Today is a daily with a difference, as regular writer James is unwell and Christine managed to forget to cover. Predictably this won't be the most punctual of posts, although I do have a genuinely good excuse for once. I've just finished editing the latest Aside with Joe podcast (intro overdubs at 4am are always fun), and it's sounding brilliant. Expect it to be available for download around midday today.
F1 free practice gets underway in Turkey tomorrow, but in the meantime here are some stories to pass the time.
- The big news of the morning, says that Herman Tilke will be designing the Austin F1 track in the USA. God help us all. Admittedly this was always the likely option, but Adam Cooper did some digging and unearthed the facts. His whole post is insightful and worth reading.
- Sebastian, put together a fine post in response to the Austin news, tackling the subject of Tilke's dreadful reputation amongst F1 fans head on. Go read now (and don't forget to comment).
- Away from Austin, Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen have been confirmed as attendees at the Classic Team Lotus Festival in Snetterton, June 20. The T127 will also make an appearance, before bizarrely, the F1 transporter does a lap. Sold!
That pretty much covers everything worth knowing so far today. I'm patiently awaiting the arrival of a non-specific tablet device, which likely to change my life forever (or which might at least offer a new means of following Formula 1).
In all probability, the thing won't arrive on time or in one piece, much like Amy's Monza tickets, which are right now closer to me than they are to either Italy or Australia. Happy Thursday.
i wrote that in less than an hour, go me.
found a comment on the Austin thing from someone from Austin, not sure if that letter was really sent or not, but that is view of somebody not happy about having F1 in the backyard - link (plug alert I shoud add :-) )
My Monza ticket status - unable to decide on seats location, pondering the chicane
That doesn't surprise me a bit. Austin is the epicenter for hippies in the south. You would get the same response anywhere on the west coast if they were build a track there.
Funny, I am just finishing a post of 10 reasons why you should attend a f1 race in Austin.
I already received an email from an event company from Austin offering their services in case I plan to do something in Austin during F1 :-) "Need a SAT truck? Need Dancers? Need a Stage or a Venue? Throwing a party?
Need an associate producer? Need a correspondent? Need a Venue or a PA? Truss and Lights? Stagehands?" - so, some people also see a benefit :-)
Monza ticket update: no updates since they left Heathrow 12 hours ago. I hope this means they are on a long flight
See reason #9.
:-)
my first trip to the US years back took me to Dallas of all the places. I must say that that area did not look to me anywhere near like F1 friendly country :-) from your description Austin looks like entirely different world
I love it when I push publish on a story and immediately see TONS of errors.
You had me sold at bbq. I would love to do Austin because i'd love to do Montreal and two races makes a trip to the other side of the world more economical than one! Sadly my 2012 sports travel plans are already set for London and I don't think I can afford 2 trips in one year :(
Dallas stinks. It's the gateway to East Texas which is a place you never, ever want to be.
why am i not getting any more sidepodcasts other than the "a ride along with" in my itunes feed???
Wolf i think you should do the chicane. It can be the sidepodsection :D
oh, the Olympic thing ... booo.... :-)
is that the stand marked with number 8 on all the track maps ?
Probably my only chance to see Roger win Olympic gold so I have to be there. Wolf, can't remember off the top of my head but according to my confirmation email my ticket is for tribuna esterna prima variante A
Mike,
Sidepodcast is taking some time off. They got a little burned out and are recharging a bit. They will be back soon.
Dan thanks for the update. for the record.
come back soon.
I don't know if I should feel good about writing this blog post title for something I am working on.
"What to decipher from Cypher Grand Prix"
I feel like I should have a drum set to do this.
Morning.
Here's a link to a decent BBC article about how BP are trying to stop the oil spill by 'killing the well': http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/us_and_canada/10167666.stm
We did *not* get burnt out.
I didn't forget, it was just temporarily in a part of my brain I wasn't using.
Morning Christine
Because you were asleep?
That can happen... I do that to I remember that I've forgotten if that makes sense.
Some of the time, yup. Although not since mid-day yesterday when James asked.
I do that toooooooo not to... madness...
That makes no sense. Giggles, what is wrong with the English language today?
Ahh, I miss Tweets of the Week.
Why did F1 need more teams? Because the paddock in Istanbul is HUGE. Even now, there’s still enough room for a game of transporter polo.
http://twitter.com/redbullf1spy/status/14820290616
Transportor polo? What on earth do they use as the ball?!
Daydreaming? :)
Hehe. I know this might come as a surprise, but sometimes I am actually busy doing other things.
Hello. I am almost certainly not here.
Tell me about it. I have been a little busy lately too ;)
Ooh. In that case, we definitely can't see you :)
He's busy doing other things too? :D
Just your imagination, I'm not here til lunchtime. :)
Yes. Though I've got a break in the morning routine as the postman hasn't turned up yet (I'm covering for the post-opener and sort of cleared some of my stuff yesterday). So I'm writing a task list I can add things to, in case I forget some of the new stuff I'm supposed to be doing every month.
Stupid Dust. I did a big clean of my flat the other day and it's still up my nose. Sneezing and coughing like mad still!
Morning all
Morning Mr Lukeh. How are you?
Good thank you, still buzzing from the gig :) the run home for the train was funny. Was a super evening though,
How are you Christine? I see you are waiting the arrival of a certain tablet device :)
Nothing to do with me :)
Oops, I should have really read the author bit... #jumptoconclusions
As if I'd be allowed anywhere near it.
Help!
I've learned a new skill - just handwashed my very first item of laundry (my Force India/Fisichella T-shirt turned out to have rather complicated washing instructions and it seemed unwise to put it in the washing machine pile in case Mum missed something crucial). However I now need to work out how to dry it. The same washing instructions say "do not tumble dry", so I turned to the Guide to Hanging Laundry. It says "Hang clothes on megablastic dryers", which is a good alternative... ...except for people like me with no dryers (megablastic or otherwise) to hang clothes on.
Could you clever Sidepodders please suggest an alternative drying method that I can do in my room? Normally clothes at my house dry outside, but "outside" in this case features the risk of rain and loose animals, so I'd rather dry it indoors where I know the T-shirt will be wearable tomorrow.
P.S. I promise to post a picture of my success to my Flick account, since the Sidepodcast drop.io account has an uncertain future.
Awesome. Glad you enjoyed it - are you going to blog about it?
Curtain pole.
Definitely! Will probably do it this evening... or I could do it now. Silly work getting in the way this afternoon.
Hi
Or put it on a coat hanger and hang it from a door handle.
You can hang it on a hanger and stick it in hte airing cupboard if you have one, or just in a doorway. It wont necessarily be dry by tomorrow though
Well we have this problem a lot in Danish apartments - conventional wisdom seems to be to hang on a shower curtain pole (or if your shower is in some sort of cubicle, a pole going across the top of it).
Failing that, an indoor clothes horse or the back of a plastic chair.
Or, if you can access your boiler, hang it up in there?
That's a good one too...
I think @JRobertsF1 is a bit annoyed that FP's wont be on Sports Extra. He won't stop talking about it!!
Curtain pole. {Comment #47}
Thank you :)

