Good morning. It is going to be a lovely day for me with all my favourites playing tennis today, so I do wish it will be a good day for all of you too. In other (more F1 related) news:
- Amy suggests that F1 should also have a karaoke session Roland Garros style. I (heart)ily agree.
- Rubens Barrichello's awesomeness is spreading through Twitter. Are you following him yet?
- He is not the only one making waves though. Lukeh has been retweeted by Claire of Williams.
- Wet weather is not only invading the F1 season in real life, but also in virtual reality.
- Jon gets the job that everyone wants. Except for maybe the having to work with Darth part.
- Christine's rankings are up. Amy wants Heikki to overtake Karun, but the 9 point gap seems a little too large to overcome for now. Christine also blogs on Karun's 24th May in 2008.
- By the way, Karun also names his engines. Unlike Sebastian's habit, naming engines makes no sense since you will change it regularly and it may very well blow up. But whatever makes him happy, I guess.
- Alex Snell's highlights on his F1 world tour is now on Sidepodcast. I am really jealous indeed.
- Sidepodcast has been through a lot recently. Mr C blogs on what could have been, should have been, and how our homepage became what it is now. And has a word with Sir Geoff on what fans really want.
- England's 2012 Olympics doesn't seem to be proceeding along very well. I now really hope that the world cup doesn't end up there too. #supportsrussia
- Pat has a song to recommend. It is pretty catchy (and gets stuck in your head).
- I have been rather busy lately what with the Champions League final, the French Open and all. Yet I still found time to collate my pictures (taken on my handy Motorola Milestone) and blog on my visit to the Marina Bay Circuit. Warning: not dial-up friendly!
- And a very happy birthday to James!
This week is going to be a bumper weekend with F1 Turkish GP, WRC Rally Portugal and Indianapolis 500. Don't you wish the week would end already?
It's Tuesday
Yes it is.
Ping - http://betterwithakeyboard.wordpress.com/2010/05/24/song-of-the-day-2-we-were-promised-jetpacks-quiet-little-voices/
I've mentioned them before. You might like it, you might not.
And that's one hell of a long link.
eek. I need to edit something. Shall help you add that to the daily too.
Oh thanks, no need for that if you don't want to. :)
No problem at all.
that the lord i can finally use the internet again. stupid apple and stupid sky tv.
Ooh two daily mentions! woot! I also like the look of your tour around singapore, I will have to read properly and comment when I am not limited to a cell phone browser :D
how in the world do you keep track of so many comments marilene?
I just got birthday cake! only 6 weeks late :D
was it someone else's?
No its mine :D
Morning folks.
6 weeks late cake? Thanks heavens it didn't melt. ;)
Random thought: is Marilene Singaporean? Saw her Singapore video, and I didn't know she was from this part of the world...
Thankfully it was not purchased 6 weeks ago :D
Hehehehehehe. :D
you planning an international meetup?
She'd fit right in if and when Sidepodmanila (finally) pushes through.
This means you, Alex and Bassano! ;)
hehe :)
Thank you. :D
The permalink to pages help. ;)
Yes I am.
Sounds fun.
Cool! Have you been to any of the previous Singapore GPs?
No I haven't. No money. :P
I did go to the team/sponsors events though. Just to get a look at the drivers.
If tennis player Flavia Pennetta were a TV series… she'd be LOST.
http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/news/articles/2010-05-24/201005241274704440714.html
F1 should really learn from the French Open on how to do quirky stuff.
aren't the walkabout tix cheap, though? There was also that early bird discount on grandstand seats.
Wolf and I went to the first race in 08. We tried to meet up, but we were at opposite ends of the circuit! Amy went too, but she wasn't an SPCer yet back then, so we didn't know her. She is going again this year though. :D
oooh. Wasn't able to do that in SG. But I met more than a few of the drivers at Sepang last year. :)
We can't even match up with MotoGP silliness. Donuts are even banned!
You mean the 15-17% discounts? When they are charging $100+ ? I still think they are over charging. :(
My closest encounter was with Heikki, though is was more my gaping and him just passing by. :D
My French dream team: http://www.redbull.com/cs/Satellite/en_INT/Article/A-Loeb-Prost-dream-team-021242852021461?p=1242745960067
I am now really considering following RoC this year.
Hehe. :D Amy can teach you a lot about
stalkingmeeting Heikki. ;)A very strong lineup, but they'll get whooped by a Schumi-Vettel Team Deutschland. :D
If only because I like Sebastian, I'll let that one go. :P
Morning guys. Happy birthday James!!
Morning Lukeh. :)
Morning all.
Happy birthday James.
Who's bringing the cake?
Morning Christine.
Maybe we can persuade Lou to bake one?
Just a question....I have been subscribing to Sidepodcast for some time now but the f1 debriefs and audio's seem to have stopped....why? what am I doing wrong.....I re checked Itunes and seems fine but nothing coming......
Excellent daily as ever, Marilene :)
Em and Lou need to make a Tardis cake for James
Hi Darryl, we're taking a bit of a break at the moment. More info: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/04/10/downshifting/
My boss... it's his birthday today too ;)
Ooooh!
:D Thanks.
Sounds good. ;)
It could be bigger on the inside of the cake :D
Ooooh today is Towel Day!!
wha?
A day where you should carry a towel around all day to celebrate Douglas Adams :)
Well I do have a teatowel in my bag for my bike seat...
Better explanantion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towel_Day
i hope everyone is prepared for eurovision semifinal #1!
My flatwarming is on while Eurovision is...
I'm only watching the final, I prefer seeing the songs on the final night for the first time :)
Which countries are performing?
