Today is a daily with a difference, as regular writer James is unwell and Christine managed to forget to cover. Predictably this won't be the most punctual of posts, although I do have a genuinely good excuse for once. I've just finished editing the latest Aside with Joe podcast (intro overdubs at 4am are always fun), and it's sounding brilliant. Expect it to be available for download around midday today.

F1 free practice gets underway in Turkey tomorrow, but in the meantime here are some stories to pass the time.

  • The big news of the morning, says that Herman Tilke will be designing the Austin F1 track in the USA. God help us all. Admittedly this was always the likely option, but Adam Cooper did some digging and unearthed the facts. His whole post is insightful and worth reading.
  • Sebastian, put together a fine post in response to the Austin news, tackling the subject of Tilke's dreadful reputation amongst F1 fans head on. Go read now (and don't forget to comment).
  • Away from Austin, Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen have been confirmed as attendees at the Classic Team Lotus Festival in Snetterton, June 20. The T127 will also make an appearance, before bizarrely, the F1 transporter does a lap. Sold!

That pretty much covers everything worth knowing so far today. I'm patiently awaiting the arrival of a non-specific tablet device, which likely to change my life forever (or which might at least offer a new means of following Formula 1).

In all probability, the thing won't arrive on time or in one piece, much like Amy's Monza tickets, which are right now closer to me than they are to either Italy or Australia. Happy Thursday.

found a comment on the Austin thing from someone from Austin, not sure if that letter was really sent or not, but that is view of somebody not happy about having F1 in the backyard - link (plug alert I shoud add :-) )

That doesn't surprise me a bit. Austin is the epicenter for hippies in the south. You would get the same response anywhere on the west coast if they were build a track there.

Funny, I am just finishing a post of 10 reasons why you should attend a f1 race in Austin.

I already received an email from an event company from Austin offering their services in case I plan to do something in Austin during F1 :-) "Need a SAT truck? Need Dancers? Need a Stage or a Venue? Throwing a party?

Need an associate producer? Need a correspondent? Need a Venue or a PA? Truss and Lights? Stagehands?" - so, some people also see a benefit :-)

  • Amy27/05/2010 at 04:10

Monza ticket update: no updates since they left Heathrow 12 hours ago. I hope this means they are on a long flight

my first trip to the US years back took me to Dallas of all the places. I must say that that area did not look to me anywhere near like F1 friendly country :-) from your description Austin looks like entirely different world

  • Dan Brunell27/05/2010 at 04:22

I love it when I push publish on a story and immediately see TONS of errors.

  • Amy27/05/2010 at 04:22

You had me sold at bbq. I would love to do Austin because i'd love to do Montreal and two races makes a trip to the other side of the world more economical than one! Sadly my 2012 sports travel plans are already set for London and I don't think I can afford 2 trips in one year :(

Dallas stinks. It's the gateway to East Texas which is a place you never, ever want to be.

Yes. Though I've got a break in the morning routine as the postman hasn't turned up yet (I'm covering for the post-opener and sort of cleared some of my stuff yesterday). So I'm writing a task list I can add things to, in case I forget some of the new stuff I'm supposed to be doing every month.

    Help!

I've learned a new skill - just handwashed my very first item of laundry (my Force India/Fisichella T-shirt turned out to have rather complicated washing instructions and it seemed unwise to put it in the washing machine pile in case Mum missed something crucial). However I now need to work out how to dry it. The same washing instructions say "do not tumble dry", so I turned to the Guide to Hanging Laundry. It says "Hang clothes on megablastic dryers", which is a good alternative... ...except for people like me with no dryers (megablastic or otherwise) to hang clothes on.

Could you clever Sidepodders please suggest an alternative drying method that I can do in my room? Normally clothes at my house dry outside, but "outside" in this case features the risk of rain and loose animals, so I'd rather dry it indoors where I know the T-shirt will be wearable tomorrow.

P.S. I promise to post a picture of my success to my Flick account, since the Sidepodcast drop.io account has an uncertain future.

You can hang it on a hanger and stick it in hte airing cupboard if you have one, or just in a doorway. It wont necessarily be dry by tomorrow though

Well we have this problem a lot in Danish apartments - conventional wisdom seems to be to hang on a shower curtain pole (or if your shower is in some sort of cubicle, a pole going across the top of it).

Failing that, an indoor clothes horse or the back of a plastic chair.

Or, if you can access your boiler, hang it up in there?