Even better - this one is the one I think I'll do. Sidepodcast is a great and helpful community :)
Oh yeah, I should probably say. The support act last night had a guy quite literally dancing (really going for it, I should add) around a Macbook in a druid's gown wearing a cap underneath the hoody part.
I may have decided that this is how Mr C comments

ummm.... is he the one with the ring? i only know that from the now show sadly.
i walked out of the cinema during the first movie. never going back/
i'm all heart me.
hehehe
I like the movies, but they're so hard to watch. The last one, I reckon if they didn't take all that money from the NZ Tourist Board they could have chopped off at least an hour of long shots!
Or draped over a radiator (or on a frame hanging off the radiator). Usually better in winter when radiator is in use, but serves as an airing spot. Make sure window is open a touch or the room may get damp.

Only if they wanted lots of complaints from the Tolkein anoraks (it is adapting a rather long trilogy.) It's a good length if you've read and like the books. As a film series in itself... ...it's a bit on the lengthy side!
Its iPad day tomorrow. If there any in the shop, I see that as a sign I hve to buy one
fact :)
Right, I am going to go into a cave for a good few hours. Todays task is to take a lap simulation programme with a Porsche 911 Cup car and lap Donington park in a considerably faster time than the first lap I do.
Then write about it in a big report, boo.
Ahhh uni is fun sometimes..

where is mine?

I liked them. Bit slow and bit over-done maybe.
As a story I think the trilogy would work better as 3 TV series but it would need a mega big budget.
Chasing Amy's tickets?
ROB MENTION ON RADIO RG! Sort of.
He is mentioned as a 'coach' to Felipe. I do think they have no idea he is really a race engineer. Plus one of them asked how does he keep up with Felipe when he is so fast and another replied 'they have earpieces you know'. :D

Good luck, have fun...

Apparently it was only a typo that caused the original letter to have the head office's address (they have other company offices, one of which is where the job actually is). In that case, the panel would probably have received a shock when they phoned me to ask where I was and I replied "Over 100 miles away where I was told to go. Why haven't you got here yet?"

Indy note - Tony Kanaan will now start from last position after a chassis change. He's back with the primary car, after qualifying the spare car on Sunday. You're only allowed to keep your starting position if you crash after qualifying. Since it only moves him back a place and the first car is faster it makes sense.

here's a question. in tennis, there's mens, womens and mixed. in athletics and football, there's probably something similar. how come motorsport it's just people?
So the guy who got bumped 3 times in qualifying now starts 32nd?!
Oh dear.
The big question of the weekend has been answered: Vettel has named his new chassis 'Randy Mandy'
http://twitter.com/NobleF1/status/14833960241
Don't know - just always been like that even since the very earliest days of motor racing.
Yep
Oh Seb......
Has anyone noticed that he also names them alphbetically? Kate, Liz, Mandy....
oh dear indeed!

