Hello there, it's Christine again, I'm standing in for the lovely Lou

As our favourite photography lass has some university work to do

Whilst I'm waiting for this week's debrief to export I have found the time

To make this special for Ms Lou and get it all to rhyme

First off, let's start with Big Picture because it's really rather good

Sam Michael talks technology and Williams talk food

Meanwhile Sergio Perez has taken his Sauber to Mexico

Ted was there taking notes and pictures, what a long way to go!

In Guadalajara to film Sergio Perez street run. He'll make F1 massive in Mexico. Pics later.

TedKravitz's Twitter avatarTedKravitz

And here's the promised picture of Sergio showing off his car

A mass of fans showed up, 200,000 to cheer on their new star

Sergio Perez wows the crowds in Guadalajara

Sergio Perez wows the crowds in Guadalajara

He completed two great stints to give the crowds a taste of Formula One

Fifteen minutes on each, a brilliant demonstration run

On to other things, yesterday we watched Crashed Ice

In Moscow it was minus 20 degrees, which doesn't sound too nice

Later on, we missed Match of the Day, and NASCAR was on as well

There's clearly far too much sport on, as near as I can tell

In non F1-news, last time I wrote we talked live streams

And Amazon Prime members getting all the TV of their dreams

Speculation now arises that they could get Kindles for free

And whilst I don't desire the device, how cool would that be?

The Debrief, it has finished, why not head over and check it out

We thought it would be short but there's always lots to talk about!

I'd better wrap this up because by golly, it's past midnight

I'll see you in the comments, and hope your Sunday is sunny and bright!

    what an awesome daily. Wow!

    Just awesomeness.

  • RG27/02/2011 at 00:16

To sum up this daily I'm going to say its super-duper-unbelievably-fantastic-sensationally-unique-terrific-marvellous-awesome.

Oh and I hope its wet and miserable, not sunny and bright, I hate the latter on match days.

  • Steven Roy27/02/2011 at 00:17

Great daily Christine. Love the rhyming.

-20 is not cold for Moscow. It gets to -30 in the winter

  • lou27/02/2011 at 00:28

♥ ♥ ♥ this is awesome! :) Thanks for covering Christine. Listening to the podcast now as i write up my photography. If i end up putting a formula 1 reference in there i blame you ;)

    Love the rhyming Daily

If you want more racing after the NASCAR, there is a World Superbike race live from Phillip Island in Australia in ten minutes (first race of two this weekend). I'm going to skip that though.

The steering wheels aren't that bad. I don't know why drivers are so worried about them.

The steering wheels aren't that bad. I don't know why drivers are so worried about them.

I sometimes wonder when the teams will see sense and simply stuff QUERTY keyboards on the wheels, since by this point every driver is likely to be more familiar with one than they ever will be with the ever-changing interface that currently is known as the F1 on-wheel dashboard...

    Hi guys.

    How was the trip back?

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2011 at 01:35

    Hi guys.

Hello! Good to hear you've got back :)

  • Kai back home27/02/2011 at 01:36

Did the flight go better this time

    hehe

Yes, somewhat. But I got to fly TO Prague with a youth orchestra and....wait for it....BACK with them! The girl behind me wouldn't stop hitting the seat for the last 4 hours, even when I asked her to (that's probably why she kept doing it), the tv in the seat stopped working after the first 3 hours of a 9 hour flight, and....well, just don't fly Delta.

  • Pat W27/02/2011 at 01:37

Vince Welch who we just saw in the NASCAR pits for ESPN (and does same for their IndyCar races), has just tweeted to congratulate Kevin Lee for getting a similar job for Versus IndyCar coverage.

Rumours have been floating around the twittersphere for the last week that Versus are shaking up their on-air 'talent' now NBC is involved. Jack Arute could be gone.

  • Kai back home27/02/2011 at 01:37

At least I didn't have a drunk couple next to me this time.

  • Pat W27/02/2011 at 01:38

The girl behind me wouldn't stop hitting the seat for the last 4 hours, even when I asked her to (that's probably why she kept doing it),

Did you not turn around and provide an evil glare?

What are the chances of having the same orchestra on 2 flights?

  • Kai back home27/02/2011 at 01:40

Did you not turn around and provide an evil glare?

Several. And I even asked her to please stop hitting the seat so much, then I finally ripped the earphones out of my ears after I had been sitting up straight in my seat to avoid touching my back to it and I turned around and said I couldn't sit up any further. I couldn't. The lady in front of me had put her seat alllll the way back. Oy.