I couldn't remember if we did semis and the final last year, then I decided we must have because I definitely slept through the final and watched it delayed, but I remember discussing the sparkly trousers live.
I do hope there are a lot of silly songs this year!
i don't know, i just hope they're funny. i'm backing finland again. are finland even in it? who knows.
ahh, the sparkly trousers...
I may have to blog about the Eurovision when I return home from my dissertation viva later today
and the giant stapler. and the FAIRY TAAAAAAAAAAAAAALE
I remember the other two but not the stapler?
Oh yes and Mrs. Goat's friend IS GOING TO EUROVISION!
it was greece. The fact I know that off the top of my head scares me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnAJjXuY5YM
Oh yeah I remember!
I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, but it sounds funny anyway.
you have to witness it this week, it's amaaaaaazing.
Keep me updated. They are not showing it here in Singapore.
Or anywhere in SE Asia, for that matter. Looks like we'll have to rely on Google to be our friend again. ;)
they only show it delayed on tv here so they can show it in primetime, but the whole thing is streamed live on eurovision.tv
Is it on BBC?
Thanks. ;)
Happppy Birthday to Jaaaaames
Yup, 8pm GMT on saturday
Sweet, will catch the reply on the i then ;)
Seconded. :)
I think the Eurostar is being deliberately mean to me. Trains, regular all day, sometimes twice an hour, no more than an hour apart, but theres a gap between the one that leaves at 1.04pm and the one that leaves at 3.15pm. The first is too early for me to do a Roland Garros tour, the second is too late. If there was one that left around 2pm it'd be perfect. Stupid Eurostar.
Erm... lunch?
trains dont eat
Drivers do. ;)
uh i think you'll find they do
http://image.dhgate.com/upload/200911/92/ff808081193cc4c8011940a799ef0ecb/productimg1258168553440.jpg
Christine, prepared to be jealous of Jakey
http://twitter.com/jakehumphreyf1/statuses/14680588691
Perhaps a segment on the Turkish GP coverage?
They do consume lots of coal...
I refuse to believe that a company that runs 15 services a day schedules it so that all their drivers are on a 2 hour break at the same time
Rob!
It's french though, right?
Oh yeah! And don't forget about him. :D
all the proof you need that trains have mouths
:D
Careful now. When we start talking about Thomas, Mr C kills people off.
true, but I still am taking it personally :D I shall have to go to Roland Garros on the Monday when it is closed and look at the outside of it rather than the inside. Ah well, it just means I'll have to come back for the French Open one day :D
hehehehee
I'm still trying to overcome the shock that the fat controller is called something else
Back-to-back with the 2012 Olympics?
Or perhaps, you can convince someone to let you in on the Monday?
they're almost 3 months apart so not quite :D
Please note Airport #6 on this list: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8701609.stm
Yay. Roland Garros is starting! :D
Wooo: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/8702132.stm
I am not sure how much I will watch tonight, I think I'm dying.
But... But the superstars are all playing today! *pouts*
but they're all also pretty much guaranteed a win and I wouldn't be heartbroken if any of them got knocked out. Except pretty pretty Nando.
Please don't tell me you watched all 5 sets of Richie-Andy. That had heartbreak labelled all over it.
I really hope he can get to the quarter finals. Where he will be inevitably been beaten by Rafa. :(
gave up after 3. Then today at work they replayed Rogers match twice and then I saw 3 sets of Andy-Richie again.
Rafa will take a trip to the bakery for sure.
For some reason that took me a few minutes to realise you didn't mean Fernando Alonso
I did. But Gael's win managed to off-set my misery.
The differences between Nando and Anando, very subtle
(another livejournal interest of mine: "Spaniards named Fernando")
Good morning. Happy birthday James.
Same here I think
My favourite is neither: FERNANDO TORRES :P
If you're coming back for the Olympics there should be time to nip over to Paris..
Is it open Sunday?
Damn. Radio RG chose to talk on Justine's match rather than Nando's.
Looks like Dell are making a tablet: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/10146000.stm
Is it just my computer or are BBC now using the yucky narrow frame on all news items (not just the election website)?
yes
time to get a'streaming!
Nevermind. Nando breaks right off the bat. It may not be a long match at all. :D
Probably preparing to change the whole website like what has been done with the World Cup section http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/default.stm
all I know is that I used to spend a lot of time looking at the BBC website at work but now it looks hooooorrible on my nasty IE6 browser :(
It's like someone plonked a badly-sized, half transparent blue rectangle over the text...
i'm using IE6 now. i don't seem to have any issues like this.
if i can just touch on Water-Noghes for a sec. has this addendum by Benson been brought up?
you underestimate the crapness of my work PC.
indeed i do. :) perhaps it's not just a browser issue, then?
probably not, it's just all around bad.
You know how you have Schrödinger's Cat? Well my colleague has invented Schrödinger's Lotto Ticket - where he has chosen not to find out whether the ticket is a winner or a loser in order to prolong it's value!
eeeek I am a little nervous for my viva now :(
You'll be fine :)
Must say I am surprised 20% of our final dissertation mark comes from this though
woah! thats alot, that is surprising
Indeed, although they reckon 9/10 times it wont affect the mark anyways. bit of a rubbish marking system!
will let you guys know how it goes later anyways, byee!
Marilene, your link to your blog in this post is wrong. Before I thought it might just have been my phone :D
Where did it disappear to? *searches*
hi everyone
Hello Leigh.
you've linked to http://marileneriddle.wordpress.com/2010/05/25/a-beautiful-day-out/ but the post is at http://marileneriddle.wordpress.com/2010/05/25/a-day-out-at-marina-bay-part-i/
hi marilene,
how are you today?