I suppose there are not enough ladies to make their own series?
Yes
there was a formula women about 6/7 years ago and it died a death very quickly
Better than Mariah I guess.
Do you think he got through A-J during his junior formulae years?
here's a question. in tennis, there's mens, womens and mixed. in athletics and football, there's probably something similar. how come motorsport it's just people? {Comment #204}
Possibly because the first practitioners of it were the sort of people who would otherwise be sailing or horse riding - both sports that compete as "just people". Most other sports weren't - either because they were invented by the working classes instead of the upper classes (and therefore it tended to be the men who had time to play the sports initially) or they were invented so long ago that they predated the concept of gender equality. If my theory is correct, then sports invented in the future will tend to be "just people" unless those inventing it can demonstrate a very obvious reason why they shouldn't be.
Because... nobody watched? Or it had no promotion? They weren't very good? Or it was just rubbish?
I imagine he went twice around the alphabet with some of his driving. ;)
Yes, please Christine, give "One-Finger" Seb a big minus score next week.
Having said that, can't wait to see the prudish BBC say "Randy Mandy"! :D
I would guess so... Perhaps that is a question for my 'audience' with Joe... Either that or he has a penchant for world airlines...
I used to play Indoor Netball in a mixed team. The Women gave out the biggest hits. I don't think it makes that much of a difference these days...
Partially A+B, but also because I think the quality of the field was really lacking. Any women in motorsports that I know of tend to move up the "known ranks"
I suppose there are not enough ladies to make their own series {Comment #212}
There are in karting, but it still doesn't happen.
so why not mixed tennis?
I've always thought the problem occurs after karting, when girls attempt to make the transition to cars - there simply does not seem to be the support to get girls from karting into racecar machinery
....but of course I could be wrong
there was a formula women about 6/7 years ago and it died a death very quickly {Comment #214}
Shunting the series into the depths of digital TV probably didn't help. Still, I think the future of female motorsport competition is alongside rather than separate from male competitors - there's no physical or mental reason why they would not be equally capable in a sport of this type.
Beats me. There are physiological differences between Men and Women, but in most cases they're not that big.
I suppose in top level sport where your body is the primary tool for being successful that the extra 1/10th of a percent matters. But I always thought that if you were fit enough, it didn't matter in Motorsports?
They play mixed doubles.
Afternoon everyone :)
They did it wrong. The people running it I mean.
Should have been in Formula Fords.
my dads favourite story is about how when he was in his 20s he played hockey for North Otago and as a charity thing the mens hockey team played the North Otago womans netball team at netball and beat them 40-3.
I've always thought the problem occurs after karting, when girls attempt to make the transition to cars - there simply does not seem to be the support to get girls from karting into racecar machinery {Comment #226}
The problem is between ages 14 and 16, showing that there's not only not enough support to get girls from karting to racecar machinery (and you're completely right about that), but something is stopping women from staying in karting long enough to get the achievement records needed to get into good car racing teams or make best use of them.
they do. but they don't play against each other. eg. male vs. female.
Ironically enough, I've always though size mattered a little less in motorsports, because the male competitors are themselves quite small for the most part.
ipad?
So my iPad got delivered this morning instead of tomorrow morning but because I wasn't in - because I didn't know - it's gone back to the depot :( And now I have to wait until tomorrow as I did before, but now I know it was really close to my house but isn't here :(

Almost makes me pity Justin Wilson sometimes - all 6'3" of him
Awesome!
the minimum standard speed to be included in the 'fastest serves' list for men is 140 mph. The fastest womans serve ever was 130.
so why not mixed tennis? {Comment #225}
Because the original version was played by rich noblemen back in the 1500s (Henry VIII used to play it quite a lot when he was young). As a result it predated the concept of gender equality - the upper classes were in a position to use it before the working classes but even they didn't do gender equality back then. The version we know today was a version created to utilise the lovely big lawns that became popular in pre-Victorian England. Many of the rules are very different, but some things simply got copied over. That said, modern tennis has got a mixed doubles version, which is something royal/real tennis never had.
except i wanted to discuss with you. doh!
It's really annoying I could so easily have been here today if I had known... Why did they move the date but not tell me?
we can talk about the best way to make hot chocolate if you want........