  • Kai back home27/02/2011 at 01:40

What are the chances of having the same orchestra on 2 flights?

I don't know. It was band geek heaven. (hell for teachers on vacation)

You should have offered to swap seats and kicked lumps out of her back

  • Kai back home27/02/2011 at 01:42

I could've threatened her with 'my Scottish friend' who won't take kindly to this....

it's sunday and sunday dailies should feature a podcast from the archive, so i'm going to add a late addition via the comments.

i've just learned via @scobleizer that recording artist and podsafe music pioneer derek k. miller is fighting a loosing battle with cancer. he's blogging about things here: http://www.penmachine.com/2011/02/little-less-each-day

the link to sidepodcast is we've used derek's songs in the past, most notably in our canada preview video from a few years back. so my podcast from the archives today is this one featuring 'Fresh Snow in the Valley':

hope you can listen and enjoy at some point.

Anything dramatic or just a trim? I love getting my hair cut, feels so full afterwards.

  • Amy27/02/2011 at 04:26

just a trim but my hair dresser insists on spending 45 minutes straightening before she cuts. I don't mind, its about the only time i wear it straight!

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 11:48

Oh noes I've made a terrible error...

I had a couple of weeks of cheerful posts lined up... And I've accidentally published part 7 when I meant to publish part 5...

So should I make part 7 part 5 and distroy all of the links? Or should I post 5 and 6 in future weeks?

Or as my friend Nick suggested on the phone (in a really sneaky way) claim that the 3 scan photos from part 4 were actually reasons 4, 5 and 6?

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2011 at 12:09

Or as my friend Nick suggested on the phone (in a really sneaky way) claim that the 3 scan photos from part 4 were actually reasons 4, 5 and 6?

I'd make Part 7 part 5, and then put the links in at the end of the new part 7 as a supplement.

  • Christine27/02/2011 at 12:11

Oh noes I've made a terrible error...

    This is a tricky one.

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:18

    This is a tricky one.

I turn to you Christine... You're my only hope.

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:19

I'd make Part 7 part 5, and then put the links in at the end of the new part 7 as a supplement.

But if I make 7 part 5 the link will break, unless I just change the title but leave the link which says part 7...

  • Christine27/02/2011 at 12:19

So should I make part 7 part 5 and distroy all of the links? Or should I post 5 and 6 in future weeks?

I think I am favouring this one, but what links are broken?

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:20

But if I make 7 part 5 the link will break, unless I just change the title but leave the link which says part 7...

Or do you mean that I should just release all of the parts now... Then have a link at the bottom of the new part 7 that says, you may not have realised I have actually published 2 more of these here's the link to 5 and 6?

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2011 at 12:20

But if I make 7 part 5 the link will break, unless I just change the title but leave the link which says part 7...

Change title and leave the link be. You can always name the part 7 link "therealpart7" or something...

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:22

I think I am favouring this one, but what links are broken?

the link currently ends with http://gamboling.co.uk/2011/02/27/reasons-to-be-cheerful-part-7/

So if I change it to end part-5 then the bitly links etc will all be wrong.

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2011 at 12:22

Or do you mean that I should just release all of the parts now... Then have a link at the bottom of the new part 7 that says, you may not have realised I have actually published 2 more of these here's the link to 5 and 6?

No, I mean make the already-published part 7 part 5 and re-number your other links accordingly. The parts 5 and 6 links go at the end of part 7 to help navigation.

  • Christine27/02/2011 at 12:22

So if I change it to end part-5 then the bitly links etc will all be wrong.

    Oh, yes, I see. Hmmmmmm.

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:23

So if I change it to end part-5 then the bitly links etc will all be wrong.

    Oh, yes, I see. Hmmmmmm.

And some other sites have already linked to part 7.

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2011 at 12:23

So if I change it to end part-5 then the bitly links etc will all be wrong.

Assuming your blog platform allows the title and link to be altered separately, leave the link called that and simply re-title.

  • Christine27/02/2011 at 12:24

And some other sites have already linked to part 7.

Okay, so seven has to stay at seven.

In which case, I either favour publishing the other ones, and perhaps writing a note or another post saying - oops, hey look at these too.

Or the 4,5,6 on the photos, which is actually quite cute :)

  • Mr C27/02/2011 at 12:24

And some other sites have already linked to part 7.

    oh dear.