Right. I must have changed the heading. Thanks. ;)
Great so far. Uploading more photos.
grand job
:)
:D Thanks.
Happy with Nando's win. Now onto Rafa!
:)
Well that was slightly stressful...
Taking on a few more responsibilities because I don't always have enough to fill the day.
hi pat
Hi
i couldn't find a bump day recording of the last 90 minutes in the end - had to settle for hightlights from indycars you tube site
looked truly epic...
Dex said it was on-demand but I don't know if that is US-only.
Is the Versus coverage not on RU?
It was highly dramatic!
no one seems to have it (yet), but i'm still looking around
Radio RG: Rafa looks like Josh Hartnett. Really?
Thought the race control version might be available somewhere on indycar.com but I don't know if the still keep them
Hopefully I'll have a blog post up tonight, need to get my game results out first
They just put up highlights gathered from various parts of the day. Generally, they just put up full versions of the races about a week after the event
I'm thinking of doing a post on Junqeira - incredibly impressive job. Kind of feel bad for Tracy, but he played his hand and lost.
Thankfully Duno isn't in it - to me that's an important landmark in the rebuilding of the series.
Yeah I feel bad for Tracy and I agree about Milka. Waste of space isn't she?
Dreadful - but I think it's important as for a long time she was a landmark of really poor drivers that was making the race; however with her out of the race, I definitely think it's a better sign for the overall quality of the field.
In fact I really think this is possibly the strongest Indycar field for a very long time.
For what years recently have we had an Indy field large enough to have non-qualifiers?
Bruno did a great job. 9 laps in the car and puts in a time that would've put him top 7 the day before...
Tracy had to go again because the others going after him were fast enough to beat him - he couldn't know they wouldn't. Unfortunately he also went slower. Shame.
I think recent years have had 35 or 36 but the back half dozen of that weren't really that quick, but that meant some of them got in the field.
I reckon the front of the race might be a lock in for Penske but there should be a lot of fun from 3rd down
I'm going to stick my neck out and go for a top three -
1) Castroneves
2) Tagliani
3) Dixon
1) Dixon
2) Dixon
3) Dixon
Yes, he's that awesome ;)
Interesting..
I was actually just thinking of going back on what I said. Penske had the quali pace but Dixon and Dario looked good in midweek practice so maybe they have race pace..
It slightly frustrates me that the following race is at Texas on a Saturday night, it makes it silly hours here
Lunchtime, i can finally check some news :)
In all honesty Penske have a very good shot at it this year though.
There's news? ;)
Not much..
Illegal immigrants got into Britain inside the FOM TV trucks!
Forgot the link
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/motorsport/7760715/Illegal-immigrants-sneak-into-Britain-in-Bernie-Ecclestones-F1-convoy.html
That felt like it went badly :( so many holes ripped into my work it felt.
He said I did fine so I'll use that as my hope...
Is this the last thing that needs to be completed before graduating?
Hello, BTW. Awful traffic tonight.
They're supposed to grill you. I submit data every quarter to an external database and the replies always feel that way.
It's nothing personal, it's done to help you ;)
Hello Journeyer.
pretty much, this and moderation
not to mention, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll fail. we got grilled crazy when we had to defend our thesis, but we still got a very good grade out of it. :)
i see. so yeah, even if you feel like you've been torn apart to shreds, it's not the end of the world by any means. :)
fair enough, was still very daunting. Tucked away in the corner of the uni in a cold empty area...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/10153286.stm
The Pac-Man game Google put on its home page gobbled up almost five million hours of work time, suggests a study.
Great way to celebrate 30 Years of Pac-Man. :D
Yeah, it's normal to feel that way.
It's the same when you are asked to write a report and you have to present your findings to your department... it's a good thing to get used to in other words...
...and that study itself also gobbled up a large number of work time
;)
I forgot to ping this earlier: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/05/25/a-stupid-name-for-a-great-phone/
Hopefully it won't be too bad though
he parks his trucks at biggin hill?
sounds like a cheap way to go on holiday - ryanair... pah!!
That's FOM HQ and I think where the planes are based too
I just got the most exciting email I've had in a while :D
"Subject:we are sending your tickets for the Formula One race in Monza on September 10/11/12-2010.
The following piece has been sent by RICCARDA from
SIAS SPA via DHL WorldWide Express on 25.05.2010 "
YAY!

So yeah... news
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/05/25/details-about-the-latest-us-f1-bid/
ding ding, round 2
woah, Andy Roddick is pretty close to being beaten in the first round. By a Finn!
I did like this Beeb note: Better news for the Americans - Robby Ginepri beats 18th seed Sam Querrey. Although both players are Americans so that would have been an even bigger upset if an American hadn't come through that one.
He amuses me. To no end. :D
:D
:D but Sammy noooooo. I love Sam.
I have a soft spot for him because he was part of the first pro tennis match I ever saw in person :D He really tested my love at Wimbledon though, seriously, he could not have made life as a Roger fan any more stressful
I can't say I am a fan of his on-court displays as much as I love his off-court antics. Especially during interviews. :D
Plus that gigantic serve is amazing to watch.
he is amazing in press conferences. I like his twitter too :D
joe doesn't link to it, but here's the web site:
http://www.cyphergrp.com/
they accepting paypal donations.