The main area in which men and women have different physical capacities is explosive power. Otherwise it's possible to train a man and a woman to the same level of fitness. Most sports require a certain amount of explosive power, but motorsports only really requries that if you get it wrong and have to suddenly correct a slide or something. Otherwise stamina, consistency of movement, heat resistance and multi-tasking are more important - all things which men and women are equally capable of doing.
it could be worse, it could be in Brazil :D

Subversion: My first and only individual medley race in 2002 - a regional swimming gala - had me in a race with 5 men, some of which had competed in that stroke before. There were four other men (and two women) in the other heat. I had the slowest entry time of the six in my heat but ended up with a bronze medal :)
Broader non-subversion: Every other medal in the competition was won by men. Swimming is a discipline where explosive power is important...

There are less girls in karting, so there will be even less girls in junior single seaters, so there will be less girls in international single seaters. its like a big triangley thing.
Some Girls are as good but i dont think its a thing about specifically supporting women, i just think that the girls that do come up into cars arent as good. thats not a sweeping statement saying that all girls arent and will never be, but in the past and at the moment, they arent as good
:)
You've sent the rain over to Denmark (SHAKES FIST)!!!
I think you'll find it's called a pyramid ;)
this will make you happy, guess who i got ^^ from
VBH :P
triangley thing
ah yes, thats the one. who'd have thunk id want to be a primary school teacher :D
In fairness, one could call a pyramid a 'loads of triangley thing' ;)
I would have said a 'maslow-y-triangley-thing' but then that would have confused people even more ;)

The reason why I say it's between 14 and 16 is because there was research done on the matter indicating that 40% of 14-year-olds with a British karting licence are female but only 2% of 16-year-olds with a British karting licence are female. If the 60/40 split was maintained to 16, then although there would would be fewer girls in junior single seaters, it wouldn't be many fewer. There is a definite bottleneck present in the current system.
ooh, i forgot her again.

It's a negative multiplier cycle!
:) :)
You're right though. If there were similar numbers of girls as boys in karting I'd expect similar levels of talent, but if there are fewer it somewhat reduces the available talent pool.
Still I have heard that more girls stop racing at a certain point. Which is obviously bad. But no driver should be put through just to fulfil a quota, so if the ones trying aren't good enough... I mean, I'd like to have enough faith in modern karting and junior car team owners that they are looking at talent above all else and that's the reason they aren't coming through rather than bias.
Oh man, gutted.
If that's true that's very curious.
you took the words right out of my fingers!
clearly a generalisation but I think girls are more prone to stopping around that age where karting up to cars is generally seen as more of a boys sport. it shouldnt be like that, but i dont know how you'd change it apart from hoping that we get a decent female f1 driver some time soon
Hello, folks.
Oooh, a Joe show!
One thing's for certain - It will not be cured by Danica Patrick
yeah and the rest of my sentence was going to be "and she needs to not be a girly girl"
If that's true that's very curious.
There were four factors given for this statistic. In no particular order:
* puberty occurs at different ages for men and women; at that stage, women are at a temporary disadvantage. By the time it's resolved at 17-18, a lot of women have already dropped out
* pressure from family and peers. Motorsport is expensive. Families tend to encourage girls to look to academics instead of motorsport and peers tend to encourage girls to do social activities that are less male-dominated. Social psychology means that boys tend to get away more with hobbies that take them away from friends and studies than girls.
* over-scrutiny from stewards but also from competitors. Due to the novelty of women succeeding in motorsport, some people tend to look more closely at the machinery used by women than men. Even though the record of cheating is not significantly different between genders. It was implied that the competitor over-scrutiny was a bigger factor than officialdom's contribution.
* sponsors see women as more of a risk than men due to a lack of previous success for women in the higher echelons of motorsport - this is a consequence of the problem Jon identified. When it comes to motorsport, Perry McCarthy was right - no sterling, no Stirling Moss.
I was hoping Liz Halliday would do well at Le Mans, enough to get a good seat, but she's gone back to horsey things I think
I half agree and half disagree. I think a sensible company would pick a decent girl over a guy if there wasnt much performance difference, its just how you look for that sponsorship in the first place. I think if an awesome woman got into GP2 or even F3 then she wouldn't have trouble finding money.

That's not much help if the companies are so risk-averse that they bring said woman into Formula Ford or FBMW in the first place. A lot of drivers get lost in the transition at the best of times and being a great karter doesn't guarantee that the same driver will do so well in cars. The last thing the companies want to do is sponsor someone with perceived additional risks. Even if those perceptions are no more than fears generated by misinterpreted ancient statistics.
In other news, the T-shirt I hung up to dry this morning with your help is nearly dry :)
Yeah i get that, what i would say is that if you have the money to do well in international karting then you have the money to get into cars. Often they aren't that far apart.
It happens to guys and girls, not always dependant on talent, and as much as I hate to say it, thats motorsport
If this: http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/f1-tilke-designing-200m-austin-track/ is correct, and the track gets built in time, AND my friend doesn't move away from Austin before 2012, I've got a killer place to stay! The airport mentioned is about 15 minutes from my friends house.
Hopefully Tilke doesn't level the whole darn place, it's supposedly somewhat hilly.