I like the movies, but they're so hard to watch. The last one, I reckon if they didn't take all that money from the NZ Tourist Board they could have chopped off at least an hour of long shots!

Or draped over a radiator (or on a frame hanging off the radiator). Usually better in winter when radiator is in use, but serves as an airing spot. Make sure window is open a touch or the room may get damp.

Only if they wanted lots of complaints from the Tolkein anoraks (it is adapting a rather long trilogy.) It's a good length if you've read and like the books. As a film series in itself... ...it's a bit on the lengthy side!

Apparently it was only a typo that caused the original letter to have the head office's address (they have other company offices, one of which is where the job actually is). In that case, the panel would probably have received a shock when they phoned me to ask where I was and I replied "Over 100 miles away where I was told to go. Why haven't you got here yet?"

You're only allowed to keep your starting position if you crash after qualifying. Since it only moves him back a place and the first car is faster it makes sense.

Possibly because the first practitioners of it were the sort of people who would otherwise be sailing or horse riding - both sports that compete as "just people". Most other sports weren't - either because they were invented by the working classes instead of the upper classes (and therefore it tended to be the men who had time to play the sports initially) or they were invented so long ago that they predated the concept of gender equality. If my theory is correct, then sports invented in the future will tend to be "just people" unless those inventing it can demonstrate a very obvious reason why they shouldn't be.

Yes, please Christine, give "One-Finger" Seb a big minus score next week.

Having said that, can't wait to see the prudish BBC say "Randy Mandy"! :D

I would guess so... Perhaps that is a question for my 'audience' with Joe... Either that or he has a penchant for world airlines...

  • RubberGoat27/05/2010 at 13:28

here's a question. in tennis, there's mens, womens and mixed. in athletics and football, there's probably something similar. how come motorsport it's just people?

I used to play Indoor Netball in a mixed team. The Women gave out the biggest hits. I don't think it makes that much of a difference these days...

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/05/2010 at 13:28

Because... nobody watched? Or it had no promotion? They weren't very good? Or it was just rubbish?

Partially A+B, but also because I think the quality of the field was really lacking. Any women in motorsports that I know of tend to move up the "known ranks"

I've always thought the problem occurs after karting, when girls attempt to make the transition to cars - there simply does not seem to be the support to get girls from karting into racecar machinery

Shunting the series into the depths of digital TV probably didn't help. Still, I think the future of female motorsport competition is alongside rather than separate from male competitors - there's no physical or mental reason why they would not be equally capable in a sport of this type.

  • RubberGoat27/05/2010 at 13:31

Beats me. There are physiological differences between Men and Women, but in most cases they're not that big.

I suppose in top level sport where your body is the primary tool for being successful that the extra 1/10th of a percent matters. But I always thought that if you were fit enough, it didn't matter in Motorsports?

The problem is between ages 14 and 16, showing that there's not only not enough support to get girls from karting to racecar machinery (and you're completely right about that), but something is stopping women from staying in karting long enough to get the achievement records needed to get into good car racing teams or make best use of them.

Because the original version was played by rich noblemen back in the 1500s (Henry VIII used to play it quite a lot when he was young). As a result it predated the concept of gender equality - the upper classes were in a position to use it before the working classes but even they didn't do gender equality back then. The version we know today was a version created to utilise the lovely big lawns that became popular in pre-Victorian England. Many of the rules are very different, but some things simply got copied over. That said, modern tennis has got a mixed doubles version, which is something royal/real tennis never had.

The main area in which men and women have different physical capacities is explosive power. Otherwise it's possible to train a man and a woman to the same level of fitness. Most sports require a certain amount of explosive power, but motorsports only really requries that if you get it wrong and have to suddenly correct a slide or something. Otherwise stamina, consistency of movement, heat resistance and multi-tasking are more important - all things which men and women are equally capable of doing.

Subversion: My first and only individual medley race in 2002 - a regional swimming gala - had me in a race with 5 men, some of which had competed in that stroke before. There were four other men (and two women) in the other heat. I had the slowest entry time of the six in my heat but ended up with a bronze medal :)

Broader non-subversion: Every other medal in the competition was won by men. Swimming is a discipline where explosive power is important...

Some Girls are as good but i dont think its a thing about specifically supporting women, i just think that the girls that do come up into cars arent as good. thats not a sweeping statement saying that all girls arent and will never be, but in the past and at the moment, they arent as good

The reason why I say it's between 14 and 16 is because there was research done on the matter indicating that 40% of 14-year-olds with a British karting licence are female but only 2% of 16-year-olds with a British karting licence are female. If the 60/40 split was maintained to 16, then although there would would be fewer girls in junior single seaters, it wouldn't be many fewer. There is a definite bottleneck present in the current system.

