james allen's site:

    In cases where Twitter content is the basis (in whole or in part) of the advertising sale, we require you to compensate us. For example, you may sell sponsorships or branding around gadgets or iframes that include Tweets and other customized visualizations of Twitter. {Comment #307}

I would have appreciated this better if:

    a) Twitter had bothered to tell me it had updated its terms and conditions - if Facebook can do it, so can Twitter, and

    b) it had made it clear what constituted an "advertising sale". Under what circumstances could Twitter legitimately demand payment?

  • me26/05/2010 at 22:25

    a) Twitter had bothered to tell me it had updated its terms and conditions - if Facebook can do it, so can Twitter, and

you aren't using its api though are you?

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2010 at 22:26

    Doesn't make sense to me. Do twitter own our tweets? If not how can they charge someone for using someone else's tweet? That is just a variation on GMM. {Comment #310}

Twitter doesn't own our tweets but it does distribute them. Just as the post service is entitled to charge for providing postal services for letters they do not own and broadband suppliers are entitled to charge for delivering internet information they don't own, so Twitter can charge for distributing information it does not own. The difference is that Twitter's only charging for some of the information it's transmitting and has only started doing so three years into its operation, which could be pretty confusing.

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2010 at 22:30

    a) Twitter had bothered to tell me it had updated its terms and conditions - if Facebook can do it, so can Twitter, and

    you aren't using its api though are you? {Comment #496}

Anyone who is using Twitter is using its API, one way or the other. I'm simply using the default web client for it - other people access the API indirectly through Tweetdeck, CoTweet, Twitter for iPhone or the many (mostly) third-party API clients that have been designed for Twitter.

The significance of tweets with "API" in the "from" section is that they're using unsigned clients, so all the central Twitter server network knows is that its API is in use (otherwise the tweet would never have arrived at the network).

  • me26/05/2010 at 22:31

no. this applies to people using their api directly.

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2010 at 22:34

    What difference does it make to twitter whether you use his site or theirs or tweetdeck? {Comment #327}

If I've understood correctly, the difference would be how the bill is generated, not whether there's a bill or who gets it...

    no. this applies to people using their api directly. {Comment #499}

OK. Though I've had another, possibly related thought: it's going to be a real pain in the neck for any third-party clients that contain ads (I don't know any off the top of my head but I could imagine there being some that pay for their hosting and bandwidth costs that way, and in effect they'd have to pay for every single use of their own software)...

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2010 at 22:39

    Had twitter done a better job they would have streams appealing to all sorts of interest groups. {Comment #327}

The "lists" function already does that. As a general rule, the people who use a system regularly usually know how to access what they want better than its creators.

Adam Cooper has been talking to the man in charge in Austin.

Highlights include him telling Tilke to build a fast track on hilly land they have already purchased and guess what the man himself has known Bernie since he was a teenager

It has been a long time since Bernie was a teenager.

That particular entry by Adam Cooper lead me to post this on my blog, which also refers to a SPC guest post by a certain Scottish regular.

  • Sebastian (Birmingham, UK)27/05/2010 at 02:44

  • Sebastian (Birmingham, UK)27/05/2010 at 02:48

we had it once before, no matter what he tried, jon used to do the same thing for a little while, then it went away.

what if you just paste the link in raw, without any 'a' tags?

Thinking about it, it did not happen the last time I linked a few days back but it did twice in a row before that.

    same browser each time?

  • Sebastian (Birmingham, UK)27/05/2010 at 03:00

Think so. IE 8. Until a while back, I used Firefox specifically for Realtime Commenting but noticed recently it was working with IE and have used that since.

I didn't know you had done an Aside. Comment trawling had its advantages.

  • Steven Roy27/05/2010 at 03:09

I seem to have missed a lot. I need to find a way to comment trawl without spending ages doing it.

Interesting. I plugged my previous post on Sunday afternoon with lots of people in the comments and got one referral several hours later. I plug a post when comments are quiet and I get six referrals.