They're only not far apart if the sponsors keep them not far apart - which by the sounds of it they're not doing for women.
I dont think its just about women, and top end karting businesses get no return for investment to which they do if you are sponsoring a car in a single seater chanpionship. I think its fair to say that girls get lost in transition, but just as many as guys.

An interesting point. Yet sponsorship was definitely cited as a reason why women who have licences at 14, in 19 cases out of 20, don't have them at 16.
A reason, but I don't think it's the main reason.
I'd be interested to read this report-thing, do you have a link for it?

It was given as one of four reasons, and it's possible the combination is doing more damage than the sum of the parts.
The report was a study done for the RAC Motor Sports Association of Great Britain by Dr Judy Eaton. I haven't seen it on the internet (unfortunately it never got published), but the results are summarised in Beverly Turner's book "The Pits".
It turns out that Dr Judy Eaton has since followed the progress of 35 female racing drivers over a 12-month period, with results underlining the impact of attitudes towards the drivers being a major block to progress even after they cross the kart-to-car barrier.
so right now i'm using the operating system, lucid lynx.

:D
that matches what danica was saying the other day about british karting. i forget where, but if she was first, the boys were send round again to beat her time.
ta, i'll get a copy and have a read, sounds interesting.
The 2 things I have to say are, 1. the study was done 13 years ago, I think it's changed a bit since then, not a huge amount but certainly a bit more accepting of girls in karting and in car racing. 2. I believe the problem lies with them starting in the first place, not in the transition. So many amazing drivers get left behind after each step up.
It's definitely a sexist thing but I don't think that would ever fully leave, and yes it's important for them to beat a girl but its really important for them to beat everyone no matter who they are.
erm: http://twitpic.com/1rj5r8
Woo, I can tell me and Timo could get on just fine, talk about football and that all day.
Hey all, for proper.
am liking f1 teams getting behind the world cup.
A blog about Jason Swales: http://www.metrof1.com/blogs/metrof1/2010/05/driving-school.html
What's not to like?
ahh, awesome post.
Karun Chandhok does Cool Runnings???
http://twitpic.com/1rk2lb
What he forgets is that bobsleighs dont have seatbelts and so that egg will definitely get crushed by the 6 point harness he wears!
he's gaming the rankings!
Typical racing driver. Looking for ever advantage.
He made the NY Times with his egg
http://formulaone.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/05/27/a-little-help-from-his-friends-chandhoks-lucky-egg/?partner=bloomberg
"Chandhok produced an egg from his pocket"
what??
"Ah well yes Michael you may have 7 world titles but are you leading Christines rankings? I think not.
Game over, cheque please."
at least it wasn't pre-cooked
Then he can give Schumacher the egg. Right across his forehead
:D
I cannot understand why Chrome does this to Sidepodcast. It's like it compresses the page so it has horizontal scroll bars, and only closing the browser and re-opening it sorts it. I have Doohickey as my homepage, is that not good?
evening guys :)
evening :)
What OS? I don't have any issue using the site with Chrome on OS X.
chrome is fine for me
blimey ibooks is a bit rubbish
I'm waiting for a similarly sized android tablet with the Kindle app on it.
XP MCE 2k5.
can ya screenshot and twitpic?
ahh, forgot the kindle app.
Gosh the first sync is taking ages
Evening
ooh, you got yours? yay!!
probably not available to you fer'ners.
Yeah the guy came back :)
errr.. that was meant to be in reference to the kindle app.
Hurrah for the guy!
(hearts) that man
ipad app addiction is already out of control.
Not at the moment, will try to.
absolutely!
How long did your first sync take Mr C?
bout a minute.
i don't own anything though. just apps.
I see... I pushed a lot of things over I guess... It's been about an hour so far!
That is one mighty sync.
More sink than sync, really....
wow. what size pad did you get, the 64?
giggles. everything and the kitchen sink
Yeah 64 3G
:)
you're basically filling it right up then. best get a beer.
good evening folks
So far it has copied...
6.12 Gb Music
15 Gb Video
27.7 Gb Applications
0.5 Gb Other
It also took longer because at first I accidentally selected it sync all applications and then it had to spend some time deleting the 87 applications I don't need!!!
:) I'm having a glass of wine... I feel it's better to be a bit more sophisticated now I have an iPad ;)
why have you kept 87 apps you don't need?
Evening Leigh :)
how are we all this evening?
s/sophisticated/stuck up/
:)
howdy
;) At least I know I am :)
Feeling a bit empty after a boring day. Bit of a daze. Hoping food will fix.
I'll swap you it for my shiny pokemon cards
evening btw
Not sure if anyone is interested, but I believe IndyLights qualifying for the "Freedom 100" starts at 8pm on indycar.com (I think, but I need to check the time)
Food, wine and Joe will fix, I should say. :)
Currently getting a tea fix
i'm gonna skip. managed just 3hrs sleep last night. need to catch up in a sec methinks.
The Joe-show was good
:)
8pm it is!!
I'm going to miss tomorrow's race if it is on when I think it's on (5.30)
sleep schmeeep - pep pills will solve all problems
:O
i got the e-mail earlier - i'll double check
yep -5.30pm i'm afraid; think i'll miss the start of it
:/
am just so sleepy. will catch you all, either tomorrow morning, or in a couple of hours, depending.
night.
Can imagine.. Good night..
there's something quite eerie about some of the indycar.com coverage - sometimes the camera is locked on the speedway when all is still, but then they start playing old radio coverage of previous races on the tannoy