You're right though. If there were similar numbers of girls as boys in karting I'd expect similar levels of talent, but if there are fewer it somewhat reduces the available talent pool.

Still I have heard that more girls stop racing at a certain point. Which is obviously bad. But no driver should be put through just to fulfil a quota, so if the ones trying aren't good enough... I mean, I'd like to have enough faith in modern karting and junior car team owners that they are looking at talent above all else and that's the reason they aren't coming through rather than bias.

clearly a generalisation but I think girls are more prone to stopping around that age where karting up to cars is generally seen as more of a boys sport. it shouldnt be like that, but i dont know how you'd change it apart from hoping that we get a decent female f1 driver some time soon

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2010 at 14:16

If that's true that's very curious.

There were four factors given for this statistic. In no particular order:

    * puberty occurs at different ages for men and women; at that stage, women are at a temporary disadvantage. By the time it's resolved at 17-18, a lot of women have already dropped out

    * pressure from family and peers. Motorsport is expensive. Families tend to encourage girls to look to academics instead of motorsport and peers tend to encourage girls to do social activities that are less male-dominated. Social psychology means that boys tend to get away more with hobbies that take them away from friends and studies than girls.

    * over-scrutiny from stewards but also from competitors. Due to the novelty of women succeeding in motorsport, some people tend to look more closely at the machinery used by women than men. Even though the record of cheating is not significantly different between genders. It was implied that the competitor over-scrutiny was a bigger factor than officialdom's contribution.

    * sponsors see women as more of a risk than men due to a lack of previous success for women in the higher echelons of motorsport - this is a consequence of the problem Jon identified. When it comes to motorsport, Perry McCarthy was right - no sterling, no Stirling Moss.

  • Pat W27/05/2010 at 14:16

I half agree and half disagree. I think a sensible company would pick a decent girl over a guy if there wasnt much performance difference, its just how you look for that sponsorship in the first place. I think if an awesome woman got into GP2 or even F3 then she wouldn't have trouble finding money.

That's not much help if the companies are so risk-averse that they bring said woman into Formula Ford or FBMW in the first place. A lot of drivers get lost in the transition at the best of times and being a great karter doesn't guarantee that the same driver will do so well in cars. The last thing the companies want to do is sponsor someone with perceived additional risks. Even if those perceptions are no more than fears generated by misinterpreted ancient statistics.

Yeah i get that, what i would say is that if you have the money to do well in international karting then you have the money to get into cars. Often they aren't that far apart.

It happens to guys and girls, not always dependant on talent, and as much as I hate to say it, thats motorsport

An interesting point. Yet sponsorship was definitely cited as a reason why women who have licences at 14, in 19 cases out of 20, don't have them at 16.

A reason, but I don't think it's the main reason.

I'd be interested to read this report-thing, do you have a link for it?

It was given as one of four reasons, and it's possible the combination is doing more damage than the sum of the parts.

The report was a study done for the RAC Motor Sports Association of Great Britain by Dr Judy Eaton. I haven't seen it on the internet (unfortunately it never got published), but the results are summarised in Beverly Turner's book "The Pits".

It turns out that Dr Judy Eaton has since followed the progress of 35 female racing drivers over a 12-month period, with results underlining the impact of attitudes towards the drivers being a major block to progress even after they cross the kart-to-car barrier.

that matches what danica was saying the other day about british karting. i forget where, but if she was first, the boys were send round again to beat her time.

ta, i'll get a copy and have a read, sounds interesting.

The 2 things I have to say are, 1. the study was done 13 years ago, I think it's changed a bit since then, not a huge amount but certainly a bit more accepting of girls in karting and in car racing. 2. I believe the problem lies with them starting in the first place, not in the transition. So many amazing drivers get left behind after each step up.

  • Jon Waldock27/05/2010 at 14:57

It's definitely a sexist thing but I don't think that would ever fully leave, and yes it's important for them to beat a girl but its really important for them to beat everyone no matter who they are.

I cannot understand why Chrome does this to Sidepodcast. It's like it compresses the page so it has horizontal scroll bars, and only closing the browser and re-opening it sorts it. I have Doohickey as my homepage, is that not good?

Pole for the Freedom 100 is Pippa Mann

    Good stuff

    :D

  • Lukeh27/05/2010 at 19:58

They do have Edgar Davids, which is just about the only good point.