Like the table incident. Gold.
mind you they have a logo...
ee I just realised my tennis community has added "Djokovic retires from Djokovic Open" to its interests. It fits nicely beside "Djokovic wins Djokovic Open"
aheh! Does Paypal process 10 million dollars?
not to one individual, no :)
Looks a bit.... MS Paint. They've got it on t-shirts as well so that should satisfy one of Steven's points USF1 got wrong.
I have a feeling these people are going to take a lot of stick after the USF1 affair.
DHL Update: at 15:20 my shipment was in Milan, Italy :D :D
Awww: http://twitter.com/katiejobrien/status/14691610357
aww, I could have told her that was going to happen.
I finally decided on the new theme for Franck: http://iheartfranck.com/
OMG DINARA!
Safina out in R1. Poor Dinara, I once had such hope for her.
Injured great grandmother goes through. :S
My goodness, she's already slipped to 9th? A R1 exit won't help matters, considering she made it to the semis last year.
beaten by an old lady who can barely walk. That's terrible. I miss Marat.
Exactly. She really isn't like her brother.
wut?! safina has well and truly fallen from grace.
I didn't plan on watching tonights matches because I didn't want to stay up too late, but with Rafa about to start I can see myself in bed pretty early.
seriously, the lady is 39 and has so much strapping on her leg and is limping.
She has been condemned ever since she rose to No. 1 without a GS win. 'Fans' slammed her so much, she mentally broke down. :(
come on Jarkooooo
Castrol rankings?
ATP rankings. Castrol copied. :P
this match needs to end so I can have a shower and be back to watch the end of Rafa's.
Oooh. A hat flew onto Philippe Chatrier. :D
I don't know if it's just me but Google translate seems to get less and less useful.
ooh, fluro rafa
39! That's how old Kimiko Date-Krumm is. Well done to her. She made her Roland Garros debut in 1989, when Dinara Safina was three.
Even worse, she's been a finalist the last 2 years, as it turns out.
People are saying the next round should be a walkover for Jarmila Groth. Who also happens to be a Finn. ;)
doesn't she play for Australia now?
oh no, my red pen is very slightly leaking. slight mark on the desk now i've got dots on my arm.
Not according to Roland Garros.
Every day I come home with black ink all over me. If it's not the pens, it's the stoopid stamps.
she does according to slam tracker
Not postal stamps, obviously.
can't she be a finn playing for australia? ;)
she was born in Slovakia. I don't think she's ever been Finnish. So I don't like her :D
But shouldn't the people at RG know since they are actually physically there and can easily ask her?
But she ain't a Finn.
the RG website says Australian for me.
YAY ANDY!!! Okay. I'm off for supper.
oh yeah that too, so much that I stopped using one of them..
Roddick wins! Finn fail.
Thank you for the birthday wishes! :) it hasn't helped that I am ill but that TARDIS cake sounds good ;)
Aww, hope you feel better.
#notreallyhere
Christine... you'll like this about attention to detail in Back to the future:
http://i.imgur.com/IG8gR.jpg
Yes, yes, yes!
That's astonishing :)
I did actually spot that in the film, but any talk of BTTF is to be actively encouraged :)
Oh dear. I hate the library computer.... Hurry up Wednesday please!!
:)
I can happily confirm that the site looks truly awful from IE6.....
Ooh, looks like a new Lola sports car!
http://twitpic.com/1qxzk2
Looks like the old one too ;)
Do you think the secret's that it's not actually a new car and it is just the old one? :D
I thought Rafa would do this a little bit quicker. I might go to sleep soon. I just caught a glimpse in the mirror and realised how tired I look
Sleep! You get all the replays anyway, don't you?
I can't concentrate fully on them when I am at work though :(
That pesky work thing.
exactly. I could perhaps concentrate better if my desk was by one of the 32" tvs but instead it is by one of the 14" ones and you really have to squint to make out the score.
Afternoon all. I have decided now I am home to now let the viva bother me as I have done all I can do now to make sure it's ok :)
Awe Christine, You need to give Alguersuari his point back and add another 5 for having an amazing demo run this weekend in the DR. The picture was for promo purposes, you need to see the complete set. He also did a beach run yesterday before leaving for Turkey.
Oooh, noted, thanks Nelson.
Rafa is winning too slow. Now I sleep.
hello sidepodworld.
happy birthday James!
and happy bicentenary day! :-)
Whose Bicentennial is it?
Argentine
http://www.bicentenario.argentina.ar/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Revolution
Thanks!
Amyone know of a website I'm trying to think of... basically it allowed you to download a load of programs like Firefox, iTunes, etc in 1 handy package by ticking off the programs you wanted to download...
It definitely exists, I'm sure I'm not going mad
i know he one... i commented it or tweeted it... one sec.
was it this: http://ninite.com/
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/05/25/a-lap-of-turkey-with-mark-webber/
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!! it was!!
Thank you :D
There is a USF1 joke here but I'm tapped out.
I think NART might make a comeback into the racing scene.
*is now cursing the fact that he couldn't make the Montreal GP this year*
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/05/25/f1-fans-in-montreal-come-and-meet-joe/
Today is going steeply downhill :( stupid tuesday!
Daily is done. Thought I'd have a crack at it before dinner and tiredness set in. Can't find the time/motivation to write my post-GP blog posts yet!
cheers chap
I hear ya, it took me two months to get the gumption to blog again. Oh yeah... plug...
a live group too? cool.
Why do I have to be in Peru at that time...
There's no real explanation for it other than I'm busy, I feel like there's not that much to analyse and therefore I haven't got to it yet...
Evening all. I disappeared because I had a stressful end to the working day.. anyway, home now. :)
Happy bicentenary :)
Lots of stuff on twitter saying there will be an US Grand Prix in Texas in 2012?