it's almost like that kevin costner film where he builds a baseball ground
http://toomuchracing.com/2010/05/26/tmr-game-week-18/
TMR Game is open, I may not be around tomorrow to remind people. May send an email later.
Mr C - if you haven't spotted it already, I think you'll want this app for the iPad.
http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2010/5/10829.html
sweet
:D
Ah, those were the days...
Ooh, and also I bought a ticket last week for Ellie Goulding at Norwich UEA on November 24th. Can't wait! :D
Decided to watch this after all, will listen to Joe tonight. Shouldn't be on for long?
Nice one.
about 1 hour - i think they all get one run each
by the way saavedra will be competing in the indylights race as well
IndyLights:
OMG - how does a team send a driver out to qualify with no fuel?? What the hell...?
Deary me
Justin Wilson's younger brother, Stefan, up next...
Has anyone used much of Wikia at all?
Can't say I've ever used the back end of it, only visiting random wikis on it...
Me too! Just investigating, as it looks like it works in all browsers, unlike our current solution :)
Although you mentioning it led me to visiting it's homepage, which had a game I'm currently stuck on as the main Wiki being advertised which has just helped me on said game!
Ooh, +1 then.
I'm not here but I just had to link this;
Karun tweeted this;
"and as a closing note to the day, the aircon in my hotel room has died, the windows can't be opened and i'm now changing rooms !!"
http://twitter.com/karunchandhok/statuses/14854940623
So Will Buxton replied;
"@karunchandhok Looks like that lucky egg's really working out for you mate."
http://twitter.com/willbuxton/statuses/14854986043
Genius
He didn't feel the rhythm or the rhyme. Most importantly, he didn't get on up because it wasn't bobsled time.
With reference to earlier, the current polesitter for the Indy support race after 11 qualifiers have run (one at a time): Pippa Mann.
Are you thinking of moving the Sidepodwiki over to Wikia, Christine?
Hey everyone... I am dead.
Well, you're typing, so that's a pretty amazing feat.
Just thinking at the moment, yup.
what do be wrong, sir?
I've watched Shaun of the Dead, I know how to prepare for this.
To the Winchester!!!
Those Nike people, evil. Vertical jump, followed by 20m sprint, followed by agility test, followed by a yo-yo test, which is worse than a bleep test. Argh.
Yikes. A Bleep test was bad enough at school, thank you.
This ball is making me act very strange..
hi all.
Are you....dressed up?
My knee cleverly packed up early on. Bless.
And lukeh, I know how much you love James Corden, so have you seen what he's doing this summer?
ITV just don't get it do they? There are so many things wrong with that lineup and their ideas *grumbles*
:D
:D
:D
Evening :)
hey lou
They do have Edgar Davids, which is just about the only good point.
5Live for me then.
i will be tomorrow :s.. leavers day tomorrow *sniff*..
but i had my nails done in a really girly fashion today.
http://twitpic.com/1rlt97
I feel the need to say, it lady who did my nails (family friend) was in charge of doing my nails and made the decision.. it looks nice though.. i think. Just, different.
I have to wear a dress tomorrow :(
Pole for the Freedom 100 is Pippa Mann
Good stuff
:D
Edgar is awesome to be fair. I'm just scratching my head at Pienaar. Sure he's south african... but...???
One is a celeb for the celeb-obessed network, and the other is a random famous South African..
I just went round the local amusement park and saw loads of kids dressed up funny - I was told it's school leavers day here and that they do that...
Does anyone know of a good shooting game for the Wii that's kinda fun? I have the one on Wii Play, any others though?
ah no.. our leavers day is a bit different to that... it's alot more... formal.
We have to get to school early for a champagne breakfast.. followed by pastries with out form tutors.. and a goodbye assembly, then a formal lunch before getting time to prepare for our epic ball in the evening.
it seems to revolve around crying.. and eating.. :S
Sounds like mine too!
that sounds better ;)
Its not a shooting game but Boom Blox is really good fun and gets you thinking and very much a social game. You have to throw items at blocks to solve puzzles and whatnot.
The only other things I can think of are Link's Crossbrow Training and loads of zombie related games...
Yours seemed so organised, yesterday I had an exam in the morning before sneaking into the assembly after missing 10 mins of it, all this time completing missing time with form. Before breakfast, which went fine.
Our leavers day was bring in a shirt for people to sign it or your own clothes, and bring a board game if you like. And a 5 minute assembly. It was rubbish.
School serves alcohol???? Never happened at my school.
Hi all
What happens if you're 17?
I'll check them out, thanks ;)
In return may I recommend the Mario vs. Sonic Winter Olympic Game? It's tons of fun!
I'll watch the IndyLights race tomorrow, but I have to admit that the quality of the field does not fill me with a whole of joy.
Also the fact that they had to draft in a couple of ex-drivers to just fill the field to 16 cars isn't great either.
Still kudos to Pippa Mann - great job to stamp on that pole position
our year 11 leavers day was like yours.. but sixth form is made to be a huge deal. which i suppose it is. it's mainly cause some of us.. me included have been at the school for 15 years... it's going to take alot to be able to say goodbye i think.
Both the Mario Olympic games are great fun (until I get exhausted :P)
Year 11 I rode on the back of a tandem to school, other people had limos and fire engines and stuff. Then had breakfast with the shirt signing and hten cycled home
awww,
15 years?? I've never even lived in the same city for that long!
9pm already. I should see if I can get something useful done.
Im going to the pub :D
15 years, on of my mates (an Arsenal supporting one, no idea how it happened) has had 5 schools in 11 apparantly.