Edgar is awesome to be fair. I'm just scratching my head at Pienaar. Sure he's south african... but...???

  • Pat W27/05/2010 at 19:59

ITV just don't get it do they? There are so many things wrong with that lineup and their ideas *grumbles*

One is a celeb for the celeb-obessed network, and the other is a random famous South African..

  • RubberGoat27/05/2010 at 19:59

i will be tomorrow :s.. leavers day tomorrow *sniff*..

I just went round the local amusement park and saw loads of kids dressed up funny - I was told it's school leavers day here and that they do that...

  • RubberGoat27/05/2010 at 20:00

Does anyone know of a good shooting game for the Wii that's kinda fun? I have the one on Wii Play, any others though?

  • lou27/05/2010 at 20:01

I just went round the local amusement park and saw loads of kids dressed up funny - I was told it's school leavers day here and that they do that...

ah no.. our leavers day is a bit different to that... it's alot more... formal.

We have to get to school early for a champagne breakfast.. followed by pastries with out form tutors.. and a goodbye assembly, then a formal lunch before getting time to prepare for our epic ball in the evening.

it seems to revolve around crying.. and eating.. :S

Its not a shooting game but Boom Blox is really good fun and gets you thinking and very much a social game. You have to throw items at blocks to solve puzzles and whatnot.

The only other things I can think of are Link's Crossbrow Training and loads of zombie related games...

Yours seemed so organised, yesterday I had an exam in the morning before sneaking into the assembly after missing 10 mins of it, all this time completing missing time with form. Before breakfast, which went fine.

Our leavers day was bring in a shirt for people to sign it or your own clothes, and bring a board game if you like. And a 5 minute assembly. It was rubbish.

I'll check them out, thanks ;)

In return may I recommend the Mario vs. Sonic Winter Olympic Game? It's tons of fun!

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/05/2010 at 20:05

I'll watch the IndyLights race tomorrow, but I have to admit that the quality of the field does not fill me with a whole of joy.

Also the fact that they had to draft in a couple of ex-drivers to just fill the field to 16 cars isn't great either.

Still kudos to Pippa Mann - great job to stamp on that pole position

  • lou27/05/2010 at 20:05

our year 11 leavers day was like yours.. but sixth form is made to be a huge deal. which i suppose it is. it's mainly cause some of us.. me included have been at the school for 15 years... it's going to take alot to be able to say goodbye i think.

  • Lukeh27/05/2010 at 20:06

Year 11 I rode on the back of a tandem to school, other people had limos and fire engines and stuff. Then had breakfast with the shirt signing and hten cycled home

You're right Lou, 'J' in Scandinavian countries is pronounced 'yoll', so it's like "Yon-si"

I have an annoying habit of calling him Jonsi with a J even though I know it's Yonsi. It's quite annoying. It led to me calling him the big J before the gig, which is absolutely awful :)

    hi folks,

just a brief stop off - i've started an e-petition to get turn 5 at barcelona renamed to "sam bird corner" in honour of his overtaking exploits at said corner during this years GP2 feature race.

Anyone willing to help correct this long overdue change, please go here: http://www.gopetition.co.uk/online/36658.html

    :)

I forgot to check in with those few bets i made of about £3 each for the Spanish GP on 3 sites... I expected to lose them all, was just clearing them out as it wasn't worth transferring them to my bank account.

Ladbrokes: £2.80 on Webs to win got me £6.30.

Paddy Power: £0.75 for same got £1.69. £0.75 on Alonso to win "betting without Red Bull" got me £2.44 and I got £0.75 because Webber won by more than 6 seconds. So that account is now on £4.88.

Thinking I might try something this weekend.

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/05/2010 at 22:52

£4.88!!! You may have issues Pat...

I should've said £3 total bets on each site, not each bet.

It was £3.80, I won a pound! I don't ever win on this stuff which is why I gave it up a while ago.

  • Amy27/05/2010 at 22:54

    No catherine in turkey! Noo!

  • Pat W27/05/2010 at 23:04

Helio is at 3/1 at Ladbrokes.. so that's £2 on him :)

I'm always scared that if I put proper money on I'll get hooked and I don't want that.. so token amounts for fun.

  • lou27/05/2010 at 23:05

    seems like reasonable odds.

i'm not sure i could ever bet on the indy500 though - the race is simply too long and anything can happen over that distance

Well the F1 odds aren't worth it, they've cottoned on to Red Bull's pace and the unpredictablity of the 500 makes it interesting.