Linky: http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2010/5/10824.html
So.... not Monticello then.
I've heard the name "Full Throttle Productions" before somewhere...
And how did they keep this under wraps?
Well, no Tilke so far...
Hey folks.
Sorry in advance for my poor knowledge of the US geography and population/economy distribution... but weren't we looking for a place more 'lights, money, fashion and VIP'?
that will be the second press release... ;-)
If it happens, I demand that Sidepodcast does a meet up for a beer crawl on 6th street. Just an awesome, awesome place.
The city of Austin is a great place. I've been there a bunch the last few years. Clean city, great night life, amazing music, and nice people.
Austin oddly fits that bill. It's one of the coolest cities in the US. South by Southwest is THE music festival in the SW US.
He was looking for glitz but from the release, it looks like he's found "more Fortune 500 company headquarters than any other state".
:D
Someone has to pay for it.
It makes total sense because Texas is one of the few places in the US that is booming and have cash on hand to do something like this.
hi everyone,
back - so... austin, texas, eh??
that's what you come to SPC, to get some extra education :-). I must confess this is probably the first time I hear the name Austin, Texas, related to something big... :-(
Sounds impressive so far, let's see what the track is like.
Isn't Austin, TX in Nascab territory?? wonder how the locals will like F1 ...
It is and a lot of UK bands go to it to try and get noticed.
It's race territory - it's regularly the second highest attended IRL race of the season as well
Sorry if I am drinking the FOM cool aid... but I am really excited by the prospect of a race in Austin.
I love the city of Austin. It is the most progressive and cosmopolitan city in Texas. It's a great mix of college students (the University of Texas has its' campus in Austin, 60,000 enrolled), government workers (state capital), artist, musicians, and just general happiness.
I don't like the rest of Texas (read Dallas and Houston) but Austin is a great fit for F1.
I would feel proud to have Austin represent the U.S. to the world.
Kind of, NASCAR's homeland is a little farther to the east. You don't get into REAL NASCAR territory until you get to east Texas.
That's more the Carolinas and Georgia I think
Awesome, that's good enough for me.
+1
I think Austin is also around 100 miles north as well...
Any city that can produce the greatest blues guitarist I ever heard is OK with me.
http://www.vimeo.com/11994409 - Some footage of the Red Bull event in Santo Domingo this past weekend.
Go Jaime :)
you can have the whole sea and but still crash a several millions america's cup class boat...
http://www.louisvuittontrophy.com/gallery/show.php?id=2462
ooh, that is very well produced. me likey.
Anyone in England, come to Austin with me for the first race. (if it happens)
I guarantee you the time of your life. You'll have more good BBQ, beer, music, and experiences then you could possibly imagine.
Trust me.
Absolute ROFLAGE.
awesome!
Don't make me commit to it, please!
Want to. Would need to save like crazy.
tell you what. if sidepodcast is still going then. you have yourself a deal.
(although i may couple it with the canadian gp though, if that's ok?)
Last time Texas hosted a race, it was Dallas. Remember what happened in that race? 100+ degree temps, tarmac breaking up worse than the pikeys in Canada, and Mansell collapsing his car over the line due to exhaustion.
What nice is that Austin is farther away from the gulf so it doesn't get the muggy heat you get in Austin and Dallas. Good for the drivers and fans. Another thing that is nice about Austin is that it is reasonably dry and warm year round. This means that can make it a spring or fall race with no problem.
AUSTIN!?!?!?!?!?!
Austin is _IN_ Texas, but not _OF_ Texas.
What I would probably recommend is fly into Houston or Dallas and drive in. Austin is about 2-3 hours drive from both of those cities. My brother lives in Houston, so if anyone wants to fly into Houston, then can ride with me. (Not that I am getting prematurely excited about this or anything.)
I know. I am having a real hard time concentrating on work right now.
#Correction
BUT I DON'T LIVE IN AUSTIN!!!
It's all about ME ME ME!
You are closer than me. So at least you got that going for you... which is nice.
Tell you what, I will talk to Bernie and make sure you get the rights to the U.S. Grand Prix from 2021 on so you can host it on your back porch.
Sound OK?
It'd be a flyer, that's for sure, although I'm hoping by that time I'll be a bit closer to Texas.
Have a few friends in the area, too.
Although "Purpose built" worries me. It'll probably be another crap circuit like all of the other new ones.
(if it even happens)
So long as Tilke doesn't even get an invite I'd be happy. Shame John Hugenholtz died 15 years ago, he did Zandvoort and Suzuka donchaknow. ;)
Since Jack Bauer is out of a job, I think we have a new job for him. The script writes itself.
Bauer: "Where are you hiding Tilke! The man is a international menace. Where is he? WHERE IS TILKE!!! DAMMIT!!!"
and it will take him 24hs to find him? I want it faster! ;-)
It depends where they site the track. If it is in the hills to the north and east, it could be another Turkey... with actual fans there.
If they site it to the south of the city towards San Antonio, then we will get another pool table boring Tilke-groan.
I say that because it is lovely area of rolling hills. Perfect for a nice race track.
Evening all,
A bit diffferent but I think you'll like it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hR3xO-auhR8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHC4h_q3X7c
what are the chances of tilke's company getting fired and the folks that designed portimao being brought in....?
anyone...?
That was fun!
x 24 hours = emmense
i totally missed this earlier, wow!
When asked if [Montezemolo] supported the idea [two day weekends], he said: "Certainly. As long as we go back to testing between races. We need tests to try out the car"
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83865
that would make me very happy!
Nice to see chauvanism isn't dead, in the first clip...