yep.. well it's not but.. but we get a champagne reception at our ball too :)
Too late for that, I say relax ;)
although I am writing the daily so I can't really speak!
not many of our upper 6th are 17 still.. i think about 5 or 6 are..
Bloody students!!! ;)
If they did that at all schools truant levels would drop
haha. I've worked for 9 hours straight on lap simulation. I need food and alcohol!
You've earned it sir... just avoid the triangley things!
i've lived in this house all my life.. and my poor parents have been paying the ridiculous school fees of my school since i was tiny.. i did nursery and reception there too which means 2 of my friends have been with me basically my entire life :)
Wow.
*sigh*.. i suppose i should go get some food.. and make this silly video for our leavers assembly. i can't stop listening to Jonsi though..
Just to call a mate about tomorrow, then maybe a shower and a cup of tea. I meant to do a blog post but I don't know if I have the energy..
true story
Me too re. Jonsi!
i've been singing tornado and around us all day :)
Anyhoo,
I'm going to grab some tea - shall be back at some stage
:)
It's Thursday, so no one can expect anything of you.
My wife asked earlier why I sounded a bit grumpy on the phone at work, even though I was having a decent enough day. All I could say was "I dunno, it's Thursday..."
Which are the essential songs I need to listen to when being introduced to Jonsi?
his entire album Go ;)
omg!..
okay..
Tornado,
Around Us,
Sinking Friendships,
Kolniður,
Boy Lilikoi,
Go Do
... are my favs.. but that's basically everything :P
I'd agree with that.
Although I'd add Sticks and Stones as well
btw... grrrr for calling him the big J in your blog post! ;)
:P:P
I couldn't help myself!
No domestics
You're right Lou, 'J' in Scandinavian countries is pronounced 'yoll', so it's like "Yon-si"
i know! we had this convo yesterday when he started calling him Johnsi..
I have an annoying habit of calling him Jonsi with a J even though I know it's Yonsi. It's quite annoying. It led to me calling him the big J before the gig, which is absolutely awful :)
So he is really the big Y?
Technically yes!
This was posted earlier. Karun does Cool Runnings
http://formulaone.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/05/27/a-little-help-from-his-friends-chandhoks-lucky-egg/?partner=bloomberg
no! his name is Jonsi.. and he is awesome, no need for nicknames!
Jonsi sounds like a nickname. First time I saw it I thout he was called Jones and Jonesi was the nickname
this is also true. :)
That's true, and I've had a real Thursday too :)
I might scratch my Indy qual review and do another idea I had, short and easy post. If I can remember where I saw the thing I saw.
His name is Jon Thor Something... he has THOR, NORSE GOD OF THUNDER in his name :D
well.. it is a nickname.. his name is Jón Þór Birgisson
So not Welsh then?
Just realised the Icelandic letter for the 'th' sound makes a great emoticon:
:Þ
no :)
Not sure if this gains or loses them points
http://twitpic.com/1rm29u
The team were visiting a hospital so that has to be good
http://twitpic.com/1rm1wh
Hiiiiii
I have interwebs :D
woohoo
hello!!
Helllo.
I went to use a computer at the library beside my house. They were using IE5 :S It's shocking....
Does IE5 still work?
Not really no. Every webpage you look at goes all mental...
I am not surprised. Still you don't need to worry about that any more
There's no excuse for not updating them though. It's free!!
They probably need to fill in 27 forms to get permission form their IT people
IE5!!!! The computers might as well be in a skip, the functionality they've got.
Just in case it's been missed or not being discussed, according to this news source:
http://www.auto.it/autosprint/formula_1/2010/05/25-5194/Pirelli+vince+la+gara+delle+gomme+
(Italian article)
Pirelli will be the sole supplier of tyres to F1 for the next 3 years.
True. They will upgrade to IE6 in a year or two's time
http://twitpic.com/1rm1wh
In that pic my word does Bruno look tall!
Never really noticed his height before.
Hah :)
Evening everyone :)
hello!!
hey
Hi Alex
Hello Mr A.
I gotta go to bed. Getting up at 5.30am for a run this morning probably wasn't the smartest thing to do.
Night guys, don't get too cold out there. Temp's dropped to around 25 Andronovs now. Chilly!
I am finally iPadding like mad thanks to the lovely UPS man
Good night
wow.. *is jealous*
That's pretty cold!
See ya mate.
Innit man! I contemplated putting the heating on earlier, then thought a jumper was the best way.
What's the best thing about your iPad then?
Probably the fact it was delivered by UPS and not Royal "oops, I dropped it" Mail.
wow!!! (hearts) iplayer beta :)
What's iplayer beta?
Looks interesting
i like it :)
It's a definite improvement. Wonder if it will be in beta for as long as google stuff is
Lake District is dangerous. Bet they don't put this in their brochure
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20100527/tuk-four-injured-in-lightning-strikes-6323e80.html
It's been beta before, I don't think they took that long over it last time.
Cripes! Moving definitely was a good decision....
Keep your head down if you go back to visit
Katherine stole my iPad!
I got it back though phew!
I'm not all that tall :P
Um... I'm not sure yet. There are a lot of awesome and new things but I also guess this Is a bit like freshers week... I'll be making some mistakes and friends I won't be keeping.
Unless there is someone significantly taller with you then it is aiming at your head. I am sure none of those who were hit were 7 foot 4
Have you played a tune on it yet?
Good night guys!
Not yet... I have watched part of a movie though.
Night sir.
Night!
Night Gavin
Morning all. Do you think if I call DHL they could update my shipping address before they even try and deliver? Want ticket today!
Where are they now?
Boo, called DHL and they can't change it :( Monday it is :(
They are in the couriers van!

