Welcome to your Australian Saturday Daily. As an Apple fan, the first thing I have to mention is the release of new MacBook Pro models yesterday. There is much excitement about these new models at Sidepodcast headquarters because of the inclusion of a new technology called Thunderbolt. Remarkably similar to Thunderbirds (Are GO!), I am reliably informed that it has also quickly been accepted by non-computery type people here. I make no comment on the name as I was always taught that if you can't say anything nice…

I suggest reading the Wiki entry on Thunderbolt and if you still have questions, ask here in the comments as there are plenty of experts. I was informed many years ago that Apple commissioned Intel to create the technology, but I have no proof so lets just go with wikipedia on this one. Besides, who really cares? Yes, I am a nerd... :p

In real world terms, I am looking forward to being able to hook up two high resolution displays to a laptop but as with any new technology, it will take time for it to filter out into the marketplace and for peripherals to appear. I am officially excited!

There is an advert on Australian TV at the moment that mention the price of petrol in 1991 was 60 cents per litre. It currently sits at around $1.30 per litre in Sydney. How much was it in your part of the world at that time and how much is it now?

Money. It's not a comfortable subject for most of us. But thanking the good people at Sidepodcast? Easy. I'm going to give them some money. Maybe you should too? I am reminded of this awesome post from Janna last year. Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY JANNA!

Crashed Ice. What a name for a band! Oh, it's not a band, it's some kind of ice skating race thingy on in Moscow today. It's on at 3:45pm London time and you can look on Sidepodcast for people talking about it, or look at the Red Bull website.

The genius that is Lukeh strikes again.

I'll leave you today with one of Australia's (maybe even the whole world's) favourite songs by AC/DC. There are several youtube videos for you because I want a green Holden ute, and they explain how I was reminded of this (thunderbolt is similar to thunderstruck right?)

Tomorrow is the annual Italian Festival in Melbourne, for some reason there will be a Red Bull car there. Ferrari would make more sense.

They're also trying to make the worlds biggest pizza so I want to go along on the chance I might get to eat some.

"MARK Webber said the return of the Australian Grand Prix to pole position on the formula one calendar would help quell renewed calls for the race to be axed.

Webber said rumblings surrounding the cost of the event always surfaced as it drew closer but the fact Australia had replaced Bahrain as the season-opener would boost the GP."

oh Mr Webber, I hope you're right

    #sidepodspace

I picked up all the following info from the superb Spaceflight Now site that Pat linked to on the day of the launch rather than hacking through 50 pages of PDF on the NASA site to find them. This site sells NASA far better than NASA does.

The shuttle will dock with the ISS today and the first thing to watch out for is the backflip manouvre that lets the ISS crew photograph the underside of the shuttle to check for damage. This provides some of the best footage of the whole mission with the shuttle backflipping with the Earth in the background. The times listed are Eastern so add 5 hours for the UK or if you are anywhere else in the world I suggest you do your own conversion as my record with time zones is not great.

THere are two spacewalks on the mission on Monday and Wednesday with the shuttle landing scheduled for the following Monday.

    # 1:06 p.m. EST: Discovery backflip

    # Feb. 26: Docking to space station @ 2:19 p.m.

    # Feb. 28: Spacewalk No. 1 @ 11:15 a.m.

    # March 1: Install cargo module on station

    # March 2: Spacewalk No. 2 @ 10:15 a.m.

    # March 5: Undocking from station @ 7:47 a.m.

    # March 7: LANDING in Florida @ 12:47 p.m. EST

    http://www.spaceflightnow.com/shuttle/sts133/status.html

  • Steven Roy26/02/2011 at 11:51

One other thing I learned today which I should have figured out before is that Steve Bowen who is replacing Tim Kopra after his bike accident also flew on the last shuttle mission so becomes the first person to fly consecutive missions. What I have yet to find out is if this means NASA no longer has back up crews for each mission. Not to have them would seem short-sighted but someone can't train for one mission while they are training for and flying the preceeding mission. It's not like NASA is short of astronauts.

  • Janna26/02/2011 at 12:07

Thanks for the #sidepodspace updates Steven.

I was talking about the shuttle launch at work and one of the girls asked me how I know about things. I explained that I talk to people on the internet who are interested and share their knowledge.

Sidepodcast, teaching you something new every day :)

Me too. This site Pat found is so much better than NASA. They have even figured out how to embed NASA TV on a page with other stuff on it and the feed loads about ten times faster there than at NASA.