"we have a female in the race, very pretty.."
What?
i wonder how in reality the weekend would work but that is rather cool, would put alot more emphasis on simulation rather than at circuit set up
Real old style commentary - sounds like a nutjob
:D
As long as weekend ticket prices drop accordingly... and therefore the hosting fees
just one practice session i guess. maybe longer?
would have to be quite considerably longer, i doubt teams would accept less than 2 hours testing of a weekend, which would probably push quali back a bit as well, and as pat says it would mean considerably less money for all involved.
true, but i'd take a longer season if the weekends were shorter.
bernie wants 20 races? that's fine if he cuts fridays. that way his income stays around the same mark... i'm guessing.
i wonder hat support races would end up getting cut out of the mix
could be a risk, true.
That could probably work, yeah. WOuld be interesting to see
although, they could have the track the whole of friday.
Hm yeah.. Hopefully none as they can still run their practices and qualifying on Friday. It would reduce their Saturday running time though, if all the F1 practice is extended.
I think bringing back Sunday warm-up would make sense on a 2-day weekend as well.
Right. Must focus. Shower, dinner, blogging. Back later.
By the way there is a Eurovision semi-final on now for those interested.
I'm passing on it, waiting for Saturday..
Same here, love seeing the acts for the first time on the night :)
I'm promising myself not to tweet that much so I don't spoil it. But I swear one of these hosts tonight is what Heikki Kovalainen will look like in 10 years time.
hopefully talking to joe in a bit. questions as ever: http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Questions+for+Joe
I have decided this is what the USGP will look like - http://www.flickr.com/photos/lukehmuse/4639314657/
i wonder if it is too much to expect... y'know... a race track
Added a Q about reduced weekends
the skype test call lady has dumped me.
she's nowhere to be found.
thanking ya
:D
aww
goodbye, dear skype test call lady
we hardly knew ye
but we got on so well. she was always so cheerful. i had no idea anything was wrong.
i know we haven't spoken in a while...
Maybe she found out the shocking truth about ringo
Added about 2nd USGP. I know we should be grateful for one, but y'know.. :)
:)
She's online for me now. Do you want that I say her something? ;-)
"hello"
Reminds me of the planet Neutral on Futurama
"Any last words?
Tell my wife I said.... hello."
also... she's a two timing little tart.
:D
it's been ages! maybe she moved house? ;).. or died or something?.. ;)
I'm sure Christine will be thrilled with this news ...
i may have forgotten to mention we were downshifting.
:)
I reckon she got promoted. She deserves it after all her hard work testing things.
She didn't comment to ask or anything though, she could've at least sent a racemail.
well you can't expect her to hang around forever if you don't care about her enough to tell her these kinda things.
although I fear every racemail she sent would have been the same.
she didn't sound very pleased... I may now be in trouble!
:D
That actually looks like a good circuit. What's that, 8, 9 miles long, all the worst bits of Turkey, Singapore and Valencia combined?
*must*resist*urge*to*bash*Skype*
It's actually a brand new idea from Shermann Filker, a texan oil giant in cohorts with Bernie Ecclestone to create the circuit design.
don't resist - just do it, you'll feel much better
One of my colleagues at work had a call from a lady at Skype (not related to the call test lady I hope), and he had to hang up the call as the quality was so bad. All he said was "sorry, but your call quality is really poor". Her response: "sorry about that, I'll try again later." She never did. I think it's cos our system was too awesome for her.
Sorry Mr C, shes on my computer too. She was hiding but I found her
*waves fist*
I have the ultimate challenge this weekend.
F1, Indy 500, me camping next to a pub. I know which I'd rather have.
Barman, another please!
not forgetting GP2 and isn't there a Rally in Portugal too?
Think so, according to Marilene's excellent daily post.
Nah, the real challenge will be downloading the damn thing via iPlayer when I get home Monday evening. No spoilers please!
This has to be THE greatest F1 related story I think I have ever heard;
It has been confirmed that five illegal immigrants were discovered in the media trucks of sporting governing body Formula One Management (FOM, the company owned by Bernie Ecclestone) after travelling back from Monte-Carlo last week.
http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/formula-1-news/235503/illegal-immigrants-found-in-fom-trucks/
I vaguely remember about 10 years ago that there were rumours that some f1 teams were suspected of transporting drugs. On the way to a race, the Jordan trailers (of all the teams...) were stopped and searched, but nothing was found and the rumours have since gone away
Bit hard considering the 2010 rules are so aero-dependent ;)
So... Mercedes 1-2 with Rosberg spanking Schumi?
There's a list of events on my side bar, updated 20 mins ago :)
http://toomuchracing.com/
game results next, then maybe Indy stuff
I appear to have given WSbR an extra bit of power. FR3.6?
{slow clap}
hehehe
took you a while to get that one :P
That's cheating!
i'll have you know, i'm too busy to "get" jokes - when i want a joke, i want signed, sealed and delivered to me on a plate
Lance Armstrong just linked to the Autosport story on Texas...
http://twitter.com/lancearmstrong/statuses/14709618145
+1
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too slow today to get anything other than the most obvious of Alex Andronov-induced coma-friendly jokes.
Am doing a bit of work on aero, put simply, why does downforce increase corner speed and grip?
It's an increase in grip but where does the grip come from, is it purely an increase in contact patch? Any help is appreciated :D
Scientific answer coming shortly.
The increase in grip due to more downforce is the force of the air pushing the car towards the ground. It's more effective at higher speeds due to the way the downforce curve is logarithmic. Put simply - more air going over car per second = faster car can go per second.