oh my god! youtube clips of jonsi's gig yesterday make me incredibly happy.
eeeek :D:D
Evening all, the pub says hi, am back now to do some more work.
Hi pub.
Bye from me, exam tomorrow, ciao folks.
aw good luck with your exam RG!
Something I said? Night RG.
P.S Eurovision woop
Good luck RG!
That's the spirit #needsmoreestonia #nothere
good luck
hi folks,
just a brief stop off - i've started an e-petition to get turn 5 at barcelona renamed to "sam bird corner" in honour of his overtaking exploits at said corner during this years GP2 feature race.
Anyone willing to help correct this long overdue change, please go here: http://www.gopetition.co.uk/online/36658.html
:)
*cough*
#hasntseenityet, got a you tube?
oh.my.god! Windows movie maker is the creation of evil.... it.is.awful!
i need a mac.
wait, overtaking Clos?
I've made several dozen videos on that awful program. It is utterly useless in every way
not just clos - he overtook nearly a dozen cars in one corner during the race
just picked them all off one by one
i.can.not.cope... a 4 min video has taken all day so far!
ahhh, stolen from Mr Buxton i see ;)
yeah looks epic, just found a video. love the name :D
there's you tube, but it's blurry and not in english - it was actually a great race
stolen? i prefer permanently borrowed...
:)
haha
I forgot to check in with those few bets i made of about £3 each for the Spanish GP on 3 sites... I expected to lose them all, was just clearing them out as it wasn't worth transferring them to my bank account.
Ladbrokes: £2.80 on Webs to win got me £6.30.
Paddy Power: £0.75 for same got £1.69. £0.75 on Alonso to win "betting without Red Bull" got me £2.44 and I got £0.75 because Webber won by more than 6 seconds. So that account is now on £4.88.
Thinking I might try something this weekend.
£4.88!!! You may have issues Pat...
Ant + F3 + Brands Hatch
Epic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cnuJGKfVP4&feature=related
I should've said £3 total bets on each site, not each bet.
It was £3.80, I won a pound! I don't ever win on this stuff which is why I gave it up a while ago.
No catherine in turkey! Noo!
Helio is at 3/1 at Ladbrokes.. so that's £2 on him :)
I'm always scared that if I put proper money on I'll get hooked and I don't want that.. so token amounts for fun.
:(
seems like reasonable odds.
i'm not sure i could ever bet on the indy500 though - the race is simply too long and anything can happen over that distance
Well the F1 odds aren't worth it, they've cottoned on to Red Bull's pace and the unpredictablity of the 500 makes it interesting.