    Excellent :)

Afternoon all. I've just been to let some dogs out. Nice to get air, although the rain showers meant we cancelled golf (possibly prematurely).

    So much traffic..

  • Steven Roy26/02/2011 at 13:16

Time for me to head out an give some much valued advice to a football referee. THey really appreciate.

Those of you who are staying inside where it is safe enjoy Crashed Ice and space stuff and whatever else takes your fancy.

For those of you heading outside I have one thing to say. Let's be careful out there.

I prefer the taste of stuffing when it wasn't actually in the chicken anyway. So I'm not sure why we call it stuffing, its more 'breadcrumbs and herbs and stuff in a bowl'

I will throw to the comments for suggestions on the next one I should try http://www.fraus.com.au/the_fraus_range/hot_chocolate_flavours.asp although theres a few missing off that list, like the rasperry and the pistachio that I've tried in the past.

tis never an issue I have, lemons are one of my favourite fruits to snack on. Mmmm sour and tasty.

    I beg your pardon?

That sounds as crazy as having mint sauce on all kinds of meat... madness...

  • Amy26/02/2011 at 14:48

Just reading that makes my mouth go 'nngngngn'

When I was a kid they started out absolutely covered in sugar but as I got older I put less and less sugar until I had none. My family kept the sugar on theirs, so they think I'm odd.

You're the exact opposite of me. I'm allergic to even the slightest drop of lemon juice...

  • Lukeh26/02/2011 at 14:49

A few people in my office have had that reaction after watching me eat them, it doesn't tend to end well for them :D

DanicaWatch: She's overtaken cars and is now 16th, leading the cars 2 laps down. There are no cars 1 lap down so she'll get the Lucky Dog at the next yellow to get one lap back.

You say that as if there will surely be a yellow flag..

62 laps to go and this is NASCAR.

There will be one with 10 or 15 to go, if there isn't I'll find a hat to eat :) :)

  • Janna27/02/2011 at 00:06

I was given chocolates, some iPod speakers which are currently working hard with my iPod Touch on shuffle and an iTunes voucher. What can I spend £15.00 on?

  • Pat W27/02/2011 at 00:06

The stands look a bit empty but @RyanMcGeeESPN said tomorrow's race is sold out.

  • Lukeh27/02/2011 at 00:06

I just had a really good giggle at the absolute nonsense James Allen has produced today, deary me

Ah, since then the leader has sent two cars 1 lap down.

  • Christine27/02/2011 at 00:09

He needs to slow down a bit.

  • Lukeh27/02/2011 at 00:09

blog. Noticed chainbear mentioned it so I went to read and it's just absolute nonsense. He says that women should be in f1 now because there are more buttons on a steering wheel and they are better at multitasking (with no source) so it is now the best time for them to be a driver because of this.

Heh, I can watch CSI, play Football Manager and write a blog post all at the same time, so multitask that Allen.

(So the post may be about Football Manager...)

Ferrari want women drivers so women drivers should be in F1.

    sounds like a plan.

  • Pat W27/02/2011 at 00:21

12 cars on the lead lap, Sadler got the lucky dog.

    =

  • Pat W27/02/2011 at 00:23

Ooh something is happening, Edwards is catching Busch

  • Pat W27/02/2011 at 00:26

    15 to go

Edwards making passing attempts for the lead, almost makes it.. Nobody else in contention.

    Danica 17th

  • Mr C27/02/2011 at 00:29

    15 to go

i gave up with team radio, back to commentary.

  • Mr C27/02/2011 at 00:33

twas okay, thought that was a yellow

  • Pat W27/02/2011 at 00:34

Busch wins after leading all 200 laps, dominant.

  • Mr C27/02/2011 at 00:34

A slow car and a spinner and they stay green, wow

    not nascar at all!

although flags clearly have nothing to do with safety.

    Me too.

I don't think they go yellow after the white flag unless it is big but I was surprised about the slow car.

  • Pat W27/02/2011 at 00:36

Cup race is Sunday at 8pm GMT. I guess you have to say Busch and Edwards are looking good.

  • Pat W27/02/2011 at 00:38

Danica finished 17th, the first of those 3 laps down.

Similar position I think? And the extra lap/two was down to being a short track. Not awful, could do better.

Cheers for the commenting space. :)

Don't know if anyone will be watching Sunday's race, I might not be home for the start. Tbh if the race is the same as this one I'm not too bothered but the quality of drivers being better might make a better race.