And elaborating on that, the more air going down means the car sticks to the ground at higher speeds, whereas with a little less downforce it can't go as quick.
Seeing as TM has that covered, here is an excellent article from the guy who runs iRacing on how tyres are modelled...
WHoops!
http://www.iracing.com/news/blog/the-sticking-points-in-modeling-tires/
I knows this, but why does it go faster round corners. The car gets pushed into the group which increases grip, but my question is what is the increase in grip, is it purely a contact patch thing?
Got to love Montoya sometimes
It's not purely a contact patch thing, it's more the car being able to sustain a higher speed through a corner thanks to the increased air being pushed under / around / over it. The more air you can expel at a higher speed the faster your car can go.
Probably should explain that a little better.
The contact patch stays the same, as the increase in speed will only do what the tyre's designed to do at that speed. When you have more air going over the car and a 180mph aggressive corner (think Eau Rouge) the car, and particularly the tyre, suffer a severe elevation change which compresses the suspension and tyres and more often than not grounds the car out.
I don't think his bike will meet the holmolgation requirements. Plus he might fail a few other tests.
BTW: New poll (look on the left side) on my site.
the friction force between the tire and the tarmac proportional to the vertically applied force on the contact area. So higher downforce would mean higher friction and better grip
I understand the theory, but in reality when you go round a corner faster it increases the grip overall in the car, and i just wanted to know what happens to the tyres to increase this, because purely pushing a car down harder wouldnt increase grip of its own accord, i.e heavy car vs light car
is the explanation i was looking for :) ta
PING --> Going Back to America: http://wp.me/pSi0N-aM
:)
Must leave the actual scientists and stop playing physics. :D
No, because you need more air going over the car to increase the grip, hence why heavy cars are slower than lighter cars.
What you said made sense, i just wasnt phrasing the question properly!
ah but this is my point. i know when a car goes faster it has more grip, i just want to know why
And I wasn't phrasing the answers properly. Bloody Aspergers.....
guille said the key word: friction. Friction is grip. No grip is slip. When you slip you slide. Slide = no grip.
42.
There, sorted!
I can be easily overruled by an actual engineer, I'm just a physicist playing engineering here :P
For our next lesson in F1 Physics... co-efficient of friction between to surfaces.
That's the best game, no? :D
Or: "How Kobayashi crashes so frequently."
That's an awesome idea for a book that needs to be written.
I for one will put my foot down and say that I shant be reading that, it would be like an extra long very of Racecar Engineering. Although put alot of picture so nice cars and such and ill 'read' it :D
I'd be keen to assist.
Sorta like Scarbs' blog, but physics-minded?
:D
Happy Towel Day everybody!
the thing is that the amount of downforce you can generate is way bigger than the mere 150kg fuel weight. so the idea is the same (a heavier car would have more grip), but the numbers are just too small compared to the other variables involved (a heavier car would generally mean a less balanced car, with a higher center of gravity)
And another Douglas Adams quote which is a particular fave of mine:
"I like deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they fly by."
Yeah cause you're talking 150kg of weight vs. 1500+kg of aero load...
hehe, I tweeted that earlier, tis an amazing quote.
yeah thats true, makes alot of sense. i guess downforce is a preditable 'weight' where as fuel is not
Not strictly true. Fuel's more calculable than downforce, but downforce is more susceptible at higher speeds to interference.
+1
I had a couple of ideas for posts in the 'physics of racing' subject last year, but time fly pretty fast...
I meant in terms of force and application.
If I am going to go round X corner of X radius, its very easy to work out how much downforce is applied to teh car and where, if I have alot of fuel in the car its harder to predict what happens when im going around the same corner and braking.
My point being downforce is a nice force, where as mass of fuel is a not nice force
Yes but the effect on the tyres is not 'nice' and is very difficult to model:
http://www.iracing.com/news/blog/the-sticking-points-in-modeling-tires/
Ah, makes more sense now.
I would say both are difficult to predict exactly. Is more a thing of:
- you have much more downforce than fuel weight, so your grip will be basically dictated by the first in a first approximation (*)
- fuel is a liquid and is relatively high in the car, which makes it a little bit more unbalanced under accelerations (of all kinds)
(*) nevertheless, the weight of the fuel and extra grip is enough to ruin the rear tires if it's not taken properly into account by the drivers at the start of the race
Guys, I'm listening to random Jonsí...
#awesome
omg!!!!!
*excited*
I'd never listened to him before tonight either!
tomorrow!!!! :)
he.is.so.amazing..
i can't decide.. should i bring my dslr tomorrow.. or just my super digi with the big zoom..
This is how not to design a blog: http://duey23.blogspot.com/
Your eyes will BURN :(
No kidding. If I've learned anything in design... tie-dye is never a good choice.
New eyeballs please.
I'm blind! ;-)
We need an f1 team with that livery
can someone poke me next time i'm down about the state of f1 and point in the direction of joe please?
(hearts) joe
(hearts) f1
*is looking forward to turkey*
Well, it wouldn't be as dull as Brawn's.
Actually, that reminds me of the old Porsche 917 "hippie" liveries. I think F1 needs the "Pink Pig" livery as well.
Woah
i know!
:(
!!!!!!!!!!!
(hearts) Joe too :)
Whoa!
*EHEM!*
has someone else signed in as the username 'me'?
I feel.
umm.
scared
I don't know what staggers me more - the fact that Joe has done this, or the fact anyone is looking forward to turkey!
hehe
i'm not looking forward to turkey.. so i can't wait for the podcast now :)
Turkey is usually quite a good race innit?
you'll have to listen to the show tomorrow. it's kinda like a ted blog, f1 makes so much more sense when joe explains it.