  • Christine27/02/2011 at 12:24

Assuming your blog platform allows the title and link to be altered separately, leave the link called that and simply re-title.

No, no, no, that is the absolute last resort.

  • Mr C27/02/2011 at 12:24

In which case, I either favour publishing the other ones, and perhaps writing a note or another post saying - oops, hey look at these too.

backdate the missing ones and pretend they were there all along.

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:24

Assuming your blog platform allows the title and link to be altered separately, leave the link called that and simply re-title.

But I don't think Christine will like it... Being part 5 but with a link that says part 7... It's like wearing odd shoes...

  • Christine27/02/2011 at 12:25

backdate the missing ones and pretend they were there all along.

    Yes. I won't tell anyone.

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2011 at 12:25

No, no, no, that is the absolute last resort.

    Why?

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:26

backdate the missing ones and pretend they were there all along.

    Yes. I won't tell anyone.

Can I wait the next two weeks to do that... Or do I have to make today especially cheerful?

  • Christine27/02/2011 at 12:28

Can I wait the next two weeks to do that... Or do I have to make today especially cheerful?

    Hehe, I'm okay with waiting.

  • Mr C27/02/2011 at 12:28

Can I wait the next two weeks to do that... Or do I have to make today especially cheerful?

    :) :) :)

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:29

    Hehe, I'm okay with waiting.

    Phew :)

I did think that I could really add to the time travel nature by making a new part 6 that was the story of this and saying a reason to be cheerful was finally having everything back in the right order.

  • Mr C27/02/2011 at 12:29

No, no, no, that is the absolute last resort.

    Why?

breaking links breaks the web. urls are absolute and should remain that way if at all possible.

  • Christine27/02/2011 at 12:30

breaking links breaks the web. urls are absolute and should remain that way if at all possible.

Yea, that's what Alia is saying. But I wouldn't be happy with a title of 5 and a url of 7.

  • Mr C27/02/2011 at 12:30

Yea, that's what Alia is saying. But I wouldn't be happy with a title of 5 and a url of 7.

oooh, no. don't do that either. what do you url for 7 then?

    7-2? yikes no.

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2011 at 12:31

breaking links breaks the web. urls are absolute and should remain that way if at all possible.

That's why I suggested changing the title without changing the URL (i.e. re-titling). Both of the blogging platforms I've used can do that.

  • Christine27/02/2011 at 12:31

    7-2? yikes no.

Exactly. It's not so bad if it's words that are different, but numbers is something else entirely.

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2011 at 12:31

oooh, no. don't do that either. what do you url for 7 then?

    "therealpart7" or something.

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:31

Yea, that's what Alia is saying. But I wouldn't be happy with a title of 5 and a url of 7.

And that's fair... Ontological representation in urls has been hard fought for for a reason. The url should represent what it's pointing at.

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:32

    "therealpart7" or something.

    IamPart74Real ;)

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2011 at 12:33

And that's fair... Ontological representation in urls has been hard fought for for a reason. The url should represent what it's pointing at.

And with URL shortening, the battle appears to have been lost. Apart from the root part of a website, it's still relatively rare for a link to match its contents.

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:34

And with URL shortening, the battle appears to have been lost. Apart from the root part of a website, it's still relatively rare for a link to match its contents.

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2011 at 12:34

A lot of the other websites I visit don't, and some blogging platforms (PHPbb, for example) still render ontological naming impossible. Even my current platform (Blogbaker) struggles to come up with a resemblance because it doesn't appear to be able to generate long URLs.

shame. even posterous mostly does a good job, but it runs out of characters eventually:

To put this into perspective, BlogBaker appears to have a limit of 18 characters, substituting spaces for hyphens and removing all other punctuation. So this page would be:

    http://www.sidepodcast.com/daily-27th-februar

which would be a problem because that would be overwritten by whatever was written this time next year unless you were clever.

we wrote our own content management system for f1 minute over christmas and super long urls were top of the list.

It's really important... In the CMS I wrote at work you can have multiple urls as well in case you make a mistake you don't have to destroy the old one. The page has an ultimate primary url but keeps the old one as a redirect.

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 12:47

Absolutely... Sounds great... Do I need to do anything extra? Or do you want to change the time or anything?

Apparently at the Carlton Club at the moment there is some renovation being done on some of the paintings. The paintings are so old they have been cut out of the frames to be fixed but the frames have been left.