Joe is F1's best salesman. Bernie to hire him for PR.
Nope.
Man's a genius. :)
Looking forward to hearing what he said to change your tune.
My colleague is going apparently!
I think the first race at Turkey was actually really good
The rest... not so much. Like, I'm not sure if they even took place.
#correction. Sorry, busy day.
Last year's definitely happened.. if that helps you ;)
Definitely cant wait!
I have high hopes for this one. I haven't been listening to many podcasts since I moved to CPH but I think I will make an exception here...
i think was just the positive vibe. and damn i wish it went to the monaco meetup...
me too.. :( did you ask him if he could do one in monaco next year?;)
I don't car what anyone says - no car livery could ever be worse than:
http://www.racingmodels.co.uk/ekmps/shops/arendonk1/images/-center-brabham-judd-bt60-damon-hill-1992-1-43-2558-p.jpg
or even;
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1358/822014005_75f629cf33.jpg
Jenson winning was awesome, but Rubens fell apart :(
Those were literally the only two events though I remember from the race. Vettel being silly on lap 1 and Rubens being, well, Rubens
its fair to say that i let out a small yelp when i saw those. eeeeesh
That was my first blog post I think...
Lively day for the forum. I can't remember a day in a while I was this happy about F1.
oooh, we need a first post roundup.
*goes to find mine*
I reckon Joe's been part of the Austin deal
you picked a good day to start blogging again :)
gooo f1!
i want to stand up for honda.. but i really really can't. There is no justifying the 'zip' livery..
Nah, false alarm... it was this one: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2009/05/17/so-whats-this-blog-about-then/
So I have been blogging for a year now ;)
Right you lot, I wish I could chat some more but sleep beckons. No use denying it, I'm crazy.
Night all!
Not Honda.... BAT
i want to highlight this comment as one of my favourites for a long time. :) i'd favourite it if i could :P
Happy blogaversay :)
night TM
Night mate.
I've been listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan ever since they did the Austin announcement. The man was a god.
I'm just going to call them brackley f1.. it's much much easier.
There should be passing in Turkey though. Long straight, twisty bit wide enough to squeeze through. They did it before.
night
wooo brackley f1
*ahem*
Night TM
Last year happened: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2009/06/01/the-brawn-conspiracy/
Took me ages to write that one!
I can't wait to hear the Turn 8 superlatives this year. I want someone to get an 'fantabulous' in there somewhere
Cheers!
so.so.so. jealous.
If you do mean any of the people i talk about and don't get at least a photo with them i'll be sad.
#blameCraigPollock
You have to tweet loads about your connection to the factory like someone else on twitter does ;)
If they were bottoming out last year with 80kg of fuel, things could be hairy with 140kg+
my first blog post: http://sidepodcast.com/2007/02/03/new-and-notable/
anyone written a shorter debut entry?
Are you calling me Claire Williams? ;)
:)
:)
:)
Woof! What's that over there? Is it a car? Coming around the corner? Over the hill? What's happening Martin?
nope
then i am heartely confused
Nah, Claire's tweets are cool!
Here is my first post:

Poor Nick Fry
tis the best way of navigating life, i find.
hehehe you got y'all into you're first blog post! :)
42. Towel Day!
blimey!!
(*working on a story, Saw the name Claire Williams.... now Sidepodcast has my full attention.*)
;)
Muse is mentioned :P
nothing changes :)
I'm stealing Helio Castroneves' catchphrase - "funtastic"
:D
I think I may have been angry with him abouty something that day
we should count words...
http://guille2306-viajes-barcitalia092006.blogspot.com/2006/10/bienvenidos.html
(61 words, BTW)
can we make a list and challenge croftie?
Which time? I think it was something to do with Rubens IIRC?
Probably. FRY!!! *shakes fist*
"OH YES!" He says, like the Churchill dog!
That makes me sound like Prof. Farnsworth...
60 for me. i may have to translate yours though.
it was only 4 or 5 days before brawn gp was announced.. maybe he read that and realised they needed to announce their awesome team soon? ;)
to the wiki?
Well Gareth Jones just linked to Matt Lucas doing a parody of him where he had the phrase "TOTAL FERNANDO" on his shirt... also he thought of "Partial Massa"...
did he turn down slim or someone?
Heheheheh!
More Indy news. Michael Andretti is going to drive the 2-seater IndyCar on the pace lap before the 500. In front of the field. With Mark Wahlberg in the passenger seat.
And it was supposed to be Mario driving but @CurtCavin just tweeted the change. Here's the original story.
http://www.indystar.com/article/20100523/SPORTS0107/5230336/1217/SPORTS0107
That's just amazing.
The Izod-sponsored two-seater would be positioned in front of the official pace car until the last lap before the green flag. Then, Andretti, 70, would hurry around Indianapolis Motor Speedway to catch the back of the pack before pitting.

Cue Tim Gray and the news in Spanish? :D
Oooooooh, one of the greatest PC games of all time Half Life 2 is coming to Mac for the first time tomorrow.
drop the last 'e'
there was a rumour about Slim buying the team.. but that was denied, i think it went kinda quiet for a few weeks before they announced the team early March.. I think it was announced the 5th and hit the track on the 6th?..
My first..

So are old news, but fresh ..."
55, damn you!
I love that f1 photographers seem to be so nice :) really can't wait till spa. i'm gonna need a list of all the photogs i like the work of and i can then set myself the challenge of trying to chat to as many as possible :)
kind of... :P