So you have these ornate gold frames surrounding some brick work, Apparently on one of them some wag has stuck on the wall, "This work has been graciously provided on loan from the Tate Modern".

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2011 at 13:33

    Mr C...

On the Giggles Radio Test front... I want to test a number of techy bits which might be less well suited for FactByteFactBoxing part at first because I'll be wanting to stop and start the stream and change settings and things. This will be the first test of streaming from Wirecast and over Virgin. (Still to ustream though) and there is a chance to do a low bandwidth simultaneous stream as well for those who have buffering.

So how about I run the very techy test, probably with no music 5-5:30 and then at 5:30 we kick off with a mini show of 30 mins which will test that the stuff can keep running and doesn't get in the way?

But none of this gets in the way of FBFBing really but I didn't want Christine to get all disappointed at the first half of the testing if you see what I mean so I figured it would be best to be forewarned of the plan (such as it is ;) ).

  • Mr C27/02/2011 at 13:34

I didn't dare look too much at the comments from the previous post floating the idea of pay-only comments. I still get the feeling that the way Joe's going he's going to have no commenting permitted by the end of the year, or very restricted commenting.

The GP+ thing would perhaps have helped by meaning he'd only have to maintain one database to verify whether someone could use certain things.

Can't he just get someone to help admin with his comments though? It's a shame he has to put up with a widespread amount of nonsense but maybe having someone to help him when he has far better things to do may help...?

He mentioned it a few weeks ago but I must say I never saw the logic. I mean, I see the logic in using another brand to keep it distinct from Renault, but not that one because AFAIK it is only available in North America (maybe Japan). Also Nissan is into GT racing now.

And surely Renault want a title-winning engine.

    Hi people, I am watching.

  • Mr C27/02/2011 at 17:29

Is there a way to find out what's eating the processor on this machine?

Whoops! Wonder if Nico Hulkenburg is still owed his winnings from when he won the 2006-2007 A1GP season?

Sounds fun (and expensive) for him. But now it's time to focus on Sidepodmeetup in Boston, maybe in April. When he gets back we'll put together 2 or 3 dates as options so we can see who can go. Fun will be had by all!

    Greetings Everyone.

People at Sidepodcast Headquaters, on you trips to F1 factories, (I believe one was Renault, and the other was Williams) did you notice if they use hydrdric lifts to hoist up the F1 cars so that mechanics can work under the cars?

I just happened to come up with a crazy idea for a project for my spare mechanics for my aircraft model kits..... Now I just need to find the 30 year Airfix Zoo Animals kit and I think I can get started....

See, I told you guys "not non-plugging" Red Bull enough would get you somewhere..... :P

Hmmm, that actually makes my life a little bit easier..... There's one pose of a mechanic flat on his back with a wrench in his hand....that should now be every useful....

Yes! I have dug up my 1/24th scale diecast Damon Hill FW16 Williams Renault. Not to be mean or anything, but I am very happy to see how boxy this car is. Does not look too differcult to use as a base to reduce down to 1/72 scale to match up the mechanics with.

I hate to think that the biggest problem of this excercise is going to find a 1/72 scale Panda....

Well I am only going to use it as the base for two idential model cars in a team's factory. But if you really want to help me out, bug Lou for me. I think she has a few photos that I need to figure out the team's colours once I get to painting stage....

I have a feeling she may be a bit busy with the nastiness that are university assignments right now :( poor her.

Not instantly. I have only just calculated that I need a top back wing of 14 mm length by 4.667 mm wide, and that's it.

  • Jordan F127/02/2011 at 20:15

...Now to make a tracing of the outline of the actual car, then to enlarge by 33% and I will get an outline of the bottom of car in 72nd scale. Then I can get height of the car around the sidepods and then I can work out the height of the airbox from the overall height and the rear wing assembly is simple enough....

Kyle Busch just sideways-rammed Edwards such that he crashed into the wall, gone to the garage for repairs.

Blogger question that is driving me batty: I cropped a pic in iPhoto. I go to insert the image, I select the cropped version, and it inserts the original sized image. ack! What am I doing wrong?

Well. it being NASCAR, now would be a good time to plug Ragan's Trackside Hot-Dog Stand. Freshly Charred Hot-Dogs, just the way you like it!

The race didn't really grab my attention apart from that last little segment, so I've managed to put together my game scores already. You'll have to wait until the blog post Monday or Tuesday to see the results though. ;)
